MWH - Formerly Ultramarines, now the Rot of Nurgle has corrupted me... @ 2014/10/18 14:49:31

Post by: Marine_With_Heart

With my university year coming to a close, I feel that this might be the best time to start a blog that will help keep me motivated to build and paint the collection of models that appears to have been taking over my room the past year or two.
This blog will be about converting every single marine/miniature I have to create a unique Ultramarine army through both conversion and painting style as well as detailed bases (since I'm a bit of a sucker for the finer details )

The scenario for this blog is as follows:

"The Quantum Sector in the Segmentum Pacificus, located near the Eye of Terror, came under attack by a daemon incursion, lead by a World Eaters warlord Aratock the First Blooded. In the opening weeks of his Blood Crusade through the Sector, worlds were consumed before his power. His campaign seemed unstoppable for the populaces, and Solace looked to suffer the same fate of all the other worlds in its system, but they were not forsaken. Help arrived in the form of dozens of Space Marine chapters and Imperial Guardsmen, called to battle by the High Lords of Terra. Together they would blunt and turn back the World Eaters general and his forces.
The Sisters of Battle stationed on Solace were the first to fall, defending their shrines to the last as Aratock sought these buildings out. For what significance is unknown to the Imperial forces at this stage. The Imperial regiments that were planetside have been decimated, shadows of their former numbers as they hid and fought a retreating war. What remained of the people on Solace watched in awe as the sky rained drop ships and drop pods, disgorging forth troops to fight in the twisting and rubble strewn streets of Solace. For the first time, hope had returned to Solace."

And now with that rough bit of writing out of the way, here are some images so far of my efforts. The conversion work is going to be subtle on some, and possibly more extensive on others. Ill be going home in a day or two and so Ill be able to upload more photos of the models in a more complete stage. I hope you all enjoy taking this ride with me

Probably my two favourite built marines so far simply because of the poses of the models.

The dreadnought has had more subtle conversion work done.

And picture for size comparison.

Apologies on some of the blurry images, I had to make do with a potato to take them. If you click on the image, you should be able to get upclose and personal with the details on the models.
Hope you all enjoy the start of this interesting journey, any questions or comments you might have are welcome

Update time!

Arrived home from uni and decided to do a few bits and pieces. I have found that taking photos of my phone tends to de-saturate them a little. In relity, the dreadnought has sharper highlights and the gradient from blue to dark blue is more visible. But, that's what you get for trying to use a phone to take pictures, I suppose

Anyway, Here are some almost finished shots of the Venerable Dreadnought and the first Tactical squad built and ready for priming.

The squad was created using some bits from Anvil Industries, they do some great bits to help convert tac marines and their weaponry, the drum mags being a favourite of mine.

As always, questions and comments are most welcome

With recent work commitments, there has been little time to focus on the hobby, but I come forth now with a few pictures of some Ultramarines
These are just the base and then first highlight layers on the marines so far:

I hope you guys enjoy these.

Thanks
The highlights come in the next two stages of painting on the armour. So far they have only had a basecoat, a wash and then a drybrushing of a lighter blue to highlight the armour overall before I'll be going over another lighter blue. After that comes a bit of edge highlighting to pick out the sharper features, stay tuned for more.

Here, have some bases for my scouts! Im focusing on the rubble/urban theme for my basing which will be focused around greys and blues with some bits of rust thrown in for good measure.

More updates in the coming days as I am currently just going through and putting the second layer of blues on the tactical squad.
Hope you enjoy

After a bit of busy scheduling with work and things happening in day to day life, updates were unable to come sooner as less and less time was able to be diverted to the blog.
But. Not for long, for I have for you all today, an UPDATE!!
Here we have some lovely near finished paintschemes on the squad Sergeant and another marine as well as some near completed scouts.
The first Tac squad has all of the blues and golds down and painted with the exception of the highlights on the armour. Still to go are the all of the metallics and the battle damage as well as finishing off some bases with extras.

Without further ado, here we go, prepare yourselves... There is a small ocean of pictures to wade through

Here are the bases painted for the Tac squad, missing a few last drybrushes or coats of paint but overall shaping up nicely.

And finally we have some scouts. The scheme for the scouts is based on a dark armour fatigue Ultramarine scheme I saw in a WD magazine article that featured a team members Ultramarine army in the changiing to the newest edition of 40k. Seeing the way the scouts were painted made me want to do my own in a similar fashion. What the camera doesn't show is the subtle variations of greys in the fatigues to give a very dark urban grey feel yet still retaining the dark image over all. I wanted my scouts to be wraiths in the urban warfare, not bright blue and white like the standard scheme for Ultramarine scouts would have them seen as.

Of course there is still the matter of the skin tones needing the be fleshed out a little more but they are also shaping up nicely for the squad at the moment in time.

Any ways, sorry for the carpet bombing of pictures, I just thought that a picture might saya thousand words where I have been slaking lately in the updates.

As always, I hope you all enjoy the models and comments and questions are always welcome.

@Paradigm - Why thank you. DakkaDakka already has so many Ultramarine blogs, I shall need to up my game to stand out it would seem.

@Slipknotzim - Indeed they are, very excellent too and get the job done just right to give a more machine and mechanised feel to the legs, reminds me of Heresy era armour which I think looks amazing.

Small little update!

Due to some room rearrangements happening at the moment, I am unable to keep all of my things out to build and paint models, so for now I decided I would give you all a small taste of other things I had been working on a while ago but never got around to showing.

