So, this is where I've got to so far, I'm painting it section by section, so most the way through the left led so far. As its my first commision I'm only charging £1 since I have to start somewhere :p

Second leg mostly done, blue added to the foot of the other leg too since I though the black needed breaking up a bit. I also neatened up the grey Drybrush by going back over with a layer in black apart from not he edges.

Ok, so I think I'll charge £10 for this painting then, contrary to my previous post, the client likes it so far even more than he's hoped!
He's also asked me to do ten fire warrior. At this standard of painting how much do you think Would be reasonable to charge?
Oh, and here's where I'm up to:

I think the average rule of thumb is that whatever the model costs, you double that, plus add a bit extra.
I was quoted about £250 for Mephiston, painted to a high standard, and 10 assault marines. The lowest quote I've had, from an extremely good indy painter I know was £190, so yeh, £10 for a Riptide is ridiculously cheap aha

You can't get anything with a dollar unfortunately :p , this is only so cheap since its for my friend and my first commission. But if you'd like a more sensible commission, PM me

First off, I must say I love the choice of colours. Fantastic painting for your first commission. I have always had a soft spot for the 'little blue buggers (aka Tau)' but I honestly can't stand GW anymore and don't want to give them any of my money. But I still do like looking at their models and stuff, and the riptide is a rather nice model.
The only small thing I would suggest to you is that if you are planning on doing commission work for other people is to take a little more time on assembly, I noticed that one the shoulder joints it doesn't line up properly and there are some small mold lines and nubs from where it was clipped from the sprue . On the head there is a pin mark (that round circle, I believe that is a pin mark where the sprue is pushed out of the mold after casting.). I haven't used GW's liquid GS but some quick pudding would fix that up in no time and make it look all the better. Just remember paint does not hid mistakes it exposes flaws ( I learned that one the hard way also ).
Filling in the gaps and stuff will go a LONG way in showing potential customers that you are serious about your work and will ensure they will be getting a top notch product. The better your reputation the 'moar hard cash' you can make. I can't wait to see this badboy finished....hummm might be time to start looking for second hand Tau stuff....

Yeah you're probably right that I should use liquid green stuff in future.

I should definitely clear up the money thing cause everyone a saying it!!
I painted a few things for friends before for free (it was just models to paint that i didnt have to buy ) but I came to the idea that if you're good at something never do it for free, so I started changing some money but only a very small amount on this occasion just so that once I do a proper external commission I have at least one commission under my belt to show.

I recommend orangeing up the eyes. the head of the riptide is small so that it doesn't get shot

Well it's been a while since I've updated this, it's been for a mix of more gaming, not remembering to photograph models at time of completion and also since most of hat I've painted recently has gone into an army painting competition so it's been in store for a week; also ive been painting hobbit stuff that i thought i wouldn't include here with all the 40k - it's in my alert though still if anyone wants to see a few of those speed paints of mine. Just as an update here's my work on a Herald of Nurgle for my army, that dodgy horn was just a test, I have already completed the model but won't be able to get pics up for about a week, also next week I shall upload pics of my Firewarriors squad plus an eldar farseer converted to a tau ethereal. Here's the start on the Nurgle lord / herald.
Anyone interested in buying the Nurgle Lord once finished (don't worry it's neater than now on the armour than in the WIP pic), PM me then ill send some completed pics and details etc. and we can come to a price that will be very reasonable.
Also, want anything painted - particularly Nurgle being my forte (but can still do any other minis) - PM me and we can discuss if you're interested.

Post by: Largeblastmarker
It does, though I can see it being confused for bone.
57973
Post by: olim
If it were bone, I wouldn't mind - but I was aiming for gold - I managed to get a little more contrast on the gold since that last pic, made it look more metallic I hope. Whilst I was darkening I went a darkened other areas like around the intestines, which I think the model needed.
Also done a start on the armour, I hope I can have that almost done at least by the end of the day.
I think I'll enter this in UK golden daemon at the end of the month, hope it manages to get a finalist pin :p

Hi Bebop, your stuff is great too, in your gallery I'd seen a lot of it before not realising it was yours. I could learn a few things from your painting style I reckon
57973
Post by: olim
It might not look that different but a lot of work has gone into it so far with glazing and highlighting the main cloak. One but I really don't like is on the arm, I wouldn't be so critical if it wasn't that this is going to be a competition entry. Maybe I need to glaze over the whole area, or darken the edges of the shadow, I just really don't want to mess up what I've done so far.
2
5182
Post by: SlaveToDorkness
I think you need less shading since the wrinkles on the arm are not nearly as deep as below the waist. There shouldn't be a line of that darkest gray.

After reading a list about brittle finecast snapping and thinking I'm glad that never happened to me, moments later Gandalf's staff painted to look like wood broke off and became unfindable on the wooden floor. So it's a shame but bellow is as far as the model got until I find a replacement staff.
Alas, I've moved onto this conversion (he does have a face now) and I've started painting the plaguetoad.
Hoping to get this mostly done before my next Commision which will be my first go at warmachine models.

SlaveToDorkness wrote:A professional pain job on an unfortunately sculpted model. Hard to believe that's a mass produced product.
I love the model...
It was a hard choice between these guys and the Trench Coat ones they have done for my other army.
Whats wrong with it?
5182
Post by: SlaveToDorkness
The proportions are terrible.
That gun looks nothing at all like a functioning weapon.
The helmet is the size of a bare head.
The armored torso is the same size as the clothed lower body.
Two straps on the left arm armor with no strap on the right.
Tubular arms.
Cuff on one arm ,not on the other.
Hoses going to nothing.
Mainly the gun and the cloth. The gun literally looks like some scraps of plasticard glued together.
With a week or so to practice I feel like I could do better. It'd be all well and good if it were someone's own sculpt, but to be selling it as a professionally produced model....ugh.
79243
Post by: Swastakowey
I agree on the gun for sure!
Proportions are truescale. I have the trench guys on me, they look more like humans than heroic does. If these guys are anything like the the one painted then it looks great in my opinion.
The robes flare, looks ok to me.
Not sure on the head, does look a bit small.
Straps annoy me now
I think its the cloth that makes them look pudgy in the arms. The straps actually dig into the puff which I thought made the puffyness look like they are just dressed warmly.
The cuff is also annoying me now.
Do the hoses simply end on the back of it? If so then yes.
Overall, I see what you mean now. But I think its ok personally. Just no longer as good as i thought.
Amazing paint job really helps though!
57973
Post by: olim
The hoses lead to a tank thing at the back, IMHO it's a good feature on the model.
The gun does look oddly sculpted, although, fortunately that's just a handgun that one guy holds, the other 9 troopers hold pretty decent looking guns.
In fact it's the same case with the straps, on the other 9 models they're symmetrical, I think the model I did was just meant to be a squad leader so he's a bit different not necessarily in a great way, but amongst the ten man squad, I don't think it would look to be too much of an issue.
The head size is a bit small compared to other miniatures, but scaled up to a real person, the head would still be much larger than human proportions.
