This teaser was pretty big step in locking down and refining our pipeline as we move forward into production of the full film.
Although this teaser contains only Grey Knights (and some servitors!), The Lord Inquisitor will feature many great characters and a truly awesome plot – written, of course, by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Along with music from composer Adam Harvey (Ultramarines), we’re more than excited about what the future has in store.
From a technical standpoint, it is also important to note that this trailer was rendered completely in real-time. This represents a new era in independent, CGI filmmaking. We’re also using the currently unreleased CryEngine Cinebox. It’s an excellent solution to our team’s needs, and we’re really happy with how things are turning out.
Fantastic work. It's amazing to me this how much better this looks than what GW actually backed for production. Best of luck getting this finished as it looks wonderful!
Rather than being a series of rendered still images played like a cartoon it's rendered at a high speed as a continuous and potentially interactive visual environment. The frame rate it's displayed in is potentially limited only by the format they distribute it and the viewers hardware.
Love the servitors. If it had an accompanying squeaky wheel sound it would be perfect.
This is the dedication and time GW should have put into the Ultramarines movie, which shows how lifeless GW is when the fans have more passion than the company in its product.
I'm surprised GW hasn't stepped up to involve itself in this considering the quality presented and the fact that one of it's most popular Black Library authors is involved.
@ medium of death: the black carapace is sub-dermal. The plugs are the only visible part, added once the carapace has matured. Mind you, that was from my "3rd war for armageddon" white dwarf, don't know if it's still legit.
And yes, the Black Carapace is implanted over the Astartes' ribcage. There, it grows into his body, and his armor can directly connect to his spine. It is sub-dermal.
I'm curious about the real-time rendering. While it does look very good as is, surely pre-rendering allows you to make it look better? Are you able to pre-render using the same engine?
From what I have read, GW are okay with this, but I haven't seen anything definitive.
It doesn't have the issue of Damnatus with German IP Law issue, so it may be as long as he isn't making money off of it, then he can fill his boots, or as long as GW is allowed to slap IP banners all over the thing then no one can make "Lord Inquisitor" miniatures.
Hopefully it is allowed a full DVD release but no idea if that's ever a reality.
As I would rather not have to download from odd torrents. However the visuals alone blow 'Ultramarine' out of the water.
This continues to be the worst tease EVER! Absolutely stunning trailer just like the first. Cannot wait for this to be released. As a 40k fan seeing an astartes brought to life in this is awesome. I think you really captured the giganticism and power of the astartes without really showing too much.

I suppose short stories are pointless compared to novels, eh? Anton Chekhov was just spinning his wheels?
As others have said this trailer looks amazing. This is the first I have heard of this project, but I am very interested in seeing things develop. Kudos to everyone involved, the trailer is absolutely gorgeous and nails the atmosphere of 40k. Those servitors...

Each to his own and all that, I find short stories are pretty pointless yes, hence my remark, I am not a fan of Chekhov either.
It looks like they nailed the atmosphere and everything, I never went for short stories is all and I was pretty gutted to hear they had dropped it to a 15 minutes.

Fair enough, different strokes and all that.
Telling a coherent story in a shorter span of time is often more difficult than spinning a longer narrative, and those who are good at one form of story telling might not be good at the other. Hopefully the truncated run time won't have an effect on the quality of the finalized storyline.
I hope you had a nice christmas and a cool beginning for this year You all know the project is currently on “hold” and so I had a lot of time to think about Lordi from time to time and develop new ideas and things like that Of course I also already thought that Lordi is doomed because of the rules of Games Workshop, but it seems that the wheel has changed
Shortly before Christmas I finally got an answer and it was more than positive To be honest I think I had the biggest smile in my face in the year 2011 I will not post any mails in my blog as this is a private conversation between GW and me, but what I can tell you is that GW loves Lordi and everything what me and my team created. So GW really wants to see this project finished and they want me to have a kind of license that allows me to make non commercial Warhammer 40.000 movies. I mean, how cool is that? I never thought that GW would be so cool to this project and this is beyond my expectations – now I don’t have to hide anymore with this project, but can look in a proper future for Lordi.
However GW told me that this is a promise for now only and they can not guarantee me that this really becomes true. They have to see for themselfes if that is possible legally with their IP. But they want to get this through and Im optimisitc that this will work So we still need to cross our fingers, but it looks really really good for The Lord Inquisitor
So not a ton of worries about GWde-railing it if they haven't done so in over 2 years now...

