Current Logged Hours: 360~ Hours (as of 6/13) just finished Car Wrecks

Completed City: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/728964.page#9433194

This is currently primed/airbrushed. I've yet to put a paint brush to the terrain yet

What am I looking at??:

A 5x4 Wargaming table for Dropzone Commander by Hawk Wargames inspired by The Last of Us

The 10mm structures are built from a majority of HWG resin (they sell on their site), foamcore, and cardstock

The Modular Overpass is from Blotz (uk) 10mm Custom Lasercut - wonderful company 10/10. Quickest international shipping I've ever witnessed for how cheap it was.

Table is a 5x4 - made from triple layered foamcore. This is extraordinarily dumb, but I wanted a lightweight board that I could store, dig into, and toss if I decided to redo it or I ruined it by accident. I've built a dozen or so tables, hardboard+pink insulation foam, wood, or full 3/4" mdf, and honestly foamcore isn't that bad as long as you layer it. Six tiles; I can toss this in a small bag and it weighs nothing. I spent a few hours fixing this issue.

Why Adeptus Titanicus?
At a Battletech player with no friends that play - and a young lad during the days of Epic Armageddon - I decided to preemptively start building the city for both games. Can't wait to see more leaks!

Why Dropzone Commander?
From the few demo games I've had - I was impressed. It reminded me of an actual tactical strategy game and I loved the flow of it. It also reminds me of Command and Conquer / Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander from my childhood. Ace game, and when you flip through that rulebook you immediately want to play on something better than cardstock starter kit buildings.

Goal: I wanted to make a table that rivals ED-209b's dream table (http://www.hawkforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4348&start=100) - I have a long way to go before I can compete with that.

A few things I didn't like about his city:

* How clean everything was
* I don't want to paint white lines on the streets
* No "40k city fight" look to the streets/structures
* Lack of overgrowth/craters/dirt

However - he is FAR more talented then I am (technically and as a painter). This is also why I need to make up for his level of painting detail for dirt/damage/rust/flock and to not rush anything.

Primary Objectives

1) Finish painting the UCM Army - consider ordering Decals*
2) Paint the remainder of the resin structures, doodads, and flock and paint the card stock structures
3) Paint my friend Niko's Scourge (His army will never get painted otherwise)
4) Play some of the greatest looking games of DZC with some friends down in NJ/PA

Decals* = http://www.fightingpirannhagraphics.com/

Woodland Scenics Flock Stock:
Burnt Grass Fine and Coarse
Soil Fine
Earth Fine
Medium Green Coarse
Dark Green Underbrush/Heavy
Burnt Static Grass
GF9 Yellow Grass
GW Static Grass
AP Tufts Highlands x3 Jungle x1

Currently I tried a mix and glued it in:
- Burnt Grass Fine 70%
- GW Static Grass 10%
- Medium Green Coarse 20%

Okay so the ideas for the next buildings:

* Grass only on windows/ledges
* 1~ tree per building
* Only using tufts on the roof or unit bases (due to $$$ actually - they are not cheap for "terrain" usage)
* Various colored washes for building aging. Brown/black/light red/light green
* Add the Earth fine flock to the blend (it's like graveyard earth brownish) to darken the mix (using burnt grass off a recommendation).
* Make the non-grey office buildings quite a bit brighter. Paint them red brick? This one looks dreary and the green was a poor choice.

I was considering the glass/water effects/varnish idea - but it's not going to be ideal for an entire city. I might just go with the stock flat black and leave it.

I will be posting pictures of the overpass after work - currently figuring out how to make the graffiti work and weathering. I should be finished flocking it tonight

Now that I'm working on it - I might have wanted to prime it a lighter shade of grey

Once it's completed and I finished painting the two armies I have - I'll need to borrower someone's camera to take some sweet photos. These are all from my phone unfortunately. I really wanted a specific look for this table.

I should finish up the second building tonight. This one is a metal/sci fi looking structure. (I'm not that happy how the first building turned out)

• 2x Scourge Gunships
• Overseer/Desolator

Mind ing blown.

