She looks very good and poses with her three young kids, but 16,000 comments and 12,000 plus shares later, mother Maria Kang is defending herself.
The photo in question has Maria in a sports bra, looking very fit, with the title, "What's Your Excuse?" Many viewers took offense to what they thought was the message. Some thought it was an attack on overweight people.
For example, Michelle Wyatt, comments, "I'm not fat so please don't take it as I'm ‘miserable' and ‘unhappy' with myself, but not everybody wants to look just like you!! Just saying! Posting pics of yourself and your hot body and telling everybody that they don't have an excuse and that they should look just like you is NOT ok! We all can see that you have a hot body, but posting pics and telling people that they should look just like you will only make them feel worse about themselves when they realize that they can't!!"
Kang later wrote a little apology. It reads, in part, "The first step in owning your life, your body and your destiny is to OWN the thoughts that come out of your own head. I didn't create them. You created them. So if you want to continue ‘hating' this image, get used to hating many other things for the rest of your life."
Many people are now coming to Kang's defense in the comments.
I've seen the photo, I have no problem with it. It wasn't an attack on fat people. It was an attack on those who do nothing but make excuses.
And I think she's dead right. As a parent of 3 young children, I know first hand how difficult time management can get, so if she is still able to stay that "fit" then there is no reason other folks out there who say they "want to", can't.
I've seen the picture with caption before. Definite MILF.
Not everyone can have six-pack abs like that, despite whatever regimen that they adopt. However, "I'm a mom" is a terrible excuse for not looking hot. I demand hotness.
However, slightly over-weight girls try harder.
This message brought to you by Kronk, 30% more immature than you since 1976. Also, by the number L.

