Half Life 2 ( i dont know why i just didnt enjoy it but i like portal and TF2 but I loved half life 3 )
COD 7,8 and 9 (The ones before were a laugh but then it went downhill.)
Halo Wars (WHY was this made i really hated it but i like the other halos a lot)
Oblivion (Again i just didnt enjoy it but i like skyrim a lot oddly)
Assassins Creed Brotherhood and revelations (I just hated these ones but i love 2 and 3 so much)
So there, bring on the valve fanboy rage.

I don't know if I can name 5. Certainly, while COD and the later Halo games have more than their fair share of fanatics, there are also a LOT of detractors. The early COD games were worthy of praise (specifically 1, 2, and 4: MW). Oblivion had its niggling issues like the unusual faces that jar with immersion, but if you can look past that it's too similar to Skyrim as far as the gameplay's concerned to be *THAT* bad.
I will say that one game I thought was horrifically overrated was Halo - the first one. I don't think I remember any reviews giving it anything less than 90%, and little mention of any problems. I will admit I was impressed with the vehicles, which at the time people had been waiting for for years. The limitation to two weapons and recharging shields were fresh too, if not *completely* original. But despite all this innovation, the slower pace of the game compared to previous titles meant it just wasn't as *fun*. Numerous times I would see attacks coming and not be able to evade because the controls were on the sluggish side compared to, say, Quake or Half-Life. By contrast, the enemies moved slower and so were easier to target... but would take some punishment before going down, making the weapons feel lacklustre. These little things added up to a feeling of frustration, not one of empowerment which is needed when the plot demands you're the big bad saviour of mankind as we know it.

No but I hear the fans of the original despise the new one. I don't despise it. I enjoyed it just fine. But it was a strickly 'meh' game for me. I could take it or leave it.

Post by: fishy bob
@timetowaste85, Final Fantasy 7, as a game, in a vacuum, is horrid. But its universe and the "spin off" games that play part of the same story are great. No FF7 - no Crisis Core, and no Dirge of Cerberus. So in the end I have to disagree with you.
Games that come to mind are Bioshock and God of War.
Edit: And FIFA. Every time I hear someone speak of this game in favourable light, I get sick.

For the most part, then... you hear wrongly. I've heard the opposite - the things that were changed make sense in terms of how games have changed over the years between the two. You may have been hearing about Invisible War, which was a largely forgettable sequel released in 2003. Still a great game in its own right but a disappointment compared to the first.
DX: HR was *eagerly* awaited by us old-timers, but it has to be said a lot of things that Deus Ex introduced first time around have been shoehorned into lots of games since. Things like having skills to level up in a shooter, putting lore within the game in datapads and newspapers, having multiple choice conversations and even actions and missions that would permanently alter aspects of the plot... it's easy to see how these things can now be taken for granted.

Biggest Overrated Game of all time - Final Fantasy 7. *raises anti-flame shield just in case*
I have no idea about a good order for the other 4, but I guess I'll go with Halo, Gears of War, God of War 3, Infamous.
Oh wait, remembered some more: Call of Duty after the second one (the first 2 IMO were amazing. It all went downhill from there), all GTAs except 1, 2 and Vice City. Ya know, the ones that were actually FUN.

Halo Franchise, The only reason Halo got any where at all was it was the only half decent game on the original Xbox.
Crisis. It was pretty to look at and all. But game play wise was a complete farse. You got Koreans, Space age nano suits, remote island, And Aliens. Thats a B-Movie Plot not even Bruce "the Chin" Campbell would touch. The suit ability's was completely made useless wile fighting aliens. as well.
COD anything after 2 was Terrible. MW was an OK game but still didn't have the Gameplay values of COD 1 or especially 2.
Lego games, I dont know why so many people like them, I cant stand them, And i should like them being as my GF's cousin is the bloody Head games developer for TT games. and i get them all for free. I just dont see why they are so popular. for kids yeah. but i see adults go crazy for them lol
Oblivian. Its pretty, and its massive. too masive. it gets boring really fast, and it lacks what Fallout 3 had in the way of its whit that made you want to keep playing and playing.

My SO, who is soon going to have 2 degrees in American Religious History, says that Bioshock Infinite is her favorite game and easily one of the best mass market works pertaining to early 20th century religious thought ever.
So I think it depends a lot what you thought of the story and the attention to detail thereof. Automatically Appended Next Post: 1. FFVII: It's not overrated in the same way as the others. It's just that it has aged QUITE badly and people haven't noticed yet. I would not say that it was overrated upon release. It was incredible back then. People overrate it as standing up to today's standards, which it does not.
2. GTAIV: Very high reviews, lack of coherency between narrative and gameplay, uninteresting story that works against the fun mechanics. Not as much bad as.. off somehow. The fun pieces that made the other GTAs are all there, but somehow it's just not fun this time.
3. Devil May Cry series: Competently made, good character design and such. None of them are anywhere near as mindblowing as you will hear them described.
4. Fable 3: This one isn't "overrated" as much as overhyped. I think by now everyone knows it wasn't actually very good, but there was a time when it was expected to change everything. lol whoops.
5. Halo 2: Same as above. When it first came out everyone just FREAKED out, but then after the dust settled, we realized it wasn't really that great compared to 1 and later to the superb 3.