So for today, I bring you a picture of my first try at a World Eater marine in need of a wash in the joints and a Imperial Guardsman Sergeant complete with plasma pistol and powersword. As well as a little bonus pic for those that love small fluffy creatures

Here we have the start of an allied guard attachment, the 17th Red Devils that accompany the Ultramarines on Solace after drop podding onto the surface.

And finally, any rabbit lovers out there? These little bubbies were born not too long ago and they have appeared to taken away precious time from my hobby... No regrets though, just look at those little faces!

On some of the bases such as the guardsman, I used the 40k basing kit with the chaos helmet which works really well.

On others, I use a mix of plasticard, the 40k basing kit components and some dirt/sand from outside to create the varied gravel ground.

A great extra little touch are the skulls which can be bought in bunches on ebay and things for a couple of dollars in some places.

Really wonderful conversions. I like the marine with his bolter facing down the best. It looks like he's already put some Chaos scum down, but feels the need to pump a few more blasts of holy bolter rounds into it just to be sure.

Red Devils are looking good so far judging by the Sgt.

Is that demon on the World Eater's shoulder actually glowing?

Subbed! Cool work!

Thanks for joining us

You can never pump too many bolter rounds into a chaos scum, the target just becomes more and more bloodies unrecognizable pieces!

The eye of the daemon shoulder pad has a glowing blue object source thing going on just like the eyes and chest piece. The glow of the deamon itself is more to do with the pale skin tones I've used on it and the glare of the nearby light source. I have a few more World Eater chosen members laying around not being put to use that I could always use for an update if I cannot gain access to my Ultramarines for a while longer.

+++ WARNING, BLURRY IMAGES INBOUND! +++

So I hate to do this to you guys... but its almost 1 in the morning at the time of posting, and with a rush of passion, I completed the scout squad and the tactical squad.

The only thing missing from the Tac squad would be their shoulder pad decals which will need to be done at a later date. All of the models have been pinned to their respective bases and all have weathering and some battle damage.

I apologise for the blurry photos, my phones camera assured me they were more stable but soon I shall have to be using a proper camera to do my photography.

A few of the sharper images offer much better views if you click to get close ups.

As always I hope you all enjoy, and please be gentle, they look a lot better than the picture portray

Thanks AOV, the eyes are done with a simple white that touches the edge of the eye slot, and then glazed with Guilliman Blue Glaze to colour the eyes, giving them a bright blue appearance.

To apologise for the last batch of mostly scrappy photos I put up for a show of progress, I found some spare time today and dug out the Olympus I usually use to photograph.

Being a bit rusty, it took several rounds of trying different settings to find what felt like the right ones for the miniatures.

Because of the way the camera takes in a little more light, the models appear almost a touch washed out, but I assure you the Ultramarines have a darker paint scheme in person and the photos will hopefully get better as I learn to use this camera once more.
Now lets get down to business

Here are some retaken shots of the scouts as well for your viewing pleasure

And also on the blocks were some guardsmen. Trying to figure out how the overall scheme of the Red Devils would start to look on more guardsmen is a bit tricky, and the first attempts at battle damage look rather odd on the single model, but it's all a progress shot none the less. The armour plates are flat toned simply because they are missing their highlights and only base colours have been painted on them so far.

There are also a few pics I uploaded of some WIP on a few World Eaters chosen from the DV box set. If anyone is interested, I'll upload them here to the blog as well, but at the moment they are sitting in my gallery here in dakka dakka.

As always, the pictures can give you much more detail and closeups if you desire to click them andI hope you all enjoy.
Any c&c are also welcome.

"You there, random citizen of the Imperium! Yes you there, Sir(and or Madam)!
Let me ask you a question!
Have you ever wanted your local priest to be less boring and more exciting?
Of course you do!
Have you ever wanted to see your local priest weilding a shotgun one handed?
Of course you do!
And have you ever wanted to see him smite the enemies of the Imperium with chainsword in hand?!
I think we all know the answer to that!
Today ladies and gentlemen, we have a very special surprise for you!
Introducing to you all today on the Battlefields here of the once mighty Solace, The Old Kook!"

Jokes aside this is a priest I converted to be placed in a guardsmen squad. At the same time, I generally like the overall look of the model although I am thinking of adding a few more touches here and there. There is almost an inquisitors retinue kind of feel the Old Kook, and there is a bit of backstory/fiction of written for him... Ill probably put it up once the model (if ever ) is completed.

Hope you all enjoy.

WIP shots for you all today.

With some storms hanging around the coast here at the moment, i decided it would be a perfect time to finish building a couple of World Eaters models and base coat them while I still had the chance (and the time!)

With Christmas just around the corner, my paintbrushes were feeling like a little red christmas cheer was in order. I bring for you all some bases and WIp shots of the two chaos figures, Aratock the First Blooded and an unnamed character. Included as well is a first applications of base paints on the Red Devils Priest, The Old Kook.

Hope you all enjoy. I should have some more updates sooner, rather than later.

UPDATE TIME!

Following a few hectic Christmas working weeks, I have been able to churn through a little bit of painting to almost finish one of my World Eaters (Yay!)

Not having much time to spend on the hobby has sill enabled me to almost complete the WE Terminator Captain who is the process of being put together. Here are some lovely pictures for you all, starting with the Jump pack Chaos Lord.

A wonder of the Dakka Upload system is how it enjoys taking away a little bit of the details that are otherwise plainly visible in the unprocessed shots... Oh well The scar on the face was built up using liquid greenstuff, giving the impression of a wound causing a blind left eye using white when painting.

