Nurgle Imperial Knight finally finished... @ 2014/02/22 22:41:58

Post by: McManiak

Hi guys, this thread is to run alongside my White Scars Task force WIP as a mix up to both keep my interest in the scars and also get this heavily converted army up and running rather than sitting in a box waiting for some love.

I have bought most of the list below and have started to build some of it already. Nothing has any paint on it yet and I am still working in a colour scheme that will be simple yet also one I am happy with.

It's very much a nurgle only army with probably some Death Gaurd in there so that I can use them in 30k if I go down that route.

Similar to my Scars blog I have put a poll on here for you to vote on what to build next and I will build as I am painting the scars so it keeps me happy. I have started off with a few WIP photos that will give you an idea of where I am going. http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-81825-38457_Nurgle%20CSM.html

The Forgefiend may have nurglings coming out of the front of the sac yet or I'll just green stuff it up.

The reaver has got lots more green stuff to go including having some spawn travelling round his body. The mourngul coming out of the crotch was something I am particularly proud of, it just fits well.

This is what I have at some stage or other

Reaver Titan
Typhon & Typhus
Grave wardens and Death Shroud
Winged DP
Mammon
Great Unclean One
20 Plague Bearers
28 Plague Marines
3 Heldrakes (1 on will be on a building like Megatron in the first Transformers movie, 1 on a Valkyrie like in the codex and not sure about other)
2 Forgefiends
3 Blight Drones
4 Rhinos
3 Vindicators
3 Deimos Predators
Warp smith, Dark Apostle and Lord
105 Zombies
3 obliterators and 3 mutilators

Still got to get a Warhound too

Loads more to come and all C&C is welcome as are suggestions, hints and tips.

Thanks guys...

That converted Fiend is looking good, I look forward to this one progressing. Also, I can't wait to see the Drake vs Valk if it's anything like the codex art.

So Nurgle fans........

I have had my fill of Scars this week and fancy a break.

This weekend will see me assemble at least one Heldrake (prbably the one gripping the tower) and I will endeavor to take photos of the rest of what have so far (although a lot of it is standard build at the moment).

Wondering whether the drakes would look good in a battered rusted pre heresey Death Gaurd colour?? What are your thoughts people?

Nurgle Imperial Knight finally finished... @ 2014/02/28 14:10:23

Post by: Nevelon

Death Guard is white/cream with green right? How would you break up the drake? Do all the raised bits in a rusted metal, with the recessed bits mostly white, with green as an accent color somewhere? As a color palette I think it would work, the hard part is figuring out what goes where.

I might do one of the two “shoulders” layers over the wings green. Either the top on or the middle, not both. For the wings two options stand out. Either just do the middle or rear wing green, or mask off some/all of the wingtips and do them green. Or stripes.

Of course the best way to paint heldrakes is with AA fire, and then use them to paint the landscape. You filthy heretic.

Nev, you make me chuckle.

I was thinking of doing a green toxic gas/flame on wings and DG on the body and head. Going to clip and petrify the wings loads aswell. Will make more sense after I put a picture up I hope.

I'd love to do more! How ever, i'm restricted by a few things:
-distance (I dont drive). A few people I met at Storm of Iron said they'd be happy to de-tour to pick me up for any future events, providing it's not ridiculously out of their way. They're from nottingham, so it's basically anything in the south they'll be able to give me a ride to.
-university. March is going to be rammed with work (5 courseworks and 4 weeks to do it). Not to mention may/june when end of year exams start.

I've not really shopped around for up coming tournaments, but if there is one worth doing over easter, i'm down.

£100 for the ticket for 2 people, so £50 each, isnt bad.

I fancied it because I havent been to a tournament of any sort before, so I was hoping to get my friend emissary1701 to come along for the ride.

But bills and a broken car have thwarted any plans that I had.

Cheers mate, hope the problems are notr that bad. 40k world problems like rifts in the imaterium seem simple compared to REAL life sometimes.

Started on Heldrake number 1 last night then realised that I had made a schoolboy error and not charged my dremel. There is something both satisfying and scary about chopping and scarring a model (more scary on an expensive titan) but will put some pics up this evening or tomorrow. Built some zombie bodies too but will put heads and arm to them over the next few days.

Got a real sense of enjoyment (sorry Nev) being back on the 'dark side' last night and am looking forward to some progress. May even throw some effort into the titan soon too, although my Thunderhawk on the white scar blog needs to be finished first I think!

The big problem is stopping myself buying a couple of Knights. Wouldn't use them in game but like the models and have some nice conversion ideas.

