Welcome to the inaugural Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge. For those who haven't seen the other threads on it, this is a no-prize-related challenge open to any and all painter and hobbyists. Anyone can enter, from a newcomer to the hobby with your first box of minis to a multiple-time Golden Demon champion, and the winner each month will be decided by community poll, not just on the paintwork but on the effort, creativity and awesomeness of the finished piece!
For the first month, the theme is: Space Marines
Your entry should be Space Marine themed and related, but does not need to be a Space Marine itself. To give you an idea of the scope this can cover, all the examples below would be perfectly elligible for entry:
- Any Space Marine, Chaos Space Marine, Grey Knight or Horus Heresy model in Power or Terminator armour
- A Dark Eldar Wych decaptitating a Space Marine, or an Ork Meganob in looted Terminator Armour
- A Warpath/Deadzone Corporation Marine
- a WW2 US Marine that has unexpectedly found himself in SPAAAACE!
How To Enter - You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it. This could be unassembled, primed or even basecoated, so long as we can see where you are starting from. Entries that do not submit a Proof Picture will not be elligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 4 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. If you do not finish in time, the single most recent WIP picture may be submitted.
So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins Thursday 26th February, and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st March. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 7 days.
Voting Guidelines When voting, consider the following as well as the quality of the paintwork:
- The creativity and originality of the entry
- The overall composition of the piece, such as basing, conversion and coherency between the models
- The relevance of the entry to the theme
- The effort the painter has put into the entry
nettraper wrote: do we have to start from scratch ? or can it be a marine we "just" put together ?
So long as you post a picture of what it looks like when you enter, then anything short of starting painting is fine. I will post this 'starting' picture when it comes to voting, so people can see where it's come from, but yeah, already assmbled/primed is good to go. The only reason that rule is there is so you can't just dig out something painted years ago, as that somewhat defeats the purpose.
Ok so I've got a few things that are space marines I could do... I'm not gonna do Enforcers now because that scheme isn't complicated enough to win a challenge (not that I really plan to win anyway ).
So I could do one, or possibly upwards of five terminator-legged Honor Guard. Elaborate dudes with lots of extra kit, bells, whistles, you name it. Kind of over the top just shy of being silly.
I've also got dreadnoughts. If I'm going to make a solid effort I'd have to keep to doing just one of those. I think I'd go with an AOBR dread customized into a veteran/deathwatch/whatever-old/elite/snowflake-dread-you-wanna-call-it that would do well for this kind of thing.
Thoughts?
Huh, the only way I ever figured out to paint yellow was to airbrush it over white
I'm in too. I have a squad of devastators that have been in the to do like for ages. The legs and torsos are started, with a base coat and a couple of colours blocked in, but weapons, arms etc aren't even cleaned up yet, so lots of work to be done on them.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'll post a starting pic tomorrow.
OneManNoodles wrote: The glorious Imperial fists, he'll be the captain of the 5th company.
Here's hoping I can still remember how to paint yellow!
Ah, a man of good taste! I just did up a model of Hagen (5th Captain, then Chapter Master) myself. It depends on the tone you want with yellow, but for mine (nearer ochre in the darkest bits) I did Averland Sunset blended up to Vallejo Ivory before washing the whole thing with Agrax, looks pretty good for how relatively simple it is.
@Grim: a Dread would be very cool, I am possibly going that way myself. I'm actually struggling to find something, believe it or not, as I don't really want to repaint something, definitely don't want to move onto a new army, and I'm not sure my Fists are up to scratch. I'm toying with a Lysander conversion, but again I'm not sure I can make it work that well. I could do a mini-diorama with some Corp Marines and the Mantic Zombies I have coming, I guess. We shall see.
I think I'm gonna have to get new magnets or just glue the dread's arms down. Since I don't really play 40k anyway... doesn't need to be modular so much anymore. I've gotta replace the multimelta, I'm thinking assault cannon. I may also go a little silly and give him weapons dreads can't take, or at least not in quantity.
I've been wanting to use up all of my marines by super-condensing them all into a smaller force that's more elite, more badass, and that doesn't necessarily follow standard unit conventions for 40k since I'm not really trying to play.

