Hello everyone!

I think we need a Terraria thread!

I have currently collected all the way to beetle armor and I have the Scythe, And paladin armor.

Anyone want to share their builds? (Also Luna update is coming!)

I saw this game being played for the first time over at my buddies house. It looks pretty neato. I might check it out next paycheck.

It's not bad for a 2D version of Minecraft with more RPG elements. I like the wave fights but you really need a team for that. Progression is rather simplistic but has at least a stopgap to the hard-mode stuff so at least there's varying difficulty.

The last thing they put out was the Fishing update so that kills time if want to kill it

And Duke Fishron. Don't forget him. He is quite a hard boss. And not a joke.

ITs quite an enjoyable game. Reminds me of old school RPGs. But it has far more content than Minecraft.

Its more fun and you can get through tiers of armor pretty quickly if you put your mind to it. It took me a few months to get hardmode because I really didn't want to rush. And then I got into hardmode and immediately died. Took me another few months to beat all the bosses up to plantera, and then the hunt for the greatest weapons began. (The Scourage, Vampire Knives, Frost hydra began)

That took me a few weeks to get the keys except for one, The scourage. It took me a day to get the scourage. (I was very lucky) It is probably the most OP Weapon I have ever used XD.

It's always a cute little 2 or 3 distraction for me and buddy whenever they update. The core premise and solid and it is quite charming in a way. Still It never quite comes off feeling like a complete experience. Like it's got a good volume of content it's just lacking a bit in the depth department. Feels a bit like a prototype for something greater in some ways.

I like it. But I still prefer minecraft. For Minecraft when you get bored there are a zillion mods to add and either play around with, or to play as it's own game. Mods like Pixelmon and Orespawn add in so much content, or just even change the entire game so much, that's it's generally impossible to get bored with.

Yeah I am the opposite I enjoy RPGS in general and think they are probably one of the best things about gaming.

I really enjoy Terraria, though I'm having a tough time "getting into it" again. Probably has something to do with wanting to terraform an entire world to be "perfect" and easy to move from biome to biome for fishing...

Eh, someday I'll probably do it.

I don't rush Terraria when I do play (I prefer building to the more "gamey" aspects) so it takes me a long time to actually get to the end-game stuff. I don't think I'm ready to go back to that yet. Maybe one day.

The end game stuff is actually quite cool. But currently hardmode is a joke. Its not really that hard if you rush to adamanatium or hallowed sets.

It's... interesting!

Some of the new items seem to drop way, way too often. Good for gold, not so good otherwise. Some of the new monsters are pretty nice looking, and I've noticed that vultures and jellyfish have new sounds, which I like.

Are we avoiding spoilers in this thread, or no?

Ah, yes. The sensible and obvious thing to do. No wonder I forgot it.

In that case

Spoiler:
I was surprised and kind of pleased to see new, unique monsters for the blood moon. It's a nice touch. And I've found underground minecart tracks, and the underground houses now look like actual houses, with stairs and supports and things. Lots of nice little improvements all over the place. And of course, the new desert underground seems fun. Antlion mandibles will no longer be one of the rarest resources. Though I do wonder how hard mode will affect it.

I got killed while hunting down some platinum ore. I've been playing for a long time, but yeah getting killed by the new mobs was kind of bs.

Honestly, I would have been disappointed if it didn't kill me.

I notice they've got more in the Crimson now! Crimson goldfish, for one, just like corrupt goldfish. And a version of the spiky vine things. The Crimson's still easier to breeze through in the early game when compared to the Corruption, though.

At least, I think it is. A skeleton merchant in the underground. Sold bone arrows, bone candles, some basic stuff, and a counterweight. Which is for yo-yos, I guess.

Seems that new NPC is in marble layers along with a lot of the new enemies. But they never settle in a builidng, they're like the traveling merchant. I hate the damn medusae though.

Oh man, the marble layer enemies. I wasn't even sure where I was when I first got to one of those areas. So I was just walking along, checking out the sights, and then bam! Instant death. (Due to falling, mainly, but also the enemy).

Marble looks real nice as a building material, though.

The summoner is the hardest class to play as. As I have discovered recently. You have to get a ton of defense and regeneration for health or else you are going to melt pretty quickly.

Yeah, it is very tricky to do. I normally do a ranger oath, because I love the guns, and don't forget the stake launcher. That is fantastic to use.

