Glad to see you've been keeping busy! Is the squiggle god still not satisfied with your contributions after that bloody awesome titan or was it a, 'talent untold for a lifetime of servitude' sort of deal?

Seriously that titan is really something, it all is, you never seem to wobble. So which of your babies is bigger now, the titan or the wain?

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Cheers!

@Casey - Welcome back (been a while) I suspect that no matter how many squiggles are applied it will never be enough I measured the titan vs the little one, he towers over him, the little one is 3 and a half now, where has that time gone!

Update: Startomg the layering, red and some parchments first

I love the effort that goes into your WIP shots. It's a mighty impressive record, and instruction manual at that.

@Casey - I know, its kind of scary how quickly they grow up.

@Graven - Thanks mate! I have tried to make pictures easier to see, sometimes that works, sometimes not so much.

Update: Got all but the edge highlighting of the grey (and squiggles) done

Hey I looked back about 10 pages and couldn't see the answer. Currently painting my grey knights army and loved the back backs you did!! Wondering how you achieved the blue and brass colours?
I don't own a airbrush so even the colours would be helpful, if you don't mind divulging!

@WarbossDakka - Heh, considering the blog started in Feb 2011, I'd agree with you

@Justaerin - I had a spare set of NDK pilot legs, what was I going to do, let them go to waist (Pun intended)

@Cam - Aww, you're far to kind, I would say there are easily better painters out there, I'm forever in awe at the skill I see on the boards, but to be considered great is a high honour indeed!

@Diesinthewarp - Welcome to the blog! Brass is Warplock Bronze, followed by a purple wash, then layer with warplock again, highlight with Hashut Copper. Blue is Macgragge blue base, black wash, macragge blue layer, enchanted blue layer, ice blue highlight, skull white extreme highlight. I hope that helps.

Update: Terminators done, crappy lighting as one of my normal lights gave up the ghost and its base shattered, so only 3 lights to form a light box and the shadows are horrible.

It's not too noticeable, hopefully you can get a replacement (shouldn't be too difficult). Anyway, the highlights are great, as they are at just the right colours to give a consistant gradient as you get towards the top of the model. Awesome work Knightley, what's next on the to-do list?

Iffy lighting or not, another unit joins the ranks in the resplendent grey armour we know and love.

Can't remember if we've discussed this before but how do you store the army? If it was me I'd have it all on display but it would take up a lot of space and I'm guessing a lot of dusting.

Been a little bit since I checked in on this blog. The Spartan turned out great, and so did these Termies. I love Grey Knight models, although if I get some I'll probably do the standard metallic finish on their armor. Which is not to say I don't like yours; one of the best things in this hobby is seeing many different people's artistic take on the same models! I'd kind of like to see what you could do with the GK character in the Triumvirate of the Primarch, or maybe even what you could do with Guilliman himself, although I'm not sure if there's room for any squiggles on that busy model.

@Gits - Cheers

@WarbossDakka - Thanks! Next I have is more troops, I have two squads of interceptors (making 4 total) two 5 man strike squads, a 5 man paladin squad and a 5 man purifier squad.

@Casey - I am still looking at a reliable way to show the army, currently space dictates they be housed in GW cases and plastic boxes, I am scheduled to move house again in the next 3 years or so and I may have a better area to set up display cases, so for now I have this
Spoiler:

@Zerg - Agreed, I really like looking at peoples takes on classic models, LDP have a very amazing way he paints his Ultramarines, dark and resplendent, yet on the flip side mray01 has very vibrant and amazing ultramarine models (very old thread here - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/262956.page) Funny you mention the new GK and Triumvirate set, I've pre-ordered it, if only for Cypher and the GK, I figured that LDP might be a little interested in Guilliman and could potentially buy it from me.

Update: Next Interceptor squad underway

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/03/09 13:47:53

Do I sense some old metals in that squad? Some very familiar poses and details jumping out at me.

