If you're just running IG, dont forget the HB Alpharius can be used as Gunnery Sergeant Harker.

Post by: Alpharius
Well, actually, depending on what IG elements end up in the new GK Codex, I suppose that it might still be usable itself - so there's hope!
There really isn't any other way to get Space Marines and 'regular' humans on the table anymore!

Post by: Malika2
Hmm, shame really! Maybe GW should look into updating the rules for Death Watch squads for the 5th edition!
123
Post by: Alpharius
Sadly I think they think they've done that via the "Sternguard" entry in most Marine codices.
I am starting to believe that all is not lost though, and that the new GK Codex will allow us Alpha Legion die-hards to get their armies on the table.
And, with the potential for strange and freaky stuff too, via the Inquisition angle!

Post by: Malika2
If the rumours are true the Grey Knight armylist won't really include Guardsman but rather a more elite type of human unit, more akin to the Space Marine Scouts.

Very interesting painting style, everything is so pale. I am very impressed! Though the horns on Ruggent look, well, rather out of place.

Fantastic work, as always. Every time I dip into this thread I'm rewarded with some really very nice craftmanship.
I love the green for a start, please continue down this path - I'm trying to steer both of my current armies to use brighter colours to try and counteract the current trend of (whilst really cool) drab, realistic tones.
Sorry to have to interdict, however, but have you noticed your wolves don't have ears? Are you planning on sculpting some on? Top notch work all round though dude. Props.

you can always use the IG as count as scouts, or what i like is using a IG force with techpriests and the special HQ choice to be the marines in the force, granted you would only get to have 4 marines that is still something.

I am announcing this coming week a terrain whirlwind! It has already started and I plan to paint the GW modular table, the crashed rhino, the temple of skulls, 3 buildings built from Necromunda etc. parts and desertify-paint all of my Forgeworld buildings - all within this week.
a. because it would never happen otherwise
b. I want to play soon
c. I want to try out the airbrush on something easier than the models.
I'm taking the whole lot to my office today, so I can stay a little later and airbrush the whole place

B - I find it difficult to read fluff.
However... these minis are just beautiful. I love your style... and i agree that Blanche is the man. I think the most important ispiration you seemed to have drawn from him is that crisp and clear perfection too defined, too complete.

Hi Migs,
I was in London at the weekend and I visited Sir John Soane's Museum and I saw a painting that in a way reminded me of this project. The painting was by Francis Danby and unfortunately I cannot find it with google! I have not really seen anything like it before as it was almost totally black or shades of dark grey. The painting is a scene at night with the moon full and high, casting shadows in the dark over a tiled patio. The closest I could find though is the painting below which is the same scene by daylight.
Francis Danby's Scene From Shakespeare's "The Merchant Of Venice" (1827)
http://www.bridgemanartondemand.com/art/175681/Scene_from_The_Merchant_of_Venice_c1828
The main reason I am sharing this with you is I thought you might be interested as you are painting scenery...by moonlight? Shame I couldn't actually find the painting. You'll just have to visit the museum for yourself
Are the four liquid storage containers from your photograph above just food tins?

Post by: migsula
Hi mate, thanks, next time I'm in London I will try to check it out. A single painting like that can be very inspiring.
The cans are large dryfood/powder containers I found. Perfect as they are very light weight and rigid.
Nexus - I believe it is a better set up, but with these things it really is best to invest on quality stuff. Always turns out the cheapest!
And something to report:
oioioioioioiiiiiiiii....
Tried the Airbrush yesterday, heaps of fun!, so much potential, but already the first lesson, I have to revert to priming black the terrain It also became clear that despite tons of space, our office simply doesn't have a good space for this. The workshop is too dusty and dirty and we want to keep it that way, and everything else is full of stuff that doesn't want paint dust on... So a ventilated booth needed... which I could just as well have at home when it comes to models. The big stuff is different and requires spray paints for sake of sense.
I'm also on a weather tight rope. I need to do the spray painting outside and have a few days at best before its too cold - so hopefully it doesn't rain this weekend.
More to come

Post by: migsula
Thank you kind sir!
AARGH - it's been raining non stop for three days now - I need to SPRAY! I've been thinking and trying out a few things though, and it'll be easiest to apply the basic color with a large brush and a good diluted mix of paint, future and wash, so the white won't be a problem and I can add finishing touches with the airbrush. This will ensure the finish looks as close to my Legion basing as possible too.
But when I will do the tanks, priming black just seems to be the only sensible thing to do Who cares if the result is right, as with the airprush I can paint realistic "moon light".
Stupid weather now...

progress! things didn't go quite as smooth as planned last week, but I am now confident by the end of this week I shall be the happy owner of spanking finished & cool GW modular table and two full sets of themed terrain. I have everything done except rust treatment for quite a few pieces of scenery and then airbrushing sand effects to everything to tie the whole lot together.
With a group of friends we have these monthly goals, so here are mine for this month:
Cool, I managed to not totally lack last month, so:
- finish painting the terrain ASAP
- finish building, then prime and paint rest of squad "Spades" .
I've pushed the following to backburner for now:
- prime the AMech Fighting System
- build and prime the fabricator captain
(because I want to finish stuff for gaming first)

Soooo ... very good week at work - very bad for the hobby I am fairly desperate at the moment in terms of getting a suitable setup for airbrushing! Doing something with such sclae produces a great volume of over spray and dust.
Has anyone got good ideas/experiences of spray booths? And ideas where to best get one. Price is less important - quality and effectiveness is paramount and mobility a big plus.
What's your set up??

Pop up gazebo, with extra sides (or big sheets and zip ties). Not the type you have to put together like a tent, but the one that you just stand up and pull outwards to erect. Will set you back around £100, available from eBay, B&Q, DIY stores. They are 3m x 3m and work quite nicely. Plus very very portable.