Right on. I think it's hilarious that the quote from the article includes the woman saying she "can't" do it.
Dreadclaw69 wrote: Struggling to see the attack directed at fat people here
Nothing to see. It's another case of people looking for things to be offended by. It's almost as if its become a culture.
That was my first impression too. Seems that some people are, as you say, just looking for things to take offense at. The good news for those people is that offense is free, and they can take as much of it as they want
Yeah, it wasn't an attack on fat people or calling them out. As a fat person, I commend her on doing what she's done because she wanted to do it.
She is a mother of 3 kids. She has had to lose pregnancy weight 3 times, all while raising children. She looks great (a little too toned for my tastes, but I wouldn't kick her out of bed). If she can manage to lose weight, keep it off, and tone up what's the excuse that people with more time use?
Hello. You’ve been pretty active recently. It seems every time I go on the internet I see you all, hard at work spewing your misery and envy. Does it get exhausting, Haters? Do you ever come home from a long day of relentless negativity and resentment, and just think to yourselves, “geez, I’m not sure that Hating is really worth all this energy”?
Let me assure you: it isn’t. When that tiny voice creeps into your head, when it whispers those doubts — listen to it. It’s telling you the truth. It’s pointing you back towards the land of the living, where humans charge out into the light, striving for greatness. It’s telling you that there’s more to existence than skulking in the shadows, grumbling and grunting like trolls; sneering at those of us who have made ourselves vulnerable to your barbs by actually trying to get things done.
I see you’ve been pulling double duty on this Maria Kang lady. Oh, she’s just the latest victim of yours; she’s the Hater Flavor of the Week. You’ll have a new one come Monday. But, for now, you’re attacking this woman and accusing her of “fat-shaming.” You’re calling her a “bully” and a “bad mother.” You’ve labeled her a liar and a fraud. You’re flooding her with hate mail (the only sort of mail you know how to send). And why? What has she done to spark your ire? Why have you summoned your legions against her?
Because of this:
MariaKangWhatsYourExcuse
Neither you nor I know very much about Mrs. Kang. I can’t speak to her character, and neither can you (but that won’t stop you). However, based on this image and the articles about her, we know she’s a woman, a wife, a mother, and she’s in extraordinary shape. We know fitness is one of her passions and she’s dedicated herself to encouraging others to take care of their bodies. She sees obesity as a major problem in our society, and she wants to do her part to address it. She thinks that if you want to improve your health, you have to stop making excuses and start taking control of your life. We know all of that because, well, she’s said all of that. It’s also the clear and unmistakable message any rational person would glean from that inspirational poster above.
Here are some things she didn’t say: “Fat people are bad!” “If you aren’t in killer shape, you suck!” “You should be ashamed of your body!” “Overweight people should be sent to forced labor camps!” I could go on. There are literally millions of things she didn’t say, as opposed to the very specific things she did say. Again, rational people listen to what a person actually says, rather than randomly fantasizing a conversation that never happened, and accusing the speaker of saying something that, likely, very few people in the history of the universe have ever said.
No, Haters, she didn’t say any of those things. She didn’t insinuate them. She didn’t suggest them. She didn’t secretly imbed them into that photo with invisible ink. She didn’t write it on a note and send it to your house via carrier pigeon.
But you know that, don’t you?
You’re not really delusional, are you? You KNOW that Mrs. Kang was simply engaging in a little positive encouragement, and you still hate her.
Do you know how I became aware of this “controversy” over Mrs. Kang’s physical fitness? Because I’m apparently Facebook “friends” with a few of you. A couple of days ago, I started seeing people post links to articles about this whole kerfuffle. The commentary you wrote in regards to this story always had a similar theme. Of course you charged Mrs. Kang with being “insensitive” because she committed the crime of being proud of her accomplishments. But you also insisted that she didn’t really accomplish anything at all. You said she’s only in excellent physical condition because she’s “lucky” and she has the “right genetics.” She hasn’t had the same struggles and medical issues as you. “It’s easy for her to look like that,” you professed, caustically.
And this is where I must stop you, Haters. Be as thin-skinned, jealous, and spiteful as you like, but you have no right to take someone else’s successes away from them. You have no right to invalidate their achievements. You have no place. You have no standing. You have not the single, slightest damned clue as to what you’re babbling about. She had it easier than you? What genie from what bottle gave you the power to peer inside a stranger’s conscience and confirm that wild speculation? Are you sure she didn’t just work harder? Why have you ruled that possibility out entirely?
OK, put Mrs. Kang’s case aside for a moment. I want to address your overall outlook on life. I want to speak to this toxic demeanor you try to spread like an infectious disease through our culture.
It is this attitude that I detest. I hate it. I don’t hate you — I hate your attitude. I hate the attitude that leads a person to try and diminish the blood, sweat and tears of the strivers and achievers in our society. I hate the attitude that hates success. To scoff at another’s triumph is about the most anti-American thing you can ever do. You might as well decapitate a Bald Eagle while burning the flag and kissing the Communist Manifesto, because you have officially become the most un-American creature in the galaxy. You are standing on the sidelines and spitting on the people crossing the finish line, and I can’t think of a more detestable hobby than that.
It’s not about her six pack abs or her BMI. It’s not about HER, specifically. Not everyone wants to be, or needs to be, or has any interest in being THAT toned and fit. But nobody needs to be morbidly obese. Most of us could treat our bodies better, and ALL of us make too many excuses. That’s the point. Moreover, Mrs. Kang set a goal for herself and then she went out and grabbed it. How dare you sit back, behind that computer screen, hidden away in your houses, and attempt to belittle the WORK and EFFORT that went into it. Have you ever gone after a goal? Any goal? Have you ever put EVERYTHING you have into something? Anything? With that attitude, I’m guessing not.
Some people climb the mountains. Some people stand at the base and hope the climbers hit a loose rock and fall to their deaths. You seem to be in the latter group. Fine, you’re safe down there on the ground. It’s just that you’re not really alive, either.
Success comes in many forms, and the Haters of America despise it in all of its manifestations. It’s easy to look at someone who is wealthy, or fit, or happily married, or whatever other version of success, and quickly assume that these folks “got lucky.” But there’s a problem with that assumption: these things can’t be accomplished passively. These are the fruits of labor that you don’t see, and maybe can’t even fathom. You aren’t inside their minds to hear that voice telling them to give up, to give in, to stop trying. You can’t hear them fight with that voice every minute of the day.
Nothing is easy, Haters. Everything is earned. They have it because they earned it. You don’t because you didn’t. Deal with it.
It’s OK to have flaws. Lord knows, I’ve got ‘em. I’ve got a massive surplus of flaws. I could be so much better — a better husband, a better father, a better Christian. I could be in better shape. Hell, I could be better at blogging. So I look at the folks who have achieved more than me in these areas and I use them for motivation. Hate them? How could I? I’m hiking the same trail, they’re just farther along.
Everybody faces challenges. Everybody has handicaps of some sort. Do you think yours are more crippling? Do you think yours provide you with unique excuses? Really?
Well, if Mrs. Kang’s Facebook photo didn’t change your mind, how ’bout this:
Kyle_Maynard-Wrestling
That’s Kyle Maynard. He’s a championship wrestler. He has no arms and no legs. What’s your excuse?
Or try this one:
SpencerWestSummit_270x203
That guy is missing the bottom portion of his body. He just climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. What’s your excuse?
Here’s another one:
untitled
She’s 77. She just completed the Ironman World Championship. What’s your excuse?
Take a swig of your Hater-fuel and tell me how your excuse is more convincing than theirs. Go ahead, Haters. Tell me how the wrestler with no limbs has only made more of himself because he “got lucky.” Tell me how the elderly woman has an “easier” time staying in shape than you. Look how proud they are. Tell me they’re insensitive for being so sure of themselves.
Go ahead, tell me.
Hello?
That’s what I thought.
But I called this an inspirational message, and I want to deliver on that promise. So here’s the good news: you don’t have to be like this. I’m not saying you should be a bodybuilder, or a millionaire, or anything else; I’m just saying you don’t have to hate success. When you see someone smiling proudly after hitting their target, you don’t have to respond with childish mockery and derision. You don’t have to feel attacked or insulted just because your neighbor is finding happiness and fulfillment in his chosen pursuits. You think your only recourse in the face of greatness is to try to discredit it, but you’re wrong. Your efforts are futile anyway, and they’re also wholly unnecessary. You only carry on like this because you’ve given up on yourselves. You’re running around knocking down sandcastles because you think you aren’t capable of building your own. But you can, my friends. You’re exploding with potential. It would leak out of your pores if only you’d uncross your arms and break a sweat. You can be great at something, I know it. Leave your Hating ways behind and take a step or two down the path to success. It won’t be easy, but the best parts of life are never the easiest parts.
You’ll meet a lot of people along the way. They’re the sort who kick ass and take names. They’re the ones who get things done. They are the folks setting goals and exceeding them. They’re the ones you’ve always Hated so much, but now you’ll be one of them.
You’ll go from Hater to Hated, and, trust me, you’ll never want to go back.
I don’t hate you. I love you, I want you to be happy and successful in whatever way you desire. I know you can be, I just don’t think you know it. Forget about Mrs. Kang. This isn’t about her, she’s just a case study. Congratulate her for what she’s been able to do, then set out to do what you want to do. But, she’s right about what she said: you’ll have to stop making excuses first.
"What is your excuse?" is rather open and intentionally confrontational.
I could read:
...for not having three kids and a trophy wife?
...for not having more kids with a wife that looks like that?
...for having so many kids and risking her good looks?
...for not being at home?
...for being able to afford her cosmetic surgery and club fees?
...for working all day rather than spending it at the gym?
...for not being a kept woman?
...for making exercise your #1 priority and #2 paying for a nanny?
...for not marrying an Asian?
...for not springing back from pregnancy after 8 months? (did not neglect the children working on abs like that?? Probably did sit-ups with the baby rather than rock them.)
The image is not hateful at all, rather pleasant really.
She is responsible for "the thoughts that come out of" her head.
So what is with the "excuse" statement.
If she gets flack for it, she deserves it because she asked for it.
Seems more like "I got it and flaunt it", look at me!!!!
Very happy for her success but go troll elsewhere lady.

