I must be the prized customer of Games Workshop because I am a sucker. All they have to do is throw the word "Legion" in front of something and I want it. I was really excited to paint my first "Legion" tactical squad even though it's the same as the other 100 or so squads I've already painted. That's called being a sucker gents.
Anyway, decided to finally do a Pre-Heresy army and chose Ultramarines. I'm trying to weather them in a manner to indicate heavy action, but I don't want them to look totally beat the hell up. I'm thinking they just entered the catacombs under Calth at the start of the Underworld War. I'm not really happy with the bases, I was going for a ruins look. I'll probably change it. I got a bunch of Forgeworld awesomeness and a couple copies of Betray at Calth. So here are some pics.....

Ustrello: I was thinking about those bases. Dragon Forge also has some cool ones but I kinda enjoy making them myself.
Nevelon: We will see how they pan out I dont think Ive painted blue marines before. I have a FW legion transfer sheet on the way, that should give them some pop.

Post by: 40kFSU
@paradigm- I'm using the ole sponge method with a mix of chaos black and rhinos hide. Followed by a very lite brush with iron breaker. I use a dry brush to dust them with Valello light Siena.
@evildrcheese- Thanks man, sorry about the neck!
@Theophony- Ha! Those crazy Word Bearers pulled out all the stops.
@Nevelon- sadly, it's just my computer and phone are smarter than I am.
@BrotherSRM- thanks man, I appreciate it
@usernamesareannoying- Nothing but the best in baked goods for the emperors finest. Unfortunately I'm gonna rebase in the future.
So the Contemptor is painted, just need to add the transfers. The FW legion sheet hasn't arrived yet so I'll put him aside till then. I'm gonna start on the jet bikes and built the Sicaran tank. This army is gonna be governed by the infallible Rule of Cool, I don't even have one of the HH books for an army list. I'll probably pick one up at some point but until then.........

If you need any help checking what's legal for a HH force and what's not, let me know and I'll make sure it's all workable. Some of their unit builds are a bit funny (for example, no Special Weapons in Tactical Squads, but you can then take all-Special squads).

Hah, awesome! I believe the painting legend that is Nerdfest09 did some Minos recently, possibly with a mini-tutorial/explanation in his blog. Might be worth a look. AzazelX also has some in the works in his thread, and Januine got some awesome muted metals on his last batch of Ad Mech (might be a little too gold for Minos, though). Plenty of inspiration out there!
Jetbike looks good.

Paradigm- ive checked out those guys and a lot of others. I have 2 problems. My preferred method is the brush, but the formula I like results in pooling on vehicles. Can't figure a way around that. The other problem is should I buy an airbrush. That would probably be best but is I'm gonna spend money, I would rather it be models. Oh well, first world problems.

What problems are you having with painting bronze vehicles and pooling?
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Hey Noodles, good to hear from you. As for the bronze and pooling, I am using the wrong technique for vehicles. A brush wash can't be the best way to go. Thing is that is the only way I can work out a flat bronze. Still experimenting with colors.
A small update with theSicaran and second jet bike....

nice job with the sicaran so far! Do you prime white or just lots of thinned layers of white? Because it is looking good so far
69494
Post by: OneManNoodles
Hmm, you could be trying to paint too much too quickly, I admit I had trouble with washes on large areas, my fix was to stop using them.
There are a few things you could try, look at some sort of flow aid or anything to lower the surface tension, you could also try a hair-dryer to accelerate the drying process. Maybe Doing one panel, or side or whatever, at a time as well, to limit the amount of pooling and you might be able to keep surfaces more horizontal.
Get some scraps of plasticard or whatever and try things out.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Ustrelo- i used a thin coat of grey followed by a bunch of thinned down pallid wych flesh for the white, or actually an off white.
Noodles- too much too quickly is usually how my projects go. I could probably paint a lot better if I could ever maintain army discipline. I hear your point though. I've tried your advice and even if the pooling is solved, streaks appear. I'm just gonna have to figure out something entirely different. I've been surfing YouTube for painting tips.
In the meantime, Sicaran finished.