Reading that back, I do sound overly harsh on it, that was not my intention, what there is looks awesome, thats for sure.
I would caution that even the Ultramarines previews didn't look bad either so let's not judge a book by its cover. I agree though that this trailer and the last looked quite nice.
I love how these guys are doing this totally of their own power and time and their trailers look better than the entirety of the Space Marine movie that GW paid for.
Man, you guys do great work. Really cool stuff, can't wait for more!
It looks good, certainly a million times better than that official attempt.
A few things bothered me though..
- Some of the sounds are really out of place sounding, like the vase shattering and the gunshot, they sound like poor quality stock audio
- The copy-pasting of the same model Guardsmen and Space Marines at the parade is quite obvious, especially when the all have the same limited animation going on, which even when not in sync really stands out
- Some of the characters do a lot of gesturing and moving about to convey something, they look awfully busy
That said, really looking forward to the full thing.
It's an interesting take on Terra, perhaps a bit too clean and sleek looking, but an interesting take nonetheless.
Watched it twice, shared about an hour ago with some groups. Fun things is reading Praetorian of Dorn, scene on Terra, look up at movie screen with M41 Holy Terra...just a beautiful combo. Love how they captured the feel of 40K.
That was amazing, I'd love to see what they could do with proper funding. I really liked that it didn't shy away from the darkness, strangeness and brutality of the Imperium, as well as having main characters that were not square jawed action hero's(with British accents as well ). All things I think mainstream movie types would have issues with.
Indeed, a most impressive spectacle. Some other elements show their true origins as a fan-project, but I think that's just because the visuals are really that great. Far better than many studios produce.
While it's completely in pipe dream territory, it would be fantastic if GW found a way to get the money to fund this as a proper film. A whole host of reasons that will never happen, but still, so much they've had to battle through as just a passion project that it'd be interesting to see if they could get better commitments and thus progress with funding.
Very impressive. Marcus seems like a really interesting character and I'm very curious where the plot will go. Apparently the lip syncing problem is due to the original language being in German. I kind of wish we could have gotten the German version with English subtitles. The German language works really well for 40k, I think.

That was my only disappointment. I too would love to see it that way.

Agreed. When I saw the same scratches on all the marines shoulders I couldn't stop looking at it. It doesn't matter how good something is, if there's a blemish then that's what our mind fixates on- we were warned about it in film class. That's the way our brain works.
That said, this was really well done. Excellent quality and exectution.
Thank you to the people who put a LOT of work on this.
I was telling a friend about this yesterday and then the prologue just popped up on my youtube page not soon after. Really impressive work overall. I love how he has envisioned the upper levels of Terra, it has an almost Parisian feel to it though I would like to see some more dark parts of the city later in the movie.
Other than the sound design (gun shot and vase breaking) I think it is perfect. I would like to see a dubbed German version as the lip sync really drags you out of the moment.
The animation is top notch. I paused and rewound the parts with the noble scrambling around just to admire all the little details.
Still holding out that with GW under new leadership this project will get a bit more support and maybe even lead to a full length movie at some point. One can only hope!
Very cool. Minor bits here and there that could be improved on, but as a whole, pretty much the best piece of 40k video I have seen so far. GW would be stupid not to sponsor this!
That was pretty damned cool. Some sounds were off (not the music - that was fantastic), but really my only criticism is that Terra's immediate orbit seemed very empty. Shouldn't Terra have tons of gak flying around it, from defensive platforms to ship yars to just Corucscant+ levels of space traffic?
Erasmus, who leads the TLI project, works on Star Citizen for a while now, employed at the Frankfurt CIG studio.
The amount of money such quality animation for an at least 80 minutes feature film is beyond everything GW could ever afford to pay for. It would also have trouble bring that money back, to be fair. Warhammer 40k is a small affair. People have unrealistic expectations. And GW has pointed out several times that the problem of giving out a licence for a movie is the fact there is no one out there interested to put a lot of money into a 40k film and they could not find someone who is also accepting the clause GW is the one selling the toys for it. Which of course GW cannot handle otherwise. Lego would never give out a licence for Lego films which allows the contractor to sell a toy line accompanying it.
The Lord Inquisitor is a great project. Fanmade. A lot of time spent without getting paid for.
But it does not fix the problems a 40k feature film has been struggling with. This is not going to start a new era of 40k movies. Maybe the Horus Heresy will be popular enough one day to find investors for such a project. Being New York Times best seller books could help with it.
I liked the Ultramarines movie by the way. For such a low amount of money they had at hand it was okay and I especially enjoyed the documentaries on the DVD. They made me appreciate the effort put into it and Ultramarines was entertaining enough given all the restrictions they had to cope with. I read the comic intro, watched the film, then the documentaries. You cannot ignore it was a labour of love too.
Fingers crossed the overall 20 minutes Lord Inquisitor film can be finished. It is great to see this universe getting visualized in animated form. The prologue has been an amazing start.
Yes, let's just please keep Hollywood out of this okay. Last thing we want is a Space Marine fething a Sister of Battle after wiping out all the Orks in a decisive battle that saves mankind forever.
Glorious. Really glorious. The only negative is that it is so cool that it makes me even sadder that GW completely forget the best aspect of their setting (No Inq game :( ).
It is so good that I can't believe nobody at GW will fund this. If they have any brain, they should use it to promote their setting and even introduce a new inq game (SG has ressurected after all)