I don’t blame you at all. While I love the loyalist side, we do tend to be straightjacketed into doing things the right and proper way. The evil side gets to have all the fun on the modeling bench. While I’m doing a simple head swap, or kit-bashing a combi weapon, you get to replace some guys leg with a mass of tentacles and graft a bolt pistol onto his head. Every time I see a chaos or ork kit, I feel the pull the pull of plasticard and greenstuff; the potential to embrace the change and kitbash something fun and unique.

And then I shrug off those dark whispers. Unlike you, you weak-willed heretic. When I’m basking in the Emperor’s light after a lifetime of service, your soul will be the plaything of your dark gods. So enjoy your fun now.

(Back when I was still working on both 40k and fantasy armies, my undead and warriors of chaos let me scratch the modeling itch. Evil in fantasy, good in 40k)

But how can I compete with the size/scale of your nurgly goodness?

And that really sucks about using GW models... That model is awesome, and it's a real shame you cant use it.

As signature suggests I have approx 10k of points so will not be a quick build and blog. Those of you who have visited my White Scars blog will know that whilst I can acheive quick resluts it gets me down so I am going to take my time. They are not earmarked for any tournament (yet) and are more about the conversion than the playability.

That would be interesting indeed. Not heard anything from FW yet myself but that means nothing.

Last night saw me getting frustrated with wings and claws.

But you guys asked for it so here it is..............

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've not scarred the body up yet or made the 2nd wing so will be on with them tonight.

To get the wing and claw to fit the pose I have had to do some reconstruction of the joints and use a chunk of GS (thankfully it adds to the Nurgle feel) just to get the dynamics right. I am going to add a touch of GS to the wings once complete with pustules etc but need to see it all together to judge were these will go.

As for the head I am in a dilema so as always will ask for advice from you guys.

The standard Heldrake neck is fine but is bending the wrong way for my model. I can't heat and bend it the way I want so was toying with using a Terrorgheist neck from WHFB. I have a Mawloc jaw that I am using with the head and something quite cool IMO for the the head.

Should I go with the dragon neck or just accept that the darke one is not perfect? Or do you guys know something different?

Both of the wings and the body are magnetised for transport and also could be used in a different pose if needed.

Base is going to be a toxic spillage theme across the army so will make more sense when done.

C&C so far welcome as always

...climbing a tower...?! AWESOME!

It looks great so far mate. What exactly is wrong with the neck?

Nurgle Imperial Knight finally finished... @ 2014/03/02 14:11:11

Post by: McManiak

it bends up if you know what I mean for the gliding pose. If I could have it the other way it would look more sinister and 'lurking' on the building as if he was peering round/over the edge.

The Terrorgheist neck bends the other way but is much more animal like as opposed to the mechanical feel of the drake.

The idea came from watching Transformers and seeing a Decepticon on the building with his wings down around the skyscraper...

Nurgle Imperial Knight finally finished... @ 2014/03/02 18:54:25

Post by: Zambro

You could always use the terrorgheist's neck, and break up some of the armour pannels from the helldrakes neck and mash them together like it's been 'absorbed' into the flesh. Some GS would also make it more convincing.

and i'm glad someone got something good out of the transformers movies. lol!

First 5 zombies are done and I thought id see what you guys think at this point. I've got 60 IG helmets to make the hads and will pick up plenty more legs. The WHFB zommbie bodies give the model their dynamic look but obv dont have IG fatigues on.

Is this a problem?

Do they look silly?

Should I just use zombie heads with IG bodies and helmets?

Thoughts and suggestions please people

Yeah, nightmare. Not got all the bits for the 105 yet but can prob knock 80 together. Fortunately painting them will be relatively simple.

Back on the drake at the mo.

You can always buy a box or two of IG and mix the bits with those that you already have. I did that. Zombie torso with IG legs etc. Looks good and helps extend the theme.

They look good though.

Something about the zombies proportions seem off. Might just be the camera angle, but I’m getting a bobble head vibe from them. The helmets seem unnaturally perched on their heads. Have you thought of just taking a hobby knife and/or drill to some normal IG heads to zombify them up a bit?

The drake is looking very nice, love the tower base idea.

Post by: Ignatius-Grulgor

With zombies the GW ones just don't cut the mustard, it's a shame your local is a GW store really otherwise there'd be a world of alternatives. The guard shoulder pads help if you can get something like them as the join to the torso is just off somehow with the upper arms somehow being above the shoulder on the GW models. Also might be an idea to incorporate a bit more regular guard and use greenstuff etc to vary them up. Aside from that some very pretty bits in progress, and it's always good to see a drake without the horrid flight stand!

Nurgle Imperial Knight finally finished... @ 2014/03/03 16:03:42

Post by: McManiak

Thanks guys, you confirmed my thoughts. The heads on the GW zombies just are a bit cartoony and whilst giving the zombie/undead pose I think they just dont look right. I can't convince myself with them.

