Gah, a 1 hour sale in the wee hours of a holiday? Whats the point besides disappointing people?

To be fair most Black Friday deals are 20% off or less and the 20% is going on the whole day. Now for those on the East coast and those that want to get up really early on the west coast there is an added bonus. For me though I'll just happen to be getting home around 3AM after shopping the 12AM Black Friday sales.... ok maybe closer to 2AM since there isn't a lot that I'm going after, but there is probably about an hour just waiting in line.

Glad it works for you. I think it is a pretty pointless promotion.
Also, Black Friday sales are usually 20%? That is the standard web discount most sites use for everyday merchandise. BF sales are often more than that. So, yeah, pointless.

DarkTraveler777 wrote:Also, Black Friday sales are usually 20%? That is the standard web discount most sites use for everyday merchandise. BF sales are often more than that. So, yeah, pointless.
However I was not talking about online stores. I was referring to regular retail stores and even my local game store since online warehouses are normally discounted. Compared to the usual though they are on par for holiday sales, minus door stoppers or clearance items they are trying to jump. Not to mention Underground Lasers isn't a online discount store nor is it Battlefoam.
Yes you are correct that 10-20% is normal for online discount stores like WarStore and MM. They tend to offer an additional 5-8% because their prices are already discounted for holiday sales. They don't offer an additional 20% off, except on extra stock they are really clearing the shelves for. Those tend to be on specific pieces, much like door stoppers that need to be grabbed or missed.
20% is still better and greater than 0. 5% off of normal 20% off wholesale prices is still only 5% greater than normal. If 20% is considered a pointless promotion, that means the others are also pointless? These are not 2015, these are from 2014 Black Friday (Spoiler taged to not cause confusion with current deals) I am sorry but we'll have to agree to disagree.
I am kind of bummed to not really get much notice of other Black Friday sales though, it appears this year might end up being lighter than usual. Even retail-wise a lot of the Black Friday deals are hit and miss, there isn't a lot that I would be waiting at midnight for compared to other years. Online at the usual places seems light as well. MM hasn't updated their black Friday page from last year and I can't tell if WarStore Black Friday page is from last year message or this year.

Awesome, so we are talking about different things. I was referring to web retailers since this thread is presumably aimed at web retailers ( I doubt most people on this forum care about local B&M store sales).
Dark Severance wrote:Not to mention Underground Lasers isn't a online discount store nor is it Battlefoam.
I think you mistook my short hand for Black Friday ( BF) for Battlefoam. My apologies, but I had not intention of bringing Battlefoam into this conversation.
Dark Severance wrote:20% is still better and greater than 0. 5% off of normal 20% off wholesale prices is still only 5% greater than normal. If 20% is considered a pointless promotion, that means the others are also pointless?
I am sorry but we'll have to agree to disagree.
Yeah, actually. I find most BF sales of 20% or less pointless. BF sales are supposed to draw traffic to a retailer through massive savings. If I can normally score a similar sale price throughout the year I am less inclined to spend money on a BF sale with a "regular" discount price.
But the pointless comment also refers to the 1-hour 50% sale that Underground Lasers is offering at a time when most people won't be awake or shopping for laser cut terrain.
If Underground Lasers wanted to boost their name and get more customers to try their products why wouldn't they run their sale longer than an hour? To me, it seems rather pointless. Laser cut MDF terrain is not unique or hard to find, so I remain skeptical that 20% off is going to be a gangbusters event for the company. All in all it seems rather pointless to me.
Anyway, since this thread is just you and me griping to one another I'll leave things here. Let's agree to disagree on the merit of UL's sale.

I'd be willing to wake up early to save 50% on good terrain.
Whatever you think a "good" sale to be is fine, but I know that I look at sales in terms of a price drop. Whether directly from a manufacturer, or a price drop from a store that only does full retail, a sale is a sale if the product is cheaper than normal.

Unsure why you're so upset that a manufacturer direct website like Underground Lasers whose products are not traditionally available from online discounters, or at discount in general, are offering a 20% off sale...

50% off of MDF terrain isn't so hot when you factor in the shipping. MDF is heavy, and thus expensive to ship. Unless they are charging outrageous prices to hide the shipping, then the shipping cost is likely around half of the MSRP.
And "cheaper than normal" describes all those Halloween sales that failed to bring the cash for many online retailers. "Cheaper than normal" is pretty useless until it becomes "I'd be a fool not to buy." Shipping being what it is, many customers would like to wait until they can make one huge order at the best prices possible, which leaves "cheaper than normal" cold and alone.
For example, why would I buy some DUST tanks at about 40% off today when there is quite a high chance of scoring some at 70 or 80% off on the same day I can score Halo and GoA at "cheaper than normal" pricing, and only pay shipping once?

