Warhammer 40,000 FREEBLADE - MULTIPLAYER OUT NOW @ 2015/08/13 14:29:43

Post by: BrookM

http://www.pixeltoys.com/games/

Coming soon to mobile and tablets, in Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade, players will take command of an Imperial Knight which is an armored war mech.

“The game signals a real step-change for Pixel Toys,” said Andy Wafer, co-founder of Pixel Toys. “We started Pixel Toys three years ago with a passion to use our console background to create high impact action titles for touch screen devices.

“Warhammer fans have never seen 40k’s futuristic troops, creatures and vehicles of war in combat like this before on touch screen platforms. We’ve recreated the 40k universe in intricate detail, authentically modelling each individual component and bringing it to life on a grand scale – fighting in close-up combat, complete with dramatic environmental destruction coupled with mobile-appropriate gameplay and a control system.”

As players control their Imperial Knight through the 40+ mission campaign, they will come across other dynamically-created Patrol missions.

Players will be able to customize and upgrade their mech through the crafting system using loot picked up in the game. As the game progresses, more upgrades will be made available.

Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade is due to launch for mobile and tablet devices this autumn.

It's going to be an on the rails affair, so you probably tap what needs to explode or be cut to pieces.

I want this one, the animations alone look amazing.

If I had to guess? On the rails movements, weapon icons with auto-target and cool downs, lots of tapping when the 'cinematic' bosses show up.

I have to agree. It looks great, but finding out it's a mobile game really kills it. I'm not really a mobile game person. If this came out on Steam I'd love to give it a try, but I know how limited mobile games tend to be.

What SRM said, the Knight animations are pretty darn good but on a mobile device there is literally only so much they can do :(

Brass Scorpion fight could be fun though.

Its a pity it hasnt gone full blown - you could have a really good game with customisations, weapon loadouts, huge battlefields, support options, suped up GFX and what not.

The game does offer customisation and weapon loadouts, including at least two types of Reaper, the standard and the chainfist variant normally mounted on the Acheron are both in the trailer.

Yeah, just imagine that for a moment. You in a faction-dependant superheavy walker, right in the middle of a raging battle. Infantry barely able to scratch your paint, tanks being blown up left and right, fighting other players' walkers while defending other superheavies (baneblade anyone?) or stuff like that. Damn, that's a game worth doing right there. Instead we get mobile snotcode.

https://warhammer.totalwar.com/ has much potential.

Armageddon wasn't terrible, but the later scenarios took longer to play out than real 40k; I finally gave up, because the turns were too long for a TBS, and on the jacked up difficulty settings all I was doing was reloading scenarios to do things differently. I also couldn't figure out why Blood Angels were all just suckier Ultramarines that were red. And then I thought of 40k. I guess they got that part right!

Deathwatch, Warhammer quest and Spacehulk have all be very good, high quality games. GW have, IMO, been making some top quality mobile and tablet games. They have made some junk as well, but the good stuff has been very good. I'm afraid though that mobile gaming is the mass market now. Top PC and console games cost millions, and mobile games are now mainstream and "proper" games. PC gaming is on the way out for all but the hardcore few, console gaming will follow in a few years IMO as those of us who grew up with them have kids and things like that that stop us pouring $$$ and hours in to it. I have already seen many of my friends, who were hardcore gamers, drop it. I don't know anyone with an XBone or a PS4 as they have other priorities, but they all play mobile games.

Creative Assembly + SEGA = NOPE!

Sure, the game will be good eventually, and I love the structure they're doing with different games having sets of races, and how you can play against races that you don't have if someone owns one of the other games, kinda like how Dawn of War did it, but don't fool yourself Talys. This is a Creative Assembly game. It will be crippled on arrival, and be full of so many bugs (and LIES!) that it just won't be worth the DVD its printed on when it first comes out. Then SEGA will get involved and put a nice bunch'a disc-locked DLC and pre-order bull gak to go with it.

Again, one day it will be good. Maybe 6-12 months after release, during a Steam sale, with all the DLC bundled in, but do not forget history.

To be fair I own the game but have not yet played it. Friend of mine says it's pretty good, but it's still a minor game from a developer no one's heard of. I'm talking about real games - like the Dawn of War games, like Space Marine, that sort'a thing. And I didn't even like Space Marine, but it was a major release.

This is an on-rails bit of mobile tat that is the gaming equivalent of empty calories.

I'm just hoping that Regicide doesn't let us down...

 Steve steveson wrote:

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. GW haven't been making anything except trips to the bank with the money they get for farming out their IP to every two-bit mobile producer out there. They do not make these games, someone else makes them and someone else publishes them.

Please do your research before blurting such nonsense.

And those are literally the first ones I could find with a basic one-page Google search. There are other more recent ones that I know that have appeared at Gamespot and IGN in recent months. PC gaming isn't dead, and isn't dying.

It seems that mobile games are replacing MMOs as the latest video gaming cash cow. Now I can't fault GW, as a business, for wanting to milk said cash cow, but it's disappointing to see a sucession of conceptually promising GW IP titles fail to reach their full potential because they are primarily being developed for a sub-optimal platform.

