Welcome to the 18th Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka! Each month, entrants use these challenges as motivation to get painting, push their skills, clear their backlogs and get feedback from the amazing P&M community here. Anyone is free to enter, whether this is your first model or your thousand and first!
This month, the theme is Death From The Skies. As ever, this is open to interpretation, so anything from a supersonic fighter jet to a warrior leaping down on an unsuspecting foe goes!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st August and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st August. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
I may throw my hat in for this one... might do the Knight-Legolas-Venator or maybe the 2 remaining Prosecutors I have. Hell, any Stormcast Eternal really. Since they literally come down from the heavens
I’d like to finish up this squad. The two painted guys were done sometime around early 3rd edition, and have been waiting for their fellows for quite a while now. Some of them have the start of their undersuits basecoated, but that I need to go over that anyway. And knowing me, I’ll just end finishing the exarch, who is just primed. Might end up touching up the old guys to match the new; they were done in my black wash everything phase.
righto, I'm in again ...think I'm going to paint up these dudes, 4 stormboyz and a converted stormnob...I've been wanting to for months now, but other stuff kept coming up...
...and after I've done those, I've got about another 25 to go! (most of them being the older ones with the metal torsos/rokkit packs too!)
Spoiler:
also, seriously?! how are those tiny 25mm bases supposed to be big enough for stormboyz?? - ordinary boyz barely squeeze onto them - these ones are in big dynamic poses, with honkin' great rokkit-packs!
I first didn t know if I got something in stock fitting the theme.
But as I see, jetbikes qualify as being deadly and somehow from the sky, so I ll try to go with this:
I don't have anything expressly flying, but I do have a commissar on a jetbike Rogue Trader figure... and Fulgrim who is very tall, leaping and coming off a point of rock.
Though my first choice to work on this month will be a strange little Daemon Prince conversion. Just waiting on delivery.

Are you going to put them on 32s then?
^the quote seems to be messing up a little there, oh well..anyway...
hmm, well, I don't have any around at the moment that aren't spoken for, so I'd have to order some...I guess I do have a month, so there's time for that...what's the general consensus regarding orks on 32mm bases though?...I thought it was basically just marines that are "approved" to be on 32" bases?
ZoBo: Officially, you can put them on any base you like within reason. Jump troops, in particular, benefit from 32s greatly and receive a greater amount of stability on the tabletop.
As much as I'd like to do my shiny new Barracuda, I think these guys will be more likely to get finished in the time I have available this month. Plus there was talk of a friendly competition with a few others doing the same models!

Your storm boys will definitely look better on 32's.

yeah...that is starting to sound like the way forward I think...and I probably won't even need to order them anyway actually, I have a couple of unbuilt "start collecting: nurgle daemons" boxes, and the plaguebearers in those come with 32mm's...so I think they'll be getting mugged
...also, clearly I was tired when I made that last post...32" bases might be a little unwieldy!
I'm in with, you guessed it, Edryc Setorax and Antor Delassio from Deathwatch: Overkill. That makes 4 or 5 of us doing the exact same models. Here's my proof pic:
Let's kick the tires and light the fires and paint us some Death from the Skies!
All built and ready to go. Gotta wait till the wee hours of the morning to prime them though due to this FETHEATING KOREAN HUMIDITY...... ahem..... Whether or not I'll have time to build a wee vignette to house the scene remains to be seen.
Perfect I just got work from the good folks at Raging Heroes, and I'll be getting my Santa Dolores, which will be the Demonhost of my Inquisition army, so that will be my entry for the month... I'll post a proof picture as soon as the figures get here...
uh, so guys...not making any actual solid plans here or anything yet, but still...just looking for some rough opinions...to gauge my sanity
....is a 34" wingspan (and a body to match), way too ridiculously big(!!!!), for an ork "blasta bommer" superheavy flier?...I'm thinking about going full BigMek on one of these...
too crazy?...or crazy enough?
(if I do decide to go in on this, no guarantees it'll be close to done for this month's challenge, but who knows...)