I'm going to have to fight this now. When Fallout first came out, it was in a day when the game fallout 3 couldn't have existed. Not just because fallout 2 hadn't even come out yet mind you, but because graphics and general computers weren't that advanced. That truly isn't a fair comparison. Especially since the two first fallout's were designed for a completely different gaming generation, and fallout 3 was born in a generation, which clearly wouldn't accept a game like fallout's 1 and 2. 4. Star craft 2. (Yeah okay its star craft 2..but it feels more like 1.5 than a freaking new game to me.)
5. C&C 4 (So much freaking hypes and media talk about this game and yet it turned out to be so disappointing for being the final game in the C&C universe.

I actually dont care that this made your list. Im confused on your reasons.
The games cover many of the major historical battles including, Carentan, St. Lo, Omaha, Cherbourg, Operation False Pocket, Caen, Op. Goodwood, Op. Market Garden, Stalingrad, Moscow, Berlin, That Polish city I forgot the name of, Leningrad.
In fact, I find the only battle it was missing was Kursk (seriously, how the feth was that NOT in the game?)
as for the speaking English, personal preference, I hate it when it is the other way around( they speak their actual language, I dont speak German or Russian so not understanding my men pisses me off)
There are plenty of reasons why those games would make the list so you dont need to defend yourself, I just found those 2 reasons to be strange_)

1: Counter-Strike. (Generic CoD clone number 639! But it's "the hardcore" and anyone who doesn't like it is a "nooby console scrub"! Also it has atrocious gameplay, terrible balance, and one of the worst communities this side of League of Legends!)
2: I Wanna Be The Guy (It has literally no interesting features other than being stupidly difficult)
3: DOTA 2/LoL (Basically a WoW-alike MOBA with RTS controls in both cases. I'm listing them both because LoL is basically a clone of DOTA 2, and they're both awful)
4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Compared to, say, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 or any of the new Mario games, this one is just...bad)
5: The original Legend of Zelda for the NES (looks hideously ugly, way too difficult, only about 4 music tracks, confusing, just plain boring...Out of the entire Zelda franchise, it and the criminally bad Zelda 2 are the only ones that aren't excellent)

I find it odd to say a game is overrated if you've never played it (though there is no requirement to do as such, just my thoughts).
I'm having trouble creating this list, so in no particular order:
1. The early Assassins Creeds. Got reeeeaaal repetetive for me (heard they have gotten better, may have to take a look again).
2. Candy Crush
3. Most Final Fantasy games (but not KH series, odd I know).
4. The new Mortal Kombat (it was cool, but meh).
5. WoW ( I guess cause I've been entrenched in the Diablo camp for so long).

1-5) Diablo 3: It might have worked as a bad diablo clone if they had chosen a different name. They even deviated from the perfect controls of Diablo 2 to implement the atrocious controls common of a bad diablo clone. To top it all they thought it wise to have horrendous item drop chances and have us scour the auction house instead of really playing the game to acquire any useful equipment.

This, I don't understand why people nitpick Company of Heroes so much.
For instance:
"Why are my units standing near each other but missing?"
"Why are the germans speaking english?"
"Why don't my tiger tanks one shot shermans across the map?"
Conversely: "Why don't I get free air and artillery strikes all the time whenever I see a german tank?"
"Why are they doing World War 2? its so boring!"
I can assure you that other games commit far worse historical sins, but CoH always seems to be in the firing line.

2-5 in no specific order:

-Pokemon.

1) Rage - Loved a lot about the game but the story felt rushed and it was about 3 hours long.
2) Homefront - If they had actually finished the story I may have enjoyed the game... not that there was a lot to the story anyway..
3) ...
Okay I'm gonna have to think for the rest of them...

Im going to be hated for saying it, but Fallout 3.
Dont get me wrong, i love the story telling and the background but the combat.... I HATE the combat system for it, its a spray and pray game, until you hit RB and just click. Its messy and ruins the flow of combat, as it pulls you out every few seconds. The combat turned me off so much that i couldn't even be bothered to pursue the story any more.

