Warlord Games needs Sarges 10/3/13 New information in last post. @ 2013/05/23 17:15:09

Post by: Lordhat

Hey guys, Warlord Games is looking for volunteers for their Sarge Program.

Warlord Games wrote:We are looking for a few good men…and maybe some women
Do you have what it takes to join the ranks of Warlord Games elite fighting force? The Sarge program is looking for individuals with the knowledge, skill and desire to train others (mostly the desire as we can give you the rest). As an official Sarge of Warlord Games, you would represent us on the field of battle as demonstrators and event organizers. Remember, local game stores need your help!
You may be asking yourself, do I have what it takes to be a Sarge? Are you 18 years of age or older? Do you have a strong knowledge of Warlord Games or a desire to learn? Can you handle the prestige and glory that comes with representing Warlord Games? Then I think you are ready!
Listen up men (or women)! We have some rules you need to know!
• The Sarge Program member understands and agrees that he/she is an independent contractor and has no power or authority to bind Warlord Games.
• A Sarge applicant certifies that the information that he/she has provided to become a member of the Program is true and correct.
• Any rights or benefits of membership or earned as a member of the Program cannot be assigned or otherwise transferred to any other person or entity.
• Warlord Games reserves the right to modify terms, conditions and policies of the Sarge Program at any time without notice.
• Warlord Games or the Program member may terminate Program membership at any time, with or without cause.
Mission:
Our current objective is to showcase our new Bolt Actions rules to local game stores.
In order to accomplish this goal we will be issuing a field manual (Bolt Action rules), and equipment (Demo sets).
In addition to glory and the envy of your friends you will also earn gear (product) vouchers for every mission completed! Sign up now!

Sarges are especially needed in the North East United States, Washington state, Portland Oregon and Texas. We have a severe shortage of Sarges all throughout California.

To sign up, email your Name, Phone Number, name of your FLGS if you have one, to Mike.majors@warlordgames.com with the subject "Sarge".

You'll recieve one Assault on Normandy , and credit for events you run.

Holy crap, that's a solid deal. I've been interested in the game but never had anyone to play with. Now they're offering me a chance to build a bolt action group and I don't even have to pay? (Note:I don't consider my time spent teaching and running events paying lol )

Are you a sarge? How's the program?

I am not a Sarge, I do work in the North American office for Warlord; Mike Majors is in charge of the program contact him by the email posted above for additional details. We definitely want more people to help get the word out. Once you're registered in the program there is a forum you can browse and post to.

That's kind of my issue... It's become huge at my old store, but I never go there anymore :( The gamers at my store fall into 1 of 4 categories, Magic: the Gathering, 40k, Flames of War, and Malifaux.

You should sign up anyway, the worst case scenario, you get a free demo set, and spend a day or two trying the to recruit some players, best case, you hook some people on Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestly's newest games. We REALLY need some Sarges on the eastern seaboard; several stores are interested but really would love a way to gauge interest before committing.

I just shot him an Email Alf. We were actually talking about it at one of my LGSs post Adepticon as a new game system for the store to carry. That, coulpled with the fact that FFG dumped dust, and I think it could be pretty successful in my area. We could coordinate North and South Ohio.

It sprung up for 3 weeks at my store... and then died... I think I could get the FOW players in on it with the exception of like 3 of them. I know my store itself is applying for the Battlefront Rangers program... Bolt Action interests me more than Flames (but not by much). Lemme think it over. It's certainly different than other game systems that require you to have your starter sets bought and painted before you buy (which honestly is why I'm sitting here giving this more than than I would have).

I think there is a sarge in the Mansfield/Ashland area, but idk.

I really couldn't say, Alf. My personal baliwick is the east coast, Mike has Ohio. I can tell you that we definitley aren't satisfied with our market penetration just yet.

Very quick response from Alf. Looks like I may need to get some Army Painter primers to at least distinguish the boxed set models before I can get em all painted....

No response, but it's still early in Az, and I suspect Mike to be a fairly busy man.

No, because the quote I provided was pulled from the PDF copy of the flyer sent out to Independent retailers. The UK is in the process of tweaking the US site; details for the Sarge program are scheduled to be included.

The Sarge thing is new to me but Warlord have been providing this sort of set up to Clubs in the UK in the last 6 months. From memory they provided the rules and two starter forces gratis. We chose the ECW pack over Bolt Action for some reason.

So maybe its better approaching them as a club in Europe?