When it comes to orks, there is no such thing as too big, or too crazy.
And just because it will probably come up: No, that’s not enough Dakka.
I look forwards to seeing your Jetfighter.. I hope mine last month can serve as a little inspiration for you. I really look forwards to seeing how yours ends up regardless of if you finish in august or next July.
If you cut some fine strips of blister package plastic, you can coat them in Mays and layers of effect paint or acrylic varnish mixed with gore colour.
I did something similar to create a wave.
Although I don't know how I'm going to get used to having proper instructions from Forgeworld. Where's the fun in building it if you know where each random bit goes?
I'd heard FW have started giving proper instructions now - is that just with new kits or have they gone back and made proper instructions for the older kits too like for example on the warhound and reaver Titans?
Jadenim wrote: @Verviedi, it's such a nice kit, isn't it?!

I used over 50 magnets in putting it together. That was a complete bitch to build. Looks beautiful, though. I almost miss the instructions that look like they were photocopied 40 times.

No, just new designs.
FW God is not a merciful god.

Just checking over mine when it arrived, it does seem like they magnetised everything; weapons, undercarriage, heck it even looked like they put magnet holes in the back of the engine nozzles?!

Sadly I fethed up the magnets on the missile racks, so I'm stuck just keeping the covers on. I don't mind, they were quite ugly anyway.

Thanks for the support Ssisal, I am having some heavy RL stuff that keeps me from hobby. I hope my Nephilim turns out as good as your's
ZergSmasher wrote:Ooh, a Nephilim! Do a good job on it so I can be inspired to finish mine!
Again, not sure the quality will be up to measure, but I'll try.
This is progress so far. Base is at concept stage, but will look a bit like this (the proper proof is second)
I just ordered a Darkshroud to inspire me to finish the first one i have, that is about 3/4th finished.
Ill be submitting proofs once the kit gets here, along with the WIP shot of current one.. So i can keep them straight as ill be using the same paint scheme
I have an idea / suggestion for your base TP^DC Deputy Manager; could you have a fire in the building with a smoke column then hiding the rest of the stand?
Might be difficult to get right (don't know that I'd be up to it), but would look awesome if you did

Thanks Jadenim, means a lot. I hope I get past the build phase on this one!
I've looked at fire/smoke clouds before and I can't find a method that looks realistic enough for me or I can pull off well enough. That's why I've stuck so much building in - to detract away from the stand a little.
If I could trouble everyone for an opinion, my floors for the DAs are dark grey Tarmac/stone rubble. What colour for the building, bearing in mind the ship is black. All my armies fight on one world, the site of a Thokt Necron tomb which has lava regions and blue crystalline deposits depending on the force. The DAs are in the ruined Imperial outpost investigating. I ideally want the buildings to be black to continue the muted dead tones but with a black plane it's not gonna fly (badoom!). The stone used for construction on this world would be grey though, so red brick building isn't going to work fluff-wise. Thoughts?
I haven't quite worked mine out yet but here is some proof anyway
Good progress TP^DC, hope you get it finished
Do you want the building to sand out or blend in?
To stand out you could make it a sandstone colour (not sure thats fits with your fluff tho) to contrast the black/gray or if you are feeling brave look up Jans excellent marble tutorial
http://warpbound.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Marble
Spoiler:
If you want it to blend in a lighter (or darker) shade of gray is prob your only option.

any chance you've got some kind of spare wall light/lamp post/vehicle light/similar bitz sitting around that you could stick in there somewhere, and do some kind of coloured glow effect from it?...that could break up the black/dark grey a bit maybe, while letting you keep your standard scheme?
@MG - yup, that looks like the beginnings of a Mek project allright!
Hell Dorado Corvus Harriers. Checking Soda Pop Games' site, they appear to no longer be in print, sadly. I'd kinda like to pick some more up some time, make a nice harpy unit for my beastmen.
The most open ended proof ever, but I'm going to try build 1/6 (of the model, not actual) scale Space Marine Flyers, namely a Fire Raptor, Xiphon and Stormbird.
Looking good guyz.
I m not so happy with my entrance this month so I might change it or am out for this month. Got a lot of other stuff on mydesk and will be on vacation for a couple of days.
No real reason. I may eventually look into Epic, but I just think it'll be fun. Not to mention they'll sit on my desk next to my RoS Griffon like little mascots.
@MG - yup, that looks like the beginnings of a Mek project allright!
You are correct, I am in a moding mood atm.
Btw I took your advice and am using those rhinestones you linked on the last challenge since I planned to do a lot of riveting (can you have too much?), they seem to be working fine.
Progress so far, still waiting on a few bits to arrive to decide how to proceed further so thought I'd undercoat it.

