Hey all Dakka fellas !
A BIG project going on here…
Not necessary big as in loads of figures. But big because it implies learning the ropes of wargaming (I am a total n00b at WH40k, or 30k for that matter)
It initially started with the desire of painting a full size army, as currently I am only painting termies in different chapters, based on how much I like their appearance. Combined with some reading here and there, some basic wikis and some (read: a lot) of Forgeworld browsing, I decided to go with a pre-heresy Death Guard. They look cool, they have a great fluff, they don’t use a lot of tanks (this will help re: storage space).
I am currently reading (besides The Flight of the Eisenstein) the 40k bundle, mainly the history (2nd) book. Will then start with the 3rd, which is obviously the rules, and from there I’ll see how it goes and if I manage to get into playing this thing.
At the moment, there’s nothing much to see here. The figures were delivered, and will just outline them here:
- 10 man Tactical squad troops with bolters (with death guard shoulder pads and heads)
- 10 man Breacher squad
- 5 man Grave Wardens squad
- 2 man Command Set (will add 1 Praetor from below)
- 2 man Praetor set (will only use one attached to the Command Set, most probably the one in MK III armour, as I heard it’s supposed to be Garro of the 7th Great Company).
This should really be enough to start playing a game when the painting stage is done. Which will probably take a while, given I want to apply the primer and white basecoat from rattlecans, and weather here in UK isn’t exactly great at the moment. Eh, more time for cleaning I guess
I plan on modelling a loyalist 7th Company, and at this time I’m thinking of printing some names to stick on each base. The majority of them are taken from Flight of the Eisenstein, but won’t only be part of the 7th, but other companies as well. Let’s call it … artistic liberty . The destroyers’ names, which I plan on adding later, are from Distant Echoes of Old Night, and while the story takes place after the Heresy, their names aren’t chaotic or implying various diseases as it’s usually normal with Nurgle warriors. I might use 5 of those names for the Grave Wardens, though.
Also, the bases are resin ones. I really enjoy modelling my own bases, but for these ones I wanted to go with something that I really liked and saw some time ago.
That seems to be pretty much all the moment. It’s more ideas than pictures and results, but those will come in time.
As I plan this to be a quite long project, anyone can feel free to resuscitate it from the deep grave of forgotten threads
Thanks for looking!
Alex

Quick update here guys...
All bits cleaned, some of them still left on the casting blocks as i feel those will be easier to paint. I will paint the majority of parts before gluing the entire figure
Next, bases. I decided to ditch the resin casts as go with my own. I chose a rocky dark grey, to contrast with the Death Guards colours.
Grass turfs will be added in the end, after the model is pinned and the base is sealed with varnish.
Lastly, the terminator bases are complete (again, without grass turfs). I am thinking to add some water effects pouring from the ends of the pipes, maybe mixed with some green and a bit of yellow. In hindsight, a second coat of grey drybrushed on the outer edges won't harm...
That's quite all for the moment. Waiting for good weather to experiment on a test model with a few different options of priming/basecoating.
Thanks for looking

Not a lot of work going on sadly, thanks to the lovely weather.
Completed all the 25mm bases, and did some work on two 40mm objective markers.
There's still some stuff to be added, but at least THEY BLINK!
Was wondering if anyone knows of some cheap two-parts resin?
I'm not interested in casting, but i want to fill the bottoms of the bases to provide more weight and stability.
Also, if they'd come in smaller qtys, that'd be great
Cheers!

The undersides? You'd be better off sticking a coin under as resin hardly weighs anything.

Hello Dakka !
Small update going here with Mortarion's sons
Finally some good weather (read: a few hours) that allowed me to basecoat all the parts. I also managed to paint white about 1/2 of the parts, before the rattlecan decided to get empty.
Some pigments mere applied to create heavy damage and rusted armour, and will benefit from a second thin coat of white, and then will be rubbed with a toothbrush to expose the pigments again.
I also managed to airbrush the shoulderpads, flag and boarding shields, and the only remaining parts are the Warden's pads.
And after removing the masks.
Some touchup will be required, but that should go easy before damage application
And now, again waiting for some sun
Thanks for looking!

