So TimeToWaste had a great idea with his deadzone/warpath thread, but what about the rest of our Mantic goodies? I realize most of us don't have Mars Attacks yet but I wanted to show a couple of things off and then I figured we could use the thread for Kings of War, Dreadball, anything that didn't fit in with the other thread. It's always nice to see everyone's models, a source of inspiration for sure. I'll raise you these:
Eva:
and a Martian Grunt:
I know a lot of you guys have KoW armies and dreadball teams, lets see them

Post by: Azazelx
Most of my KoW armies are made up of other companies' products (mostly Citadel) and so I don't have a lot of Mantic stuff actually painted. These have been seen before, but WTF, right?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
WTF indeed, and they're lovely so deserve to be shown off

I like this idea, and it will give me the kick in the pants I need to finally document all the stuff I've painted since the KoW KS stuff arrived. In the meantime, here's a very bad shot of my first unit of Orcs:

A savage looking unit of Orc Boyz, Josh ...and is the leader wearing a top hat?
Nice work also, NT (or should I call you Rabbit?) The Ogre looks almost demonic with the deep red skin and glowing green eyes.
70422
Post by: NTRabbit
Rabbit is fine, and thanks! He's got red skin, and then I wanted to see if I could achieve some kind of rough, dirty colour and texture, so I painted his skin with Typhus Corrosion. I think it mostly captured what I was looking for.

Yup. They looked a little too naked, and I can't see savage lycanthropes taking the time to manscape before a battle.

Post by: Azazelx
Nice work, Josh. The Boar Boyz look great, as do the Werewolves. Still not a fan of the Trolls, but what can you do? The manscaping comments remind me of Steve Carell.

On the right is my second painted martian, 4 more will be joining those two in completion tomorrow (gotta dip and then wait for tomorrow to seal). I think I remembered the colors for once, I tweaked the skin a bit to make it a little greener.
he isn't 100% done, still needs to be dusted with the matte sealer, but the guy on the left is how I'll be painting my MA US soldiers. He's chilling with one of my corporation marines as they'll be doing duty together on various fronts, and this is why they're matched in scheme. May do a little white over the top once he's sealed, so the white pops just a bit more like the non-dipped marines.
55682
Post by: JoshInJapan
Nice. What are you dipping them in?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Minwax polyshades. Tudor specifically. Basically a rich muddy black-wash that includes a gloss clear-coat, but requires a matte coat to balance it out.

GrimDork wrote:Minwax polyshades. Tudor specifically. Basically a rich muddy black-wash that includes a gloss clear-coat, but requires a matte coat to balance it out.
Huh, my buddies use Minwax Tudor, and I tried it since it's so cheap, but I found it to be much clumpier than AP Dark Tone. AP Dark Tone + Anti Shine spray is still my favorite combination.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Yeah that AP shade stuff might be pretty nice, especially for fancier models. Haven't felt like dropping the cash on it when the other works pretty well. Automatically Appended Next Post:

Hey GrimDork,
Are those Martians done? If so, are you going to put helmets on them? It'd be interesting to see some painted Martians with the plastic domes on.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Yeah they're done (except I gotta figure out something for bases).
But I've got no domes. It was a kind of a thing that happened to a lot of the GenCon pickups. They rushed the boxes out so they could bring them to the States and a lot of the dome-baggies got missed in the rush. Anyone missing them will supposedly get them in their actual MA shipment (if they reported it of course).
As soon as I have them, I'll take the photos

Great paint jobs SlowPoke! I can't wait until those trucks come to the stores.
Though I painted them for deadzone, they are Mars Attacks minis. I got the troopers and martians from the starter set painted, still working on the civilians. I also painted up a Blaine stand-in.

67097

52447
Post by: tqw
Thanks folks! My deadzone board has a lot of homages to 80's action movies, and since I missed the kickstarter I couldn't get a "real" Blaine. That model is from Predastore.ch, and it is fantastically detailed! The scale is perfect (he's about a head taller than the regular humans) and I was very happy with the construction.

Meet Helga:
If she ever sees a game it'll likely be on the mean streets of a deadzone, but as she's technically a dreadball mini I figured I would put her here. Hasslefree gun, dark angel knife turned into a wrist blade, stick bomb and explosive from the Eisenkern accessory sprue.
It was fast paint work, the undercoat was kind of grainy so she was never going to look amazing without hitting the strip-vat, and I'm too lazy for that most days.