nice..looking good so far ...hmm, I think I'm starting to see where you're going with this, I look forward to seeing more progress (specially considering I have about a dozen of those things sitting around in need of work, and I think I'm missing the rotors off at least 2 of them, so will probably need to do something creative )
...aye, those rhinestones work quite nicely don't they? I was actually kinda surprised how well they worked out when I tried them on my squiggoth...they're maybe a little bigger than I'd like for some applications, but specifically if you're doing something large and orky, and need a ton of rivets, man, on a speed and ease of use basis, they sure beat the heck out of slicing styrene rod or something in my opinion!
only a minor bit of conversion in my entry this month...4 stormboyz built straight from the box, plus a nob I've added a rokkit pack to, with a couple of extra little booster rokkits from the ork flier sprues, to make the nob's rokkit pack a bit more beefy...I've nearly got all the basecoats down on them, but they're not really worthy of a wip shot yet.
...think I'm kinda taking a break from conversion stuff for a bit, so I'm fresh and ready to go to town on the two and a half foot long toy plane I've just bought, and plan to turn into an ork 'eavy landa! (kinda old homebrew rules I think, but it sounds nice...it'll be mostly for display anyway though )
I'm falling behind the rest of the other guys in the Deathwatch Jumpers mini-challenge, but I have gotten started at least. Here's my latest WIP shot:
I'm gonna get more done tonight before bed, and possibly still more before work tomorrow if I can.
If you don't want to wait, I will say that vallejo polyurethane primer brushed on has worked really well for me, as long as its not put on so heavy that it keeps bubbles.
Vejut wrote: If you don't want to wait, I will say that vallejo polyurethane primer brushed on has worked really well for me, as long as its not put on so heavy that it keeps bubbles.
from personal experience, a word of caution here...I'm guessing I didn't shake the bottle enough or something at the time maybe, but I brush-primed 30 ork boyz with vallejo polyurethane primer a while back, and it went weird on me...trying to paint over it is like trying to paint over wax or something, the paint just beads up on itself, doesn't apply smoothly at all...it's quite annoying, even more so considering it's on 30 models! ...so yeah, shake thoroughly before use!!
(I assume that's the problem, as I've brush-primed a couple other things with t and it worked fine, and it always works fine when I put it through an airbrush...just that one time it went weird )
nice feltmonkey. love those figs. they should be sweet all painted up
Automatically Appended Next Post: Getting the 'lass done, onto the gold and that now. hopefully get him (mostly) finished today. ONly 8 days of hols left - so much to do - lol
We're 9 days in and I've got nothing to offer. Nothing that really fits the theme, and I don't think I'd have time to finish anyway. Besides, you're probably all sick of seeing my Stark Crusaders every month!
I'll try to be back in next month. Good luck everyone!
Okay so this has been sitting around for aegis so I suppose this contest could be the kick in the arse I need to do it....
Don't expect miracles as it'll probably just be done to my standard scheme but we'll see if I can do something a bit good.
Proof....
According to amazon My Vengeance/Shroud was delivered on Monday afternoon with the post. . Spoke with seller.
So i get to go into the post office and file a complaint. I didnt take it out of the mailbox, neither did my gf. none of the neighbors saw anything and one of them is older gent that sits out across the street all day watching the street construction.
good news is, seller will next day another to me once i get the claim number to them.
bad news is, cant trust someone in the neighborhood.. or one of the guys replacing the sewer line.
After failing to get a proof pic or finals submitted for last months comp, I will have to try harder this month, got hold of some jump packs so will have a go at trying to get a better pose out of my snapfit marines and start on one of my planned assault marine squads. Proof picks to follow a.s.a.p.

