On Christmas Day, a new wave of Made to Order miniatures will appear – and they’re dressed in red and wearing big hats. What could be more appropriate for the day? They are, of course, the classic Vostroyan Firstborn Astra Militarum miniatures, and a whole range of them will be available for one week only.
(I know this is mentioned in the Xmas WD thread but I fear people who may want these really badly may not notice them without the title
I'd forgotten how terrible some of them were with the laughably oversized guns that they can barely hold, and the giant shortswords being used as bayonets.
I also hope those images aren't they way they're being sold.

Cool i thought it was as i remember seeing a couple of them on Ebay over the years, id certainly be interested in getting a platoon but, i doubt il be able to afford it this close to Xmas :(
Brilliant time of year to do a limited-time offer designed primarily to appeal to nostalgic(ie, adult) customers GW. I'm sure none of us are completely tapped out thanks to the festivities and can totally just yank a few hundred quid out of our diamond-encrusted third wallet
I’m buying these. Especially that Platoon box. I missed out when they first came out and now I’ve actually got disposable income with which to purchase! Huzzah!
With luck these were removed from sale long enough ago that the last price they were offered for (which usually seems to be what these reissues go for) will be fairly cheap
BrookM wrote: Curious myself whether or not the heavy bolter team, snipers and third officer will also be available. They say entire range, but we shall see.
Same thoughts here. I still have my original platoon pack, but its those you mentioned (plus the command squad for me) that I would like.

P.S: the article says the made to order will be for all the Vostroyan Range models ever made.
As far as I am aware, the Vostroyan range is entirely metal.

The basic infantry box of Vostroyans just left sale 6 months ago, and was 35$ for the box (as were all the metal guard, save Tallarn which was 40$ I believe).

Yeah, doing a made to order right now seems a bit...bad. If the price is right I might grab some, but otherwise I'll just have to settle with the too many unpainted guardsmen I already have (I still have a bunch of Valhallan and Kasrkin sitting in their boxes...)
ValentineGames wrote: What a genius time to pick to sell them to guarantee lower sales..........
How so?
This isn't exactly a time of year when people spend less.
No, but they're usually spending it on specific things, most of them already accounted for. Assuming someone is an adult and not a kid with well-off parents, spending is typically pre-Christmas and post-New Year(prep, then sales), and this is dropping right between the two. I guarantee if this was starting around payday at the end of January it would bring in a lot more than it will the week after Christmas day. Same if it had been at the start of December, when people could have bought it as festive treats for themselves, or directed family to buy it as a present.
ValentineGames wrote: What a genius time to pick to sell them to guarantee lower sales..........

Actually it is, big spending time was 2-4 weeks ago. The only way this gets any traction is people who were gifted money (or have too much change anyway) deciding to splurge, which would give a lot of people second thoughts given what they just spent making it harder to justify...
If they're doing the entire range, does anyone have any idea where I can find a list of what the range consists of? No luck on solo legends or google from what I can see.
Christmas Day is a huge shopping day. This is GW tapping into that. Saying it's a bad day to launch on just demonstrates a lack of knowledge about retail (not an insult btw). People spend looooaaaads online on Christmas Day itself.

From the top of my head:
Senior officer with bionic leg
Medic
Vox caster
Standard bearer
Officer with laspistol and power fist
Officer with bolt pistol and chainsword
Officer with plasma pistol and power sword
Sergeant with laspistol
6 troopers with lasgun
2 troopers with sniper rifle
Flamer
Plasma gun
Grenade launcher
Heavy bolter heavy weapons team
Mortar team heavy weapons
Lascannon heavy weapons team
Chrsitmas day is probably the busiest day of the year in regards to online sales, I think they know what they are doing here, I will have to pick up a set, I never managed to ge them all.
Rayvon wrote: Chrsitmas day is probably the busiest day of the year in regards to online sales, I think they know what they are doing here, I will have to pick up a set, I never managed to ge them all.
I highly doubt someone from the typical family at Christmas has time to do some online shopping when cooking a full Xmas dinner. Giving the kids attention with the latest cheap toy they'll sell 1 month later. While hiding the booze from grandpa and the remote from grandma who keeps trying to tune the TV in to the home service channel and cleaning up the dog puke from Rex eating a mixture of Christmas paper and raw sprouts.
I'm not joking, when did Christmas Day become the biggest day of the year for online sales? Because I do not exaggerate when I say I've literally never known anyone who was buying stuff on Christmas Day. Also; bigger than the January sales? Bigger than Black Friday? Bigger than the start of December when folk are buying loads of presents? Yeah I want to see actual hard data before I buy that one.