I like what you did with Helga, don't fancy meeting her in a dark alley!
Some Kings of War stuff I am going to show.
My test unit for my Orc faction
And the start of another troop of Ghouls
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Ghouls are nice and gory
Interesting color choice for the orcs, I kind of like it.
88452
Post by: RobertsMinis
There isn't a lot of skin on the Orcs, and I think Orc clothing and equipment should be muted and ragtag. I like it and will stick with it. Orcs are also going to be my "too much paint" army. So when I put out too much brown, a few Orcs get there clothing done, same with greys and greens. Too much brass, armour gets a lick, same with any other metallics I use. A few big beasties will add the colour to the army, I think...
Something I have just finished. Glue still wet on the basing.

70053
Post by: GrimDork
^Thanks And yes, they're meant to blend in so I can have a large human soliders/corporation marines/imperial guard style army should I get the chance to wargame it up in the future.
Your scheme looks good, kind of like military fatigues almost, which makes a kind of sense for convicts. Is that a wash or do you also dip your minis?
88452
Post by: RobertsMinis
That is pre-varnish. I tend to wash colours in washes that match or sometimes use things like purple to shade blue etc. The trousers are actually German Red Brown primer, followed by a black wash, they lighted up with AP Chaos Red and a bit of Mephiston red - it is how I paint my Enforcers but not as much Mephiston used.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Ah. I could tell you hadn't sealed it yet, which makes sense for a test model anyway. I just wasn't sure if it was washes or a dip.

Im guessing he painted it white and while the paint was still wet, he wiped it off, leaving it in the recesses?
Kind of looks like it anyway. Pretty cool effect though.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
The process was described in another thread, maybe the 'what are you doing today hobbywise' thread. I believe the white is some kind of putty/whatever that was applied and then wiped back off the bricks remaining only in the crevasses. I was considering using some plaster to try something similar. It's one of the Modelmates weathering dyes, called Brick Joint Filler. I pretty much whitewashed the walls with it, waited for it to dry then using a damp cloth wiped off the excess across the brick surfaces leaving the gaps filled in. It takes very little effort.

As usual with Mars Attacks minis, I had a lot of fun painting these though I didn't spend a lot of time per mini. I went pretty close to studio schemes for these, I dunno if it was lack of inspiration or if I just really liked what they had going on. Maybe a bit of both.

Alright, got a saucer done along with the little boy civilian:
The saucer was a very simple airbrush/drybrush affair... but I still like how it turned out. Pilot was kind of boring, need to save those for when I feel like painting martians I guess. The glued-on console makes it kind of a pain to paint it well so I more or less didn't try. I'd finish my other saucers forthwith if they didn't have pilots to do
The kid I painted for use in Pulp Alley as well, super quick paint job.
Oh and for fun:
54991
Post by: larva_uk
Oooh, shiny. That giant mech emerging from the trees looks great (and is the first time I've appreciated the scale of your jungle terrain).
I remembered yesterday I have a flying saucer kit stashed in a cupboard from a few years ago. It's not a mantic one. But it soon will be
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I went in a little heavy on Bones 2 as well as MA, and I should be getting a pair of their Grey alien dudes' flying saucers. Their stock pilots will be getting kicked out and replaced with spare martian pilots (of which I should have... five?) giving me a total fleet of 5 saucers
Heck.. that kind of makes me want to go find an appropriately sized retro robot looking toy and clean it up to paint in the same scheme as my big stompy