That sucks :(
I've had stuff stolen out of my mailbox, it's really just grrr. Not to mention a felony if someone's caught...
Good to see people making progress. All I've done so far is accidentally break both (both!) arms off one of my Scourges. So if your minis are in exactly the same state as when you took the proof photo, you're still ahead of me, as I'm going backwards.
Update: My hours make it difficult to get into a physical post office. But i made it in only to find out that the package from amazon was not insured so i could not file a claim with the post office. The clerk at the post office said to call amazon, they have an a-z replacement policy. Spoke to Amazon, after them looking at my account and seeing ive never filed a claim with thousands of dollars of purchase history amazon is trusting me that the package was stolen; and has asked the seller to replace the land speeder vengeance kit for me, and has promised to call me in exactly 24 hours time to let me know if the seller will replace it for me. IF the seller does not choose to replace it, amazon will for me. Ive never been more happy to have been a prime member for a few years now.
It sucks that the seller is eating the cost of the kit, but i did not get what i paid for so had to call and do what i can. Ive got some other things have ordered from the same seller, no issues with previous stuff, and a couple things i ordered non-prime from them cuz they were awesome before. I know that I am leaving long good seller feedback.
I'm actually struggling a bit with my stormboyz, I've still got one colour left to basecoat on the 5 of them, then there's all the highlighting, shading and detail work, then I want to whip up some smoketrail flight stand base decorations for them...eh, still a good 2 and a half weeks though, so I should be able to get 'em done...hopefully
there's actually quite a lot to paint on those dudes...there's the ork boy (basically), then the rokkit pack which is nearly as big, and detailed as an ork boy, and the extra techno-gubbinz on them...so it's closer to painting 10 models than 5 really...they are great-looking models though! I love 'em!
buttery nooo!...is it salvageable? ...darn shame...but your sub entry should work nicely too mate ...reminds me of this chap I painted a few months back
ehh, well anyway, since I had my camera out to take a pic of him^, here's a wip shot of my stormboyz so far...still a ways to go...
I'm making good progress, all of the basecoating is now done. Here's a not-great WIP shot:
Next thing to do is shade everything that needs shaded, and then do some highlights. Shouldn't be too hard, right?
@methebest - oooh man that sucks hope it's ok otherwise, it's look really good from your shot!
@midgetgems - here's hoping I can do them justice!! God I want a new model for those lol shame the metal one is $33US :( would really like it
@butter - :( sorry to hear that man, I really like your subbed entry tho!
@ZoBo - omg! LOL that's *awesome*!!
Guildenstern wrote: @methebest - oooh man that sucks hope it's ok otherwise, it's look really good from your shot!
Damage isn't that bad, its just that non brass line at then end, going to see if the superglue holds through the drybrushing, if it doesn't i'll leave it off and noone will realise its missing.
It survived now i just need to paint the purple inbetween the trim, going to be fun.
You'll do fine Guildenstern, A new kopta model would be cool, they used to go very cheap on ebay etc but recently they have been going for a lot more, makes me glad I stocked up on them for conversions like this one
My WIP from this weekend I hadn't fully committed to this idea since I wasn't sure it would all fit together (I knew I would be doing some sort of conversion to a plane but the number of wings was in question) but it looks like it will work. So an update to my entry as Baron Von RichthOrken (or Orkthofen?) a.k.a the Red Baron. His history if anyone is interest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_von_Richthofen
Almost done with the Hawks. Just need to put their packs on and figure out how to base them. The original though for my Eldar army was maiden world grass scheme. Need to see how the tufts I picked up work with my old flock. Tested out on an old scout.
Sometimes I forget how irritating some of the old metal models are. Undercuts filled in, etc. Plus as these guys demonstrate: balance issues. Perched like ballerinas on their toes, with big ol’ sets of wings on their backs. Basing was a fun exercise in finding the biggest rocks in my collection that would fit. I still want to cut some pennies in half to glue under the slotta base.
For those interested, I did some touch-up work on the two existing guys who I had painted decades ago. As the rules are 5 minis, plus needed to start mostly unpainted, they are not included in my entry. But here is the full squad of 6:
@ Midget Gems: wow we're in for a real treat this month,

@Nevelon: I agree, many people are nostalgic about them, but I must admit I love plastic models. Looking great, I've never seen them with metallic wings before but I really like them.

