We all have some "go-to" games we enjoy / relax to.
What tabletop or even board-game is one you like the most?

Any "mixed feelings" games I would like you to avoid like I happen to like 40k but it can be a love-hate thing.

For some reason playing Battletech is as natural as breathing to play for me and I tend to like the most.
X-wing is very quickly catching up however.

Thanks, this is also a means for me to look at anything I was not aware of.
I like all kinds of gaming and am interested what my peers play.

If any of you say Risk, you must have many late nights under your belt...

Warmachine is my favorite.
Dropzone is really catching on me.

I still like 40k but it annoys me so much for a competitive game. Go figure the 2 games I really like are very tournament focused.

Chess. I rarely feel salty during/after chess.

Coup is a quick bluffing game that I thoroughly enjoy. Under 20 bucks, too - really fun.

Lastly, Settlers of Catan. I always have fun playing that.

Kings of War is doing a very nice job of filling my fantasy mass combat needs at the moment.

I would say that it has replaced Warhammer Fantasy for me - but, really, I am enjoying it more than I have any edition of Warhammer since 3rd. (Next step will be trying it out resolving background battles for a fantasy roleplaying game - which is what attracted me to Warhammer in the first place. ) So, I really can't say that it is just a replacement - I enjoy it too much for its own sake.

Hell, I enjoy it as much as I did the old TSR Battlesystem, but have played it a heck of a lot more often..

Deadzone continues to be awesome - I just wish that I could play it often. (And that Orx weren't quite so... effective. These aren't GW squabbling Orks - these are professional soldiers. GW Orks and Orcs are just as much fun - but very different in their behavior on the table.)

Mordheim... has long been my favorite GW game. And if any game deserves the accolade of 'forging the narrative' it is Mordheim. Necromunda also continues to be fun - but I am a fantasy gamer at heart.

For coffee and warm up: Yahtzee, Farkle, Love Letter. Sherlock Holmes: The card game ("The game is afoot!"). Magestones.

For an evening: Heroclix (older version considerably more, sans figure cards). DungeonQuest, Wings of War, Cthulhu Wars.

For a week: Talisman.

These are my "You could convince me to come over on short notice to play" games. My "wouldn't leave the table if offered a game" list is longer and less sparkly.

Not exactly tabletop or board game, but Magic: The Gathering is pretty much my go to game with most of my mates. Quick setup, quick to play and with the amount of cards all of us have we can put together pretty much unlimited deck variations so things never get old.

I don't have any friends who wargame, so I have to rely on my FLGS for that but I also don't have a way to transport my mini's at the moment so I can't really get to the store.

Fuzzy Heroes! A miniature war game you play with children's toys; the stats of your 'model' are based on the action figure/stuffed animal's physical attributes. It's fast and hilarious.

(KISS action figures are so unbelievably ripped...)

Lately its been Bolt Action. It plays fast and really keeps you on your toes with the random activation thing.

Otherwise 1st edition AD&D or Mordheim.

And I play Pool too, 9 ball is a favorite.

X-Wing: Good suspense involved with dials and actions.

Tactics II

According to the box, it is (literally), the grandfather of all wargames. If you've never tried it, good luck finding it, but it's worth it. I love board games. I'm can't even count as many as I have, but that is the best. A close second is Solar Quest. It's like monopoly, but your space ship can run out of fuel AND has lasers. LAZZZZZERS

For simplicity, relaxation, no-stress play and just plain fun factor, I go to one of these three.

X-Wing.

Dreadball.

Zombicide.

Dreadball: My go to game for certain fun

Dead Man's Hand: Simple but brilliant, always have fun with this one

Bolt Action: If my opponent leaves observers at home its good fun. If not, then meh. They're debatable game breakers, but certainly FUN breakers for me. "Oh you've rolled a single 4 and ruined my entire army, good game."

Spartacus: I have a love/hate relationship with this one. I'm VERY good at it and can almost always see the required combos I need to get through a lot of influence in a short space of time. The problem is though that sometimes people can fluke a good run and beat you regardless of the fact they had no plan.
I hate that.