Since boxing day sales started a day early online.
I know that the Sun isn’t a great paper to be quoting but Boxing Day sales so start on Christmas Days and a lot of people do spend. A lot of money with online shopping on Christmas Day. For the last few years Amazon has held a Christmas Day sale. Rise of mobile phones and tablets has made online shopping on the sofa in front of Christmas TV possible.

To be fair, that article specifically notes Britain, not world wide. So it might be a Brit thing.
And ok, time to flaunt my ignorance, what IS Boxing Day actually? I had always heard of it as essentially Canadian Black Friday, but apparently its a thing in the British Isles too?
Boxing Day is the name of the national holiday held on the day after Christmas Day in the UK and a number of other ex-British Empire and Commonwealth countries.
The UK traditionally does hold some sales on this day although not all shops open. Recently this has become more of a web focused sale although some high street retailers such as Next do still have high profile in store sales as well.
Black Friday is still a lot more in the UK.
So just so people know, last year Christmas Day spending was about £900 million, they project this year to be more, so still a major day.
Black Friday online at certain points in the day had 2000 transactions processing a second.
All businesses I have worked in a way more focused about Black Friday and Jan Sales, and depending on the business their end of season amounts, most of which all top XMAS day totals.
Automatically Appended Next Post: 2017
Christmas: £895 million
Black Friday: £1.39 Billion.
Though this years final stats aren’t out yet, I think Black Friday was a drop overall. And Christmas is projected to rise.