@methebest: Looking great, can't wait to see this one finished.
As I'm away at the end of this month and beginning of next I need to submit early. I must admit my motivation to paint is starting to wane a little (so many things to do outside in the summer) and I've not the patience I had a few months ago. Still I'll submit even if its not as good as I think I can do.
Sanguinary priest in the middle of some weapon blessing ceremony.
Finished up my ashen claws assault squad. This may be my last entry for a while since I am leaving for college and I may not have time to paint much, wanted to thank para for running this and for everyone entering good luck!
I got my hands on the Deathwatch box, and I just stared building the vanguard veterans, and I'm really liking those crazy heavy thunder hammers. Can I change my entry to a squad of vanguard veterans? I'd post a proof picture tomorrow as soon as I have the five of them built... (and yes, then I'll paint all five of them before the end of next week, I'm mad, I know... )
I used Jan's recipe for old metal (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/90/694730.page#8752723 really ought to check it out if you've not seen it, it's awesome). Really like the look of it. I had to sub Old Gold for the Gehenna's Gold, and I think I may have done a bit less runefang. The wash is still wet in the above. I'll take a look at it again in the morning, see how I want to proceed. I like the look so far. I'm probably going to be going over some parts with ork colours, leaving a good bit of metal. Anyway, wip.
Still issues with the vengeance kit from ebay. Got tired of waiting, picked up a kit at local store for retail.. I'm going to make a second shroud and finish the one I started last winter.
I'll turn the one I'm waiting on from amazon into a vengeance.
Thanks Moolet, it was Tamiya clear smoke paint. I bought a pot and brushed on, which was a mistake (too blotchy). Then found in the depths of my tools a rubbish airbrush and it seems to smooth it down a lot. In summary, buy the spray can version
The black lines need tidying, but were painted on the moulded lines on the inside as a Heads Up Display
Errrrrr...
Basecoated in the GW white
Painted in Ceramite White
Printed a decal of the sunrise
Laid decal on
Colour matched and blended from the sky up to tail, blue through to midnight purple (varying layers and wet blending of blue/purple/black mixes
Applied an irridescent nail polish to the fin and tail
Applied a thinned down layer of same nail polish to fade into the sky
Used various mixes of purple, blue, orange, black and green to touch up creases and marks on decals
That's about all so far.
Well, I'm afraid I have some bad news. My airbrush kicked the bucket! Thankfully I was only halfway through basecoating, so the flanker may return in a later challenge
Searching for a plan B now... got the Vanguard Vets from Death Masque, and some sanguinary guard bits lying around, so maybe I can throw something together with them.
Shame I just saw this. I just painted up a squad of old Swooping Hawks. Tsk tsk. Here are the pics though I needn't be added to the group since I didn't post this prior to paint:
@elbows - you just entered. As long as there is a proof of pre-painting and you painted them this month you are in. We're pretty lax other than that around here
That Eldar flying abomination is amazing! I think I have some iridescent medium somewhere to try that trick on some unfortunate victim.
And those winged fools are pretty good too.
As for me, after a week of summer torture in the coast I bring my owl. I may go back to it and tweak it, but seeing as we may be going somewhere else equally distant from my paintbrush... I'll play safe rather than sorry and post some pictures now.
FINISHED
I've spent all day painting the first of my five Scourges. I decided to do that rather than some kind of production line, because now I do at least have something to enter, even if it does just end up being the one miniature. I've only really got tomorrow and Monday to paint the rest, and I have no idea when I'll be able to photograph them. What's worse, my wife usually takes the photos, and any free evenings we have are going to be taken up with her playing the new Deus Ex game. She loves Deus Ex.
PossumCraft, that's a fantastic entry!
I'm curious, you described in your "recipe" (how to create this effect) that there's a decal involved. How much is that, where is it exactly?

The sunrise and water on the wings is a decal. From the engine blades (?) downward I've placed on a large decal I printed.
I'd leave him like that, sockwithaticket. Reminds me of a Dr Seuss book about a pair of haunted trousers.
I've been painting some more today, and two more Scourges now have highlighted armour. Two more need the armour painting, and then I'll have to get to work on the other bits of those four, the wings, the guns, the vials, the details, and the bases. Easy...
My garage/gaming room is in that bluelight whenever i do not have a brush in my hands. So im starting to use neons and glowindark paints so things show up in the blue light and dont just look like a darkish blob on the shelfs.
Still no base, but im going to try something for them to work "as is" for the bases.
The shroud that is in pieces, is the contest one. The shroud that is whole, is my old one/ one to try out colors to see how they look before i ruin the contest one
lol at Sock - amazing work though tbh, but it would be really funny to leave it half done
Kustomer D - yay!! more!!! although wouldn't you have wanted to do the pilot before assembling? well kinda, I realize it's 2 pieces... pita really if you ask me. I'm trying to get my pilot done and getting to the face is uber hard =/

