LoER Terrain Contest: Round 30 "Double Entendre" @ 2019/08/15 13:32:57

Post by: KernelTerror

Welcome to the 30th installment of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition!

This is a terrain building competition, hopefully that's self-evident from the title...

The League's aim is to encourage our fellow gamers and model-makers to up their game while building terrain for their tabletop, be it for wargames, board games or dioramas. We encourage participants to use this thread to trade ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback.
Everyone is a winner in a League competition. Because, in the end, your entry is also your prize.

The first place winner, however, will win another great prize. They will be named a member of the League of Extraordinary Riveters, a group of dedicated artists and modellers who put great effort into having their work be extremely detailed (like being willing to glue on thousands of rivets).
The first place winner will also pick the theme for the next round, and become judge for that round. The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to your terrain project, to compete with other modellers.
The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of skill, experience, ability, age or any other attribute someone might use to divide hobbyists up.
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...
For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back! And to anyone competing for the first time, awesome! And welcome!

If you haven't taken part before, check out the previous rounds below. These are full of interesting, intriguing, entertaining and just downright awesome builds and ideas, a great source of inspiration. The judge for each round was , as should be clear from above, the winner of the previous round, with the exception of the first, set by one of the League's founders dsteinglass.

Contest # Round 29 "Food for Thought !" (Camkierhi)

Theme: Double Entendre
The challenge for contest #30 is Double Entendre. The idea is to build a piece that can possibly be transformed and used as a terrain element in at least two ways. All imaginable ways to transform your terrain piece are allowed, as long as they preserve its integrity (transforming a building into a ruin by setting it on fire would be a shame no ?). Ways of transforming your model include but are not limited to repositioning of element(s) (e.g. draw bridge), removal of elements (e.g. rooftop that gets removed to show the inside of a building), multipart modular terrain (e.g. monkeytroll's barricade or Syro_'s trenches in round 26), terrain that can be flipped and used on both sides, etc...
The more extreme/inventive/fun the change, the better !
Hope that makes sense, do not hesitate to ask for clarification or when in doubt !

Please post your key starting material and WIP pictures to this thread. WIP is the spice of life for a modeller, and your work will help inspire others, spawn discussions, or teach new techniques. Additionally I enjoy seeing them.

All scales and all game systems are welcome. The size of your piece doesn't matter and big vs small will be judged equally. The League wants you to push yourself to the next level in artistic ability and creativity, not size.

One very important thing to do, is post lots of "work in progress" pictures on this thread. This will let everyone enjoy the process of what you are creating. The members of LoER, participants in these contests, and the Dakka community as a whole love to help each other and give advice. A huge part of these competitions are to help you improve as an artist. Let people enjoy your WIPs and give suggestions to make it even more amazing. Constant updates from all of us will also keep this contest easier to find, which will allow more people to come and enjoy everyone's work, and get more people excited about joining in. (If more people join, you'll be even more proud if you win against 20 competitors rather than 2).

Do not post your finished work on this thread They should be PMed to me for judging, but you can still feel free post your finished work on your own P&M blog if you have one (just not here).

Try to take good pictures, if no one can see how good your piece is, how will we know? After all the work you put into your piece, don't slack on the pictures. Use this as a good excuse to improve your picture taking - if in doubt, ask for help, there's guides and articles here on dakka, in the wider wargaming community, and people here are generally willing to give advice - if we help others take better pictures, we can better see what they're producing in their work Lighting, focus, and cropping - 3 things to think on.

Guidelnes:

1. Talk about the competition. Make as many people know as you can. If you have a P&M blog, it's great to mention it there. I think it's a good idea to post you WIPs in your P&M blog as well as here, it gets your post count up faster, and will encourage the visitors of your blog to check out this competition. The more the merrier, and the flow of ideas, critiques and general banter increases exponentially as the number of entrants increases.

One of the best things you can do, is put the League terrain competition banner in your signature:
HTML code for the banner:
{url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/775200.page]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

2. Deadline for the contest will be October the 31st 2019 at 23:59pm GMT.

3. Scratch-builds, heavy conversions and their like are the order of the day

4. Your model should be a piece of terrain, or a diorama that includes a piece of terrain, suitable for gaming. It should not be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

5. Any scale, any setting, any game system or board game is welcome. Likewise, it could be for a non-existent game, just so long as rule 4 is accounted for. Also any size for the actual piece you're making is great as long as you can photograph it clearly.

6. Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, P&M blogs, or just the straight up pictures, etc. As said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can. For this round, you should indeed take care of illustrating how your piece can be operated/transformed

7. AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use LEDs? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this. The spirit of these competitions has always been about learning, expanding, discovering.

8. Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).

9. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.

Overview I will be judging based on how well I feel the entry captured the spirit of the contest this time around. No special points or fixed criteria for victory.