Most of this is probably me just bitching about games I don't like as opposed to actual objective analysis so prepare for whinging and complaining.
1. FF7. Never been a fan of FF at all and I've always felt like the praise that game has gotten like it's the second coming of Jesus riding a motorcycle made of sex is completely unwarranted. If you hate games that are extremely bloated and difficult to understand, you probably hate JRPGs and this is the top of the pops when it comes to JRPGs. Innovating your static JRPG combat system doesn't impress anyone and its status as 'da first 3d FF gaem on PS1' isn't that big of a deal considering 90's polygon graphics are ucking fugly and having to switch disks all day isn't fun. It probably would have been better as a game like Castlevania SOTN that tried to make a better 2d game with a newer console as opposed to horribad 90's 3D console graphics, plus the game could have been more refined with more disk space.
2. Uncharted/The Last of Us. Yeah. I only played TLOU for maybe 2 hours after I thought to myself "Hey, this game is like Uncharted! No wait, this game feels exactly like Uncharted." My biggest problem with both of those games is there's basically no reason to play them multiple times instead of 'I want to play them again." I could never bring myself to pay $60 for a game I could feasibly blow through in one day and have no real reason to play through multiple times. Also, the overabundance of cutscenes annoys the gak out of me, which is why MGS4 was fething unplayable for me (although, the difference between these games and MGS4 is that MGS4 actually gets gak for having too many cutscenes, how bout that.)
3. Battlefield 3. Every time I hear someone talk about BF3 there's always some stealthy criticism of CoD in there somewhere and how this game is just liiiiiiiightyears ahead of CoD and I just don't see it. Everything from the control scheme to the framerate just feels sluggish compared to CoD (which, you have to admit, it's pretty cool that CoD's developers got a modern graphics engine to maintain 60fps on consoles), the gameplay is really too similar to CoD's to be that much better, and its singleplayer mode feels almost exactly like MW3's down to the stupid cliche military lingo and the 'OH MY GOD SOMETHING FELL OVER BLACK OUT AND SWITCH CHARACTERS NOW' moments.
4. Doom 3. You know, I'm quite fond of pre-2005 games but I reaaaaaaaally hated this one. It's competing against games like Half Life 2 and Halo 2 and I still don't understand why it's even considered a 'classic' of the last console generation. It's a big, ugly, clunky melon-fether of a game that's trying as hard as it possibly can to be scary and failing hard. It's difficult to be scared of monsters jumping out at me when I've got a shotgun that sounds like it could split The Hulk in half and I've got plenty of ammo. Doom was never a horror game and trying to make it into a combination of Dead Space and Quake 3 just doesn't feel fun.
5. Portal 2. Remember when I said I didn't really like games that you really only will play through once without good reason? Yeah. Bought this game, played it through in 2 days, never even installed it again. Yeah Wheatley was funny and GLaDOS and blah blah I'm still trying to stop cringing over the stupid repetition of jokes from the first game (feth you if you think 'the cake is a lie' is still funny, by the way). It was entertaining but there were a lot of points that I got stuck and the puzzles sometimes seemed impossible and the story just can't make up for that. It was quite entertaining, of course, but I just couldn't in good faith claim that that game really was Game of the Year 2011. There's no universe where that game was literally better than EVERYTHING that came out that year.
Honorable Mention: Dark Souls. This game is so well designed it kills me but the game is so completely inaccessible and devoid of any hints as to what to do ever it really straddles the boundary between 'a hard game' and 'this game is fething with you on purpose'. Yeah, I probably hate it because I can't beat it, but whatever.

Yep.
Rage was fun, had awesome music, looked fantastic, had great gameplay, cool characters and a big open world that still let you know where you were meant to be going.
These "top games of the 90s" are the opposite-ugly, frustratingly difficult, confusing, clunky, pretty lacking in the sound department, just awful.

...waaaaaaaaaaaaaat.... Ugly, well, graphics were great back then and IMO a lot of them still hold up fine, guess that´s an age thing so fair, you´ll get that one. Frustratingly difficult? Awardingly difficult, games these days are way to easy, I breeze through everything on hard nowadays. Clunky? NOPE. Lacking in sound department...... I have yet to find a game with a better soundtrack then the first few command and conquers just to name one franchise from back then.
Also, if we view Rage through the same scope of it's age. TERRIBLE textures, forgettable music and sound, crap story, terrible ending, easy as balls and not a single mechanic that actually helped immersion.
In the end though, to each their own. Something about opinions and arses.

Calm yourself.
Besides, if they want to focus on a console release as a priority then there's nothing wrong with that. Just play it on a console. One particular gaming crowd can't have everything all the time.
Next thing you know we'll have people shouting at Nintendo for not bringing poor old Mario to the PC/Mac/Xbox One or whatever.