Meh she doesn't have to apologize for anything. Most people complain they have no time or are too tired to exercise and then proceed to do nothing productive for hours.
I have an office job that doesn't involve much activity, but there is still plenty you can do. On my breaks (2 not including lunch) I walk up from the 5th floor to the 20th and back down. That combined with with a decent diet can make all the difference. Riding my bike here and there combined with 15 minutes of weights every other day just ensures the results are progressive rather than maintenance. If you don't have time for that then well idk....
This is one where you really need to follow the link to see the photo as well. My particular favorite line is "not everybody wants to look like you."
I had a healthy laugh at that. Of course you do!
Many women, particularly athletes and bodybuilders, would not want to look like her.
It also bears mentioning that Maria Kang makes a living by way of fitness, so to hold herself up as a standard is a bit douchey. But, as someone who was a personal trainer and gym manager, douchey is sort of par for the course.
kronk wrote: In case my MILF comment wasn't clear, I want to put my ____ in her ____ or ____. Possibly ____, but that generally involves alcohol in my experience.
So you mean somewhere uncomfortable? Like the back of a Volkswagen?
Really nice find Alf! Shared that, for sure.
I have a ton of friends that are super super into fitness. A lot of the males are single, which from my experience makes it easier to devote a lot of time to it, but it's never once made me hate on them. In fact, more than anything, it's made me more encouraged to make myself more fit. Nearly all of them want to help, too (though some do try to push whatever "program" they use)
Honestly, I think being fit and healthy is important. Not everyone needs to be as toned as Maria Kang, but dammit, it wouldn't hurt society if everyone strived to be more fit. Instead, we've got the ADA declaring obesity a disease.
For most people, any "can't" that exists in regards to exercise is purely mental. Everyone can do something, even the gigantic person that weighs over 500 pounds. You've just gotta be motivated enough to start somewhere.
Is this on Facebook? How does she get 12,000 comments on a personal page on Facebook? Aren't they supposed to be "friends" on facebook? What am I missing?
It isn't a personal page. It is the facebook page which is associated with her website. In essence it is an extension of her business, which is basically a fitness and eating disorder blog.
I was going to point out that she is a fitness instuctor so that's not really a fair comparison to the rest of society.
Seeing as that has been more or less pointed out I have one last thing to say... Butterface. Seriously guys, MILF? There are probably hotter ageing ladyboys.
I wonder how much she makes or her husband makes that she can afford that body with kids.
And Seaward, It is not that they are off limits it is that having common decency not to be rude to someone has gone away. If this mother went up t someone on the street my size and said "What is your excuse" She would be so in the wrong.

OK thanks. So its like all the other commercials and billboards from every other freaking gym and workout place. Seriosuly people need to shut the bleep up already.

That's when you use my line, "a lot of beer and mini pizzas died to make this body what it is."
Again... she's not calling fat people out, nor is she attacking them.
I appreciate it's Friday and all but if we could try to keep things a wee bit more tasteful and closer to the PG 13 rating with regards to commentary it'd be appreciated.

Doesn't take a rich man to afford that.
Do you really think that 2 hours a day at a gym is the only way to stay in peak physical shape?
Sure, it doesn't hurt but there's a lot more that goes on. If all it took was "2 hours a day at a gym", there would be a lot less fat people.

Did I say that? Missed that. I was just pointing out one way that you can deal with children, for a very affordable means.
hotsauceman1 wrote: That is what you get for being Military? A whole 2$ off?
Most military discounts are generally only 10%. That's a touch more. I don't mind. I'll take advantage of it when I can get it, but I certainly don't expect it.
Your right actually, I did get a military rate on that. If I recall correctly, it was just $15 for the two weeks for civilians.
That's cheap, the last time I checked it was 30 USD per month at the location nearest to me; which of course comes with the obnoxious staff pushing more expensive membership packages.

Well... $15 every two weeks would come to about $30 a month.

Ah, I misread, I thought you were claiming 15 USD for both weeks. Though the obnoxious staff still comes into play, and the behavior of Mrs. Kang (who I did not vote for) is exemplary of such.

You legitimately can't find a half hour of your day?
I do, I exercise alot, Just not a aa gym. I left that after hearing the employees making fun of me for using the machine. I dont like gyms, I feel out of place and intimidated. I tend to ride my bike or run myself

This is going to sound crazy, but there's a really easy solution to this, in two steps:
1. Work out with a purpose, and
2. Use headphones.
People typically don't want to interrupt your workout if its clear you're there to work out and not socialize. The only time I've ever had people even speak to me at my gym when I have my headphones in is to ask if they can fit in a rep.
Maybe it's different at some of the larger gyms, but I've never had a problem at either of the two I belong to.

Seeing as that has been more or less pointed out I have one last thing to say... Butterface. Seriously guys, MILF? There are probably hotter ageing ladyboys.
I thought that's why God gave us paper bags?
On topic, I knew a guy who was over 400 pounds and managed to loose over a 150 by dieting and living healthier. He had a heart attack recently and died, but he was well on his way to be a healthy person again.
If he could go from barely being able to stand to that, then yes, almost anyone can lose the weight if they put their mind to it. I can't really talk though, I've gotten out of shape and really need to get my butt in gear on exercising again.

