Some bloody awesome stuff posted up in here since I last had a chance to look. Work's been getting intense as we head towards the Easter break, and I purchased The Division which seems to have taken up much of my spare time. I've still been plodding along in my own painting, though not nearly as fast as I "should" be. With a bit of luck (well, commitment, actually) I should be able to get 2 units each done for Undead and Gondor.

I've updated the OP with the additions to February as well.

Very nice terminator there .
@AZzazelx, I need to kick the painting in gear too. I hope to have time tomorrow to get some stuff done, but the weeks have been so crazy.

JW: yeah, I agree. For whatever reason, I hate hate H8 doing bases. Never liked doing it, regardless of game system. I should spend the extra time making them look better.

Maybe that can be part of my painting/hobbying commitment for this "tale of" thing going forward.

I couldn't agree more. Basing is the least enjoyable part of this hobby.

Got the unit of 3 thallax done finally

I'll grab some better pics once I've varnished them.
Want to try and finish the thanatar too.

But for now:

Tried OSL for the first time with a brush too.
It will do for now but I need practice, then I'll redo it at some point.

Yeah, very nice, Josh. I'll second the weatheirng on the legs looks very effective

You know, I think I might have one of those things... or something very similar at least. Metal and resin? (I think) metal legs?

Thanks, guys. The dust on the legs is really easy-- just a series of brown drybrushes. I'm still figuring out how to do chipping without an airbrush, though.

My second Gondor unit for March is done! Archers of Dol Amroth. More pics and writing here.

I've finished 13 of the 22 skeleton spearmen that I need to make up 2 units for the Undead (combining with 2 previously-painted ones from the same range for 2 "regiment" units of 12). 4 on the desk that may or may not be completed today, 3 more to finish the majority of at work this week, and then 3 "leader types" and done. So I'm on track to achieve my goals for this month, plus an extra unit each for both Gondor and Undead as stretches. Then we'll see what I can manage to finish off over the Easter break as there are three more Gondor units that won't take a lot of work.

Nice looking archers, Azazelx.

Quick question - you mentioned earlier in the thread that you would be running this in six month blocks - would I be correct in thinking that means space for new participants in July?

Thanks Dysartes. Any idea what you might want to work on? If you're really keen, you're welcome to join in for 4 months? We've had a few "sign ups" who haven't been seen since, so swings and roundabouts.

Here's what will probably be my next Gondor unit(s) - I'm managing to avoid completing those two cavalry units like a real champion!

I cleaned these guys up and then sprayed them yesterday, just did the brown on the bases now (for some reason PVA & sand sticks much more effectively to painted plastic). So sick of painting WoMT plastics, so I dug out my unit of 10 Osgilliath Veterans, with an armoured Faramir and a standard bearer. Jeweler's sawed the head off the standard bearer and replaced it with a bandaged head from Warlord's Roman Veterans sprue. Still need to rough him and the Faramir model up a bit more before I spray them. There's also 2 plastic WoMT archers which it turns out will complete another troop for KoW after my reorganisation from regiments to troops.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to withdraw my claim of working on Tau this month, as I got totally sidetracked painting Shadows of Brimstone instead. As well as the usual random nonsense.

Can I swap the Tau out for the board game?

Because at this point with the exception of a MIA saloon girl, a single void spider, and finishing up the Goliath, I've almost got the whole box painted!

In lieu of the saloon girl I dug out one of the ladies from Swamps of Death instead. I should have them all finished this weekend...

...and hopefully the Tau can be my Spring Break project instead! If I don't get distracted by Ogres and Undead that have made their way into my home. Or Confrontation Wolfen...

(Also got the perfect primer color for Khanjira, who will hopefully get started this break as well.)

Unfortunately have to cut down my goals yet again, due to being really, really busy with uni assignments and really, really time restricted with painting. I have managed to get my Bane Thralls 90% painted, they just need basing and they're finished. Next month should be big-time work though, as I have a break from uni and I should finish off the backlogs for both my Skaven army and my 30k Dark Angel army.

People are doing well. I am as always lagging behind. Have managed a fair bit of progress. But nothing seems to be getting finished. Keep hopping from model to model. It's a real bane of batch painting. Nothing seems to ever get done and then all of a sudden bam another 20 odd models are done.

Heh, no problem. But if you can think of at least a common theme for them it would also be cool. Just LMK if you want to be added to the current list.

Originally I envisioned it as motivating people to help start/finish armies or forces in a more focused manner, and I'm still trying to make myself get stuff done on task so I can put Gondor behind me eventually, but I'm quite happy if it helps to encourage people to paint and get projects finished that are meaningful to them. So I've edited your goals.

An objective marker for my Orks

A Mekboy Speedsta and a Flakwagon made out of random bits

My monthly output, although only the Epic stuff and the guy on the larger base was fully painted, everything else was washed and based.

Been a bit unwell and also obsessed with Dark Souls, but I put a few hours in yesterday to get the villains from Wrath of Ashardalon finished. Still need to do the heroes, but this puts me over the 100 minis mark for the year so far. Will try to get the heroes done today - a bit tired of the set now and ready to move on.

