Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Riveters - Contest #7
"Fire at will"
Automatically Appended Next Post: Competition Theme:
Gun Emplacement's is the theme for this next Terrain competition, Think big guns built into the terrain ready to rain fire down on any who stand in your way.
The main two things I want to concentrate on in this contest are Detail and Imagination.
For this reason I want everyone to take the idea of a Gun Emplacement and turn it on it's head
(and no that doesn’t mean building one upside down), Think outside the box, do something that hasn't been done before, really be creative with what you build and how you build it, be original.
For instances, what about a Xenos Gun emplacement, something built by an alien race,
be it Eldar, Tau, Necrons, etc. What about an Ork Gun built from scrap (just think of all the Rivets)
or even a Tyraind Gun Emplacement, something that's completely Biological.
Even an imperial weapon platform can be redesigned and reimagined, into something new,
but the choice of what you build and who you build it for are entirely up to you.
The Rules:
So as not to tread on anyone’s creativity here, the rules are quite simple.
Your gun emplacement should be a model fixed into position, meaning it was either built at that location, or is too heavy or complex to move anywhere else. For example a basilisk Cannon built into a fortified bunker would be fine. But a basilisk Cannon mounted on a parked tank is technically a Vehicle, and not a gun emplacement.
Try to make your entry as much a Terrain piece as it is model, as this is a Terrain competition your entry should be a balance of both.
For instance a gun placed behind a few sandbags is more model than Terrain, however a gun built into a reinforced bunker, that's been dug into a cliff face is a much more interesting concept.
And that's basically it for the rules, (I said they were simple) if anyone does have any questions on rules, or anything else for that matter, just leave a comment here and I'll get back to you.
Prizes:
The winner will receive Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters, plus a prize created by myself. Now as I'm judging this competition I obviously cant enter my own creation, but that doesn’t stop me from building one. So I've decided to build my own Gun Emplacement, and give it as a prize to the winner.
Deadline:
The last Contest (run successfully by Meade) lasted for 3 month's, which worked very well for all who entered, so I’m continuing with this and running the competition from now until the end of October, possibly drifting into November.
This should give everyone plenty of time to build and submit their entry’s.
Now I dont' know about anyone else but I love to see peoples work in progress (WIP),
so please feel free to post up you WIP pics, and share your building progress with everyone else.
Last but not least, if anyone's reading this and your thinking that you'd love to enter this competition
but you don't think you have the skills to compete, don't worry, and give it a go anyway.
Anyone can enter this Contest regardless of skill or ability, just have fun with it,
Call me old fashioned but I think that's the most important thing.
So good luck to all who enter, and I look forward to seeing what you create .
i like how you defined the size and mobility (lack of) to the gunemplacement... it draws a line but it still leaves so many oportunities.... this will be a very cool comp!
atm i am still undecided... weather to give a xenos race a go or to build something steampunky...again....hmmm...
Hmm.. might give it some waaaaaaaaaagh-ish thought, will post pictures if I go through with it.
EDIT: I'm just going to edit this to say that I've spent the whole time after posting the above message brainstorming and I just came up with something I'm going to try to pull off. WIP pictures to come!
Casey's Law wrote: I've got so many ideas for this it's ridiculous. Some are a bit outside the box though so I'll need conformation if I choose one of those.
I'll probably wait and start work after Briancj's comp has passed.
Yeah that's fine, If your not sure just let us know. But really the the stranger, and more outside the box the better .
LOL... currently i am woriking for briancj´s comp... so this might still be possible...i have a nice mag-light that would look quite cool as a big gun...
and ROFL... i know what you are telling us with that star trek wish...... that would be so cool... but in fact i would rather have worf shoot data^^
Well you said you wanted work in progress, so here goes. It is imperial, just haven't decided if its guard, marine, or mechanicus yet. If I build a second one they might fall to chaos and become slaaneshi . For the contest part it will be mounted into a separate terrain piece similar to the fortress of redemption base, but the final resting spot will be on top of an imperial building.
The cannon has 180 degree arc and 360 degree rotation. Look out star destroyers. For scale idea the ball is 3" diameter.
Stole the idea from the scene in Star Wars on hoth. It can be used in any scifi game as a BFG, objective, or small moon in the battle fleet gothic game.
So, allowing the smaller guns and all, i want to know...
Does a small bunker, in a hollowed out garbage pile, fitted with a twin linked heavy bolter placement, to be used on gangers and zombies, qualify for this competition?

If so, i'm IN!
Absolutely, sounds like a great idea, and I've never seen one like that before, so it's also original.
Plus the idea give's you plenty of opportunity to go nuts with detail, especially on the garbage heap.
If your still in, welcome aboard. I look forward to seeing what you come up with .
Aye, still in, cutting up a garbage bag as we speak... now to figure out how to get them worked in and around the rest without having to be primed like the rest...
