HO HO OH NO!!

It's time again for the craziest 40k tournament of the year (and probably life), featuring fully custom nonsense missions from the deepest depths of Travis' fevered brain, drawing from a deep well of GW jank seated firmly into his consciousness from too many years' worth of inhaling primer and plastic glue fumes!

Look out for unique (and Mandatory!) warlord traits, objectives and battlefield effects full of HHHoliday Cheer, and maybe even cookies!

This tournament requres festive armies of 1850 points and will run for three merry rounds of calamity, at the end of which a winner will be declared, along with prizes for the best Sportsman, Best Army, and more!

The scenarios will be kept secret to ensure maximum "fun" on the day of the event, and suitable holiday conversions will earn you re-rolls; for example, if your Imperial Knight has a green-stuff santa hat and piles of presents at his feet, that battle cannon will become just a skosh more accurate.

This event will be reported as an ITC event, because for one, why not, and for two, if you win through this gauntlet of nonsense you deserve some points!

So deck your halls, light your candles, spread your honey, and get down here for the best slice of holiday fun the grimdark has ever seen!

Considering my attendance record last year was a whopping 2 of 12 I hope so too. When I played often I still only managed 6 of 12 a year but also sprinkled in 1 or 2 larger events. Last year I managed 2 plus the LVO

What is an ITC event, and English please.

The ITC is "the Independent Tournament Circuit". It is a tally of scores taken from many west coast tournaments. I know Travis is a busy man, but that would be awesome to make this an ITC event.

The LVO is the last event for the 2014 season, so that means that the points for the tournament this Saturday WILL count towards your 2014 standings. I will be sending the results that night.

When Chris's TWC beat me a few months ago, it had Rune Priests using Biomancy to buff the TWC DeathStar, 4+FNP and such. I barely looked at it this time around, but it didn't seem different.

I pulled 3 BA DP lists at LVO, (if beer soaked memory serves correctly) and it was the addition of the all melta-pistol wielding unit that seemed to recur that gave my Serpents a lot of problems. And, if not horn-swoggled, the BAs have the option of having 2 meltas in regular units too, not just sarge's combi?

Either way, John, nice to see that you're like everyone else, running to the internet for inspiration.

I'm pretty sure this one will be 1850 but using the missions from Broadside along with the "Royal Flush" aspect. Travis just needs to post it on the Facebook page

So are we using the ITC FAQ or the GW FAQ because they contradict each other with regards to IC's and infiltrate...

GW FAQ supersedes ITC, I would think. I know Frontline was enforcing the new GW FAQ at LVO at least.

Generally speaking the store has taken the stance the GW FAQs take precedence over all others. I can't think of any time Travis came down on the opposite side of a GW FAQ or took an independent FAQ answer over an official GW one.

Even the ITC FAQ defers to GW first. So its the order of operation is:
1. Main Rule Book
2. GW FAQs and Erratas
3. ITC FAQ
4. Judge's Discretion

Although the ITC FAQ is only in effect when we are practicing specifically for a certain event.

The plan is every month will be an ITC event. Next month is 2000points using the Broadside Bash rules. That includes using the playing cards

Interesting rules query: Per the BRB FAQ non infiltrating characters cannot join infiltrators during deployment and vice versa, but what if say a character wants to join them in a way that doesn't use the infiltrate rule? Like what if a non-infiltrate character wants to join a unit that has infiltrate, but I wish to choose to hold the entire unit in reserve aboard a deep striking transport? They are not deploying, not infiltrating and not outflanking, could the character join them and then they all come in with the transport together?

Who specifically?

So if Khan and Gaz join up with a farsight bomb who wants to be inside a Thunderhawk being transported inside a StormLord, can they come through the portal glyph and still assault turn one?

When asking the question to another, they seem to put up a persuasive argument that all joining of units by IC's is done during deployment, and thus a unit cannot be joined even if they are not deploying via the infiltrate rule, as it is not as much a rule you can turn on and off, more a permanent attribute.

Even when embarking on a transport and arriving via deep strike, the IC would still have to elect to join them during deployment thus rendering them joining impossible.