Duergar:

Kobolds:

The titular Ashardalon:

(Funnily enough, this guy is the "big bad" in a two year long D'n'D campaign I've been running online. Pretty weird to have him painted up! But a lovely dragon mini)

And all the villains together:

After the heroes, the Descent core game is next on my hitlist. Then I'll either do Space Hulk, or take a break from board games and work on an army project.

I've got the Core Game and 1 expansion right now. So I might break it down a bit into smaller chunks than "1 game, 1 month" like I've been doing for.

I apologize for the quality of the picture, we got us some gakky weather around here with annoying light conditions.

But anyway, HA!

Wait, some letters are missing.

SHAme!

On me!

Well, did finally get my three Russ tanks all done, aside from the decals and the vision blocks / search lights, need to get a new dropper of Vallejo for that. However, another step closer to my trip to the UK. Only things left to do now is paint up the tank commander and banner for the Vanquisher, then stick together and paint a Dracosan armoured transport, Malcador with battle cannon & demolisher cannon combo and a Malcador Infernus with magnetized trailer before the 14th of April. I may have made a grave error on my end here.. But it would be a good way to make up for not being as active as I wanted to be back in February.

Following up managing to finish 2 units for Gondor this month, I managed to finish 2 units for the Undead as well. Hurrah!

Well, they can be run as either 2 Regiments or a single Horde in KoW, but I'm counting it as two, since they both have leaders, musicians and (sort of) their own heraldry. More here or lots more here.

I may be able to finish one more Gondor unit as well, since it only involves completing two models, and all that's left to do is highlighting their black clothing... it's just painful and off-putting to paint them, and it'd make a very quick tick for April if I waited until Friday to finish them - but that'd feel too much like cheating myself since there's only the pair of them...

Got my Bane Thralls done, sadly that's all I've managed this month though. Uni mid-term break starts next week though, and I've finished all my assignments for a while now, so I'll be able to get a lot more done. Next month I aim to get my Skaven finished (already somewhat underway), paint my Unit Attachments for the Banes, and complete the last of my 30k Dark Angel models, a 5 man Heavy Bolter support squad.

Yeah, you're not wrong. I think I'm painting under too bright of a light. That flaw wasn't that obvious to me until I put it in the lightbox. But yeah, for sure, and I'm gonna keep an eye out for that in future models.

No problem. We all know that gak happens and sometimes for many reasons we might not get anything finished or even paint at all for extended periods of time. If you can get 2 goals into April even better! (But it's all for your own collection in the end, so whatever works for you.)

Ulf - you're going to have to update that group shot again now! I won't update the OP wiht your stuff until after the 31st, since you'll probably have 2 or 4 more models done by then.

Great stuff, Thraxas. I managed to get the 2 models I needed for that Archer unit done. Just need to spray varnish them and then I can photograph the unit together.

If people who haven't already done so could please try to post their monthly pics, I'll be able to update the OP and start on April.

It's been a hell of a spring break.

At least I got my Shadows of Brimstone finished. Maybe I should finally start those Tau I keep talking about...

But then again there's an Ogre army that's sitting in front of me waiting to get put together....ugh. Decisions....

Malcador vanilla, Dracosan and an Infernus, the official deadline is in twelve days. I'll be happy to at the very least get them all primed and blocked in at the very least though.

Well I didn't get as much done as I wanted this month. Bought more than I painted , which is usual, however I've been painting a lot more than I normally do.

Here is the majority of what I did this month. The 4 fatties still need strong tone put on them, but every time I open my pot of it the top layer hardens up and i loose a ton of it, so I'm waiting to get a bunch of fingures all done at once with it.

only 17 models ......Oh wait there was a rabbit in there too

April will hopefully see the Kings of War army I'm building with the three front guys here developed. Theres a total of 27 models in the 2000pt army, three are done and 12 more are proceeding currently.

Oh and here is a picture of the King of War army that iposted in my thread a few days ago. Hoping to get it completed this month.

My pledge for April will be the one I intended to do in March before RL kicked me in the nutz (well, the shoulder actually, but if I'm honest that's not what really slowed me down). So, the Tau Piranha. If I have time I'll also try to knock out some Stealth suits and maybe some drones as well.

Hey if big ticket kickstarter s can put in a low funding goal and use fake stretch goals to fill out the core product... Why not me?

Gah! Blind guardian on Pandora is playing the soulforged (totally about Raistlin) and I'm in the mood to paint the everloving feth out of something but all I can do is pace around trying to lull Miss Babyington into slumber... Curses!

Okay, I'm going to be cheap this month. I'm going to be working on my Covenant of Antarctica Air Fleet boxed set. However, I will not be doing the whole thing. My plan is to more or less split it up and work on the smaller stuff this month. So, that means bombers and any fighter drone tokens I might have. Unless I'm really feeling it, I won't be working on the battleships. The main reason for that is that 1)my birthday is this month, and that means I'll very likely be getting a pile of minis and 2)I picked up a pile of clearanced minis yesterday from Brookhurst Hobbies and received my missing Dreadball stuff. So, I have quite the pile and I'd just rather get through that stuff right now than the Dystopian Wars vehicles.