My thoughts on Fireblade. Ther trailer looks good but has too much polish. You could eat your dinner off those imperial streets. Needs more grime for grimdark.

My very thoughts. SEGA's policies is actually losing money for Creative Assembly. Angry Joe's critique of Rome 2 hit sales very hard, and I am not convinced the lessons have been learned.

In my mind a Creative Assembly 'release date is one calender year after the official release date. ITime for the bs to subside and for the DLC 'whoring' to be amalgamated into a single package. And if it doesnt settle I dont buy. Shogun 2 may yet be my last Total War purchase.

The game was patched, and that patch could not be reversed. It made the game unplayable on harder difficulty levels and ruined it. Larger greenskin infantry units had to be completely annihilated for victory because grots are fearless apparently. The IG units you had simply didnt have the firepower to annihilate them so you had to use multiple units to perform one kill, which didnt work, or rely on large volume attritional units which died as quickly as the greenskins and you could not replace.
The game was balanced an playable pre patch ironically enough, and the developers have since completely ignored any call to make the patch user reversible.

I dont have any problem with GW doing that, the effortless profuit can be used to support the company. However because its free money GW core management have patted themselves on the back for their greater productivity and called for bonuses rather than invest.

I am one of millions who has a gaming PC and no console of any kind. I am aklso buying games and updating tech, always via PC.
Besides Chris Roberts is on the case, and he promises content level consoles cannot achieve. I wonder if he will match his lofty goal. There is certainly more room in a PC for a broader game than a console. Tghe only advantage console has is standardisation.

From what a trusted reviewer and big Warhammer fan has said, Warhammer Quest was not a very good, high quality game. Mordheim might be, but Warhammer Quest was a rather lacklustre port and not a game that took advantage of the strengths of a computer handling all the background calculations.

I think they'll let their IP out to anyone at this stage. We need a dev and publisher combo willing to take it to the next level. Shame that Space Marine didn't do all that well, I guess.

I thought Armageddon was *okay*. My idea of TBS greats are X-Com, Panzer General and Civilization, games that each captivated me for years and had nearly infinite replayability. For a TBS to be great, it needs to have excellent controls, which Armageddon never quite had. It was easy to make a mistake, in the sense of "NO, I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THAT YOU STUPID !@#!!@#!!!", with the only option being to reload and lose 30 minutes.

The latest X-Com was actually terrific, I thought, and a squad-based version of that (engine) set in the 40k universe would rock.

There is another TBS that I played on my Nintendo DS that I really loved, but the name of the game escapes me. It was very simple, square tiles, Fantasy RPGish, and decidedly Japanese. There was nothing spectacular about it, but it was really, really fun, and I wanted to play it through.

Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics I'd guess.

Also I would sell my soul for a Necromunda game in the XCOM engine but it'll never happen.

YES!!!! Fire Emblem. That silly game was so fun. FF:T was ok, but much more repetitive, IMO, and lacked some of the "fun factor".

And also yes, Necromunda in XCOM engines... well, let's just say, nobody would see me for a year

There was another game.. too: "The Great Big Little War Game", that I really enjoyed.

http://rubicondev.com/gbwg/

The engine wouldn't really fit 40k, but it might be ok for Age of Sigmar.

The next XCOM game is supposed to have proper modding support, so it's possible that a total conversion mod could work.

Failing that, as already mentioned, a full Necromunda game using that engine, with your base being the 'territories' you have, and you face different gangs (even persistent gangs!). That would be amazing.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only shovelware.

I doubt we'll see any very good games come out with the GW IP, because throwing crap at fanboys who will shutup and give them their money (as long as you license the right IP) works so much better for making money.

GW of course gets those wonderful license fees, and then can pull out the old "OH NO! We thought they would do wonderful! We're as shocked as you are, honestly!"

Failing that, as already mentioned, a full Necromunda game using that engine, with your base being the 'territories' you have, and you face different gangs (even persistent gangs!). That would be amazing.

I actually think that a table top game like this would be even better

such a shame that GW don't support any of these games anymore :(

The advantage of making it a videogame is that a computer can handle all of the background stuff easier and faster than hand calculation can. It's also a lot easier to have a Hive's worth of terrain as a procedurally generated virtual map than building, storing and using it in real life.

Yup. If this was PC I would be completely willing to try it. But not on the crap interface of a mobile platform. It will be a very strict on rails game just as everyone has predicted.

It's not the interface or the graphics that bothers me. I actually think the graphics are really neat.

The pace of the game is just too slow for an isometric view action RPG. Diablo 3 is the standard for such games; if you can't maintain that sort of quick, arcade-like pace, everything just feels painful.

Also, there are invariably parts of the game where you have to run through maze with nothing to kill (possibly because you killed everything in one branch, and must backtrack; if the game is well-designed, possibly because you have to figure out a puzzle). This is just not fun if you feel like your toon is running in slo-mo.

This game seems to have no sense of scale. The environments just so happen to be large enough for Knight-sized entities to run through, and there is no human-sized anything to indicate that these Knights, Stompas, and Heldrakes are the large hulking monstrosities they are.

For all we know, the "Knight" is actually a 8in tall toy that's running through a labyrinth.

