Hey there, this will be a place where I post progress on conversions and painting for my ever growing Iron Warriors 13th grand company.
I would appreciate C&C on anything so I can improve my hobby related skills.
As it stands now I have well over 10000 points, half of it painted and i have no intentions on slowing down.
I will work on getting a group shot of the painted portion of the force, but for now here are some pic of my new raptor squad.
This is the first time I've attempted a blog, so if any one can give me advice on the most streamlined way of posting images it would be much appreciated. Posting them through the gallery seems to far more time consuming to upload than say a site like imgur.
In fact any advice or tips about the best way to post things would be appreciated.

Iron Warriors Lieutenant Dristoro, the leader of my Inquisimunda killteam.
Tried my hand at some weathering using Vallejo pigments, probably could have done with a lighter shade of grey as it seems to blend into the silver of the armour a bit much for my liking.

Iron Warriors like they're supposed to be. Brutal, menacing, killing Banana Marines
Very well done! Looking forward to the group shot.

Raptors are coming along, just have to choose weather to equip the champ with a lightning claw and combi-melta or a power weapon and plasma pistol.
Went back and stripped the paint off the dozer of the first vindicator I painted and re-painted it to match the other vindy.
I generally run 3 vindicators in my lists so will be getting another to fit in with the line breaker formation better than my puppets war big momma vindy.
The puppets war one is also getting stripped with plans to turn it into a possessed one with bits from the corpse cart kit.
Here's a pimped out rhino I've been working on for my chosen. Probably the most expensive first blood machine out there, cost around $145nzd to put together. It's a labour of love really.
Kind of feel it need something on the sides to break the silver/gold theme, thinking maybe adding another metallic colour like balthasar gold to the exhausts and other bits.

Just a quick WIP of the raptors. Feel like I went too dark on the wash, but still have to do highlights and what not so it can still be fixed.
Also Finally got round to finishing my unnamed Warsmith/Counts as Abbadon conversion.
Time to paint.

Heres the Warsmith as he stands today.
Going to try out the new Nihlakh Oxide technical on the demonic face and gargoyle on his hammer.
Should be fun.
Also got the corpse cart bits stripped an onto the dozer blade of my demonically possesed Vindicator.

Really nice work. Love the Raptor poses! I think the Imperial Fists would look nice with lots of weathering to represent a long lasting war, would dull them down a bit so as not to detract from that lovely visceral gore that you have perfectly achieved!
I have never liked Chaos. I think I have changed my mind now, keep up the great work!

I normally don't go for the blood and gore, but man did you do it right. I've bookmarked it for future reference, it's given me great inspiration for those Night Lords I've been puttering around with for years.

Yeah I think that was the issue, much happier with it now.
The eyes weren't done in that pic, sort of happy with them now, but took a few tries to get it right.
Heres how he looks now, still not done so C&C is appreciated.
This was what I was going for with the hammer.

The skull on Lieutenant Dristoro is hand sculpted.
The one on the Warsmith's chest is a push mold from the old metal Warsmith's chest.
The one on the Predator is a push mold from the forgeworld IW rhino doors.
Made an Iron Warriors top hatch for my rhinos out of plasticard, which I'll cast a bunch of to retro fit all my Rhinos.
Designed so it can be hinged and still open up without jamming.
And lastly added some generic "chaos trim" and symbols (from the hellblade kit) to the Relic Pred to give it more of a traitor vibe without making it look like a porcupine.

I'm sure we can come to some sort of deal. Just gotta get the hang of casting first.
On that note heres one of the first decent casts of the rhino doors, had a few bubbles but nothing as bad as my first attempts.
The trim is from the awesome templates that Subtle Discord has done over on B&C found here.
Update on the raptors. Just need to get some space marine transfers and bloody them up to finish them.
Relic Predator WIP. Tried a chipping medium, but am not happy with the results, made the black look crap, epcially on the front.

Cheers, the metal gunners been a wip for a while, reckon the imperail guy needs some gore on his back where he's being held.
Look what just arrived on my desk.
Is this normal for the chain weapon arm?
I've never had forge world bits on this type of sprue, only finecast.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The new home of my shamed raptor champion.
Wanted to try create a dread with a siege hammer like in the start of Storm of Iron, I reckon he looks Iron Warriors as feth.
The main body of the hammer is mostly plasticard with a chaos knights mace as the end.
The arm is a magma cutter from the mauler fiend kit.
Body is the Iron Warriors dread from forge world, the radical reaper auto cannon is forge world also.