I finished assambling the 2nd one, too.
The arms aren't glued on yet. So I can remove them for the painting.
@Kustomer D; I highly recommend you take a decent pick of the cockpit when it's done, before assembly, and include it as one of the finals; you're doing a fantastic job on all those screens, etc. which will never see the light of day otherwise!
You could have a theme to do with the Olympics since that's just finished and the Paras are about to start. e.g. Gold, Silver and Bronze or Winner! or competition
I think you must gets some points for managing to link your entry to Morecambe and Wise Jadenim , nice work.
That decal is very impressive PossumCraft, I didn't realise you could get ones that looked that good.
Moolet thats a very cool model you have created, really like the heat burn on the jump pack and the blade glowing where the blood has touched it.
Nice to see some more Swooping Hawks, and that Hellblade looks great methebest, think that's your best work to date.
Whoo another Deffkopte KD, good stuff, mine has sprouted wings
Regarding themes, I am struggling to come up with anything. I think previously mentioned "ground pounders" sounds good.
"Sharp" is an option - any model with some kind of knife/claw/sword/spear etc etc (or something with snazzy fashion sense of course).
"Xenos" - anything not a SM or IG/AM. It will be our 7th month and therefore in contrast to Space Marine which kicked off the year do "non Space Marine" for the second half
Jadenim, I'd been wondering what it was those miniatures were reminding me of as I was looking at the pictures! You absolutely nailed it - they're Morcombe and Wise!
I've put in a marathon painting session today. Apart from breaks for meals and to take the bins out, I've been painting from about 10am today, and I've just stopped, at 1am. I still have paint on my hands. The annoying thing is I still haven't finished. I couldn't be a pro painter - I'd be so slow I'd have to charge a week's wages per model! Not that I think I'm that standard anyway.
For next month's theme, allow me to cheekily suggest "Anything but Orks." Just to make half the regulars panic.
Smokin! Either literal with the fire, or more crass with the other type of hotness.
Take five. At rest, taking a break, sitting down. Etc.
Brace for Impact! Either someone getting ready to take a hit, or someone handing one out.
Ground Pounder sound good as a contrast to this month.
@feltmonkey: Let’s not try to exclude people directly. But “neat and tidy” “ship shape” or “orderly” might toss a spanner at our local Orks. Not that it will slow them down much, adaptive and innovative xenos that they are.
Not sure we haven't already had a similar theme, but one I can think of is Ambush Predator-any model that attacks swiftly and from seemingly out of nowhere (could be interpreted a number of ways).
Perhaps another good one could be Avatar of War-a model that exemplifies its faction's philosophy and methods.
Whoo another Deffkopte KD, good stuff, mine has sprouted wings.
I had my last 2 Koptaz laying in a box for a while and thought about what to do with them.
This months comp finelly made me put them together and at least start painting them.
The model is just so nice.
Hmm no Orks allowed next month = Orks are just everywhere!!!
Got no ideas for next month but as meant earlier we could throw in some 2nd places from the past months, maybe the highest rated 2nds out of the 18 comps that we took part?!
K D
PS: started painting last night, coming together nicely. Pics follow later.
What about something like 'Objective spotted' for a theme, anything from a commander calling the shots to a radio/comms grunt relaying the target, scouts in hiding with eyes on the prize or just an objective marker to spice up games.
Obviously, my Anything but Orks suggestion was a joke.
We do need to remember when making suggestions that not everyone just paints WH40K. There are always a bunch of suggestions that can only really relate to 40K. I like the idea of the theme just being a single word, which leaves things more open to interpretation. The more specific and prescriptive the theme, the less interesting it becomes.
I'll have a look at the earlier polls and try and put together a list of 'close but no cigar' entries that came second twice but never got their chance, then we'll vote on those, I think.
Although I do think Bottle's suggestion is a good one.....
PossumCraft wrote: Looking good! Love the weathering on the hazard plate over that front buzzsaw. Looks dead smokey
Is there a story behind the poor Necron whose face is mounted as a hood ornament?
Thanks man, the Necronface was just a leftover piece from a Necron-conversion and I thought it would fit the Kopta Maybe it was the first Necron who got ran over by him and the buzzsaw cut of the face.
Here it is... a damn nice Deffkopta, I think.
It´s really hard to point out all the little details on this modell with only 5 pics, but I think that´s an issue with a lot of models.
Hope you like it
deffkoptas are looking good guys ...making me wish I'd entered some now
...I'm still sruggling with my stormboyz...my motivation's been oddly low the past couple of weeks...I've still got a a fair bit of highlighting and weathering to work on before I can think about calling them done ...I will get them done though, darnit! - might just pull an all-nighter tonight and hopefully make a hefty dent
Well, I'm calling these guys done for the month. I present to you Edryc Setorax, formerly of the Raven Guard, and Antor Delassio, formerly of the Blood Angels, now serving with the Deathwatch of the Ordo Xenos:
I had a lot of fun painting these guys. They were quite a challenge with all that fiddly detail. I really need to work on doing more clean paintwork, as looking closely at the pics I can see way too many mistakes. Oh well, that's why I do these challenges, I learn to better myself as a painter. Looking forward to the voting, as there are (as usual) some pretty awesome models in here!
@TP^DC and Jadenim: Thanks for the kind words guys. I know I'm kinda my own worst critic. I really am working on painting small details better. As for the assault icons, they actually turned out easier than the other stuff. I kept having to retouch the Raven Guard symbol because I couldn't keep the paint where I wanted it (probably was tired from work, which sometimes makes my hands less steady).
Here are my final photos of my Dark Eldar Scourges. I went a bit mad a few weeks ago and basically bought, bit by bit, a full Dark Eldar/Harlequin 1000pt army. I intend to paint all the Dark Eldar in this scheme.
So, to throw more feathery blue things in, though not as good as feltmonkey's, my final pics on my Corvus Harriers:
Improvement suggestions welcome--I think to start with, I really needed to just extend the satin varnish over everything but the eye, and maybe go for matte on the feathers/body if I really wanted more finish contrast.
Looking good there DC. Might I ask how you got the dark tinted effect on the canopy? I'm going for a similar look on my flanker, and I'm not sure of the best method to do it.
Regarding the canopy, I didn't want it fully painted but also not clear. I remembered when my Dad and I built Tamiya remote control cars and used a special Tamiya paint to do the Windows. It's called Smoke (I forget the code sorry). It's s clear paint and needs a few costs to build up. I made the mistake of trying to brush it on and it started being splotchy. Either buy a spray can or use it in an airbrush for even coverage. Patience is needed though, I did about 6 coats (2 brushed on) and you HAVE to wait until each is dry before you put the next on