And then you fight 1 Wraith Knight and get 1 shotted...and then rage quit.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/660235.page

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/660305.page

Str D strips d3 hp on 2s-5s. On a 6s it strips d6+6hp which one shots a IK.

The WK cost significantly less than an IK and when armed with the glaive and shield, it swings at a higher initiative delivering many Str D hits before the IK can swing back. On top of that an WK is gargantuan so it can't be stomped and gets fnp to the to any thing Str 10 or below. That means it gets fnp to the str 10 HoW hits by charging IK.

What this means is that a Wraith Knight should be a boss battle in which it Jumps around and runs quick. It lashes out with a glaive 5 hit combo you must parry all of which would destroy you and you have to dodge the on coming fire of scat lasers and wraith cannons. The Wraith Knight is taller, has better reach, and faster for an epic boss fight.

Well, I don't really have an issue with the game having a different power scale than 40k. Like, if Knights or w/e are more or less powerful, that doesn't bother me.

The gameplay just has to be really great -- that's more important to me than being true to 40k's mechanics or relative unit strengths.

Speaking as a company of heroes 2 veteran (veteran in the original sense, as in someone who was injured in the process), your hopes are far too high, HBMC. The game will be merely somwhat playably ballanced after one year. Any major content additions (new armies or even just single units added to the game) will absolutely reliably mess up said ballance for another 6 months minimum. Bugs, disconnects and crashes will be you friends and companions for at least two years and a flood of DLC that even at 75% discount is still too expensive is a given. Some of that pay-me-extra-DLC will be campaign units that were allready in the game at release. There will be no all-in-bundles. Sega is as much of a red flag as anyone can wish for.

I just saw that too. As soon as the guy introduced it I was thinking " huh, sounds cool." then a few moments passed and a lightbulb moment occurred and I switched to my school boy brain and got excited over my favourite thing being on TV.

It's so strange to see the Warhammer brand on TV and in mainstream media because of its personal nature and background.

Awesome stuff.

Being featured at an Apple event may radically change this hobby forever.

It's known as "The Apple effect" and it's been proven time and time again. Those most commonly effected are musicians. A fair amount of artists who were completely unknown had their music featured on an Apple ad and suddenly their career rocketed into orbit. Starving artists, rags to riches... literally and all because of Apple.

Speaking of Warhammer video games, the new Warhammer: Vermintide is sweet.

I've been a huge total war fan since the original Rome, and was thoroughly saddened with their new business stance in Rome 2. Pre-order factions / pay gating factions, day 1 dlc and the whole 9 yards. It's ridiculous and I hope they will stop it and go back to their old method of Game + expansion ONLY before they release their Warhammer game.

I played the game over my lunch hour. The game is fun, there have definately been worse attempts put out by them. It has the standard microtransaction "pushes" to pay for the good stuff/bonuses, but I could see playing this as a diversion for 15-30 minutes at a time and not having to bother with that junk.

I think things like the transfer sheet, the boardgames, return of the specialist wing and such as the fetal steps of GW realizing that need to start engaging their customers once again, in a positive fashion. Hope they just don't shoot the baby dead the first time it stumbles a bit.

The game is made in a pretty clever way - Apple will be/has been using it to demonstrate the 'power' of iPhone 6s because it uses a lot of options the new iPhone gives developers (technologically, I assume), as well as being one of the few games so far to use their new "3D Touch" thingy.

Yes! If you complete all of the missions, you have the chance to get a Lightning Cannon, just as you had the chance to get a the Gauntlet. And for the record, the Gauntlet is awesome.

With the melee combat, you get a translucent part of the bar and solid, bright green portion in the dead centre, which represents a critical hit. The Gauntlet changes the entire hit box into critical territory. In other words, same chance to hit, but higher damage and guarenteed critical hit with slow motion badassery.

Honestly, having played a few rounds of multiplayer, its interesting but flawed. There are numerous neutral enemies you have to destroy to build up a meter and whoever gets the biggest bar gets to charge first. First charge is like a joust, very quick and small hitbox, prone to lag. Then another 2 rounds of jousting, similarly, then a stand and fight, which is again, small hitbox and laggy, easy to get screwed over. It seems to be all about the melee here. You can shoot the opponent and do a little damage, but your carapace weapon is automated and targets the Orks/Chaos first, your Stubber does little, your meltagun not much better, the Gatling Cannon does nothing to armour. The Thermal Cannon does damage but not a whole lot, and shooting at the Knight means you get hit with the charge, which does more damage that shooting.

All in all, decent idea but poorly implemented. Also, its just another currency system to grind and farm, to buy "Flaming" weapons which are weaker than anything you already have if you've played for more than a month like myself.

Just gotta beat the big guy in the 2nd to last mission and get lucky on the RNG. I've gotten 2 Gauntlets from him.

A while ago they ran a contest where you could have your ingame Knight turned into an actual model, here's the winner:

The guys from Pixel Heroes (the team behind the Freeblade game) asked players to send in pictures of their Imperial Knights from the game.

Our Hobby Team picked their favourite, and painted a real-life version of it.

Behold, the mighty "Bastion":