Post by: ratking
Since I had a few people ask how I did the gore on my raptors I took some pictures while doing a small patch on my melta gunner in order to show you how i do it.
Firstly I dab a bit of super glue on the origin of the gore then add a blob of greenstuff on top.
The super glue just keeps it there so the next step is easier.
This is the tool I use. As you can see it's very similar to a dentists pick but anything with a point will do, a tooth pick or sewing needle.
Then you just start tearing bits of green stuff off of the blob. It's fine to actually remove some green stuff here, it should be forming "ribbons" now.
Thats pretty much it, just manipulate the ribbon to dry in the direction you want the gor flying/falling and you're done.
Now just paint it red and slather tamiya clear red over it all.

Thanks a lot for the feed back. It's a major theme I try to convey with my IW's is that first and foremost they are siege specialists and certainly no strangers to putting steel to stone.
Got The steel colours done and the foundations for golds and chevrons down on my dreadnought.

They are the Anvil Industries black ops, with head gun, and sholder guard swaps. You get some seriously awesome bits in the set, and the casting quality is some of the best I have seen.
As far as hammers go, Huron's is from the FW cat terms, the havoc's one is from the baneblade kit and the two handed champions one is from a blood angels kit I think. Any others you were wondering about?
Here's a sneak peek at my latest piece of dreadnought madness.

Heh not intentional but totally makes sense as that armless raptor is the previous champion of my raptors, and he most certainly is not strong enough.
Yeah definitely gonna put some drum mags on the butcher cannon, I was going to use the imperial guard autocannon ones but the just seem kinda whimpy for such a large gun, may have to scratch build something.

Just re-watched "Beast of War" to keep my treaded hype going (if you havn't seen it, its one of the best tank movies out there, following a lost soviet tank crew in Afghanistan) also reading Gunheads, which is pretty good for imperial filth.
Started painting up the chimera. Started with flames of war Italian armour as a primer, then washed that with a diluted athonian camoshade, then zandri dust, karak stone and ushabti bone.
Kept the chevrons to tie them in to my iron warriors. Am having a bit of trouble painting the chains though, why did i add so many....
This is one of the first vehicles I've painted that hasn't been plain IW scheme so I'm quite pleased with how its coming along.
Also My leman russes came. one of the benefits of GWs slowed pricing structures in NZ is its cheaper to get a FW leman shipped from forge world then it is to get one in store here, plus I can make another russ from the spare bits if i just get some tracks.
Just wondering what to do with the side of the command vanquisher as I'm not equipping it with sponsons, thinking of crucifying some imperials and hooking them up to a dirge castor/vox system.

RobZie wrote:Lookin good mate, the heavy bolter to auto-cannon conversions are wicked, never thought that would look so good.

Thanks, though the 1st autocannon in that bunch is the sentinel autocannon. It works really well size wise and required little converting with just a normal bolter holding arm and the heavy bolter arm to secure it.
Finally got round to painting my defense line after grinding out the aquilas with a dremel and covering the grinding marks with plasticard strips.
I got lucky and it so happens that the chevron transfers from the CSM transfer sheets fit perfectly over them speeding things up greatly.
The bigger chevrons are from the Imp guard sheets with a printed IW skull PVA'd over top with another layer of PVA painted over that.
still got to find one more IG transfer and cut out some more skulls, then dry brush some golden griffon on the gold parts and add some sponged on paint chips to the chevrons to finish them.

RobZie wrote:More awesomeness. Love the ADL, really fits in with your army. Is that banner a freehand job?
I cheated wee bit on the banner so its not totally free hand. I'm pretty rubbish at free hand so cut out a printed IW skull and glued it on then painted over that to get the out line right, the numbers are secret weapon brass etch also glued on (so tiny and fiddly).
The details on the skull and Chaos start are free handish with the help of some taymia masking tape to get straight lines.
Heres the finished product of the bearer and standard section of the ADL.

