@Corpuschain - Welcome to the thread thanks heaps for the comments, whats your favorite model so far?

@Gits - Cheers man, I'm happy with him as well

@Azazelx - Thank you

Update: first up the complete Tau army shots

And the full 11th push army shots - I think as an army the singular bronze/tin weapons blend in well enough its not that noticeable.

This is why I can't do army commissions. Aside from the fact that my painting is not commission worthy, I don't think I could part with models that I put that much effort into and made to look so good!

@Graven - Always like a lurker who pops up now and again, lets me know your still there

@Mad - Quite a bit to get to, perhaps our next game might have you pitted against these guys.

@Cam - Yeah my mate was stoked, we spent about an hour and a half just going over all the models etc, the added bonus is this army is set to live at my place for now as he doesn't have room or a gaming table and really only would play at my place!

@Zerg - I dunno, there are some really awesome schemes coming out of your blog, I totally get what you mean though, I spent 4 months doing this army and it really feels like mine at this moment.

@Gits - Thanks Gits, always great to get positive feedback.

Update: So a bit of a statistical round up for this army, I started on 2nd Jan and finished on the 30th April, I painted 201 models in this time which works out to be 1.69 models per day, every day over that time which isn't bad for about an hour a day of painting, and that I also did two Lord of Wars and one of those had a tonne of detail. If I compare that to the Necron Army which I did this time last year, I did 152 models from the 5th Feb to 9th May which worked out to be 1.65 models per day, every day still doing an hour a day, so statistically I am a little quicker but it doesn't feel like I was.

Here's a Necron vs Tau game on the weekend, no full batrep sorry, I think I lost this one as it was objectives and I pulled terribly on the maelstrom cards.

Update: Whats next I hear you cry!

Gray Nights, ones I made up over a year ago and have been sitting in a box awaiting some love.

On the list we have
1 x Sammael on Jetbike conversion to Chapter master on a bike)
1 x Contemtor Dreadnaught
5 x Hammernaters
6 x Centurions (ranged) 3 converted to GK Cents
1 x Melta biker
1 x Telion conversion
1 x Tigerus
1 x Librarian with Jump Pack
1 x Chaplain with Jump Pack
5 x Terminators with Assault cannon (conversions from DV)

I am also doing a small job for MarsNZ here on the forums by edge highlighting all his tanks as a way to say thanks for trusting me with his models while he is away from NZ
5 x Leman Russ Battle Tanks (need to magnetise a bunch of items for this)
4 x Chimeras
1 x Rocket Chimera (not sure of the name - Manticore?)
1 x BaneBlade (need to magnetise the guns)

You and me both Gits, there are models in this push I have been waiting a long time to paint and plan on doing as much as I can on them, expect squiggles.

Update: Here is a close up of the units in this push, I am really looking forward to painting the Chapter Master on THE bike, the Contemptor and the Hammernators

5 terminators with conversions from the DV set I managed to pick up from a bring and buy

Hammernators with resin cast hammer heads, built from Dark angel terminators

Slightly converted librarian from the DV set

Stock melta biker (made before grav had come out, stay tuned there!)

Sgt Telion Conversion

Reclaimed Chaplain from a bring and buy - added plasma pistol and interceptor backpack as thats what my jump packs all are

Chapter master on a bike - Sammael conversion with thunder hammer and sheild eternal

Contemptor from a bring and buy, interesting tidbit here, the tau was added well before I had thoughts of painting a tau army and was going to be painted up as LDP's tau scheme but will be in the black/neon scheme now

Stock Centurions from a bring and buy

GK centurions (counts as normal cents) also from the same bring and buy

Old school Tigerius metal cast from ebay

Cheers Gits, there was more I wanted to add, but it ended up leaving the whole thing very top heavy and all out of proportion.

Update: After looking back at the tau I really liked having all the basing done right off the bat, so here is the result of glue, sand, glue, dry, prime

Thanks for the well wishes guys, makes me all warm in side

Update: Over the past week I've been magnetising some Leman Russ tanks for MarsNZ as he is overseas and even if he was in NZ he hates painting tanks I realised I work in an office when I got blisters from using the pin vice...