I signed up a long time ago, Mike and I traded e-mails fairly often then when it came time for me to get the minis they never showed, I contacted Mike about it and he said he would send them again and once again they never showed. I had just bought a starter box and I had a buddy come down to vist from far away so because I was suppose to get the Sarges kit\models I gave me my $100 starter set so he could start an army and I could start one. Sucks, that I don't have an army.

Got any in Lexington KY? The Battleforge has been pushing you guys quite a bit but I'm not sure how much it's sticking. We have a tournament next weekend so I guess I'll find out then.

If there's no sarge in the area I could take a crack at it. I already have around a 1,000pts of Germans so I could get started doing demo games fairly quickly.

EDIT: Email sent!

Who knows, maybe they'll give me a shot.

Hey guys,

Thank you, to all who applied to the Sarge Program. If you sent me your address, I have ordered you a demo kit. Now it should take about a week or so to get a demo kit once ordered. That being said there are a few factors. Since we had a high demand, they are only shipped out once a week, so if I ordered it on a Monday it did not go out until Friday. Also they are mailed Royal Post, which is even worse than USPS so over sea packages could get delayed. Let me know on the forum when you get the demo kit in or if it takes over 2 weeks.

Thank you,

Mike

Yeah I havent gotten mine yet either but Im not worried, I checked warlords FAQs and forums and is said that it takes 2 to 4 weeks to receive a package. Im hoping it shows up this week and am trying to be patient.

I also just had a friend visiting from California and he was very interested in the game, Hes about a half hour from L.A. and hes planning on letting his gaming group know about it and going to check a few of the local shops to see if they carry stuff. If there is some interest over there I think he may want to get involved.

The house doesn't come with instructions as far as I'm aware. I just went nuts with it and did my own thing. Came out fine.

Are you talking about instructions for the infantry? They don't have super detailed instructions, it's just a small piece of paper explaining what all the parts are and what they're for, you can put them together however you want.

The assembly leaflets can be found on the main warlord forum as free PDF's.

As for the sarge forum, check your private messages and I'll send you a link.

Step 1 email mark

Step 2: give him all the details he needs for shipping. My box took a couple of weeks to get across the pond to Kentucky.

Step 3: Join the Sarge forum I linked to you (you really need to be active on them, they help a lot)

Step 4: Read the Sarge FAQ in the news forum, it will answer a lot of questions.

Step 5: make a couple of good demo armies and learn the rules.

Step 6: Schedule a demo at a FLGS. To do this, talk to the FLGS Staff and find a good day for them. Nail down a time as well, like say noon to 4pm.

Step 7: Post on the upcoming events forum under the month the event will happen (for example, my first demo is in August, so I put it in the August thread)

Step 8: if the mods don't say anything, you're approved. Go ahead and run the event. Keep track of how many people show up and how long the event lasted.

Step 9: earn credit, acquire minis

It really is that easy. They're really laidback as well. As long as you're getting people into the game and using warlord minis in the demos they seem to be happy. I've heard of guys organizing leagues and tourneys, as well as demos. Just read the news forum and it will answer almost any question you could have. If that doesn't work, email mike.

The instructions should be on the sarge forums (I don't think there is a "set" demo outline), though there are sarges that have working demo plans they use.

Based on prior experience with other companies, once you have a time set for demoing, I would suggest doing the following:

If you don't have people "signed" for demos, take your stuff, set it up on a table, and sit down with a little sign saying, "Bolt Action Demos! Ask me how!" (or something along those lines). And then sit there with a smile on your face and gleam in your eye. Or have the sign up and bring some Bolt Action stuff to paint or assemble (I prefer painting).

Some general demo tips to remember:
Spoiler:
General Things to Remember
• ALWAYS be polite, even if the person is slamming the game.
• NEVER talk down another game company’s product. Feel free to use other products as a reference to build upon, especially if the customer tells you they are familiar with a particular system or product.
• NEVER talk down an aspect of the game (faction, mechanic) that you don’t like.
• KEEP smiling. Show your enthusiasm for the game.
• DEMO what the customer wants. If they want to see the shooting vehicles, show it. Combat, show that. Don’t force them into a demo spotlighting things other than their interest.
• ALWAYS save time for questions. Some come during the demo, others afterward.
• LET two customers demo against one another, don’t force one to watch. Get them involved! (even if you’ll be leading both of them through the action)
• If playing a customer, be convincing with your ability to not win all the time and enjoy doing it. It’s no fun for the
customer if you demonstrate your kick-butt Bolt Action skills by stomping them.
• KEEP the demo moving. If you can’t remember something specific in the rules, wing it and let the players know you’re doing it “this way” to keep things moving. Don’t dig out a rulebook or spend precious demo time examining the stats for an answer. Adjudicate and play on! If there’s time on the back end, show them how it should have gone.
• FIND OUT what your fellow demo-ers know and be able to refer a customer to another volunteer who knows a faction or mechanic best.