Of the online deep discount sales I've participated in, most of the "good stuff" was gone in 15 minutes. Some items on sale only had one or two copies.
Haven't done a brick and mortar BF sale in a long time, but I'd also rather have a 1 hour sale than camp out 30 hours before the store opens.

Shipping in this particular case is "Free shipping for orders of 25 dollars or more in the US."
ced1106 wrote:Of the online deep discount sales I've participated in, most of the "good stuff" was gone in 15 minutes. Some items on sale only had one or two copies.
Yeah there were quite a few things I missed out last Black Friday because of this. Many items were just gone fairly quickly.
I think we all can agree that everyone will determine the value of something differently. We all have our own methods and things to determine if something is considered a good deal or not. The point of topics like this isn't really to discuss if something is a good deal but to alert everyone, then let everyone make their own determination on their own. To quite a few people 10-20% is quite a bit, while others look for 30-40%. What is considered a good deal is a subjective based on individual, environment, country, where they shop, etc.
This Black Friday is looking light though. Haven't see a lot of the 'normal' announcements that we would normally see already. Maybe some will start to show up towards the end of the week but usually we've had a larger list by now.

Is Miniature Market going to actually be prepared for it this year?
Didn't they release a price sheet prior to the actual launching before?
Black Friday is going to be tough for me this year being in Japan and on a wireless network that the inlaws have no interest in upgrading since they are rarely online.

I am not sure. They haven't updated their Black Friday page, it is still the same one from last year. It has been pretty quite on the website front of things. I seem to remember the information out sooner than the week before Thanksgiving so it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

Architects of War jumped the gun and has been offering 30% off all Gripping Beast and now 50% off Fanticide and Uncivil War.
The Fanticide rulebook is definitely worth 17.50 and it includes the spell cards. As a casual observer then, let me point out to you that your amount of posts about it would typically indicate someone who either gives a feth, or was trolling.
This may not be the case, as you've since pointed out that you don't indeed give a feth, but I just wanted to let you know why there is some confusion, about how much of a feth you do give about.
That said, Underground Laser's stuff is good, and 50% for an hour is much better than freezing my tootsies off standing outside in a line, or there only being a limited amount of stock available.
Just so there is no confusion on the matter, I apparently do indeed give a feth about the 50% sale at Underground Lasers

Add another post to your list, then. I had a back and forth with Dark Severance and responded to Judgedoug who incorrectly gauged my emotional involvement in this thread. And now you, who is doing the same thing as JD.
I really don't care about the MDF sale, but I do care about being misrepresented on here. I think a 1-hour sale is stupid, especially when it requires 2/3rds of the country to wake up extremely early to take advantage of it. Add in a company that is pretty much unheard of, and likely won't gain much attention from the sale, and it seemed a pointless promotion to me.
But oh, lordy! What a mistake it was to voice that opinion!
Anyway, I don't give a feth about this MDF sale. I am not participating in it, but that isn't stopping you or anyone else from taking advantage of it. So who is the troll here? Me? Who voiced an opinion, was called on it, defended it, and dropped the topic, or you who is sniping at me for... what reason exactly?

I think their idea of a one hour sale is a good one for a small company. He can limit the amount of time he has to use by the phone so he can gauge how much he is going to spend himself later . But if he ran that price all day he would get a lot more business, perhaps too much to fulfill in a short amount of time, or take too much of a loss in profit. So it's a good way to get folks who have been on the edge about buying and still limit the give away. Even Walmart did hour long sales on BF, at least by us.

I'm excited too! Their models are excellent and the resin are far superior than Finecast, my only complaint is a couple of resin models I bought came with mould lines in weird places which takes a little bit more work to prep before painting but the quality of the models makes it worth it. I experienced this with only a couple out of like 10 resin models though. Plastic models are excellent.
The Black Friday sale is awesome too, the discounts are pretty close to what retailers get them for and I plan on picking up quite a few stuff! Automatically Appended Next Post:

Yes, it's called managing growth. Running a 50% off sale for 24 hours would mean, for a small business, the inability to deliver orders anywhere near on time. And at fifty percent off, the margins are slim to none- that would, in effect, cause a small business to effectively lose money in order to deliver a product very late, which is the exact opposite of what a small business needs to do. However, a one hour window, is a window for people who already are planning and intend to get the discount, and therefore will be the most vocal when it comes to posting about their experience and satisfaction. Just got to figure out what time it'll be in Japan when the sale starts. I might actually be home and awake at that time!

Same here. I went to browse their site - while I don't think I necessarily need any of their products, at least they're in my mind now. In the future, should I need mdf terrain, at least I'll have heard of them.