Oh well...

And to MikeFox's question, the answer is OF COURSE

FAQ as written, no they cannot join a unit without also possessing the infiltrate rule. They could only join the unit in game. Not sure how Travis wants to rule it.

I thought Travis ruled that GE games the rule is Infiltrate if you want to, not the BAO/LVO ruling that you have to. I still have a hard time swallowing a rule that forces you to infiltrate when you have the rule. It does not address units that have both infiltrate and scout, Frontline's ruling makes you do both, which puts you in a game standstill, where I just want to throw my dice as far as they will go.

So, my suggestion is infiltrating and Scout is voluntary, never required.

@Casey, be a "best sportsman" and give me my at-a-boy.
@Travis, be the TO and blow the whistle on this nonsense.

I'm not saying a unit that has infiltrate must infiltrate. I think that's asinine. What I am saying is, during deployment a character without Infiltrate can't join a unit with it, even if said unit won't be infiltrating, and vice versa. At least the way the BRB FAQ from GW is worded. Personally I think it's an oversight.

The following is from the GW FAQ

"An independent character without the infiltrate special rule cannot join a unit of infiltrators during deployment, and vice versa."

So blame GW. The "must infiltrate" is something different

I unfortunately have to agree with you John, and it makes me sad only because it limits certain ideas in the game. For me, I wanted to do fun stuff with nids and actually use some tyranid primes which are NEVER used, but oh well.

I see everyone's point. The 'must infiltrate' is not different, people are making the point that a crazy rule should be followed, to heck with common sense. I am glad we have a TO with both heaps of common sense and the nads to use it.

Paul, I have in the past dealt with Infiltrating units in that way, however these days I'm less inclined to deviate heavily from the ITC... It's not perfect, but it fills the vacuum of official rulings reasonably well and by and large I agree with it. At the expense of waxing philosophical I'm probably going to align with ITC more than less as we move forward in the interest of enacting whatever measures of continuity within the community that can be achieved; until, as Johnny Rico would agree, we find something better.

Something is better than nothing, and I'm not enthusiastic about a 'wild west' time where any given event can deviate wildly in terms of rulings. We're moving forward into a very good time for the game and a lot of good players are coming back in, so I want to present as unified and clear a format and community as possible.

All that being said, The ITC is just a tool, and we all know the adages. Independent Tournament FAQs don't kill players, TOs kill players.

And, John, Casey, Allan, with every intent to chastise and bully (deal with it), you know that playing at your *F*LGS fosters the larger community , increases the profile of the game at large, and helps generate interest that translates into stronger tournament attendance, more people available for weekly gaming, and generally makes the world a better place. Playing in someone's garage is divisive, not constructive, and creates cliques. And we all know somebody has to eat the waffle.
In the end, does Casey really need more opportunities to drink?



Nevertheless, the April event looks to be another good one. I'm toying with the idea of a 'big game' on the fifth Saturday in May, format uncertain but would people be interested in that just from a schedule-availability point of view?

Something is better than nothing, and I'm not enthusiastic about a 'wild west' time where any given event can deviate wildly in terms of rulings. We're moving forward into a very good time for the game and a lot of good players are coming back in, so I want to present as unified and clear a format and community as possible.

All that being said, The ITC is just a tool, and we all know the adages. Independent Tournament FAQs don't kill players, TOs kill players.

And, John, Casey, Allan, with every intent to chastise and bully (deal with it), you know that playing at your *F*LGS fosters the larger community , increases the profile of the game at large, and helps generate interest that translates into stronger tournament attendance, more people available for weekly gaming, and generally makes the world a better place. Playing in someone's garage is divisive, not constructive, and creates cliques. And we all know somebody has to eat the waffle.
In the end, does Casey really need more opportunities to drink?



Nevertheless, the April event looks to be another good one. I'm toying with the idea of a 'big game' on the fifth Saturday in May, format uncertain but would people be interested in that just from a schedule-availability point of view?

Adam and Allan have a long and complex personal history. We simply can't know what all of their intimate, shared language means.

But, really, what two opponents do over the privacy of their gaming table is really no business of ours.