Post by: migsula
Still haven't found what I need (ie. also with proper active ventilation). I have friends sending great looking links of setups available in the states - but here - airbrushing not quite popular I guess...
Anyway, I've been having some fun working with incredible new DE plastics, reading the new dex and adding finishing touches so I can prime stuff. I am getting too many ideas with the DE, so I need to go buy some more IG kits asap to get back to what I should be doing. However - I've come up with too many inventive excuses on how the Dark-kin and Legion might side for passing moments of common interest

Dark Eldar models might interesting leather skin tight suit wearing assassins of a sorts? What about some Dark Eldar hired as mercenaries by some corrupt governor?
As for your Legion project, have your read The First Heretic yet? The Alpha Legion gets a small mention in the book. One interesting bit is that the Word Bearers had set up Chaplains in the Alpha Legion to lead the Warrior Lodges. Another thing is that Lorgar knew that the Alpha Legion were approached by xenos (Cabal). I need to get my hands on that book...madness!

Wow.....!!! Inspiring sir, very inspiring indeed!
This is a huge testament to the possibilties held within small bits of plastiuc and a few coats of paint and of course a whole lot imagination and passion. Everything oozes (in a good way, not a nurgle way) character. i love the way you incoperate so many different kits into your models completely changing them but at the same time giving life to their world and story.
How many points are you up to now? Are you including your other =I=munda stuff into this ever growing 'army' of yours or is it gonna all be new stuff?
I look forward to all your updates be they new models or a post about the painting side cause I admired what you are doing and trying to say with the whole wfree flowing creative process, be like the tumbleweed and go where the wind takes you for better or worse it is about the process and experiance rather than the final outcome but here's to the final outcome being even better than before! Cheers.
I know these are really bad pics but I just wanted to show you, immediately when I saw your twists I thought of this conversion from the Inquisitor rulebook. I love both this and your twists. Are we gonna be seeing any more of them?

The OLD Daemonhunters codes was EXCELLENT for just this sort of thing.
It remains to be seen how the new GK Codex will work, though rumors have a LOT of the 'regular' Guard stuff possibly NOT in it.
Of course, the OLD one worked well as you could insert squads of 'counts as' Grey Knights into a 'regular' Guard army - something that fit VERY well thematically for a Legion operative force...

I'd certainly at least retain hope in a new Grey Knights codex with feasible alliances, but considering this is Games Workshop we're talking about here, one can only hope... but I still must say that having witch hunters or daemon hunters in with my regular forces is at least fun while it lasts if it doesn't (considering the omission of the allies in the revised codices, there's only waiting)

Intermission,
Thank you! Boyd's Dante has been a major inspiration over the years. One of the best ever conversions in shaping the original model in to something completely different, with just a few bitz. I'm up to 500ish pts, but really have been going all over the place and against smart army building. At some point I should fix that, as I really miss gaming and the inspiration it gives me to add more stuff.
Kugel wrote:Guys, do not you think, that new Grey Knights codex will be nice Alfa Legion proxy codex? Indeed - and what is a welcome bonus is the fact that the marines will be super expensive, meaning I won't have to paint too many I'm entertaining all options for lists I could use in official function, and if the list portrays marines as hard core as we've ever seen, I'm well pleased.
It's been a whirlwind end of 2010, here's hoping for a calmer 2011 with a bit more time for plastic men! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

What about adding some Apothecary like marine in the mix? Not totally a white marine or anything, but more a Legion member but with some of the Apothecary equipment. Would be most fitting. Resources for Adeptus Astartes would be rather rare for Traitor Legions primarily operating in the Imperium, every bit has to be cherished.

True enough, but my take on that is, it is a big galaxy, and many people in it have no idea just who they're talking to when they're talking to a... Space Marine!
If necessary, a simple armor swap/paint job, and you're back in business!

Post by: Malika2
I don't know how example the Alpha Legion would do this, but I imagine it would be very similar to how the Night Lords do it as explained in Soul Hunter. They are surviving and loot equipment from their defeated enemies. In the older background material (2nd and 3rd edition Chaos Codeci) it was mentioned that the Alpha Legion sought to challenge itself by fighting against other Adeptus Astartes forces. Perhaps they now also do it to get new equipment and geneseed.
224
Post by: migsula
Exactly.
There really are no traitor marines here.
10th/January/11 Tournament Plans & Painting animals.
99.9% of the Imperial Galaxy has never even seen a space marine - to them they are legend, gods of war - and should they see one, it's not like they go asking for id. The imperium has totally and successfully denied and "forgotten" the Heresy.
This operation and this planet, albeit under scrutiny and conclave, is still legit, proud and resourceful part of the Imperium.
...and I'm 90% done with the wolves and moving soon to few more guardsmen.
It's been a lot of fun to paint animals! No equipment pouches or skewed positions and small details in their mouths/eyes make all the difference. It'd be great to do some interesting rough riders at some stage.
Elsewhere, I hear rumors the GK dex might be postponed for allowing the second wave of De released earlier. De have been a big financial success. I hope this is proof for GW to really sift emphasis from Marine releases to properly cater Necrons, Tau and IG(infantry) next.
This may mean that for the tournament I mentioned (Chaos Boyz tournament in May - the premiere tournament pioneers and great friends from UK GT trips in the past, who are coming back from retirement to host an event that will be about celebrating the hobby, not just the gaming, so possibly quit suitable for this project) I would stick to Codex IG. I soon need to decide and start building more Vendettas and tanks. Oh how I miss gaming and taking this lot to field of battle one day will be extremely special.

