Hello all, london1662 (Alan, AL) here, i would like to show you guy's some of the projects i've been working on over the last year or so? I've only been back in the hobby in the last year and half, i took a big break from it all!..............like you do! my main interest has always been Post Apocalyptic/Death Race style vehicles with some Zombies thrown in for good measure.........so lets crack on.....
first up are some WIP of a PA Ford Mustang 1/16th scale ex RC car

and now painted!...............very rusty!

cheers
AL

'WARNING'
the BIG one is coming next!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Now it's time for one of my favorite builds, mainly because it all came together at the end!, after a lot of changes all very time consuming i got to a point were i thought it would not get finished, size wise it's nearly 5 feet long! 1/14th scale again another ex RC model..........
it's based on the truck from Death race 'The Dreadnought' i call this one the 'war wagon' the turret is 1/16th M1 ABRAMS in the movie they built a scaled down M1 turret i went for the full size version.....
the first pic you can see the size? next to me!

fantastic stuff, very Carmageddon. Maybe make an Eagle? (http://www.carmageddon.com/blog/nobby%E2%80%99s-concept-album-v-eagle-eyes)

I love the cars that are festooned with spikes, are those plastruct girders? I was planning something similar one day.

My only criticism would be that I think you could vary the colours slightly on each model. I love the palettes and the rust effects but a few mis-matched panels or variations in rust would go a long way. Or maybe some chipped off markings.

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2013/10/13 12:11:39

Post by: london1662

Bruticus cheers mate for your comments, i will be taking them all on board believe me as i said i'm only getting back into the modelling hobby in the last year or so and i'm learning all the time!
all the plastic sheet/tubes etc are EVERGREEN i find there a lot cheaper then PLASTRUCT ...............but i will be using Plastruct diamond plate soon as evergreen don't do that yet.

You would fit right in with orky conversions

Post by: london1662

cheers AntomanElven, i've got a whole bunch of ideas for Ork conversions!................just got to get used to working back in 28mm!....................it's so small! lol

AL

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2013/10/15 05:25:09

Post by: AntomanElven

Yeah that's why I dislike 28mm. 54mm or whatever inquisitor scale was would be good for a medium sized warhammer game. Easier to paint as well

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2013/10/15 19:23:52

Post by: london1662

54mm is a good 'old' school scale! sorry! i originally started wargaming and modelling back in the mid 70's! 25mm for wargaming! 54mm for figure modelling, oh! those where the days lol
i'm thinking of doing a few minis in 54mm (maybe not so mini?) i think you could do a good 'jugger' team (film salute of the jugger) and some post apocalyptic figures?

RAMSHACKLE GAMES 'RHEBOK APC'

to put it simply! i love this model! this is without doubt one of the best Curtis as done, i will be building a lot more.............once the store is back open! .................now please knock up a main battle tank to go with the iron brothers please Curtis.........
now to the painting this is the first time I've tried OSL.............object source lighting? ...........so what do you think? did it work? has this was my first attempt I've been a bit conservative with the yellow! i was 'crap'ing my self doing this! i had visions of ending up with a 'off pink-red monstrous mess!' that would have worked for a 'Hello Kitty' build!
i thinks i'll go back and touch up the yellow ............actually i'm more pleased with the blue lamp! with a tiny little spot of white in the corner! but now i know i can control the airbrush i'm a lot more confident........

cheers

Some great stuff here

The tow truck looks better now in yellow, good to see some more colour work coming into play as you get back into it.

Do any of the R/C vehicles still work , or have they all been stripped of electrics as part of the build?

These are totally amazing now if you can do these in 1/56th scale and send them to me I would be most grateful

You need to a stage by stage tut on your painting technique especially that bigfoot look

lone dirty dog, i must get round to doing a tut or two! but when i get going on a model i'm a bit manic! but i will learn to slow down!........maybe! the reason i asked wazzoo for a tut is i'm a tutorial nut! i love to see how other people do their stuff has i say you can always teach a old dog new tricks me being the old dog!