I thought you were going for a weird take on the TARDIS when I saw this pic
Righty, so I need to get Briancj's competition out of the way but inital thoughts are to create something using an Ork Gargant belly gun with a big crane for loading the huge shells. Glad we have plenty of time for this one...
xXWeaponPrimeXx wrote: I'm toying with some ideas, but I can't seem to imagine them properly.
Try doing what I did over the weekend then.
Just jump in and Start Building something,
then after two days decide you don't like it,
come up with a better idea,
and then start all over again
Always works for me .
I don't have the mats for that :(
I'm thinking something Tyranid-y (since xeno is encouraged and you don't get more xeno than 'nids) but all my idea's are coming off much more Zerg than Tyranid.
Won't be able to get started for a couple weeks, starting a Blood Angels (Lamenters) army, and also trying to complete Braincj's terrain competition, deadline a couple weeks away (I think). But got loads of ideas for this. Wanted a create a slightly larger piece of terrain just for fun. So yeah, looking forward to this, and seeing what people come up with.
I'm thinking of going with Nids too. It's the least developed of my ideas but it's the one that I can tie into a project I was planning anyway. Decisions, decisions...

No worry's, we've got a good 3 months for this competition, hopefully that'll be plenty of time for you to bring some of those ideas to life.
@ Casey'sLaw. I've been hoping at least one person would do a Tyranid entry, but two would be fantastic, really looking forward to seeing where this goes.
And @ xXWeaponPrimeXx, as far as the Nid - Zerg thing goes, your right there are differences, so I would focus on exaclty what those differences in design are, and use them in your entry.
I too need to stock up on plastic card, don't know what I used it all on , but I'm almost out.
Ramos Asura wrote: Hmmmmm would an Ork Pulsa Rokkit be suitable as an emplacement?
yeah that's a great idea, and as long as you have some kind of launch platform, and a way of showing that the site is reusable, Then that should be fine, cant wait to see it .
some interesting things starting to appear, defiantly looking forward to the 'nid terrrain
A saying of mine; "If inspiration and motivation are the waters of life, I am a desert." sums up my mind atm so might be sitting this one out...
... so if anyone wants some tips, ideas or opinions I might be able to help.
@theophoney: I was thinking of doing something similar to what you are, so you've got to be on the right track
@hk: If you want a hand with the judging let me know.

Sorry to hear that you might not be entering this one, but thanks for the Judging offer, I might take you up on that .
I considered to do this a lot, not sure if I can make It 'cause an other contest is on and is a lot more useful for me and my ork army, if I get the time after Panda and Ruglud 6th round I'll give You the rokkit factory of Da Krazy Pak...
vim_the_good wrote: Count me in. This will be my first modeling comp. Looking forward to seeing what people do.
Question - Would a fixed emplacement, designed to melee attack count or does it have to be a ranged weapon?
Cheers Vim
That's a interesting idea, I like it, but i would suggest trying to incorporate a gun somewhere into your melee weapon, it doesn't have to be big or long range,
but some kind of gun built-in would qualify it more as a Gun Emplacement.
Hopefully this works with your ideas, as I'm keen to see what you come up with .

Ha ha ha ha. In fact you have just improved my idea Cheers Vim
With two contests running I couldn't resist building one piece to combine the two. Brian's 'built-on-a-cd' contest, and the League Gun emplacement contest can easily be combined, if you are me Here's some prelimenary pics now i finally found my charger, camera, and all the supplies for my modelbuilding again. The idea is to build a gun emplacement, on a cd, hidden in a heap of garbage. The beginning is here, now its on to adding more and more garbage, junk, bags, sacks and discarded stuff. Garbage bags will be built created after everything else, as they cannot and should not be primed... Here's the pics, please leave comments...
The obligatory cd, in this case a copy of the Best of Bon Jovi. An ideal cd to screw up...
Surplus model stuff, the other requirement in Brian's contest. The garbage bags will also be filled with excess junk.
What is a gun emplacement without a gun? Twin linked heavy bolter with either laser targeting, or maybe just a flashlight...
The beginnings of a hidden emplacement. Not yet hidden, but it will eventually be covered in a mountain of garbage.
@ MauS: I like what I'm seeing so far, plus the idea of building it on a CD and combining your two competition entry's into one is clever.
I look forward to seeing the end result.
Thanx HK... I considered combining the third contest as well, papanid and panda's contest, but as that requires speed i decided against it. I just don't see a gun emplacement going anywheres, let alone FAST...

Unless I frisbee the cd maybe... hrm...
You could have something fast attacking the terrain your building
@ Vik: Thanks for the update, looking good so far. I do like the use of that water pistol as the tower, very inventive .
I've just got back from an expedition (trip to the shops) where I have successfully restocked my plastic card supplies.