Sounds good Barzam, probably not a bad idea to pace ourselves in the middle-late stretch.

Here's what I've got for you guys so far, technically "done" for April but we'll see if I can't do a little more:

I'm not apologizing for the big base, it looked better This was a bit rushed, but I had both of my kids at the kitchen table while I tried to knock it out...feeding the small one baby treats to placate her and helping the other with the Nick Jr. games. Not how I'd want to paint every day, but he's done just the same.

A bit hard to see, but here is the entirety of the Shadows of Brimstone: City of Ancients base set.

My "stretch goals" are also there-

Swamp Slugs of Jargono
Heroes from the other box set- Swamps of Death
Malifaux Guild Guards
Malifaux Lady Justice and the Judge from the Guild's Judgement

Somewhat better photos http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-72319-50714_Shadows%20Of%20Brimstone.html

April is back to actual units though.

OGRES.

Big fat dumb ogres. Ogres on shaggy horned things. Ogres yelling. Ogres carrying sticks. Ogres with meat. Ogres shooting stuff. Ogres on really really big shaggy things.

If I can finish the ogres, I'll be starting up the Death Marshalls from that Guild's Judgement posse, finishing the Hellvermin enemies for Brimstone, and try to finish up some Scaly Horde stuff for DeepWars.

Also start those damn Tau I've been talking about for months!

I kept reaching for the BFTBG and Nurgle's Rot, but didn't want to go overkill. They are best put on after varnishing anyway so I think I'll wait until I have a few more minis finished down the line to make sure the theme fits - a few skulls, termie helmet, stealer parts etc could still be added to match the SH minis

He looks fantastic - and I second the Kings of War suggestion - or at least giving the game a try.

I updated my March pics to one combined pic with all of the figures to take less space in the OP. While I was out there, I took a "challenge so far" pic showing all of the units I've completed so far this year as part of the challenge since we're at the halfway point:

It's important to note again that not every one of these figures was painted this year there are a few on both sides (Minas Tirith archers and Black Numenorians) where significant numbers of the models were painted before this year - but the units were finished this year as part of the challenge. Others (Forlong the Fat, Undead Ogres) were already started but had stalled out for months or longer - again - motivation for finishing them being a key point of the challenge.

I'm getting a bit of a Virtual On vibe with that Hunter.

Put a couple of white block areas on it and you'd have a nice 2P Raiden from that game.

Good times, good times... now I need to hunt down one of those old Hasegawa model kits...

So if you don't mind, how big is the hunter? The price they recently deployed for those on their website is pretty darn competitive, even if it only fits a 40mm base, but I don't think I've seen too many comparison shots in the wild, as it were.

Those Algoryns are looking awesome.

I guess we can call this a "stretch goal" if you want

I need to finish up his skelebros and then I can get on to some Orcs (or maybe Infinity... but I'd like to do orcs).

So I bugged Azazelx and he's shooting for a round 2 for the second half of the year. Anyone thought up some projects already? I'm torn myself, I'd like to continue plugging away at one concrete "army" sized project (could even still be orcs!) but the 'new faction every month' approach people have been doing is cool and could really push me to finish some Infinity or knock out some TNT warbands.

I've still got more than enough Ogres to go a 2nd round. Still plugging away on this initial batch. At least I've almost got my first Mournfangs done.

I think round 2 for me is getting lots of DeepWars and ShadowSea stuff finished...

....and then I'm thinking of randomly pulling a handful of random Bones models out to paint for skirmish games. Maybe every 5 or 6 models has to constitute a new warband?

Edged 10 Space Hulk floor tiles last night. The collage shows the stack before painting, the difference with and without paint and then the ten all painted up:

I suppose this is my official stretch goal 1 because it's actually completed. The two models are still ongoing.

Sorry for sort of photo-dumping, just finally found a way to keep my motivation and productivity with the hobby up. I sometimes find it hard to do work on a model of an evening, but edging a couple of tiles is far more manageable and I am reducing the amount of stuff that I need to get done

Well here is the update for today.

That's the last of my 2000 points for this army. I still need to re-address the giant, which I have an Idea about, but otherwise thats 27 models in a month. More of these will be next as the stretch goal.....just as soon as I find where I put them . But my goal for April was to complete my first ever fully painted army (2000 points). Done. 30+ years of screwing around has come to a close. Now there's still base work that can be done for these guys, but I consider them done to tabletop standard right now. I have a cunning plan for their movement trays, but that is another story, which might be completed by the end of the month, but could also just play with these riding on the green GW trays till then.

completed army shot.

Onto some stretch goals

Neither the Gondor nor the Undead will be finished by then, but I find I keep getting out other interesting models and units out to paint when I finish the "pledge" for the month, only to have to shove them back into the background as the months speed by to concentrate on the "pledge" topic again.

The Gondor figures have an actual end in sight. There's still quite a lot of them to go, but it's still quite achievable. The undead.... well there's a real serious lot of them. Hundreds and hundreds. Not a short-term project, and I may easily join them in death before they're all done (seriously - because there's a LOT of them).