The Prize
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognized as a modeler devoted to impressive detail (or Rivets).
The warm fuzzy feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love and are impressed with your work. And as is league tradition, I will also mail you a small modeling/war game based prize as well. This will include various bits that you will hopefully find usefully in your modeling future.

Additionally, the winner of the popular vote, if different form the winner I select, will receive a similar goody bag.

Yep, I'll go another round, although I'm a middle school teacher back at work, so the scale of the ambition will not be what last entry's was. Now for a dive into the bits box to see what materials are on hand...

I'm in need of some terrain and by the grace of the God Emperor I had the incredible luck to find this wonderful little bucketlike thing in the garbage today (don't get too jealous). Makes me wonder why people throw away such treasures - aside a huge crack at the bottom, it's practically new and does not smell a lot (what is this stuff in there anyway?). What makes me most excited is that it also has a lid (not pictured).

I have a rough idea, what to make. However, I have no idea how I will do it and if it will work out all. I'm not a terrain maker. Therefore, I'd like to partake.

Have extremely rough idea. Im going to try build a chaosy tower with a bell at the top. The bell im using is left overs from GUO model. This picture is just the base im gong to use that i cut from the pink cardboard. And the wooden sticks i dont know what im going to do yet, i have a whole bag of them.

EDIT - Its such a rough idea i'm not sure i will succeed in doing this, but i am trying lol.

I cant figure out what kind of tower design to try and build... jesus this is hard. Any good ideas for a bell tower that would suit 40k Chaos?

I had a idea, but im scrapping it and re thinking what to do. So ill have to post another starting picture when i figure this out.

Depends on the god(s) you wish it to be dedicated to. Nurgle surely likes plague bells, the tower could be oozing with slime and have spore emitting pustules and stuff. It could also be a Khorne tower with a blood waterfall, meat grinder and corpse parts hanging down on chains. Or some tower of babel chaos tower dedicated to Tzeentch with eyes and vultures.

Post by: StormX

Well im just thinking what the main structure of the tower would look like, not really thinking about any effects at the moment, or not sure if i would be adding any effects, but just some chaos symbols and maybe lots of spikes or something.

Any way i have an idea now so ill see how it goes. The sides of it will be similar to this picture but the roof will be diffrent and obviously the bell has to be visible so yeah, so im only going to try copy the side walls in this picture and figure out how to do every thing else after.

Thank you.

I had to post that picture to show you im not copying the arches you are doing Max lol. Just so happens we both are doing some thing with arches thats all, promise im not copying . But yeah i cant even fething draw a simple arch so this might not even happen.

In the grimdark architecture of the 41st millennium there are only gothic arches.

So, the more arches the better, Stormatious. Have fun building.

Finally got some thing easier to cut and work with other then that gakky cardboard i was using. A nice big sheet of this foam stuff with smooth cardboard surface, very easy to cut aswell, so now i can finally start this thing properly.

Went to so many shops looking for some thing to use, the last shop i was lucky and it had it.

I cut out the interior of the arches. Almost done I guess. But maybe it might benefit from some putty to look 3D.

So I removed a few arches to add putty and glue them back on. The 'putty' or air drying modelling material is an impulse buy item I picked up for 2 € per pound quite some time ago for possible terrain making. I think the cute little elephant is to blame.

Three arches somewhat done. This 'putty' is not easy to work with, because it has lots of fibres. It seems to be a mixture between ground paper, elmers glue and maybe fine saw dust. Tastes as bad as it sounds. Shrinks a little while drying. Bad thing is it also deforms a little while drying. The only thing I like about it is that the end product is like light wood, it tears more under pressure instead of cracking.

Post by: StormX

Ok, after some thought how to do this i finally figured out how to make these 5 arches almost 100% accurately measured on all areas ( and i couldn't figure out how to cut with the blade i had accuratly )... it took me for ever because the first time i did it ( you can see by picture they were originally a bit larger ), but the little blade i was using kept on fething every thing up and making the edges un even ( especially the top arches ). So i made them all slightly smaller and went about it waaaaaaay slower and cut it in a more "surgical" type of manner. So it took me for ever to do just these 5 arches lol. If i had a machine or tool that could cut them all at the same time then this would be waaaay easier lol.

As you can see from the hexagon shape i already failed this the first time so removed them. These new arches should be good enough i hope.

EDIT - I had to draw these shapes each individually since i had nothing to draw around. And i could not use the first board as a stencil because the material is too soft making it too hard to accuratly draw around.

EDIT - I should note im terrible at maths and obviously at measuring. Cant remember the last time in my life i ever measured some thing.

Started to fill gaps, and have smeared this white stuff to try create a concrete effect. No pre plan for this except for the walls from that picture, so im building it / desinging at the same time. Im thinking of adding smaller arches in the middle near the top, then put the bell inside of that. Then ill decorate things and cover up them archers n stuff. I think thats the plan any way, not sure. The door will be on the opposite side of the building, and im thinking of some design plans for the front to make it eye catching.