That's cool, the 5th has the best colour scheme, yellow with the black trim.
I should still have my old Iyanden darksun and golden yellow in a useable condition. Is agrax the new sepia wash? I suspect I may try something different combining my new style of painting black -> white + colour with the way I painted my Fists which was darksun +> golden yellow +> skull white with brown and sepia washes mixed in.
It's going to be interesting getting the right balance of the gold with the yellow.
Agrax is the new brown wash (Delvan Mud replacement). I think there's an actual Sepia one but personally I prefer the depth you get from one coat of Agrax, and it works better on reds which I also paint a lot.
Seraphim Sepia - great over white to make parchment, or over bone for skulls.
Also, I am on a bit of a roll at the moment, so I will be in.
Deciding on Ultramarine Dreadnaught (I undercoated it last night, after saving it from someone's bits box and stripping it), or some deathstorm Blood angels, or space hulk stuff.
Oh good, I'm glad somebody mentioned Space hulk...I guess I could paint one of the blood angels in there...
I really don't want to start on my space wolves...I haven't even picked out a color scheme for them yet...other than I think I might do a icy theme...like extreme frost.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually, now that I think about that, i take that back. My toxicrene comes with a lovely space marine pinned under its foot...he qualifies. Now I just have to figure out if I should still paint him as blood angels or not...
I'll post a picture when I get it completely built. right now I still have a hollow toxicrene body.
I want to join the fun! Just got back into 40k and am really excited to get this project going so this is good motivation.
http://imgur.com/a/LMqse starting point. just posted this last night.
Idunno... that model may or may not have already had goggles, not as familiar with it as the old/current cadians. It looks about right, I'm eager to see paint on him!
I also like that last space marine, too-big sword is just right
mad_eddy_13 wrote: I have a prepaint WIP of my armsman, lot of fun but almost 3 hours of work on ONE guy - so much for a whole landing
And yes he is using a Naval Shotcannon, because I am nuts and love scatterguns
Im new to modeling but wanted to ask why you put the green stuff over his visor/goggles?
I'm basing him off some old GW art and the original goggles didn't match the art so I made some changes - first I cut out the original goggles and then built up the new ones with GS.
Starting picture below. They are basically just primed purple. I'd picked out the chestplates, and the gaffers helmet, but there's still a lot of grey plastic, and a crapton of work to do on them.