So here we go guys,
Test model complete, Garro of the 7th Company
Took me around 9-10 hours to finish him, obviously the rest of the army won't be as detailed as him.
Sadly i lost my camera's card so the pictures taken by phone should do for now, anyway quite ok to get an idea
Bad news? I managed to lose one breacher shield.
Anyone who might have a spare for sale, i'd be interested. eBay and bitz sites are empty on this one
Cheers!

Here we go with a super-late update...
Not much time to paint lately, but a nice addition (…or two) made its (…their) way
A Death Guard Contemptor (of which I plan to have 2 eventually) and a Deredeo with plasma cannonade. I tried to resist for a while, but seeing the beauty of it with all that plasma on its back was too much to say “no” again.
I plan on transferring some details from the Contemptor to the Deredeo, such as the molecular studs, the XIV and the death guard logo on his foot. I also plan on working on a respirator of sorts, but the carapace shape makes it difficult, so I’m still planning.
As I’ve seen there are not many “unboxings” in the wild, see below the contents of each set
Also, a quick fit of the Deredeo’s legs. I tried to somehow emulate the weight of this beast by “cracking” the earth around his feet. The effect is not as convincing as I’d wish it to, but still goes a far way from plain ground. Sadly, raising the cork’s edges any more would have looked a bit too unrealistic and also would have obscured certain details.
Back to the troops, I finished all the shoulderpads, the legs need to get some black painted, and about ½ of the torsos are done.
Sadly no pictures of those yet, so will update again in a couple of days
A few more planned things. Barbed wire on some bases, plus a second layer of orange rust on top of the big scratches. Detail pics as soon as weather allows to seal the powders under a layer of varnish
Thanks for looking!

Finally a proper update.
As you can see from all the pictures below, there’s a lot of work on pretty much everything, but all of them still need more
The closest to done are the shoulderpads, which have the colour degradation done will only get one more layer of battle damage once the entire figure is assembled.
Detailed shoulderpads for Assault squad
Plain shoulderpads with decals applied, for Breacher squad
Command squad shoulderpads, standard
Legs, torsos and stuff
Next, more work done on the bases.
Completed 2 objective markers
And pretty much done the bases for the Contemptors and Deredeo. Again, no grass will be added until all is sealed first
Contemptor 1
Contemptor 2
Deredeo – note that the top part and the pipe are not glued in place yet, to allow for minor adjustments based on the feet position.
That’s pretty much all for today.
New updates… “soon”.
Thanks for looking, comments and especially critics are welcomed

Really nice start, brave too jumping into forgeworld, but their models are fantastic.
I really love that base, sorry if I missed it, but was it airbrushed? Maybe on the stolen ideas list!
Good stuff.
88080
Post by: ciuncky
Thanks mate,
Indeed the 60 and 80mm bases were airbrushed as it was easier to get the colours the way i want.
The 80mm then got an additional layer of drybrush as things went a bit tits up after watering down paints too much.
I tried getting the same effect as on the 40mm bases that i finished before (pics above), but i ended with a much yellow-ish glow. in hindsight, i like this one more, but won't harm to have different glows for different bases/figures

Hi Mate!
Really love your work going on here.... grat looking colour scheme and really nicely weathered. Real gritty feel just right for the Death Guard!
the bases look cool too... nice use of materials and colours!
I will definetly keep an eye on this to see how you progress!
88080
Post by: ciuncky
Thanks Magos!
Been a bit disappointed initially, i much more liked the clean white, but as work progressed i started to love more and more the dirty look.
I expect the final result to have an even bigger impact
And now, some customisation work on the Deredo.
I used some rivet strips from Zinge, the colour difference should be enough to see what was added where
Head and kneeguards:
Top legs, right bottom leg:
And finally, the hull:
I have added a Reaver air intake, not sure if i like it, and if it should stay. Any inputs?
Still some planned work, mainly a brass Death Guard logo on the left bottom leg, as well as a cable going on the left side of the head guard and into it somehow. Plus a greenstuff XIV to mirror the position on the Contemptor.
As usual, thanks for looking!