I found him in a mushroom cave the first time, marble the second. Maybe he likes mini-biomes?

Did some experimenting with the banners. So it turns out that yes, a bunny banner will give you added defense against bunnies.

It turns out that yes, there is a corrupt bunny banner! So I guess the bunny banner only helps against the vicious attacks of normal bunnies.

It also turns out I could have looked at a wiki instead of spawning bunnies, corrupting them, and killing them, but that's hardly science.

Hey thanks for trying it out!

By the way guys.

My terrarian summoner. Is epic. I have been farming the final event. And I got something quite interesting. I keep losing to the final boss on purpose so that way I can wait for my friend to catch up to me. He's a melee class first time playing and we did a game together, I had a hardcore character at the beginning but he accidently summoned the destroyer on hardmode and i had to start over. :/

I'm glad they added more to the summoner class, it's much more fun to play one now considering before you just got tikis and that was that.

Also, I started a single player playthrough, featuring Leman Russ as my character, and I intend to build the Fang in the snow taiga biome (don't know it's official name).

I'm loving the Steam integration for multiplayer, it helps a lot for servers with just my friends and is an upgrade from the unreliable mix of LAN and hamachi. Also, is it just my crappy internet, or did hard mode get a bit laggier for connection/block lag issues.

Currently doing a normal playthrough with Meli. Been putting up every banner we get so far and after about 600+ slimes it's starting to seem like a mistake to do it but too many banners up so far to turn back.

Just got up to mythril set almost have titanium armour going with melee still since I like having the higher defense but been running around with two bananarangs as my main weapon for a while now. Keep trying to go ranged but doesn't feel as worth it once I get into the caves because boomerangs.

That said, melee is very hard to do with bosses, even with the increased defense, unless you do spears. It feels like your bananarangs don't 'do enough damage.

highly recommend the PC version over the PSvita version, more content on the PC version, and imo better controls.

Agreed, the PC version is generally superior, as the consolized and tablet versions are both lagging behind in content... and aim-assist for mining or construction is really bad when you want to build gak.

So i finally got started on the actual game... previously I had been fooling around with the tutorial... I'm definitely going to have to study up on stuff. I wasn't sure how the zombies were able to get into my little hut house thingy... then again it's just a simple thing like they show you in the tutorial: Stone blocks on one side... stone blocks on another... wood platforms for a 'roof'... and a wall.

Also got a star and put it in a jar... still have to see what that's for. One thing for sure... I'm definitely going to play this on a PC... the Vita just proves to be difficult to deal with.for a game like this.

Also I'd love to see what mods are available.

Oh also kind of OT or non-Terraria but is Starbound like this?

Starbound (imo) is far far worse. Exploring is alright, but the combat feels the same, but playing a ranged char is much harder due to using energy (which regens and is used for other things like double jumps) over actual ammo.

As for mods, iirc terraria isn't very mod compatible, but there are some out there.

Starbound is pretty similar. It's doing a bit with a storyline and I found it pretty fun, but I feel like the company has been shoving the paperwork aside foe updates, but promises some cool ways to progress through the game and if they come through it is going to be something that is worth the time for IMO. As of now, be cautious with the game, but I found it enjoyable, but settling isn't what it should be as of now.

Went to the steam store... took a gander at Terraria'screenshots... wow looks incredible compared to the vita... the price of $9.99 is pretty cool... Steam trading cards is a nice plus... one review mentions some numbers as far as stuff vs. Minecraft (basically Terraria has more 'stuff'; also mentions Minecraft might be the better sandbox but Terraria is the better adventure)... The nail in the coffin though (aside from having played and enjoyed it on the vita)? ... this one line from a review:

You can be a werewolf riding a unicorn while shooting rainbows from a gun.

I think I found my endgame goal for Terraria.

Purchase made.... now to build a hut that zombies can't jump into...

Being near it gives a mana regen buff, range is about a screen's width in radius. Certain items drain the mana bar on the right hand side.

Starbound is still in development. It's a complete game, but they're currently fleshing it out more and more. That said, Starbound does harvesting and liquid manipulation FAR better than terraria does, or ever will do.

Combat, really they're both good and it depends on taste.

Building, Starbound is far superior in terms of its UI for building, but Terraria has more content in that you have a reason to build more than one room other than "I'm out of space"-- Starbound is still developing its villager system and villager AI for human-built villages.

