The Dakka Painting Challenge is back! This is your chance to go up against your fellow Dakkanauts for the ultimate bragging rights!
Dakka Painting Challenge Presents: Two Tickets to Paradiso!
This Dakka Painting Challenge highlights Infinity and the most recent rulebook expansion, Campaign: Paradiso. Infinity is a 28mm skirmish game concerning small, futuristic military clashes. The combination of anime and sleek science fiction aesthetics in these highly detailed, dynamic miniatures is astounding and makes them the perfect subjects for a painting challenge!
Paradiso is a planet in the Infinity universe within the area called the Human Sphere. It is the main conflict zone between the human race and the alien threat known as the combined army and to add to that violence the terrain itself is extreme hostile! Here is an excerpt from Campaign: Paradiso to set the scene:
Paradiso is a planet where the most habitable zone has a predominantly tropical climate. Paradiso is characterized by an exceptionally fertile biosphere, including thousands of plant species, each one of them with an exceptionally fast germination growth and capacity. The planet seems to be covered by a perennial green mantle in which human cities and centers of population attempt to resist the push of the woods. Paradiso's vegetation is voracious; it invades any niche it finds, which demands a constant deforestation effort by all settlements. And when this is not made, such as in urban zones abandoned due to the alien offensive, the planet quickly reclaims the lost territory, overgrowing human-made infrastructure. Whether in open territory or urban terrain, the jungle is always present on Paradiso.
Whether you're seeing these miniatures for the first time, have a plethora of them already or you've been dying to get your hands on them; this challenge is perfect for you!
Here are a few official images from the Infinity website to wet your appetite(click for larger versions):
The Prizes:
What? Bragging rights isn't selling it for you? Well maybe our three wonderful sponsors can bait that hook for you!
Corvus Belli, the creators of Infinity, are providing the core prizes for the challenge. They've graciously offered five digital vouchers which can be redeemed from their store for Infinity products.
zariart has kindly pledged five discount codes which can be used to purchase custom airbrush services from him (although you will have to pay for any shipping and handling yourself). Check out his website to see what amazing work he does!
Shae-Konnit has generously sponsored the Judge's Choice Prize! The winner can redeem their code to purchase Infinity products including items from his Split Box Leftovers program. Free postage and packaging included!
That means all of this is up for grabs!
• 1st place prize is €100 euros from Corvus Belli and $20 dollars from zariart.
• 2nd place prize is €50 euros from Corvus Belli and $20 dollars from zariart.
• 3rd place prize is €30 euros from Corvus Belli and $20 dollars from zariart.
• 4th place prize is €30 euros from Corvus Belli and $10 dollars from zariart.
• 5th place prize is €30 euros from Corvus Belli and $10 dollars from zariart.
• The Judges Choice Award is £20 pounds from Shae-Konnit.
A massive thanks goes out to Corvus Belli, Shae-Konnit and zariart for their amazing support towards the Dakka community and if you haven't checked out their websites and services before then check out the links above!
The Rules:
You're in? Good! Here are the rules:
1. Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the challenge and the forum.
2. Choose your subject based on the theme as follows:
• You must use at least one Infinity miniature from Corvus Belli, although you may use a maximum of two.
• Conversions are acceptable as long as the miniatures are primarily made of Corvus Belli components.
• Entries must be fully painted to a minimum of a three colour standard.
• Bases must be complete to a minimum painted and flocked standard but feel free to be elaborate with design and size.
• Entries must focus on the miniatures but in the theme of 'Campaign: Paradiso' you must include the treacherous terrain too! This is a chance to let your imagination run wild, anything from a soldier wearing camouflage to an elaborate diorama base is allowed.
• Remember that size isn't everything! It's how you use it that counts!
3. Take a WIP photograph of your entry before painting.
4. Convert, create and most importantly paint your entry!
5. Take a second photograph, or selection of photographs, of your completed entry.
6. Send both photos to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com.
• If you have taken more than one picture of the completed entry you may use them to create a collage to show details.
• Only send one WIP image and one completed image for your entry. If you send more than one completed image only one will be posted.
• The image of your entry must be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels.
• Use your Dakka username as the photo's filename and include your username in the email too.
• Your entry cannot be shown on Dakka or on any other website prior to its public release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. However, once the voting is over, and the winners announced, please feel free to post pics of your entry all over the web!
• Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward.
The Deadline:
Your entry must be submitted via email before 00:01am Greenwich Mean Time (EST +5:00) on the 1st of July, 2013.
• Shortly after the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll so the community can pick their favorites. All entries will be anonymous at this stage so it's not a popularity contest.
• Public voting will last for 5 Days. The final winners will then be announced a few days later, chosen from amongst the top ten entries by a hand-picked panel of Dakka Painting Challenge judges. All prizes will be announced and awarded at this stage including the Judges Choice Award which could go to any entrant not in the final five who the judges feel deserves commendation.
-----
If you have any questions regarding the competition, please feel free to email: dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com for an official response or ask in this thread. For those of you who might be new to Dakka and haven't seen this before, check out The Dakka Painting Challenge Article.
Also, a big thanks goes out to Dakka user Casey's Law, who organized this challenge and is also helping to run it (feel free to PM him if you have any questions in addition to the other contact options presented above).
Happy painting and good luck!