I had him in the first list - but the lone infantry squad felt weak in the overall concept - so likely he'll be used in home games.
The only really new "entry" to Codex IG will be Legion Cell, that is a mix between marines and humans and a choise of special abilities to buy.

16th/January/11 Murdermake!
While I’ve been painting the two Dune Wolves, I’ve fittingly been reading Prospero Burns - VINTAGE ABNETT! (If you don’t get the book, you don’t get 40k.) It’s been a great inpiration for this project to have the best 40k writer write the books of my two favorite Legions. As always, he goes long and wordily in the beginning and almost has to fast forward the end, but what a finale it is. Some of his creative ideas, characters and plot line is simply stunningly suitable for the subject matter and pushing it’s boundaries This is the best kind of BL activity, and a clear evidence they should really have contained the HH series and only allowed a few writers pen it. If you haven’t read the book yet, the rest of the blog entry may contain some spoilers!
Like with the best of HH series, again with Propero Burns, you have a feeling of reading something secret, of being privileged to witness the fabric from which this universe/hobby springs from. For so long the Heresy was shrouded in myth, with glimpses and a clear outline, but all the detail missing. Abnett takes the opportunity to widen our view of the universe and imperial institutions beyond just the matters of military - and paints a wicked, feral and ultimately fresh, albeit still totally fitting vision of the 6th.
What is the single most interesting take for this project?
The fact Emperor created his Legions different to be the best for a specific role. Some where to forge Imperial Defenses, some to Lead it’s armies, some to brake enemy bastions, some to be his terror troops. But The Wolves? The 6th Legion were made to be his Executioners!
Cunning, savage hunters so feral and ruthless they would execute Emperor’s most difficult decisions. Reliable like dogs, and man to man the most able fighters of all Astartes.
The Lone Legion. The Legion that would, if need be, sanction other Legions.
When the Emperor had carefully considered all aspects of military strategy and tactical solutions he had one role reserved for insurance. The Rogue Agent, an unorthodox creative, the 20th Legion, a virus of war.
The XX Factor.

Hi Migsula, nice to see your still thinking about the legion. Looking forward to what you produce next.
I don't know if your familiar with the B&C Dornian heresy. It's as the name implies an alternate version of the heresy, where the legions take opposite positions the what they did in the original heresy. They just released the Alpha legion's IA: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=155430&st=387 bottom of the page. It gives an interesting view on the ending of Legion.

Thanks for the link sir!! I'll look into it.
SMALL UPDATE:
Dune Wolves finished, I bought and ordered all the needed components to finish the squad of Spades, to do the Don's squad, and to do the 5 Desert Operations veterans all ready for painting. That's then all of the infantry models, after which the rest of spring is dedicated to armor and airbrushing. I am now pushing everything not in the list for later - so Adeptus Mechanicum for example is in stasis at the moment
I also ordered a bunch of stuff from CMON shop for scenario targets and spice. I quess a display board is a must too.
The Tournament was pushed back to mid June which is great news.

They fit my small head fetish (ie important visual cue to art) perfectly, and with the extra helmet bulk I am sculpting will not be too small or significantly stand out from the citadel heads ( which I've carefully picked for their small size and further filed down when possible.
This is also very very good news, as my GS skills aren't up to sculpting human faces yet.
So today I've been dryfitting and planning and tomorrow glue and GS and then prime. Give me a week from that and I finally promise pictures.

Sculpting done on the IG squad and squad primed. My "GS oven" (lamp) was a little hot and made the GS sweat oddly in places, so I had to really carefully cut it afterwards here and there. Painting starts tonight.

Ok, I totally failed taking pics of the wolves, but trying again when I have some IG to show.
But here's a WIP shot of the IG squad. They will get a similar treatment as the sergeant, hand painted markings and warning chevrons to guns All the raw, fluid and pale philosophies as before, and a clear 2nd edition flavor.
And some 40mm bases thatI will build into objective markers. Also a 60mm base for "something" and new Tamya Sponge brush that I use quite a bit for different weathering effects. (more in the TWAR project you see in my gallery) The metal heads are cool zombie faces that somehow formed into an image of hideous bronze masks for a future =I=munda gang. Since like 2002 I've done an =I=nquisitor of some kind, with a retinue, almost annually... so Maybe these turn into =I= Haag's own stormtrooper kill team, or merc kill team considering how Rogue his status is after Jade Vessel. Interesting Migs, question what are the heads from or are these the Perry Mercenary ones I have seen you mention?

Post by: migsula
I use GW white primer. Have tried Vallejo and a few others, but noticed very little advantages. GW white can be risky, I have had a few bad ones over the years, but it really bonds with the plastic beautifully. I then wash the models with Vallejo game color white.
The heads are War or the Roses, with resculpted helmet shape, which will be much clearer with paint. I slapped the first layer of green on them today, and thought I'd take some WIP pics. This models communicate well how watercolorly, amateurish looking, and free the process is - and how little margin for error I have after certain point as I cannot fix with over paint, only with weathering! You only see if it works very late, unlike with doing flat base color and then shade and HL as is common.
Thanks Emperor for battle damage and dirt!
I use the sponge mostly for soot and rust effects, mixing pastes from paints, thinners, pigments and what not. I sometimes use Tamya weathering compunds and add some mig or vallejo pigments or modeling pastes in for texture. The only down sie is, you won't reach recesses, so a good shading has to be made first, last or in between.
For chipping I use ripped foam and pincers.

They are not for this project - rather the =I=munda team or future =I=munda group. I mentioned, I will make them into masks/helmets, so they can be slightly larger. Size-wise they are the size of cadian IG sergeants head. That's how big most GW heads are.