The helnets are niot meant to go on a head and trying to trim the zombie head down is a PITA so may give it up as a bad idea. I will keep the 5 as in 105 they will blend in and I will try a load of other methods. Only need to put 20 or so for GW use so may look at some non GW ones too.

In my mind I wanted to create the effect of just turned gaurdsmen so maybe Nev may be correct and I could just mutilate some gaurdsmen.

There is gonna be enough of them that the blend could work.

Was initially for an Armies on Parade board that I have in my mind but I will leave the details of that for a much further date.

To get that recently turned guardsmen look have you thought about combining normal guard with bits from the empire flagellants set? There are some really crazed guys in that box with lots of bear arms which should match up well. It's just a hunch but check it out I think it might work for you

Had a look at them mate but they don't work fir me I'm afraid. Gonna mix up both Guard and zombies in mismatched ways to get the total number up.

Well, I promised some update of pics and tonight I've been working hard on my drake.

Not finished quite yet as I've got to do the claws and melt/bend the ribbons on the head, put the flamer in and the side wings somehow need fitting.

Tail pieces are from a mauler fiend and half the neck from the terrorgheist kit.

There has been a LOT of clipping and re posing involved in everything from the wings to the neck but I'm really happy with the result so far.

Will hopefully do the claws tomorrow and secure the head and flamer.

I'll also put some pics of the separate pieces so you can see where the joins are etc.

Finally, apologies for the sideways pics but my iPad messes with me from time to time. I'll edit the photos when I'm in work tomorrow and have them the right way.

Anyway, I'm tired and going to bed so I hope that satisfies some of you heretics out there and gives the loyalists something to worry about

Night all...

That water seems awfully clean for something soaking nurgle bits. I kinda expected to see greenish-brown goop seeping out of the models to contaminate the water.

“Signed off work” sounds ominous. It might just be an over-the-pond terminology thing, but I hope you are doing well over there. At the very least, enjoy your hobby time!

Cheers for the thought mate. I've had really bad headaches for 9 weeks now and had several checks, scans etc with no result. Been signed off sick with some new pills so will have bouts of time when feeling ok to do some hobby work...

Maybe the contagion of Nurgle has infected me and is slowly turning me to the gods....

Such is the price of heresy.

Oof on the headaches. My brother-in-law has them not infrequently. His are often food triggered. MSG is a big one, but there are other things he avoids. Makes cooking for family gatherings fun. You might want to look into adjusting your diet if the drugs don’t work.

Feel better!

2nd Heldrake is almost done. I forgot to fill his belly in which i'll do tomorrow then he is also ready to be primed and sit next to his mate.

The idea came from Nevelon saying about lifting a tank and I was going to use a russ or something similar until the taurox kit came out and made my mind up for me.

I'm happy with the pose and just need to paint hime before guing all the various parts together. Wings are magnetized for transport but the rest will be glued to give stiffness in the balance.

C&C as always please and thanks for looking. Will endeavor to get number 3 done soon.

Even without it's tracks thee Spartan is a great looking model. Some serioous warping on the front tho to be fixed.

When are forgeworld going to realise that it's the sculpts we love, not the resin. Plastic is a much better option for casting. Costs less to produce and would have less returns/replacements. Plus lighter too.

Anywho the model looks good and will get primed soon.

Still got to do some test models for my colour scheme

Dunno yet. I'm getting really hacked off with FW. The thundehawk has huge gap too. They offer to replace the parts but not the time and material you used getting to tge broke stage.
The arrogance of the company bemuses me tbh.

I love the sculpts but at the price they charge it needs to be better.

Agreed.

It was only after I got my first FW stuff (the vulture and thunderbolt), that I realised you need a lot of modelling skills for it. Through these two models, i've cut more down to fit than I have compared to my entire marine army that came before it. I've also learnt how to effectively use GS to fill gaps (something i've not really needed to know, until now).

Never the less, with a bit of work it still looks great.

Right so I've not updated for a bit after starting to make some progress with the builds.
I have nothing new to show but did pick some MORE FW bits up yesterday.
I had a refund from my thunderhawk in vouchers so put them to good use and bought....

A Chaos Warhound Titan with plasma and laser destructor.
A Plague Hulk
Some Plague Ogres (to become mutilators at some point)
Another unit of Grave Wardens.

I'll be brutally honest and say that the Warhound aint even getting touched for the foreseeable future and the focus at the moment is very much my Scars getting finished.

I still intend to build some bits as I paint the scars but am working out what paint scheme to do my Death Guard. I want to acheive the look FW have done on their 30k models but don't know how they got there.

Any ideas?

Anyway just a quick update that may spur me on to build some more...

On the Forgeworld website under downloads they have a Legion painting guide.