Warmachine such a hard game to master but lots of fun to play

X wing even though I'm the worst pilot in the galaxy I still have tons of fun

Judge Dredd loved the comic and being able to play it out on the TT makes it even better

Power grid is the board game my buddies and I enjoy playing on a Friday night

Bloodbowl for me, theres just something that I really like about the mix of skill and luck.

Easy to pick up and not many minis to lug about, I like it when its a good even game, I enjoy it when i am Gobbos or flings up against it and i absolutely love it when I am an agility four team.

Does that make Little Wars (by H. G. Wells) the Great-Great-Grandfather of all wargames?

I've never played Tactics II, but I have played Small Wars - it was good fun, if a bit simplistic. A friend owned one of the older versions, but we never got to play.

Avalon Hill was my introduction to wargaming. (Not counting The Us Marines vs. The Invasion of the Cheap Plastic dinosaurs - played by every little boy that owns a bag of plastic soldiers, and another bag containing plastic dinos, with as many editions as there are players....)

Unsurprisingly, I really like Arcadia Quest. I confess, I only bought it originally for the miniatures, intending to use them with SDE, but Arcadia Quest is actually a much better game than SDE hands down.

In Sirlin's articles on game design, I remember him saying that a great game is not a game where you can't add any more, a great game is a game where you can't take anything more away, yet it still retains everything that makes it a great game. I think Arcadia Quest exemplifies that principle. For example: In SDE you have traps which can be triggered on the map, traps come in all different shapes and sizes, there are rules for positioning them, they can have different status effects and attack values, and there are more rules for disarming them etc... It's quite involved. So the first time I triggered a trap in Arcadia Quest I thought "oh gwad! here we go, gonna have to spend ages figuring out the rules for resolving traps" *flicks through the rulebook*, but to my delight, all you need to do is take a wound and throw the trap away, simples! And that's a good thing, because the game isn't about traps. Traps only exist to make you think twice about exploring, the AQ traps accomplish that perfectly without needing to slow the game down and be distracting. Which lets you focus on the parts that make the game fun, like killing other players

zgort wrote:Chess. I rarely feel salty during/after chess.
I also like Chess, it is very much my "go to" game to chill out, but I think I've also played it enough that it has become more about pattern recognition than actual heavy thinking, which I think makes it a lot easier on the frontal lobes. Whenever I suggest to friends that we have a nice "relaxing" game of chess, I always see their face contort. They seem to get a headache at the very prospect of having to think about chess.

Nothing GW since last Summer...

Now it's;
Kings of War or
Bolt Action

I know I made the right decision changing from GW stuff as my wife actually asks me to play KoW or BA - she always had to be coaxed into playing WFB or 40K.

With slightly less wargamey pals, it's Frostgrave or Zombicide.

I also do RPGs
Dungeons and dragons 3.5, 4, and 5th
Pathfinder
White wolf systems, basicly all

World of Warcraft P&P

Board games like zombiecide and the world of Warcraft ones also.

Bolt-action, any of the warlord games rule sets are pretty good really.
Warhammer (40k and fantasy), even with the wonky rules, I enjoy 40k. Yeah there are some balance problems, yeah some rules are broken, but in a normal game, most people won't abuse those, so you don't bump into them as often. fantasy, I loved, the setting, the models, most of the rules. AoS has some similarities, mainly the models, the change just did a lot of damage for me, having played 7 or 8 games of AoS.

I always enjoy 40k on the occasions I get to play it. It has its issues, but for playing with friends and for spectacle, its hard to top.

KoW is always good, as is LotR for skirmishes.

Another one that's more of a board game is the D&D adventure system games. For when you can't/don't want to set up a full D&D campaign, the pre-generated characters, self-running Dungeons and pared-back rules so simple you could train apes to play, it is great fun for an evening or afternoon of hack'n'slash action, and being co-op for up to five players, it's great for non-gaming family and friends as you're helping them along rather than tying to beat them. It's also easy to change the difficulty, just add more healing surges if it gets to hard.