This is one of the best tables I've ever seen for any system and the fact that you've done it for my game of choice makes it even better. What sets it apart is that it's more than an abandoned city, it's a proper narrative that's told in terrain form. It's a prime example of a work that crosses the line from terrain to art. My current project is a DzC table in the theme of Odin's Foundry on Eden Prime. It's still very much under construction and nothing is even primed. While thematically very different, your table has still given me lots of ideas and, most importantly, the inspiration to tell a story.

Thank you.

Test model below.

Scheme: Bleached Bone Base
Alt Color: Red/White Stripe, Blue Lenses / Glows
Heavy Sponge Weathering to show they've been on the ground for a few months. Some models are converted up with extra side panel armor and stowage. The test Kodiak with that horrific mold line:

- 6 Rapiers
- 6 Sabres
- 5 Condors

- 4 Legionnaires w/ Mortars
- 2 Gladius
- 4 Wolverines
- 3 Katana

Missing
I am missing 3 Cockpits for 3 Condors

Units I would want to add
Albatross, Fireblades or Katanas, and General Wade

Unbuilt
Snipers, Flak Infantry, Preatorians

Unfortunately I only have a picture from instagram of the WIP.

The army should be finished shortly and I'll be back on the terrain train. The red and white lines are messy, I need to outline them with a tin black and fix them. Otherwise:

1) Prime Brown
2) Prime Bleached Bone / Army painter equivalent
3) Paint Metallic, gunmetal + 1:3 part black
4) Layer Red/White for squad markings
5) Layer Teal/blue cockpit/lenses
6) Wash Sepia/GW Gryphonne
7) Paint Black Lines on White Red/Tires/Any other detail
8) Highlight Beige, White, and Red
9) Sponge dark brown black as a rust effect over the model
10) Extreme light wash in some crevices of orange
11) Highlight to white and varnish lenses/cockpit

I'm about 6 hours into painting after the priming. The total army should be completed by this weekend.

The local group is fairly dead with anything but X-Wing in terms of space games.

The HWG Resin buildings - if you buy them as kits are 100+ parts each. You can order individual parts for cheaper than ordering them as "lego sets" aka a list of components to make a building they designed. So If I wanted to make an office complex buildings, I can order the office walls/windows in packs of x40, ignore the specialized tiles, use plasticard for some areas and texture card, and since I wanted to have the majority of the buildings heavily damaged I required less pieces. There would be no reason to purchase complete pristine structures if I was going to blow holes in them.

I should be able to finish the UCM over the next two days

I have two options. I can attempt to work on the drop ships and the infantry - or flush out the vehicles. I'm thinking I should get everything up to the post wash point so I can finish/highlight unit by unit and make it easier on myself then attempting to rush it.

So for tonight - Basecoating Dropships and Infantry! then tossing on a quick wash

I used the majority of the original 50 cars for either basing or the overpass and terrain. I need LOS blocking terrain I can drop down on the roads.

I'm also designing a few small parks and parking lots with chain link fences surrounding them soon that will break up the alleyways for the buildings.

I primed 20 Lamp Posts as well and based them on pennies

I'll make a tutorial tonight actually

1) Print the picture out
2) Glue on to the object you desire, do not mix water with the white glue - super thin layer
3) Get a sponge/foam from a 40k or warmachine blister pack - dab it in a dark brown paint
4) The link here shows you an example http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=1736

Do not gloss varnish or varnish by spray

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Currently making road blocks + destroyed cars

1) Cut out an old MKII Warmachine Stat card
2) Pour Resin (or putty/wood filler) onto the card
3) Add destroyed cars and sink their tires in
4) Add sand before the resin dries - or apply with a brush and white glue
5) Prime, paint, flock

I'll post pictures later tonight - I've only used 50 of the 100 cars I have used

The game out of the box - has no LOS blocking terrain except destructible buildings. This causes the game to be quite a bit more interesting with "real terrain" vs the basics.

Check out your standard table (this is a 6x4 so it would be for a larger point game). Basic firing lanes and fairly boring.