That's a nice storage solution, very neat and easy to access, hopefully you'll have room for display one day.

@Casey - Oh yes, of the models in this push, there is about 50% old metal model in there.

Update: Didn't get a lot of time, so only a few more colours laid out.

When was the last time you had them all out for an army shot? Or are you bumping up against critical levels of awesomeness, where if you got them all together they would form some sort of critical mass singularity and break the universe? So you can only dole out small teases for the safety of us all?

I can’t imagine GW boxes are the most economical way to store an army. If you are going to expand, I might look into KR Multicase. Their whole philosophy is based on neatly stacked storage boxes you just pop into a bag to take down to the FLGS.

If you see LDP, and he’s not planning on getting Guilliman, do me a favor and give him a “I’m so disappointed in you” look for me. I wouldn’t ask you to chain him to his workbench and force him to paint it, but I wouldn’t say no to that either. His own blog has been a bit quiet here, or I’d just harangue him myself there. But the world needs to see his take on RG.

Nice progress on the last batch of knights there.

@Justaerin - This is a good thing! I hope I can help motivate you to get some GK lovin' I'll have to stop by and offer my comments if you do

@Graven - Cheers man, whats interesting as these models were the unpainted ones from your "Graven Knights" I brought from you a while back, the legend continues

@Azazelx - Love the pun! and thanks for the kind comments.

@AoV - Getting close to a brotherhood I would think, Still have some more things to finish it off

@Nev - I think everything was out in January for the end of year photograph, that was what we in the business call a "Armagedd-omglookatallthemodels' I agree with the economical way, only my GK's are in GW cases, the rest are in the plastic bins filled with foam, its slight more economical that way. LDP is down at university at the moment which is why his blog is a wee bit quite, trust me though the Gulliman is earmarked for him. If he doesn't want it I'll make is some Marine god for my army.

@Mad - Thanks man, sword and faces seem to be my jam eh?

@EDC - Relentless? I reckon consistent would be more an apt name at this point!

Update: Washes done, gah it takes so loooong!

I just noticed something. How do you choose what stages to build up to? For example you've left the Halberd arm off, as well as the backpacks. Do you prefer doing them separately?

Either way, great work. White and grey are amazing colours when put together.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/03/13 19:39:16

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Tough call, if you'd asked me that question 3 years ago I would have said I would keep bits separate to ensure all surfaces get paint. However now, I plan on assembling the whole model and paint only the bits that can be seen, in this case the models arm fell off so I'll glue it back on once I get to the last stage

Update: Reds started, only got about 20-30 mins of painting.

You have to give the old models some credit, those indents on the gun barrels are so much easier to drill. Anyway, they seem to be getting there, as usual the power weapons are looking fantastic.

@WarbossDakka - Yeah, as much as I complain about the edges, the design and over all aesthetic really speaks my language and my favourite models have to go to the GK metal Terminators.

@Cam - Nice to see I have some agreement on the looks

@Az - Thanks dude!

@Gits - Cheers mate!

@Solar - I tell you what, once I finish this push I'll do a GK/SM pic of all the completed models for everyone. How does that sound?

Update: Last year I played in a couple of D&D games as a player I quickly realised I wanted people to run around in my head, so I've been working on being a DM for a group of mates. All up we're onto session 6 with the last two being everyone in the same team together, and the feedback so far is they really like it, so much so that two of the players have had models from www.heroforge.com created and they have asked me to paint them. So for the next couple of weeks expect WIP's of some D&D models

First up is Garion Von Adel, Human Paladin of the Order of the White Gauntlet. I've not had a lot of restrictions to work on, so the player provided his family crest for me (going on the cloak) and said put a white gauntlet on the sheild, so here we are. Oh he also has a scar going from his temple to the back of his neck (covered with hair at the back)

After what you produced for your own D&D model I'm keen to see what you produce for your mates.