I for one miss the times where an army list with point values was THE way to go...
among other things. I liked 7th a lot. A more now 8th require almost as much as
books as 7th needed, which was a lot.
Anyway nice to see them coming back, even for a short period of time,
the range was nice.
Id have to imagine that when things like this come back, it is something they’d look at when deciding whether to do new versions of things.
A tricky one with IG as there’s lots of uniques, but if we get to a point that they are bringing back or making more regiments, then it may put them on the list..
Glad to see this as an option for those running Guard - probably the most aesthetically "Guard" models ever done (if you go by the fluff).
I was very close on several occasions to starting a Vostroyan force - very glad I didn't, as I would have been caught mid-army when they canceled the line. I don't have funds enough to dive in and buy the army in one-go of course.
Seriously that sucks, I saw some on ebay a week or so ago, so before this was announced. A fraction compared to this for "ZOMG rare OOP metal limited" etc. items. Hopefully this won't make second hand stuff more expensive now that the official base price is higher.
Anyone able to clarify what exactly is included in the platoon? There should be 26 miniatures + 3 casualties based on the description (and base count), but there are 23 miniatures + 3 casualties in the picture.
The description specifies medic, vox-caster, 3 Sergeants (plus one unique to this set? not pictured?), 4 special weapons Guardsmen, and 2 heavy weapons teams. I guess based on this, the mystery two minis remaining are unlikely to be the rest of the command squad as they would have also been mentioned :(
Odd that the Platoon pack claims it has one officer / sergeant unique to that set when both of the officers / sergeants it has are available in the small unit packs.
Considering that the plasma gunner was £6 when it was being sold eArlier this year, I found it very, very disappointing that it’s price is now £15.
I don’t know how GW can justify it. considering that I wanted to finish off my Vostroyons in this window and now feel that I’d be a fool to buy at these prices, I can’t help but feel that GW have shot themselves in the foot here.
A great shame. I am considering writing an email to GW about it, but I don’t think that any email that I sent them would make any difference whosoever.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I mean, purchasing 6 individual plasma gunner troops would cost £90.
They seem to have gone with £15 as the minimum price for any item, which means you can grab 1 Grenade Launcher troop for £15 or buy a conmand squad for £20 which includes a grenade launcher and 4 other models.
They should have grouped the two officers into a £15 bundle and the two heavy weapons into a £15 bundle rather than £15 single purchases. Would still be painful and not great for those who only want more of a certain heavy weapon but at least more reasonable value for money.
I was tempted to pick up a Firstborn Army this weekend but whisky the squads are not too bad, the other bits are the killer. Plus very misleading description of the platoon set unless the photo is incomplete.
Picture shows what the platoon deal includes, which is the very same as it was waaaaaay back when they were first introduced alongside Cities of Death.
The description is wrong then as it claims to have a unique officer only available in that bundle but all the officers are also available in the seperate units below.
Aeneades wrote: The description is wrong then as it claims to have a unique officer only available in that bundle but all the officers are also available in the seperate units below.
Maybe they kept the description from the original release? Seem like a very GW thing to do XD
lol, it's like "here guys, vets are cheaper in points..but you will pay for it elsewhere!" I guess they really want to give Anvil Industries the business, huh?
I decided if I get some cash for Christmas I'll take a swing at 4-5 of the basic squads...I can convert the rest or go aftermarket. The basic squad cost is fine, the obvious single figures are not.
Dayum, who cares about the single model special weapon prices when the platoon set is a stupid good deal; the last few that I've seen get sold went for ~$300.
Very tempted to grab platoon, firstborn, command, snipers; that'd get me one of each heavy weapon, two of each special weapon and vox, Hell, maybe two platoon boxes...
1 officer with bolt pistol and chainsword
2 sergeants with laspistol
1 medic
1 vox caster
2 plasma guns
1 flamer
1 grenade launcher
1 mortar team
1 lascannon team
12 models with lasgun
3 casualties
Due to wording sometimes a heavy weapons team can be described as one / two models.
So no standard bearer!?
Nope that's in the £20 commander set, which was the case even in the original release.
Dam :( ive now got to re-think my purchases as i was hoping to get the big boxset and a couple of the ridiculously overpriced single packs, God knows what the prices will be like afterwards on Ebay
judgedoug wrote: Dayum, who cares about the single model special weapon prices when the platoon set is a stupid good deal
Well, I do as I want the two single sergeants.
But yes, the platoon is good and IIRC the command squad is even cheaper (in Euro) than the last time it was sold. Hum... I guess I'm in for those two (and the sergeants... hmph) even if I already have most of the models (all in fact minus the casualties and the power fist guy).
While I'm not a fan of the prices, I'm glad GW is giving players one last opportunity to purchase these. Hopefully they will do the same for all of the other OOP regiments.
I was half way through collecting these when GW pulled the plug without even a "last chance to buy" warning. I was gutted at the time as I'd usually get a squad or a couple of blisters at Christmas and Birthdays. For me it's too good a chance to pick up the bits I need to complete my infantry company before they're only available on Ebay for stupid prices.
MrMoustaffa wrote: Man those prices for the special and heavy weapons is brutal. What the hell were they thinking?
It's isn't particularly different from other old metals (including sisters) or new individual characters. Someone out there is paying those prices.
The rest of us make characters out of boxed sets or get them for essentially nothing in boxed sets.l
@Commissar Benny- I fully expect these 'last chances' to come around again. The modernized Space Hulk had four separate 'last chance' sales over the course of several years. And by sales, I mean it was put back up for sale at the list price.
These are, after all, made to order. they can just run another production cycle whenever they think demand for them is back.
I'm really not sure what I want to buy, in an ultimate first world problem.
I don't even play 40k, and apart from some Tau I got cheap last year and still haven't built, the original Vostroyan Platoon set is the only 40k thing I now own.
But (assuming basic army comp is still 1HQ and 2 troops) it would be nice to have two platoons of two man squads, plus and overall HQ set. Hence I've made one order for the £20 commander set, and the two officers (given the insane prices these go for second hand, I'll accept the crazy GW price, unlike the special weapons guys).
Then I'm not sure whether to buy another platoon, with the £20 squad to ensure I own a heavy bolter crew (might as well for another £5 on top of a sole heavy bolter crew). Then I'd have a basic army set up, and have one of the platoons with three squads, coming to £95. I could even buy a further £20 squad and a couple of sole lascannons to have a HQ, two platoons of three squads each, and a battery of three lascannons. Though that's like.... £150, which is a lot for the purposes of a collection.
Or do I just buy two £20 sets, make it a single large platoon and call it a day, since I'm not about to pick the game up any time soon?
Edit: a quick google suggests platoons have long since vanished, which does push me towards the cheaper option!
I had no idea the Vostroyans were removed in the first place. Does this mean they're gone forever after this? I'm trying to decide if I need these or not.
Future War Cultist wrote: I had no idea the Vostroyans were removed in the first place. Does this mean they're gone forever after this? I'm trying to decide if I need these or not.
They could bring them back for another Made to Order, they still have the moulds. If they do... who knows.
Well, I really like the Vostroyans. So should you if you place an order. If you're not sure, save your money for something else like gambling, alcohol and wild women. Or just waste it.