All that's left to do now is to start building .
thanks mates... I was surfing dakka that day and had that old watergun next to my PC desk... and while I was reading I played with the toy... in-between some pewpewpew sounds I turned the gun this way and that and then realization hit me^^
ashotninja wrote: ok... im in ... gonna spend this weekend thinking of something to build.
Welcome to the competition, Looking forward to seeing what ideas you may have, and I agree with OneManNoodles, " The Crazier the better"
Also I've just had a look at some of your work, Brilliant stuff, especially the painting it's top notch.
I have to say my attention was drawn to one model in particular, the Psycho Mantis EDF Psyker, Very nicely done .
Sorry about the sideways picture - not sure why my phone uploads them like that...
However, my first WIP's:
A small mound made from broken up packaging, pinned with cocktail sticks and covered with PVA and tissue paper. More cocktail sticks poked through to form spikes. Some resin pour gates to form anti-tank style dragons teeth. A bit of MDF spure from some laser cut terrain, along with some injection moulding inlets from model bases to form a telegraph pole.
Once it is dry I will add some sand to the mound, add broken wires to the telegraph pole and mount the gun on the ring. I hope it can be entered into both the -=]_=- terrain contest and also Briancj's contest
I have decided to go for the second of my ideas. It is a giant robot of unknown origins that has ended up buried so only the shoulder and one arm are showing. It has come into the possession of Da Orks who have started to 'improve' it by attaching lots of guns This will give a fixed gun position that also has a very strong punch.
All da lootz so far.
My first idea was a giant brain plant that fired psychic shots but the Orks won
@ Vim_the_good. What an excellent idea, I was so hoping someone would build something like that , cant wait to see it.
@SilverMK2. Looking good so far, plus I like the description of all the varied parts and pieces you've used.
It's great to see projects being built using every day odds and ends, Plus the variety of idea's I've heard so far really is going to make this an interesting competition.
And to those who haven't started their entry's yet, don't worry, this competition has only just begun, and there is loads of time left yet so there's no rush .
Well, more of an update. Nothing new or innovative, but it will work on my table.
Orbital battery now with Quonsen hut frame. Piping channels the power from the underground complex, also water coolant system to increase firing speed. The other side has to vents on it, nothing major. The base is made from two of the dust tactics Quonsen huts glued together and the white ring is the top of a kool aid drink mix container. He ball of the gun is a Lego asteroid field from the Star Wars line. The gun is part of my ultrasonic cleaner I never use (ring stand).
So, I also made a start even though I still need to finsh my entry in Briancj's comp... What the hell I thought, let's have too many projects on the go at once, why change the habit of a lifetime...
Sneaky peaky of the concept - and yes, it's Orky and the piece will be called 'Big Berfa'- that's all i'm saying right now
I'm definitely in for this one.. probably will take about a month or so before work really gets going though. Can't figure out what to do yet really, probably some bigass possessed daemon siege gun but maybe not who knows? I want to be sure it's more terrain not so much gun model. But all the other entries look great so far, it's shaping up to be a lively competition this time around...
@ Theophony: that looks really awesome I'm almost shocked by how quickly you've come up with something.
@ Ruglud: if that pipe is meant to be a gun barrel, then I like where this is going.
I've come up with something, I'd be following the ascetic of the previous competition, gothic with a hint of mechanicus.
I don't really have the materials to start just yet and with so many other things on my desk atm It might not come to something.
inmygravenimage wrote:@Ruglud, if I didn't know better if say you were planning an orky version of Gustav, the giant German ww2 railgun.
Funny you should mention that, I was actually looking at timages of that and thinking about making an IG version fo the competition, but then decided to go Ork. The name is somewaht inspired by Gustav, but the build will be going in a different direction...
OneManNoodles wrote:@ Ruglud: if that pipe is meant to be a gun barrel, then I like where this is going.
@ Ruglud: I'm already intrigued as to where this idea might be heading, just after seeing your very early progress. .
My own project, and the prize for this Competition is well under way, having had to scale it back a few times, due to my over ambitiousness.
But it will still be something original, and contain lots and lots of rivets .
Hi all.
A little slow on my project after getting over first week back at work after holidays :/
Great to see other peoples projects starting.
@Theophony - I can believe you have built all that already. You going to put it onto a scenic base?
@Ruglud - Cool. I could imagine that cannon firing shells full of boyz
For me I have started building the upper arm
Origionaly the elbow looked like this
But quickly found out that I had to come up with a stronger construction when trying to fix a mistake :O
My plan at the moment is to build the robot as it was then Orkify it. C&C welcome
So I just noticed this thread now. If it's not too late I'd like to join in. Do we post our WIP picturws right here in this thread or create a new threadjust for our own work? Thanks!