Never to old to learn mate and I have seen plenty to learn from here I love the way you emanate texture without it actually being there, the realism you achieve is just stunning.

So stop speeding through your projects and make a tut

the yellow grit on the taxi, is Vallejo desert sand, i use it a lot now it's cheaper then green stuff! the brown earth is slightly more gritty good for mud on chassis's etc

Post by: Malika2

Two things:

1) I really love how you've done the rust/metal on your vehicles. Would you mind posting a tutorial for it?

2) Will you be adding some more Ramshackle stuff? I really LOVE what you've done with that tank.

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/08/11 16:51:56

Post by: london1662

cheers Malika2 and there will be more Ramshackle stuff coming alone mate,

so i thought i'll throw this first of a couple of tuts up it's basic but that's me! i like to keep things simple......
first thing i use a AIRBRUSH....but there's no reason why you can't brush on the same for all the stages just make sure you 'stipple' the red and orange on
for all models that i'm going to want lots of RUST chipping/scratch's i start with this base rust combination
1. prime black
2 GW's .RHINOX HIDE base coat, this is your dark rust colour.
3.GW's EVIL SUNZ SCARLET sprayed or stippled on in a 'random' pattern go very light with this don't cover the whole model or you just end up with a red model!
4.GW's TROLL SLAYER ORANGE as above but put it mostly on top of the red, the red will show through making a nice lighter rust colour............

next i will seal it with a matt varnish ready for the 'Hair spray' and top coat........(the colour/colours you want the model) and the chipping.

and that's it! it's that simple!.............'honest guv'!

and a few pics ........."speak a thousand words"

hope this helps
cheers

Loving this thread, great stuff! It is really inspiring to see how simple you make the whole process appear to be!

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/08/12 16:12:07

Post by: london1662

cheers legoburner for your comments mate, glad your loving the thread, i try to keep all steps as simple has i can when i build and paint mainly for me!!

it's the start of the 'chipping!' for this one i'm using HUMBROL's MASKOL which is basically a thin rubber type mask, i apply it using a ripped up scotch pad or you can use sponge brush etc............in fact you can use about any thing you like really! after its dry about 20 minutes i paint on the top colour i want in this case simple black...its a blackcab after all! let the paint dry to the touch then rub it off
i use WHITE TACK to gently rub it off, i find white tack seems less grease'e then blue tack it just seems to pick the maskol up.......magic!........and the odd finger helps.
i like this stuff a lot! because i can put it exactly where i want it, on this model i want 'big!' chips..............................hmmmmmmm! chips!.......sorry i went off there! lol .........again some pics that do better then my words.............

in this one we see how the base rust colours really make a difference in places

'BIG' chips!

so thats the basic chip and rust base.............and don't forget you can repeat this as many times as you like with different colours.

cheers
AL

cheers guy's for your kind comments, i'm glad your liking the builds.................i do!
lone dirty dog.....I've got talent!............lol cheers mate that is high praise indeed thank you..........................PIGMENTS!..............i love pigments, they really give that 'gritty' effect that i'm after! i couldn't do a clean model! lol plus layers? what i mean by that is i have no problem putting on multi layers and then sanding some back to give the effect of years of different paint jobs and mud/dust/dirt build up over the years on the model at the end of the day these vehicles are working in worlds that have been devastated by some type of 'end of world' event i try to use a lot of techniques from the Scale military modeling community those guys know how to make vehicles look 'real' one of the main things i use, or don't use! lol ....very little in fact almost none? dry brushing i feel it doesn't give the effect i'm after, at the end it's down to how you want the model to look.....................for me 'DIRTY'!...............

WIP Post Apocalyptic Chieftain MBT

Hello Wastelanders, couple of wip pics of the Chieftain, added a lot of texture to turret and hull to really help bring out the rust and chipping that's coming, the crew have added their own bins and side 'skirts', lots of damage done........of course! i don't 'DO' clean
for those that don't know the barrel as two terminal sleeves either side of the fume extractor, that's the 'round thing' 2/3 thirds along the barrel, over the years this crew have made there own!............old sheets and rope! (I've used rope, in real life to secure a terminal sleeve! it works!)............
still to add 'tarps' and stowage and securing brackets for side skirts........but it's coming along nicely....