Looking good so far, free hand is going to be choice I reckon. Order of the White Gauntlet... the white hand of Saruman... this human could go down a darker path

@Graven - Thank mate, buying a house is a very expensive endeavour

@Mad - Agreed! I am planning on tempting the Paladin with some dark options to see if I can bait him *insert evil laugh*

Update: So showed my mate his washed model, he had feed back about the shield design and thought he had told me he had redesigned the look, so now its been updated as welll!

Awww, the White hand of Saruman is gone off the shield

Change looks good though, and the cloak I feel it gonna be wicked.

Heh, I remember you doing the Paladin last year, it was some of your best works. This guy is shaping up to be the same, the family crest looks really good already. The freehand is great Knightley, well done. Glad to hear you've got yourself really into the RP sessions!

@Solar - Thanks, I still need to do a lot of work on my highlighting metals, I get very complacent and make to many mistakes with them.

@Mad - I know, I had grand designs on how it would have looked, I guess this one will have to do eh

@WarbossDakka - Yeah, there is so much planning and content creation involved, I only had an inkling of what I was getting myself into!

Update: Pretty much finished the shield and cloak

Simply beautiful Knightley. These D&D minis are an excellent change of pace from the usual GK work. Though I suppose it's no coincidence that he's a paladin, no?

Brilliant work all round, your crispy goodness goes well on the D&D figure. Nice squiggles. Be nice to see the fancy colourful first letter squiggles on the shield though.

Looking pretty ace Knightley.

One bit bit of feedback from myself is regarding the symbol on the cloak. The bottom shield part of it seems to blend in with the cloak colour too much and it's not really differentiated.

Could be the photo washing the colours together, or maybe thats the effect your after, just thought I'd make mention of it.

The shield looks awesome though

Cheers.

@Graven - Thanks man!

@Gits - Cheers

@Justaerin - You could say it was planned, but my mate, like me, loves paladins so he was always going to play one.

@Cam - Good point, I had thought about doing that, but couldn't decided on a colour to use, thoughts?

@Mad - Totally the washed out whites, there *should* be a dark line to separate out the sheild from cloak, and the cloak *should* be a fraction darker

@WarbossDakka - Thank you!

Update: Finished the Front to allow him to be used in the game over the weekend, my mate loves it!

@Zerg - Thanks dude!

Update: On to model number two, this one is a half elf Sorcerer, I got a few guidelines from my friend, She wanted white hair with a slight silver sheen, the character is low born, so wouldn't have a lot of fancy clothes and has blue eyes.

@AshNomad - Welcome to the blog! stick around I have some small plans for this crossbow

Update: painted a necklace as it wasn't an option when creating the mini, did some first stage stuff on the hair and a first layer on the pants

@Mad - No worries, it was an intense game for sure! I look forward to your write up

@Ice - Always glad to see you posting Ice, perhaps in a few weeks your fluff blog may get a post eh?

Update:
I had an action packed weekend, Friday night had the adventures of my D&D gaming group that I DM for, they left the night on a cliff hanger and they are already hounding me for the next game!
Saturday had my normal Airsoft in the morning, however had a game Vs Mad in the afternoon, A very bloody battle, units getting removed from the table each turn, left on a state of flux which I'll let him explain in his Battle Report, Sunday had the morning spent with the little one, checking out the new house we brought and taking measurements (trying to find a good place for the gaming table!) and in the afternoon an impromptu game against another friend, Orks vs Necrons... I'd like to say I did well, but I would by lying, I managed to kill 3 full units of Orks, and I was left with 1 tomb blade, 4 immortals, 4 warriors, my Lord and 3 Spyders at the end. His dice were on fire, mine were on ice, so many failed saves everywhere and his first turn was brutal (shock attack gun got boxcars on its first shot and produced a large blast vortex right on top of my warlord and 20 warriors. It all went down hill from there.