@angelofvengeance I just read about the soul drinkers and I cant get them out of my head how cool their fluff is. If someone wanted to trade my 2k SM army for a 2K unpainted but assembled SM army I would pick these guys 100%
Looks like fun. I've only just started back, so no idea how quick I'm going to be. If I wanted to enter, do I have to do that now, or later if I think there's a chance of finishing in time?
@Toastedandy: Sounds good! I look forward to seeing it.
@TP^DC: So long as you provide the relevant starting pic, you can enter at any time between now and the end of the comp, there's no rush. I'll leave you off the list for now if you're not sure, but if you say I'll add you. It's not like there's a penalty for not finishing or anything!
Decided on my own entry, a Wolf Lord converted from the AoBR Captain. That guy is such a nice base for conversions!
Hmm, was going to just load this poor dreadnought down with weapons like they were going out of style... but nothing is really fitting the way I'd like it. Gonna find something to adequately replace the stormbolter (that was already damaged/missing) but I may stop. Maybe I'll just load him down with all of the space marine baggage I can find, that seems like something useful a dreadnought could do.
GrimDork wrote: Maybe I'll just load him down with all of the space marine baggage I can find, that seems like something useful a dreadnought could do.
Hah!
"Venerable Brother Agaion, Bringer of The Emperor's Fury, Victor of Heraceles VI, Champion of Ultramar?"
"Aye, what do you require of me, Captain?"
"Hold this."
I've found a Cyclone Missile Launcher does a good job of adding some bulk/firepower to a basic Dread, mount it on the top and it fits quite nicely.
I was gonna snag one of the Deathwind launchers from one of my pods but I didn't see any the last time I looked. I was considering ganking a set of cyclone missiles from a land speeder but it's my favorite landspeeder configuration...
If I don't give him too many outlandish guns he'll still be fairly legal to play, not that I care too much...
Kind of wanted to give him a big-ass sword for his DCCW too.
Mostly made from GK bits. I need to finish my spiritseer and an ancient dwarf hammerer first, but he’ll be the next project I cover over in my blog. If I can keep even vaguely close to my 1/week mini goal, he should be done in time.
Alright this is roughly what I'm working with, I'll be doing some modification yet but you can use this as the proof, certainly.
I think I'm gonna use the second position for the missile pod, looks way better IMO, i'll just cut the support part back till it fits. He's got a single barreled meltagun nested in his power fist, I like to think fluffwise it would be retractable. I've got a small spotlight that goes opposite the missile pod, just can't find it right now. The lascannons are gonna get glued in place so they'll be straighter, and I'm gonna cut out the two MM fuel tanks and replace them with what I think is an IG heavy weapon team lascannon power supply. I'm also gonna work in as many of the larger boxes, bike saddlebags, weapon crate+bedroll style bits I can so he can support his brethren in the field. Any suggestions?
Okay, so this is the dude that comes pinned under my toxicrene's foot. Is he going to be solid enough for the contest, you think? Or should I go paint up my spacehulk stuff?
Here's my proof pic. Not that you can see anything due to a comination of mobile phone camera and indoor lighting, but it proves the model exists, which is the point. A Wolf Lord from AoBR, with sculpted fur pelt, a Power Axe from the TWC set and a Storm Shield from the SW Termies.
OP updated with (I think) everyone and all Proof Pics copied over. I won't be copying every pic to the OP, but collecting the Proof and Final pics there saves a heck of a lot of time when it comes to setting up a voting thread!
If I've missed you or your pic, let me know and I'll add it.
Awesome, welcome to the forums! I look forward to seeing your work!
GrimDork wrote:Gonna be a lot of cool spesh mahreens by the time this is over!
Indeed, I think there's going to be a lot of very different stuff here, covering so much more than just the archetypal Space Marine! A chance to show that even possibly the most ubiquitious model type in wargaming can inspire so much creativity! Already we have Space Marines of all ranks, live ones, dead ones, not-quite-dead ones, non-superhuman ones, bikes, jetbikes! And it's only day 2! Anyone fancy throwing in some TDA, I don't think we've had any (non-dead) Termies entered yet?
@SlaveToDarkness: Yep, sounds fine! I'll add you to the OP.
@Cam: If you find yourself with the urge to knock out a Marine over the next month then you can enter right up to the last day, so feel free to drop in if you do find the time!
Ignatius wrote: Of course. Of course I stumble onto this as I finish the first two models of my first Grey Knights Terminator Squad.
If you want to enter them as part of the whole squad, then that's fine! Just post a proof pic of the 2 painted ones and the other 3 and you're good to go. The more we get entering the better, so if it gets more awesome SM in here we can bend the rules a little! Let me know if you want to enter.
More like Demon's Souls, the Dragon Bone Smasher is a beast
I just wanted to avoid the dog snack shape but keep the concept, man, how much do I love the game, I even named two characters from my Iron Warriors after Demon's Souls characters.
I'm in. I've had a couple plans floating around my head for some Legion of the Damned space Marines and I might as well jump them to the front of my paint list!
Here go - the proof pic. DV's Deathwing squad. Try n get them all painted up b4 the deadline. Been lookig for an excuse to get busy and try out a new paint scheme. The ill-fated Brother Mendrion is almost done and looking tidy
Here is my proof picture of my unique space marine scouts. They have had sculpted hoods pulled up and I will be undercoating all the painted areas with chrome silver and leaving the outer surfaces of the cameoline cloaks clear. I think it will have an interesting effect.
Wasn't feeling the DW love today so I've decided to go with Cassor the Damned as my paint challenge this month. Not really happy with how the drybrush highlight of Terminatus Stone came out. I might go back over it all with Abaddon Black and re highlight it with Dark Reaper and Fenris Grey.
What do we think?
Those guys look awesome! There's no pressure whatsoever to make the deadline, so I'll add those as Proof Pics to the OP and if you get either or both finished, then just stick them in here and you'll be eligible for voting. And if not, then there's always next month's contest!
Ezra Tyrius wrote: I'm pretty new to this sort of thing, I have these two chaps waiting for their paintjob:
I'd love to have them painted soon, but real life is sadly 'nomming my time like a Ripper brood eating a Guardsman at the moment.
So I guess my main question is: will I get BLAM'd if I don't make the deadline?
you should make a diorama of these guys fighting each other, or maybe a diorama base they can fit into.