I just want to be clear on a rule. Units that have a special rule for deployment can use that rule, they are not forced to use the rule. If a unit has infiltrate, in can use it, that is how it is written in the rule book. The book never says that it must use a special rule.

Now, it also says in the rule book that you can change this rule and force people to deploy any way both players agree too.

So which is it? if I have infiltrate, do I have to infiltrate?

The Infiltrate rule requires the unit be deployed last, after all other units are deployed. The 'can' allowance comes in the unique deployment options, ie units with Infiltrate can be set up up to 12" from the enemy if they're out of LOS, or they can be deployed as close as 18". They get Outflank if you hold them in reserve.

The only thing that is compulsory is the 'deployed last, after all other units' bit. Other than that, you can put them wherever you want within the specific restrictions, which can include just putting them in your deployment zone.

All of the above models are even more impressive in person. Some really talented people and awesome armies were there. The place was packed with 36(?) players or more and I had 3 great games against some cool opponents. Tony with the Daemonkin and I had a splatterfest in Turn 1, John taught me a few painful lessons about Tau shootiness in Turn 2, and Trevor showed me what a Culexus does to Summoning armies in Turn 3. I think all my opponents were from SD and hope they come up again.

I am really happy Tony won best sportsman. My game with him was a ton of fun as usual, he's a great guy to play whether he is winning or losing. I wish I could have stayed for a bit after the event but it ran long and my parental duties beckoned...

I'm totally with you John. I thought it was my feeble brain making the missions seem difficult to grasp! You don't need to play every aspect of every 40k mission in every single game of a tournament. You can achieve the same "test every aspect of the list" approach by creating a variety of missions over the course of the day(s). I understand there has to be at least primary and secondary missions to create a good spread on a 3 game tourney but they need not be multi-tiered and differently scored.

If you want to make sure MSU isn't over powered (hello?) then add a KP mission, if you want to make sure that elite armies are spread thin then add a 5 objective mission or scouring, if you want to test army mobility then add a maelstrom mission... etc.

One last comment: Modifying the maelstrom table sucks, straight up. Leave it as it is and allow players to discard the cards that can't be scored... I play with my 8 year old son and it was common sense for him to do that the first time we fired up a maelstrom mission. Let me add my codex maelstrom missions too please. That is all.

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who came out for the April tournament; it was a blast for me and I hope you all had an equivalently great time!

To get the ball rolling for discussions on the May event, We're back to 1850. As I said on the event page, 2k was fun but I feel it's just too much. That sentiment was echoed by people I've spoken to in the store since the event, one comment in particular is that 2k felt like "kitchen sink territory", which I don't disagree with.

Given the saline levels in regards to mission design, we'll be keeping it real simple for this one. Book missions, one Maelstrom and one Eternal War for sure, with the potential for a throwback mission based on one of the old RTT scenarios from days of yore. More than likely if I decide to run such a vintage mission it will be a classic Victory Points setup, tweaked to fit in with the modern era.

And I totally forgot to mention the Ranged D issue! So, how bout it gents? With Craftworlds getting what appears to be easy access to Ranged D, are we talking about no "non-codex" Ranged D already, kind of like how we said codex LoW only at the dawn of 7th?

Yes, I am also rather salty on that subject after using the BSB missions!

I didn't chime in on the points level in previous discussion but I agree with you and the others that 2k is too big. Not only is it kitchen sink but the games, and turns, seemed to just drag on forever.

Point of technicality, but I believe it was the entirety of Codex: Grey Knights that preceded Croissant Rodeo as the meta powerbuild of choice. You have to go back a loooong way for Tyranids to pop up in cheese flavor.

They are in the Escalation book; War of Attrition and Impending Doom.

So of you have a LoW and the opponent doesnt they get +1 to seize. And for every 3 hull points/wounds done they get +1 VP to the secondary mission.

Thank you sir, I saw the part about HP but missed the wounds counting. I'm mainly looking at Draigo and Dante so only 1 bonus VP for taking them out?

Id check but I believe that if its an ITC event then 'character' LoW's do not give up the bonus points or the +1 to steal the first turn.