Here is the Terminator ready to be put together.

He is also magnetized at the arms to enable weapon swaps when needed, and for the posing to be allowed for style

And finally a supply drop from Mighty Ape was what inspired me to finally try and push through some of these models, I only hope that with the addition of these paints I add a little mroe something special.... Or indeed become inspired to build some more of my Ultramarines for the next squad.

As always, hope you all enjoy.

MWH.

Rabbits, well yes thanks for that picture! I have to Dwarf Lion Headed Rabbits, I'm not sure if I got their title correct. My little female is all black and she just sits on my arm whilst we stroll to the couch and lounge. She'll sit on my chest and explore a little bit until Kolby my German Shepherd gets too close then she'll bound back to me to get away from him. They can be distracting for sure!

@e.earnshaw - The shoulder pads, legs, torsos and ammo clips that seem different are from Anvil Industries, a UK based bitz company where I've stocked a lot of the small conversions on my models. A great little company I've found.

@Kelly502 - I have no idea what breed of rabbits they are, other than the father has part lop eared in his genetics. Some of the offspring have now got both ears down and are getting really super fluffy which is just adorable! Ours aren't too accustomed to being lifted or held, they much prefer being petted or stroked when on the ground., so climbing into their inclosure is always fun.

Alright people, after some real life issues occurring, my time and energy was unable to be focused on the hobby, but was instead needed for keeping myself just functioning on a day to day basis for the last two months or so. But no longer, I was only able to put off my hobby works for so long before I figured I had to give you all something.

So in regards to that, i bring you all a small update here on the World Easters characters, pretty much completely done except for some re shading of the models and perhaps a bit of edge highlighting on certain parts of the armour.

I apologise for the bad lighting, I'm doing this all at about 2 in the morning being unable to sleep and packing my room for a return to University in a few days.

Those look very nice indeed. I'd perhaps scratch the large red panels up a bit just to add some contrast, but other than that they're pretty great!

Also, I'd fill in the gap between the winged guy's hand and forearm, looks like it should be the under-armour rather than plate. That's just nitpicking, though.

I think that little gap might just be a wrist coil thing that I was meant to paint silver but simply forgot... Oh the joys of noticing problems only after taking pictures hahaha

Still things to touch up, but overall, I was wanting to go with a more clean looking World Eaters force to contrast the more gritty feel of the Ultramarines on the blog.

Breaking out a few of my paints and some tools, I did some more details on my Imperial Guard Priest character, the Old Kook before pining him to his base.

As well as that, I brought out some bits to clobber together the start of my assault squad, complete with two models and 5 urban rubble bases near ready for basecoating.
I made the first squad member based on the Reapers from Star craft after watching far too many games. The idea of the double pistol gunslinger marine cruising around seemed far too cool to pass up. and the respiratory face mask from the Tac Squad box makes for a convincing Reaper gas mask.

I also toyed with the idea of a trophy hunter, and at the moment I have slowly had this idea of building each member as a different character of the squad, members promoted from the lower assualt company to fill the ranks after the massacre of Damnos left the 2nd Company short on manpower.
Coming with these promotions, the squad mates have brought with them their strange habits and quirks, some that almost seem to go against the standard Codex Astartes. But with man power short, these Assault Squads are being given a pass over as long as they keep bringing the results on Solace required of them... And then some.

And here are your bases

Thanks Paradigm The Priest has been my first extensive conversion, and also first fantasy model I got. It's just a shame the finecast flaws in the model when I got it so long ago meant that conversion work was all he was destined for.

At the moment all of my models and bits are stored away for transporting tomorrow as I head off to university, but that hasn't stopped me writing some little story/fluff for the assault squad... It's pretty basic but it was something that has just come to mind if any are interested.
I'm kind of wanting to make them sit on the outskirts of bordering heresy simply because of their habits and quirks, but are overall still loyal to the emperor... Even if the chaplain may disagree with them sometimes.

With Uni well underway I have had little time for my models and things :/ a shame since I keep having great ideas but never getting around to implementing them. Regardless, I bring you all some more completed jump infantry.

All models have been converted including a more compact assault variant of the melta gun.

Once again time slips through my grasp, and the daily tasks and struggles of the grind at university leave me with little time for models. Although when assessments final come around suddenly my interest is peaked and I have all the time in the world. So this is the result of these enthralled hours better spent on actual university work Time well spent though.

As always my shoddy camera work does wonders to these models, thanks guys.

And finally the aftermath of these cutting and converting processes leaves me with things that are still recognisable as models to come.

Hope you all enjoy. Ill be doing my best to finish off the tactical squad and getting a basecoat on both squads to start some painting. An activity that I am sorely missing at the moment.

With temperatures sitting at around the negative celsius to about 3 each day here in the inland parts of Aus, I found my hands have been fairly unsteady. Not only with brushes but with my camera as well, as shown by this little update

Also a little peak at what the models start to look like when they are mounted on their bases.

Hope you all enjoy. May not post for a little while until things get warmer and I can move my fingers again Long live the snowy lands in Australia!

Thank you I've always thought a base is as important as the model itself, so it's good to know there are people out there who are enjoying these

Another long period of no noise and another update for you all. This one is small and consists of blurry out of focus photos to enjoy. Ill try and get some proper shots later on but many assessments are taking their toll... that and it's 2am in the morning here

First up, the assault squad. The Sergeants red helmet has only had a base coat applied and looks a little dodgy because of that. Still much progress to go on those such as the scroll work, highlights, straps...