Ah ok. I ask because the model I bought didn't come with a pilot figure, and I won't be able to get one in time to finish the challenge! So an opaque canopy is necessary I'm afraid. Would a simple black wash on the inside of the canopy do the trick?
I'd paint the inside black, NOT the outside. It just looks odd in my opinion. The sheen from the clear plastic makes it look like glass then.
Out of interest, is there a cockpit in the model? I can't see from the photos you've sent. If there is it's a bit poor not to provide a pilot. If there's not, have you found a way to ensure it doesn't look like you've just shoved a man in?

Or OO gauge railway is not far off (it is 1:76 scale, I think).
You could "smoke out" the canopy and not glue it down to allow you to add the pilot later.
Yeah there is a cockpit in the model. I think the model is intended to be displayed with its landing gear down, as though its on an airstrip or something, and I've converted it slightly so it looks like its in flight, so that may explain the lack of pilot.
As for the pilot models, I may have to look into getting one later. but I think I'll just have to wash the inside of the canopy and call it a day so I can get it done in time.
My final pic collage thingy. I finished young Eddie the Raven Guard before this comp so Antor must fly solo. Loved painting these jump pack guys. Havent done SM jump packs before so was nice doing something new. Defintely going to make some of the DM guys jumpers too ....when I get around to them!
@Manalishi - As a point of caution, don't rush just for the challenge. You'll get a lot of deserved respect for finishing alone. I've failed to do so often enough. If you know you really want the pilot in there leave an avenue open for you to pursue it. Ultimately though, have fun, the early photos looked great, can't wait to see therms result.
@Januine - when are you going to admit you are a closet BA fan? great job on the blond-haired wonder. The jet packs are superb!