Post by: Paradigm
That is an awesome piece of armour!
As for the Minos brass/bronze, one theory I've just had is to basecoat as normal, Sepia or Agrax wash applied all over but not in great quantity (more a glaze than a wash, you just want to tint the surface), then applied again directly into the recesses, then drybrush the original metallic colour over the top of the panels and edges. You'd need to experiment, that's just a shot in the dark, but it could give you a nice worn metal look.

That Sicaran looks lovely in the final photo. The white is very nice. I normally use a grey-white, but I think I will try your way with the pallid wych flesh on my next army. When you say it was thinned down, I assume you mean water, not white?

Great paint job on a nice mini!
Your color choices are starting to confuse me. In the first post of this thread, the sarge has a red/white plume/crest thing on his helm. Pretty normal there. Might just be my personal bias as a 3rd company guy, but red and white are natural accent colors for Ultras to me.
Then the black cape on the terminator. That’s something you don’t see every day. Looks good on him, but black is a rarity in UM paintjobs. It’s the accent color of the 5th battle company, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen it used. And this is 30k, so things can be different.
Then the chaplain here. Ok, black cape again. Rockin’ it in a menacing style, all’s good. But where did the green crest come from? I mean, it looks great, well executed, works for the mini. But I was expecting red and/or white to fit in with the rest of the army. Do you have plans on including more green? From a 40k POV it’s the 4th company’s color, and I’ve seen an army done with it. Not sure if it signifies something else in 30k.
Characters often march to their own beat, keeps them separate from the rank and file. Just curious with the though process that ended up green.
(Not to sound critical, just curious. I really like the guy, he just don’t seem to fit with the rest of the force)

Post by: 40kFSU
Ustrello- it does comes with the set. Kind of a beating, not enough transfers for 30 marines. Still a good sheet though.
Paradigm- I kinda like how the transfer sticks out. I do plan on doing something for the transfers. Especially on the Sicaran, the excess film really shows.
Nevelon- I was wondering if anyone would notice. The red and white will be squad leaders. All capes will be black, just cause I like black capes. The plumes on the character models will each be different. Kind of a color of their office. If I make another chapalin, he will be green, but no one else will have green. No specific reason why. Just figured what the hell.

Actually a question about the model for the champion (if you remember). Does the hand holding the sword have the hilt and pommel intact on it or is that gone to make a connecting point for the other hand? I am planning on a conversion involving that model and I want to know how big of a headache I will have in the future.

Theophony- Its a base of Army painter blue followed by Calgar Blue. Then dry brushed with Ethereal Blue, which I think is discontinued. The recesses are shaded with Nuln Oil. And its all brush. Although I may have to break down and get an airbrush for Minotaurs.
Paradigm and Cheese- Thanks gents, I plan to paint a Rhino after the Heavy Support Squad.
Azalle- The Missile Launchers are easy, I like easy, we are good friends. Its Skavenblight Dinge with a healthy wash of Nuln Oil. Followed by a dry brush of Longbeard Gray.
Angelos- The gold is Ironbreaker, which is silver. Its got a wash of Nuln Oil, followed by Agrax Earthshade, followed by Seraphim Sephia.

It reminds me of the old deodorant-based grav attack vehicle. In a nostalgic good way.

Thanks everyone! And yes, it's ok to like 30k Ultramarines. They seem like a legit bad ass legion. I'm hoping to get an army shot in the next couple days.
Thraxas, you were asking about the quality of the molds? They were perfect. Had to trim a little flash but all the pieces fit together with no problems.
Nerdfest, the highlight is Etherium Blue. Dry color from GW. I think it's discontinued but you can find it on eBay.
Speaking of eBay, I enjoy doing at least one eBay rescue in each of my armies. I didn't think I would have an opportunity with a 30k army, but then I found that pile of resin you see in the first picture. It's 5 MK 4 assault marines. I think. In the meantime, the second Heavy Support Squad is all done....