If one player has a Super Heavy/Gargantuan LoW and the other does not, the player without can roll on the Escalation Warlord Table and also earns an extra Maelstrom point for every 3 Hull Points/Wounds dealt to the Super Heavy/Gargantuan Creature LoW.

That seems more reasonable. Not sure why Infantry models are LoW anyway...

I'm comfortable with the restriction that players may not field non-codex models with ranged D weapons, so if your book that starts with the word CODEX has it (lol Eldar) then you're good, otherwise no.

Yes that paints with a reasonably broad brush and sure, the Shadowsword isn't really a problem but for the sake of ease and clarity (particularly since we'll all still be picking up pieces of the sky and deciding which Malifaux crew to play in the wake of the Eldar release anyway), I'm happiest with just taking non-codex stuff out of the equation. In all honestly it's less about the gun and more about the chassis that totes it.

For those of you keeping score, this is the same style of solution I adopted during the heady days at the dawn of 7th, when codexes started getting LoW to everyone's general confusion.

I don't think any other grails were taken beyond sacred seals by impetuous hot German chicks lately, so there's no other fissures in the earth beneath our feet currently, so until next catastrophe....

2. WraithGuard - I don't think having D-weps makes them much better than they were before. Still, if I give them Invis, *if* I get Invis ....

I don't have enough models for the Wraith Host formation, but I can bring one of the other ones, either the Dire Avenger Shrine or Aspect Host, neither game shattering.

Except for abandoning Serpent Spam, the army should play as before. Spiders and Hawks are pretty much the same. WarWalkers same. It looks like Inviso-Wraith Star is a likely build (remember I don't have an innovative brain, so if I don't see it on the 'Net, I will prolly put together something lame). Again, this is so we can explore some of the newer stuff and have fun. I'm not looking to wreck-face.

The codex as a whole had a lot of welcome changes, people just got WAY to focused on the stupider choices than the really cool stuff: Like all the changes to the aspects...usable banshees?!

@Brothererekose I will contest that Hawks are NOT the same by a long shot. They not only have the fastest natural move in the game (before flat outs and such) but they have a haywire vector strike that hits flyers! THAT in of itself completely changes how that unit can be played, by by fire raptor when little hawk men fly over you!

THe only real dumb change was board wide strength D. They already had S10 ap2 weapons with instant death on 6s. Why did they also need strength D? Ranged strength D is a boil on the 40k game that needs to be lanced. I mean common, dscythes are just wrong now, and the only platform I am aware of that can straight kill any super heavy in one volley. auto hit, ignores cover d weapons that can score multiple hits... Ugg

As for the wraithknight, I would have no problem with that guy except they just gave him free feel no pain... T8 with 6 wounds, gargantuan rule 3+5++ or better is hard enough for many armies that aren't marines (with grav) to deal with, but also giving him feel no pain? All in a package under 300 points? I mean damn, he makes the reactions to the release of the riptide look stupid.

The D-wep swing in power only changes WraithG & WKs' effect on Mutli-wound models and vehicles, and even then, mostly when you roll a for Pen/Wound. Given that the majority of models getting shot are 1 wound infantry, you won't see a difference.

I don't own the artillery nor D-Scythe fliers, just 10 WraithGuard and the WKnight, but I'm guessing I'll build the list around that. Maybe a couple options that the group can choose before announcements and pairings.

I'd still like suggestions though.

I just played Teddy and we both agree that the codex has some huge auto-includes. The Seer Council is top on my list. You can spam warp charge and get a ton of invis, which we all know is tough to beat. The smart player will never see a perils with eldar so watch for that one.

The codex should be fine if you bring an answer to invisibility and lots of anti-psykers. If your army has no answer, then I think you'll have to do the swarm and smother tactic. I don't think Travis should do any changes, maybe the change to invisibility, but I think that is already in place.

On a serious note, we have been having internal discussions about a Grand Tournament style two-day event here at the store and a tentative date of August 8-9 has been presented.

Loose details would be: two-day tournament, 3 games Saturday, 2 games Sunday, big dinner for attendees Saturday night (maybe get a banquet hall or just descend on a local joint), full prize complement, etc.