There are three factions that make use of Walkers (PHR is faction has the majority of it's units as mechwarrior/Tau suit type units). Their ability to walk over debris/terrain does matter when the entire table is only cardstock buildings.

From the FAQ:
Are there rules of different terrain types, and does a vehicle's design have an effect on movement through different qualities of terrain?

Yes, there are various rules for terrain types, and the unit's mode of movement does have a effect! For example, a skimmer can pass over impassable ground (rivers, lava flows etc) and move over tough ground (e.g. uneven, rocky areas) without penalty, but can't move through area features (like forest), since they have no ground traction. A walker can move through tough terrain without penalty also, and can plough through area features without penalty. A normal treaded or wheeled vehicle gets movement bonuses when travelling over exceptional ground (such as roads). Flyers can obviously fly over anything less than 6" above ground level.

I was inspired by this guy: http://greenstuffindustries.blogspot.com/2016/08/dropzone-bridge-terrain-complete.html

That makes total sense! And is probably why we felt our games became a little too simplistic / repetitive... all just open firing lanes between buildings on smooth roads. 40K would probably be pretty boring if played with no rough terrain / cover / etc, too.

Looking forward to seeing them painted

The more work I do on the project the slower it seems to get.

I keep wanted to add different elements. I'm now looking at the armorcast pipe terrain or the HWG monorail, a few more resin or plastic ho/nscale china buildings, and considering water effects in the craters - and I want normal terrain craters as well I can place where I want!

Updated page one status on progress

Army should be completed by tonight I should have around 4.5 hours of free time to paint. Bought coffee/setup table.

Then I can finally finish the table/terrain.

House rules have also been a huge bonus. I might start making various types of turrets/defences for the UCM. Our last game we played - we had a min requirement of 12 infantry bases at 1000 points for UCM vs UCM. My unpainted, mostly broken model, half converted Scourge friend wants to start making Half life headcrab type zombies and giving them homebrew rules. They appear in buildings or around spores shot in by the Scourge - still working on it. Bought some ho scale civilians for this task.

Loving this blog. I picked up a starting box for each of the 5 factions in the hope to start up a good DZC community in my area. Now I know what I need next: some kick-ass terrain!

There are so many good ideas on this thread. I am just warning you that I am going to blatantly steal a lot of these for my own board

Thank you! I recommend avoiding resin buildings if you want your friends to ever get a chance to even play the game

This game has so many possibilities!

The girlfriend wants a purse thats the equivalent cost of the resin buildings in this thread for holidays....

I asked girlfriend for https://www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Acrylic-72172-Plastic-Storage/dp/B009LH0YTA since I didn't want to send her on a last chancer's mission buying specific hobby tools/models/paints/armies for me.

Setup hobby table again, I've been neck deep working with Warmachine models but I should be able to tackle something this week. Life has been busy

I was also commissioned to paint a scourge army for a friend, added that to the budget on the first page. We're both still working on the conversions.

Primary: Metallic Bronze or Silver with oxidization/rust/some natural damage from the elements since the army's fluff is that it's been planetside for nearly 200 years.

Secondary: Blue or Red lenses and weapons. I'll paint up both to see how it'll looks. Basing will be identical to the UCM flightstands you see above on page 2. All hover tanks will be hovering 1/4-1/3 inch above ground on a flight peg... fun.

He's given me these two pictures for scheme idea:

And this is an alternate scheme of "Dark Matrix Metal" which we talked about would be the easiest - but unsure if it would look good. He said he'd want snow basing if he goes this route. We're unsure if this will blur the detail of the models over a brighter metal.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Scourge Conversions:

• Oppressor: The stock model is fine – he'd like to bulk up how high the model is as well as add tubs underneath the stomach of the crab. Like the CSM brass scorpion from forge world, I would like to beef up the undercarriage with plague bubbles? Give tubes to the rear guns and in general add various plague/small conversion work
• Overseer: The model will have a jellyfish like appearance. Twenty or more tentacles will hang from the undercarriage of a converted Harbinger off ebay. Similar to the oppressor? Greenstuff press and try and recreate more lenses and eyes around it. This model will not have any magnetization.
• Bought 4x Slayers, now wants two of them to be Tormentors. Similar to the chaos baneblade variation I'll heavily greenstuff the turrets since I do not have the correct turrets.
• Reapers: Some conversion work to have tentacles and tubes connect the AA gun to the rear of the tank
• Destroyers complete conversions from models provided to me – three to a base. They are some 6mm mechwarrior troop. They will have an assortment of weaponry and look like CSM Obliterators. I will use extreme detail with the tubes when sculpting. This will take some time.
• Intruder Alpha and Beta there will be four Alphas and two betas. The alphas will be stock models with some minor conversion work. The Betas will have large bulbous sacks underneath them. He bought 6 of the same transport and now I have to see how to convert them.
• Marauder: Greenstuff tube the starter kit models to have "cables" almost inside the carriage of the transport. These are already built and I have to convert them now.

The rest of the army was built. I'll add basing to the infantry and tanks.

Currently removed the wires from these I got off of China eBay - then glued them to pennies. Decided against magnetization after a few attempts. They are weight enough to be fine if I bump the table.

The board itself warped quite a bit from sealing it with varnish/the white glue used on it. Going to attempt to get this cut for me at home depot

http://www.homedepot.com/p/MDF-Panel-Common-3-4-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-750-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-M11161249097000000A/202332600

Then I'll gorilla glue / wood glue the boards down. I'll figure out how to block prime/edge the boards (possibly dry brush them gray then)

I've played battletech on it with old click minis from Wizkids but the scale is a bit off / feels weird. I also barely own any models. I just ebay'd my net epic Black Templars and Tyranids to prep for AT.

The tiles warped a bit. I need to mount the tiles and paint their edges. I'm also unhappy with how fragile the overpass is, a handful of pieces already broke off and I've barely used it. Going on vacation this weekend as well so a two week break or so. So close yet so far.

Spectacular!

That building is amazing! I actually got more of a Roman forum vibe from it (probably cause I've been reading about Rome for the past 6 months, haha). I can just imagine some feral resistance warlord holding "court" here and leading his tribe in celebrations and/or sacrifices before battle.

Also, please forgive me for a little self-promotion, but your blog has really inspired me over the past month to start my own DZC project. I've been painting all 5 starter armies and am going to be building a table in order to try and generate some local players to try out the game. Your overgrown look is exactly what I am aiming for. While I'm not even close to as good of a painter as you, I would love some tips and feedback from you if you get the chance. The link is in my signature.

Great work once again, and thanks for giving me the inspiration to dive back into the hobby!

Magical.

I can really see myself walking around these buildings with all the senses engaged. They just come to life when you look at them. You mentioned before that you could have included more detail if you'd wanted, I'd love to see that, I can only imagine how engaging that would be. In fact I implore you to do one piece, as a separate project, and just see how far you can push it. If you could document the process, even better, it would be fascinating to see.

Thank you!

The only piece I went all out on is the "memorial" park piece I painted up and some of the graffiti on the overpass - the propaganda poster work takes it to the next level - even though these would rot away in relation to the overgrowth over the years

Few things I could do:

- Paint windows (not just flat black them)
- Better leakage/water damage from the windows. Have more brown inks/trickles of water going down the buildings
- Highlight/edge bricks a bit. Individual bricks on the ground/strewn around
- More variation on vegetation - possibly more dead grass/iron poisoned flora damage
- Posters/Signs/more human signs. Papers/trash covering the floo
- LEDs
- Correct burn damage/black edges

Thats my favorite work as well. The larger buildings are fairly boring - I felt like I had to just bang them out to finish.

Slowly working on a resistance shanty town/orky scrap buildings, power lines, and fences to add a more rural feel

It's a combination of the 6-10mm terrain I didn't finish for Epic: Armageddon or DZC. By no means is this fancy terrain, I just wanted to crank it out last weekend. Built from bits, spare magic the gathering cards, wire, and extra junk.
A common complaint for the game DZC is the lack of "Scatter/Area/Small" Terrain. This can add some variation to my table setup.