My first KoW army, first members of it
Mantica Ogres are from the Mammoth Steppe, separating the rest of Mantica from the frozen wastelands in the north. I pictured it as being a little like the Eurasian Steppe crossed with the Dothraki Sea, so it's normal grass but grows tall and as far as the eye can see barring odd islands of trees, which is why the Ogres are so big, and why they dominate the steppe - it's too tall for humans and elves to fight in on foot, but just short enough for Ogres to fight on foot, while still being tall enough for them to hide in for hunt and ambush. In my head the grass is about 6" tall, because Ogres in the fluff are "twice the size of men".
My Ogres are 4 different reds (VMC Carmine Red, VMC Sunset Red, Reaper HD Garnet Red, Minitaire Innards) all washed in SW Purple, and there's a possibility I'll pick a darker red again for when I get to Grokagamok and other heroes. The middle rear warrior is different than the others, because he was a test paint to pick a scheme that I did last year, and I didn't want to bother stripping him to match the leathers and clean off his muddy skin.
I made the grass very uneven, gave the shooters and boomers thick grass to shoot from on the flanks, gave the warriors thinner grass because cavalry has already been through it, and the giants stomped all theirs down already.
Giants are Reaper Bones Hill Giants, bases are movement trays from Back2base-ix
I've got some big plans for the future with 3rd party bitz and minis alongside the rest of my Mantic Ogres
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Looking good I like the red you've picked for the ogres, and the grass on the bases is pretty sweet!
Now that I've seen how they scale with ogres... I really need to get those hill giants sometime after they hit retail. Almost got them during the campaign but I was overloaded as it was.

Post by: Wolfheart72
Thanks guys,
The blue armor is a wash wich i put on them 3 times so the blue color would stick.
The Plague guys were also 'washed' and i really wanted them to look like bad news.
Bonestructures on the Big-guy were done with a white paint first and washed with a sepia wash.
Furthermore about the bone structure, i was winging the places on the body, looking at some pictures and from that just areas i thought looked good with bone.
The blue color for the Enforcers was chosen because i wanted them to be like an intergallactic Law Enforcement Agency, not specificly used by the Council but operating as an independant body within the sphere.
(i wanted to make them operate as the Brasilian special police B.O.P.E, but i chose blue as color instead of black)
Those guys are tough as nails and are trained under harsh conditions.
Furthermore, i will use my Enforcers as a Multi-taskforce.

This is actually the first time I've posted anything, it's something I've been meaning to do for a while, just never got around to it.
The resin stormrage veterans remain unpainted, really want to paint them well, will do them once Warpath ships I think.
They're not too exciting to look at unpainted, they're identical to the the restic ones, only with sharper detail.

That's a nice, unique skin tone for Abyssals. Have you considered doing the fire in blue rather than red to match? Either way, they look nifty.

I think the red fire is good for contrast/interest.

The red brick building looks fantastic.

Thanks , it's kind of a pain to finish it all the way around like that but it's worth it to me. Something different than drybrushing etc. It needs a lot of cleanup and 'reflective surface whatsits' on the windows and such.

I bought two mega armies in the KOW kickstarter, and painting them is the inital focus of my hobby blog here on Dakka. Some highlights: 2000 points of Ogres at a KOW event: 40 goblin spitters: Braves: Shamans:

@Polonius Mantic Ogres are my favourite Orgres and you've done them justice for sure
@Gromgor That's an awesome hoard. I love that KOW lets you be so free in the what's actually on the base.
@Big Mac
The veermyn are really cool. the green/grey is eye-catching.

@Nobody Thanks! I am having a lot of fun putting these scenes together like that. I'm working on a zombie legion using my corpse carts as fillers for them. I really enjoy the creative aspect of this kind of unit building.

@GrimDork The orclings are really cool, I like how much detail the base has!
I feel bad that I can't contribute as I'm not painting anything mantic related. Yet.
I could be painting the rest of my Forgefathers soonish.
I've also stripped my marauder stuff so they keep catching my eye. I really like the sculpts.
I'm also thinking about converting a Dancing goblin sniper to have a heavy pistol. Probably give him an enforcer pistol, I think I have one left. Might hot water pose him if I can too.
I've got some CSM to finish first but which would folks want to see more?

That's a lot of models. The green bases are an interesting choice. May I ask what inspired it?

honestly, i have a surplus of the reaper paint color Field grey (which is that green/grey color), and it just added character when i did a wash on models and some would get on it

Pretty majestic. I like it, nice work Hey now that you post in this thread and remind me it exists.. I guess I *do* have some misc Mantic models done... Dreadball xtreme guys repurposed for TNT. Convict, convict, brute force(?), dead man davitz(?), convict, convict. Much of the weapons are from WGF survivors sprues or cobbled together from scraps (like the armor on the previously unarmored convicts).