Then we have a shot of the jump infantry mounted on their bases as well as an overall shot of the Tac squad. More pics coming later on when I can keep a steady shot with some daylight.

FInally we have a blurry shot of all the work done so far, as well as how much still left to go.

I hope you all enjoy, and I hope I don't take another few weeks to get some simple pictures out to you all. Wish me luck.

As a man of my word, here are some more pictures of progress. Ones that this time are hopefully more enjoyable for you all.

This is how the models will start to look on their bases. I do a lot of these base shots despite the fact none of them are pinned yet but I will wait until the models are complete before they are stuck to their bases.

I have no idea when I'll get more progress shots up here for you all but I will try my best. Currently I'm on holidays from university for a couple of weeks, but we all know how procrastination can take hold and not let go...

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy Any comments or questions are always welcome.

Alrighty, this blog has taken a long hiatus. It seems university life took over as well as personal things that arose that have kept me out of the gaming and blogging scene for almost 2 years now. I didn't touch 7th edition all that much since we had no gaming groups around my area, but with the recent arrival of a gaming and comic store in town, my interest in 40k arose once more.
Coupled with this and the arrival of 8th edition (which I thought was amazing value for the models and the great big book of everything) I purchased a box of new models and have been pouring over them for the last few weeks. However, I had left all of my modelling supplies back home until a recent visit. Now with everything in hand, my passion for the hobby has been reignited and maybe not in what this blog so far has entailed.

For now, my interests seem to have switched allegiances from the Ultramarines to the Death Guard!~ I've always loved the colour schemes and rough gross rusting appearances that often DG models follow. With my last adventures into painting finding my own techniques starting to create rougher battle hardened marines, I've decided to take a stab at painting DG and some wonderfully rusted industrial style bases for a little while.

But, this first update is just a taste of getting back in to the hobby. Upon getting everything back to my own place from the folks, I set about creating bases. I didn't think I would stay attentive to the models but 8 hours later I had churned out 20 bases for the Pox Walkers (constructed, but no painting yet). With the cold environment around here Ill have to wait a day or so for some proper sunshine to let me spray. But for now, Im using a dodgy phone camera to get these pics done.

When my set up is more secure, better pics will follow.
Hope you all enjoy.

With my space for modelling restricted to my room due to my housemates cats often enjoying the game of 'push this new thing off the table or destroy it', Ive had to come up with a mini battle station from which to build and paint which can be packed away at a moments notice.

Everything has so much glare due to not being familiar with my phones camera, hopefully this will change over time of usage, bare with me

Minor update time~

I finished all 20 Pox Walker bases and now got them glue tacked down for spraying tomorrow. Some minor conversions might still be done to the models as having two of the same of each model seems a bit boring to my tastes.

This is only big thing done so far, switching out the hammer for a chain glaive from Anvil Industries. Some shaving and cutting of the hand as well as drilling out some of the robe enabled this conversion to work, although looks a bit clean at the moment.

Now just some models on their bases.

So another minor update. After looking over all of the Pox-walkers I decided on something. They all looked far too alike, having 2 of the same each in a 20 man squad made for dreary repetitiveness. Because fo this, I decided to stay up and concert at least 10 to 12 of all of the Pox-walkers to make each unique in the squad and to stand out. Ill go through and show each change and talk about how I did it.

The knifey bros have had one of their weapons switched to a hook. This was done by cutting off the blade at the handle. Afterwards, I found a hook from the chaos bits and pieces collection of chains and skulls, there was a hook attached to a small mounting mechanism which I cut off and then filed to attach to the end. The other Poxwalker just has an incense burner attached to his back hip simply for style points and because they often are associated with Nurgle anyways.

As for what I did with the removed blade, I decided to create a makeshift double bladed gun handle. The ingenuity of the Pox-walkers to make anything a weapon is amazing I used some GW barbed wire to attach it to give it a mangled put together look and also applied liquid greenstuff to the other model to create scaring down the centre of the bloated stomach. This is more for aesthetic reasons but will be more prominent when painting commences. I might do this to more models as it's a simple fix to the clone like appearance of a number of them.

With one of the caped Pox-walkers already converted to have a chain glaive instead of his hammer, I set about remaking one of the weapons for these guys. I cut off the hammer head from the spare part and attached it to one of these guys instead. Still fits well too. I also cut and filed down the spikes on the arms and backs of these boys because they were already accidentally getting bent and storing them would be a nightmare once painted so I decided to cut my losses and keep them to a minimum. The guy on the left has some spare tyranid armour sprues bits that I got randomly from a friend and wanted to try and armour him but also make it look natural like growing his own chitinous armour through his gifts from Nurgle.

Now it's time for the Hammer Bros~
These two are relatively simple, just filed down one end or the other and attached various chaos bits including a small hook the flat mounting point of which was then glued to the other hammer to give it a bit more fierce a look which I just found looked cooler anyways

These bladed Pox-walkers were the hardest to try and do something with simply because their pose and weaponry didnt allow for much that would end up mutilating their figures beyond what I could manage. Short of cutting off hands and trying to greenstuff something, I endedup using a chaos possessed bit (one of the horns) and through the power of filing and liquid greenstuff mounted it the shoulder to create the illusion of a 4th arm starting to sprout out.