This lascannon legionary killed it last game taking out a devil dog for 1st blood and a chimeria full with a particularly nasty iron hand staken HQ opening them up to be obliterated by artillery fire.
In light of his glory, he get the honor of having a repaint, new head and accessories, as well as some more efficient cabling for his lascannon (the open port on the back of the IW lascannon shoulder guard always bugged me.).

Thanks for your interest and good luck with your campaign.
However I may use a lot of heresy era models and bits, but only because the Warsmith of the 13th grand company runs a tight ship, relatively free from warp mutated shenanigans.
This army is a 40k army so i'd feel it would be a bit misleading slapping 30k in the title.
Very nice Iron Hands by the way.

Starting on a new Vindicator kit I got for cheap.
I've always thought the idea of having a spare shell dangling off the back behind the rear armour as the stupidest thing ever so I made an internal ammo rack for the demolisher shells on this one out of some plasticard tubing.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Finnally got round to adding rivets to the contemptor.
I've also been playing round with using the drum mags from the helblades auto cannons.
They are just blue tacked on at the moment but I am pretty happy with how they look, what do people think?
Started making little icons for the rear and side doors of the vindicator. I will probably make a push mold of this when its done to use on other vehicles.

Finsished most of the painting on the vindicator with just some touch ups on the battle dammage and some weathering to go.

First update in what seems like ages.
Finally decided to finish my contemptor dread and start painting him to lead a mayhem pack or just run as a very expensive chaos contemptor.
Decided after I had done the lead beltcher base coat and first ironbreaker dry brush to try photo it in each stage of painting.
My process for all my iron warriors iron colours is as follows, Base coat lead belcher, dry brush ironbreaker, wash with thinned nuln oil then do progressivly ligher dry brushes of ironbreaker, runefang and necron compound. The difference is pretty hard to notice in the photos but really takes the finished model to the next level.
Apologies for the cell phone pics, left my camera at work.
If you want to see more of my Iron Warriors leave a comment cause I can't really be bothered updating frequently if it just sinks to the back pages without any views.
Nuln oil
Ironbreaker Drybrush
Runefang Drybrush
Necron Compound
krack grenade denied.

HOLY CRAP! Thats some seriously impressive work there. And this: This makes an old iron warrior's eyes get misty. My only question. How are you going to transport these without half your army breaking in transit? It seems painfully fragile.

I know what you mean, but I'm running out of interesting heads that don't have stupid tusks or horns.
Just imagine he took a shot to the face and had to remove it.

Unfortunately the earth shaker carriage is on hold with most of the rest of my traitor guard now that they are come the apocalypse allies.
Hopefully the rumours of some forgeworld love for chaos mean I can use my massed artillery again.
As for transport, all imperial fist mutilation models are pinned with wire so they are surprisingly durable.
I play most of my games with my flatmate or friends in my garage so transport isn't normally a problem. When i do go down to the local club ( which is conveniently a few blocks away) I do it very carefully.

After a bit of break I'm returning to my Iron Warriors with a renewed passion.
I've recently finished 25 militia in their new olive drabish scheme, 5 iron warriors boarding marines (going to use them as plague marines.) and a new warpsmith with burning brand.
I've also gone overboard ordering from forgeworld, with 2 rapier laser destroyer batteries, 15 mkIII marines, IW contemptor to turn into a destroyer of cities dread, many iron warriors upgrade parts and even a warlord titan.
Started setting up a new light box,but have lost my camera so only phone photos for now.
As usual let me know what you think, more feedback motivates to put up morepictures and WIPS.

Oh yeah I sure did, wish it was a warlord though.
As for parts, here goes, the torso, head, legs and arms are from the mkIII iron hands squad, mkIII shoulder pads, axe from dark vengeance, flamer pack from the sternguard kit with chaosy exaust ports added on, flamer is from a techmarine with green stuff tubing, servo arm is from a techpriest and the melta is from the Iron Warriors upgrade pack.
I think thats most of the parts, if there was something I missed let me know.

I'm loving the Earthworks, great idea for IW of course. Where did you get the sandbags? I'm curious because I recently saw a bunch of Tamiya ones at Hobby Lobby.

Hey there....
Lovely looking earthworks! Definitely one for the IW! great start!
Going back also... some lovely models but that heavy artillery piece is glorious! One for the "Stor-Bezashk" to be proud of!