Great stuff, glad to see another painting comp! Last one was a lot of fun, some really quite incredible entries!
Let's hope for a Dakka 'home' win this time also (believe Heartserenade got a 'podium' last time)

At least now no one's gonna complain if I use a really huge base.
Maybe it's the language barrier (English is my second language, after all) but I don't quite get the meaning of this. Care to elaborate?

nice one...
i've been waiting for this contest, as i was busy during the last one...
i still have yet to paint an Infinity mini, even though i've been buying them for years...
i've got one in progress with paint on it, so he's out, but what about a primer???
is a black primered mini acceptable as a WIP, or do you want to see bare metal???
thanks for getting this all together, and thanks to CB and the others for great prize support...
cheers

Still can't decide if I should just buy a new miniature and maybe start a new army with that miniature. Decisions, decisions...

I see the confusion here but he didn't mean what you think. What he was trying to say is that out of the top three you were the only one he recognised as a regular Dakkanaut.
Remember though guys, everyone is welcome to take part and many people read Dakka and never post.
jah-joshua wrote:i've got one in progress with paint on it, so he's out, but what about a primer???

I'll accept a standard miniature that has been primered as long as it's obviously not had any more done to it and as long as it's not already based.

Any Infinity miniatures/profiles are allowed, no restrictions there.
And remember you have two tickets if you want to use them both!

Nah, I know Pacific enough that I know he doesn't mean anything rude by that sentence. I was just really confused.
I think bou (the first place in that) was active for a time here in Dakka after he won. He's more active in the official forums, though.

The sponsor Shae-Konnit has a thread on Dakka where he divides up some of the boxes of miniatures if you just want some of them. He ships cheaply worldwide and sells boxes and blisters as they come as well. Definitely worth looking into that or buying straight from Corvus Belli's webstore when you are buying your miniatures for the challenge.
44431
Post by: killykavekommando
Oh, that's definitely worth checking out. I might just get say 1 or 2 standard line Kazaks from him then, as opposed to a whole box.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Brilliant, just post on his thread asking if he can do it, he drops by to check on it. He can't do everything but most stuff seems to be fine. An example of something he has difficulty getting is the Chimera, loads of people want her but he gets stuck with the other miniatures. Unless you can find someone who wants the other miniatures he is unlikely to be able to do that split. I think most people manage to get what they were looking for. I've bought from him about 4 times including one big order, he's very good.

Two questions that have popped into my head:
1) What exactly are we quantifying as "diorama bases"? Last time around we had a few that would in no way have been "legal" bases, but were in fact dioramas.
2) What "dangerous terrain" are we talking about? Those familiar with the Campaign: Paradiso book know that it's not simply jungle fighting, but there were a large number of boarding actions fought in orbit as well.

Good questions Kan!
1) Here is the portion of the rules for everyone's reference: Entries must focus on the miniatures but in the theme of 'Campaign: Paradiso' you must include the treacherous terrain too! This is a chance to let your imagination run wild, anything from a soldier wearing camouflage to an elaborate diorama base is allowed.
The wording of 'diorama base' is open to interpretation on purpose, base size is really up to each entrant. However, 'Entries must focus on the miniatures,' should govern what is a feasible size for your base.
If anyone had a particular idea that they are worried would breach the rules and they would like to keep it private I am entirely happy to answer emails and private messages. I will do so as quickly as I can.
2) I assume you are referencing 'treacherous terrain' in the above quoted text. Again the wording is intended to be vague and open to interpretation but it's always best to ask!
You've hit on a little easter egg of sorts here, the rules don't specifically require jungle terrain or even land based terrain. I have included the excerpt and images which describe possible jungle terrain for those who are unfamiliar with the fluff but it is not a limitation. If any entrants wish to use different kinds of terrain found in the zone then they can. However, it would be wise to consider what effect that may have on public voting. It could easily have a positive, negative or absolutely no effect on the votes.
I hope that helps!

Post by: Kanluwen
So basically what you're saying is we should do a brief "primer" on what the fighting for Paradiso encompassed?
Paradiso amounted to a war covering all the tropes of science fiction warfare. There was heavy cityfighting, jungle fighting, fighting inside of alien ruins, and constant boarding and counterboarding actions.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Hmm, well i'm saying it's up to each entrant... and that Jungle is massive. Eh, I mean 'safe'.