I have a major soft spot for the gun wielding stalker Pox-walkers. They just look so cool to me. First I started by cutting off the little spikes on their right shoulders pads for storage and aesthetic reasons since it looks more menacing being one sided spike heavy to me. After that, I started to cut and file away at one of the walkers heads and using a spare guardsmans helmet, I slowly managed to fit it in to place. He looks dorky and well protected. The helmet also has been scratched and drilled to look worn and slowly decaying like the rest of the armour on the unit.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I really appreciate it

So with the bases fully assembled and the models ready, i got bust and primed all 20 at once. I then proceeded to obsess over how much I loved painting and set about getting all 20 bases finished in record time (and fueled by copious amounts of coffee until 4 in the morning). The end work is pretty spectacular but the photo quality of dakka doesn't quite do them justice. Still, here they are in all their glory, Industrial, rusted rotting bases. Possible last things to be done to them would be the odd blood splatter but they would be determined by which models are mounted on them or if it would be needed at all.

Hope you guys all enjoy~

That sounds pretty interesting, what thickness of plasticard do you use for that? And how hard does it get to cut strips that small to look like stitching?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
With all of my Poxwalkers base coated, I set about painting them to my style before realising that I didnt have all the necessary paints. After order some new stuff, I instead chose to base the largest model in the Dark Imperium set, the Blight Drone.

I wanted the base to be slightly elevated and a bit over the top in details with the platform that it is based on being completely rusted through but also still intact, if barely.

First I chose to split the platform in to two with a gap down a little bit of one end, giving the impression of a drain. If I had the chance to go back, i would have placed a thick piece of plasticard underneath the pipes to elevate them a touch more so they stood a little bit above the gutter. The pipework was a bit tedious but luckily the I beams match up perfectly in height to create the support structure to the base. It will have the main open topped gutter and then the 'sewage' line running across and underneath the panels.

Here are some shots taken of the Blight Drone sitting on the base in mid progress before I decide to try and up the anti and make it a bit more ostentatious, which seems to be a catch phrase for making more work for myself.

After a few more hours of drawing up designs I realised what was missing. I went with a line of bracing with rivets across the main gutter line and debated doing the same on the other or leaving it bare. At the very least I was thinking of adding a chaos spiky bit line of spikes from their tank lines but am not convinced. I decided instead I wanted to focus the other side on making it more rusted through and almost breaking down so I focus on chipping and damaging the edges along the gutter. As well as this, I needed something to break up the monotony of the drain gaps leading under the metal sheeting so i quickly created some bars to place grating over the main entrances. You, to stop the gibbly bits from clogging things up.

The two top panels are not glued down at the moment and wont be until I've finished painting it. This is so I can easily get at all the details underneath since there will be a fair bit of rust and verdigris on the pipe-works, as well as allowing easier access to the gutters underneath and between the grating pipes.

I still want to add more, I can think of extras to add such as some chunks of different things down the drain since it will mostly be made to look like either a dried river bed style or thick with some sort of oozing sludge to give the impression that the sewerage is actually deeper than it appears. That would also include adding some extra bits to the top platforms since I feel they are a bit plain even with the weather and bullet and rust holes applied. I'll have to decide on these later since even as I type this up ive added a a few holes to the visible pipes.

I hope you all enjoy and Ill hopefully have some painted models in my next pictures when the supply drop arrives later this week.

Alrighty, another small update time.

With the paints still MIA I turned my attention to building some of the plague marines isntead, their bases still to come.
These models are festooned with details and seema bit bulkier than the regular marines I generally build. With these details, there was a bit of difficulty in deciding how to convert them to be unique.

Ive managed to get 4 of these first 5 to be different from their Dark Imperium counterparts. Some of these conversions have been minor and some a little more major. With so little inspiration going around at the moment it's a little hard coming up with bits and pieces to change about them that aren't simply adding a little incense burning or some grenades or ammo pouches to the models, despite my adequate bitz box.

But for now, here they are.

First on the blocks are these two. The man on the left, plasma-chain-man has had both a head swap and his left pauldron cut down to a smaller bladed horn (honestly I the only thing I dislike about these plague amrines is how many delicate and super long spiky bits they tended to put on them. I love the details but just starts to move more in to the Lord of Change's territory). Gives him a more compact feel whilst the helmet is from the SM Veneral Dreadnought kit, plus some studs I added on top.

His partner Belly-McBellfast (seriously, he is COVERED in bells! We get it, you love the enemy knowing where you are at every moment in a fight!) For this warrior I actually cut a lot of his bells off from the wrist and the gun as well as cut off the burner on his pack. This was replaced by a skull that will later have some rotting flesh added to it via greenstuff. Im still tempted to cut off the bells hanging from his knife to replace with other bits.

I was a bit stuck with what to do with Mr Pipes here. After looking through some bits, I chose to cut off the gun magazine to be replaced with a drum mag from Anvil Industries (I love these things, just wish I had more to do everyone with them). Afterwards I needed a bit more and took the burner that cut off Belly Mc-Bellfast and after shaving down the large pipe placed it on top.

Spike is probably the most converted of all. He is one of the two marines that have the same pose, legs, left fore arm and backpacks. His original head was supposed to have curling thorn horns that created the symbol of Nurgle, these horns were cut off and the head shaven to look more like its original helmet. I debated whether or not to give him his brother marines proper helmet (Plasma-chain-man) but realised I liked the older pattern of armour more, and the helmets look really cool. His backpack was replaced by a part from the chaos possessed kit. On top of that, both of the horns on his shoulders were shaven and cut down to a more reasonable (and safer to store and travel) sizes that make him look a bit more even sided.