Small update on the Deredeo. This is what I believed will be the final state of customisation, however I became unhappy with the XIV marking so I peeled it off and sanded the area. Planning on a different sculpt, same texture, but a better looking triangular base shape to fit the space on the hull
Particularly happy with how the pipe ended, it’s twisted wire so a few gaps appeared but should look fine after painting.
Any thoughts ?

Good stuff so far keep it up.

Post by: ciuncky
Thanks ghostmaker, appreciated ! Trying to keep up at a steady rate, however i’m a quite slow painter. Or a fast one with very little time
One more quick update. Heads for the breacher squad are done. I haven’t used the breacher version, but the standard one as I liked it a bit more
I might use those if I get any MK II kits, as I don’t like their helmets that much
And finally, torsos. A few more decals were applied and weathered on the Assault squad.
All battle damaged, and made me think I went a bit heavy on the bronze weathering. But then again, they’re the Death Guard! Weathering galore, then.
The only step left for torsos and heads at the moment is to apply a bit of orange rust powder to the larger damaged areas and seal them in.
Progress is also made on the guns.
I have changed a bit the loadout; I will add 2 flamers (the Sternguard kit ones) to the breacher squad instead of the ones available in the kit. In the end, this Legion can make better use of it…
Also, the breacher sergeant will get a power fist instead of the bolter, while the assault sergeant will get a power fist and a plasma pistol
New updates, soon (hopefully!)

Morning (or evening!) Dakka
Finally some proper modelling to show. In spite of sunny weather, perfect for BBQs and other stuff.
The Assault squad has been pinned to bases, torsos and both arms have been glued as well.
The only thing left to paint is on their right (trigger) hand, the black trigger cover and grip bottom.
I also worked a bit more on the damaged areas, and added a final layer of MIG orange rust that was sealed under a bit of Testors.
Here’s a close up of all the parts that got the treatment, both from Assault and Breacher squads.
Next planned action? Green …

Cool, returning customers
Thanks Magos, appreciated
I guess my painting really went up a notch. Or i'm incredibly good at hiding all the mistakes under the Guard's rust, grime and damage
Overall, i am happy with the outcome, and that's a first...
As a battle plan, assault squad should be done soon, with some more work on the breachers and some more green laid on other parts
And that reminds me i need to start searching for the camera's memory card. Like, the fifth time already...

Assault Squad nea...
Wait. I promissed thou more green. So green shall thou receiveth...
(With a few obvious touch-ups required)
A quick view of the Aiolos launcher
And now... Ladies and gentlemen, the assault squad near completion!
Still needs a few decals on the vexilla, then varnish, grass and some barbed wire on a few bases
And a quick back view of the vox, commander and vexilla
I plan on taking proper pics of each one as well as the entire squad as soon as they are varnished and done
As usually, comments are welcomed and critics appreciated

BBs could totally work! I actually used some weighting beads that i got for a few taller models, such as the contemptors or the standard bearer.
But in the end, it's pretty much same thing, round lead bits. Might just be safer to buy them rather than popping open a shell
Jehan-reznor wrote:Great stuff, keep it up!
Thanks, at the mercy of Mother Weather now but some motivation built up lately
weetyskemian44 wrote:Nice models, great weathering effects. Very authentic death guard.
Thanks! Though i'd not say Death Guard is easy to paint, or Forgeworld easy to work with, i'd say Death Guard would be good for any starter painter. Missed a spot? Crossed a line? More weathering, more damage!
I guess that only techniques will make a proper difference

Warboss_Waaazag wrote:I REALLY like the paint scheme on your Deathguard. The red on the sergeant is a nice, bold touch.
Thanks mate! The shoulderpad does not pop so much due to other details and the degrade i painted on it as well, but on the front eagle it really breaks all that bronze.
Though i have seen many paining the entire top part bronze, i couldn't stand that. Happy to see people appreciate it
MagosBiff90 wrote:All looking really good mate! Really I, pressive and great to see a DG army before the pestilance and corrosion...