Looking good! Do Ultramarines have grey-armoured Destroyers or is that just a WIP before the blue? They do look really cool in grey, and it fits the fluff; Ultramarines probably wouldn't be proud to use such units, but equally, are pragmatic enough to recognise their tactical value, unlike the Legions that eschew them completely.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Thanks Cheese.
Paradigm, yes the Ultramarines use gray armor for the Destroyers. I believe they collected all of them into a single death star type chapter. In fact, I think I remember reading something about that chapter kicking some Word Bearer butt on Calth.

Post by: Master Azalle
FSU great work on the destroyers
And iirc the Destroyers chapter was seen as out casts as they were considered dishonorable, but still recognized for their effectiveness, and were mustering at Calth.
And then they went on to raise unholy hell. Turns out demon flesh and spacemarines done respond well to rad munitions
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
So, Destroyers are finished and I think the color scheme looks great. Also the first 5 seekers, a Rhino, and a Storm Eagle! I am so motivated to paint that thing. I am especially looking forward to using some of my transfers from the Legion sheet.

Well, so far I can confirm this model is a bit of a beating. I guess it's because of so many flat pieces. They bend easily. Kind of a surprise because tanks have been a breeze. Even the speeder and bikes all fit perfectly.

I’m going to agree to both those points.
I do like the first scheme better, but both it and it’s mirror twin work. And it’s good to be able to tell your rhinos apart.
But the blue dozer blades seem wrong.

Thanks for the input guy, ill be painting that doser blade first chance I get. The Moritat is finished and I am hugely disappointed. The model itself is one of the coolest GW has, in my opinion anyway. But he is definately 40k, does not match the 30k world at all. That's one of the things I like about the 30k world, less bling. Nevelon, yes it's the same trim. You called it, just looks different on the white.
Sgt Oddball, Ustrello, Theophony, Januine, Feindus, thanks for the kind words gents. I do plan to go back and throw some powder in this army to give it a little wear and tear. Maybe some blood splatter could also be arranged.
Speaking of arranging blood splatter, a choppy command squad is finished. I don't know if this squad is actually useful on the table top but it just seems like a necessity for a Legion. Plus I got to use one of those sweet FW banners.

Excellent Command Squad and the Apothecary is also awesome! The one thing that's bugging me, though, is the power swords, they just look a little too similar to the armour for me... No need to do anything fancy, but maybe just add some lightning or edge them in white or something?

Them power swords is made of the same armor the dudes wear. I mean its power armor, but that is kinda a stretch for a sword

After that possibly 2 Drop Pods. For me assembling and painting Pods is like having an all access pass to a carnival of torment, but I think the army needs them. That storm eagle is really come together, but that canopy needs some work. The flat purple is a good start, but a highlight or something, and maybe some streaks on it to make a glare would really sell it. At the current color it does a good job of holding place, but is definitely pulling away from the model.
My approach would be to put a dark purple line at the bottom of both the primary bottom glass and at the angled bend. For the sides, just a long the frame is fine. Then I would put a bright pink layer at the top of the glass, just below the top of the frame, and angles. And then gloss it for the full purple visor look.
Do this, but in purple basically is what i am saying.

Post by: 40kFSU
The Vindicators and Rhinos I got off eBay already assembled. The Storm Eagle off eBay not assembled. The thing about FW and eBay is you gotta be careful not to end up with some recast. These were lucky finds because they are authentic and already, well built. Thing is, if you find authentic already built and unpainted minis, you are gonna pay more than if you got them from FW. For example, I think a Rhino works out to about $50, I paid about $60 a piece. If I recall correctly. I got the Storm Eagle at market price, I think the guy was fed up with it.
All the other stuff is from FW. Probably overall safer and cheaper that way. Astonishingly.

I'll be honest, I despise ultras as they are GW's poster boys.
However, 30k shows them in a different light and makes them stand out through tactics and units.
Painting is solid though and I'll have to keep an eye on this blog.
For those saying about the shooty and hard hitting units, you do pay for them in 30k lol.
Those termies are on par with the tyrant siege terminators for points but stand out alot more because of the colours.
Although, I'm just jealous of cyclone termies as I don't get them :p

Thanks guys. I'm glad everyone seems to like them. On a side note, I'm beginning to seriously doubt the genius of this Gulliman person. Not only did he cut the legions into ridiculously small forces, but also basically disarmed them. Why do away with these guys and support squads and all that again? Oh well. Just a little nerd rage I guess.
In the meantime, transition from shooty marines to choppy marines. Locutarus Storm Squad is all done. I think they worked out pretty well. I couldn't find any examples or art of these guys to follow so I just went with the most elaborate power weapons I could find. Blood angels of course.
And Jackal, I agree. In 10,000 years Ultras went from hard nose Roman Legion marines to dork marines.