Oh and painting wise the bone colour is basically done

The gray scheme for these guys is growing on me as I see more of your squads. It's always interesting to see someone paint something differently to how everyone else paints it. Personally I'm too attached to the fluff to do that, which is why my Dark Angels are the standard green, with black Ravenwing and bone Deathwing. Looking forward to seeing the finished product (complete with squiggles of course!).

Echoing Zerg here, coming into the home stretch with another fine group of greys!
It is an excellent change of pace to see them truly grey, and not silver. I'd almost reserve that color for ranking officers.

Nearly time for the be-squiggling? Perfect time to say they're looking rather good, Knightley - going with minimal lightning on the force weapons this time?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/05/14 23:07:28

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - I completely agree with you, I am a big stickler for fluff, however when I tried painting silver, it was the worst experience I ever had and couldn't stomach doing a full army like that, it did necessitate a change, and while its not perfect I do like it a lot

@Justaerin - I have a change of colour for the "elites" being that dark grey and for GK high rankers they get that treatment *cough* Draigo *cough*

@Dysartes - The Squiggling has completed, see below and yes, these ones aren't getting a full on energy blade mix like the Purifiers.

Update: And with that another squad is completed

Yet another lovely squad pumped out, great work, personally like the grey, no idea about the fluff, just know that this army is spectacular, and squiggly.

Purifiers and strike squad look ace Knightley!

Glad you have recovered from the Birthday weekend

Post by: Knightley

@Cam - "spectacular, and squiggly." I need to get this in my signature somehow

@Graven - I suspect I'll finish this push prior to 200 pages, so an army shot will happen before then. But a recap could work, go through the highlights of the past 7 years I've been posting here.... 7 years on this blog, thats a large number now.

@Mad - Thanks dude, yeah took me longer than normal, I must be getting old

Update: Not breaking stride, onto the the next squad! base colours starting to be applied

All have a different pose... nice.

I see the back right one has parchment, squiggle time!

What's that on the front right one that the sword is stuck into, I can't quite make it out.

I do like the pose of the guy on the right of the front row - I'm guessing he be a plastic Knight(ley)?

@Mad - Thanks man, the front right has a nurgle demon head on the ground comes part of the new GK range (I had to include it in this squad)

@Dysartes - Partly, the body is the old metal, but the sword arm and should pad are new plastic

@Justaerin - Course not, I'm on the home stretch now, not many models left to go!

Update: finishing up the base colours and started with some washes

@Warboss_Waaazag - Thanks man!

@Gits - Cheers

@Zerg - I know right, there isn't much left to do with the GK's! but there is heaps for my marines

@Cam - I sometimes worry it gets repetitive which is why I did a couple of years of randoms (Tau, Necrons and Chaos Demons)

Update: Been working on 5 Paladins throughout the days each has a different start to see what is quicker to do

Is it making it harder to do the whole squad when you do different stages on each one? It would seem that it'd be hard to keep track. Plus a lot of switching paints. They look good so far though!

@Aetare - Welcome to the blog! thanks for the comment

@Azazelx - As soon as these guys are done you'll get an army shot

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/05/31 20:27:22

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - I have been consistent over the 6 years I've been painting these guys, I broke up the boredom by doing some commission models and painting a number of other armies in the mean time (Repainting Dark Angels and Ultramarines, Necron Army, Tau army and some demons)

@Gits - Thanks man, I believe I'm over half way now, so its 'downhill' from here, as they say

@Dysartes - Yes, looking at them all on the table does give a wide range of squiggles, I feel like my early squiggles were a lot more random and made some of the earlier models quite busy.

@Cam - 12 pots! Hah, I estimate 18

@WarbossDakka - Thank you!

@Solar - There is something in the works around that, (Hint: see the commission in the to do list below)

@Moltar - Hehe, I see what you did there

@DJSC - Welcome back? I got the titan over a year ago and had planned to do it for the big 200 page reveal however, once I got started cleaning and prepping I just kept going with painting it.