SO, for round two, I'm going to go for "Gondor+1". Which reminds me of that South Park episode "Faith+1" every time I say or think it. The plan will be that I finish at least a unit (or hero, war machine, monster, etc) for Gondor each month, plus one unit (or hero, war machine, vehicle, monster, team, warband, etc) for any other force from any other game. This will motivate me not only to finish the next unit of Gondormans each month until they're all finally bloody done, but it'll also incentivise me to finish the Night Goblin Netter/Clubbers, and the Skaven Plague Censer Bearers, and the Viking Hearthguard, and Be'Lakor, and the Marauder Giant (remember those two?) and the Minotaur Tactical Squads, and anything and everything else that's slowly clogging up my desk without getting completed. I might even do some more undeads.

As long as I finish at least one Gondor unit, and something that can legitimately be considered a "unit" of any kind for another game (especially KoW, 40k, SAGA, SBG, etc), then I'm good. This is just enough structure so that I can't finish off a single Plague Marine and call it a unit. Or a random Moria goblin or and claim it as "a unit for SOB&H". Even though it probably could be.

That's a great and cunning plan to get one army completed, just don't let the other model trick you into painting them first.

I am pretty certain I am going to move onto Bretonnia next. Have had a lot of success from home town gamers contributing to my army plan and almost have enough of the models I need to do both of the Bretonnian armies i wanted to do. Just need 14 damn horses.......

So what that means is once the Nids are done I will do oone of the Bretonnian ones. Open to voting on which one first.

What's the difference between them?

Bretonnian Army - Baron Reinholf’s Household
Bretonnian Army - The "Vain" Quest for the Grail, the 11th Crusade of Araby

Ah, Baron Reinholf's Household is a Peasant that has somehow managed to be elevated to that of a Knight so its his budding fiefdom, not many Knights as no noble would be seen dead with him, so heaps of peasants (Men-at-Arms, Archers, Mounted Yeoman etc). The Vain quest is a crusading force so lots of Questing Knights and Knight Errant.

first stretch goal of the monthfor me is completed, introducing the Avatar of the Abyss (counts as mammoth with balista)

which brings me up to the current state of the army.

The flaming Monkey is looking more and more out of place next to these guys, he'll have to be allied in or something

about 2200 points of Kings of War Ogre counts as.

Last weekend, I noticed that a unit of spearmen just needed command to be finished. I'd had a pair of normal spearmen in the front rank who had been removed in order to make a horde-sized unit when KoW went to second edition, and the unit had just been sitting there with a big hole in it ever since. So I grabbed out a command pair and got them painted!

Which in turn completed this unit!

I've split the Airfleet box, so next month I'll be doing the battleships. I wanted to focus this month on working on my backlog more than anything, so I should hopefully have a lot of stretch goals this month. I've already completed the first one, the Proteus combat mech.

Wrapped up my 30k Heavy Support Squad today, and I have a lot more planned for this week. Tomorrow I'm priming and starting work on 16 Tactical Marines, the Imperial Space Marine I grabbed on the weekend, and my Bane Thrall Officer and Standard, and hopefully getting at least the marines close to done. Once they're finished it's onto the Thralls and Warwitch Deneghra, and after that finishing up as many Skaven models as I can (the Skaven are mostly just basing jobs, although my Clanrats are not going to be based anytime in the near future due to the sheer amount of them). Pics will definitely be up by Sunday, although how much I will get done remains to be seen.

Man, I love this thread! There's so much amazing work on here from the past 4 months.

If there is a round 2, I am definitely jumping in. I have such a hard time motivating myself to paint, and it's led to 3 armies sitting on my shelves unhappily bare.
I'd just have to decide if I want to try and start working on my 8k nid army, my 3k bretonnia army, or continue working on my 30k Raven Guard... Or I could start working on the 100+ cultists I just bought for a Imperialis Militia 30k project... Too much plastic crack!

Thanks Theo. I'm pretty much going through a "don't give a feth" period at work with regard to all of the additional duties I have right now., Getting the core stuff done as best I can, and then when I'm feeling a bit better I'll just catch up on the additional planning and reviews and such then. People there are aware of what's going on, it's just a difficult and stressful time there for everyone right now, and not helped for me by the family issues.

I have to admit, while painting the same two things over and over have been tedious, it's also been a real motivator to get units of both the Gondor and Undead armies painted and I've managed to get a lot done.

There'll definitely be a round two and you're welcome to join. There are a few people who have expressed interest in jumping on and a few who haven't been seen since their initial posts, so I'll probably try to fill those gaps without letting it get too much bigger.

I've just finished another unit of Gondor (from metal to done this time) so I hope to get them photographed this weekend. Still waiting for the varnish to dry and then it's flock time before photos can happen.

I got these two finished last weekend. They're both "Undead" but neither falls easily into the KoW army list, but they might end up being my submission for the Undead part of my monthly pledge anyway. We'll see what the next week brings...

No Banshees in KoW, sadly - and I've already got plenty of wraiths and wights. With KoW2's insistence on not having units of single-model large infantry there aren't a lot of options for "small monsters" either for the ethereal.

I haven't quite got the last 2 pages from the thread in there yet, but some of you guys keep churning out the models and so I'd be changing the pic every 2 days with all your extras - so I might do a couple of them at the start of May.