Warboss_Waaazag wrote: So I just noticed this thread now. If it's not too late I'd like to join in. Do we post our WIP picturws right here in this thread or create a new threadjust for our own work? Thanks!
No It's definitely not too late to enter, This competition has only just begun, and will be running to the end of October, so you've got plenty of time .
And yes please post your WIP pictures here, It's always great to see how everyone's projects are progressing.
If you have any questions about the competition just let me know, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
@vim, it didn't take that long to build, it was really simple. And now it's primed, but the humidity may have caused some issues, I'll be able to tell tomorrow hopefully.
The arm is looking good so far, can't wait for the rest of it .
So, I was throwing ideas around in my head about what to build..."Should I make something Eldar? Should I make something Orky because I'll be able to use it for my Orks?"
I'm still kind of torn, but these are my 2 ideas and I'm wondering if anybody has a preference for what they'd like to see me do.
1. A Dark Eldar anti-aircraft battery. A sleek, elegant, and wicked multi-barreled emplacement on a swiveling mount.
-OR-
2. A massive Orky catapult that throws whole tanks, gunz blazing at my enemies.
The Dark Eldar piece would be a challenge for me, because I've never built something like that. The Ork thing would be easier because when I'm not making terrain, I'm just making more orks.
argh... that´s a toughy... the Eldar idea sounds good...but well... that orky tank tossa...now that is as epic as it gets... I think for the pure badassery you have thought up you now need to make this...Eldar tech for later maybe you could make it fling an elf tank even
@warboss, why would orks throw away perfectly good blown up tanks??? I love the idea, and maybe one mekboy would do it, but a enough mekboys to actually build one. I'd love to see it though because of rule of cool though , especially if you made it functional and took it to a tournament .
I like the idea of an Ork/Grot launcher better! Hook it up like a medieval catapult, but with big motors and cables on the fulcrum, this is actually a great way to fire orks into combat since they can survive the impact much better than human can and you can launch them randomly into an advancing force. I feel like if it were to launch a tank the tank would just explode.
How about if a group of Orks are launched in a giant hamster ball covered in spikes. After the initial carnage caused by the spike ball rolling until it stops, the Orks jump out and start hacking what’s left into steak sized portions. Perfect for the post battle BBQ
Experimental Rules: Works like a transport with a transport capacity of ten or 20 depending on size, 36" inch range, roll the scatter die and every ork takes a toughness test to see if they survive, you place the Orks in a large scatter template, if you can place any Ork in B2B then they are directly in combat or else they can charge in the ensuing combat phase.
@ Warboss_Waaazag: Those are both great idea's, but from reading the previous comments its sounds like the Ork Tank Catapult is the favorite,
and I'd have to agree.
I love the idea of a contraption that can launch tanks across battlefields,
it's a one of those crazy inventions that only an Ork would dare to construct .
Well, it looks like the Tank Tossa wins out. The idea is to have it throw functional tanks, not broken ones. I'm wondering if I should design the ammo (I.e. the tank) specifically to be hurled. Your comments seem to indicate "Yes".
Lovely hazard stripes! That high-pigment yellow is the best paint they've made! Usually though you need a brighter yellow on top of it, but that looks good!
Think I may have goofed up my paint job. Tried different washes, now it looks like a rainbow on the tank. Will try later to save it. But adeptus battle grey with asurman blue wash is sweet in my opinion .
I think I’ve been bitten by the comp bug... If it is still possible, I’d like to join in too.
Time and skills permitting, I’ll try to turn this:
Into something resembling this:
(I’ve had that cannon-to-be piece and a minidome camera cover lying around for a long time, just waiting for an excuse to be turned into something more useful, and the idea in this comp is too good to be passed over)
@ Littletower: Well the Competitions running until the end of October, so you've got plenty of time,
so if your still up for it, I'd be keen to see you bring that piece of concept art to life .
@Warboss_Waaazag: Thank you
@hk1x1: Thank you, and thanks for running the comp, I’ll try to be up to it.
I couldn’t squeeze much time for the important things during the week (real life kept getting in the way); I only managed to do this:
Spoiler:
-
Rivets.
I’m guessing those will come in handy later on… And I’ll hold on to those punctured scraps too, they might work in some other piece; a well used firing range, maybe?
Did get to properly start the build today, though, the cannon and top piece are beginning to take shape:
I hope to get some more work done tomorrow, updates will follow to show progress (if any!)
@Camkierhi: Thank you.
@dsteingass: Thanks. If I’m not mistaken, it was you who first mentioned the possibilities of the dry wall mesh tape, so thank you for that, too.
Short update: Added some detail (Mostly, a rear vent on the gun cover), more than a few rivets (in due respect to the competition sponsor), and primed (not because it is actually finished, but I’ve found it helps bringing the different parts together and giving a better view of how the finished piece might actually look like when finished).
and little tower.... wow... looks awesome!...did you use a bottle of superglue for that gun? clever idea!... and that half sphere looks brilliant...
and since i am atm working on a grot plane... by all means... keep these punched scraps of plastic card... very useful... if you want... go have a look at my flyer gallery...there you´ll see i used these as a means of extra armorplating!!!
