Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 44 October 2018: Be Afraid! Be Very Afraid!  @ 2018/10/01 16:51:00

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome to the 44th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge! For the unfamiliar, the challenge is a friendly competition open to any Dakka members, whether you're painting your first model or your 1001st! The more rounds you enter, the more points you accrue based on a public vote, and these are tracked in a League Table over the course of the year.

This month, we come round again to the classic October theme of all things spooky and scary. Whether that's creeping dread or in-your-face horror, subtle or overt, the scarier the better for this Halloween round!

How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of October and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Just like last year, I'll paint a batch of Poxwalkers:

I'll paint all ten, and pick the best five to be my final entry. Good luck everyone!

Hrm, I've got a plan that almost fits the theme, but not exactly... It's more of a 'halloween costume' level of scary rather than actual scary. I guess to the wee little yoots and snotlings it might be scary though .

What's spookier than Maugan Ra, Harvester of Souls? I have a busy October, but I know I can get at least one model done before the month is through. I might increase his base size a little.

Well... It's not scary. It's not spooky. It's not a skeleton.

It's an Imperial Fists Captain with Storm Bolter and Chainsword! The most terrifying thing any Heretic could see shortly before being demised forcibly. Also painting yellow is scary. I am afraid. I'm very afraid.

Side note: Will use better camera for later shots. I promise that grey blob is a Captain.

Sure, I'll throw my hat in the ring - I'll enter a chaos spawn. A currently very WIP chaos spawn. Hopefully it's not too far ahead in the making process to be entered?

Note: Final pics will be taken with a better camera, better lighting situation, and a background that isn't my messy workstation.

I have an arrangement that nearly fits the subject, however not precisely... It's all the more a 'halloween ensemble' level of terrifying instead of real unnerving. I figure to the small little yoots and snotlings it may be frightening however

That sort of thing is absolutely appropriate for this round. We always get a few 'costume' entries in the Halloween round and they're always great.

so I totally spaced out on this the past couple of months, but I think I might have a go at this one - hopefully I'll be able to get it done before I get hopelessly distracted by the impending new ork stuff

...anyway, here's my proof pic...Horticulus Slimux...I've had this model sitting around for...oof...quite a while now I think about it...grabbed it off an ebay box-splitter, from the blightwar box, before he was available separately ...anyway, it seems fitting to me, it's always given me a bit of a Tim Burton vibe, with it's fantastical storybook-esque cheerful spookiness

Sitting down for a pre-hobby smoke. Going to do the pumpkin.

Initially I was just going to do the skull pile base and then I realized the backside of the base looked rather bare. I was going to make a simple plant with wire and flock but then decided to try making leaves. Then I realized I had room for a jack o lantern. That's probably within the bounds of my experience with green stuff! So away we go. Don't expect anything too fancy.

Also I've decided this guy is going to be 6th Company since their trim is orange.

Also that is a sick Slaanesh Demon. It's probably going to win.

No pics yet, but last night I assembled the first of the halloween grots... what's scary to a grot? Spez Marines! So the little guy is wearing a space marine costume. He'll be getting some buddies, haven't decided if they'll be a little grotling tac-squad or perhaps more varied costumes. I'd love to have tau, eldar, and 'nid costumes as well, but the cost of the bits may be prohibitive for singular models.

So, just got the Village attacks kickstarter stuff in at the start of the month, really wanted to do that werewolf, so--proof pics, with bonus plague doctor I probably won't get to.

And I'd call this WIP, but really I just need to figure out what I want to do for a base. Open for ideas--could continue with the green stuff brick as its technically for a dungeon based game, but not sure it'll fit around his feet right, and may have the usual "model blends into the base" problem.

Extremely WIP with just a couple drybrush layers and a shade but its the first time I paint a really dark miniature. So... what can i do to make it not look like a big black thing? Am i worrying too much and once I drybrush it some more and add the details it will look ok? I could really use some advice.

Straken, yes, more layers of color and details will help, contrast I'm told is the big thing, and using it to define the shape. You can kinda see the shine from your light on him, and its a fairly bright grey- you can kinda use that as a guide. Also, use color variation and details to break it up--you can kinda see the start of an effect like that between the dark green of the horse and the dark blue of the guy.