Took a peek at FFG. They have some Dust stuff that I have absolutely no use for like their IS-3 equivalent but I want that tank. At $9, it's very, very tempting. Underground Lasers PS it was going to be way worse, I was going to set it to 3AM smile emoticon wife told me to cut it out
After all, Black Friday's supposed to be about either getting up early or staying up late for the bargains, isn't it? People getting soft with all these weekend long sales and sales starting during the daylight hours.

There's actually some good stuff in there, but I pretty much have or don't really NEED it. Halo for $75, USAriadna Army box for $50; $32 for any of the MERCS starters; good stuff there. I might place an order later in the week for some dribs and drabs (if Armada wave 2 actually goes In Stock).

I picked up some extra Deadzone / Dreadball stuff I'd been wanting for conversion purposes but didn't want to pay the normal discount price for. Got some Enforcer Peacekeepers for $15.00 and made Free shipping with my total order, meaning I got a better deal for them (unbundled) than I would have by buying them through Mantic's Warpath PM.
The best deals I've seen at Miniature Market's current sale are for the Mantic Deadzone and Mars Attacks battlezones. If you need any (I don't), I'd say now's the time to pick them up.

I picked up a few Malifaux items, but they didn't have a lot I wanted on sale. However, with the other Malifaux stuff I wanted, it made it worthwhile to order from them rather than locally, so it's fine.

Whew glad I grabbed all my Peacekeepers at $10 for five through the Deadzone KS.
It took four of us to get enough from mini market's sale to get over $100 for free shipping. I got some dice and Dreadball Azure Forest, my buddies got a buncha Bolt Action, Nameless team + booster, and Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective reprint (one of the best games ever btw, if anyone loves a good mystery, it's like 70% off!)

Those were the days! Truthfully I never needed many Peacekeepers, which is why I didn't bite back then, but now I'd like to have 5 just to play around with and convert.
I also got another Plague starter for $21, which I never thought I'd want more of at any price. I still think it's a flawed kit - most of the models in it could have been great but miss due to posing or design problems. But it is extremely useful for conversions.

I had a budget for Malifaux, but was turned off by the way they decided to do their damn exclusives. Just let us pick already! I'm already paying more than from an online store, they are getting a higher cut since it's a direct sale, and they cant be bothered to let us choose which figure we get at $150?
So WWX is getting most of that instead. Looking to add a few vehicles and the wave 2 hired hands. Maybe a bag as well... Quite good deals on those!

Check out the War Store's Black Friday. They carry it, and usually put out pretty good Black Friday deals.

In my experience War Store is generally quite lackluster on the black friday side of things, its like an extra 5% off sitewide, which for the most part translates to product being almost the same price as it is on miniature market or cool stuff inc or any of the other various better discount sites year round.

Miniature Market sold out of everything I was interested in before the email even came through this afternoon. Sigh.
I'm a decent sale away from getting big into Malifaux, too. When MM had their "additional 15% off" Infinity sale a few months ago, I bought a shedload. If they did something similar for Malifaux I'd be all over it.

I've got a sprue of peacekeepers I'll sell to you at a good price. I'm writing a pm in another tab, but if I forget to mention them, just remind me. They might be missing some shields, though. Are you ok with that?

I was a bit bummed about the lack of Dystopian Wars as well. Would have picked up a bit more. I might have grabbed a few more Russian tanks. Can't remember.
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the War Store stuff.
Sucked it up and ordered a large Super Dungeon Explore lot. Paid less than half of what I sold my Kickstarter edition for, and ended up with more content as well. Cool Stuff's sale started, kinda sucked, but their actual prices weren't too shabby for SDE stuff.

Bossk, yeah, really not my favorite style. I get incentivizing the single characters, but would have highly preferred $150 being "pick 2". $300 is just very elitest feeling in a game that, outside of that, I've always praised as pretty easy to get in to at around $50-100 for a one crew well fleshed out or two starters (for options or a small vs. game)

Does anyone know what the deal is with Miniature Market? They have Halo Fleet Battles on blow-out sale at cost or less while Terminator Genisys is only slightly discounted (except for the resistance kit)--which is not how I would have guessed those franchises would compare. They keep buying Mantic stuff knowing they'll have to clear it out at better-than-KS prices. They aren't carrying Gates of Antares at all. Are they some kind of psychohistory precogs anticipating the market or just spinning a wheel of fortune? What's going on behind the scenes?

They have Gates of Antares, just not the new starter set & rulebook.
I also thought Terminator Genisys would be a giant splash in the discount bin in time for Christmas. May take a few months later.
Halo fleet battles probably didn't do as well as anticipated because it's not reflecting ground combat---just a thought.

Got a bit during the first day of the general MM sale. Any idea if they're going to do any more items or at least a price slash for the 'official' black friday day? If the battlezone stuff drops any further I might like a couple more sets, though if they do I'll probably be in a decently sized line to get them.