@dsteingass: Credit where credit is due, thanks a lot. So far I’ve used it only for plated flooring and an attempt at a wire fence, I’ll have to either think farther outside the box here or make a better use of the search tools in the forum…
@Viktor: Thanks for your comments. Actually, the barrel is (was) the handle piece of a broken balloon hand pump, formerly used to inflate twist balloons. I thought the shape might be useful sometime, and the comp’s theme reminded me to dig it up. The gun cover was part of a mini-dome security camera (Not the one I originally posted, though, that one ended up being too small), with minor add-ons.
I’ll save the punched scraps, possibilities for plating or embankments come to mind.
ah... a ballon pump.... now that is a truly nice idea!!! i will remember that for future ideas! scale always is hard to imagine when we look at these pics...
Fantastic work from everyone so far, and it's great to see the level of diversity that's on display from each individual entry.
If there's anyone who feels like their falling behind, or anyone else who thinks they'd like to enter this competition,
then don't panic, there's still plenty of time left, as were still in august, and this comp wont finish until the end of October .
@xXWeaponPrimeXx: I like the way this is starting to look, Its definitely very tyraind already .
@Littletower: Very nice work on the tower, and I love how if goes seamlessly with the gun dome, Excellent work so far .
@hk1x1: Thanks, really appreciated. I actually ran three try outs of different shapes/sizes for the tower before finally going for this one, I'm glad it turned out well enough.
Wooo big guns ! I'm down for this and I like all the progress I've seen so far! I'm definitely going for a nid themed big gun. Now, to brain storm a thousand ideas and see which ones stick...this is going to be fun
@ Tonio: I know most entrants are doing things for 40k, or something that they can use for their own army,
so I see no reason why you cant do a gun emplacement for another game.
hk1x1 wrote: What other game did you have in mind?
Mainly WM/H, as that's what I play the most. I'm looking at starting a theme board for my Trollbloods, so I could do a big defensive weapon for them. I'm still juggling with ideas, as some other games I play (Relics, Dystopian Legions) could also have cool, crazy concepts going with the contest theme.
@ Ruglud: I've been following your progress, And it is looking like an amazing piece, love the work you've done so far,
will deffinitly be keeping an eye on this one
@ Camkierhi: Well as you've noticed there's a lot of people building Ork projects, there are a few doing Imperial Guns, and 4 or 5 said they'd go for a Tyranid theme.
There might also be the odd Tau, Dark Eldar and Chaos entry as well, so that leaves Necrons, and Eldar.
But there's still plenty of oppotunity for some out of the box ideas, for instance I already mentioned The Tau, but what about the Kroot, or maybe even the Vespid.
And you have Imperial gun Emplacements, but who's are they, they could be Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, an experimental weapon from the Inquisition,
or some long lost technology held by the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Haven't even put pencil to paper yet on my idea...still floating nebulously around in my head. Still, coming up on about a month left and my dad duties have just ramped up with the start of soccer and cub-scouting season...Need to get it into gear.
I'm not going to officially pull out but I'm thinking this is going to be too big a project for me to fit in. Fingers crossed but I'm not that hopeful.
There are now only three weeks left till the end of September, That gives everyone about Eight more weeks before the end of this competition.
If everyone could try to get their entry's in by the 31st October that would be great, then I can start the Judging process.
If you haven't added any WIP pics here yet, please add one or two when you submit your finally piece,
as I want to see the work that went into it, and it will help me judge the entry.
I want to thank Meade once again for his brilliant scratch built Tech Priest, that is my prize for winning the last competition,
If you haven't seen it yet check out the posts above.
I'm still working on the prize for this competition, It will be a piece of Terrain, but very different for anything else you may have seen in the past,
My original plan was to make a gun emplacement, but I decide against that, and built something else instead.
As soon as it's finished I will reveal it here, hopefully before the end of the comp.
@ Littletower: That's looking great so far, nice work on the rust and weathered paint, Looks like it's been around for a while .
Oh hell, end of September?? I thought the deadline was end of October... I'm touch and go on whether I'll hit the later date, but little to no chance for end of September - mainly because I was too ambitious and decided to build BIG !!
I'll post some wip pictures tonight, if work allows me to get home in time. Currently in the trashbag-creation stage. As yet still not sure bout the gun I will be using, the garbage emplacement itself is in state of painting...
Ruglud wrote: Oh hell, end of September?? I thought the deadline was end of October... I'm touch and go on whether I'll hit the later date, but little to no chance for end of September - mainly because I was too ambitious and decided to build BIG !!