These are the 4 that have been converted. I have a few ideas but they generally involve changing their magazines out or cutting extra bits off of them because of how over the top their decorations can appear (I'm looking at you Belly!). Any thoughts or critiques are much appreciated, I am always looking for inspiration to create wonderful different marines.

Hope you all enjoy.

MWH.

I noticed a trend amongst a lot of other builders that the plague caster is considered a bit of an ugly or clunky model. I am one of these people, and so after a bit of inspiration and stalking through some of the blogs on here, I came up with a quick and simple solution to make the Plaguecaster more appealing, or at least to myself anyhow.

First things first was to cut the right arm to separate the arm from the leg of the model, this allows for move-ability of the joint and for the next step to be even easier. After the arm is cut off, I cut and shaved the arm at the end of the vambrace to be able to hold another weapon (goodbye noxious cloud!). The caster has been given a plasma pistol from the the khorne berserker kit with a small tentacle added over the wrist to hide the ugly cut and give it a bit more of a nurgly feel instead of an ordinary arm. The idea of doing this came from Krautscientist and his conversion for the Plague caster was extremely well done.

The left arm holding the staff is left intact, instead cutting bits and pieces off the top of the staff (Which just looks really fantasy but child-like) so that needed to change. The Scythe component is one of the scything blade arms cut off a possessed unit backpack bit. These were combined with some liquid greenstuff but will require a bit more attention to make look natural. I also took a small Nurgle charm and added it to the bottom instead of the usual piece. There are some extra things I could do, such as adding an incence burner or some bells (cut off from the bell marine) to give it a bit more flavour.

The last part was an idea that I could have sworn I had seen somewhere on the internet but my searches had been fruitless. The garb used to cover the Plaguecaster's mouth is actually the front tabbard of the Horned/bolter plague marine from this set of models. I cut the tabbard off when building because it just felt too out of place (not sure why, cloth just doesn't seem like something Nurgle would want everywhere), plus I needed some extra changes to make the model look unique.
The tabard actually has the perfect crook and design to it that it fit almost perfectly into the little gap between hood and face. After a little cutting and shaping I realised I had cut too much but the tabbard works well to cover the ugly cherub face and gives a sense of motion and magic being cast. A little greenstuff helped to fix up the mistakes.

Following on from that, my paints finally arrived and I set about painting up a Poxwalker to get my bearings with the paintscheme.

Im going with heavily rusted weapons and dark green clothing (might change some as I go along). He still has some way to go until I am completely happy with the model but it's nice getting back in to model painting

Comments and critiques always welcome, I hope you all enjoy.

Thank you, I actually love most of the model, it's mainly the toy staff and the cherub face... Although the old action of spewing a cloud of noxious death onto his victims seemed pretty cool. Another little dislike though is all of the streaming bits of cloth on his body, makes him look a little fatter than he needs to be in my opinion.

The only green stuff I've used so far has been the liquid stuff from GW. When using it though I use toothpicks to move it about and then later shave or trim bits and pieces down with a hobby knife when it dries.

For regular greenstuff then yes I would have to wet my tools when using it.

As promised here is some updates on the models. Painting the Pox Walkers is a delight if also a time consuming adventure. I've never painted models like this before, having only ever built and painted marines in clean power armour or battle damaged.

I've gone through and started painting models almost in pairs. Im displaying them to contrast one another as I have randomly selected some models to have more tan skin tones and then some to be extremely pale. If I could go back, I would have made all of the Pox Walkers have extremely paleskin as I just preferred the look of it and makes sense since the models are supposed to be walking corpses of pestilence.
I have also painted up some dark skin Pox Walkers but I'm undecided how to continue on their skin tones since I've never done it before. The 20 will be a mix bag of colours to resemble a shambling horde, sometimes devoid of cohesion.

Ill be reposting new shots later on when I get time to finish painting them all to their proper standard, as currently only 2 or 3 are actually finished out of the 9 here.

The final Pox Walker is a skin tone that I really enjoy painting and found it came out extremely well considering greeny pale skin seemed like a bit of a challenge at the start. Some schemes are based on GW's PW (such as the final pale skin tone) whilst some are jsut my own amalgamations of colour.

Hope you all enjoy this little update~

So I became distracted and went and bought some new bits and pieces... Long story short I have 3 new marines and 5 new poxwalker models and some extra bits and pieces including the new 340 skull set from GW.

After some random conversions, i've slowly been working towards turning the 3 easy push together marines into unique models.

This guy has taken a head swap from the chaos terminator lord kit wehich had the symbol on the mouth shaved off. Along with a magazine change to a drum mag, I'm not really sure what else can be done for such a compact model but I knew after seeing the bloated face that that had to go.

The blight launcher marine was also a bit tough to do. I hated the tentacles (seriously why does nurgle have so many noodley appendages??) and so it was cut off. Being unsure what to put in the right hand isntead I decided upon a spare a ammo box that was trimmed a bit. Only a bit of a shame I didnt have any round drum mag ammo boxes which would fit the model better.

Third marine has left me at a cross road. One pose has him wielding the traditional fist sword combo (cut off from some of the Dark Imperium models) to give him a little more menacing pose over the standard stock position.

Then there is another alternative arm choice on my mind.

A spare arm from the Possessed kit gives him a forboding and tempting pose and honestly suits the model pretty well as well. Combined with the different head taken from one of his brothers, he model can work just as well. This model I am needing some feedback with to see which pose/arm combination looks the best (rule of cool must always apply when converting)

Finally I bought one more model (that I'm willing to show ) in my last supply drop.