On that note, anyone who's done and pretty much dusted with April can start to put in their final photos if they like and I'll try to catch up on updates this weekend.

Having only just finished them, I'm not sure yet. Probably Foot Guard as befits veterans. If I move the spears to the front I might count them as having 2-handed weapons. Unless there's a more fitting entry in the Basliean army list, or the Not-Bret list or the "other half of the Empire" list. The mix is very much a thing in LotR SBG, though.

Feth! Has is really been 3 weeks since I last looked at this thread? Amazing work since then everyone.

Sorry that I've done nothing for a couple of months. For various reasons that I'd rather not go into beyond saying that severe bouts depression are involved, I've had a complete lack of hobby interest since the middle of March. I seem to be coming back to wanting to paint something now though.

Bit late for me to get anything done for April but I'll see what I can do for May. No promises yet as depression is to put it bluntly a bitch to deal with and very good at rearing it's ugly head at about the half way point in any project I start.

I might move away from doing any ME stuff for a bit, a fresh something or other might be just the ticket to make me feel enthusiastic.

BIG EDIT!!!!!:

Ok scratch that thing about having nothing for April. After making this post some inspiration struck and I started painting the minis from a boardgame I bought recently, Fleet Commander Ignition. This game allegedly came with pre painted minis, if pre painted means bare plastic with coloured blobs or lines for engines and a nearly invisible faction logo then I guess that's true. Needless to say they were not up to scratch. So I've only gone and painted the whole set of 14 minis in an afternoon.

Here's a group shot:

The Hegemony of Amycles Fleet:

The League of Phoebe Fleet:

I guess you can call that lot my April submission. Not my best paint jobs ever but a huge improvement on the standard minis. If the game is any good I'll probably pick up at least the first expansion and maybe another base box to allow either larger 2 player games or 2v2 team games so I guess there's a good chance of more spaceships from me in the future. Even if the game's no good with a quick rebasing these minis would be great for something like Full Thrust. Not bad for £15

Part 1 of this month's pledges are here, as well as a 'surprise' model. The first lot of photos are all for Warmachine/Hordes, as my Warhammer stuff isn't quite finished yet (it will be in a couple of hours, so I'll post them when they're done). So here we have Warwitch Deneghra and the Officer and Standard Bearer for my Bane Thrall unit, finishing off my current lot of Cryx models, and the surprise, Maelok the Dreadbound. Maelok will be followed up by some more gators in a couple months time, as I aim to not get any new models until Warmachine/Hordes MkIII is released, and I have cleared most of my backlog.

I honestly forgot what my goal was for this month. I had to check the first post to double check!

I guess it was Ogres. Good thing they're done! I should probably finish up the current batch sitting on my table to go with the completed guys!

I did actually get 90% of my Tau collecting box put together, considering I've been talking about doing it since January....

Maybe next month. If I don't get too distracted by those new Orruk models, which depending upon their size, could quite well end up with my Ogres...

I've managed to get 10 more zombies done, from sprue to (almost) completed. Just need to add some final BFTBG, add flock and rim the bases. They'll combine with the two I did last year to make a "regiment" of 12. A bit pissweak for zombies, but I'll add more later.

No zombie should ever be underestimated.

Well I've been less than productive today, I should have some painting time in the morning where I intend on getting 36 more figures done.......yes 36. They are the mulfins, and they are only snotling sized, but they still count . They already have their yellow basecoat and a bone colored belly done, just need to pick out the back spines and the eyes, they are very basic. Also the mountain that I found has gotten some base coat painting done on it, but I'm not too concerned with getting it done anytime soon due to it's size and no use in game.

After April is done I think I'm taking a break from this army for a little while, I haven't nailed down my next project for May yet, I'm feeling the need to scratch build something, which takes away from painting time.

Those are really great cultists . I like the pallid skin tones you did on them, still makes them look more human than alien.

Really hoping I can finish the last highlight on the blue skin in the next day or two, to get my Trygon done in time for the start of the May commitments. LOL

So close to having this Trygon done. SO many layers of highlights..... really looking forward to painting some smaller models.

Ulf that Tyranid is beautiful Well done. Possibly the male version of the pink tyranid cartoony style that I love.

with April pretty much done here is my update ported over from my P&M blog:

Thanks everyone for the feedback
April has been a very impressive month for me painting wise. I had an actual concept for this army going into it, and it did not vary much from the plan. So with a little cheating (4 models were done last month in the last couple days of that month, but I'm finished a couple days early this month so in a months time ) I completed my 2000pt. kings of war counts as ogre army with a whole bunch of stretch goals thrown in.

here is the army shot

so that's 76 models in the last 30 days (36 of the mulfins in the last 2 days really bumped the total up, but People have said that individual models each count as one right? and they count as red goblins (with appropriate yellow bellied rule) in the game for me.

here is a shot of the mulfins, I decided to just do a simple yellow tone for them to help them match the army but not look like molten rock.

there is only 3 poses to those models, but they make a great line dancing formation .

Not great but I'm quite happy since they're the first things I've painted in a couple of months and only took an afternoon.