Cheers! Not any pestilence here, but we need to talk about corrosion
Just wait to see the breacher shields, i should have an a picture later today (if the weather holds and i manage to seal them with some varnish).
On a different note, the books describe Garro as having a big aquilla with wings folded behind his back. Probably on top of the back collar or on top of the backpack.
I have seen some versions around with that piece, but for the love of me, wasn't able to find it on eBay, nor did my Google-fu helped a lot.
Any idea where i could find it, if some of you are long time players/painters and have a bit more knowledge? there are 80% chances that if i find it, i won't like the looks of it, but if it's a £1 or so, it's worth a try. Worst case, gets the bitz box treatment.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Work nearly completed on the shields
Front is done 100%, just a bit of weathering/grime on the back, another coat of varnish and i can call it a day
Really went to town on the weathering side. But hey, i had to make up for the not-so-badly-damaged armour that the squad has
I could say i'm in love with the way they turned out, i plan on using the same techniques on the dreads as well
Anyone who would vote against that much weathering??

Cheers mate! Shields were a true pain, decal-wise. But managed to get them down smooth eventually
Meanwhile, today i managed to put in some work on the bodies. I glued the right hands to the torsos, then the guns. Shields were blutak'd in place as i want to seal the figure under some varnish and the shield will block a lot.
A bit fiddly, but was happy with the final result.
Also done with the dirt and corrosion on the legs, and pinned to the bases. Much wow!
Then DISASTER struck. I glued the torsos to the legs, and when checking how they'd look with the shield on...surpise! It wasn't fitting, but was instead hitting the leg.
So i went back to breaking, fixing, testing... And about an hour later they were finally done
Phew. Close call

It's all great!
The weathering, the muted greens, the OSL bases...
They are just like I imagine the Death Guard to be.
Even the decals look perfect. Something that seldom works out in my experience. Would you say the Forgeworld transfers are better then regular GW ones, which tent to always leave a sheen around the symbol despite microsol/microset/whatever?
88080
Post by: ciuncky
Thanks Zywus !
The bases aren't really OSL, just some basic edge highlighting to bring up the details.
The decals however...i'm deeply disappointed in FW. I just feel that at £12.50 a sheet, it should really have decal demarcation. Instead, the carrier film is sprayed over the entire sheet, making it one HUGE piece that needs a lot of creative cutting to get off the sheet and to conform to difficult shapes such as the pads.
I know there are people who don't really care, but for me decal thickness is as important as the amount of carrier film. And that's exactly the thing that leaves the sheen you are asking about (know as silvering as well).
I always apply a layer of varnish before decals, and since i started doing that i had no silvering, not even once. GW's Ard'Coat technical helps a lot, no more need to spray figures when you can apply some by brush on the areas that you need.
That said, after some trial and error (in some cases) and a lot of patience when cutting (in other cases), FW's decals seem to be a notch over the older GW ones - haven't seen the ones they do now, but i'm curious to give them a try when i'll start my Adeptus Mechanicus

YOUR input is needed, brothers!
We have one piece Deredeo, one piece Plasma Cannonade, and 1 piece dilemma.
What colour should i paint the plasma ?
I've been thinking of Green, but there's the bright green on the base as well, and it might end being a bit too much
I've been thinking of Blue, but that's quite typical and i don't feel blue would work with their paint scheme
I've been thinking of Red, and this one pretty much wins for me currently. It would offer a nice colour variation, but i'm worried it will be in contrast with the green glow on the base.
Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated. It's all down to RGB, so to speak

Post by: ciuncky
A bit more work done here.
I decided to take a break from the Command Squad and move onto the Deredeo for a bit of variation.
First, more bitz that will have heavy rust on them:
Working on one part at a time, and started with the Aiolos launcher.
Main colours laid down, wash applied
And after a bit of more work.
The targeter lens was my first attempt at such a painting method, and i feel it ended up cool. Not the same as painting small lights, gems or eyes, which are much simpler/ugly due to size
If all goes fine, i should have the entire assembly done by tomorrow, then start on the cannonade
C&C welcomed as usual
Thanks for looking

Thanks mate! Much appreciated, coming from someone with your crazy skills!
And, now, time for update!
Aiolos all done, behold its beauty. Sadly the front bit containing the missiles has a quite bad fit on the bottom. I couldn’t test fit it as it went in quite difficult and I was worried I won’t be able to pull it out again.
After a bit of gluing, I was able to keep the parts in place and still move it up/down. However the small amount and small contact zone broke soon so at the moment I’m thinking of pinning it somehow, so it can still be moved, if needed (for fun, not that someone would actually NEED to move it). Nice part is that the fit is so firm that they sit in quite tight without any glue added.
Lo and behold
Starting on the Cannonade today. Updates, ASAP
Thanks for lookin!