Schedule update / re tournament
February goals:
- Finish the squad Spades
- build 5 desert operators to join some of the dunetwists for 3rd vet squad.
- build as much of squad Dons as possible.
In March paint those remaining 15 infantry, then April and May for a crazy build of 7 vehicles and airbrushing them factory style, but without skipping on quality.
The week in June before the tournament: Display base.
Totally doable - but then this weekend and start of the week I have again been unable to touch the brush. Too much work and family stuff

For us budding artists in the wargaming world who are inspired by your project it's hard to cut down and take time to make our toy-soldiers as characterful as yours. It's hard to find a balance between productivity and the vision in your head.

For the first time time in ages, Hammers been super energetic on the 40k front, it is really helping me too. I've now got all but one base color in place and shaded for washes and inks phase. So everything I do with paint is there sans markings that are coming next. after which it is time for pics.
I have an urge to build the desert spec ops, heavily inspired by Afghan operations, but finishing stuff is of paramount importance when you have a goal like we do! I plan to raise the bar a bit with the desert ops as I will only make five. I also need to find a good balance with modern day reference and that peculiar 40k visual layer that is quite something different.

Papa Nurgle has tried to stall my work with a vicious stomach flu. I just got well again and am off to a business trip tomorrow. I have started to paint the markings and have a pic of the squad sans wash and weathering to show how crucial they are for this style. Already waiting for next week and finally getting the squad done. Hopefully it's been worth the wait. Finishing 9 guys is a 50% increase on my force, so it should feel great.

Deeply admire your work. Period.
On the discussion about concept/vision/productivity/quality: Imo the biggest problem here is that one needs to have a wide variety of skills most people would be happy to have one of. There are those rare hobbyists where everthing comes together. It's just like in every other discipline of arts, you have your prodigies and you have your normal guys. The key is hard work, iron will will finally take you there. 只要功夫深铁杵磨成针。 You just need to work hard to grind an iron rod to a needle.
Let's grind...

Painting wise - this stuff isn't very time consuming. No single model has taken more than 10hours. Unfortunately, I have so little free time, that those say 7 hours, may mean 14 half an hour sessions The IG sarge was maybe 5 hours. Thanks guys. The situation has been a tad depressing. It's the first time in my life I am unable to spend time on the hobby, even when I am inspired and would like to. Just too busy at work and too tired at home and without dedicated hobbyspace.
My plan was to move stuff to the office, but I already spend too much time there. At home, when the little man hits the sack and it is nice and quiet, I have no place to work.
Challenging before we get a bigger place, or the work load lightens - which is quite unlikely with the direction our agency is heading.

It's looking great Migs. I'm really glad to see you're still getting pleasure from your design work and b-ball, even if they are biting back I think having passion in several areas of life is only going to make you a better designer; you can take a break when you need it and put your energy elsewhere, rather than burning yourself out trying to push through the lower ebbs.

Exactly , no compromise, just please your self, and it doesn't have to make sense. So you get to have the fun and no restrictions, more towards art. (But no "pay" either, and no "dream come true", so it's a balance, as my real aspirations are in the working world)
it worked though!
Admitting there's no steam, realising no-one should really care, yet instead of "pics or I won't even talk to you bitch" I got some understanding, and...
...And I've painted all the markings to my IG squad (so only washing and fun bit, ie. weathering left) and organized all the bitz for the desert operations guys and about to call Hammer for a paint fest set up this weekend.

I don't entirely disagree with you migs, but I do feel there is a "Dream come true" mentallity that goes along with this hobby equally to one's aspirations in the real world. There is no way I could imagine not feeling that way after a very long-winded project where after miles and miles of stress and success, you finally see what you've created at its whole, and realize at that moment you can take it to the next level..see your creation in motion. That is one of the greatest feelings one can have, to be able to use your creation in such a way as this hobby, and enjoy it purely for sentimental reasons. In this way, from a competitive standpoint(not neccesarily refering to competitions, just the essence of playing the game) there are the greatest benefits from both winning and losing, win and your creation is successful but also entirely your own, lose and now you have the possibility of continuing the project to make it better! Thats why I enjoy this hobby, the satisfaction on all fronts.

I do agree with your well written reply sir!, but I do not dream of that moment. I dream of being powerful and successful in my profession and providing as much economic and cultural freedom for my family as possible I dream of staying healthy and seeing my loved ones prosper.
In the hobby I drop the real world - the ambitions become quicker, I'm a kid, I have no rules, I enjoy, I vision, I labor, and I do love the feeling of seeing the vision come to life in my imagination and get great satisfaction when others see it too.

Saturday, March 26, 2011 / Backdrop
Here’ the canvas, the backdrop.
The Rangers of Blackhawk down.
The unsung heroes of war.
The men of the Imperial guard.
I finally managed some time and finished the first of many guard squads to come. The first of at least two squads of Renoir Grenadiers. They are what you see off-centre in the codex cover. I wanted personality, strong material feel, but nothing that stands out from the army. We’ve been over the green - this army needs its color - moon light or not - I’ve come full circle to feel the 40k universe as a grim gritty place that has visceral splashes of color, gore and warp. I think the group shot shows the palette at work quite well. (I need to fix the wolves base rust)
The Guard are the Backdrop, even if this is mostly a guard army. The Legion is really the Deltas if you take the Blackhawk Down metaphor, but you can imagine the tenfold effect here. The dynamics between a man and an Astartes being both a core topic of the 40k universe and this project.
I had some photographic challenges. With what I am trying to do, I would need near perfect color rendition and some depth of field. I have a point and shoot that takes fairly accurate pics, but even in natural light, my quickly assembled background of too many whites made it a mess. I photoshopped the levels best I could to resemble what I actually have done painting wise.
But here they are - and hopefully I am back now, I am really looking forward to the 5 desert operators coming next. Think deltas in Afghanistan, but with that deep 40k layer on top that levels the modernity and adds that gothic, and some twists for company.