What say you? Is that timeframe open for you guys? We're still in the very early planning stages so there's time to adjust if lots of people are out on that weekend and/or there's something else already going on...

I will be there and so will Teddy. Great dates too! You did rent a hall for 'ard boyz as I remember, maybe Chuck's spouse's place? Please say it will be 1850! Also, you should come up with a theme, something cool that makes it different. LVO, BAO, and BB are all low on the creative side IMHO, I think we could discuss.

Casey, this is why I put the warp tendrils out first! There's plenty of room to adjust, I want to see what works best for the biggest group of people before I set a date.

As for theme, last time we talked about this I did a whole big write up that I never sent over about a story arc for the missions. But yeah there will totally be some awesome mission design.

And I'll have a terminator helmet ready for top prize if this actually happens.

This year it will Mike. I've already begun amassing the prize / swag pool and started on prelim work on the trophies and logo, etc.

A 2day tourney sounds awesome! I think the only dates I will not be available is the first weekend of august, 1-2 I believe.

Aug. 8-9 works for me! Only dates I have to keep open in August are the weekend of the 15th.

All right gang, we're in the home stretch for this weekend, we're looking at another big event with around 30 players!

Now, of course, I've jinxed everything and it'll be Me, Mike, and Adam playing some salty round robin!

Things to remember:

- Earliness is next to Godliness; I'd like for dice to be rolling by 10:30 so please be prompt. I'll be at the store around 9 for setup, donuts and coffee are always welcomed!
- We're doing three rounds of 2 hours, fifteen minutes each, so please be ready to play with lists made, materials handy, and models ready. Lunch between rounds 1 and 2. Don't all go to Panda at once!
- We are playing at least one Maelstrom mission from the BRB, if you have tactical cards bring them, if not we'll have sets for sale and I have a tracking spreadsheet you can use.
- Don't forget your Warwalkers, Allan.

Another awesome day at GE thanks to Travis. Eli brought a fantastic army that won best painted. The big bad beast won Mike best non-imperial. Danny won the sportsman, Alan took best general. Someone help me out with best Imperial, there were lots of guys I didn't know so their names have run off.

Travis did a great job with the handling of it, but all the players were fair and fun to play. The terrain is really great and super fine to play on. It looked like all the big bad Eldar are not really as bad as the net would have you believe. I played a Culexus, took out a Bloodthirster and another MC without taking a single wound. He is always invisible, so I wonder if he'll be nerfed in the future.

Big thanks to Eli, Ryan, and Shayan. They were great opponents and made the day. Hope you guys can come out again, I want to toss some challenges out there.

SOOOO, what is in store for us in June! It is going to be a post apocalyptic game you know!

I am so incredibly bummed that I couldn't attend, play broken eldar, with my WK, and win the whole thing. Proving how broken the book is.

Oh, yeah. A soulgrinder/daemon farm list won?

Couldn't possibly have been because the general wielding it was a good player? Take that meta-predicting doom sayers!

Winner was a Khorne Daemonkin w/CSM allies and alot of Soul Grinders.

Scores have been sent in and topic updated. I'll update the post once we determine the format.

Teddy played Eldar and went 1-1-1. He still doesn't have the units he needs. He did have a Knight and only Miles with GK was able to drop him. Time was playing Eldar and all the toys, but it didn't get him the win, not sure why.

Still hoping Travis posts something on the June RTT. I am bringing something old that will be new for me.

This tournament was a BLAST! Was so great to see so many new faces, some really great guys joining the game empire family.

Somehow I got stuck against deamons w/ chaos space marine allies twice, but thankfully after my butt-whooping first round, I was able to get sweet vengeance on the deamonkin last round. Take that in the face Khorne! Bee tee dubs, Kharne the betrayer is no joke.

I also take full credit for giving best general the win, since I opted to give him full battlepoints the first round via my butt-whooping. It was a last great hurrah for my nids before the new dex releases...prepare yourselves for the Invaders from Mars next month!