So urban and void are options? How 'treacherous' does it have to be? Traps and stuff everywhere, or just rubble and stuff?
123
Post by: Alpharius
I would think 'rubble and stuff' would show a sufficiently 'dangerous' terrain.
As Kanluwen noted, Campaign: Paradiso takes place... everywhere.
A lot of people associate Campaign: Paradiso with 'jungle'.
This isn't the case - however, if you're keeping 'public perception' in mind, along with 'public voting', well...
It is up to you!

Yep, it is as Alph says.
The rules are vague so that the entries can be as varied and individual as possible. Think of the Jungle terrain as a base line if that helps.
As an example: 'rubble and stuff' isn't that dangerous compared to the killer alien plant life but it's still well within the rules. The judges will consider how well the entries have adhered to the rules so each entrant needs to decide how they want to go about things. So if you don't feel that your chosen terrain is going to cut the mustard then consider how you could make it more dangerous.
Out of curiosity, how do people feel about the vagueness of the rules so far? It'll be useful to know for future DPCs.
Do you like the range it gives you to be creative? Or do you find it too confusing?

Post by: d-usa
Base size is the biggest thing for me right now. I have some good ideas, but I need to make sure it doesn't fall too far into the Diorama category.
123
Post by: Alpharius
It can become a 'diorama' this contest though, right?
Unless you're saying that you don't personally want to do a diorama?
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
I was asked about this via pm by someone too so here is some clarification:
Firstly, just use your judgement, it's honestly the best guide. Is the base so big I'm no longer focusing on the miniatures within it?
Last Infinity round there was a little divide of opinion with heartserenade's diorama base. This round I would consider that to be a relatively safe bet on size. Smaller would pull more focus on the miniatures, larger may sway that focus towards the terrain. It's quite objective but there is a goldilocks zone within each choice you make.
Bare in mind that going either side of the goldilocks zone might not be a safe bet but the risk might be worth it to execute your vision.
Hope that helps.

Which is understandable given that the 'theme' is the terrain of a dangerous warzone.
For all intents and purposes, the models themselves--per the wording--strike me more as the trimming rather than the focus.
The terrain of Paradiso isn't really something which seem--again, in my interpretation--to be able to be shown through simply adding on to your standard base.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Well, I see what you are saying, Kan, but the rules state that the miniatures should be the focus. The terrain is the trimming, the flavour, the decoration that sets this DPC apart.
You hit the nail on the head though, this is is all about interpretation. I designed the theme with this in mind, with all of the creativity on Dakka why bind you all down into one narrow path?
Honestly, I'm betting we are going to see some elegant single miniatures on standard bases, some teamwork dioramas and some heated duels on epic terrain. Oh and everything in between! I've got at least 5 ideas myself and I'm not even competing!

Post by: Arakasi
Didn't you win the 1st round? Never fear - my best shot is already in progress...
@Thread: I think there is a fine line to be walked on how to balance both the focus on the miniatures, but also convey the dangerous terrain of Paradiso. I suspect the best outcome will be to focus on one (possibly two) aspect(s) of the dangerous terrain - too many will quickly either take the focus away from the miniatures (unless perhaps you incorporate them somehow), look forced, or both.

While I'm here I thought I'd post a reminder of our awesome sponsors:
Corvus Belli are the creators of Infinity. Clearly their work speaks for itself! Check out their website for more Infinity goodness.
zariart produces amazing custom airbrush products of all kinds. Click on the logo above to see more bit here is a taster:

Just the base as the last major thing to go, then just cleaning up bits and bobs where I slipped up and what not while highlighting etc.

I'm glad you're all getting stuck in! Some just starting, others almost finished but there's no rush, lots of time left.
While you're painting away I'll try and get the Terrain and Beginner Thread OPs revamped in the sub forum to somewhat repay your endeavours.

I'm sorry to hear that Victor, the game has still to reach a lot of places. If you have time to wait on delivery I believe the warstore carry Infinity and you could check with Shae Konnit, he might be able to deliver quickly enough for you.
Can anyone help Victor out with a source for Infinity miniatures in Philly?

Thanks, yeah I was thinking about ordering something i found a few models i would like to paint if i cant find anything in philly by end of day tomorrow i'll just order something. I never do contest but this seems fun since infinity is definitely interesting who knows might start an army XD

The Warstore is your "best bet" for Infinity.
There is also Atomic Empire Games which might not have everything that The Warstore has.

Thanks i called them today they only had a few of the larger boxes though which i almost bought lol

I should have mentioned that both of those locations are not in Philadelphia, but rather just the two largest retailers that I know of.
Atomic Empire is my 'local' shop, but a good hour away.
The Warstore generally has everything in stock first here in the US.
I know Empchild has Infinity stuff for sale; but I've not bought from him.
I do not know if Mikhaila has Infinity stuff in stock at his Showcase Comics stores(which are actually in Philadelphia if I remember correctly). You could PM Mikhaila and ask him.

