Hey guys! A lot of us are prepping our armies for the upcoming October GW's armies on parade... But a lot of us have no FLGS, or don't have terrain skills, or simply don't have time this year.
So I thought that we could have a little fun here, and using the same date as GW's Armies on Parade (15th October) hold a showcase and little contest here.
For those building terrain and making their boards, we can share pics and WIPs, and for those who just have armies that they are proud of, polish them up a bit and take some kickass photos, either at home or at your local on some nice terrain.
I propose 3 categories:
Armies on Terrain
(Plain old AoP - army on a 24" by 24" board)
Armies on a Plane
(Armies without terrain of their own, nicely displayed)
Wildcard Armies
(Complete armies that are non GW models)
Nodri - PHR army for Dropzone Commander (complete)
All you need to do here, is sign up with your chosen army, and category, and then provide us with photos by the 15th of October.

Sounds like fun! Is it possible to post pictures of it the night of the 15th? I kinda want to keep my AoP board in the dark for now since a few people that go to my store post on here

Post by: Buttery Commissar
Yeah, I'll actually say the submission deadline is the 16th.
And then voting will be done by comment, for a week so everyone has a chance of being online.

Great idea!
Think I'll have to have a go at this, I can't really compete locally, as I don't fancy my luck transporting an army and display board on an hour bus trip to my flgs
Now I just have to decide which army I want to work on for it...
Also, wow nodri! Nice one!

Post by: Buttery Commissar
Lovely stuff, Nodri!
And thanks guys, I just thought that a big part of AoP is showing your love for your army. I entered without realising it was a competition, so I like the idea a lot.

I gotta think on this. Probably something from Confrontation or Helldorado.

Started working on which models to take, and I may have underestimated how many figures are in my army...
40 Mordian infantry
95 Tanith
1 tank
13 commissars
1 jeep
I may have to rethink.

Are there any rules for armies on parade? Or just fit what you think looks cool in a 2’x2’ space?

Just that they are either a valid force in a game, or clearly themed, Nev.
So basically the limit is not posting every model you own for a gaming system. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just that they are either a valid force in a game, or clearly themed, Nev.

A quick update! I've worked a lot on this.
The board and army as of now.
A Razorback filled with Grey Hunters advance on the ridge.
The Dreadnoughts and the Wolf Lords Watch over the army.
Unfortunately Imgur crashed after these photos, but as you can see on the overview there are Thunderwolves and Fenrisian Wolves running together with Bikers and the finished Knight (yay!). Long Fangs stand by the hill, and the terminators advance behind them.

Awesome idea.
I just finished my terrain/board a few minutes ago.
Took me a few weeks or more. I first thought about an 'Assault on Black Reach' theme = SM vs Orks.
2nd thought was an Ork-attack on some Tau I got but I decided to keep it simple and just put my Ork on the mat.
They won the comp last time due to the fact that I was new to the local community. I didn t even have an own board cause I didn t know it was required. So here it is:
Thoughts welcome if there is something I should change!
The tree is scratchbuilt (wire, GS, paint and moot (?)).
The pond is made off hot glue and the Koi in there is a bit of GS

man, you guys...putting in all this effort, hand-crafting big, fancy terrain and everything...I'd only planned on some kind of thematic re-paint of one of my old realm of battle board tiles
...I also haven't even decided which of my armies I want to do this for yet ...also, I don't really want to just slap down an army of already-painted stuff
...my orks, which are probably my favourites, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about displaying them...which kind of units, etc...also, most of the kind of things that would be good for display, are painted...
...my nurgle chaos marines...typhus, zombies, converted plague marines with converted rhinos...something like that - but I've already got all that painted
...my nurgle daemons...plaguebearers, nurglings, plague drones, a GW great unclean one...I've got "a box" of all of those painted already, and 2 more boxes of each still to paint...I could paint up some more and put them on display...
...orrr I'm just starting a 30k salamanders army...I've got about 40 old RTBeakie marines, a salamanders contemptor, 5 pyroclasts, and 5 firedrakes...but they're all unpainted...and that would probably take a while!

Looking great, Kustomer D!
I like the koi!
I think you need some Orky trash. Bits they discarded, junk piles, etc. Make the board show who they are when they're not "home".
And ZoBo, already painted stuff is absolutely fine. It's Armies on Parade! Not paint an army from scratch!

Thanks Buttery,
Here is a pre-setup. I guess there ll be not enough space for orky trash - but I still have about a month to think about it.
There are still some guys to paint. The Chinork will get 5 Boyz, one of the Koptas and a Weirdboy still need some attention.