Same here. On top of all the Black Friday deals, I'm also regularly checking the Kingdom Death store for their Black Friday item(s). Missed out on the grab bag last year, don't want a repeat.
Really want to order the She Wolves but not sure if I should wait and hope for a cheaper sale at some point. Tips?

I got some emails that both Games Workshop and the Black Library are planning black Friday deals.
Anyone seen any place to get some of the new Tau stuff fairly cheap in the US? Really would like some, but funds are very limited this year.
Thanks,

I'm hoping MM cut some more prices, because why not? May grab some more Super Dungeon heroes and mini bosses as well as another battlezone.
Hopefully FRP adds even more stuff to their neverending cycle of stuff on clearance.

Kingdom Death's sale is on- all of the armor kits and resins are sold out, but you can still get naked promos and pinups sets, plus the main game.

I can tell you right now that it's ridiculously expensive to ship large amounts of foam. For many years, the major carriers charge either weight based, or "fake weight" called "dimensional weight" where the dimensions of the box are calculated and a fake weight created based on the size - and whichever is higher, the actual weight, or the fake weight, is what is charged. I write shipping software and one of my clients sends gallery wraps up to 4' wide - and while the box it's in may weigh a total of 4 or 5 lbs, they are charged for something like 30 lbs because the dimensions are over x number of feet.

For those living in Iowa: Mayhem Comics & Games has their Black Friday sale and clearance sale going on this weekend in-store. 20% off retail store wide including 40k models, 30% off 40k codices. Their entire game room is filled with clearance today. I saw some 40k on clearance (Blood Angels Battleforce, Space Wolves Battleforce, CSM Codex). I was amazed to see ALL Warhammer Fantasy boxes are on clearance 50-60% off. I saw 2 AOS box sets on clearance for $50.00/ea, but the rest of the AOS line is just 20% off. Saw a few LOTR/Hobbit boxes on clearance 50% off retail. 30k Betrayal at Calth for $90. Other clearance too (comics, board games, etc.). I think the 20%/30% sale goes all weekend on full retail price items, but obviously clearance is gone when it's gone. Details and some pics on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mayhemcomics/
(No, I don't work for them. Just sharing info.)

A shame they only have 10%. I didn't have the cash when they had their 20% Halloween sale. I was hoping to grab some stuff, but 10% isn't enough to bother with when there's so much out there right now.

And yet there are plenty of stores on the internet that aren't the actual manufacturer who manage to ship for free or for set amount ($5-$10). While I understand there may be some costs higher than what we see to ship I don't like the way Battlefoam handles shipping so I won't purchase from them.

Not that I've seen. MM used to carry their foam, but looks like they just carry some X-Wing foam trays now. I prefer their foam to the harder battlefoam personally as it's less harsh on metal spear shafts and such, but that didn't stop me from ordering 2 of the Merc Bag standard loadouts from BF today at 60% off.
From KR, orders over $110 ship for free, so you can get a cardboard double-case (up to 400 standard size minis) shipped for $119.99 over from the UK.

Because they're eating the shipping cost. Battlefoam's cart though is pretty intelligent and if you're placing a large order (for example, today) it's often better to jiggle around into separate orders to get separate shipments and pay less overall in shipping.

If you live near the west coast of the US and are willing to drive up to Vancouver, there's an outfit right by the airport that carries KR. Everything in the store (other than super-cheap red tag clearance) should be 25% off on Black Friday (weekend) and Boxing Day (weekend), and you have a crazy strong US Dollar (I think 1.33), making the actual price you pay in USD spectacular. Most of the CAD MSRPs are based on about 1.15-1.20%, so that's like an effective discount of 35% from USD MSRP.

BF was piss poor in the UK, I didn't spend a penny despite being ready with my credit card. Missed the Dark Sphere USAriadna deal and that was BF over really. Spending $100 gives you a 10% off coupon in-store, and they're always generous with little discounts. But Kings of War rulebooks have exploded. They are one of three FLGS in town, and the only one stocking KoW. It also helps that I ran a demo and that was well-attended (and I'm gonna start playing in store occasionally too to garner interest)

Brookhurst Hobbies' BF sale is over, but it looks like they just put a bunch of stuff on general clearance, such as DnD Attack Wing and Heroclix at around 40-50% off, and AT-43 at MM prices or less. The TacArms and STAR troops were a few dollars cheaper. They still have some Therians, UNA and Red Blok vehicles, as well as far too many Karmans.

I didn't find the shipping all that crazy. I ordered seven trays, and paid $20 in shipping. Since the trays I wanted were half off, the whole thing was about $90. I was bummed I missed the MERCS bags at twenty bucks per though.
If you're looking at the "regular" sale items at 25%, you still save a bit, but given how expensive it is, 10-15% off isn't a huge win.