A card game called "Hex Hex" is one of my favourites to kill an hour or two. We still enjoy Cranium. Carcassone is a crowd favourite. Lunch Money is good times.

Blood Bowl is great for one-on-one, and the minis for an "army" can be painted in a week, if you try.

Cards against Humanity is fun, but more of a pass-time than a game.

I can't believe that Euchre hasn't come up. I mean, there's no more, "If this bus is gonna crash, I'm gonna be driving!" game.

Low-stakes Poker can be fun, assuming no-one will be upset over losing $5.

If you can find it, Shadowlord was a game I remember from way-back, that I had fun playing.

Oh, and from waaaay back... Nightmare. The video board game. "Yes, my Gatekeeper!"

Necromunda for sure. First time I've played a game and had a character both my opponents and their models fear equally (although what would you expect from someone called 'The True Believer'?)

Also, recently played a boardgame called Bucket of Doom, and that was lots of fun - like Cards Against Humanity but with more imagination. I don't think I've ever played anything that ending up involving Lindsey Lohan Moth Orgies and Russian Cosmonauts attempting atmospheric re-entry in a wheelie bin in one game.

My favorite game by far is X-Wing. Not only is it the go to game for me and my friends, but I'm fairly active in the competitive scene in my area.

I also am a big fan of board games and my wife and I have been really enjoying Viticulture as of late. My wife isn't much of a gamer and it's hard to find a game with a theme she enjoys (she doesn't like sci-fi or fantasy, my two favorite things!) but we hit the sweet spot with Viticulture. It's easy to learn, relatively quick to play, and the theme is wonderful.

That looks quite cool, and would be an excellent excuse to drink more wine!

She might also enjoy Thurn und Taxis if you can find it. It's a little board game I was introduced to it by a girl I dated from Germany. It's set in 19th century Bavaria and you build little post offices and post routes, and you try to get the longest routes. It was good fun. (It's difficult to find in English, but the German language version is quite playable)

Warhammer 40k is my game. I love it mainly because I enjoy painting the models as much as (if not more than) playing the game.

I also love Star Fleet Battles. Pity I'm stuck with only solitaire scenarios (or playing both sides ) since I have no one to play it with.

I used to play Wizards of the Coast's excellent Star Wars Miniatures game (and still would, if anyone I knew still played). Despite being simplistic, it was loads of fun, and the miniatures were cool.

I have tried out a few games from Strategy and Tactics (and their affiliated magazines) with my dad. He has a LOT of those.

Bolt Action. What can I say? WW2 is an awesome setting and you can make some pretty tables with it. Check out Big P's thread in the Historical section about the wargame he is developing just for that pretty French ruined city table he made.

X-wing. I love x-wing. Guilt free impulse buys? Huge amount of custom ability without having to buy/assemble/paint new models? The Star Wars universe? How music from the movies always seems to play in my head while I'm playing? This is one of my favorite wargames.

Horus Heresy/30k: 30k is a better balanced version of 40k with awesome minis, a kickass setting and tons of support from Forge World. My only wish was that I had more money to spend on my Legion (XIII for the record).

Indeed. We both love wine so it was a good fit.

Thanks for recommendation, I'll check it out!

Dropzone is my go-to game when I'm looking for something with a lot of substance. When I'm looking for something more relaxed I pull out X-Wing.

Infinity is by far my favorite. For me it's the perfect combination of excellent minis, rules and fluff. I also play Warmachine and X Wing.

In terms of models and rules, infinity is my favourite game. The models are simply the best in the industry if you ask me. The rules set is sublime, beautiful, and brilliantly functional. It is intricate and detailed and is extremely well balanced, and allows for so many different things. That said, I don't rate it as a tournament game. I think it requires too much 'trust' in your opponents, and for thst reason, I would play it in a close group.