6mm holes in the sides of the tanks and 3mm holes for the sponsons.

6mm for the turret weapons

2mm Holes in ALL the push in sponson weapons (I think this is where I ended up with the blisters)

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/05/09 20:49:42

Post by: Solar_lion

It seems like a long chore to magnetize but the results really open up your options. That's a lot of SS.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/05/10 03:39:41

Post by: ZergSmasher

I feel your pain about the blisters. My wrists got tired after drilling magnet holes in a bunch of Crisis suit arms and weapons. As Solar_lion said above, it really is worth it because you don't have to get new models to use different options.

Also, let me wish you a happy (belated) birthday!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/05/10 06:04:49

Yeah I both love and hate magnetising. It's definitely worth it in the long run though.

@Solar - Thanks man, It really was a chore, then making sure I put the magnets in the right way was very nerve wracking

@Zerg - Cheers, yeah having so many options for my mates tanks made him a very happy camper indeed!

@EDC - Thats the thing, I hold off doing it because I worry I'll get the wrong polarity and that would be it, can't undo that (with super glue) where as when I'm actually doing it just gotta make sure I check polarity before applying glue which is easy

Update: On to the priming!

After the priming was done I put my airbrush to good use and base coated all the tanks

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/05/11 20:26:00

Post by: Knightley

Update: What typically happens in my pushes is I start out doing all the smaller stuff first and end on doing the larger models at the end, by this time I'm usually tired and just want to get through it, then I end up rushing the model. However this time I want to do the larger models first, lucky for me that means the Contemptor is up first

I spent an hour edge lining everything with a nuln oil wash, long time readers will notice this is a departure from how I used to paint where I would base coat the model in a Dark Grey, then fully wash the entire model with nuln oil then layer up each armour piece to medium grey then highlight. After watching plenty of Duncan Rhodes how to paint videos I realised I was wasting a lot of time doing this and just edge shadowing gets the same results.

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Thanks

@Solar - Oh yes, but its worth it

Update: Started working on the edge highlights on the dread, I have a new brush to use for highlighting and so far I am very very happy with it, I can produce some very thing and consistent lines. The higlighting isn't complete only because I ran out of time and I was making sure I got everything looking right.

Contemptor looks good so far! I especially love the Tau Crisis suit he's crushing underfoot. Maybe its because you're tired of Tau so you want them dead? Lol JK, I know you enjoyed painting the Tau! I assume the Contemptor's gonna have some squiggles on it?

@hk1x1 - Thanks, a quick black wash followed by the highlight colour really made it easy

@MK - No worries mate, you're here now and again and you lurk it works for me!

@Zerg - Cheers, Yeah I was going to paint the battlesuit up in LDP's Tau's colour scheme when I made him last year, however with the recent completion of the Tron-Tau I had to paint it as them, it just wouldn't be right. Oh and of course it'll have squiggles

@Azazelx - If your serious about getting me to assemble and magnetise I'd be happy to help out, I do like building models

@Mad - You and me both man, I might have this guy completed for our next game!

@EDC - Thank you man, appreciate it.

Update: Finished of the edge highlighting and started blocking in some colours and washing (doing everything different than I normally would) regretfully I didn't to much done as the family was sick this weekend.

@NF - Cheers Damo, I like the Crisp and Grey on this guy, I am really the most happy with the edge highlighting so far.

@Januine - Thanks man, it is a very commanding pose isn't it

@EDC - Oh yes, there will be plenty of little squiggles on this guy, he is an ancient weapon of war after all!

@Mad - Yep a storm bolter in one fist and a plasma gun in the other, combined with the missile launcher on the top to boot. You could always to a scenic base with a contemptor and another flyrant.... just saying

@Graven - Thank you, getting close to completion, I'm not sure its any quicker than I normally paint though.

@Nevelon - Welcome to the blog! Rules wise this will be part of my Space Marine force painted up as a Grey Knight, it's all about that bling eh?