I still love that valk....I'm right in thinking you didn't use an air brush?

I do agree with your well written reply sir!, but I do not dream of that moment. I dream of being powerful and successful in my profession and providing as much economic and cultural freedom for my family as possible I dream of staying healthy and seeing my loved ones prosper. In the hobby I drop the real world - the ambitions become quicker, I'm a kid, I have no rules, I enjoy, I vision, I labor, and I do love the feeling of seeing the vision come to life in my imagination and get great satisfaction when others see it too. When I was a kid I dreamt of winning a Golden Demon. That dream came true and to me it was my dream come true hobby moment. The only one I've consciously dreamt of. Automatically Appended Next Post: ok @Migsula: No doubt man, and thanks, I really thought about how I wanted to sum up my feelings before typing that out, but I wholly agree, support and comfort for your family, yourself and a success in your industry is WHOLLY more important, and I greatly respect that you feel that way. And no doubt, when doing our hobby, you definitely go into kid mode all excited to be playing with toy soldiers, and to know and socialize with people that accept your hobby. Anyways, Those models are looking seriously incredible, so much personality and as an Artist I really enjoy your color choices. Excellent use of vibrant colors, but more importantly your execution of proper neutrals to really make the pieces VIBRANT. Keep it up man!

Guys, I really want to thank you for the support and understanding during this blog. When I set about I knew I wasn't really looking for opinions about color schemes or ideas as such, or approval, but the level of interest, input and camaraderie has been a true inspiration. The community here has really been a huge extra motivator to keep the hobby alive during the all consuming spin-cycle at work and what not.

I have to say I agree- I really enjoy the color scheme that you gave the team, and the entire premise of "Black Hawk Down meets WH40K" sums it up perfectly.
I honestly wouldn't care how the army played, I'd be pleased to own something like this- something to shoot for with my budding Eldar, perhaps!
Thanks for the inspiration, migs!

I did a day trip to UK for business, and had a chance to read a thrilling book. Task force black by BBC reporter Mark Urban. It paints a thorough picture of SAS and Delta taking on AQI in Baghdad between 2003-08. A campaign of intense violence, backed up by a huge intel and operations network.
It's a thrilling and important account to the war, one the Whitehall tried to prevent from being published, and for this project it highlights how the Alpha Legion would operate. I keep coming back to Emperor and his plan to give each chapter a specific purpose. No other chapter fits my tastes and imagination like the XX.
The book had images too, the SAS for example each used their different mix of camo gear, a bit of bravado that fits my Desert Operators nicely.
Stay tuned.

Here's some Desert Blades and an Apple ad for you
The GS is still curing, waiting for the final smoothing detail work, but otherwise the squad is ready for primer and I can't wait to get painting. As usual, some GW scale reservations, for example, it would've been cool to mount all the gear properly on the models torso/chest, but have to balance with the given realities. I think together with 5 twists, this will make a nice squad, with some realworld special ops flavor, but still that distinct, 40k nonsense and gothicness - which I need to further emphasize with paint.
As this whole army really sprung from the =I=munda adventure, it is quite cool to get some sweet models for future =I=munda gangs too. I already have two distinctly different Legion cells to pick from for the =I=munda campaign that are hopefully to come in the future. You can also see the Fabricator Captain, who is getting some detail on the chest armor. I'd like to paint him after the operators as a brake from IG types, and to do something thoroughly red and gothic, but with that moonlight twist.
For the painting I've decided, I will try something inspired by recent developments in camotech, mixed with the smallest sparks of colors and hues present elsewhere in my force:

Thanks lads,
One disclaimer about the Plasmas I forgot to make: on the size of plasmas, have tried a few things since (bipods, stockier shoulder rest, scope, strap - the bloody guns are just so big and I can't stop for a total redo of the arms/positions, or the whole project is tipping over at this stage. the arms that take flamers and meltas no prblemo, just don't work here and become top heavy, unrealistic.
Painting to the rescue it is.
In the army they will blend in ok.
Malika - The Viper is the one in the pic, it's a vendetta with rack of air to air missiles under the wings

I found this piece of artwork over at Deviant art. I guess you could make something similar by tearing a bolter and plasma pistol apart. I also noticed that on your Alpha Legion marine you used a 2nd edition bolter, is it the plastic one from the tactical marine sprue? If so, you might then also have the thin back part of it?
Perhaps a bit overkill for just two plasma guns, but still...food for thought!
16912
Post by: konf
I recently made a plasmagun conversion from a plasmapistol extending the middle part with a peace of sprue. It looks more like a plasma smg sizewise but might just be right for the spec ops theme of your squad. I'll upload a pic as soon as I'm home from work.
btw... what will you use the two desert wolves as?

Post by: McNutty
I've used the flamer off of the catachan sprue and a plasma pistol to make a decent looking plasmagun. Just snip off the flamer tank, cut a L-shape out of the flamer tubes, and work the pistol into that area.
It creates a shorter profile than the standard plasmagun, but would probably present similar issues with length.

I see what you mean, the plasma guns look slightly out of place, if you try to apply realistic stadards, that is. It's 40k, that's an excuse for any missized modelling, GW used it from day one. Anyway, I know you like your minis to make at least some sense and so do I. My suggestion is to simply swap in Elysian plasmaguns, they are less bulky, less wide and slightly shorter IIRC.