Well I got some stuff basecoated today. My back is killing me so I don't have the energy to go get the good camera.

I decided to use brown as my basecoat for the yellow. I've seen that turn out well. Oh and for his cloak I decided on company colour outer layer and purple for the inner. So purple and orange, lol.

Might try some OSL on the pumpkin to make it look like less of a cartoon.

Here is another.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I might do another couple layers of yellow, maybe with a bit of white mixed in. That should get the yellow to pop better. I wanted this guy to be really weathered like he's been fighting a long time but I still want that yellow to pop!

I've moved away from the GW style with raised highlights and the bold colours and started doing my own thing based on my experience painting Berzerkers. I'd like to think I'm inspired by Blanchitsu but I don't know. Whatever's. Basically the method revolves around building up from darker tones to a lighter one and leaving lots of shadow on the model. Each lighter shade goes on an increasingly smaller area so that the actual end tone takes up very little space. I work in small panels, sometimes it's just a dot of colour at the end. What ends up happening is the opposite of the GW style where the raised parts are the brightest. The edges remain dark and make it really easy to apply weathering. If I would have painted all this yesterday I could have taken better pictures to illustrate this...

Anyways, there he is. Captain Pumpkin Patch. Mostly done aside from whatever else I decide to do. Probably give him some muddy boots. Pick out the red Aquila and skulls better. Actually go get another blade for my hobby knife and drill that muzzle out a bit. And there is a bit of purple on the fold of his cape that needs touched up a bit.

Then it's on to that base! Skulls and Pumpkins. Hoorah.

Yay welcome back Zobo, looking forward to your snail

Nice work darkcloak, I like what you have done with the base so far.

Really nice idea Tim, will be great to see it painted up.

I've been debating what to do for a few days but going with these guys, as always help with the names would be appreciated. What do you guys think?
I've come up with "The Wicked Witch of the Waaagh! (West)", Freddy Kruegrot (Krueger) and Orkenstein, the almost successful squig brain transplant patient.

Hobgoblin, though I really have to see how tidying the hood and face work out. Some greenstuffing is involved, I´m not sure I´ve got the skills at this small scale to make it look allright, but I´ll give it a shot.

ZoBo, that's a great paintjob! Cool use of the fluorescent paint, it looks very nice in the dark.

Ordered a 54mm scale S.T.A.L.K.E.R. miniature. Hopefully it gets here in time, it might take me a while to make the scene around him. He is holding an artifact detector, so I'll go revisit the game and find a good place in the game with some anomalies to recreate.

Nice work Evil-D185, thats looking really cool, I like the suspense you have left us in by not showing the face

Good progress so far Rybrook, always liked those models but never been able to get any .

Interesting idea Coh Magnussen, I like the middle one the best.

Looking very good already Nev

No painting update from me but I have updated the league table

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/732117.page

Half way through the year and some very close positions for 1st, 2nd and 3-4th with 9 - 11 also hotly contested

Also I've finally got around to starting to post some of my stuff up on a Blog if anyone is interested feel feel to drop by, I'll be updating it over the next few weeks to catch up to where I am now

Thanks Midget Gems. The first and last are regular 40k gretchin with Space Marine bits added (I had to do some judicious knife-and-file work to make the body armor sufficiently hollow, but the shoulder pads just glued on). The middle is a full SM torso/head with fantasy goblin legs and arms (plus a spare choppa from the boys box). He's got a banner that will go with, I'm thinking an ultramarine symbol but with teef .

Hey everybody! I'm checking in with my finished entry for the month: Ennius Spinther, combat specialist for my Deathwatch Kill Team.
I'm a little saddened - I leave the country for 2 months (albeit for awesome study-related reasons) in mid-November. It's also the midst of exam time, so I'll need to be snappy and negotiate some spooky deadlines very carefully. It also means I'll miss December as far as the comp goes. A bummer to round of the year with a miss - it'll carry my total tally of missed ones for the year up to two. I was so close to getting something in every month! Oh well. Next year I guess

Good luck everybody!

Well, mine's done, just need to get some better photos.