Warmachine hordes. Again, I enjoy the models (though not as much as infinity), the rules set is simple and straight forward, though with a lot of moving parts, and like with infinity, had a lot of intricacies and details. Balance is solid, and due to te nature of steamroller, it's very easy to just turn up and get games in. For me, though infinity is my 'favourite' game, warmachine/hordes is my go-to game for ease of play. The linked rpg material is great and I am also a huge fan of the lore. More than anything, this is what makes WMH resonate so strongly with me.

I play other games too. Dropzone commander is excellent. Flames of war is great fun. We plsy some historicals and Dux bellorum is a fun rules set, though I need to play hail caesar too. Also tried firestorm armada. Fun game!

Bolt Action is my favourite game I play right now. I also like Black Powder, Hail Caesar, Ronin, Flames of War and Lion Rampant. The Sword and the Flame is quite fun too.

I've got or in the process of getting stuff for 40k, Frostgrave, In Her Majesty's Name, Infinity, Bloodbowl, Killer Katana 2 and AoS but I've yet to play them or play them recently.

For Board games Puerto Rico and Dominion are my favourites.

Thanks a lot, this may be my go to list for exploring new stuff.

Darn you people being mainly Brits and Americans: no hunting you down and getting a game in. I think Talys is in Vancouver so might as well be in Britain...

Infinity looks easy entry.
"Frostgrave" I never heard of and saw it come up a couple times.

Seriously, I've been wargaming all my life, but I've never loved the hobby as much as I do now. WMH is a great, tight rule with fantastic and deep fluff. Infinity is the cyberpunk sci-fi tactical shooter of table top. Just an elegant rule set with such vivid game play. Perhaps the best quality minis I've seen. Malifaux's minis are the best plastic I've seen. The world and characters are just oozing personality and flavor.

It's a great time to be a wargamer.

Recently, throughout the whole summer I've been playing the old Starship Troopers Miniatures Game by Mongoose. Probably one of my favorite wargames of all time, and probably my favorite ruleset.

Occasionally, I will get a game of Warhammer Fantasy in, under 8th ed. rules. It has become more of a supplementary game, but I refuse to let it die out entirely, due mostly to the long history I have associated with it, as well as the sheer amount of models collected.

I try to get X-Wing in occasionally. Very fun game. But I'm terrible at it.

I have been playing Space Hulk (3rd edition) as well. A bit old-school in terms of mechanics, but I love it nonetheless.

I don't suppose I can say I love Warmachine/Hordes, but I'm certainly getting back into the swing of things, and I enjoy it to a degree.

I truly enjoy most of these games, and I'm happy that I can still play some of them (particularly Starship Troopers!)

We all have some "go-to" games we enjoy / relax to.
What tabletop or even board-game is one you like the most?

For my wife and I, our favorites include:

Arkham Horror
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
Lord of the Rings Deck Builder by Catalyst Games
Pandemic (fething game! Argh!)

From my old game group:

Battle Star Galactica board game (I'm not the fething Psylon! I'm the President and you will respect my Athori-tigh!) (I was totes the Psylon)
Talisman
Dominion
Cards Against Humanity (if potty humor and penis jokes offend you, you won't like it)
Lords of Water Deep? Not sure on the name, but fun worker placement game. My wife hates those so we don't play them, much.

Or playing RPGs. We were into HackMaster 4th Edition back in the day. Pathfinder is their currently RPG of choice. My new group really likes D&D 5th Edition. We play every Friday.

I've been meaning to take a look at the Batman game. From what I've heard, it really feels right for Batman (and if you can be Batman, always be Batman).

Unsurprisingly, I really like Arcadia Quest. I confess, I only bought it originally for the miniatures, intending to use them with SDE, but Arcadia Quest is actually a much better game than SDE hands down.

AQ has become the 'go to' game. Different every time, fun to play, new people pick it up really fast.

That's definitely true, you do get a real sense of the source material in how it plays. Batman is all about setting up positions then totally mauling guys before batclawing away, whereas someone like Ra's Al Ghul can just walk up and cut the heart out of the enemy team, soaking tons of damage and dealing it all back. Joker is completely unpredictable in a game where predicting the enemy play is essential, while Bane is quite straightforward but very hard to stop. Even the non-hero characters work like this, cops play like cops, ninjas play like ninjas, so on and so forth.