Thanks. The entire army represents a mission under moonlight - and the desert is very cold at night I vision the twists to be mutated to sustain rad storms, sand blasts, heat and cold, but I want the rest of the army to look like they are operating at night, with a crisp, cool climate.
To an extent the head gear and feel is inspired by pics from Afghanistan and Iraq. Automatically Appended Next Post: KONF,
I like those a lot! If I make more, I may well look into custom building some of my own. I'll stick to these now to keep the momentum and also because the attached twists already have a standard IG plasma gun.

I had a similar problem for my failed guard project, Migs. However I used a plasma pistol and the Cadian flamer to solve it, removing the flamer barrel and replacing it with the plasma pistol minus the back 2mm and pistol grip. Worked rather well.

Mamma Mia!! The new Grey Knight Dex is a sacred gift from the Cabal for my operation.
And exactly where the project is heading sooner or later. I get to do a full squad of my faulx wielding legion marines and use the GK in pa rules - they will feel like Marines should do!! And in comes the inquisition, and my count as coteaz which means crazy operator squads with unique themes.
I'm sure for home games a few squads of allied guard will be kosher.

I was disappointed with the lack of Storm Troopers and allies (I'm not surprised though) in the book. But I enjoyed most of the background (I'm at a loss to work out what's lurking under Titan) and the new Inquisitors and henchman units are great. As for your gaming purposes... well its perfect. I'm looking forward to a whole squad of Alpha Legion (I assume that will be a 2012 project?).
I like the new squad and the hats are great. The group reminds me of your Scout Squad.
As for the massive plasma weaponry GW let the side down by not making guard sized ones, like forge world do. konf's idea is great and I don't think having two types of plasma weaponry would be bad. The twist has an older version while the elite troopers have more modern versions (I know, this is 40k so it would probably be the other way round but you get the idea).
The Magos is coming along nicely...taking shape.

After getting the infantry mass together - I really need to expand the crazy borders of the operation and imagery. It is going too sensible now. I think so - though I really should do the second grenadier squad now...
And trying to get you guys some pics of the desert operators today. Nothing super special, but rounds up one of the themed squads nicely and gets me closer to what really makes this project. Automatically Appended Next Post: Sunday, April 10, 2011 / Spice
So - not entirely sure how you’re going to read this as a stand alone unit - but it fleshes out the second half of the twist squad into a nice themed veteran unit, while putting a clear need for that second Grenadier unit to balance and set the overall visual language of the army to colorful enough. These are a bit of pepper to the sauce that makes the dish.
The fact they ended up so drab nags me badly to be honest. I should’ve gone with army theme first, recent army inspiration second - not the otherway around.
I did have fun with these and painted fast and without too much consideration, which was a liberal brake. I had to go with dark guns - against the army standard to give the models some kind of a focus point. I also established clear rules for future and vehicles, where I need to be much stronger with 40k wackyness, and easier about realism and military of today.

Next is 3 marines! and 10 grenadiers.
This was an odd squad - I'm displeased about them now that I've had time to reflect, but when I place them in the army I think differently... and I'm super pleased to have managed to finish a game legal force now, but I lost sight of the main goal in my appetite to just paint some cool military stuff and I can't go back and change due to the technique I use for this project. (need the white to start with)
Ah well, mistakes happen.
And with what comes next, I get to perfect formulas that already work and take the posing and character development to new directions.
THEN, I must get to single minis for the sake of my health.

The camo is excellent (but since I've seen your Eldar Rangers its to be expected). I think I would have preferred camo guns too but I understand the need from a modelling perspective. I'm not really a fan of the skin colour on these guys. Trying to compare them with the other vets and it could just be the skin colour works better with the plain green fatigues. What I love is the tache, scarves and beanie. I like that you have camoed the skin too. The Serg reminds me of Blaine from Predator
Now a cheeky request...any chance of having another photograph of these guys with their Twist colleagues. I'm intrigued as to how they work together.

I've started work on 3! new marines Quite excited to work on the core of the project again. This will add up to 5 Alpharius and 1 Alpharius in Desert gear. So we are talking unit size and an entirely new dynamic. My wish is to finish building and painting them and the second 10 man squad of Grenadiers within this month. Crazy - but now I'm finding nuggets of time and have a week of around easter, I feel like making ambitious plans and stumbling midway and still having plenty to show for it.
These 13 models will establish the force as an army and create a first real retrospective point of the journey. I then have to swiftly follow with vehicles... and the way I see it, then comes the beginning! I finally drop all restrictions and deep dive into the gothic borders and adjacent elements of the XX Legion.