They are the tamiya 1/35 sandbag kit, too about 2 boxes to do this trench.

Cheers, I just finished modelling that and added chains holding it down to the decking. I was inspired by the daemonic guns in storm of iron.

I appreciate the feed back. I've got far more stuff on my work bench that could be considered sane so there should be a bit of action here in the near future.

Wow! Just found your thread, and exalted it so I can follow along! Awesome army coming together, and I really appreciate the great pics and stage-by-stage painting of that Dreadnought. I have just begun painting some Iron Warriors with (for?) my son and I am really a fan of how you keep the basic metal clean, without too much hazard striping, but how you also incorporate that and other (gold) metallic colors.
Your bases are also awesome--I am a big fan of creating bricks to create some geometric lines on bases, and I like the effect of the mini wall you have on that Dreadnought. I haven't done that, but I will definitely try it, thanks to you.
So, fantastic stuff, and I look forward to seeing how the projects continue.

Ha ha true, I have hammers for most of my champs with mauls and I wanted to use the mace from dark vengeance as it looks pretty demonic.

Cheers, i've actually cut down how I do the base steel colour on infantry models to save time.
Base-leadbeltcher
drybrush- ironbreaker
wash- 50% thinned nuln oil
dry-ironbreaker
dry- necron compound
Way quicker, and I can hardly tell the difference.
That base is actually a secret weapon resin base, so give credit to them not me, i think they also do a line of scaled bricks for bases also.

Very cool. Thanks for the technique on the metal armor--I just picked up some Necron compound and am eager to try it out.
That's funny about the bases--I just cut out bricks from hard polystyrene; it's not that hard. But I will definitely use your base (and the little, crumbled wall) as an idea to emulate; I like how it looks like an urban battlezone. Anyway, I was looking at my (son's) unpainted Iron warriors this morning and getting excited about getting painting this weekend.

I am glad ANZAC day is such an important day in the New Zealand and Australian calendar, those people deserve to be remembered.

WOW! That is truly impressive, and it's wonderful to see the entire army out to play. I really like the thematic elements of transports, heavy guns and tanks--it really resonates an Iron Warriors force!
Hope you had a good ANZAC weekend, and blew some enemies to bits in the process.

Put together my Vindicator with laser destroyer, now to go find that degenerate Pask. Peice of advice for anyone putting this kit together, ignore the instructions, they tell you to put the end of the laser destroyer on upside down, then promptly change the orientation of the part in the next picture.
The IW symbols are from the forgeworld doors, which i sanded off the door part with some wet 240 sand paper (keep it wet to avoid nasty resin dust from getting airborne).
I have a game this Thursday against some imperial fists which i'm pretty excited about, it'll be my first time duking it out in this iconic match up.
My fix for an upside down set of barrels.
Place sandpaper on flat bench.
Sand in a circular motion.
Once the dorr is nearly sanded away hit it with a dusting brush to finish it up.
Lets play spot the difference
What have I got myself into..................

YEAH BIG GUNS !
This is a very impressive batch indeed, the three last guns will look brilliant together to rain iron on the loyalists (The first one is brilliant too, but with a closer range right ?).
Top of the cake is that Cloverfield defiler, this is a very very cool idea.
It will be interesting to follow the progress on these last additions.

If you're going to sand resin then wet sand it. Resin dust is extremely bad for your lungs and you shouldn't be breathing it in.

Thats a good point, I should have mentioned I wear a respirator, but wet sanding is also a good suggestion.

Good to see some new posts from you, mate. I love the combination of the Hell Cannon and other WFB bitz on your big guns--the daemonic look also goes with the theme well.
More than that, I am excited to see how your Warsmith (Counts as Abbaddon/Perturabo) turns out! That is such an awesome model. And now his HH bionic bodyguard models have come out--would you consider giving even more money to Forgeworld...?
Good luck with the Warhound too--that is going to be epic.

Time for reinforcements from Medrenguard.
Good thing I'm going to warhammer world in a few weeks, I'll be able to pick things up for less than 2/3rds of the price at home.
Stay tuned, big guns and a new look Millitia on the way from Victoria minis, and massed tank reinforcements.