Not late at all, there's no limit on how late you can enter apart from the deadline itself. If someone wants to enter the comp, post a Proof and the finished model all in one post on the final day, then even that's fine (if a little extreme!).
I'm intrigued to see the fate of those Bitz now...
Well, I keep checking out the thread to see what's being entered, so I've clearly got the bug
Here we go, proof pics of my Ravenwing Command Squad (5 bikes):
I'm waiting on delivery of new plasma talons, so we're looking at a maximum of four right now, hopefully the five. Let's hope my painting skills aren't all forgotten

Nice!
Cheers trying out a cooler more sun-bleached bone scheme. Never really liked the warm profiterole-looking bone colour of the usual Deathwing scheme. Loving it so far
id like to enter if its not too late, im currently working on these guys for a commission
i have to strip then paint these space marines, i finished stripping the first one this morning, and just finished priming his partially dismembered body
would these work?
Paradigm wrote: OP updated, and getting pretty massive now! At this rate, if everyone finishes, this could be one of the biggest Polls in the history of Dakka!
I'll drink to that (we really need an 'orc drinking' emoji ㅋㅋㅋㅋ)
He hit all of the poll options - Being a Space Marine, A Veteran, Having plenty of Dakka and I plan on trying a few relatively new techniques that I dont do that often...
He has all weapon options available, too.
Muauahahah! Join us in our comfy neodurasteelacrete coffins and live forever! The first few centuries are boring but then the dementia sets in and things get fun!

I already have the base coats down on my HG, so I’m going to stick with him. And as Zambro pointed out, venerable dreads hit pretty much every category you care to name, so I might save him for another month. He’s bound to match some future poll.
@Zambro: I look forward to seeing where you go with that Dread! Done right, there's just about nothing more 40k than the box on legs that is the Dreadnought!
@Nev: future topics for the comp will be a lot more open, this will probably be the first and only faction-specific one, so whatever else you have will be applicable further down the line for sure!
commissarbob wrote: @ queen_annes_revenge, yes, I sculpted the hoods on the originals and cast in clear resin for personal use only as an experiment.
theyre ace. how easy is that casting resin to use? i wouldnt mind trying some for water and the like for bases.
Unless you are going to use it in molds, like sculpting the water effect you want then making a mold of it, you are much better off using proper water effects stuff.
That resin is not viscous enough and has a far faster curing time than you can use for "sculpting" water effects with, like you would with some of the woodland scenic's stuff.
However you can use it, with a little oil paint to add colour mixed in to one part of the resin before mixing, for underwater parts of dioramas etc.
OK so I have magnetised the head and arms of my captain for no reason what-so-ever and sprayed him grey.

yeah i figured that may be the case..i was thinking mainly for scenic pieces showing people dying in acid or stealthy predator esque killing scenes. might invest in some.
Possibly a bit big (isn't it a Termie Sgt head, or is my bit-fu failing today?), but that's pretty much impossible to avoid with Marines. For the hell of it, I tried some true-scale 32mm heads on SM the other day (left over from Malifaux) and while it came a lot closer to various bits of artwork, it really looked too small in the context of the model.
you should make a diorama of these guys fighting each other, or maybe a diorama base they can fit into.
I was going to suggest that too, the pair of them going head to head in an epic duel would be an awesome touch!
That would be awesome indeed
If anyone has some good tutorials or advice concerning diorama bases, I'm all ears
Youd just make it like a standard diorama, but cut out 2 holes for the dudes bases. And obviously have some sort of witness marker in the terrain which would show you how to line up the miniatures correctly. Some good bases for dioramas are the gw movement trays. Or you could use cork tiles which is my personal favourite and just have the actual scenery as the base