@Wolvey - Thanks, when I was building I hadn't settled on the top mounted cyclone launcher so there is another tilt shield on his left arm, but its kind of covered up now, bit of a bugger but at least I know its there

Update: Reds and the Tau on the base are done, I might need to do more red on the cyclone pack, but not sold on it yet

@Gits - I am reallly happy with how he is coming out, I was very daunted by all the flat panels and having flash backs of painting tanks by hand (no airbrush work) I was worried i wouldn't be able to get a nice smooth look.

@Graven - Cheers man!

@Wolvey - Thanks, looking back through a "how to paint" guide I own, I did mess up by not having the holy triangle on the model, so while it looks good it doesn't have a focus point.

@Januine - Great to see a fantastic painter as your self agrees with my intermittent thoughts on how to paint my models, I always like getting feed back, it helps make me a better painter I feel (Drilling barrels, mould lining and thinning paints comes to mind)

@EDC - He's not done yet!

@Cleatus - Thank you!

Well, if you're ever in Melbourne and are up for some assembly, I've got tons of stuff unbuilt - plastics, FW, it goes on and on. I've also got the tools, I just lack the patience/skill/confidence/all of the above to get them done for some reason. I'll even feed you!

That Contemptor has come up amazingly well. Crisp and Grey indeed. The spot colour red works perfectly, as does the blue of the claws. Yeah, the paint there looks really really nice.

@Wolvey - Thanks, appreciate the love for the squiggles

@Gits - You and me both buddy, I really missed painting marines.

@Zerg - Oh wow, that is some high praise indeed, I would have said that one of the Chaos lords or even the Fulgrim commission I did would have been my best work.

@hk1x1 - Thank you

Update: A small change of pace, going to try get through the edge highlighting on these AM tanks for MarsNZ, who knows perhaps I'll get bored later this year and want to fully finish the tanks? So finished the sponsons, and the magnetised weapon options for Pask and his offsider and almost finished the turret and a half of a chimera. Also to note, I hate edge highlighting Chimeras!

The sling arm is nothing special it comes on the sprue for the infantry command squad. I figured he's been armwrestling with the regimental bullgryns again.

I've heard that the tracks on a Leman Russ are really a pain to assemble on the model compared to a Space Marine Rhino. Is that true?

The guard vehicles are very easy to assemble, the only tracks that caused me any problems were the Baneblade and that's likely due to my own error.

@Gits - Melta, lots of melta and all tanks start to quake in their boots.

@Cam - Thanks man!

@Zerg - Agreed, seems the meta is all about fast moving units for maelstrom games eh?

Update: battle report time, after reading what Mad had written on our last battle report I thought I might throw my hand at it as well. Its taken from the point of view of the sgt for my large blob of sisters used in the battle and everything I think she would see.

Battle of Outpost 82-720

Sister Superior Alberta scanned her Auspex a second time.

"This can't be right..." she trailed off. For the second time in the last 5 cycles there was a faint contact which had then vanished.

She'd heard there was something big happening, but as far as details go there was very little filtered down to her level, that damn Inquisitor and his misinformation. That combined with a malaise which had settled over the outpost, had the civilian populace in the area fleeing to the underground bunkers in fear.

Looking out at the outpost force she was with her Battle squad of nineteen sisters they had the honor of being equipped with two holy flamers in the squad, they were accompanied by their newest priest 'Fazier' a strong willed young man and a dab handy arm with his power axe, they were also backed up with a mighty Immolator. Part of her current training meant that the high Canoness Trineth was watching over her command of the squad, if felt good to have such an esteemed member of the order nearby in case anything went wrong.

Back near the bunkers was their firepower in the shape of two mighty Exorcists. She was aware there were two other Sister superiors, however they were junior to her and as such only had 4 other sisters under their command. Out scouting their flanks were two elite Dominion squads with the forces melta weapons, scouting in recent times had become quite dangerous and immolators were sent out as transports with the Dominions.
The trump card was an Imperial Avenger Strike Fighter at an airbase a few Kilometres away, ready to support them if required.

Looking out towards the old abandoned bastion there was a thick green fog that had rolled in, Alberta had heard tales of outposts going dark after a preceding fog having been spotted, but this information was haphazard at best due to the informant usually rambling about unseen horrors at the same time. The High canoness had seen the fog as well and ordered Sister Superior Belleas to advance to the bunker in front of them, there was a cogitator at the bunker which allowed for telemetry data to be streamed to their power armour allowing them to hit fast moving flying targets, there was a similar cogitator inside bunker 720.