I'm just proud of GW for allowing it. Hopefully that will translate to them actually funding future products like this.
I thought AD-B had something to do with the story but that was long ago when the project started. It's great GW isn't stopping this and can't wait for the whole thing.
It's not perfect, but it's a fan creation, ultimately, so a lot can be forgiven.
And it gets so much so very, very right
I love the way he's built Terra, and the sound in the sequence in the parade building up from the guardsmen, to the Marines, to the dreadnoughts, to the Inquisitor's float gave me tingles...

Precisely how I feel, I cannot and would not criticize this, as a labor of love, as a fan work, it's mind blowing. It genuinely made me happy and impressed me hugely.
I don't like the cocky showboat inquisitor though. As someone on YT put it, he acts like a kid who has just stolen his father's keys or sth. Obviously my opinion can change after watching the whole thing etc.
Also the IG on parade looks fake, copy and paste too visible.
Nitpicks though and can't change how impressive it is, truely a labour or love. Or labour of hate rather (insert black metal riff, distant mumbling and a sound of a body torn apart heh.)

I actually like the cocky attitude presented. Every other time I can picture an Inquisitor as very grim and simply dedicated to their job and nothing more. This guy the attitude of how good he is and that's actually not a bad thing in this setting. Makes him somewhat more dynamic if you will.

He's the young sidekick... the cockiness works in that regard, and I'm wondering if the path that cockiness leads him along will turn out to be a part of the story arc.

Yeah, it bothered me a bit also at first. But then, I guess not all inquisitor are of the stoic/phlegmatic kind. And since it is not unusual for inquisitor to be recruited from the slumps of hive cities, it kind of make sense that some would be rude, cocky and arrogant
Amazing, this is über-levels of fan work. Agree with the above that the space around Terra is a little empty - The Moon would probably be glowing with all of the hive cities residing there and whatnot (if my 40k fluff knowledge serves me correctly). I'm sure that the sound fx and lip-sync can be polished up in time.
The young Inquisitor 3dge_l0rd_1337 has my heretic senses tingling, the way he finished off that babbling Imperial noble would certainly please the Dark Gods, I reckon.
But yes, this is fantastic stuff. Hopefully it does indeed attract further attention, and the creators get all of the recognition they deserve (that's if it all works out and proves popular, which by all present indications seems likely). 40k is the sci-fi universe that we all see copied in video games, but not the silver screen. Whether it be in feature-film format or the increasingly popular short-episode filled series, who knows what the future may bring. (And please don't sell short on your IP, GW!)

Put me in mind of Carl Thonius and the blonde guy in Eisenhorn, Inshubel (?), who were both cocky sods, perhaps this one is a very recently elevated interrogator?
Inquisitors spend their days hunting the worst people, and then executing them. Inquisitors are not inherently nice people.
I like the young inquisitor. He is cocky and arrogant, but from his point of view, why shouldn't he be ? He operates at the highest levels of authority and literally believes he is on the side of righteousness.
EVERY faction in 40K is an army of bad guys that sees themselves as the good guys.
He's also clearly an underling of the Lord Inquisitor, as shown by the skype message. He hasnt yet had his sotic grimdarkness burned into him through centuries of service.
Rather impressive, although, to be honest, it plays out like the beginning of a Final Fantasy game. Still, no complaints. I hope the maker keeps up the good work and is able to release in this lifetime

Also, he obviously has yet to sass something that has the capacity to slap that smirk off his face. Flouncing over a fat old heretic is one thing, trying it out on a daemonhost is another.
