Anyone doing anything special for the 4th of July? I’m curious if any of you foreign types celebrate it. I know I’ll occasionally celebrate other nation’s holidays as an excuse to do something different. Anyone using this Friday as an excuse to grill something and drink crappy american beer? I know it’s the one day a year I’ll drink a mainstream american beer (usually a budweiser). Just a token one, then I switch to something better.
Besides the beer, I’ll be doing the normal cookout fare. Burgers, hot dogs, probably some brats. Might do the hamburgers as mystery stuffed burgers, we’ll see how much prep work I feel like doing on Friday.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, and a long one if you are lucky.
4th of July is like the most American holiday ever.
It was kind of a thing when I lived near the Echelon/NSA base in Bad Aibling, because well, lots of Americans there, so it was fireworks for us Germans, too.
Aside from that, I never saw someone in Germany celebrating it.

I intend to be on a floaty in a pool with a margarita watching fireworks.
Grilling steaks with a buddy that's moving to the area. He's from London, so the steaks will be served on American Flag dishes, drinks served in American Flag glasses, and then we'll go watch the local Freedom Fireworks Display.
'Merica!
In return, he's taking us to a Star Wars Burlesque show in town on Saturday. "A Nude Hope"
If it's any good, we might go see Rack of Khan next month.
Going to be putting some OOP metal WHFB miniatures in a display case at the local FLGS and trying to make a cabinet full of old, worn blister packs look good.
I don't even work there, and I'm putting up the display...
Then it's off to RPG night to psychologically torture a room full of idiots!
Grilling steaks, beef ribs, and corn on the cob. Throw back one beer being I am dealing with fire works and maybe breaking out some weapons to go plinking a bit. Then rock on with fire works, and afterwards around the fire get somewhat hammered with Devil Cut and coke
Me and the dark cabal of America hating liberals are going to sit around drinking tea, eating falafel, and disparaging apple pie and country music.
Actually, I'm probably going to drink the latest batch of homebrew somewhere while watching things explode. I wish the STL fireworks were at the Arch this year. I actually get the opportunity for up close viewing, and they move them. :(
My dad and I going to watch the local 1/4 mile car race track. They do an "amateur race night" on the 4th where you bring in any old junker you want and try to get through 50 laps without smacking into each other. It's great fun, even though I don't really like auto racing mainly, it just seems appropriate to do on the 4th. Plus it's kind of a tradition.
Otherwise probably just cradle both my US Citizenship certificate and AR15 while thanking God I'm no longer under the tyrannical rule of Queen Elizabeth II...
I am going to build minis and watch fireworks on TV.
My girlfriend is working on the 4th, so we are moving our own celebration to the 5th. I am hoping my neighbors don't call the cops when we start lighting off fireworks, but typically on years that the 4th falls on a weekend my city turns a blind eye to firework displays that occur a day or two after the 4th.
Grilling and having a couple brews with the family in the afternoon, and then going to see my buddy's band open from some crazy Finnish black metal band.
This will be the first time in YEARS the military has let me have the 4th off.
I get a full 4 day weekend off. It's awesome. I'm giddy.
Got a bit of some of the cheap standard fireworks, bottle rockets, smoke bombs, etc... simple stuff for the kids to enjoy without me breaking the bank. Got some fancy sausages and nice steaks that we're gonna grill as well. Just going to have a nice day enjoying MURICA!!!
I'll be watching Kanye in London, purely by coincidence. Other than that, I'll be mostly not interested, same as every year, but that's to be expected I guess. It's merely an interesting footnote in British history.

Or just steal a tank and park it in your back yard.

Yeah no kidding....
Being in Washington gives me some ever so slight hope that I won't need to "hide" from the fireworks (Jihadin, Cpt_Jake and the guys who know, know why)... But beyond that, I'll be on the grill making Bison Burgers, with a few extended family members coming up.

No tanks at Campbell. 101st is Light Infantry. Apache's and Kiowa Warriors they have aplenty Being a "Air Assault" Division

Its our Independence Day...analagous to Bastille Day, if that is familiar to you.
Dutch not French, That would be like the Dutch celebrating independence from Spain instead we celebrate it on 5 may related to being freed from German occupation in WW2.
I though 4th July was burning American flag day in the Middle east .

Negative

I actually had to ask someone what the significance of today is. I'm afraid if I carried around the date of the end of every little colonial war we've had, there'd be no space for anything else.

Well played! Although as colonial wars go, it was a fairly significant one

Significant? In the annals of British military history, it was a minor skirmish

You mean 'we don't talk about it because we lost...'

We lost America; but we still kicked the arses of the French, Spanish and Dutch.
We have a tank painting contest going on at the local GW shop. Submissions are due this Sat/Sun, and with the launch of a new system at work taking up a crap ton of my time, I'll be spending the 4th doing a rush completion on my Salamanders Razorback. A lot of sub-projects for it I've moved to the post-contest list - pneumatic lifters on the rear hatch, open top hatch/gunner, dragon head replacing the turret blast shield for a proper Salamanders trophy - but the drivers compartment will be 75% complete, so as long as folks just look through the front windows without pulling the bolter hatch off for a top-down view, I should be good.

Ouch. Good luck with that.

There is something to be said drinking a piss water american beer on the 4th. Patriotic. I bought a 6 pack of bud, and a 12 of youngling (America’s oldest brewery if you believe the label). I’m not sure what to do with the other 5 buds I have no plans on drinking straight. I don’t think it would be too bad to use them to boil bratwurst in. Shouldn’t damage them that badly. I think all my friends have enough taste not to drink bud, but I’m not sure. I’ll toss them into the beer bucket anyway, see if I’m fishing them out at the end of the party.

There is a yard off of Market Garden full of M-1's and M-2's.
Yeah trust me here I've met the guy. This isn't the kind of crazy you want. Now i'm thinking a hammer, few nails and some nice wooden boards. We board him up and see how long he lasts. If he turns to cannibalism we let him out, crate him up and send him to parliament.
Reasonably sure there are laws against that here even there aren't in the US.
No if we wanted to torture him we'd simply force him to go outside and talk to strangers everyday, maybe force him to go to a party full of people he doesn't know.

The Walmart Door Greeter job is no longer a position

I got to here and was thinking you thought avatar was the 2nd coming of God or something (Jesus never got sex either). Maybe when I read hammer and a few nails I shouldn't think of crucifiction straight away
Oh and ribon make sure you use the time honoured female gamer distraction techniques that we read about on the boards every so often.
Go to my local gaming club for the first time dressed up as Ribon and play my grayknights for the first time since 5th, yeap thats my plans for the 4th, unless its derailing this thread in which case job done
Spent the only hours I had free today relaxing and listening to a few different renditions of the Star Spangled Banner, and now I'm at work, wishing I could be back home grilling and being all American-ish.
I had a bonfire on the fourth with my step bro at his friend's house, then went to my grandma's lake house the day after (family celebrated that day), and today I'm spending the afternoon sitting in a Dunkin Donuts cuz my car died. Joy...who fixes cars on a Sunday afternoon that is attached to a holiday weekend? Nobody. That's who. The nearest ride I could call was over an hr away. :(
People tried on my tactical gear (body arm still equip from deployment with plates) and shot over six hundred rounds of ammo with my civilian version of a M4