Thank you very much for your job again, and for open some nice sources on matter of modern military warfare. I was real good to read Task Force Black, because i did not expect such level of information with a lot of action and revelations. Really nice.
About codex Gk as AL. It is best peace of work from GW ever, i think. GK player can do ANY army types. Yes with some BUTs, but... Sad, they did not get Valcs, but storm raven is real gunship! What can you ask to add for desert strikes what storm raven do not have? And this paladins are REAL marines equivalent. GK commander have nice abilities. Coteas do henchmen scoring. Oh how I wish for a proper dakka iPhone app, I could snap an upload photos of the process in seconds - the lack of now means, even if I snap a pic now and then, I simply don't have the time to process and go through the cumbersome uploading process. Monday, May 2, 2011 / GRAND NEWS
All-right - I had a week off in the sun, with spare time during the evenings and have tons of stuff to share, firstly a rather grand statement. No doubt foolishly aired in the glory of productivity.
This project has been very very rewarding, and I’ve come to enjoy the moonlight imagery and really grow fond of the miniatures. I can’t wait to get gaming. The release of the Grey Knights codex has sparked new life and energy and once again reignited my utter love for all things inquisition. But how to re-invent everything again? (personally that is, I am well aware this is mostly an inspiring personal journey, rather than an art project of wider leverage)
Enter a new project, a byproduct of this one, and one that will integrate - through contrast.
THE INQUISITOR TRILOGY
I will build three very special and very challenging to paint inquisitors along with their respective retinues. When I did the Shaddes Offe Greye, which I’ve attached a few pics of - it was a study of the grey areas in the inquisition and the first piece in this trilogy. The second and third will be black and white - literal extremes. And the work has started. There will be now WIP pics. I want to present a finished vision, as I intend to try something quite new.
The second installment of the trilogy.
DIVINE LIGHT - Inquisitor Agnes Beati, Ordo Malleus
I’ve recently become very interested about painting light - through the moonlight theme of Legion of course, but now I wanted something blinding and glorius, a total polar opposite. I’ve always loved the imagery and colors of Catholic icons and now studied the methods and intend to use it for models. I don’t want to go in to boring depths, but the icons really are something. A Base coat of gold is the key to everything, and a limited palette of related yellows, azul blue and muted reds that draw vitality from the gold underneath. I want them to be the most golden and bright, but harmonious bunch of miniatures ever seen.
But I already warn you, it may take time and may not work as well as I think, and I will not share any wip pics, probably ever for this one, but promise to keep a stream of neat stuff coming up in the mean while. Hopefully the wait will be worth it. Agnes Beati and four of her 7 henchmen are already extensively converted.
Obviously it would be a pity to brake my tradition of gaming with all the models I’ve done, so a new =I=munda campaign is set to start in the beginning of 2012.
PS:
As for the “confines” of this project, The Mechanicus Priest is ready for paint!, A brand new Rogue Trader likewise - also built from an Empire wizard. I've done 4 models from the same kit now - each very very different. The Rogue trader being an archetype akin to Adeptum Mechanicus characters, and a character really fitting to Legion operators was something I always wanted to do.
Pics as soon as I get a moment with the camera, now that I am back to work and fighting to catch the week off Ces’t la vie!
here are a few pics of Trilogy Part 1, “Shaddes offe Greye”, for those who’ve missed them before, click on them to go the gallery for pics of all of them:

The Tech Priest doesn't scream Mechancius to me yet, so I'm intrigued to see what you do for the final 10%.
Daemon Cherub nice and creepy.
The Death Cultist is nice and I think the first time I've seen someone use those particular dark eldar hellion arms without them looking silly.
Looking forward to seeing them painted...along with the Tech Priest's massive robot

Migs: I am interested as to why you chose the sang shoulder pads for the fabricator captain as they seem to overtake him a lot in the picture. I like the concept behind the assassin though, but the guy of the right seems a little odd in the picture. Any chance you could show him at different angels?

Liking the non-female death cult bloke. Great relief to finally see a man taking up the role of blood thirsty assassin, especially with the Flagellant body. Must agree, though, that the sang. pad is looking out of place and rather large. But, I can assume you have some plan and can't wait for them to get some paint!
Way to outshine, Kaesar II

I hear we finally have a new date for that tournament of tournaments! Ie. the backbone for actually finishing this army. It's six months from now. Which means I can do it justice and breath and finally I got the necessary deadline drive back.
It's time to get organized again and have a paint fest with friends or something similar soon.

The dutchess Agnes Beatie is a great example of how to convert the deldar into sisters . like the =][= symbol , the gun looks a bit big at the moment , a flame pistol might suit her size more, and the basing is a lovely choice too.

Awesome work so far man! The thumb on the switch is indeed fantastic, just one of those little details that makes you stop for a second and think "Wait... did he really... oh man!" Just splendid!
The only question I have about the gun is whether she shoots it with two hands, and if so, where does the second hand go? As it is it looks big and bulky enough to require two hands to use, but there doesn't seem to be a decent place to put the other hand. If it is in fact a pistol it probably needs to be cut down a good bit. Even by 40k standards it is probably too big and awkward for one hand, especially because she is so svelte withe her DE parts. Rawr!

It's a point I also considered, but in a group of groups it's great to have variety and I think the Inuisitors' varied personalities are really reinforced with different entourages. Some have a plethora of weird mutants and never do wells, some a collection of specialists, and some a brotherhood of warrior monks that all look alike! It's a flamer weapon - think alien 2 - so the lack of recoil and less weight for its volume does make it much more plausible. However, a lithe pistol might have been a modeling choise, for gaming reasons I wanted a proper incinerator Automatically Appended Next Post: ELSEWHERE - the pimp my wizard challenge is progressing nicely. It might not necessarily be a tie in to this project, but who knows yet. Here's some musings from the other thread:
It is often restrictions and apparent "drawing a blank" moments that when conquered provide the best minis (or most other innovations our race has to offer) Scarity and given parameters add focus and or force you to be even more creative to stand apart.
I'm nearly done with my conversion. It's proving to be one of my personal favorites. Being part of a group effort always helps and adds an aura too, but also I picked such ill-fitting upper body that I had to really go town converting it to a coherent, well proportioned whole. I think it's now a very different volume for an =I= and sits very well between the other inquisitors I've done and the large scale Legionnaires. I'm certainly doing the spin-off later and would be great to have some of you guys join - but enough of that, now is now.
I'm going on a business trip to states on monday and will be away for a week. But pics when I'm back and going to keep checking this thread.

Just realized I didn't comment on Agnes yet and maybe it's for a reason I forgot to. While it is without a doubt a solid conversion and I might have praised it if somebody else would have made it, I've got to say she's not what I've come to expect from you Migs.
Maybe it's just me, because it seems like I'm the only one criticizing, but imo she lacks the je ne sais quoi your work normally has.
It's basicly dark eldar bitz with some imperial hints bashed in. If it's WIP and you planned to blend the dark eldar parts into the rest to create a whole, consider me happily waiting for that, if not it's still nice, but beneath your usual inspiring work.