Your absolutely right Ruglud, I just checked my first post and I did say the end of October, .
My apologies for that, should of checked it first.
I've corrected my previous post, the competition will run till the end of October,
plus I've been following your project and am looking forward to seeing it finished.
I think I'm going to have to pull out: going to be getting major work on kitchen and Man-cave over coming month. sorry dudes, but if you need a hand judging boss, just lmk.
So, I only just found the thread/competition so I may not complete on time. But I decided I'd try my hand at it anyways! Here's what I've got going, Plastic from a Humidifier that broke, pill bottles, 1" pvc, glue, cardboard and a tub of leftover sheetrock joint compound. Never made anything like this before, but already excited and have way too many ideas!
@ Bobaram: I praise your enthusiasm mate, welcome aboard Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Just a quick reminder to everyone that there are now 4 weeks left to the end of the competition,
If anyone doesn't think they can finish on time, let me know, I'll happy to give an extra week to help you finish of your entry's if you need it.
hk, I may need the deadline extension, but I'll see how it goes over the next 4 weeks - still a lot of scratchbuilding to be done before I can even consider adding some colour :(
Work Continues, I'm trying to get at least 30 minutes a night in on it so I can make sure it's moving along at a good pace. Got the basic frame and foundation pieces in, time to start adding details to the little inside area as a command and firing room, and turing the outershell into a rock/steel/probably more rock than steel area!
Orico was supposedly beautiful once. But since he'd set foot on it , Corr had seen nothing but landscape spoiled by Tyranids, combat, and a lot of death. The rolling fields at the edge of Cardis, the capital city, had been pocked by artillery fire, spore mine explosions and countless dead. The battle in this region was nearly over, and the Chem-Dogs had come out of it surprisingly well. Of the two thousand Dogs that made planet fall, almost seventeen hundred were still upwardly mobile and only a few dozen had needed cleaning off the walls. Corr stood on a 'differently procured' PDF Salamander as it drove over the mounds of dead Tyranids. Chitin crunched under the treads and Corr smiled.
"No 'Nid like a dead 'Nid." he said as he fished a hand into his pocket for his lho sticks and put one between his lips. Mason held up his heavy flamer and Corr used the ignition flame to light his smoke.
"That sounds like something I would say, boss." Mason said. Corr smirked and exhaled a cloud of smoke at him.
"You're right. Maybe I should see Needles about that." he said. Mason waved a meaty hand at him and looked out at the blasted landscape.
"Boss, we got something up ahead." the driver called from the cab. Corr turned his attention forward and squinted in the morning sun.
"Is it the missing recon team?" he asked.
"I really doubt it." the driver responded. Corr was about to ask when he saw what he had meant.
"Mason, I'm glad you brought your flamer. We're gonna need it." Corr said. Mason stood and peered in the same direction Corr was.
Up ahead, stood three.... growths.
"The hell??" Mason muttered. Corr banged his hand hard on the Salamander.
"Stop the ride, Bash!" The Salamander skidded to a stop just a few meters from the growths. "Cut the engines!" Corr shouted. Bash complied and the Salamander engine cut out almost instantly. The growths were buzzing loudly as he opened the driver's hatch and poked his head out.
"Its a hive..." Corr muttered as he hopped down from the Salamander. Mason dropped down behind him and hefted his heavy flamer. They took a few slow steps forward and Corr pointed.
"Look." he said. Mason stopped. At the base of the hives was a body in the livery of the of the Oricon PDF, reduced to little more than bloody bones in a torn up uniform.
"That must be the recon team the colonel sent out earlier." Mason said as he scratched at the side of his nose.
"Part of it at least." Corr muttered. Corr took a step forward and the glistening tendrils that spread out from the bases of the hives twitched and pulsated, wrapping tighter around the corpse, and the noise of the hive grew louder. Corr stopped and his brow furrowed. The earth around them moved as the root system or... whatever it was, moved as the towers sensed a presence nearby. Shiny black beetles skittered from hidden pockets in the blue flesh of the hives and began to climb over its surface. Corr pulled his lho stick from his lips and flicked it at the towering growths.
"Bash. Put a call into PDF command, we need a Hellhound down here to take care of this. I doubt Mason would be able to get close enough to torch it himself."
"Sure thing, boss." Bash nodded and climbed back into the tank to make the call.
Corr strode back to the tank and climbed back up with Mason in tow.
"Where we goin'?" he asked.
"Back to camp." Corr responded. "We found the recon team. Nothing left for us to do here. Take us back, Bash." The Salamander engine roared into life and backed away from the hive growths.
@ Ruglud: You've got your work cut out for you when it comes to painting that monster, but take your time,
something this well made deserves a great paint job .
@ xXWeaponPrimeXx: That looks great, well done, plus I love the background story you wrote to go with it, nice work.
@ WeaponPrime. Brilliant, and great background story.