Ah, that explains it. You're right, it is the termie sarge head. Thanks for confirming that. It looks like it's back to the bits box to give this fella a transplant
I am very much wanting to do a Black Legion army up (ultimate goal but that's a long way off ). Hoping to make the black pop with highlights , so will be playing around with a few things to see what will work.
I am enjoying the Dark vengeance miniatures as well very highly detailed !
Had recently rescued all of my hobby stuff and bought some new paints in case i ever felt inspired to do any modelling. Is this still open to entrants?
Yep, as said before you can enter at any point up to the deadline! So if between now and the end of the month you're inspired to pick up a brush and paint up some Marines then you can enter into the challenge!
I've not painted anything in around 3 years now.... I'm currently sitting at work having converted my farseer last night extremely excited about the idea of painting this bad boy!!!
So thank you for this, I haven't had the joy of painting for a long time, even though I own more than tripple my own body weight in plastic!!
Just spent the last little while making this guy, i wanted to give him a Bolter but i felt it looked too large and harmed the pose i was going for. That's the problem with marines, if you want to give them interesting poses they need to be Art-scale or extensively reposed, i just don't have the skill to resculpt the smooth armour plates. Being a bit of a downer aren't i? I am still pretty happy with him.
Now, IMPORTANT QUESTION, scout head or no? I like scout heads for the most part, once they're de-hunched and their Lantern jaws are shaved down a bit they look great but i like the faceless brutal look of a Marine helm. The thing is does he look more heroic saviour (scout head) or, 'i'm walking over here to come curb stomp you' (Marine head, thinking mark V).
Perkustin wrote: The thing is does he look more heroic saviour (scout head) or, 'i'm walking over here to come curb stomp you' (Marine head, thinking mark V).
Looks very very good, stop being so hard on yourself! I'd vote heroic (face visible), but what were you going for with the pose (which is very cool)? It looks like he's about to embark on saving someone(thing), but do you want him to stomp something(one)? Up to you.
Got three put together tonight before work, incoming snow means I can probably get some serious work done in the next few days. but here is my start and the rest on sprue in the background
Para, can I use an older miniature? I don't know if he counts as a Marine per se but, he is the proto-type PA guy from RT era. I just got him in the mail. (Picture not mine, I just did a quick google to show what I am talking about.)
Spoiler:
I also have Solar's GMS marine I need to do, along with a RT era Beakie Sergeant. I already have paint on the GMS Marine though. If I strip it and start over (horrible over washing happened,) and provide proof that I stripped him to bare bones plastic, can I do that?
Also perk, I love that marines collar. It is very knightly.
Managed to find a slightly smaller, oversized head. It has a bionic eye too, which suits the chapter fluff quite nicely, so that's a bonus.
I'll paint that up tonight, snip off his old one and replace. Lovely.
Lots of great looking entries so far, looking forward to seeing more!
Does the entry have to contain an actual space marine, or would clear evidence that there is/was a space marine in extremely close proximity suffice?
I swear I'm not being awkward on purpose, there's a diorama I've wanted to do for a while, and it ties in with the theme.
It would make total sense when finished, but the "before" figures may well make it look like I didn't understand the subject at hand.

So long as it's at least tangentially related, then you're good to go! If you want a Demon Prince bursting from the remains of a Chaos Sorcerer, or what's left of an Ultramarine after a Carnifex has been through town, then go for it!
I really dig the harness and pads for that Guardsman, well all of the custom work really.
Nevs honor guard looks like he's coming along well, nice smooth gold.
Tech-skull biker with a giant hammer is also pretty darn cool
I think I have that cybermonical head one a marine or two, I like it. If you aren't going to wear a freaking helmet you may as well have a sick bionic eye and be screaming
I'm puttering about with the Dread. I cut the fuel tanks out of the arm and the power supply is gonna fit, but now I've gotta put it in place and fill a bunch of gaps left over from removing the tanks =/
Dag.. that biker... I wonder if runninga bike list would be the way to get over my issues with space marine height, its not as noticeable on bikes!

Awesome! In that case, here's my entry's "before".
OP updated, and it is one behemoth of a post! I'm trying to figure out how to 'super-spoiler' the list on entrats, but can't seem to get it to work (it just closes the spoiler at the next /spoiler tag, is there a way round this?).
Anyway, some numbers:
- 47 people have entered the competition!
- 33 of those people have posted Proof Pics
Like I said a while back, this is going to be one hell of a poll if everyone finishes. Does anyone know if there's an upper limit to the number of poll options? If there is, and we end up going past it, anyone got ideas on how to do voting? I was thinking heats of (insert number here) with the top 2-3 from each Heat going through to one final poll?
Automatically Appended Next Post: And we just got featured on the Dakka homepage! Hooray.
*thinks of the extra entries that might generate, sees the size of the OP already, dies a little*
Worth it, though, as already we're getting a flood of awesome ideas in here!
It might have been a few months before your time but i believe the Infinity painting competition had one heck of a lot of Entrants. Actually IIRC it wasn't done by Poll, you'd have to look it up.
I must agree that there has already been some very inspirational stuff. It's increased the time and usefulness I'm getting out of Dakka no end, and I've even decided to start a plog because of this comp!
You could always consider putting them all in a gallery and then either trying to keep it on the homepage for a while or getting people to click on the blog and rate people's modes and then at a certain time check the ratings and just say what the highest ones were. It would open to some sort of abuse but it depends how trustworthy we believe the people of DakkaDakka and the wider internets are.
Or the really annoying solution could be to get people to PM you with their top three (ranked of course)
My other suggestion is a massive google docs spreadsheet.
I know these are pretty obvious and not massively helpful but I just wanted to chuck them out here to see if they could inspire a good solution to the problem, you know brainstorming and that or whatever we're supposed to call it now.
Anyway I realised although I have got my WIP phots I haven't put them on here. Oooops! Well hopefully this has fixed it. If anyone is interested in their progress feel free to clicky on the plog linked in my sig.
I finally got my idea! I guess it will be a mini diorama. I have a 'spare' Sister of Battle and Marine, I will put them fighting back to back. I may scale up the space marine a little so they are the size they are supposed to be. I am stripping the minis now. . .