"Beneath your usual inspiring work".
You know, I totally understand what you are saying, but likely it really is just you (and everyone else who doesn't like it as much as some other piece ). It's interesting how people essentially approach personal taste as some ultimate quality measure that requires a strong statement of it being some how inferior.
I'm very relaxed about this all these days. Just awesome when I have a moment to do models, beneath or beyond anyone's taste - who knows.

You read/sound a little offended and I hope you neither took it for a strong statement nor for a ultimate quality measure on my behalf. I didn't intend either, I was merely intending to provide C&C. Maybe I should have been less direct, but I expected you to shrug that off.
While my personal taste of course has some impact on my judgement, I wouldn't say that this was the case here. It's a solid model and the fact that it doesn't make me drool like your shades of grey stuff hasn't had any influence on my comment.
I was mainly trying to say that the conversion is quite simple and imo that's a fact, especially if we compare it to your others.
Again, not bad, just simplistic compared to your usual standards.
The only bit of personal taste as quality measure I'm willing to admit is my dislike for the unchanged dark eldar details.
I'm very relaxed about this all these days. Just awesome when I have a moment to do models, beneath or beyond anyone's taste - who knows.
Yeah, and who cares? We're doing it for ourselves, just because it's a nice hobby. Enjoy your (scarce) hobby-time!

Not offended. Amused with the interweb. The other guy might say it's one of the best and the next one it is beneath me. Both like it is some exact science. I go to a nice restaurant, I get a quality meal, but the second dish might not be quite like the 4th. Different dish rather than beneath the chef? The imagery of twists vs. angelic is kinda different. I don't know how I should react . Probably just say thanks all round

Bit of a repeat from the Wizard Challenge, but:
I started painting today. "look ma no hands". It's been a while. I have some great reference material for my reds and the feel of the model/imagery. A combination of Blanche, Allan Carcasso, Goodbrush and Fichtenfoo. All artists from different genres that I admire deeply. Bit of JRN tricks thrown in too

The Twist Thundertusk
I've been waiting for the release of the Ogre K Thunder Tusk, as I want to convert it into a Dune Twist ride. (Think Star Wars sand people mammoth, but more gothic and loaded with twist gear) Those of you not familiar with the model, see here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440005a&prodId=prod1330012a
Part of the appeal of this Legion project has been the themes within themes, and being able to build what I will and then worry about the rules. But speaking of which, what rules would you use for such a beast in 40k setting?? Currently I am between IG and GK codexes and intend to mix and match from both for my games and the army.
So as I see the Legion project as long time (think a decade are so) hobby labor of love, eventually within the project I may have three or so differently themed armies!
Saturday is the deadline of Pimp My Wizard, and what little hobby time I haven left this month will be with the Legion project.

17244
Post by: The Good Green
You might count it as a dreadnought. The toughness and close combat of a large beast. If it has a gunner riding it, that would account for a ranged weapon arm. Might not have the movement for it, though... maybe a war bike or trike, or something like an ork buggy... a land speeder! That might do the trick, with the right upgrades, good for terrain tests (right?)... Do the GKs have land speeders?

Post by: Northen
The idea for for the sand mammoth is awesome. You should definitely do it.
Rules wise, I guess it could go for IG tank, depending on the weapon layout. In bigger Apoc style games it can be squiggoth or something similar.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Carnifex?? (which would give you a codex option for any beasts you wanted to add).
224
Post by: migsula
I guess Squiggoth is the best/most fitting option, thanks! I'm quite excited of this conversion. I'm adding a lot of imperial stowage to make sure it'll be very 40k. I am also priming the Fabricator Captain and his construct and will paint them as a nice contrast to the Thudenrtusk! Machine vs. Beast
19525
Post by: jamopower
Why not Nemesis dreadknight, if the army is already using otherwise GK rules? It's afterall one of the tougher monstrous creatures in the game and can have various different weaponry. Also I guess that are quite similar sized, at least heightwise. Of course then it can't be used for transporting other guys. Just as a mobile fighting platform with guns. I don't remember if you can give two ranged weapons to dreadknight, but I could imagine the psilencer as the crew shooting with some machineguns and then have a bigger cannon as a heavy psycannon.

Post by: Disjointed Entity
Go crazy, use it as a Chimera! Gives you a 12 model transport capacity, it's amphibious (which could account to the beast's size) and comes with the option to fire out the top (3 models) and his 6 firing ports.
Give it a Dozor Blade and it can re-roll for dangerous terrain.
Seems a decent idea to me.

Disjointed has it right, tho isn't there some kinda "harder" tank from forgeworld or the Imperial Armour books that it could represent? An opportunity to use the rules for something that is rarely seen on 40k gameboards
11406
Post by: Disjointed Entity
Depending on the size I suppose you could run it as a Gorgon Transport
50 model capacity with assault ramp anyone?
39164
Post by: Axlbush
Certainly an upgrade on a chimera! Probably a bit too big - unless that thundertusk has been eating three weetabix for breakfast since he was a nipper!
Maybe a Malcador annihilator with some heavy weapon toting twists hanging off it?

Why not a squiggoth? It feels like the most biological fit to me

Squiggoth looks like the most sensible option.
All vehicles will likely raise eyebrows due to them having an Armour Value...

Agreed. And the model is very convincing as a squiggoth so the counts-as fudge factor is minimal.

What I have done though, is to start an Armylist thread where I hopefully get some feedback on the list. Not many here realize, but years ago I was a fairly decent 40k player, finishing in the top 10 of the UK GT final (so first through the heats).