Lipsdapips, that kinda sucks, but plus side, they're better than the ones I am getting in every month. That's a nice looking marine.

Magnussen, those are nicely goofy conversions. I like them alot.

Nevelon, the ghost streamers are coming along nicely, front one looks like its just about there.

And thanks as well to Midget Gems for keeping the chart up to date. That thing is a bear to wrestle...

I've had a tiring first half of the month, with a lot going on in work, and working on my Armies on Parade board in the evenings. In the week since AOP, I've been a bit burned out on starting anything else, so all I've managed to do so far is build and prime the model I've decided to paint. I'm going to paint a Plague Marine. Yep, just one bog standard Plague Marine. I've never painted anything Nurgley before, the closest being a female chaos marine I painted a few months ago for these challanges. I've got some cool new paints, and I'm going to try out some completely new techniques on this guy.

You always have really interesting ideas, felt, so I'm keen to see what you do with the plague marine...they are great models too...
Loving the grots, Coh Magnussen. You've done a really great job on them.
Awesomely crisp detail again, lips - the highlights on the hammer handle are amazing.
Nev - that rider is especially dynamic and you've done some nice work on the 'cloak / ethereal bits...I'm about to try one of those myself. Did you use washes over white or highlight up from blue? I'm unsure which to try...
I'll try to get some WIP pics up soon...

Pretty simple. No idea what the modern equivalent paints are (using cote d’arms era hex pots)

Prime white.
Basecoat Elf Grey (very pale, almost white, with a touch of blueish grey)
Turquoise glaze over all the white, into the black/red to blend. Actually used as a glaze, not just a wash. None of this “sticking to the recesses” junk.
Thin black/red layer on the robes/cloak to reinforce the non-etherial portion and blend down into the ghosty bits.
Light drybrush with the Elf Grey again to pick up the high points and blend a bit.

That’s my secret. Not much to it. The main stumbling block is I’m not sure GW makes anything close to a turquoise glaze these days. They flow completely differently from the modern shades.

He's a legend even amongst the Kazak veterans. Wearing Ratnik Battle suit, the one and only Romsky "murder machine" Vadimov.

The model is just crazy. Amazingly sharp detals. I wanted something different this time. The model is full of scratches and dents, the subtle camo pattern.
Did some experiments with semi-non metalic metal. I painted him more like a tank, well he is actually.

Off to bed, later.

That's pretty sexy.

I really need to push myself out of my GW comfort bubble.

Is the 'She-Demon' my lady?

If so, She-Demon/Zarakynel/The Violet Heart has had her gaps filled (wahey!) and is primed. I have 108 hours to slap paint on her and I'm off all weekend and Tuesday, so She should get finished.

Y'all should be very aware though that I pledged here for motivation, not because I'm a good painter. They call me Captain Drybrush.

Yep, She-Demon is your girl Ex.

It's a very hard vote for me this month. There are several devils on my shoulder telling me who to vote for.

1: The not-so-bad one. Vote for the one you think has been done the "best" so far... Deathwatch Dude. He's really crisp and black can be a challenging colour to paint.

2: The fun party time guy. Vote for the one that is the most "awesome"... Grot Marines. They look fantastic and make me laugh. I want to see the idea expanded on.

3: Thaaaaat guy, you know who we mean, he'sapervcoughcough. Vote for She-Demon, maybe Slaanesh is real and I'll get some sweet payback later when I open a minor warp rift with a ritualistic mass suicide of the followers I've been gathering. By the way, I've been gathering followers.

4: The pragmatist. Vote for yourself, you may be the only one who does if you don't finish strong!

By the time I typed this joke I could have painted the base coat on the base. Shame.

Bit of a last-minute entry from me this month, and I'm definitely phoning it in with this one, but at least it's not a DNF (I didn't enter 43 of these in a row to stop now! ). Been super-busy with uni this month and what free time I've had has largely been eaten by the new Assassin's Creed or running 2 D&D campaigns, but I managed to get a mini done just in time.

It's possibly overdone on the grime front even by my standards, but I actually quite like how he's come out; if anyone has a license to be more dirty and messy than usually appropriate it's a Plague Marine. Definitely find the ETB Plague Marines overly busy sculpts though, not as much scope as I'd like for some fancier weathering/muck effects.