Started doing some painting tonight. Mixed feelings. Messed up my apothecary to the extent that he's currently in the Dettol bath to strip the paint off - bit of a morale killer. Still managed to get these bits down, but took far too long! (Not to mention that their pads and highlighting aren't done ). I'll never get the whole squad done by the end of March for the painting competition deadline and the face is pretty terrible, I just can't seem to get it right. Pretty despondent right now. Here's a photo:

wouldnt be too down fella. The sword looks awesome. White paint could be thinned down a little more though. For the face, I'd apply an overlayer of thinned fleshtone to soften it and then add a thinnned wash and highlight again
I think I'm going to have to bow out guys. Mundane life just got real busy all of a sudden and I don't think I'll have the time to do the comp justice. Will be following along though... wonderful work on display so far.
I made a second Armsman, just need to get some pictures of them, I need to wait for a nice sunny day to do the original justice anyhow, he is done and I'll post up pics of them both later.

The white areas were actually highlighted on, so would you have just suggested that I painted them as crisp pure white without layering?
The face has had so many layers already! Couldn't get the eyes right and whenever I tried highlighting I just couldn't get it to look right.
I'll try your suggestions and see if I can make it look better. Not the best start.
Grand start! I was meaning the white paint looked a little thick. Dont think the face is as bad as you think. I see what you mean about the eyes. A couple of gentle washes may help to soften out the highlights and give some more subtle depth to the eyesockets. By no means a bad job though. How you thinking of treating the black armour?

I hate doing faces I'll try the washes and see if it softens things. Am going to highlight the edges, but will wait until I have more armour to highlight and do it as a batch

Probably being too critical as I'm trying to do something I'm not confident with
really impressed with that whole DV boxed set. Awesome quality for an awesome price Twas a cracking first purchase to get back into painting
I was sucked in the moment I saw it! Nephilim Fighter . . . mmmmmmm Me likey. That's probably next on list after I've finished this command squad and two tactical marines (so I can complete a 10 man squad)

Havent got the expansions yet. Def gonna pick them up at some point. Chaos Landraider and raptors.....tidy!!!! Still nowhere near finished the main DV box. Got the Tac Squad, the Helbrute and the CC cult squad finished. Fair way still to go and I still have a Wave Serpent to paint up Mymeara style like the wraithlord I just finished. plus all the Harli stuff my fiance got me for Valentine's day. Hahahahah - bloody love it. Painting like a lunatic
@Gitsplitta: No problem! If you do have time to come up with something before the month's out then you can of course still enter, if not then no worries, and I hope things sort themselves out! Given the success of this so far, there will definitely be a challenge next month, so maybe you can enter there!
Operation successful! The new head fits much better.
Just a few bits to go now, then I can think about chapter markings and weathering.
I've got hold of some pigments that I'm itching to play with

They're fantastic. I don't know how they do it but someone made a transparent Bilbo model for the LotR game to use whenever he puts the Ring on.
I have a feeling the Bilbo cast in clear resin was actually a promo-mini in the early days of the LotR range (I have a feeling he was event-only, y'know, back when GW did events beyond their own! ), but I imagine the theory is the same; make a cast of the model, buy some clear resin, pour it into the mould as you would a normal cast and the job's a good'un.
Obviously, it is technically recasting, so to avoid dragging this thread into a debate on that I'll just say that it's doable, and going from those Proof pics, the results speak for themselves!
I believe there is also a clear-resin Predator from the AVP KS coming, but that may be KS-exclusive.
Buttery Commissar wrote: Does the entry have to contain an actual space marine, or would clear evidence that there is/was a space marine in extremely close proximity suffice?
I swear I'm not being awkward on purpose, there's a diorama I've wanted to do for a while, and it ties in with the theme.
It would make total sense when finished, but the "before" figures may well make it look like I didn't understand the subject at hand.
So long as it's at least tangentially related, then you're good to go! If you want a Demon Prince bursting from the remains of a Chaos Sorcerer, or what's left of an Ultramarine after a Carnifex has been through town, then go for it!
Awesome! In that case, here's my entry's "before".