Sure, members of the club don't tend to interrupt other members of the club unless they want to work in, need a spot, or want to compete. But staff will often behave obnoxiously at every opportunity because they are instructed to sell you products that the club offers. This means pitching you when you enter the club , when you leave the club, and any time you want to make use of a service the club offers; often something involving social media (which allows them to pitch you every time you check facebook).
Bear in mind that I am distinguishing between a gym, and a club. A gym is a place you go to exercise, a club is an organization that pervades your life. Gold's Gym is a club, not a gym. Indeed, it is one of the pioneers of turning gyms into clubs.

We have absolutely zero of that at our gym. It might be a franchise thing?
"What's your excuse?" is basically "What's your problem?" reworded in a more passive aggressive manner.
Also, it kinda feels like it has the unspoken suffix of "fatass" on the end... even if the word isn't there, the implication definitely is.
It's not really intended to be motivational, she could easily have said "I did it, and so can you!" or something else instead of taking the negative route.

I think its a market thing. The more competitive the market is, the more likely members will find themselves under pressure to be members of a particular community, which often involves being fit in a certain way.

Except of course its in the same style and structure I've seen of every other gym and instructor. Whats your beef?
As someone who takes care of himself very well, I have to go ahead and defend the woman in the photo. I've been hearing a lot of people bitch and complain about this, but the message is totally true and she makes a good point. Sure it's blunt, but the world needs to stop walking on eggshells around fat people - it's gone on long enough and it's now a major problem for the West. Barring physical problems or sickness, people have no excuse for being obese/overweight. It's brought on by poor diet and sloth - both of those things are choices people make. I say again - people choose to eat poorly, and not physically exert themselves.
I spend an hour at the gym every day, that's 4% of each day exercising. It's not much time if people just prioritize it over sitting on their asses watching sports or bad shows on TV or having a food binge session. The obesity issues plaguing the Western world are pathetic and it all boils down to lazy people who don't want to sweat a little bit and can't resist very unhealthy foods.
Oh and I'm aware that this is a wargaming forum and lots of people here may be heavy, but this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Think about that before quoting me with the intention of flaming me.
Seems what we're learning here is that people will get up-their-own-asses righteous about being fat or not being fat. Seems like two sides of the same eating disorder coin.
I spend an hour at the gym every day, that's 4% of each day exercising. It's not much time
I'm sorry, but that right there is what people get upset about. People who are lucky enough to have time to go to the gym on a regular basis being sanctermonius about it. Saying its easy. Now, I'm not over weight, I eat well, and I do think many people could do more. However attitudes like yours help no one. An hour a day is a lot of time. I leave for work at 7:30am, get home from work at 6:30pm. By the time I have cooked, eaten, had a wash, done the other little bits I have to do it is 8-8:30 pm. This is not unusual. Now, I could go to the gym for an hour and comeback and go strait to bed, but that would be my life Monday to Friday. And I don't have kids. If going to the gym is something you enjoy and your hobby, fine, but most people have other things they want to do, or they want to relax for an hour or two after working hard all day.
It's the same with this woman. She can do that because she is paid to. She is telling other people they can achieve what she has but they have other things in life. Most people are not able to spend all day getting fit. It's like the rich man telling a single mum working 60hours they just need to work harder.

When someone is at serious risk of death because they are obese/overweight, 1 hour is still not much time to save them from destruction. Let's also consider that diet is the absolute key factor in being obese/overweight, and in slimming down. I notice you didn't comment on that part. Sorry, the smokescreen you have put up isn't good enough.
And by the way, I have a full day just like you. I work 5am - 1:30 pm, hit the gym, then go off to my campus to sit in classes until I'm home at 9pm. We all have busy schedules, what you choose to fit into it is again, up to you. If I were in your position, I'd go to the gym at night and then go straight to bed, like you proposed.

You won't convince any of us that you're fat when your avatar clearly shows your extremely well-developed body!!
I'm not sure why we are acting as if she was attacking "fatties" (which is insulting enough already), when as far as I can tell she is being an ass to anyone not fitness instructor level fit. It isn't being confrontational to the obese, it is being confrontational to those whose lives don't revolve around working out. I agree that attack is probably to strong a word, but her language was definitely aggressive, which makes people defensive. If she had worded it differently this probably wouldn't have been an issue, and probably been better for her business. Instead of "What's you excuse" she should have gone with "Even after three kids I was able to do this, and you can too! Let me help you!".
1 hour is still not much time to save them from destruction
That is a silly argument. You can spend three hours a day at a gem and you can still be destroyed. Certainly it is better to be healthy then not, but it doesn't save anyone from 'destruction'; no one gets out of here alive, no matter how fit. The better argument is quality of life, not that you are going to die. And Steve specifically said if that is how you want to spend your one free hour a day that is perfectly fine, but some people might want to paint, or read a book, or post on Dakka. He never said it couldn't be done, just that given a finite amount of time in a day not everyone wants to spend their limited free time at the gym.

Fair point there.
In my example, I pay a horrific amount of money to go to a gym just a few floors below me. But if I didn't, I wouldn't.

Being healthy and looking good are two different things. One can look good while being anorexic, bulimic, or an abuser of steroids; and that is before we dig into what being "healty" really means.

Oh please, you know exactly what I meant. If your doctor said "Lose weight, or die young", it certainly is that exact scenario. I can't believe you actually equated my statement with some sort of attainment of eternal life. I'm shocked . . .

By my calculations you don't have time to get a proper nights sleep in that time. If your working at 5 am and getting home at 9pm your getting a maximum of 7 hours sleep. That's assuming you are lucky to live close enough to work it could be less. Your presumably young and enjoy going to the gym, but for most people that is just not a sustainable routine.
I don't know what your talking about a smoke screen. I didn't say anything about food because that's not what the thread is about. And I'm not disagreeing with you about people eating unhealthily. Being out of the house from 4:30 (at a guess if you start at 5am) until 9pm is not practical for most people.
As a student you might be able to keep that up, but long term, once your start having a real job that leaves you mentally exhausted and a familily you want to spend time with that hour is just not there like you think it is now.