Once you have someone interested in a demo, you can either do the long demo or short demo. Long demo shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, short demo shouldn't take more than 10. But do something along the lines of the following:

The Demo
Show the basic mechanic of the game. i.e. if you were showing someone 40k, you'd show them how the d6 mechanic works with WS and BS, show them movement, activations, etc... While you're doing this, you should be involving them when you can or giving a quick enough overview to get them into the action. If you are doing a quick over view, keep their eyes on the model, move models, roll dice, make measurements. Anything game related to keep the person's eyes focused on the game.

The Short Demo:
Once you've gone over the basic mechanics of the game, ask if they have any questions.
If you still have time, ask them if they'd like to play out the turn.

The Long Demo:
Once you've gone over the basic mechanics of the game, suggest, "Now we're going to put you through boot camp and get you in to the thick of things. Are you ready?" Don't roll for initiative, as the demoer, always go first that way the player isn't standing there wondering what to do with their first turn. Show what can be done, explaining things like, "Okay now I'm going to target unit x with my unit y." Explain why the effects of the demo are happening and what the effect is.

Throughout the first turn, give direction like, "hey if your guys move into the woods, they'll get bonuses like x, y, and z." Help them get into an advantageous position. On Turn 2, pull your hands off the bike and let them play.

At the end of the demo, shake their hands, say good game, and ask if they have any questions.

Finally, tell them where they can pick up figures, and when you guys play (if you're demoing at your store/club).

Hey guys, just need to re-iterate:

If you're outside North America, you'll need to send all information, queries, and credit requests to Andrew Chesney in the UK. Also, since the Sarge forum is how we keep track of our sarges/ events, non-North American Sarges will not be allowed into the NA Sarge forum. Once again, Andrew Chesney should be taking care of our overseas Sarge details.

Email him at Andrew.chesney@warlordgames.com

Sorry about any confusion.

Yeah Im over a month and a half, but to be fair there was that issue with the terrain so really its only been a little over 2 weeks since the stuff was shipped, and then there is the holiday. Shipping FAQ says stuff can take between 2 and 4 weeks so fingers crossed we should get our stuff this week.

Would you guys think a 3 X 3 board or 2 X 2 would be good for demos?

I'd like to crank out a couple for the demos, and am thinking one small crossroads/ couple of buildindings, the other a hedgerow/ france farmland with forrest and a hill with a entrenchment.

May even make a couple more and fix for interconnection at a later date. But that's for later.

1. get a board together. 3 X 3, or 2 X 2?

For extremely basic 2 units + 1 commander vs 2 units + 1 commander, a 36x36" map is perfect.
Leaves SOME space for movement without being such an empty board that the miniatures look lost.

I'm thinking the more basic the better, your looking to spend 5-20 minutes on each match so a lot of cover and a huge board means less time that someone new can try out the game.

That was what I was thinking, plus the added bonus of cranking out two boards and demoing with a squad or two each board to get more people involved.

Want to pitch the block in 10 minutes, and play for 20.

Almost done getting my airborne squads up and running, then the board, then when the other stuff shows up, add it to some assorted ww2 terrain pieces I have running around...

I received a nondescript brown box that has journeyed farther in it's short life than I have in my entire life across the Atlantic and has arrived at my domicile. Sorry for the worry all

Cincy, you might be getting yours today as well.

Totally excited to get this going, I am completely enthralled with the fact that it includes a full, hardcover rulebook, a terrain piece and the models.

Will examine a little better later. Thanks to warlord and lordhat for this

Everyone should definitely check out this game. Bolt Action is quickly becoming "the" game on Friday nights at my store, it's fun, it's historical, and Mike Majors and the Bolt Action NA team will give hugs at conventions

My stuff came in when I was on a trip. I'm in the process of getting it up and running.

Great looking figures, and they really have some great adds in the sprue sets. If the Marines and Japanese look like this, I'll be having a couple of those sets as well, and get some styro island hopping up along with.

Biggest issue I've had in some of the metals was the weapons breaking off.

Hey all,
I'm trying not to spam the forum but we're still short in many geographical areas of the country, and this has been the best vehicle for recruitment that we've found so far.

Often, store owners and gamers alike look at our stuff and think "I'm not really interested in historicals." and blow us off. This is a tragedy as Bolt Action is a great game; More often than not the fun of the system outshines the genre of the models. A Sarge in the store means organised play, regular games and consistent opponents more often than not.