I wonder how much of a tank a tank in a post apocalyptic world would be. I mean, it's not like they can reproduce ammunition and such. Wouldn't it eventually be a clunky armoured vehicle that can't do that much besides riding around? Taken from that point, I'd imagine people maybe even squatting such a vehicle, just building stuff on top of it or adding tons of spikes to them so it'll become some sort of ramming thing.

Food for thought.

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/08/29 19:24:44

that's a very good point Malika2.........a very good point.....i'm looking at this, that the 'occupants' are/maybe ex crew and there's a bit of ammo left.......maybe.......hang on!! YOU! HAVE GIVEN ME SOME NEW IDEAS!.......cheers mate

Definitely more fitting to the theme now I did check in earlier but thought you were just still building but the new update really brings that back to AP standards.

Have you considered some kind of makeshift guard around the front hatch section kind of looks a little clean lined still.

Will you be sticking with the military colour scheme or going all out with some kind of makeover

Well once the tears have dried and the memories drift away it will be cool to see what this scheme is you have in mind

Yes I saw you had cut down the barrel I did wonder what the thought process was behind that but makes sense now, hey if it has no ammo you could have just added a wedge of metal to the barrel and used it as a battering ram open buildings easily.

As for the front hatch remember its the "rule of cool"

Ouch! That sucks, and I completely understand your lack of desire to continue for a few days. Droppage and works-in-progress are rarely a good mix.

However, good to hear you're back to it, and as has already been said, it's not an accident, it's a carefully designed wrecking of the tank in order to rebuild it in a life-like manner

Post Apocalyptic Chieftain Tank

Hello all, well it's now in a state were i can drop a few pics, this is stage 1, stage 2 will be a simple wasteland desert base, stage 3 i'll add the 'girls'.....
a few pointers, the sights have be painted over the girls don't need'em they like to paint over everything! they just point and flame! this is set in a wasteland that's in permanent sun shine a bit like the post apoc film 'Hell' so no need for lights............(there still in the kitchen some where, that's where i dropped it!)...............no tow cables? it's probably the only working Chieftain about, so whose going to tow it! a bit more stowage will be added later but not much, all they need is in the turret, fuel?.........who knows? it's Post Apoc they get what they need!... i'm just waiting for some really nice MENG MODELS clear water bottles to arrive in post then they can be added, so for now enjoy guy's.

ONCE AGAIN AN AMAZING WORK !!!!!!1!

I just relish your approach to weathering it some how seems so realistic I love the homemade flamers what a cool idea count that as stolen

The chains are a great idea you can just see theses smashing the mutants and zombies as it drives through the horde.

Please tell me the Micky is a stencil I have to be honest I am not sure if I like or don't like the cheques the corrugated sheeting has turned out perfectly

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/10/19 16:06:31

Post by: london1662

cheers Dirty Dog,
the weathering is simply the 'HEAVY' use of dry pigments...........;WARNING' when using dry pigments they get every where!............keep'em confined to a box or area when your working with'em they love cloths! carpets! floors!........and more!
the tires have a simple wash of tap water and pigment, then when dry, rub off the excess leaving the pigment in the recess, the Flamers are the innerd's of pens.................I've completely forgotten what you call'em!...........you know the bit with the ink................what are they called now?
the chains are LEGO chains i love'em so cheap and a great size, i will use a lot more, the cheques i think help to break up the Red? i happy with'em plus it's all good airbrush training! and yes the 'Micky' is a stencil more airbrush, i can imagine there was a big Disney advert there before it all went to pot! the corrugated cardboard worked out very well.... just be careful to seal it with plenty of paint first before using any washes mixed with water. it's paper at the end of the day!.............it rots!

a few more pics

lots of use of AK Interactive's Engine oil, a lot of the rust was done using GW's Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust, really good combo those two will be using them a lot more, produces a very quick rust effect, all metal work done with a graphite pencil and powder, gives a really 'real feel' to the metal....