Why? Well, i broke my airbrush.
After spraying bronze for the first time, i managed to break off the paint nozzle while trying to unscrew it for a full cleanup.

Well, i come bearing good news. After about 20 minutes of trying, and a broken xacto blade, i managed to clean the remains of the nozzle.
All i have to do is place an order tomorrow for a new nozzle and probably some airbrush cleaner.
Worked a bit on the guns, now i feel it might have not been the best idea to paint the entire cannonade in bronze.
Hopefully it will turn out better with the red glow. Or i simply overanalyse it (which i hope, as it'd be easy to fix lol)

Small advancements to report on.
The cannonade turned out absolutely horrible. Abomination of the hells. So I had to spend the better part of an hour rubbing them after soaking in Dettol.
Now they’re primed white, and I feel I’ll go for a very discreet, if at all, effect of glow. This weapon seems designed to work amazing with black or dark colours, but white looks weird on it for now. Will have to break it with some rush and brass out there.
Anyway, to break a bit from the disappointment of utter failure, I started on a drop pod kit. Really wanted to try them so I got one a few weeks ago.
At the moment I have the door halves glued, the fins and engine glued as well, and the central console and harnesses. So that makes 3 nice big pieces in the end. Waiting for some magnets as I feel I should get the doors magnetized.
Of course I had to overshadow it. Console was primed black and painted with Alclad Chrome, and after some more work I can declare it complete.
Aside from that a bit more work on the Deredo, painted the studs and applied some small patches of Palid Wych Flesh to create a small contrast when the wash is applied.
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate mould lines?

Finally more work done. And a lot of pictures to show it!
I've been jumping between the Deredo and drop pod lately, to get some variation. Let's start with the pod, where a bit more work was done on the central console, to create the impression of lighting
Also work done on the doors. I was planning to magnetise them, but seems i can get a good enough fit with no need of magnets.
Still in a fairly incipient phase, sadly the hazard stripes seem to differ a bit from door to door. Guess i can live with it anyway
And a quick overview of where i'm standing now
Back on the Deredeo, i decided to magnetise the arms, in case they'll release something even cooler than the cannonade
Work was done on the legs, and they're very close to being done. Some more battle damage, a dirt wash and some powders.
On second thoughts, i don't like the green bit on the back so much, i should work a bit more on the blending
And a quick overview, still far from done, but good to get an impression
That's it for now, comments, critics and suggestions are welcomed
Thanks for looking!

A new update after a lot of slacking and slow work. Very busy with my plan to start a Mechanicus Cohort Cybernetica, 3 Skitarii walkers and a nice diorama for all of them.
Anyway, back on the Death Guard. Some more work was done on the Cannonade, and even some people really like it, I feel there’s something wrong with it. I can’t put my finger on it, but I don’t feel like scraping the paint for a 3rd time either. With a bit of black from the heat exhausts, the underside of each plasma gun repainted white and weathered and a bit of damage, I expect them to look good an provide a nice contrast for the entire legion.
Plus, more paint spilled on the drop pod as well. I ended up magnetising the doors, and plan is to add a few cables around those magnets to make it look more … well, techy. I have been quite reckless in my painting, as I want to weather and damage it heavily – and what better option for randomness, if not the random mistakes I did ?
That said, doooooors opened:
…and closed:
What can I say, the “heresy shields” are cool, shame they aren’t exactly the correct size. Also not a consistent thickness, and when sides perfectly aligned, the window was anything but.
Still more work to do. Not sure when next update will be, as I will be leaving on holiday for a bit over 2 weeks
Thanks for looking !