My current solution is to put a gun on their back and just have them over equipped.

If only I had of had some warning from GW I would have my Russian army and could convert some T-14's.
Did they bump up the price of one of the squads since they went up? I swear that the one with the Heavy Bolter was listed at 35usd and the one without was at 40usd, but now they are both the same. I was looking at other currencies and I swear that it was 100zl and 125zl, and now they are both 125zl (I have friend's in Poland, and the GW conversion rate for there still assumes 3zl to 1usd, plus the taxes are baked into the price - sometimes its cheaper for me to order through there and have them mail it to me).

Yes, the firstborn squad increased from $35 to $40 overnight it seems. Shame they didn't 'correct' the pricing of the single figures at the same time.
DanceOfSlaanesh wrote: I feel dirty for buying 2 of the single figures. But it was what I needed to finish out the whole range. Sorry guys for being a part of the problem.
Don’t sweat it. Sometimes it’s unavoidable.
Also, two things. If these are ‘made to order’, shouldn’t the customer be able to order the individual minis they want from a series of ‘bundles’? Something like:
“Infantry squad bundle’ (sergeant, vox caster, choice of heavy weapon, choice of special weapon, choice of 5 lasgunners)
“Heavy weapon bundle’ (choice of 3 heavy weapon teams)
“Special weapon bundle’ (choice of 3 specials and 3 lasgunners)
That would probably be too expensive to justify though.
Also, I wish that back in the day GW designed a vostroyan melta gunner, autocannon and missile launcher. I always hated how the metals never had a full range.

I caved and bought the platoon and command squad. I might need to ebay a small amount of them, but for the most part it will serve my purposes for a planned regiment that has Valhallans as the boots on the ground and Vostroyans as the kitted out veterans.
Now we just need to get a Valhallan made to order event so I can get my hands on more of them. Preferably with more warning than a few days so I can plan my spending.

Others already had made to order week before
The one from 2-3 years ago? That was mostly out of production characters, a few long out of production special / heavy weapons, and Kasrkin. The regiments themselves were still all in production at the time.

I'm more inclined to believe it was a data entry error, given that nothing else changed price, and just in case, foreign stores dont count.
The Firstborn squad went from £20.50 to £25, this would be logical if it was meant to be 25.00 in the first place, the 5 and 0 flipped.
My guess is it was to make the two squads the same price. 35usd/100zl is what the Infantry Squad and Command Squad were listed at before they were removed earlier this year. When they were put back up for made to order, they kept the infantry squad with the heavy bolter and the command squad the same price they were at before delisting, but the other one was put at 40usd/125zl. Someone probably decided they should make the squads of 10 be the same price, and the GW answer is to bump up, rather than pull down.
Ironically, the Pretorians were probably some of the most ‘guard’ minis the guard ever had. With some tweaks, I think the basic concept would still work today.

No. Maybe they don't have the moulds anymore as they weren't available for... um... two decades?
Very unlikely. They seem pretty good at keeping old moulds so apart from physical breaking up still should have them. And if they have masters metal mould price is trivial anyway
I'm about to make a folly and crack my bank account on some Vostroyans.
I think the special weapons are out of the budget, at 20 € a piece.
For the same price, the heavy weapons teams are more interesting.
I think I will grab a lot of mortars, as they were not available from a long time.
For the squads, which one do you recommend getting ?
The "Firstborn" pack with heavy bolter and regular sergeant, or the "trooper" pack with basic officer as a sergeant and more lasgun riflemen ?
What about the big expensive platoon pack ?
As an aside does anybody know the number of unique Vostroyan lasgun toting grunt sculpts there are? And are they all covered in this "Made to order" release? Thanks in advance.
I have grabbed my White Dwarf from may 2006, and I can confirm there were 6 original Vostroyans with lasguns.
They were already part of a squad box with the heavy bolter team, the flame thrower and the unique sergeant model.