I used to use Tamiya's Clear Red for the same kind of thing, but I prefer GW's style of acrylic, so I tend to use BFTBG these days, despite the ridiculous name. So that's a yes.

Nice work, Nick. While I often have a vague idea of what I might paint at the start of a month, that can often change. There's no need to declare your target at the start of each month or anything.

Thanks Azazelx. I'm just happy to be painting again after a couple of months of not wanting to do anything.

I think I'm close to knowing what to do next month, of course that could all change tomorrow as there's a wargames show on. If I spot anything I must paint my plans will change.

Still lurking the awesome stuff in this thread and quietly exalting them. Was a bit sick after I got back from my trip to the UK (got a cold at Brussels South train station I was patted down and the like on a windy platform, must've been the big black army carrying bag), but enough with the puking up of intestines and the like already!

After the mad flurry of trying to (and failing!) to get my tanks all done in time for the trip I've decided that my next project will be an easier one that I'll be taking my time with, having spent most of last night and this morning cleaning and sticking these together:

Mind, it will still be a simple paintjob of boltgun metal, washes and some copper in there to mix things up, but it will be a nice change after all those tanks.

I'm hoping to get started on the chap on the far right in the front row first, he's my personal favourite for the time being.

Whenever I'm done with that squad I'll move onto two different projects for my Heresy stuff..

Spoiler:

Well I have had a very productive streak and have finished off my Tyranids for April, which in fact is the culmination of the army. So I am into the 4th month of the year and have knocked off the first 2,000 point army of the year.

Here is my April results (please use this one in the initial post):

Damn that's a lot of bugs, it's photos like that that both make me want to get in to 40k and run a mile to get away from it. I love the lore and look of 40k (when it isn't obscured by skulls) but there's no way I could tackle a project like that without going mad. I think I'd have to limit myself to little 500 point armies which I can spend lots of time doing little conversions for. You know the sort of thing I mean, an Inquisitor plus retinue or maybe a crusade era non compliant human army.

Oh bugger, I'm just going to give myself expensive ideas now aren't I?

Anyway, loads of respect for painting all those Nids so far this year Archer.

Well I've got no idea when I'll be able to play it and I've not had a proper read of the rules yet. The rules are free on the website so I'll have a good look through them at some point (only got quick start rules in the box). Having built the minis they really are nice. Just be warned they are restic, I personally have no problems with that material but I know some do. My main problem now is what to paint first.

I'll give a big thumbs up for Wrath of Kings. Restic or not, the material works for most of the figures- it doesn't hurt that a lot of them are on the larger side. The weapons are all ABS as well, so they've got a bit of bend to them, whereas the figures themselves are nice and sturdy.

Plus there's some really cool new figures coming down the pipeline for every faction.

Rules are pretty simple as well.

That they are (just started reading the rulebook), just over 20 pages of game rules in a nearly 250 page rulebook with the rest being fluff and unit stats (which are on cards included with the minis anyway). Being concise like that but with loads of fluffy goodness already makes WoK the sort of game I like.

Oh I've decided to work on the House Goritsi Shield Breaker first, I just can't resist the thought of painting a werewolf that carries a "huge axe" and wears steampunk power armour.

Now that May is cometh, pledge time it is! I'm aiming to finally finish some things that have been in the works for several months, namely the remaining Tyranids I have for a friend and basing/touching up my Clanrats. Once this is done (probably get started on before but whatever ) I will be doing up a Deathjack and Gatorman Posse for Warmachine/Hordes, and a semi-related goal of mine for this month is to improve my miniature photography, so fingers crossed you'll get some better quality images from me soon.

P.S. Azazelx, would I be able to get my project changed in the OP to say that I'm working on Warmahordes stuff as well? Another thing I just noticed is that my pledges for April aren't there, they're mid-way down page 26 if that helps!

I can't remember what my actual April pledge was. I think it was Ogres. I'll get a shot of them all together this weekend, as I certainly painted a fair amount of them.

I'm thinking my May pledge will be to finish my Varanguard, and then something big to go with them- either a Chaos Lord on a Manticore, or Archaon on his giant dragon. That one will be a daunting task for sure!

Totally OT but there's no proper Knight Gundam kit at the appropriate scale.

I would have owned one for some time already, outside of the Gundam Cloth Real Model toy from the mid 90s that is quite expensive.

Musha Gundams are another story. Or The new SD Knights. But a proper Master Grade, or Real Grade, or hell, even a High Grade Knight Gundam has been something I have been pining for now for many MANY years.

If Barzam is starting his knight, I should probably get mine done as well, seeing as how we split a Nemesis box.

Make with the instructions Barzam, so I can finish the thing!

I may have to resort to painting up a boar rider and slapping him on the dragon turtle to be a krudger on slasher. We'll see. I was trying to get the archer unit done but meh, they aren't inspiring me just yet (except the mawbeast who is done).

Well shoot.

Gotta readjust my May painting pledge (as well photograph my April stuff still).

I *WILL* finish the Varanguard this month, but I need to take care of my kid's school project.

He needs to build a replica of one of the California Missions (part of the 4th grade curriculum here in CA).

His mission- Mission San Francisco Solano, the final mission built at the end of what's called "The King's Road," the path that connected all the missions together.