The Plague Lord is a wonderful model that I've always wanted to own, and now with my love for Nurgle, I am thinking of ways to convert him into a slightly larger marine since his size now matches the scale creep that GW has implemented lately in their new sets.

As always, comments and questions are always welcome

Ask and you shall recieve!

The model is just stuck with glue tack at the moment so the arms can be swapped at a whim. if neither option looks good, what would be some other arm/weapon swaps thtat could look good as well?

The marine is run as a plasma gunner because of the weapon strapped to the models backpack (standard with the push fit model) so different weaponry isnt really a concern.

I love this fall from Ultramar! The conversions, bitz bashing and elite level base creation are epic!

My suggestion on the last figure is that the possessed hand becomes the new 'power fist' as it looks like it burst out of one. Then swap the rear arm to a bladed weapon/firearm to balance it out. The angle and model definitely lend itself to the possessed arm more, but double power fists is a little clunky looking IMO...

At the moment that back powerfist is kind of already glued down... I had cut it off from a dark imperium champion and glued his green one on him instead, like a little swap around. I could probably tear the arm off if I really wanted to, Ill have to have a fiddle around with my bitz box to see if there could be any suitable candidates to change the back powerfist arm

Well, I have to say the sword one looks more marine-y, but the claw one really captures the DG's gurgle side. So tell me, are your dudes Space Marines with a touch of nurgle, or Nurgle's Minions that were formerly Marines?

I was actually thinking about this when I read your comment last night. After mulling over it for a while, I did come to realise that the model was more marine than monster and that perhaps the arm would be better suited on a different candidate. After looking at some of the other models, I did find a new home for the arm on a more Nurgley corrupted monster marine and it actually seems to work really well. Images will be coming later of the conversion.
Suffice to say that I'll be running him with the sword combo instead.

I keep flitting between different models, doing bits of some, completing others but never quite fully finishing everything or being one hundred percent satisfied just yet.
So to help fuel this insane asylum of creation, I ordered a large batch of bitz from Anvil Industries so hopefully the supply drop arrives in the coming days to fuel the ideas I have running in the my head.

When through converting a couple of models that felt a bit bland to me.

I resolved the issue of which marine gets the possessed 'powerfist' count as put it on a different DI marine that seemed more corrupted and monster like than a marine.

Then there was the marine with the demon dagger weapon thingy. Wasnt the biggest fan of it, looked almost out of place amongst everyone so I decided to replace the blade with the spare I had cut from one of the 'twin' marines abckpacks earlier. The large weapon fit pretty well but the handle has had some sort of a curve added which can be straightened if people think that it looks a bit off putting. As well as this, the power fist was replaced with a little more menacing an arm.

I felt like the Blight Bringer has too much going on the model. It's good, I love it, but it just feels far too busy. That and the pose is ugly and attrociious, doesnt really make sense. So I cut a lot, trimmed a lot and reposed some stuff.

Now he has the feel of striding forward and putting a plasma round through some still moving target. This is much better than the previous pose of having both his arms leaning forward which gave the model a clumsy stance. Im still undecided on the front cape apron part. I want to cut it back dramatically since it jsut feels out fo place being part of the Death Guard. Why so much cloth???

All comments and critiques are welcome.

After a brief run in with constant asssignments that kept my focus on work rather than models, I have an update!

I ordered some bits and pieces from across the web to try and fuel the ideas I had running around for the Dark Imperium models. After browsing through a few ranges of stock, I also picked up some new tools and basing equipment.

The first supply drop comes landing in from Anvil Industries. I've used a bunch of their stuff before but Im really loving some of the new gear that they've been making lately which really lends itself to conversions.

Never let it be said that Anvil doesnt care about their products, the box was so tightly packed with the foam that i wasnt even sure my items were in there

Next there were some bits and pieces to help with basing that I ordered from Mighty Ape including some secret weapon panels and fencing. Included in this bundle was a couple paints to help flesh out my collection after leaving a bunch of important ones at home.

And fear not, there has been some times to build and create some stuff in amongst the university schedule. i went through and built all the industrial bases for the plague marines and painted them.

Enjoy~

I just took the time to go through your entire thread again, and everything here is super inspirational. I'm planing on buying the easy-to build plague marines myself, and those conversion are (somehow) even better than the last time I saw them.

Thats quite the compliment there mate
There are a few others out there with some blogs that go fairly above and beyond the conversions I do for my Death Guard but it's nice for the work I've done to be appreciated, thank you.

Having said that, i decided to build a death guard marine that is fairly beyond the normal of what I've been doing with the push fits so far. Taking that Lord of Plagues model I bought a little while ago, I decide that he would be the perfect base for a Blight Launcher conversion. With some bits from Anvil Industry and a few of my own, I present to you Valgrot and his little friend, Tim.

Clicking the images takes you to bigger versions in the galleries

I struggled for quite a while deciding what to do with the left arm. After fiddling around, I came to the conclusion I wanted him to have some personality. I came up with the idea of a little friendly servo skull that has become enslaved to a marine who may not quite be all there still. I came up with little bits of fluff in my head that i'd probably write out when I get around to painting the model.

Still some work to go on him, some added little bits and deciding what do about the gaping stomach whole. First thought was to simply fill it mostly in with greenstuff since the rest of the model is pretty busy and doesn't need more distracting features like something sticking out of the gut... Oh well, Ill decide on that later.

I also get this thought of cutting the spines or trimming them down on the shoulder pad, thoughts?

Any thoughts and queries are always appreciated, thank you.