Sure, they could bring them back if they want to or if the mould are just damaged. They never did though and even used Mordians in an originally Pretorian scenario (wrote by JJIIRC) in the Citadel Journal. So either they don't like them, were sued by by a British colonial club or the moulds were sold to an extremely eccentric Finnish billionaire (under the condition to never produce them again) who sunked them at the ground of a lake. Maybe there are other reasons. I don't know.

Honestly, unless you only need very specific models, the platoon set seems to be the best bet. It has both sergeants, a goodly number of troopers, one of the mortars, a lascannon, 2 plasmaguns, 1 grenade launcher, and a flamer. In terms of the heavy/special weapons, for the cost of buying them individually, you get all of them, plus the rest of the platoon.
Now, if you need specific minis, things get different. If you just need lasguns, the trooper pack is better, while if you wanted heavy bolters, the set with the heavy bolter gets you extra models for a comparatively small amount more than buying the gun on its own. 25usd per heavy bolter vs 40usd per heavy bolter + 8 more guys. The only way buying any of the special/heavy weapons individually is worth it is if you needed a lot of that specific weapon. No point in buying 5 platoons if you only need 5 mortars, unless you plan on ebaying/swap shopping the rest of the pack to recoup the money spent.
To summarize:
-If you just want a start to Vostroyans but don't mind having a few gaps - Platoon + Command Squad
-If you want lots of lasgun troops - the set with the special sergeant has the most lasgunners per dollar
-Heavy Bolters and lasgunners - the set with the heavy bolter
-Any specific gun in very large quantities - bite the bullet and buy them individually, or get multiple platoon sets and part out what you don't want.
I think if you have the money getting the following works out quite well:
1x command squad
2 x platoons
1 x firstborn squad (with just lasguns)
3 x firstborn squad (with the heavy bolter)
1 x lascannon
1 x mortar
and for flavour a couple of snipers maybe.
This gets you a couple of HQs (company commander from command squad and one of the spare sergeants), 6x infantry squads and 3 heavy weapons squads (3x lascannons, 3x heavy bolters, 3x mortars),
If you get the snipers you could make up a special weapons squad too with the few spare guardsmen and a sergeant and you end up with a few spare lasguns too, so could do a second command squad (with the medic and vox casters?). It also gives you lots of special weapons (inc 4x plasma), which are stupid expensive on their own.
This all adds up to around £330 though! I think you can get this for Cadians for around £200... and that's if you get it from GW. From your FLGS you could do it around £170.You will need to get fast attacks and a few more things for a reasonable army on top!!!! I suppose you could do it by popping in a few sentinels and maybe a single elite (like a priest) and you have a brigade detachment. That's still expensive though.
The Vostroyan ability means that lasguns and plasma guns are more powerful by adding 6" to their range and increasing rapid fire engagement range. It also benefits shorter range heavy weapons proportionally more than long range weapons, so is better for heavy bolters, rather than lascannons or mortars, but is potentially good for mortars as you will never have to move them and can hide them behind terrain.
I'd love to do it, but I have far too many other projects on the go. This would just get put into the loft for at least 6 months whilst I had the discipline to finish my existing projects. I guess I have less than one day to decide if I can be bothered with a patrol detachment maybe. Have we determined if these will be metal or resin?
I wish we had had a heads up, there was just no way I could be ready to buy these guys the week after Christmas between my travel expenses to see family and bills.
It's like they didn't want people to buy them. If we'd had even a month's notice I'd probably have 2 platoons and a command squad lined up ready to go, and that's with me hating how they did the prices. I just love the models and always wanted a small platoon or two of them. At least the platoons are a pretty good deal since the special and heavy weapon prices on their own are ridiculously high. It just feels abusive when these models were so much cheaper just this year, not to mention even further back in the past.
Whoever planned this out needs to be flogged with a sock full of Vostroyans. They've been so good about giving us heads up for releases in the past year or so, why on Earth would you do something like this out of the blue after Christmas?

