I've been craving an apocalypse battle recently so I was just mentally counting up how many points I can field, then I realised something: I own 8 super heavy models, ranging from Primarchs, to Daemon engines, to mini titans. I didn't initially think that this was a lot but then I thought about 2 of my closer friends who had been playing for just as long as me: one is an IG player with 4 super heavies and the other is an Ork player with 5 super heavies. Come to think of it, even my friend who plays Imperial Knights only has 6 knights.
So now I have to ask the question: do I have too many Super Heavies? Or do I not have enough and me and my mates have been woefully under armed in the Super Heavy department?
Be interesting to see how many Super Heavies everyone has and, if you want to leave a comment, what army/ies are they for.

At present I just have a single Renegade Knight for my Death Guard. Later this year I do intend to purchase a second and perhaps a super heavy tank from Forge World for them as well.

I find one Super Heavy is all that you REALLY need for matched play. I use a Lord of Skulls, and got a Renegade Paladin off to the side.

Uh, let me think.
Taunar, Brass Scorpion, renegade and loyalist Knights, a pylon, an obelisk and I'm working on building an Ordinatus out of scenery kits.
So I think seven unless I missed one.

I haven't got a one, but really they're your stuff, only you should be the judge of how many is too many! or too few, really.
Personally i prefer smaller models to really giant ones so i can't imagine ever having any. My favorite imperial guard tank is and probably always will be the chimera, that's the sort of "big" tank I like.

I've always favored a MSU approach to list building rather than Death Stars or SHV.
Also, transporting models to and from shop is a pain, so if I cant fit everything into a single Sabol bag, I don't even consider it.

I firmly believe they belong in huge (3000+) point games only, but I do have 3, and for good reason:
Spartan Assault Tank - because it can actually carry a 20-man Crusader Squad
Typhon Heavy Seige Tank - because I love Vindicators and Land Raiders, and this thing is essentially a Land Raider caught halfway through eating a Vindicator
Fellblade - quite simply because it is, in my opinion, the best looking model GW makes (particularly when blinged up to fit in with the Black Templars!)

3 Imperial Knights - all of these are freeblades, one was for looks, one was to go with an army, and the last was for knight on knight fights like some sort of robot fighting league (it's a gallant of course).. still need to work out some sponsor decals for it if I ever revisit the idea. But then I'd probably want to build more knights for it so it's probably best to leave it alone.

My superheavies include (since the term is somewhat loosely defined in this thread):
A Renegade Knight, originally for my Khorne Daemonkin army in 7th edition, where it served with distinction and reaped many skulls for Khorne.
A KV128 Stormsurge Ballistic Suit for my Tau. It too served me well in 7th, but like the Renegade Knight it has yet to see a table in 8th.
Mortarion, Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard. He's seen a few battles and I consider him a very good investment.
I also have a loyalist Imperial Knight, still on sprues. Not sure that counts though. I've got little incentive to get it built and painted since Knights just aren't very good in 8th for their points.

I've had the Armorcast models since the 90's, I only finally ever used them in a game late this last year.

One Stompa and four Imperial Knights. Up to now only the Stompa and one Knight are painted. They are great models and their sight fills me with pride and joy. But I don´t want to build another Stompa. It was just a hassle to assemble. Both Walkers spend their time in my cabinet because I am afraid to transport any of them. In particular the Grots can easily come off.
The Stompa is painted in a Bad Moonz paint scheme and the Knight has a jungle camo pattern. The latter fits in well with my Catachans.

Not to put you off or anything but I did have a friend who brought a Stompa to one of our apocalypse games only to find that it had caved in on itself in transit (he must have not believed hard enough). However, during the game it did mean his 20 boyz that were inside the Stompa could ride on the base which was fun to watch.

Yeah, the Stompa is a very fragile model and I intend to only use it in games at my home. He participated in only one battle and in true orky fashion ran out of ammo with his main gun on turn 1...
But that´s not too bad because I spend more time painting & assembling than playing the game.
I forgot to answer your question. As long as it is no chore for you to build the actual model there is no limit for your collection. Though your cabinet might run out of space.
I will finish first my remaining three Knights before there are any new additions to my collection. Perhaps the new Pacific Rim movie will spark my interest to paint an Imperial Knight again. The last one took me two weeks to complete and the Stompa seven years...
I would like to purchase a Gorkanaut/Morkanaut in the future to help my Stompa out in an Imperial Knight Renegades game. Is the Gorkanaut/Morkanaut kit easier to assemble than the Stompa?

That rule always did make me feel a bit better about Chaos' random rules that could turn out great or kick you in the nuts.

Oh it already has, though it is only a small cabinet so I should probably get another.

From what I saw of my friends slow migration from a base, to a headless/armless body, to an unpainted and then fully painted Morkanaut over the cause of several games, they aren't that hard to build and much sturdier than a Stompa.

1 Marauder Destroyer
1 Reaver Titan
So *just* past 11+
I have had the joy of using all of them at once, against a single opponent with a similar ... compulsion, albeit not yet in 8th edition.
Knights are still sufficiently evil, but not untenable that I don't feel quite so bad running them regularly. The Tanks have been shelved with the rest of my IG collection because IG is not fun to play against for my area at the moment.
The Reaver only comes out with an appointment, because with all the steel that went in to it's assembly it weighs north of 20 kg on its own.

Plastic Baneblades -> had no more "its resin" excuse to keep away from Super Heavies.

The closest I come is 40k Guiliman. (who still needs paint)
In the few apoc sized games I’ve played, I’ve felt the lack of a big centerpiece model. But none of the marine ones really appealed to me. And how much do I want to spend on something I’m kinda “meh” on that’s only going to see the table once every few years? I know you can use them in normal games these days, but that’s not really my style.
I’d be more likely to pick up a Eldar SH tank, as I love the looks of those, but my army is nowhere near big enough to justify including one, and again, the price.
A knight or baneblade-chassis might find it’s way into my collection at some point, but at a low priority. They have the advantage of being plastic and readily available.