I thought I had replied to these pics never mind here goes AWESOME!!!! love the use of weather powders the walkways and stairs look great the buildup of dirt and dust is so realistic

I also thought the wire meshing al ragged and twisted was well done sometimes it looks to neat yours looks used bashed and pulled at I will be using that approach on my Apoc cars.

Talking of which I have spent nearly 2 weeks looking for a 1/48 ish scaled double decker bus with no prevail as I was so inspired by yours I thought I must have one but can I find one in that scale not for love or money

i'm gonna have to take a step back and think hard on this, mainly because the main bits i want to trim are very integral to the structure of the whole frame.......hmmmm :coffee:

yes! that's the tyres!

Totally missed that giant SnapTite logo in the corner of the box.

Yeah, snap kits can be a pain for those who like to chop their kits into tiny pieces and re-assemble them in a different order. The cab being all one piece is a real bummer. Although in some ways it makes it more interesting to see what you can come up with.....

Well hard to tell with your work till the paint hits, you have taken off more than I thought you would have done with the trailer but still looking forward to how it turns out.

Have you considered heating the cab to add some dents to it, I just imagine it does a lot of running down mutants and zombies alike.

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/11/15 16:24:42

Post by: london1662

Dog.......yep.... had to do more to the trailer then expected due to the thick........insert..... 'very' thick plastic! a right pain to work with, the more i tried to work with it the worst it looked! in the end rip it off use good old cardboard!

the up-rights will get x-bars to act as hand rails for the gun crews.

the cab.......................... heating? i don't know? if i screw it up, (what with this plastic) i could lose the whole cab? plus there's not much left as it is.

the engine is a spare from the bus kit............and really gives it a over-sized engine look, which i like.

cheers

AL

Gun crews?...........just writing that has given me a new idea weapon wise?..............maybe its time for a............. ...........cannon!.................or two!................cheers Dog, you've done it again!

Post by: Littletower

Sorry to hear the easy-snap-on is proving harder to work with than you expected (I guess the designers did not have you particular take on the build in mind when this was on the drawing board!

It'll surely look great once you are done with it!

As for the heating issue, I guess it was meant some localized heat more than the whole cab: bringing a soldering iron tip or a blow torch (there are both crafts and bakery models for sure, maybe more too), or just getting a pre-heated metal bit close and/or touching it - depending on the desired effect, some try-outs on spare plastic might be advisable - could do for great effects.

You could do that to the wheels as well - pressing the ground-side against a flat hot metal surface - to deform/flatten them and simulate the vehicles weight, for example... (works if they are solid, watch out with hollow pieces though!)

Anyway, will be following!

London's 'wacky workshop' @ 2014/11/15 21:21:04

Post by: lone dirty dog

Littletower has hit the nail right on the head as to heating the plastic, I used a soldering iron close but dot touch the plastic directly then with a piece of wood or metal ( metal ruler is good ) gently dent the plastic.

You could try it on the off cut trailer sections before hitting the cab directly, also I have seen many Military modellers use thick foil or copper sheeting to replace a section as it dents quite easily with realistic effects.

Just a thought mind large cannon you say what kind of explosive will it be using ????????

@Littletower thanks for the ideas mate, i do need to buy a couple of new things and a soldering iron (model making type) is one and a hot glue gun!..anyone use one?

Hot glue guns, I have two: 15 and 40 watts. Main difference is how long you can use it continuously before it cools down and stops melting the glue. Barring a massive terrain project, the small one should do fine, IMHO (There's usually also a difference in the glue stick's length and diameter, the ones for the lesser powered gun being - can you guess? - the smaller ones. I'd check for any differences in availability too, just in case, as not to get stranded with an un-reloadable glue gun.

I've also found noticeable differences in the glue´s transparency - in case that is issue - between brands, some dry almost crystal clear, others a fuzzy white.