Thanks for a great time gents, well worth the drive up from San Diego to represent the Scions of Chaos! Thanks as well for the love shown to my Night Lords, it's pretty awesome to have my labors and curses throughout the conversions and painting of hundreds of lightning bolts appreciated!

Great group of guys, I look forward to making the trip up again in the future!

The funny part is the caption. The knight didn't get to fire its flamer once that game and was killed out right that combat. I think I lost 2 MANZ. Granted the explosion killed some more but who's counting Yarrik refused to die, that SOB. I think I killed him three times before he stayed down.

Its a bit late but some of the people from the GE crew will be at a small 1500pt. tournament at Next Gen Gaming tomorrow.

Dice off around 11am and if 8 people show up the first place winner will get a knight titan. Its a good place with great scenery and some relaxed games.

Absolutely he made very few mistakes in our game, whereas I made a couple of huge ones he capitalized on. He's a fun opponent too.

Salamanders didn't get nerfed... They have all the best things they had before, TL melta with purchase of Vulkan, TL flamers as a chapter tactic, and now instead of rerolling failed saves to flamer weapons I get a 4+ FNP which means against Blaeflamers and other AP3 flamer attacks I get a save now whereas I didn't before! No nerf here move along...

I think I was thinking that the master crafted was a down grade to twin linked, but Teddy gave me the, "Dad, what melta has two shots??" So I get the "move along" at home too. Bummer.

Great tournament, tons of fun. Great to see some of the further out players paying a visit.

Isn't it great when your kids correct you? Edwin is only 4 and he already has gotten me more than once! I don't know where he got it from but that kids is way too bright for his own good, or ours...

Scores have been sent in. No ITC event next month due to BAO. There will be something for those not going though.

For those not going to BAO there will be a tournament on the 11th at game empire like normal. It won't be ITC but you can still play a few games and hopefully win stuff

a. Trevor had daemons, and there were prolly 5 or 6 other daemon/chaos players, doing well enough. Cultists, Hell Turkeys, Blood Thirsters, Fatey, heralds and Khorne Dogs. 2 guys brought Brass Scorpions!

b. At least 3 parking lots, Battle Companies. And per the TO's instructions and Fatherly Advice, I think those games were finishing in better time or at least reaching Turn 4. Those armies did well enough. No 0-3, all losses that I know of.

c. El-Tau. Except for Andrew's full Tau, there were several Tau allies attached to the Emprah's Employees. Jay brought Harlies, I brought full elves. Besides mine, I think I saw only one, possibly two more WKs.

c.2 Darrel brought the Stanley Kubrick sicko elves (Dark Eldar). He needs to post some pix of those jet-engine bikes.

d. Dark Angels. Brandon G., Teddy and maybe more. Brandon had AstraM in his mix. I played against Teddy's list last week. DA continue to be something good.

e. With MikeFox not there, orks were missed, and I don't recall seeing Adeptus M. nor 'Nids neither. And though Karlos told me what his army was, I still don't know what's in it, chaos-tau?


Now this:

Keep in mind InterNet Pundits, lists are one thing, and I brought a brutal list ** but my poor Command Skills gave me my two (close) losses. Both opponents in post-game discussion pointed out a couple decisions I made that cost me victory and they were right.

Lists are important, but 40k is a better game, when
1. You play somebody who knows how their army works
2. there's less griping about "broken codex this" or "uber that."
3. both players play their armies to full potential

So, learn to play better!

It's still fun to moan and piss about GW's prices and poor rules writing. That said, though I don't complain about broken cheese (I play it!) I need to be a better tactician.

It also occurred to me that there were no Blood Angels (Danny K. was a no show) or Dead Robots at the tourney.

Some corrections.

1st was Trevor (KDK)
2nd was Pablo (UM Batle Company)
3rd was Carlos (Renegades w/Tau)

Teddy brought Taudar. Walter had full company of Dark Angels

Darrel also had an illegal list since he used the Kytan. Remember to check with the tournament packet or the TO when you want to use a unit with experimental rules.

There were, I believe, 4 battle companies and 8 KDK armies. There was 1 pure necron army and 1 ork army with a gorkanaught AND a stompa