Granted they may need to update the names of the paints, but I am sure you could find the matching colours, if you don't already have them.

Here is the link to the download:

Hope that helps

Cheers Dantay I'll have a look.

Don't worry Z I still have my hawk but after some serious arguing and complain about the shrinkage on the kit they have refunded it but let me keep the one I've built and painted so far.

I will be able to take a mold of the back and cast my own piece to go into the gap and then with a but of luck you'll never notice it. So ultimately it was a free hawk. I'm a lucky guy and they are a poor company. ... ,)

WOW.

I know GW/FW are flawless in terms of customer service, but imo this is a new level. Giving you £400 worth of vouchers, crazy... Makes me wonder just how much money they make and give away in refunds.

Anyway, it's nice to see you've not forgotten your Nurglies
The plague ogres are great models

Been a few weeks since I got my hands nurgly so today im gonna be building. Just gonna do basic stuff that doesnt need conversion (at this point) so that I can make a dent in the box and have plenty ready to paint.
I packed my airbrush away for the tournament last week so my partner could have her dining room back for a week and will use the non paint opportunity to get rid of some sprues snd make some space.
I'll post either as I finish each piece or at the end of the day.

Things to build are

Great unclean one
Typhon
Grave wardens x 2 units
Death shroud
4 rhinos
Plague marines
Plague bearers
Bucket load of zombies

I'll see what
I can do. There is more but it either needs the resin washing or some major conversion and my head aint into that today.

Got a bit done yesterday.

Washed the 3 deimos predators, the plague hulk and ogres plus some more grave wardens.

Built up 21 plague marines (7 more to do)
Plague bearers who will be getting painted very soon
Nurgle dp
Some terms and a warpsmith

I aslo tidied up my hobby room to make space for everything and stop the better half moaning about the mess.

Hey guys, this post is gonna be on all of my blogs as I think its a more than worthy cause.

A whole community of 40+ painters are putting together the 4th company ultramarines and raffling it off for the help for hero's charity so please taka a look at the link and buy some tickets. Over £7000 was raised last year for a salamanders army that 1 lucky winner got so who know it could be you this time.

I am building and painting a tactical squad and rhino for it and will run a blog to track progress. I'm not sure if I will do it as part of my scars blog or a seperate one but will also be running a youtube vlog to help promote the cause.

I'm not normally one for begging or pushing on people but believe this is worth it. Let me know your thoughts or keep me posted as you get tickets and I'll feed it all back to Nick (IDIC BEER) who is running this amazing project.

Here is the link, thanks guys http://www.idicbeer.co.uk/p/help-for-heroes-ultramarines.html

Hey guys, no post for a while as I've been committed elsewhere and also been concentrating on my YouTube channel.

I have however started work on a Nurgle imperial knight and here is a link to the first video

Nurgle Imperial Knight Conversion WIP: http://youtu.be/ZlJ13xjIyDk

I am going to put stills on here too and would really appreciate your feedback as I go along.

I've reversed the leg joints on the knight and now painted the basic metalic colour, I have also made the head for him (bit blurry) and low and behold....

...I HAVE PUT PAINT TO A NURGLE MODEL......

What do you guys think of the colour? I don't want full on 40k plague marine and also don't want pre heresy ivory ceramite so am aiming for a mid heresy damaged look.

Please let me know your thoughts....

More soon

Bit more work on the knight. The legs are done and all rusted now plus I have today built the ManReaper for him. I figured that the chainsword wasn't suitable so with a but if greenstuff, tubes and a few layers of plasticard came to this. All the armour panels are now chipped too and waiting for wash and detail paint.

C&C is valued as always guys pls...

I figured the best way to learn how to do the flesh/decay on my knight was practice on some plague bearers so thats exactly what I did. These are actually 2 different colour schemes and I will use both in the army as I progress....

They look pretty rotted away You ever thought about using Bugman's glow, Flesh tone wash and then following a green wash final? Did that with my Nurgle Lord and he came out looking very sickly grey that gave off a look of dead skin.

Been a while sorry guys but I have been busy with new job and when and where possible I have been rattling through papa nurgles minions.

Here are a few WIP pics of what is on the table.

I decided to spread accross lots of units at once rather than focusing on just one (I need them ready for a tournament).

Knight is ALMOST finished and just need to do his base (hopefully this weekend......)

We have, 48 Plague Bearers, 3 Plague Drones, Great Unclean One and a Plague Hulk.

Cheers guys

Wow, very nice. One jarring thing is the plants in the base. The whole mini is grimy, gritty, and grungy. And then you have those two happy, cheerful, bright green plants. Growing out of a pool of sludge. They should be brown and droopy. They detract from the work you did on the knight, which is amazing. Rather then accenting it, like a good base should. And the rest of the base does.