My depression manifests in escapism, so I can tell that I must be depressed because I am painting like 5h a night at the moment.
Given all of these factors, I am trying to get a compliant AoP entry together based on an old eldar battleforce I have. I also want to do a nebula effect, so here is the wave serpent (interior painted and magnetised as well)
E: I'd also like to talk about what a piece of gak this model is. The 1997 cast was utterly maddening, it was worse than forgeworld stuff.

I’m no expert, but it seems that would be a good idea to protect the foam/etc. from chipping or otherwise getting damaged. I’d worry about seems being visible if you use a number of smaller bits put together.

Finally, I got a chance to work on my board! This is 3/4" pine cut w/ a jigsaw (just use foam; trust me). Plan is to flock all the horizontal surfaces and paint the slanted surfaces of the hills to look like sandstone or some other kind of sedimentary rock formation. The sanded pine looks so nice raw, I just hope I don't screw it up; hopefully it looks even better painted.
On display will be the warboss, two kannons w/ grot krew, my Tankbustas, a squad of Freeboota shootas w/ kaptin and a squad of Deathskulls shootas w/ boss nob.

OK, here is my semi-phoned in entry. Not doing a display board. But I marked off a 2’x2’ section of my table, and used the custom webway portal I made for a LoER contest earlier this year. The paint on these guys spans over two decades. Some, like the old guardians and flacons, date from 2nd-3rd edition. Two of the Dire Avengers I just finished off today. Even though the exarch is a bit of old RT lead. You can tell the old stuff as it was done in my black wash everything stage. Glad that’s behind me.
Should be approximately an 1,850 point playable list.

Post by: Nevelon
Despite being a work in progress for a couple of decades, this contest helped push me to finish up some units and get it so I could actually field an army with my Eldar. Specifically the fire dragons and dire avengers. I needed those guys to make a more balanced army that wasn’t just putting units on the table to make points. I think I’m still stretching a little bit to get to 1,850, but should be able to do a solid thematic 1,500 now.

Army on.... 3 giant tables (two folding, and 1 large dinning table). or a plane.
I couldn't tell you the points if I tried.
But it consists of.
A number of custom SM (center-center of front table), Skitarii (front-left of front table), MT Scions (front-right of front table), IG infantry + HWT (can't miss them.) , HQs and HQ support (Front-center).
including of course. A lot of tanks, artillery, APCs, 3 flyers (2 Vendettas, 1 Stormhawk), 1 Knight, and even 3 Super Weapons (War Zeppelin, Ordinatus Majoris, Atomic Cannon).
Each vehicle is converted/customized/scratch built in some way to some degree. Your going to have to zoom-in to see everyone in there.
I had to squish myself into the closet to get everything in frame.

That must have taken you longer to get out on the table than most 40k games last!
52364
Post by: Engine of War
Not sure. The tanks didn't take too long due to their size. its the infantry that were a pain. having to place down each and every individual one... uggh.... and many are unpainted or not even based.
Not looking forward to painting them. If they will be painted at all.
That and the sheer number of guys is why I took the picture at home. As opposed to going out to the FLGS. The tables are usually in use and while most are ok with big displays, they would rather prefer them to be played on.

@D41VD0 congrats on that!
My Orks made 1st place. To be honest it seemed like I was the only one who put
Some real work into it. One guy put a Chaos codex on the table and added two cultists - his AoP!
Another one had a grey standard GW board and put some DarkEldar on it who were partly basecoated. - Dark Eldar at Nightfighting!
2nd place was a GW board off one of the stores guys - just some slime on it...
3rd was a board with a bit more work on it. An Eldar Crystalpalace or something.
I m a little disapointed caise I wanted to see some competative boards with a lot of nice miniatures and
a well thought concept on the whole thing.
The DE thing had a lot of possibilities. He told me about his idea and I thought it might be interessting.

Here's the final work! The board on it's own didn't turn out quite as I had hoped, but it's not terrible. I didn't have much time to finish it, and this is my first attempt at making terrain; prior to this project, the most of the flocking I've ever used at one time was to base a single mini, and this thing took half a ziplock of the stuff so there was a bit of a learning curve.
I did make it to my local GW for Armies on Parade. The event was lots of fun, and there were some pretty stellar works on display; I didn't win anything, but those who did definitely deserved it. It was about an even mix of 40k and Sigmar.
The first image is resized to be viewer friendly. Warning: the spoilered images are pretty huge, but I wanted people to be able to zoom in on particular minis for a closer look.
