Everytime a googleAd gets loaded on my iPhone/iPad it redirects me to a white page with just the ad.

8 times so far today, 4 times trying to load the same thread.

I assume you guys are using iOS?

If so, it is a Safari issue that happens sometimes when loading a URL that has a # sign in it (which occurs when you click on 'read the most current post' link, for example).

Previously, this was only occurring on standard Safari, but now it seems to have graduated to the mobile Safari as well.

Last I checked with Lego, he said it was an issue with Safari that he could not fix, but I don't know if anything has changed since then.

For the record, although I'm getting an issue on an ipad, I'm using Chrome as my browser.

It only started happening yesterday, after experiencing a few hours where I was unable to open the site due to a DNS lookup error.

Don't know if they're related, but it does seem like a coincidence if they're not.

It doesn't always happen on my iPad, and is happening significantly more often today than it has in the past. I rarely surf Dakka on anything but my iPad anymore.

It doesn't always happen with google ads (for example, there's a google ad at the top of the page now) but when it does happen, it's a google ad.

And I've had it happen when normally clicking a thread, not just when I click "view first unread".

Yeah, this started happening me the other day too. It's SUPER annoying because you lose the "new post" link and I have to find it manually.

And yes, Safari on my iPhone.

Also, just to note, "View First unread" links don't have a #.

So it has nothing to do with a #.

So why the difference between that link and the one with "skipread" that I posted earlier?
When/how does the forum decide which URL to use?

I don't know how you obtained that previous URL, but the way it works is this:

Anytime you are jumping to a specific post within a thread, then it generates a # symbol and then a number after that, with that last number being the specific post number (which tells the browser where to 'jump' to within the page).

So if you click on the little 'page' icon on the top left of any individual post the URL then changes to represent a page load going to that particular post...so if you ever want to generate a URL pointing to a specific post in a thread, that's what that little 'page' icon on the top left of every post is for.

When you're clicking on the 'skip to the new post' link, it should always be generating that # sign because it is always jumping to a specific post.

Google Ads on Mobile. @ 2013/04/03 01:22:27

Post by: Cyporiean

The Skipread URL is used when clicking on 'First Unread'.

Which is generally how I end up getting the issue on my iPhone/iPad.

Google Ads on Mobile. @ 2013/04/03 04:57:07

Post by: rigeld2

The skipread and the hash URL are both generated from "view first unread".

I'm just trying to figure out why it's sometimes one and sometimes the other.

Again, the hashtag URL with a number after it represents a specific post within a page...anytime you are viewing the first unread you should be seeing a hashtag URL (as it is jumping to a specific post).

Again, I've gotten the skipread URL from a view first unread link.
I understand how the hashtag works. I understand you're telling me how you understand it to work.
It does not only give hash links.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/skipread/493399.page
From the view first unread link under subscribed posts. The same way I get hashtag links.

Okay, this is weird.

The main annoyance I have is that hitting back goes back to where I was before loading the thread and the "view first unread" is gone.

Just playing around I figured out that if you click "view first" and "bounce" the page (just drag up and down) while its loading and the page has a google ad, the google ad will take over but hitting back will take you to the new post in the thread with no ad loaded at the top.

1st of all Chrome on iOS is not actually Chrome. It's nothing more then a front end app that uses Safari as its core. Think of it more like a skinned app... You're seeing Chrome, but in actuality you're still using Safari. Sorry, needed to get that out of the way, it irks me.

Anyway, this issue is happening to me as well. Somewhat glad to see I'm not the only one.

Initial testing I have done seems to indicate that it does work but turning ads off seems to have affected other things for some reason - I seem to be unable to jump to the last post properly and the formatting on the reply screen is buggered up. Not sure i this is simply due to having the ads turned off or some other bug but I never noticed it before.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Addendum: it seems only certain threads display the strange behaviour after turning ads off. This thread, for example, when pressing the jump to last post button, for some reason goes to Yakfaces's post at the top of page 2. Likewise, when posting a reply, the window is all messed up and strangely formatted - I had to manually zoom right in to see the reply box properly. However, other threads are fine - I tested a few in OT just to see and they behaved as expected.

Since people have asked about android: I've never had this happen running android. Also: what google ads? I thought those only showed up when one wasn't logged in? The only ad I see is the banner at the top next to the title logo (unless that's what you're talking about; I think "adwords" when I hear "google ads").

There are some obnoxious behaviors when loading a tab with a # in the URL, but only if you're not looking at it when it jumps down to the tag (opening a first unread tab then going and reading an already loaded thread in the meantime), but those still load the page in question, and I'm chalking it up to smartphone browsers just being generally horrible at everything.

Hi Lego, just to note that the Google Ad redirection issue has started happening again when browsing Dakka on my iPad (using worksafe theme not mobile). Yeah this is happening to me every time I post in a topic. I get redirected to an ad.

Using the standard (Dakka 2012 orange) theme on iPad.

I'm happy to get ads in banners and stuff, it's what keeps sites like this afloat, and a lot of the ads on Dakka are quite handy and wargaming related anyway. But these Google redirect ads are the usual targeted ads that misinterpret what wargaming is and try to get me to play gakky mobile games with war in the title, that get annoying. (I assume it's unintentional anyway)

I get it both from clicking on a 'first unread' link and when posting using the 'quick reply' box. In either case, if the new page has an Adsense ad on it, you get redirected. General browsing doesn't seem to trigger it, neither have I had it happen with standard (non-quick reply) posting.

Google Ads on Mobile. @ 2016/06/12 08:51:13

I have the same as above, but it also triggers when posting normally.
In which case pressing "back" goes back to the post writing screen, and can mean it resubmits if I'm not quick on the ball.

This is happening to me too. I'm using an iPhone and it only seems to happen when using 'first unread', although I've also had odd behaviour when using the quick reply, where as I start to type the keyboard disappears. Not sure if that's because the focus is being moved to something else (e.g. an ad) or if it's unrelated. But they both started happening at the same time.