Well, as noted in the post with the proof pic, I had an idea for a personal project which involves using the clear resin to give a unique effect for the active chameleoline. So yes, while they have been modified, they are largely a re-cast of Games Workshop figures. That being said, they are for personal use ONLY and will not be sold or traded for personal gain for any reason. The mold has been destroyed and no further cast will be or can be made. If the moderators of the boards have a problem with them, I will remove them, no questions asked.
Wip. Brother Dardariel is coming along. Base layers all done. Washed and tied up. Next comes his zenithal top lights and the wetblending. The fun bit really want to get at all those harlequins my fiancé biught me yesterday. Must......resist!!!
Dammit. iPad you arse. Pop the photo in the right way up!

It does look weird from this angle. Yes, it's his force weapon, a katana. I glued him so it looks like he has his katana mag-locked to his power pack while he's busy shooting lightning from his right hand and fireballs from his left.
Nah you're not late TDL, only started two weeks ago
Here is a still pretty WIP update on my entry:
I'm not happy with the gold (Vallejo model air gold) It came out with little bits in it, I'll try a few washes and a few more layers of gold to fix it. Just that, might re-paint the chest skulls (22 skulls on this model) and think of something to do with the gigantic axe. Khorne Bloodthirster eat your heart out.
Not sure I'm going to be able to complete the challenge as I have damaged the tendons in my right hand playing rugby last weekend and can't hold brush properly at present.
I added the space marine casualties to my order as part of the golden ticket entry last week partially for this competition and also since I've wanted those for a while. I plan on painting those to go along with my other dead space marine. When I get them I'll post proof pictures, but right now they're still stuck in MS somewhere due to the ice storm shutting down the fedex hub and GW main shipping... Heck, our local GW didn't even get its normal inventory for this week, due to the weather.
Noodles, It's looking really good so far, are you planning on leaving the helm white? I'm still jealous of everybody who can paint yellow super well.
OMN, that guy is looking awesome! Love the crushed Word Bearer on the base, and the yellow is fantastic. Any weathering plans, or are you keeping him clean?
Although it really can't compete with some of the talent on display here, here are a few WIPs of my Wolf Lord. Still a fair bit to do, but he's coming along nicely enough for my standards.
More Cassor the Damned goodness He's had a coat of Leadbelcher and a wash of Nuln Oil to all the metal/silver bits since the pic was taken but alas, camera's battery ran out of juice. Here you go..
Annd for some reason my pics are all showing sideways.. ffs.

I thought you were a DA! *Throws back head and wails*
But, I think I will stick to what I already asked about. (Poor GMS is probably sick of waiting on his marine anyways! (Thanks Papa Nurgle, if you catch my drift. ))
OMN, that fist is stellar. The contrasting shoulderpads make the model.

Yeah, between what I see so far and the Golden Throne project makes me want to sell my paints. But, this contest is the kick I need to start painting... and there is an event this weekend I signed up for at my FLGS just so I could paint.

I think AoV (like myself) suffers from CADD (Chapter Attention Deficit Disorder)! Too long painting one Chapter and he has to go to another! Although I think he's managing to keep to just DA and BA, while I have 4 Space Marine armies that are technically 'in progress'

Yeah, it's hard to fight. I just love the marines and their little gubbins, especially if you give them trophy bits. (Problem with nid bits are, they're so big they fit on dreadnoughts and termies better than Marines.) I am just about to ding 1000ish points for my Sons, and I am planning my own chapter. Problem is I am eyeballing Krieg and Scions... (and I told myself that if I paint all my Sons then I get to get an Imperial Knight.)
@para: Thanks mate, glad you noticed the word bearer , I might do some weathering, yellow is a good colour for battle damage. Your Wolf Lord is looking none too shabby, that's a cool conversion of the AoBR captain, love the base and the freehand designs on the pads and cloak Great work on the fur too !
@ Schlyne: Yellow isn't that hard, just like all marines it's really really tedious without an airbrush for lots of marines. Yep, white helmets are a thing of mine for veterans. might give it a dark wash to bring out more of the contrast though.
@angelofvengeance: Cool dreadnought! It's good that we are seeing a few of them being entered here.
Thanks stormwall
CADD has never been a problem with me, IGADD has, so many possible guard armies, not enough time to make them all ! I find marines too boring to paint many of them.
Cheers for the feedback on Cassor everyone. He should look pretty badass stomping his way to the front line with my Death Company squad (they're sort of taking a back seat for now as I may go into some sort of Red Thirst painting all those fething blood drops on them!!)