Any thoughts welcome!

I'm limping towards the finish line, struggling with the flu to do any painting. I'm hoping I'll be able to finish off my mini tonight, and take photos tomorrow night. Then along comes Para with a very similar miniature to the one I'm painting, and a spectacular paintjob very much along similar lines to what I'm doing, but probably looking a fair bit better than my effort, and he describes it as "phoned in." Bah.

Sorry mate, I'd forgotten you were also doing a Plague Marine!

Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with, if your usual product is anything to go by yours will have had far more thought put into it than mine did (which was basically 'what can I paint in a couple of hours that vaguely fits the theme' )! Yours is a much cooler sculpt/pose as well, it'll certainly make my generic bolter guy look boring by comparison!

Great work so far everyone good to seem some completed entrys. Everyone else keep going (especially you Felt )

Brilliant work Modock, great NNM on the hammer.

Very cool and scary Evil-D185, I thought that was some box art to start with

and I love your entry straken619, its just really really cool and well done

I think that level of grim perfectly suits a plague marine para, several thousand years tends to leave its mark on any armour.

I've had to go away for work at short notice so missed a few bits I would have liked to finish tomorrow but having to do the final pics now. Here you go and enjoy.

I'm all done! Had to jury-rig a lightbox and use my phone camera for the photos, so apologies for the inconsistent quality and lighting.
Spoiler:

EDIT: Eek! Only just realised the 6 picture maximum - I've removed two images from the collage

Great eyes, Total!
I agree, that Freddy Krugrot is pretty awesome, MG...

Anyhow, here is my entry this month. I love these models. Despite being push-fit, they are just such cool poses. I've wanted to do the cloaked warden ever since he was first released.
The idea is that the warden is kinda the boss, with the zombie dragon, skellies and banshee all under his command.
Hope everyone likes it - I loved painting the skeletons especially.

Best of luck to everyone and see you next month!

Here are my finished pics of my Plague Marine. I must have done a decent job, as Grandfather Nurgle has seen fit to bestow a minor plague upon me in reward. Blegh.

Painting it was a completely different technique to anything I've ever done before. I used some AK Interactive weathering paints for the first time, so I was using white spirits for a start! It felt - and smelt - wrong. You get a highlight by washing the mini with the weathering paint, and then use a cotton bud and some white spirits to wipe the wash away from the areas of highlight. You can also create streaks by running a brush with just white spirits on down the area you've washed. It's amazing stuff, I really reccommend it. The ones I used were Streaking Grime and Streaking Rust.

The base was fun to make. I'll do a quick tutorial as people might find it a useful way to make nurgley swamp base. What I did was first glue a thin bit of cork to the base, along with the obligatory skulls. I then covered the cork and the base itself (but not the skulls) with white PVA glue. I added a few mustard seeds to create a bit of interest (you can see this better in the phone pic I took, posted below - they look like a small cluster of testicles in a Nurgle holy symbol.) I then dripped superglue into the PVA glue before it dried. Use liquid superglue for this rather than gel, and cheap glue at that. Don't use your £6 bottle of Gorilla superglue for this! As the superglue hits the PVA glue it starts to dry, in weird fibrous ways. I stirred this around with a cocktail stick to make the mossy effects. I tried not to cover the skulls too much. I then got a little pot of water, and dripped some superglue into it. Superglue starts to dry immediately in water. It creates a small gloopy blob, which i fished out with another cocktail stick. Using two cocktail sticks, I manipulated it into a sort of rope. I dropped this onto the base, and it became the entrails by his foot.

Painting it was pretty simple. I Primed it black, blobbed on some Dryad Bark and Death World Forest, allowing it to mix together on the base quite a bit, forming a greeny-brown base with some variation in colours. Then it was just a case of drybrushing with Deathworld Forest, another drybrush with Nurgling Green, a wash over the whole thing with Agrax Earthshade, then re-drybrushing with the Nurgling green, and a final one with a mix of Nurgling Green and Flash Gitz Yellow. The entrails were basecoated Screamer Pink and very roughly highlighted with Bugman's Glow. These got washed with the Agrax as well. I then finished it off with some Nurgles Rot and Blood For The Blood God. It sounds like a lot of steps, but each one is a matter of a few seconds. You're creating chaos so there's absolutely no point being precious about it. Leaving out the drying time of the Argax Earthshade the whole thing took about ten minutes, of which half was probably painting the skulls and the testicles. (GW's Testicle beige, with a wash of Slaanesh's Nutsack, and a highlight of Guilliman's Glorious Ballbag.)