This is the day:
I wake up at 4am, shower and dress, I'm out by 4:45am. I work until 1:30pm, I'm at the gym by 2pm. I work out until 3, sometimes 3:30, come home and shower, then I'm on the bus to school for the evening. I actually get less sleep than you thought, I run on about 4 - 5 hours a night. I've been doing it for years though, I'm very used to it. I'm 24, and I do understand I have an advantage because of that. Let's cut out my evening and assume I don't have lectures to attend. That's a whole lot of spare time to screw around with! Not to mention days off work like weekends and such.
edit - looks like someone QQed to the bosses of the site and got my signature removed. Unbelievable, people.
Did you know thin, young people die as well? There are also lots of older fat people as well, it is just they have more problems then those who are not. More likely a doctor will tell you to lose weight or face a whole host of issues, diseases, and harm that you would most likely not have to face otherwise. I think we also need to dfine what we mean by fat here as well. Being on the internet can mean that Kate Upton is considered a fatty.

I laid it out above. That is 5 days a week, but the gym is absolutely 7.
4-5 hours is not healthy for 99% of people. You may be lucky and be one of the few that can manage on that, or your headed for major problems. You do not get used to less sleep. Some people do sleep less. Most can't.
I notice you have zero time to cook and eat. Also unhealthy. Not stopping to eat is damaging. Also expensive. I suspect you may be going to the gym but doing damage in other ways. Maybe not, but you have to accept most people don't take 15 mins to get to work. They do need more sleep than you. The only reason you can manage that routine is because of these things. Good for you. Well done. Seriously, I'm glad you enjoy it and find that fulfilling, but you have to see you are not the norm. Most people cannot do that.
Oh, and by the way, going to the gym and doing that much exercise 7 days a week is bad for you. Ask any elite athlete. Rest days are needed.
Manchu wrote: P-UFO, I don't want to tell you how to live your life but shouldn't you be at the gym right now or at least getting ready for class?

I don't cook because my meals don't require cooking.
I live on canned tuna, whole wheat bread, apples, carrots, and tons of other vegetables that I just pull out of my fridge and feast on. No cooking necessary for any of my eating.

You don't really have an advantage because of your age, as someone that is 24 themselves, here is my day:
I'm up by 5:30, showered, shaved, lunch made and out the door by 6:15/6:20 to drive an hour to work. Get to work, work until 5, drive an hour or so home. get home around 6:30 (freaking Cleveland and Canton traffic sucks!) eat dinner. It's now about 7/7:15 or so, and I have 3 and a half to 4 hours to wind down, prep for the next day, and get to sleep. I do have the hour to work out, but after my long day, the last thing I want to do is work out and make myself more exhausted but more wound up.
Working in an office sucks and the mental drain makes you not want to do anything physical. So my excuse? mini pizzas and beer (and mental drain of staring at code for 8 hours a day).
Right, next time I'll be sure to specify that I didn't mean going to the gym gives you eternal life.
I didn't say you said that, you said that being overweight leads to destruction, and all I said was that being alive leads to destruction.
Being fit is good, but you come across as having an unhealthy obsession with healthiness. It is like a guy with OCD that can't understand why everyone doesn't flip the light switch 5 times whenever they enter a room. I can't imagine it is bad as it is coming off, but your life sounds relentlessly, incredibly dour.
PrehistoricUFO wrote: I spend an hour at the gym every day, that's 4% of each day exercising.
Everyone has their own reasons for their degree of fitness.
You have set yours at a higher priority, which is great.
To judge others and apply labels you are not entitled to (just plain rude).
Broad sweeping statements are the realm of prejudice.
Its like judging a smoker: just grit your teeth and hope they see the error in their ways eventually and point out some tactics or methods to possibly quit.
I am personally in agreement NOW for making the time and have lost a huge amount of weight (65lbs and counting) but can also see the other side of getting too involved in other things and dismissing your need to maintain a healthy weight until it is a huge uphill battle. It is almost not being "selfish" enough to make the time to invest in your health.
It all happens not always as a flaw of character, but a whole series of choices and them accumulating a pound at a time.
Alfndrate wrote: You don't really have an advantage because of your age,
The poster said I can only manage such little sleep due to my age, that's what I was referring to.
I was making mention that your age doesn't have to do much with your I can run on very little sleep. I'm 24 and I become useless on anything less than 6 hours of sleep. Why do I not work out at the end of the day? Because I'm mentally drained and the last thing I want to do is waste an hour becoming physically drained as well.

You are destroying your body and are going to die early.
At least you won't be a fattie in your casket though, so congrats?

Canned tuna. Contained mercury and high levels of salt. Raw vegetables are much harder for your body to process and most of the nutrients pass right through. Your body processes it in to sugars quite quickly and eating too much can lead to type 2 diabeties.
Apart from anything else it would be boring to eat the same thing every day.

Lets not forget that it doesn't always relate to eating to much or being lazy. There are other reasons why people gain weight, medication being a big one, and some diseases as well.