Suspecting there was going to be something bad happening very soon, Alberta directed her squad to start heading to the ruins of a building, the ruins might offer a better vantage point of the battlefield. It was a fair hike so she ordered the squad to double time to get closer. At bunker 720 she heard the Exorcists unleash their first Salvo of firepower, the rockets streaked overhead and she heard unearthly screeching and the muffled explosions from the rockets. The Enemy had arrived!

Suddenly there was a horrifying howl and something large flew out of the fog, Alberta had never seen something so horrific, it was huge, it had large bat wings, a drooling toothed maw and what looked like two sets of arms holding what organic weapons, it took aim at Belleas’ squad and unleashed a raft of firepower felling two of the sisters squad, more sisters were hit but their holy armour protected them. She turned to face the ruins and out of the green fog there were small sized creatures with wings jumping around the ruins, she spotted one slip and fall to the ground and heard the creatures’ neck snap, forced with two threats she momentarily froze.

Again she heard the Exorcists fire another volley, this time in the distance there were deeper sounding screams, it seems the mighty tanks had found their range. Her ears picked up the high pitched whine heralding the arrival of the Strike fighter, this brought her focus back to the battle,

The Canoness pointed at the Flying monstrosity and ordered the squad to bring it down. The sheer amount of shots poured into the beast was impressive, the Immolator, Exorcist, Strike fighter and both sister squads put everything they had into it, the beast evaded with an agility she did not expect from a creature so large, she saw the large amount of damage on it, but the beast would not go down.

The beast turned tail and flew out over the ruins at great speed. The sisters cheered, they had beaten back the attackers! Belleas’ squad were cheering right up till the moment that their heads exploded, Alberta had not heard any shooting and she realised it had been a feint, there was a larger force coming and they had been drawn in to a trap.
There was a large clap of thunder from the sky, Alberta raised her eyes skywards and saw a flaming meteor come streaking down from the heavens aimed directly at bunker 720, it narrowly missed the bunker and impacted the earth creating a burning crater, had these beasts managed to control meteors and drop them, it didn’t seem possible yet there it was. She had to blink her eyes twice, something was moving in the crater. A huge creature from nightmares of old emerged and stomped towards their Exorcist bringing its hideous weaponry to bear on the rear armour of the tank. She didn’t think it possible that any Xenos creature could take out one of the mighty imperial tanks but when the smoke started to billow out of the tank she knew they were in trouble. Behind the horrible creature something else was happening, a large sac looking thing was starting to float out from the crater and it was heading their way.

“Time to move! Get to the bunker NOW!” She yelled at her squad, as the unit looked to bunker 720 they felt the ground shake and an even bigger creature emerged from the ground right in front of the entrance. There was an audible gasp from a number of the squad members, Alberta could sense the squad was close to breaking, intent on not letting Canoness Trineth down she looked at the young priest and told him to start a prayer, they were going to save the civilians in that bunker and they would need to take down that monster to do it.

“Prepare for combat sisters! For the Emperor and for the Rose! CHARGE!” Pulling her pistol out she fired at the huge monster and charged in. The creature swung its claws and crushed two of her squad, in retaliation the fury of her squad’s attacks was immense, the monster started bleeding from many cuts and holes, they had done some serious damage but it still stood.

Taking stock of the fight Alberta had realised they had made another error, the small flapping creatures had been left to their own devices and had now cleared the ruins and were quickly hopping towards her squad. “Redouble your efforts Sisters bring this creature down!”
The holy priest began chanting one of his war hymns and the effect on the squad was uplifting, while the squad continued to beat on the huge creature the priest moved over to the newly arrived brood and laid waste to four of them with his axe.

The huge creature let out a strangle gurgle as Canoness Trineth jammed her Chainsword into its neck, the creature faltered then fell into the hole it had created and ceased moving. Alberta didn’t have a chance to cheer as the flapping rats were spitting a purple goo at the sister’s eyes, she readied her Chainsword for their next attack.