Phone pic with better view of the base. Para, please don't include the below pic as one of my final pics, it was a WIP shot.

See previous comment about how your Plague Marine would totally overshadow mine and you had nothing to worry about! That's absolutely brilliant.

Thanks mate! It's a bit nerve wracking doing something you haven't done before, but I had some good guides and an idea of what I wanted to do. I definitely had some of your pieces in mind, as I wanted there to be a bit of implied narrative to it.

Some amazing models here this month, everyone really well done! Just throwing my pics and gotta run to a Halloween party! Presenting Hive Fleet Behemoth "Broodlord" class Genestealer Alpha-Beast. Believed to be related to the Patriarch of the Genestealer Cult of the Crimson Serpent, this specimen has been codified as "Prince" by the Magos Biologos.

My favorite villain from the Spiderman comics: Hobgoblin!

I've never used more different parts on one model:

Front part hood: Mantic Skeletons
Back part hood: Harlequin Solitaire
Face: Daughters of Khaine/Sisters of Slaughter
Front part torso: Empire Greatswords
Back part torso/cloak: Shadow Warriors
Arms: Shadow Warriors
Hands: Corpuscarii Electro-Priests
Waist/legs: Black Ark Corsairs
Glider: Hellions + Chaos Marauders shoulder pad + flail

This resulted in a lot of conversion work. After posting the WIP pic, merging everything together had only just begun. So my entry for this month has a pretty basic paintjob, (mainly basecoats and washes) because there wasn't anymore time left. I do kinda like this look, since it resembles the look of the comics back in the 90's (not much "depth" in the graphics). Hopefully you can still recognise the small red spider on the base. You know what kind of hint that is.

Well congrats to everyone who participated! I enjoyed following this contest thread but unfortunately I simply didn't have the gumption to finish the Imperial Fists Captain. Just couldn't get back into after being illegally evicted, and fired for hurting myself at work. I got a little too much on my plate and well, I have to be in the right headspace to paint. Once I get settled again I'll finish him up and share him.

Also, my lack of a decent camera and any sort of lighting box means whatever pics I do upload will be blurry and useless.

Aw, thanks! Haha, it's really not so bad. More of a nuisance than anything else. I'm pretty well back on track now, I'm more upset about not finishing the mini than anything else!

Anyways, great work folks. The slew of finished models in the last few pages make it really hard to vote!

I especially like the DG mini with the weathering paint and the Skelly diorama.

So, I actually finished Zarakynel/The Violet Heart, but when I got back home to take a pic before the 7 p.m. Eastern deadline, the paint had sort of... bubbled? away from Her.

I don't know how to explain it. It looks like a wall where water has gotten behind the paint.

No idea what the [Expletive Deleted] that's all about, but She's basically ruined.

Glad your ok Darkcloak, sounds like a hell of a week.

That Sucks Excommunicatus, What do you think might have caused it? (still welcome to enter any photos, just claim its a horror movie paint effect )

oof...that's a real shame man
hmm...did you give the resin a good wash/scrub before you painted it?...if not, the paint could have pulled away from the mould release agent coating the resin as it dried and shrunk slightly...that's the only cause I can think of...a pic might help with diagnosis though.

I'm at work, but I'll get one up when I'm home.

My internet sleuthing makes me think I probably didn't wash Her well enough, even though I gave Her two separate and lengthy baths/scrubs. The only problem with that is that She was primed for days and days without any problem before I put other paint on Her. Then, within twelve hours, She gets Leprosy.

So I really don't know.

EDIT - Hi to Leicester. I went to law school there and was a Phat Kat for three years. How goes it? Is Gift for Geeks still there?

It would be interesting to go back and count the number of starts vs. finishes in previous competitions. There are always a chunk.