I'm not sure why you got all philosophical about the destruction thing. It seemed rather out of place in the context of the discussion.
If you think it's an unhealthy obsession, you're entitled to that of course. I do disagree that you can parallel my stance with someone who has OCD and can't understand why others don't tic the way they do, though.
As far as my life being dismal - I actually really enjoy it! I work with great people, I enjoy my job, exercising and improving is rewarding as hell, school is great because I'm good at it and I meet tons of girls. Gym = girls. Period.
Dang, I totally lost track of what the article was about when I saw her picture. That's one attractive lady.
I'm better now though, so here are my .02 cents: the fat-acceptance movement kinda worries me. Being really overweight really shouldn't be celebrated. We live in an increasingly sedentary society and the basic American diet is waaay too heavy on sugars, carbs, and fats. People need to be encouraged to take good care of their bodies. Does everyone need to be as fit and toned as Mrs. Kang? Heck no! But you need to eat well and try to exercise, even if you can only 30 minutes of cardio a day. Being unhealthy just makes you miserable, and the fact that there's a movement to promote unhealthy living boggles my mind. I

I only have a couple of slices of bread per day. Any dieter will tell you that they are allowed cheat days where they eat anything they want. I do have cheat days.
Once every couple of weeks I'll toss my control out the window and eat poorly. Usually I'll have sweets, like chocolate and cookies, maybe a hamburger, chips, other stuff I normally don't have.
I think it's the political correctness that is offending everyone. Bring it back to the 90s people, this would have been a motivational poster, not something she should apologize over. We've become too touchy. Remember, we're in the years for apologizing over this, blaming the teachers for kids getting bad grades, and parents having the cops called for delivering an appropriate spanking to misbehaving brats.

You present yourself as having a fairly myopic view on what constitutes healthiness and how one should approach it, and seem to have trouble understanding why others would/could view it differently.

I had alluded to that, we all have our own "challenges" that can make something like maintaining a healthy weight harder for some.
It is where it falls in the priority list that determines how bad it gets.
Our UFO friend here it could be in the top 3 while for others it may not make the top 10.
Society keeps distracting us to look for things outside ourselves to correct something we don't like... there's an app for that!
Lipo-suction, various forms of stomach banding/stapling, joining clubs/gym basic training courses, special prepared drug/food plans it seems to say you cannot possibly do it yourself.
Eat small amounts at regular intervals, raise your heart rate at a sustained level for at least a half hour a day and supposedly that is all that is needed to be OK.
Then you find out tons of other little gems to help you along... you know you should drink as little as possible during a meal so you can feel full? 20 minutes is what it takes to feel full so do not eat a second helping until that time... it is just irritating how often there is some "expert" telling us what to do and they know no better than the next guy.

Pretty much this. I've lost close to 70 pounds and 4 pants sizes since June. I changed my diet and get about 60- 90 mins of gym time (including travel and shower time) in 5 days a week. I typically do it during my lunch hour at work, which it looks like many of you get. Work at an office and want to decompress? Can't recommend going to the gym enough. I typically do a 10-15 minute cardio warmup followed by high rep lifting. It's not hard at all
@UFO - instead of bingeing, you'd be much better off allowing yourself some of those sweets as part of your normal diet. We've cut down on our processed food considerably (we cook from relative scratch 5-6 days a week) but don't completely cut out sweets. My guilty pleasure is red vines my wife's is dark chocolate. Allow yourself a treat as part of your normal diet and you won't binge on it later.
But really, lots of excuses here, and that woman, while fit, isn't in the kind of shape that takes more than eating healthy and getting regular exercise to maintain. Despite what Lena Dunham wants you to believe, being overweight isn't healthy. Lose a few pounds and your body will thank you. Plus you'll just feel better.

I get up at 5:45 in the morning. at work by 7. I Push carts up a hill for two hours. Go to class until 2:00 with a small lunch break. YEah I could exercise between class and work. But I would be sweaty at work and stink, My boss would not like that. I work for another tw hours sitting at a cash register which puts me to sleep(Sitting at a cash register at the end of the day is tiring, if im up and around I dont get tired) Then i finally gt home at 6. 11 hours of work. 11 hours. You think i can get up and go to the gym? And I have even more oodles of homework during the weekend.

Well, we have a whole thread full of insufferably self righteous bootstrappy types telling poor people on food stamps how to fix their stupid lives and not be so poor and lazy, might as well have an additional one with the same types helping out fat people not being so fat and lazy. It's kind of noble really.
If I don't exercise durng the day, I typically do so at around 8pm
I'm also pretty tired of all the overweight people that think wearing tights as pants or wearing belly shirts is an okay fashion for them to adopt. It isn't. But then again, I've never worn gak that doesn't fit me or my body type for the sake of being fashionable.
I don't think being proud of being fat is something we should espouse.

The good news is that no one is forcing you to participate. Besides, in the thread you're alluding to those of us commenting here were simply stating that we don't believe non nutritional junk food and sugary drinks should be covered by SNAP. Which actually ties into this thread well.
Yup. You play baseball and break a neighbor's window by being careless? Grounded for a week. Do it again, having not learned a lesson? Mild spanking. I'm not advocating BEATING a child. I think all that teaches a child is that it's sometimes OK try and get what you want with physical violence*.
I mean, I'm not an expert. That's my opinion. I could be wrong and you could be totally right. But my limited, anecdotal experience says that corporal punishment is not a useful teaching tool because it doesn't teach the correct lesson and the people I have known who were subjected to it had measurably worse outcomes than those who did. This actually might make an interesting thread in and of itself, no shortage of parents in the OT.
*which isn't a bad lesson, since that's how the world at large often works, I suppose.

How is me saying I think people that wear gak that fits their body type making someone feel bad about themselves? I don't wear skinny jeans or tight fit t shirts because they look terrible on me because my body type doesn't support it.
Believe it or not, not everything is made for everyone. And that's okay. But I won't apologize for saying people should dress to their body type.

Dude you don't know what the feth a full day is.
Please tell me how operating for 18+ hours isn't a full day? Gtfo buddy. *rolls eyes*
You're not doing 18+ hours a day. You're doing a part time job, farting around and then doing some evening classes.
Your average working mom would view that as a dream given form.
For what it's worth, I'd like to point out that being a student doesn't involve exclusively just putzing around, and it's certainly not easy, assuming you're actually dedicated to your studies.
There was a period of a few months back when I was working myself to the point of 2 hours a night on average. It got so bad that I was unable to actually remember much during that period, and even now, that series of months is still a blur to me. If you were to ask me anything that happened during the period of January through early February of this year, I honestly couldn't tell you.