OK, I'm ordering a model now! XD just to be certain the goal is treacherous jungle terrain/theme correct?
37231
Post by: d-usa
Well, the theme is "treacherous terrain from Paradiso". The actions on that planet range from jungle, to city, to even space boarding actions. So lots of treacherous terrain to choose from.
The consensus was that "most" people think 'jungle' when they think of Paradiso, so tailoring your submission to preconceived motions about the planet might help you with votes.
Or at least that is my interpretation of the conversations we have had on this topic in this thread...

That was actually the last place I called but no single models only the boxes so I ordered one up. My package arrived today and I plan to spend the night painting now that i have the scheme planned out. I gotta find somewhere to make my wood rectangles into wood ovals tomorrow lol i borrowed my neighbors tablesaw to get the rectangles after talking the construction crew into handing over a piece of scrap wood, spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to make it go up and down lol levers everywhere!

I believe most image editors on PCs should have that function. If yours doesn't there might be a image editing website with a private upload function but I'm not sure.
Can someone else give some better advice on that please? Someone will definitely be better informed than I on the subject...

I found it pretty bloody awkward to re-size with piccasar - needed a little help from paintbrush here and there. That sentence makes me feel like I'm from the stone age...
It is finished and I have sent the e-mail, so now of course I feel like I should have taken a few hundred more pics just to be sure I got the best shots.

Guys, I am really, really sorry about this but I have to bow out.
I have been stricken with a silly case of pnemonia this last week (and has thus been preoccupied with coughing my lungs up and not dying) and as such have been unable to pain anything as I had planned. Aaaaand tomorrow morning I am boarding a plane to Palermo on Sicily for a weeks' worth of vacation so I just don't have time to finish my piece.
I am mortified over this and do hope that you all can fogive this most severe of transgressions.
I will however finish the piece and post once I get home from Italy.

A few more entries in now but I think most of them will come through tomorrow. I hope you're all furiously painting away the hours!
Many entrants have sized there pictures wrongly at first and had to fix them, this is an understandable mistake. Please don't do this tomorrow though as there might not be enough time before the deadline for new entries to be fixed and I will likely have to reject the entry.
• The image of your entry must be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels.
This is not the maximum size as many have read it to be. These are the only sizes I can accept.
Thanks folks!

Yup, was painting into the wee small hours to get it done!
And if 1000x800 (or 800x1000) is the only sizes you can accept surely that is the maximum size? Or do the images have to be 'exactly' 1000x800 etc?

I am thoroughly unhappy with my photography skills/photo editing skills (and to be honest my painting skills too). I demand that all judges travel to Australia to properly assess my work. I couldn't decide between the collage or the single image, and ended up with the collage...time will tell, right? Also to include a piece of the model or not was a hard choice...I decided against it. Again, time will tell. But I never expected to do too well, just get a pretty model and get it painted Anyway, submission sent. I think I did the scaling right...

Approximately 7.5 hours to go! Keep it going guys, power nap if you have to! And keep these entries rolling in, every single one is excellent, I'm hugely impressed!
Only two of the entries are still in the incorrect sizes, I'm sure we can sort that out before the deadline. If this could be you then please check your emails and fix your entry quickly if it is wrong. I believe one of our entrants even used the Paint software on their PC to get the correct size so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Again, the sizes given are the only sizes I can accept and the entries must be exactly that size. The sizes are either 1000x800 or 800x1000 pixels.
In other news: I watched Little Shop of Horrors earlier, I'm calling it carnivorous plant research...

Most entries are coming in ready to go, a few need altered but they have been quick to sort out. There have been quite a few language barrier problems, hopefully they will all be resolved in time though.

Hey everyone, that's time! ...well it was an hour ago but I wanted to give a little extra just in case.
I will collect the entries together and they will be posted in a new thread within a day or two. The new thread will be linked here so that you can find it easily.
I am honestly astounded by the quality of the entries, good luck to every one of you! It's going to be a very closely run thing!
It's bed time for me so I won't be collecting the entries together until I wake. I guess that could give you a couple of extra hours if there is someone out there quietly sobbing over an almost finished entry.
There is one person who still needs to resize but there has been an extreme language barrier and a few other problems. I will accept their resize if they can get it in quickly, I may even do it for them. Apart from that we only lost one other entry along the way, another language barrier problem, the person had already posted their entry progress on another site as they didn't understand the rules. I am impressed with their honesty in coming forward and I hope we see them again.
Right, one email to send and that's me. Talk soon folks, thanks for getting involved!