Update: So I have the next push models selected, in the Fourteenth push you'll see:
1 x Chaplain
1 x Praetor conversion to captain (Terminator)
1 x Captain made from High Marshal Helbrecht conversion (building)
1 x Ironclad Dreadnaught
5 x Sternguard
5 x Tactical marines (incl Flamer)
5 x Scouts
1 x Attack Bike
2 x Grav Bikers
1 x Stalker
1 x Old One Eye (Commission)
1 x Cypher (New)
1 x CM Voldus

So now is mould lining which, is one of the most boring things about this hobby! Sorry no pictures :(

I've got the same problem with some of my photos. They look fine on my PC and even in previews on WP, but then when they publish they seem lighter/a bit washed out.

Regardless, these guys look very cool. The hoods add something quite different to them. Are they just regular Paladins, or something else?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh man! That is one hell of an army!

If they're still all laid out like that, could we get some close-ups of the various squads and groups and aspects of the army while they're all out there en masse? About 15-20 photos should do. (I'm not joking!)

Update: So again no pictures, I moved house over the weekend (Queens birthday weekend so 3 days) and everything is a cr@p shoot in terms of modelling time. Gone is a space for the gaming table, which makes me sad, however custom ordering a large dining room table, about 6' by 4' i'd say

You need very thin dark lines between the fingers, it'll help give the hands definition which they're lacking. Make a fist yourself and you'll see what I mean. I like it though. Nice work.

Looking sweet Knightley, though I'd also add a dilute purple wash to the face, as it makes it look more realistic (if that's what you're going for). It looks like a fun model to paint, probably a nice change of pace from Power Armour.

@Gits - Good point well raised, will see if I can manage that!

@WarbossDakka - I may not do that at this point, adding purple at the last stage would mean a complete reset of painting the face and I am happy with how it looks at this stage

@Azazelx - Not really, this model is bloody tiny compared to the marine heads, he would look very captain america prior to the super serum, but in reverse (small head, big body)

Update: More details added, I'll see what I can do about adding a darkness to the fist as well care of Gits

He's coming along really nicely. The added details really improve the figure. Shame about the head size, though, I wonder if there's a place that can do Marine-sized heads? I could build myself leading my various armies. Perhaps with different haircuts.

New models look like they'll be fun to paint! Also, what size magnets did you use for the Sternguard combi-weapons? I'd guess 1/16 x 1/16", but maybe a little smaller? Seems like it might be harder to do that my Tau battlesuits' weapons.

@Gits - Thanks

@Azazelx - Gah! my fingers are still recovering!

@Zerg - 2mm x 1mm rare earth magnets, I did a bunch of magnets for the Tron Tau I painted a couple of years ago, I do not advise it as it was such a pain to do!

Post by: Knightley

@Azazelx - Kind of, my space marine tactical's have the DW bolter and pad, but aren't technically from their codex, I just wanted cool unique marines

@Swordwind - My god, it has been 5 years, good to see you back, will you be back for good? I bet there was a lot to get through

@Cam - You and me both, I do like building though and I can totally see why people have many models unpainted!

Update: So working on the commission first, Old One Eye, scheme is for my brother who has this blog here - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/719561.page
He's been a little remiss on posting, but has a decent army done so far. Looking to getting some games with him when my new table arrives.

On to the model then, I Primed white (I swear my Army Painter White primer is a bad batch, it was horrible to use! Then used the Air Brush to do a off white first layer, then a top down pure white highlight (in these pics I can hardly tell :S) then set to work doing a couple of thin black layers on the carapace

Old One Eye should be a nice break after painting all those Marines. Although I'm curious as to where or how he'll get some squiggles...

Post by: Knightley

@Solar - Thank you.

@WarbossDakka - I'll jam a red wash over the red, that may help add better shadows, what do you think?