I agree with your fashion advice here... And I honestly believe that if you are happy with how you look, etc. then go for it, but as soon as you bitch and moan about it, then it's up to you to fix it.
Do I have that 28 inch waist that I did when I was 20? Nope, but then again, I got married, got severely injured Mountain Biking, and ultimately got sick of being out of shape. Heck, I don't even want to be that small again. Simply because the main activity which drives my desire for being fit, having a bit of heft is a definite plus. (I wear the #2 jersey on my rugby club ) Sure, there are definite advantages to being a lighter weight, but ultimately, I believe that if you can build it and maintain it, you can definitely be quite healthy with more weight on your frame

I don't find this womans pic offensive (being overweight myself) but I can see why some might, when I first saw it I did think she was telling fat people she has time to care for three kids and still work out, so why cant fat people. On that topic I dont work out as honestly I have a lot of stuff going on that mentally drain me, so I don't have the mental energy to go 'Well, time to wear myself out physically".
Off topic but I just want to say, people saying overweight/obese please remember that obese and overweight are two different things, those who are overweight are in no real danger of those illnesses and conditions associated with weight issues, and as long as there is no weight gain you are pretty fine, although losing weight is still good (I'll lose it eventually), where as obese is the danger zone, where you are in greater risk of all those bad things (stroke, heart attacks, etc...) and you are medically advised to lose weight.

That's kind of the point I was making. Depending on how out of control your schedule gets, you can end up losing more than you gain.

The problem is that losing weight isn't healthy either. My little sister is currently doing her doc in kinesiology and told me a bit about her subject. Nothing is healthy about being overweight. It's a worse vector for disease than smoking and alchool. When you are losing fat, you're apparently releasing an accumulated amount of toxins and heavy metals that had been sealed in fat. And for those large enough, losing weight will also lead to the need for surgery.
Really, from what I get, the answer is to never let yourself go down that road.
Thats MUCH easier said then done, and Im ignoring people that have conditions that just help them become fat, Im talking just plain ol lazy bones such as my self.

But Morons on E! And TmZ said the same thing about Kate Upton. Neither she or Scarlett are obese, and it's funny to even think they are. Maria Kang is in good shape. Absolutely. But like I said. She isn't overly toned or bulky. She doesn't look like a sprinter or a pole vaulter or a crossfit champ. She looks fit.
I think were actually to a great point in the US right now where people like Kate Moss and the runway models of the early 2000s are no longer our paragon image of beautiful, and that we have women like Kate upton, who is still fit but has curves, as some of the beauty ideals in Hollywood. The "beautiful waif" is no longer the beauty standard and I think that's a good thing. I don't, however, accept the whole Lena Dunham/Rebel Wilson mentality that being obese (obviously more with Wilson than Dunham, but I dislike Dunham for plenty of other reasons) is perfectly okay. It isn't. It's unhealthy. I think young women being happy with their healthy bodies is a good thing, but I don't think being overweight should be encouraged.
And, despite my weight loss, I'm hardly a paragon of health. I still want to lose around 50 more pounds because being healthy makes you feel better. Both physically and emotionally.
I live on canned tuna, whole wheat bread, apples, carrots, and tons of other vegetables that I just pull out of my fridge and feast on. No cooking necessary for any of my eating.
edit - Also protein shakes.
I'd vary that meat intake, really. Mercury stories won't stop me eating delicious tuna (I have to bring some home for Lady Deadmouse anyway), but I eat a can every 2 weeks, perhaps even every months. Eating it daily could lead to very serious cancers and degenerative brain diseases. And it's not something that's hinted at by a few fringe researchs, there's over a thousand five hundred study of those effects. You'll grow yeast inside you until that very yeast start to release organic mercury on it's own. You're like, growing a plant inside you that will end up pissing toxic metals all over your insides.
Also, because I have lived with someone on a similar diet - I hope you either do not have a roommate, or that your accomodations have very good air flow.

Yup. You play baseball and break a neighbor's window by being careless? Grounded for a week. Do it again, having not learned a lesson? Mild spanking. I'm not advocating BEATING a child. There is a huge difference between a spanking and a beating. So, yes. Appropriate spanking. But thanks for proving my point about how different things are these days. I rest my case.
Have you ever considered that there might be a correlation between corporeal punishment for kids and the above-average level (for Western world countries) of violence in your society?

OK, so I'm wrong because I'm apparently a hippie? Do you have any real arguments or are you going to keep going for ad hominem attacks?

The crime rate of the nordic countries crime rate by native nordic people is very low.
They're obviously doing something right. Which is why I'm raising my kids on Scandinavian guidelines.
The harshness expected from my Russian ancestry is not something I believe to be effective.

To thread jump a bit... Spanking children is a True American Value, and one those dirty, pinko commie liberals are trying to take from us
Sides, its just the person opinion on her looks. I hate Bob Seger, and being from Michigan should cause outbursts of rage and stoning to death from my fellow Michiganders, But usually people here just say "Eh....youre an idiot" and we all have a laugh.
So yea, her body obviously looks nice, she looks ok, I wouldnt say no to her if she followed me into a bathroom stall thats for sure.....................then again I wouldnt turn that down in most cases anyways

She is pretty hot.
Why would that inflame tensions?
People see "Hot mom" and "fat people" and you already have people siding into "us vs them", by identifying her as hot, you'll already have your standard bevy of white knights dashing to rescue internet maidens and then you'll have white knights for the other side championing the cause of the overweight, then come in black knights who aren't really for their side, just against the other side. And then you get a rapidly building snowball of stupid.

I like that we agree the overweight white knights aren't dashing anywhere.