You can get a full crew for about £30/$60 if you take a beefy character or two, and there's a free version of the last rules edition still around (the only 'changes' in the new edition are mostly translation corrections), so despite the high model price it's no more expensive to play than something like Infinity or Malifaux.

And yeah, it's Batman!

40K is sadly the most played at my group but when I can I like to play other games.

Bolt Action fills my WW2/WW1 historical needs

Warmachine is amazing and really fun to play. The games are also far quicker as well.

Dark Age is a great grimdark style post apocalyptic skirmish game.

Battle. Fleet. Gothic. Enough said.

Games I and basically anyone in my circle will play without hesitation:
Space Hulk
X-Wing
Dominion
Pandemic

Games I like, with a caveat
Settlers of Catan (setup can really mess with the rest of the game)
Malifaux (love it, but it really takes more effort than I'm often ready for)
Infinity (just because we haven't played enough to be certain)
40k (can't really force it to be competitive)

Malifaux is my go to minis game.

I'm in a weekly online Blood Bowl league with 26 coaches.

Board/Card games:

Splendor, Dread Curse, Forbidden Island, Chaos in the Old World, BattleStar Galactica are some of my favorites. I don't own Small World, but it's great. Setters is a favorite, of course.

Well, given we are about to wrap up a 2+ year campaign, Pathfinder, but it's not really a board game.

I love Mordheim and Necromunda, as well as Gorkamorka (my favorite, really). Space Hulk is amazing and you can let a new player run the genestealers and feel pretty good about himself.

The D&D Adventure System games are amazing and really a blast. We use them whenever insufficient party members make it to the session. It's really nice that they work as a source of cheap minis and usable dungeons for other things too.

GW's Legends of the Old West is a great game, with a minimal investment for players who aren't supplying the scenery. If you have one aficionado, the rest of you just need to paint up a posse. I hate that they dropped their historical line, instead of just moving them to ebooks.

Munchkin is fun, but I've gotten burned out on it somehow.

I've always wanted to play Bloodbowl and BFG, but never had a group which could sustain the interest.

I still enjoy 40K, but the last few editions of WFB really soured me on the system, while exciting me on the models. Of course, our 40K games are few and far between, but they tend to be heavily scenario driven, so we don't notice a lot of the glaring balance issues.

Dropzone Commander. Every game is great, the pacing is quick, and it's an all around good time.

Star Wars LCG. Love this game, play it with my nephew a lot. Deck building is a snap due to game mechanics, and the game shines thematically and mechanically.

Boss Monster. Fantastic quick game, really neat gameplay.

Having played 40k in a bit, behind on painting.

Warmachine is my main game. I tried to play Infinity as a side game but its complexity (not a bad thing, mind you) made it kind of difficult so I am scaling back. I like Star Wars Armada although being a FF game, it has its flaws which won't be fixed for a long time.

I also want to play Saga and Dropzone Commander, but I had difficulty finding opponents.

Warzone Resurrection. This is the only thing I have found that really brings back that golden age feel from back in the 90s. I was a huge fan of the original, and dearly love this version. It flows better than 40K, and costs a hell of a lot less to play. For just a few hours I'm back in the mid 90s having a great time with some good friends like we used too.

Epic 40,000. I think it was ahead of its time from a rules perspective.

it was fast and relatively simple to play. It had tactical depth. Lists were easy to make and not very restrictive, while still generally producing actual armies. Blast markers were a great concept (similar to pins in bolt action). It also had alternate activations and order dice (similar to bolt action). Hell, bolt action probably owes a lot to it. BFG stole half its rules from epic40k.

The scale was great, it really showed off 40k well (although that was true of space marine and titan legions too).

Sadly it had a failed launch, because it was just too different from its predecessor and many fans were angered by the changes. But I really quite liked it. Probably one of the best rules sets I've ever played. I only wish it had come out when I was older and had more money and time to spend on it.