@ Littletower. Looking excellent. (and very rivety)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hi, (bet this autoupdates.)
Leaving this here, this is my official entry, complete. Please see my Orkishness blog if you want to see more about this. Spoilered most of it to save you guy's.
Spoiler:
As always please comment, leave your thoughts and I would very much appreciate *cough cough* votes.
Good luck to everyone, another great competition. Can't wait to see your work guy's.
Excellent work everyone, it's great to see finished entry's start to pour in
For those who haven't finished yet, I've extended the deadline a week into November, hopefully this will give you the time you need to finish your masterpieces.
@ Yggdrasil: well if you think you could get your entry finished in the next 2 weeks, your quite welcome to enter,
If not, then you can always enter the next one .
During the time this competition has been going, I've been running a little scratch building experiment of my own,
the results of which I will be giving away as the prize to the winner of this contest.
It's a model I've been curious about building for a while, and this competition has given me the opportunity to give it a go,
as every contest needs a prize at the end, plus I don't like making things that i'm not going to use, this way I'm sure someone will get more use out of it than I will.
I will be revealing the prize soon, I just have a few more details (rivets) to add.
Well, hey, thanks for the offer, but 2 weeks won't be enough... I already have a Shadowblade assassin due for November, 2nd for a painting comp at my local GW store...
I've got too many projects going! I need to hit up the bunker with the wall compound and build the control room, but I have to paint up an army for a tournament! AAARGH
Well those entries look amazing... and unless I am fired from work tomorrow I doubt I will be able to finish anything for this comp... sorry to say but I think I'm just going to sit back with my popcorn and watch the epic clash of Orky emplacement vs. Orky emplacement... versus tyranid horror... plus Littletower you are amazing man.
@ Meade: No worry's mate, but if your definitely not competing this time, then I might contact you behind closed doors,
and ask for your help with the judging, It will be good to get a second opinion on all the individual entry's, If your interested .

So here's what I've been working on for the last few months, this will be the prize for who ever wins the Competition.
The body and head of a Lucius Pattern Warhound Titan.
Although originally designed to be a piece of a terrain, you could probably do loads of different things with it,
and if your feeling particularly ambitious, you might even want to build some legs for it and finish it off
Of course you have to win it first, so good luck to all, and keep those entrants coming.
I am sadly unable to complete, I will be on the look out for the next competition though!
Automatically Appended Next Post: After I finish the Bunker gun, a friend and I are going to be building and Asteroid Field and Starfort. It would seem the terrain bug has infected us rather nastily!
@ Skalk Bloodaxe: I'm sorry to hear you wont be finished in time,
but would still love to see what it is you were working on, If you don't mind sharing it .

Your gun emplacement should be a model fixed into position, meaning it was either built at that location, or is too heavy or complex to move anywhere else. For example a basilisk Cannon *** built into a fortified bunker*** would be fine.
... a gun placed behind a few sandbags is more model than Terrain, however [b]a gun built into a reinforced bunker, that's been*** dug into a cliff face[*** is a much more interesting concept.
I had the right idea, but it turned into an utter and complete fail on my part:
I'll likely never finish it (though it is further along than this pic, it's just what I had available) and I've already considered re-purposing options so I do not waste the materials.
So yeah. Maybe next time.
Anyway, enough of my whining. Awesome entries from everyone! As always I'm impressed with the artistry and vision displayed on Dakka. I've been noticing that terrain builders are a small lot around here, but we're a dedicated and tight-knit group. My skills have advanced immeasurably since joining Dakka and I've been inspired by almost everyone. Seeing the work that people do during these LoER contests has never failed to impress. One of these days I'm going to actually do something. If anyone ever runs a 'build a lot of little piles of junk out of random bits' contest I will crush all that oppose me. Or at very least I'll enter and complete a project. Ha.
Looking forward to seeing what the end results of these massive efforts yields.
@ Theophony: I think it's great, very well done,
I like the black and yellow warning stripes, tells you to stand back or your gonna get your ears blown off .
Is there any chance of seeing a few more pics of it though, I just want to see it up close, and from different angles, thanks.

Ask and later you receive.
There are four different colored pipes coming off the weapon. In game I plan on having the four tubes be objectives. The colors will be written down hidden as to which two are critical and which two are secondary. If the attacker disables the right two the the system is taken out. That way this piece can be used to affect gameplay in an anti orbital game.
Also it was designed to also be used as a oil tank, but it keeps scratching the paint off the tank top when I do that.
Just remove turret and flip the lid.
@ MauS: Don't worry you've got some time left yet, and well done on your progress so far, loving the attention to detail,
all the papers, posters and rubbish everywhere really adds realism to this piece.
I'm looking forward to seeing the gun itself, and I'll give plenty of warning when this contest approaches its end.