Thanks Git !
Back from holiday and after a week of crazy work, finally a bit of time to work on the Big Fella and Drop Pod
Some battle damage was added, the cables were heated and twisted to the correct angle and now it's pretty much standing on his own power core. And magnets, for that matter.
The guns are pretty much done, just a bit of red needs to be added to the front nozzles and some black around the heat exhausts
As i said, the pod also got some attention. Doors are pretty much done at this moment
And all in place. Entry damaged was added with a very dark grey and then a layer of black on the bottom half
Looking forward to wrap them two up and move to Mechanicus for a break.
Critics welcomed!
Suggestions as well, as long as you don't suggest to re-paint the guns

Quick update here guys
Worked on a base for the drop-pod. It will sit in place via magnets. Interestingly, it fits perfectly on the new 130mm round bases that GW released, so i'll need to stick one under all the cork
Also, more damage, some pin washing and oxidising added to the Deredeo. Short of working on the eye lenses, it's pretty much done
Next updates, as soon as possible

Great work on Eddy and the Pods. Your Death Guard models are always inspirational to see!

Cheers mate, much appreciated. I feel the quality lately dropped a bit, probably because of all disappointment caused by the plasma cannonade. I am still not 100% happy with how it turned out, and my skills are the sole reason

Hey! Stumbled onto your log by accident, it was featured at the side oft the front page! I really like the pre heresy death guard color scheme, and your Deredeo looks cool! Great job on the battle damage, I'm still trying to figure that out myself.
As a suggestion I'd add some OSL to the gun barrels - right now they look kinda flat imho.
Keep it up!

Post by: ciuncky
Sadly that's how i ruined the first paintjob on the guns. OSL. My airbrush has a quite large pattern that's not suitable for this, and i'm terrible at doing it by hand.
Also, the yellow that can be seen on the guns was a light OSL, but majority of it got hidden by the exhaust smoke Automatically Appended Next Post: Mostly rainy Saturday, so i managed to lay down a bit more painted.
Continued work on the command squad.
First, the standard - really happy to see the text is readable. Sadly i wasn't able to get rid of those thick margins around. Thinking of using a cotton bud dipped in nail polish, but a bit risky...
And the rest of the work
Thanks for looking!

Yeah, your fantastic work continues to impress. I also agree with you that not everything needs to have OSL.

Thank you all, guys. by today i should have a few more updates for y'all. Most probably completed stuff
Trying to wrap up, the Grave Wardens will be delayed. I need a break from this scheme, and 40k Mechanicus will follow

Right! So, bank holiday here in UK, so a bit more hobby time.
I hope you'll all forgive missing photos from intermediary stages.
First, a group shot of the last few weeks' work
The drop pod is not really finished, needs the plastic base glued and a few touchups, but it made for nice decor
And if Forgeworld teached me something, it's that they are incredibly good at designing BACKS
A few more pictures can be found on the Completed thread, here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/653941.page
As for the Deredeo's head, i snapped it off and will repaint, without OSL. Too small of an area for airbrushing
Anything to say, shoot!
As usual thanks for looking

I think your weathering looks fantastic... most notably on the drop pod.
88080
Post by: ciuncky
Thanks mate! I am quite happy with how that turned out as well.
I tried not to apply as much on the smaller figures as it's quite easy to turn them into moving pieces of rust (as i have done with some old Grey Knights)

The only army I currently spend much time weathering is my orks... and even with orks it's pretty easy to get carried away.

looking great! love the dread! I do think that the cables need to be a different colour than then the armour. just a minor pet peeve of mine. Otherwise those models came out extremely well!

Haha, tell me about it. Here's my (offtopic) second painted squad of termies, and first attempt at rust and weathering. I call them The Forgotten Brethren
Anyway, no updates on your Bad Moon orks in a while

Tried black before, but wasn't really fitting the overall scheme. Red or green were out of question, as those would provide too much contrast. I'd probably end washing the cables two or three times more, to darken them more than the armour

I think those look fine man. My stuff is way too squeaky clean to be believable... but I have so many painted figures I just can't bare the thought of re-doing all of them.

On-topic, i have started work on the 5 Grave Wardens and the Contemptor - which sadly still misses his hands, and i can't decide how to outfit him
I really like the fist+keres combination. Whaddya say?