Anyways, my dad is really into scratchbuilding stuff, so with nothing but cardboard, some dowels, and PVA glue, he went and made this.

And why, would you look at that? It's even at the right scale!

The actual mission, for reference:

So yeah, that's my painting pledge for May, because it needs to be done by the 16th!

Ok, since I've got quite a lot of work done so far I figure it's time for a little teaser of my first mini for the month.

Snow/tundra bases seem to be a thing I enjoy doing so I'll be doing the whole Wrath of Kings 2 player starter with them. The rock is just a piece of garden slate (painted obviously). I put loads down in my garden last year and still have about half a bag hanging around, perfect basing material. Additionally the base has a load of polyfiller (spackle) in it to built up the ground layer to be level with the top of the base. I'll be putting rocks on all the special and leader bases with the regular grunts just getting plain non rock bases. This will hopefully make the special and leader units stand out a bit amongst the grunts. This base is for the Goritsi Shieldbreaker, I just couldn't resist painting a steampunk power armoured, axe wielding werewolf as my fist mini from this set. The mini itself is coming along very nicely, just got to do a little more tidying of the base coat then it'll be washes, highlights and getting it glued to the base.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well that took less time than I expected. Here's my first completed mini for May.

And a comparison shot showing just how big this thing really is. Look at that puny Karist.

On to the next mini, not sure what it'll be yet.

Glad you like it. I think you're right there's a lot of conversion potential with that mini. A pair of wrist mounted guns could look quite cool or a large spear/glaive style of weapon. I'm definitely looking forward to painting the rest of the set. First thing I want to do though is finish all the bases, got all of them painted and done the ground texture, they just need snow and tufts now.

Hey Azazelx, you and your family are in my thoughts.

Not much happening with me on the hobby front since the weekend. Unfortunately my old brushes are starting to fall apart so I've had to order some replacements, until they arrive I'm kinda stuck not doing much. Still on the plus side I've been able to get the rest of the Wrath of Kings 2 player box undercoated and indulged in a little mass basing session (which killed off an old brush in the process).

Mmm bases. The ones with rocks on them are for leader and special minis the plain are for regular troops. Should make the more important minis stand out nicely.

Anyway, that gives me little excuse not to get the rest of the set painted up right? Well we'll see I am a hobby butterfly. The next mini I'll be painting the Ashmen Hakar which is acting as the test for the planned paint scheme for the other faction. Once I've got that done I should be able to start painting more than one mini at once and really make some progress.

Thanks, I'm really happy with how they turned out myself, previously I've tended to be the, paint it and stick some grass to it type. It's been something of a learning experience to attempt something more complex like these.

For Azazel, I got a couple of stretch goals done today.

First, a surprise stretch goal! I painted up my (very) small pledge from Brigade Games' Apocalyptic Wastelander Kickstarter.

Then, I finished an actual planned stretch, Nemethis the Sacrilegious Devourer Priest from Confrontation.

I'm back. Hopefully/probably, though I may be a little sporadic for a little while, as I'm still dealing with the personal stuff and work is heading into a very busy season (again). Very cool to see the stuff finished above in the last week or so. I started painting again a little while ago, and the first things aren't ready to show, and I've got nothing challenge-related done so far. It could very well be just a pair of character models for this month for me instead of the 2-3 units I'd planned to have done in addition to the characters.

At some stage, I'll fix my photo for last month. I've updated the OP but it's possible that I've missed someone's work, or accidentally placed May models into April. If I've done either of those things, please just post here and I'll fix it.

Late as hell getting my April submission photo in but things have been a bit hectic of late. Didn't get a huge amount finished last month but very happy with the stuff that get get finished.
So here Aprils finished figs.

For May am going to get the Thanatar finished (which I have as of last week) finish up the 3 stealers and 3 termies from space hulk, build and paint a Mad Larkin vignette (need to get a move on on that one) and as a stretch goal, finish painting on The Nurse. Fingers crossed!!!

What's this another mini already? I'm doing rather well by my standards this month.

That's the Ashman Hakar from the WoK starter box. I'm working on the regular Ashmen next, got most of the base colours done already and I hope I'll have them done in the next few days.

I almost thought that Hakar was a LotR figure with the colors. Interesting choice.

I'm so used to seeing the Ashmen so hard up in blacks and reds it through my brain for a mental loop there.

Interested to see what you do with the rest of the unit, especially the Pelgarth ladies- they're in the starter, aren't they?

I thought I'd do something a little different, I wasn't aiming for a LOTR look but now you mention it I can see what you mean. I like the look of the studio Nasier paint scheme but I hate painting red so I changed things a bit and got a little carried a way. Not got any Pelgarth, they're in the faction starter set not the 2 player starter.

Denethor, Steward of Gondor. More pics here.
Due to the events of this month, I've gone for a single character for my Gondor submission in May. The Undead unit was pretty much done a few weeks ago, and I'll get the last touches done this weekend. If I get anything more done this month, that'll be great, but I'm not going to be too fussed...

Always a joy to see well-done zombies. Especially when you manage to get some variety out of Mantic's limited set of options!