Even though I have actually finished I for one vote for as much time as it takes for Bertha to be entered in all her glory. I honestly feel it's not a competition without at least a few more completed entries, especially Bertha, not that I am bias.
I Agree with Camkierhi, after all the work that has gone into it, it wouldn't be fair not to give Ruglud the chance to finish.
Plus there are also a few other contenders who are yet to finish there entrys,
so I'll be extending the deadline a little longer to give everyone a chance to finish.
After all, the more entry's we get the better a competition this will be .
I'm about to go out to get someprimer, so hopefully that gives you an idea of my immediate plans...
Asides from paint though, I still want to build;
a couple of cranes;
a shell loading system;
murder holes;
a crows nest;
targeter position;
some more shells;
ammo crates;
ladders;
and lastly - get Berfa on a working rotating base...
Primer was purchased, but constant rain and leaking roof (again) had delayed much happening - mainly worked on the base while waiting for the company who built our loft conversion to come take a look at the water damage... Good news on that front though is they are coming back Monday morning to sort everything out
what happened to the contest? it just died almost a month ago...
was excited to see the finished results of all the projects...was REALLY excited to see what the next competition would be, as i wanted to take a crack at another contest after Skalk Bloodaxe's...
but really, all i want is a shot at becoming a member of the League... guess i just have to wait.
It's all my fault hk1x1 was kind enough to give me some more time, but I've been an arse and not followed through by getting my entry completed...
As I said on my blog, if I don't get Berfa completed by next weekend then I will declare myself out and we can get on with the judging of the other entrants that held the deadline as sacrosanct and who are better human beings than me...
You could do a breast weapon, vs boobies, I would think the breast weapon would be much larger!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Dang sorry, I thought this was new... What I get for trying to read Dakka while under a workload... eeep here comes the boss!!
Hello all, my apologies for the silence that has fallen over this thread recently (subtle Doctor who reference intended ).
As Ruglud said above the new Deadline for the Competition will be next weekend, so the last day to submit entry's will be Sunday the 15th December.
The judging hopefully wont take more than a few days, and then I'll announce the winner.
Well done to everyone who's entered, judging this will not be an easy task .
Just had this thread pointed out to me by Skalk - some awesome models and a great-sounding comp! Subbed so that I can enjoy more pics and, when the next comp is announced, maybe sign up and have a go myself…
Welcome to the end of the 7th League Terrain Competition "Fire at will"
The competition is now Closed, the task of judging all the final entry's will start soon, and I hope to announce the winner before the end of the week.
A big thank you to everyone who took the time to build Terrain pieces for this Competition.
We've seen a brilliant array of different entry's, being built across the span of this contest,
all of which unique in their design and style of construction.
Here are the final entrants, and their entry's (pics appear in same order as names).
Camkierhi
Littletower
Theophony
xXWeaponprimeXx
Hive Fleet Lazarus
If I've missed anyone from the list, please Contact me ASAP, thank you.
Firstly, I must offer my apologies to hk1x1 for stringing the deadline extension out - regretably som RL issues reared their ugly head this week and meant that my hobby time was blown out of the water, I will not bore you with the details, suffice to say that Berfa has had to be shelved for now, but she will get finished when I'm able to refocus.
Secondly, what a group of finalists. All great in their own rights and a real headache now for hk1x1 to judge - I wouldn't want to be in his shoes (and I've judged several comps now on Dakka so know what a task it is...)
Awesome display and great variety of builds, tough competition in there.
Thanks again hk1x1 for running.
And Ruglug, really sorry to hear that, hope it's nothing too serious, and will be waiting for your comeback and to see Big Berfa properly finished once you fell up to it again!
Wow. Excellent work one and all. I really enjoy how each person interpreted the subject and how the results came out. I wish I had worked on my entry more, it would have been cool to compete in field like this.
Good luck to everyone... especially YOU, hk1x1... good luck judging this one. ha.
With the help of Viktor von Dom, and OneManNoodles, (a big thank you to both of them for their help)
We have reached a decision on our favorite entry for this Competition.
Everyone that entered has done an amazing job on their entrys, and the judges where impressed by all of them,
But one stood out to all of us, due to its attention to detail and the overall diorama that this piece presented.
So congratulations to Camkierhi, the Winner of the 7th League Terrain Competition.
And once more well done to you all, we hope to see you again in the next Competition .
Thank you so much, I really think we where lucky some did not finish, or it would be a different result. Excellent entries by all and i am honoured to have won.
If you need help with judging the next round just let me know - I'm a bit burnt out on everything still so not likely to be building much and hence why I haven't checked in recently (been lurking though when I can).
As Cam mentioned above, details of the next Terrain competition have now been posted,
If you enjoy building terrain, scenery or even diorama's, then head over to Camkierhi's competition page (link below)
All the rules and contest detail's are there.