Cheers mate. I think I can live without the pilot in there, but I might leave the canopy unglued just in case I change my mind.
Here's a WIP shot. pretty much done, just have to add the missiles, canopy, and a few decals, then work out some sort of basing arrangement.
Just about got my entry to a point where I'm happy with it. It's not exactly my finest work, but hopefully I can come back fighting with Eldrad next month, that's an amazing mini I hope I can do justice.
Will be interesting to see who wins the battle of the Deathwatch mins, some very strong entires in that sub-challange.
TP^DC Deputy Manager, awesome work on the Nephilim Jetfighter, How did you do some of the streaks on the wings? I was trying to work out how to do something like that on my Triplane but ran out of research time in the end..
Glad you got some better pics in there Zobo, looking good, I like the jet pack effect
I will have to call mine mostly finished now, seem to have been staring at him this week and not getting much done, would have likely to do more weathering on the plane and added a few more bits and gubbins. Still very happy how it turned out in the end. The Fokker bits matched the Deffkopta quite well scale wise.
My entry, Baron Von Orkthofen (the Red Baron) with 80 confirmed kills to his name.
I feel like the skin contrasts on the face are a little more pronounced IRL, but photos don't lie, so maybe I'll give it a slight wash at some point. I've doctored the model a little, removing some rope that was just incredibly frail and almost impossible to line up correctly. The satchel was also a pain to attach, as you can see, I didn't quite manage it, but it's far more integral to the model so it had to stay.
Spent a long time thinking about how to do the falcon, pretty pleased with how he's come out. First time I've ever done anything like it. Quite happy with some of the transitions on the coat too.
Jan - cheers, man. Guildenstern beat me to telling you what it is and describing how fiddly the fether was! His scowly, squinty face does bear a certain resemblance.
Guildenstern - thank you muchly. Fiddly and fine is about right. I spent the entire duration of painting him absolutely terrified that I'd snap the falcon's legs. They were by far the worst thing about building him (align damn it!!!)and they're such tiny points of contact. It is a really cool model though and totally worth the hassle. May take a wee break before thinking about doing the other one in the box, though!
unfortunately, i didn't get a chance to do anything more than build my Tau Coldstar Commander, so he will have to wait for another appropriate challenge...
i was busy finishing up my contribution for the NOVA Open Charity auction, raising money for Doctors Without Borders...
sadly, Astorath decided that he could fly, and launched himself off of my painting table on Sunday, and exploded...
i got the repairs done, but the convention starts tomorrow, leaving me no time to ship him to DC...
they will just have to use him next year...
the good news is that he fits the theme this month!!!
lucky, that, even if i did paint red again...
i feel like i rushed a bit at the end, but here he is:
Astorath the Grim, Redeemer of the Lost, High Chaplain of the Blood Angels...
i have been so slammed this month, with all of my deadlines converging this week...
i haven't even had a chance to check out everyone's entries yet...
i look forwward to catching up, and seeing what you all came up with...
good luck!!!
Some great entries coming in at the last minute. I gotta love the Ork Baron's triplane, such a clever model idea! And that Flanker looks pretty sharp as well. And of course, Buttery's herald looks pretty good as well (I couldn't even really tell where any damage to the mini was).
@Sockwithaticket, I agree that the face on yours needs... something. Probably a little more shading round the eyes and eyebrows. Other than that, it looks great, particularly the shading on the coat/cloak.
@Manalishi, that Flanker has come out very nice, particularly the canopy tint.
#walks past another sickeningly good Jah-Joshua entry, routine at this point!#
@Buttery, that's a really nicely shaded model and I genuinely can't spot the damage from those photos, so you're OK
TY for the link and explanation TP^DC, i'll have to try that next time, it looks very good.
Your painting always looks very smooth sockwithaticket
Manalishi, nice work on finishing, its looks like a very nice piece with the base.
Shame you didnt get your min to the NOVA Open Charity auction, jah-joshua, I bought a ticket the other week.
I can't see any damage in the photos BC, its a cool piece.