Post by: ciuncky
A bit more work done today. Some green laid out, Mechanicus Standard Grey for the metals and all washing done
Next step will probably be bronze on both Contemptor and Wardens

'hunngh' that weathering on the death guard I can't handle it.... it's too good!

Post by: ciuncky
All right everyone, quick update here.
Decided to arm the big guy with a melta and claw, specific to Death Guard.
The idea is to model him with the fist clenched, holded backwards, gaining momentum to bury someone's face
And a side capture, for a better view, of course final pose will slighly differ as nothing is glued yet
Bronze is pretty much finished, just needs an agrax wash and some verdigris locally
And a close up, showing work completed on the sculpted battle damage
Remaining battle damage will be done as on other models, with a sponge and powders
Next up, more washing and touchups
No advancement on the Wardens as of yet

these look amazing, though I am partial to my own death guard...... most of whom are not all that well painted
If you don't mind me asking, how are you doing the off-white color? I've seen it done so many ways that by this point, I'm just curious
88080
Post by: ciuncky
Thanks dude!
It's basically FW's paint scheme with a twist
So, white undercoat, then local spots painted with Ushbati Bone to darken the wash.
The wash is then applied, 50/50 Sepia with Medium for small figures and 20/80 for large models such as the contemptors and the pod.
Last step is to add a layer of watered down Ushbati on the middle of the plates, and an additional one - more of a thin line - on top of that, once it dried.
Granted, i skipped the last step on large modes as the Sepia was already watered a lot.
Then weathering, damage was done using pigments and dirt on the bottom was done using FloriModels wash.
Hope this helps, and best of luck with your huge DG force!

Man, you did a straight up amazing job on those Death Guard! I don't want to seem like spam, but that's really all I can say, it's just that impressive! Were those beads something you added? They look good.

Thanks for stopping by!
Seems this thread made it to page 4, so that naturally calls for more pics. Well, i don't have any
Not much progress lately...
The studs/beads were part of the model on the Contemptor
I added them on the Deredeo, those are some lead beads a dude sells on eBay to weight down the bases of models. Nothing too fancy, really

A bit more work has been done today. Both for Death Guard and Mechanicus, so feel free to stop by over there as well
The verdigris has been applied on the Contemptor, and on the pod as well - thus getting it to a 100% finished state.
Magnets added to the base - a bit more painting needs to be done to look all good. Pod can therefore be set on the base straight, or at an angle, to simulate a failed landing
And the Pod
Also, while at an angle, the Sergeant door can open and perfectly touch the table (the rest of door will remain suspended).
That's it for now!
As usual, comments, ideas, objections and cakes are most welcome

Post by: ciuncky
Right, everyone. More work on the Contemptor, but really very little time to paint lately
All that's left at this point is to add some blood on the claw, to add some heavy rust/pigments in a few places and seal it. Then some grass tufts on the base and all wrapped up. But with current weather, i doubt sealing will be possible anytime soon (read: anytime this year)
Next update will probably show some progress on the Wardens. Till then, throw critics

Thanks Gits. I got inspired by Phutarf's version, but my skills didn't keep up. His is absolutely stunning, but then again he spent more time than i'd have in a year

Base looks great on that Contemptor, what did you use for the grate on it?
I concur about time, I get maybe 30 minutes in the morning before work and 30 mins-1 hour after and anytime in the middle of the night I cannot sleep.

The grid was done by using some plastic sewing canvas. Heated a bit to keep in position the broken piece.
It is fairly thick / small empty areas, so it works best on 40mm bases and up. On 25mm it obscures too much
Hope this helps mate

Right guys, a bit of sun so i managed to put a bot of rush, seal under a layer of gloss, do a few oil streaks, more rust and sea with matte.
Blood will follow on the claw and then pics added to the Completed thread

Many thanks guys, i feel i need to take a break from the Guard for a while. I've been working on it for the past half a year or so and the Mechanicus really help with distraction.
I'll post an update here as soon as i get the nice pics done for the Contemptor, Drop Pod and Deredeo (after i finish for the 5th time his head).