Oh, but I do. Weekends are occupied by gym time only and during the weekdays, I don't go to bed until midnight or so. After I get home if I don't have homework I'm calling the girls lol.
So, you're saying that you're a gym rat and expect other people to be gym rats?
As a gym rat, that is obnoxious.
Gym rats spend hours at the gym every day, and most of them juice. You know, those enormous guys who wear big Y-back shirts to show off their enormous back muscles? Those are gym rats. I spend an hour a day there, and 30 mins is just running. I'm far from being a rat and I'm willing to bet you're also not that hardcore. So I ask, do you, in fact, even lift?
I'm responding to stuff near the bottom of page 5, so it may lose relevance to the topic. I wore size 28 pants in HS, went up to 32 by the end of college, and up until a few months ago was at a tight 34. I've always had a bit of a belly since HS, although not actually "large", it was enough that I didn't like it. In HS I played soccer all fall and spring, took Tae Kwan Do all year long 3 days a week (except soccer game nights), played basketball during lunch and gym every day (gym every other), and played in my driveway with friends too. You know what? I lost no weight. None. Worked my ass off, ate healthy (my dad didn't believe in TV dinners) and got nothing out of it. Now I'm cutting carbs almost completely (ate plenty back then, as they were considered "healthy") and my 34-35 waistline is down to a 32-33. I could wear 32s, but they'd be tight. I've dropped more than 15 pounds in the last month and a half. And I've done no exercise. Nada. Just regular day to day living and any lifting I've had to do at work. That's it. Where am I going with this? Exercise doesn't always make the difference, it can be all in what you eat. My previous food options included lots of subs (half at lunch, half at dinner), sandwiches, spaghetti and meat sauce, etc. All white grains, all sugar. Now the subs have switched to salads, and the spaghetti has switched to whole wheat pasta: no white pasta (I'm a pasta racist, so sue me). Natural starches, like potatoes, were totally acceptable to the diet I built for myself, and it's been working well. I even got to the point that I allow myself to cheat a bit and have cookies and yellow rice once in a great while. I find that I'm not really missing the bread either. If you hate working out (like I do) and hate running (what's the point if you aren't chasing a ball?), try the limited/healthy carbs thing. It might help others like it helps me. Only if you're unhappy with your body. Also still wish this was a 90s mentality instead of the PC crap we deal with today.
TL: DR-If you want to lose weight and hate exercise, cut out white carbs. It worked for me. Massive weight loss in a short time period. If you're happy with your weight, do what you do. I miss the 90s mentality.
Also, after reading page 6...hooray! I caused conflict. Nah, actually I'm just glad my violent American brothers are siding against European hippies who don't believe in spanking children and believe in...topless...OJ commercials...well played, Walrus, well played....

Why make the distinction between native Scandanavians and those of immigrant backgrounds who are making up an increasingly larger percentage of the region all the time? Could it be because Swedish females now have a 1 in 4 chance of being raped in their lifetime primarily because of immigration from incompatible cultures from the third world while having first made the local Swedish population docile?

No, it isn't. She's fit, but she isn't overly toned. Her arms are "normal". She doesn't have a 6 pack.
It is very difficult for women to get, let alone maintain, a 6-pack; doubly so for women that have been pregnant. Her abs are about as defined as the average woman could expect their's to be if they spent ~20 hours per week in the gym, ate well, and had never been pregnant.

I spend 1.5-3 hours in the gym (also read "working out") every day, including stretching. Excluding athletic seasons, I have done this for 13 years; with my workouts being modified according to purpose.
Cheesecat wrote: According to Cracked stretching makes things worse.
According to Cracked, by way of NYT and UNLV, static stretching before an intense period of exertion will make that exertion more difficult; which is correct. Active stretching (also known as a warm-up) prior to a period of intense exertion is fine, and recommended.

Quite right. Only certain groups should allowed to have ideas and express them. People who disagree should shut up.

OK fair enough, I wasn't sure what types of stretching you were doing nor am I that familiar with different types of stretches.

I have a hard time finding sympathy. Being fat is one of the few "diseases" where the cure is to simply not be fat, barring extremely rare conditions that nobody in this conversation has.
Some people being fat doesn't authorise thin people to shout out about it without getting any reaction.
What I mean is, another interpretation of the Kang picture is that she is an arrogant boastful gak head, rather than a beautiful woman spreading an important message. It's only a promotion for her fitness business, not a professional health consultation.
Being a dick is one of the few social diseases where the cure is simply not to be a dick.
I don't really find her that hot but then again I'm into big tits (yes, I know it's shallow but it is what I like) so I guess it's no surprise that I'm not fond of her at least appearance wise, she's like a 6 or 7 for me.
That woman has created a serious problem of unfitness by annoying fat and thin people to the extent they have spent hours typing complaints on computers instead of getting out for a breath of fresh air.

I should have worded that a bit differently, but it wasn't meant to be a dig at Seaward. It was in reply to the whole "Being a dick is one of the few social diseases where the cure is simply not to be a dick" line of conversation Seaward and Kilkrazy had.

There's also, depending on your sport/activity, "dynamic stretching" exercises that one can do as part of a warm-up that work quite well.

Golds Gym provides 2 hours of child care a day, for $13 every two weeks in membership fees.
Doesn't take a rich man to afford that.
Which brings up an interesting question: Do you want typical gym employees to have 2 hours a day of influence on your child during his formative years?
2 hours with grandma can make my boy into a monster. I can't imagine how bad things would get with some schmo who doesn't care and is paid a low wage.

It's just a personal response man, besides I get the impression that this women is conventionally attractive (considering how many guys/gals claim she's hot) but she doesn't do much for me looks-wise. Also why does it bother you so much that physical appearance is important to some

Regardless of race, women are considered to be attractive when they have "an hourglass shape" or "curves," with this woman falling on the outside of the belle curves.