On my end, a pair of long over due tanks (these were supposed to be done back in April, but the gakker that I am, I got distracted), finally done! Except for commanders of both vehicles, but details yes..?

The second Dracosan armoured transport of my Solar Auxilia cohort. I decided to keep the decals simple, like with the first one and went with nice contrasting images that don't stand out too much from the overall model.

The Malcador "Dauntless", with extra overpriced decals from Dust. I've decided to have most of the crew positions, minus the commander and main gunner up top (due to a lack of space and more name decals in the same style), paint their names near to their crew positions. Not shown (due to a dodgy decal on the other side) is the name "Amanda" on the left sponson. All that remains now is to track down one more "Dauntless" name decal and to seal it all in.

Now, on Sunday I should be picking up some new brushes, meaning I can start work on those Veletarii I wanted to do weeks ago!

No problem. I tend to do the current month about once a week. Pretty much when I get around to updating/maintaining the thread which will usually be sometime on the weekend. Sometimes I might not do them at all for a week or two - the main focus is to have them all up at the end of the month rather than in the OP immediately. There's been a couple of months when I've only put them all up at the end. It's nothing personal, you'll notice that neither of my own pics for this month are in the OP yet.

I have done a lot less than I had hoped to do this month but I have at least done something....

Capitol Light Infantry. I have nearly finished this army now, I am half way through my Banshee Linebreakers so I will get them finished this week. After that I have either another squad of Light Infantry or some Purple Sharks to paint. I already have the Sharks but I'm not sure what condition they are in....

Epic Ork Boyz and the Nobz stand I painted last month. I have 1 more stand of Boyz to paint and that will be me finished all the infantry I need.

Nice work, Puffin. Another unit is still a good thing!

I've updated the OP with everything I'm aware of - as always if I've missed anything please LMK. It's time to start wrapping up May with photos and such as we head into the final month of this first Tale of Gamers that I've run here.

I do intend to run a second one in 2016, from July-December. I'll post it up in the last 7-10 days of June, so please wait until then to state your interest. It'll essentially be much the same as this one, but it'll give people a chance to change armies and will probably have slightly fewer signups - (though probably the same number of active participants!)

Well I've got a dragon turtle painted already. I just assembled and primed a slightly modified orc gore rider to serve as a rider for the turtle. So I'll have a bit of a ramshackle krudger on slasher for the month. If I can paint one orc in the next few days. With Monday off for the holiday... maybe I can get that done.

It's not that I haven't been doing anything, just not much. Finished 9 barbarians(ish) to use as tribals for a TNT warband just now, but they aren't the theme

I think I really need to do a block for the final month's entry though. Right now there's one regular infantry block, a block of cavalry, two mini blocks of swarm chaff, a foot character, and soon to be a monster mounted character. Maybe if I could get the trolls done. Or the orc archer unit that's primed and I started. I couldn't get into the goblin archer the first time I tried but we'll see.

Torn about the next competition. I started out pretty strong with the orcs but fell behind pretty hard. Not sure if it's really them or not. I'd like to have my first finished fantasy force in forever (my empire and skaven have fallen to ruins and no longer count as nearly complete) but if I define a looser set of parameters I may be able to tough out stronger results. Something like a batch of Infinity or a TNT warband a month. I'd have to pick one, of course, but still.

Really nice work lately guys, this is an inspiring group project.

I'm in a similar boat. I've managed to get something done each month for both Undead and Gondor, but I'm getting sick to death of both of them, as much as I'd like to have all of the figures painted. I think for the second half of the year I'll aim for one of either rather than one of each. I'll still go for a unit of something else as a monthly stretch aim, but if I open it up I'll be able to have a lot more fun painting.

Lovely stuff Archer and Weety, got my GoA stuff done just a few minutes ago, so here are the 12 miniatures. The tale has been a great motivator, otherwise I would have painted very little this month.

Namely a Concord Mandarin NuHu (with Nano Probe), Concord Strike Squad and a Algoryn AI Assault Squad:

Excuse the dull pictures, it has been very overcast today:

More spoilered to not clog up the thread:

I will be considering June's entry models in a few days. Good luck to any last minute entrants.

Your stuff *almost* makes me want to pick up some Antares stuff Thraxas. Very nice. Liking the floaty guy especially.

I guess I'll do a last minute post of all the stuff I painted this month. I think it was chaos stuff. I think I did the Varanguard back at the beginning of the month.

I'm going to try and finish the entire Bloodbound unit before Friday. I think I can do it!

I started the bulk of them this weekend, but the ones that were further along than the rest were all painted this month as well.

Friday is my deadline because I'll be on the plane that morning with no access to painting tools or toys for the next month, so I think I'm going to have to sit out June (but double down on July!).

Some great output there Highlord, I found all the skin on the Bloodhound a pain to pain but it is a great looking unit and it looks like you will have them all done in short order.

JiJ: That is near as damn it a miniature painted every two days, most painters would be stoked with that. I like seeing your historicals as it is an area of wargaming that I know nothing about, nice work on the KOW Ogres too.

Az: Good to see that you have been able to get back to your brushes, your stretch goals are especially good this month.

Hope to see a few more entries for last month trickle through.