@Mad - Hahah, My brother wanted a better painted model than the rush jobs he wanted to do

@Zerg - Really struggling to squiggle this guy, I may do that under a foot, then only I would know... hehe

Update: applied the wash to the body, added a lot more depth to the skin

Well, it is old one eye... you could do a little bit of squiggles on his carapace somewhere from a human who has found the corpse and tagged it in the past before he got back up

He's turning out good so far! I've always been kind of interested in Tyranids myself since they are like the Zerg from StarCraft (who were inspired by the Tyranids after all), but I really don't need yet another army. The closest I'll get in the near term to having my own army of Nids will be the Genestealers from Lost Patrol. I do enjoy seeing other people's different schemes for the bugs, though!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/05 20:25:44

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - Tell me about it, I have so many model for Grey Knights and my Space Marines to really pick up another army. However t=Tyranids can be quite a bit of fun to paint, totally different

Update: On to dark blue (not dark dark blue) and applied a little less liberally on top of the dark dark blue

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Wasn't easy and I really lucked out on the lock, All the ones I had seen previous were very 'aggressive' on how far up the carapace the colours went, I wanted something a little less colourful and, had I done it again would have made it even smaller.

@Cam - Thanks! been a long slog to get to 200, other blogs I started along side of are nearing 300 now, I'm not worried, I know my place

@Azazelx - Oh yes, my brother has a largish army, no bases completed yet, but who know maybe in the future.

@Zerg - Thank you for the kind words

@Mad - Oh you saw that did you there were a few hints in some of the earlier pics I had them all done, they will get a coat of paint, but not this push I think.

@Graven - Thanks bro! good to be part of the 200 club (Is that even a thing?)

Update: Base prime/colour applied, red base started

Well done on the carapace, it isn't easy getting those streaks looking natural like you have. Also I've never really seen one of those Hunters in action, can't wait to see it painted. Well done on 200 pages too!

@Azazelx - Cheers, I've not played one before and I had this one for 7th as a reply to the flying hive tyrants I kept on facing.

@Mad - Would expect nothing less! To be honest though, not sure this vehicle will be that useful in this edition.

Update: Spent a bit longer than an hour tonight doing all the edge highlighting, always reinforces why I hate painting tanks.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/12 01:15:48

Post by: ZergSmasher

Yeah, edge highlighting is a pain on a model with so many, well, edges! That's why I drybrush them. Saves a lot of time, looks okay, and any mess is not too hard to clean up.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/12 20:05:57

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - I wish I had done that at the first model, and not at the 235th model would have been so much easier and quicker.

Update: Just did the red today, been feeling under the weather so painting is a bit of a chore atm

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/13 06:02:54

Post by: Mad..

Having recently done some edge highlighting a leman russ tank... I understand the "fun" you just had, still it's pretty nice and easy to do and makes things look a lot better, so worth it in the end.

I've been meaning to ask what colour you edge highlight your reds with? I like how it comes together.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/13 14:20:36

Post by: WarbossDakka

I don't tend to drybrush vehicles because even if they look okay on the edges, it makes the flatter areas suffer for it - especially on boxier vehicles like what the SM and Guard have. Edging bigger models do take much longer, but produce a much better result in the end which I think ends up being totally worth it.

Nice stuff, Knightley! That red turned out great on that 'nid! Tank looking great too

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/07/13 20:18:42

Post by: Knightley

@Mad - Agreed, the look of edge highlighted vs dry brushed certainly has its benefits. Regarding the Red, I use blood red for the first edge highlight then I use an old vomit brown for the extreme highlights.

@WarbossDakka - When I first started I did a heavy dry brush over all my models, I hadn't picked up the nuances of dry brushing so it came out looking very very chalky, if I had the knowledge I have now, I would have still done it that way but done it much much better.

@Moltar - Thanks mate!

Update: Tank basically done, Just need to glue on the treads, I haven't put any time in to my new lighting set up so no end pictures for a while