I think it might be something like they want to to do it, and be able to say they did it, but they also don't want it to be too popular, because it's likely "inconvenient" for them to do this stuff. I think that it is really a fundamental disservice to do it like this, but who am I?
I just want them to do one for more Tomb Kings stuff. Which for the most part would be "easier" since the War/Necro Sphinx is a modern plastic kit, as are the Tomb Guards. But maybe they are really leery of taking away time on those machines from better selling things...
I want to start Vostroyans but dont particularly want any gaps but i have no idea on whats needed rule wise as im mainly a collector and my funds are a bit limited, I have a Heavy Bolter team and 1 single lasgunner already and was thinking about the platoon box, command squad and sniper set at least but what is the minimum squads etc needed to have a game?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I somehow put my question in your quote :/
Still on the fence with this. If I did go for a reasonably large force, lore and list wise, is one banner bearer enough for an army (in the commanders command squad) or should every command squad have one?

Very minimum is 2hq and 3 squads.
Platoon + Command Squad gets you: Company Commander, and most of 3 squads, so you would need one more officer. Probably easiest way would be grab a second infantry squad for the extra lasgunner and use the sergeant as an officer, unless you want to pay the expensive price for an individual model.
In terms of bang for your buck, 2 Platoons + 1 Command Squad will basically be good for a very basic force. You'll need to find more stuff down the line, but unless your budget is infinity dollars, it will round you out the most. 3 Platoons would let you do heavy weapons squads of all one type of heavy weapon, but at that point you are looking at 400+ dollars.
If you need more heavy bolters, the squad with the heavy bolter is your best bet. If you want 3 of every special weapon/heavy weapon, probably:
3x squad with heavy bolter
3x Platoon
1x command squad
2x snipers
1x "other officer"
That way, 2 unique officers, 4 snipers, 4 grenade launchers, a bunch of flamers, 3 of each heavy weapon, 6x plasma. Mind you, this is pushing a lot of money though.

I just ordered this, but swapped the extra snipers for the other unique Officer

If I had infinite funds and hobby time, I'd do that too. I settled for a Command Squad and a Platoon.

Seeing most popular command squad build is 4 dudes with special weapons (or 2 plus heavy weapon) you can very much use only one banner in army (especially seeing buff it provides can be also given by other characters). The 'command squad' in store is just suggestion of what this unit once was, it's much more flexible now.
I think the Goldilocks for a solid start as it sits is 3 platoons and a command squad.
You can field a solid 60 infantry in squads, give 3 of them lascannons, have a mortar HWS, a command squad with banner with special weapons of your choice, sprinkle in 6 plasma, 3 flamers, and 3 GL's to taste, and have enough spare models to make another command squad and a couple officers. You could even have the models to run a squad or 2 of kitted out vets if you run less infantry squads and give them more basic gear.
Main reason for the platoon is all the special weapons you get that are impossible to find. Vostroyan riflemen are easy to find, plasma and mortars are not. If you're going to get a single squad, buy the heavy bolter one, since it won't be hard to make the heavy bolter swappable with other weapons, it's just a shame the special weapon it comes with is a flamer, which are very common.
That said with sales tax 3 platoons is just shy of $400 for me and I just don't know if I can swing it. 2 would be fine on my budget but it would bug the snot out of me knowing I'm just shy of what I want to be able to field.

Exactly what I did, plus adding 3 of the heavy Bolter squads and the two individual sergeants.
The platoon bundle is fairly solid, and although you can do the same mode count cheaper with other IG models, they aren’t Vostroyens.
My first order actually just had the two platoons but after a couple days went by I got a little a anxious and thought I might never get a chance on these puppies again (and eBay prices are often worse and not close to this volume), so I ponied up for more. Really looking forward to their arrival and plan on fleshing our the list with some HH basilisks since they’re such an old regiment.
In the end I opted for a first order of the command squad and both officers, and a subsequent order of a platoon (to go with my 2006 one), two packs of snipers, two heavy bolter crews and a lascannon crew, and finally two further command squads.
Then I have enough for:
Overall commander & command squad
4 squads with special & heavy weapons (using the two officers as squad leaders to create some variety)
A special weapons team with 3 snipers
A heavy weapons crew (either heavy bolters or lascannons)
Any extras and spares I'll just sell off to offset the cost.