Starbound does have better events, though, because their events aren't just "random enemies invade your home area". The Floran Party is glorious, and their boss battles have arenas specifically built for each boss, making them far more enjoyable. The game could use more of them though, but that will come in time-- they have the enemies already coded and in game, but not accessible because they're developing the content of the arenas themselves.

One thing Terraria does better though I think is progression. Starbound needs more balance in its ore distribution, and the way it's set up you just sort of scout the surface of worlds to try to scoop up easily accessible ores. It's not a good system I feel. And the fact that ranged weapons are almost entirely given to one race of seven pisses me the feth right off.

Build a pit that's ~10+ blocks deep by the door. You can jump over it, but zombies won't, they'll walk into it, which also makes it easier to kill them if you want too.

So, I made a new guy, new world. I started walking and Queen Bee made a certain person's innards become outards. Anyone else have this happen?

No, though I can guess how that happened... doesn't make any sense though. Queen bee is a boss so it shouldn't have been summoned without you doing a specific thing...

The best, least spoileriffic way to explain it is that there's a special block in the bee hive area in a certain part of the map, that when broken summons the queen bee. There's actually several of these, I think. And apparently, the way map gen worked on your map, it was broken right at the start.

Ok, that makes sense. A shame that's one less hive in the world, but I can make do. Poor Inquisitor Mordrey (my character), he never stood a chance.

Got me a copper broadsword!

And I got lenses! I was looking for the recipe in my craft menu for goggles but they aren't there... but then I realized I have the recipe on the Vita but not on the PC...

But yay a broadsword!

Also died a bunch to some desert creatures... one was a grasshopper/locust thing and the other one was like a giant centipede/snake thing (I couldn't see it too well because I didn't have a torch out.

Be sure to build rooms that have artificial blocks and backgrouns, plus enough space, plus a light source, a chair, and a table, and a door.

Suggestion for the new player- get to mining. Always upgrade pickaxe first. Usually hammer next. Armor over weapons.

Why hammer? As a weapon? Eh. As for the endgame content yeah, pretty tough now, especially since they more or less prevent all non potion based healing (the nebula armor HP regen still works though)

Aside from the special hammer you get from beating the monster that enters you in to hardmode which is necessary for plot reasons, you really don't need to upgrade your hammer that much aside from the convenience of breaking down walls. Which, if you're building a tower rather than a bunker, is not that big of an issue.

I do agree on upgrade pickaxe first, as the faster you can upgrade your pickaxe the faster you can mine later ores. For me, it goes pickaxe, armor, weapon, other tools.

n0t_u and I beat the end game content together, including in expert mode.

I'm at gold right now for sword and pick axe... so hammer will eventually need to get up there? I stopped at a lead hammer because I found I wasn't using it. For my axe I forget where I'm at... maybe silver.

For armor, I'm at silver except for my helmet... for my head I've got some helm that helps with vision or something.

You use hammer for only a few things, and aside from breaking background walls, you only really need the one you get from a certain boss.

No, ignore hammers, eventually you'll get a special hammer from a boss (you'll know it when you get it). Other than that, there's not much point to it, I find a wooden hammer suits me easily.

Upgrading axes is annoying for me because it's not justifiable to worry about, but its annoying for when you do need wood because it takes forever to get it because my axe is two tiers behind everything else.

Funny thing, just after I posted that, I got yet another goblin invasion, my first one in hard mode. I guess it's better to have this one than any of the others, because I am super unprepared.

Maybe less so now, as I got "godly shadowflame knives" out of it. That's a new one for me.

Spoiler:
I noticed there was armor for throwing damage, but it isn't as developed as any of the other classes, which I found odd because they announced this to be the final major update, so does anyone have an explanation for this besides that it's a bit of a sick joke, more so than removing hunger and adding tons of food options in starbound.

Because we were lacking a Terraria thread @ 2015/09/02 22:47:49

There's several options for throwing-weapon based armor, actually, but throwing weapons sort of die off in the mid-game.

Also, the food options in Starbound are consumable buffs now.

I was only aware of one armor set for throwing, so thank you for that. I think it'd be cool for it to be able to go throughout the entire game, but we already have a nice bit of classes, I guess.

And, yeah, I knew they gave buffs, but its still a bit of a slap to the face to me.