The gold shoulder pads are especially good, the Termies look devastating as well. Any army shots due as you have quite the UM collection already.

How did you do the gold shoulder pads? they look epic!

Another slew of kind comments! Thanks guys, I'm grateful so many of you are enjoying the thread. As for the gold, it's Iron Breaker followed by a liberal wash of Badab Black, Agrax Earthshade, and finally Seraphim Sephia. Not sure how I came across the color, it just kinda happened.
As advertised, the second Diemos Vindicator.

Agreeing with EDC - those sang guard pieces work really well! Those shoulder pads look incredible too. I'll have to try that out some time

Thanks gents. I'm glad the Blood Angel bits are well received. Sometimes it's hard for me to really appreciate a kit bash because I'm used to certain pieces belonging to certain armies. Like I said, glad y'all like them. In the meantime, 1st veteran tacticals are almost done. Used the gold squad markings to set them apart a little. They look nice but I don't have enough for a second squad. So I will have to cook up something else, possibly white shoulder pads.
Oh, and the dudes without arms are gonna both have missile launchers.

I was a little surprised to see the same white accent on both vindis. You mixed things up on the rhinos, was expecting the same here.
But I guess in 30k, they are not individual relics, storied veterans of countless battles, lovingly restored after each deployment. They are probably just two brother tanks, fresh from the forge world and part of the same squadron.
Everything is looking great. Keep up the good work!

Thanks gents, the end is near for this one. Only have a tank and about 17 more guys to paint. Speaking of the tank..
Nevlon- yeah I decided to paint them identically with the Predator in mind. I'm going to paint the turret white. Thinking the 3 together will look cooler, let the predator stand out. It totally makes sense in my head.
Now for the first Veteran Tactical Squad......

Blonde hair and the base make me think he's going surfing . Great job with this army, nice an cohesive, plus it's all at a high standard.

Good work making those two models so notably different! The Siege Breaker looks great! Any particular reason he's on the long base?

Post by: 40kFSU
Thanks guys. And you know what Theo, it does look like he is surfing.
He's just on a long base because I didnt put him on a proper round one. Im gonna removed all these guys and build the bases anyway so I figured its no harm. He will end up on a 40mm one.

That's an awesome conversion of the librarian. Great work.
Siege Breaker looks cool too, nice idea putting the shield bling on the belt rather than on the shoulderpad. Wish I had done that with mine.

Thanks Cheese. Got some plasma guys here. I think I'll do the coils in an orange color. That should look suitably hot and stand out. Don't think there is any orange anywhere else in the army. So all I got left infantry wise is the last Veteran Tactical Squad. Think I will equip them with meltas.

Always had a soft spot for the Deimos Preds. Arguably a better design on the lascannon sponsons than the plastic version! Loving your plasma gun toting marines

Yeah, definitely a lovely tank design. Look forward to seeing it painted up.

Angel, I totally agree with your take on the sponsons. The 40k version looks like it could be clipped off by a rather inovative Tankbusta with a pocket knife.
Speaking of Tankbustas, A little more painting WIP for Warboss Dakka.
Making the turret white kinda limited the transfers I could put on it. But overall I think the look will be cool with the Vindicators. I'm hoping. I'm also hoping to have this army wrapped up in the next 2 weeks. So, back to it!

Gotta say I didn't like the white dome on it by itself, but in the group shot it really makes it more cohesive to the army . That's probably where I keep messing up with my marines is I try to make each one look good (like a model warrior), but then as a whole they look disjointed.

Nice set of tanks there.
One question on the Predator - you've painted the muzzle-bit on the turret lascannon in white, but not the sponson ones - a touch more of your spot colour might be a good idea, without it being part of the main hull?