She needn’t have worried the war hymn from their priest had whipped the sisters into a wild frenzy and they tore the winged gargoyles to pieces, now they weren’t in combat and there was a sudden volley of inaccurate fire from the floating sac, the sheer amount of shots it put out tore down a number of her squad.

“We cannot allow this thing to pollute our planet sisters, ready your blades!”
Her squad had been bloodied in combat with many of the Xenos creatures and this one would be no easy target, they all charged in and with the priests rousing words they battered the floating sac and tore it to pieces.
“Well done Sisters, you have proven our worth to our Lord and savior this day! Let us get to the Civilians and see if they are all right”

Alberta looked to the bunker entrance and her heart dropped, right at the door was the hulking creature that had destroyed their tanks and it was heading in the main hanger door.

@Azazelx - Cheers, he really needed to match the rest of the army, I did end up buying 25 of the warp packs from an overseas bitz site as I didn't want to shell out $400 for the GK kits to get them.

@Graven - Thanks man, I don't know if you notice this, however this libby doesn't have any squiggles on his armour, its all on the cloak. The more you know

@Wolvey - Thank you!

@Gits - I did try something a little different on the cloak, nothing to major just a new way to shade it, will be trying it on a cloak very soon.

@JatW - Thank you, I have a loyal fanbase who only come here to see squiggles so I intend on doing it more

@Zerg - There are ones which are hard, I use a Micron Pen to do the black ones, quick tip you NEED to let the black try for a while as it smudges very easily if you don't (I've made that mistake to many times) For the bone ones I use a 000 brush and while drawing the line make very small movements up and down, take the brush off and put it down with a gap. It just takes practise.

@EDC - Hahah you and me both mate!

@AoV - Cheers I'm glad you like it.

Painting one or two bikes isn’t that bad, but doing them in larger numbers gets old really quick. Those kits are just sooooo dated, with soft details and questionable lines. Plus the giant seam down the middle.

Haha don't I know it, I wanted this guy to have a bare head, because you know, chapter master!

Update: more colours blocked in and some of them are washed

Did you have trouble assembling that model at all? I really had to fight with getting that eagle on the front to fit right. I actually ended up cutting the tail off and gluing it on as a separate piece. It's hard to tell now that it's on there.

Yeah it was a bit of a nightmare, having to use hot water to get some of the things to fit, I did make the model up over a year ago so some of my memories of the assembly are a bit lacking

Update: Finished up all the blocking in and washes

@Solar - Thanks!

@Gits - Anything to break up the sea of grey eh?

@Wolvey - Cheers man, I really like the look of this model, the book really tops the whole thing off as well

@Graven - I was tempted to do a red bookmark but thought it might blend into the back ground to much

@Stonned - The rider? But yes there will be squiggles

@Solar - Big chopper style bars that go higher than the rider?

@Januine - I'm slightly worried I wont be able to fill the pages with something meaningful, oh well I'll just do a ton of squiggles and see what happens!

@Justaerin - Thanks, its my counts as "The Shield Eternal" from the Marine relic list, I was going to just put on a standard stormsheild but needed something special

Update: Started a different way on doing cloaks, mixed a darker colour to paint into the recesses instead of a shade, will see what happens

Post by: Knightley

@Wolvey - I had thought about doing green lights, then yellow but settled on blue as I already had the base/layer/highlight sorted due to the power/force weapons.

@Gits - Thank you!

@Solar - Cheers

@Zerg - Haha yes, that arrangement isn't really the best, lucky for me the sponsons are magnetised so all I need to do is "acquire" a lascannon set and get them painted up

Update: Before jumping on some terminators I figured I'd do some heads

@Graven - I think I've been subtly drawning everyone in, remember I had the DA shoulder pads attached to marines in 2011 so since then you've been slowly seeing more and more DA stuff appearing on them, soon I'll just down and out use Azreal as my CM

@Zerg - Not really I seem to have gotten a sweet groove with faces in the last year or so and can almost do them in my sleep.

@EDC - Cheers, I ended up chopping off the other assault cannon and attaching another variation to make it even more custom.

@d00m - Thanks and welcome aboard!