As for the soldering iron, I'd go for an electronics/general purpose one over a modelling tool - those that have "modelling" in their names tend to be more pricy, just because most of the time - pencil style, low/medium power (Up to 30/40 watts), with interchangeable tips: you can either get some with different shapes and double it up as a heat-driven engraving tool, or just file/dremel some tips to your own ends (instantaneous embossed riveting comes to mind, among others). A stand or holder for those is a must too, to keep it safely propped while hot.

Edit: Found the link to the recessed heat-engraved rivets, in Camkierhi's Thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/870/486262.page#6843861

Hi guy's, a couple of WIP pics just got the base coat on, a new colour i'm using, Vallejo model color Flat Brown, makes a excellent rust base.......... now my favorite colour..........

I've got a couple of box's of fuel drums, jerry cans and stowage in the post, which i will add, you can see my new weapons..............cannons! on the trailer, added to the flamers that will be going on..................and were ready to go scavenging!........

cheers

You know you can really be so annoying at times just an undercoat and it looks much better than my models I swear you could add a few simple touches of colour and scrapes and it would look totally awesome which it aint far off now.

Plus this was a rather toy looking model kit now it actually looks like a proper kit it just amazes me I was not sure if pulling the trailer apart was a good idea now with all the little details it is so right for this

Flat brown would look .........well brown if I used it

Yeah man, wow, that thing looks great with those rust gradients.

cheers @Meph..........when it comes to Post Apoc.............RUST.................RUST..............and more RUST!..............

@Dog cheers mate............i first primed black then hit it with the flat brown leaving a lot of black in the shadows, being a Vallejo model colour i had to thin it about 60% paint 40% thinner, that helped to keep the layers thin and transparent, basically your using the black to darken the thinned brown in places and giving various rust tones, then hitting the center of the panels with a few more layers to build up the brown again, it's a quick 'modulation' technique.

whats so simple, it's just one colour (flat brown) and the black primer doing the work.

the trailer has really come on well, i had my moments when i thought ..............hmmmmm.. this ain't working?...... a model really comes together when you get that first paint on, when you work in so many different materials you can start to lose the picture!.....................and the plot!.....

i like the colour, i might do very little to the cab?..............

cheers

Thanks for the break down will have to give it a go although how well it will work with smaller sized vehicles and my painting skills we will see, I know what you mean about all the different elements coming together with a simple coat of paint.

It can become rather disorienting when building and converting things especially if you use several kinds of plastic cards and materials, mind you have done a decent job once again and love the cannons I zoomed in and like the self made carriages/stands.

Now I had an idea as I was looking at the cab I too thought leave it pretty much as badass as it is but maybe if you can pull it off ( challenge ) on the cab door do the remains of a very faded/scratched motif and some paint the last reminisce of mankind so to speak

Hi guy's been working on this over the last few weeks really happy how it's turned out, it started out has the 1/16th Scale 'Dukes of Hazzard' Dodge Charger, a lot of work cutting away bits plus it's a 'Dog' of a KIT!..... lucky i got the chance to cut it up!

lot of AK and MIG Pigments, AK Interactive's washes and streaking grimes, AK Interactive Heavy chipping fluid, i'm not happy with these washes anymore, they've gone in the bin! will start using Oil paints from now on... plus trying out 'FLORY MODELS' clay based washes.

i'm going to post up my new builds as individual threads for a while.

enjoy...........

by the way the rod sticking up is the gear stick! and the starter button is under the drivers seat that way no one will find it easy to steal the 'Nomads' ride!

cheers lone dirty dog kind words indeed my friend....

if they where wargame mini's etc then maybe they'll be more feed back?... or they simply don't get me!....LOL

i know i don't update every day or so but that's the nature of the beast! I've got to build and paint them....first!....and some of the kits are the price of a small army!...but a...what do i know?

Cleatus cheers mate you can find me on the "post apoc wargames forum"........if you get the chance to check it out you will find loads of great stuff on there mate....