nice. How are these guys marines though?
Uh. He did say Armsman. The contest can be any Naval forces marine. You know, the actual definition of Marine, an amphibious soldier of the sea. The sea in this case being space as humanity has progressed farther than just oceans. That is why we're seeing dreadnoughts, all the way to dudes like this.
I think I explained that right, Para scold me if I didn't.

You subscribed to that too?
Absolutely. You need to go check out Phutarf and Klaus' stuff as well if you haven't already.
Anyways, I'd like to post something up here but, I got distracted with converting an old metal dreadnought , making an inquistor's henchman out of 40k and fantasy bits, and unboxing an order from zinge. Shame on me.

EDIT: Ninja'd!
Dreadnaughts are understandable, because they have space marines inside them. And i know the op said any 'marine' but a navy armsman isnt a marine, if were going by todays military system. Armsmen, corpsmen etc who are attached to marine units dont become marines theyre still navy ranks. Also space marines are the only marines mentioned in gw lore. Presumably to avoid confusion. Hence why i was unclear on the issue. But if the op says its fine then sweet
Ultimately, I'm not going to be picky about themes in this or future competitions. I'd rather see something a little creative and outside-the-box be submitted and shown off than retrict people in what they can/can't enter. So long as there is some correlation, however slight, between theme and entry, it's fine.
First time painting space wolves, screwed up the first one so bad I had to strip it completely so this is my second attempt! C&C always welcome, still have a lot of work left on this guy (highlights mainly).
@angelofvengeance: Thank you! I was painting him up as a Grey Hunter, did I get the knee pad wrong or something? The different space wolves sort of ranks still confuses me a bit as I don't really play the game lol, more into the hobby and painting aspect. I bought the space wolves painting book maybe I should have another look ;p.
Nah, he's fine for a Grey Hunter! Heraldry varies from Company to Company, but in general, a red right shoulder pad indicated GH-ness (the other pad being Company colours, in this case Ragnar's, I think).

I wouldn't know. Not a Space Wolves person to be honest. Was a stab in the dark- he certainly looks blinged up enough for a Wolf Guard I think.
GrimDork wrote: Are you making an entire army of these guys? They look cool as heck.
Not at this point but I might make a small landing party if I can find spare guardsmen, I love the art for these guys and would love them as a GW sanctioned army...
Think about it, small groups of armoured infantry with shotguns and assorted flyers and character upgrades that call down orbital strikes
And to top it off I started some controversy, a good days work!
There are some very nice looking models here! Just thought I'd drop a quick WiP pic of the model I'll be entering. More Flesh Tearer goodness can be seen in my P&M blog...

Well, for small games, you could run them to decent effect as IG Vets with Carapace Armour, Shotguns and any Special Weapons, a couple of CCS for Masters of Ordnance, and then some Valks or Vendettas (or Avengers/Vultures/other Navy assets from Forge World). Wouldn't be that effective at 1000+ points, but for small games and especially something Zone-Mortalis style it could be good fun!
Already made some alterations to the Sargent's backpack and added some more skulls. Trying to use standard tactical marines as LotD but I think I need more skulls and less flame.
Also my first crack at sculpting flames on a base.
The LotD minis are growing on me and I might need to pick up a couple more for later on down the road.

I'm probably gonna hate painting this thing with all of the bonus gubbins... oh well
Nice red on the bike btw.
Haha what a monster! Might get fiddly to paint but will surely look awesome once done!
And thanks, took about 4 coast mof mephiston red, then a brown wash, then another coat of mephiston red to get it to that point. (Most of my other BA get a sneaky mephiston red spray but bikes have too much that isnt red to justify it)
thanks. It's supposed to be a sorta chaplain as it is my representation of the Flesh Tearers High Chaplain Carnarvon using the Astorath rules, so he's a bit different from usual.
Some really nice models popping up here now, and that biker is looking very promising. Maybe slightlly biased as I have a particular soft spot for bikes...