Forgot about that... yes, definitely yes. Just have to get my butt in gear. New termie looks awesome. I think your painting is getting more dynamic as you go. That's a very good thing in my book.

Fantastic job Knightley... you should be proud of that. Wish you had access to a good graphics program... they're really good looking when corrected for brightness and white balance.

If you're looking for a free and very easy to use photo app - try out Photoscape Knightley. Dead easy to use and really handy for touching up photos quickly. I've been using it for years and well happy.
The termies are looking well sharp. Great job

@Gits - I do have access to GIMP, however no understanding on how to use it, I've had a look online but perhaps my old age has stopped me from learning anything new

@Mad - Cheers man!

@Januine - Cool, will see what I can do with that, I'll have a look at it when I get a moment, thanks for the help

Lookin' good knightley! The camo cloak looks great, and I have to ask what colors and techniques you used.
Ready for that wash,

@Justaerin - Thanks man, Base was Dark Angels Green, Next was goblin green in little jelly bean shaped blobs, after that was Calathan Brown in blobs as well, some covering the lighter green, Next was a Yellow base (can't recall the name, its the darkest of the base yellows) done in thin lines, then last is black done in similar ways.

Update: After taking the advice of Januine on the photo editing software, I produced this

Urgh, seeing it in the light of day shows I really need to clean my desk of dust... his cloak is covered!

Love that Telion!

Cloak looks particularly awesome.

PS: It's not dust, it's the cloak trying to alter its camo pattern to better hide the wearer in the current environment

Nice job on the temies,

I think the cloak should have a bit more Lt. green in it. It would better match the basing.

That photo is *much* better. Nice to see your models in living color rather than something that's tint-dominated.

@Mad - Hahha love it, all my models on the painting desk are trying to camo up

@EDC - Thanks man

@Solar - Cheers, I agree I had thought about doing it to match the base, but I had already done another 5 camo scouts a couple of years ago and needed to match them

@Gits - Heh, thanks for the good will, the photo editor is simple as to use as well, almost want to go back and re-edit all my previous photos.... almost.

Update: sorry for the lack of updates, was sick yesterday and posting a pic fell off my radar, so today you get two! the one from yesterday and todays.
Yesterday

Today

These guys have SO much detail its ridiculous almost OTT amounts imo.

Ooohh, Centurions! I don't see the play value in them, so i've never painted them myself. Yours are lookin' snazzy, though. Just the basecoats, I assume?

@Justaerin - Yep, just base layer colours, they should brighten right up after layer highlight, Interestingly enough I've had a lot of fun with 3 Grav cents, the dish out a decent amount of AP2 shooting and with the grav amp they really can pile on the pain.

@Januine - Yeah the sculpts are what really put me off for the longest time (this is coming from someone who impulse buys pretty much everything as you can tell from my 'To Paint' list) however after proxying some in a Bat rep I was very happy with how they preformed.

@Gits - Cheers

@Wolvey - Thanks, they do have the odd small panel that you can add your own flair, but I find they are just to full of details for my personal tastes.

Update: Finished up the base colours and on to the washes

@Justaerin - Slow and glacial, full steam ahead I guess

@Gits - Thanks man, need the encouragement right about now!

@Graven - No doubt, I figured if I started another universe it would definitely be something small (akin to the Batman universe) I'm not there just yet, to much a fan of 40k still

@Wolvey - Here's a question, how long on average did it take per centurion to complete? I estimate about three or so hours for each one of these guys, as opposed to about 1.5 hours for a marine.

@AoV - Thank you!

Update: getting started on edge highlighting the grey

Hate my memory, thought I posted on the finished Centurions. I really like what you did with the Grav effects, very similar to how I do mine as well. They are by far some of my favorite models, they came out amazing and I'm sure well worth the time and effort you put in them.

Excited to see the hammernators finished, love the use of the Dark Angel shields, adds that special touch!

@Justaerin - Hah yes! Thunder hammers, for when you really need to get your point across. Colour wise probabbly light blue on the edges and might try some lightening on the flat panels.

@Wolvey - Thanks! I do try to incorporate a number of other chapters icons in my force, primarily DA and secondary Black Templars.