Alrighty finally got some time to put paint to models for the first time in forever.

I bought a little proper desk lamp to help with painting and photos, just need to get a daylight bulb but for now it suffices for shots like these.

I also went through and tweaked the armour scheme I had tried on this model, instead going for edge highlighting and then washing the model instead of highlighting after the wash. Gives a little more subdued grungy feel, I might alternate if I can't decide which I prefer if if there is no real difference at all.

Obviously he is a WIP but I want to know what you all think. I liked the idea of their weapons and armour being rusted and worn, I might go through alter and do chip scratches on the armour but don't wish to over do it with the weapons already being bright and rusted to contrast.

Wonderful stuff, I am impressed with your edge highlighting, will be checking in to see how it all turns out.

Cheers for that. A lot of the cleanness of the edge highlighting comes from touching up the model with the original panel colour to make it neater (either before or after the washes depending on which method I take). A good thing about these death guard models is that there is a lot of sharp or blocky edges, far fewer rounded ones that on other models because of the armour mark that they wear.

A little bit more painting done on some of the DI models. So many details, it takes a couple hours to knock a single model out so i started trying to do them batches of 2 at a time.

And the next 2 part way through having the base colours and highlights put on.

Hope you enjoy~

Gorgeous work! I'm not a big fan of the 40k DG scheme, but yours are phenomenal! Great photos BTW, it really shows off the scheme.

Thanks for the kind words

I'm trying to create a scheme that's recognisable to the current DG but also unique. Plus I just love painting rust effects and battle damaged models after doing perfect armour panels for so long, so I may down the line decide to do chipping effects on the models green plates.

I decided to take some time off with university having finished for the year. Went back to see the folks and spent about a month just working and enjoying. Got around to painting a couple more of the death guard models and fix a conversion on one of the blight launcher models.

Hand stretched out demon guy came out pretty well, enjoyed trying to make the mesh of flesh and armour more organic, although dakka image processing never quite does the paint jobs justice

This is guy is almost complete, jsut need to wash the wood on the gun and finish doing the rust properly in the armour and weaponry.

Here is a group shot of all 4 standing close together.

Finally there's the little tweak to the conversion I did on the push fit blight launcher model:

The model has had the spare drum replaced with a spare that comes with the Anvil Industry's launcher that I have equipped on another model. I cut off the barrel to the BL and replaced it with another spare component from the same Anvil Industries kit. Now it looks proper and more fitting, the paint job and a little scratching down the line will make the changes look more proper and less clean then currently appear.

Enjoy~

Finished up 4 of the Death Guard models and fitted them to their bases. The shades of armour differ ever so slightly as I applied a bit darker of a shade on the first two shown here.

As well as this, I went through and put together the push fit poxwalkers from the booster pack for a bit of fun. On top of that I tried my hand at greenstuff for the first time in my life and found it to actually be pretty enjoyable, hope you like the results.

I went through and removed a lot of the horns on their heads as this fetish that GW seems to have with spikes and tentacles is getting a bit overdone. They look a little more bare and bald as a result of it but I'm happy with the way they are. Some of the PW could not have limbs manipulated and I didn't feel like changing their weapons (although i might do it later) and so i decided on making strips for bandages and hinting at where the illness first started to appear on some of the unfortunate souls.
I particularly enjoyed creating the tubing for the re-breather mask PW, showing that the hole in this tank and the cut cord lead to the plague eventually consuming him.

Alrighty that's a pretty good update, let's see who gets to be post number 100 on here... Unless I beat you all with my next update

Post 100 on the blog time!

Welp, I took a little break around Christmas due to visiting family and what not, since coming back the work schedule in my life become incredibly hectic and I found little time to do my hobby.

However, in the last month or so I've taken time to get back into the swing of things, including entering into the unofficial DakkaDakka painting competition.

So, here we are then. A completed Noxious Blightbringer, converted with alternate head swap, arms re positioned and backpack cut away and remade.

Coming in the works at the moment are bunches of converted and kitbashed Poxwalkers using zombies, flagellants and plenty of bits with greenstuff. I've made about a dozen or so of them at the moment and have been base-coated. Unless some more painting comp things get in the way these bad boys will be the next in line for their paint jobs!

Stay tuned for more!

I went about building then basecoating some of the converted Poxwalkers to enter in the dakkadakka unofficial painting competition. With entries having closed on my end here, I decided to also upload the pics to my blog here. Works been getting pretty hectic altely so there hasnt been to much time for models and I even had to push myself hard to finish these 5 by this months end.

Sorry about the pictures being so big, but all the better to see each and every little wrong detail, right?

I tried to make them gribbly and grizzly, using parts from the zombies, flagellants and other parts sitting around in my bitz boxes including part of a DKoK. Suitably happy with the pustules that I molded on using greenstuff and beads, as well as their horns and growths. I kept the bases simple since these models had been so heavily converted I didn't have the time to make new bases for them to stand on.

Having said all that, they seem to look a lot more like cultists than Poxwalkers, but I just think they're mid transforming, only recently infected and slowly turning to the corruption of Nurgles rot. I love painting blotchy skin to only emphasis the infection and the sickness coursing through their bodies.

Hope you enjoy, Ill probably take some photos tomorrow of the other converted guys that I havin't painted. No idea when Ill get around to updating this blog, as the next painting comp ill be trying to paint a troll with 3 colours maximum. The change of pace with waht I paint or build is a nice motivator when not working or focusing on other real life things.

Hope you all enjoy.