A couple of months ago I attempted one of these competitions but got completely buried in uni assessment before I could finish. So, seeing as it's [i]that[i] time of semester again, I figured I should enter something . I've been a little less ambitious this time, and I have it mostly planned out, so I should be able to get it done.

I'm entering a modular townhouse/ inn for D&D (and maybe LOTR/ AOS), consisting of two 'buildings' and two roofs. The buildings can be separate with roofs, to make two houses, or can be stacked to make an inn, or large townhouse. I've gotten a start on the walls of one of the buildings, and have built the structure for one of the roofs:

still trying to figure out images, so hopefully they worked

Hey all, sorry I ghosted all of you who participated in the last comp...my work life intensified by about 300% and had some home improvement projects take priority...

Would anyone mind if I picked up where I left off on my last project...as it actually fits this contest theme fairly well...and I'm not very far along.

Mainly I just want the extra motivation to get it done.

If not, I don't want to start another project until I get this completed.

Thanks!

That's some top notch masonry, Fango!

Meanwhile I started to make some gimmicks to add to the arches: a double headed eagle from a piece of terrain and fleurs from a borrowed silver pendant.

Also started making a few simple molds of the arches, because I have a lot of this rubbish material left and will try to make something useful with it.

It doesn't take details very well, but it should be ok for an ancient weathered grave.

Next the arches will be glued to the little plastic bucket.

Even more arches ! Looking good Max Moray ! I recognize the greenstuffworld blue molds, but what are the clear white ones you are using for the arches ?

@Fango : that is absolutely fine by me, I remember your project from last round and it was looking very promising, would be a shame if it went to waste. To be fair to the competition, I will take that aspect into consideration in the final selection, but rest assure that it does not disqualify you either.

That's also thermoplastic. It's sold as Oyumaru in a lot of colors. The blue one is sold by Greenstuffworld as Blue Stuff. Molding properties of all those colors are the same, but when making simple press moulds the clear variety makes it easier to see how good the mould is filled.

In the meantime I've glued the arches to the bucket and am starting with some detailling such as adding of cracks, fixing casting issues.

I'll join this, I've got a backlog of terrain ideas that I need some motivation to finish.

Currently building terrain for Mordheim, and I'll be building this piece based on a sketch.

The plan is to make the piece modular with the building, ruined arch, and bridge all as standalone pieces that can be combined to the original vision or used separately. Hope that fits the criteria of the contest well enough.
Here's the initial foam structures ready to be built upon. I had to deviate from the original design a bit because I don't want the buildings to be too tall.

That looks really interesting Thumpingmonkey, keen to see the finished product.

I've made some more progress on the house, but it's been going pretty slowly as I've got a lot of uni work right now.

Couple of questions about the current design:
- should I fill in the gaps between where the planks meet? It's not super noticeable, and my players certainly wouldn't care, but not sure about it.
- Should I have flat shingles on the roof or should they sag in the middle? I could leave the roof how it is and just glue on some cardboard strips, or I could put another sheet of card over the top.

Anyway, here's some piccies:

Looks good! I'd fill the gaps even if it doesn't matter for gaming. For the shingles personally I like the old wood shingle look on such buildings, e.g. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ac/dc/8f/acdc8fc66f49a587bbd37f96b7efdf2e.jpg

Playing war games, on a globe, it’s a bit crazy, all the models will have to have magnets on their bases to stop them falling off, but’s that’s ok. It’s sticking on all the metal and iron ore that will be the time consuming part, and the painting. I’ve begun this all a bit in media res. I think the photos will explain better.

Had to cut these triangles using cheap scissors while they were all super-glued together, so they kept coming apart every time i tried to cut through the whole "sheet" of glued sticks. Any way i have no idea what i'm doing, i have almost thrown this away, but i decided if i try hard enough i can make it look like some thing reasonable. Any way not sure about where i'm going to put the bell and might have to leave that out and just make a tower with no bell.

Any way still might throw this away if i cant make it look decent so ill just show what it looks like at the moment. So i might have to make a "bell tower" next time and just do a tower.

So i dont know what im doing still, only trying to do a similar style roof as that picture and similar walls, but its going to look completely different (partly because im such a fething noob at this, and because i have a idea in how it will look completely different, but i dont really know what, just a very rough idea ).

Great work, everyone! You've all got a good lead on me, but I think I've got an idea and enough time to execute it. I'm planning to build some more 6"x12" base sections that will align with each other and the ones I built last time. I've got some plastic meat trays from the butcher counter, some twist-off tops from my kids' squeezy pouches, and some wire mesh, so I'm going to build some covered vent fans from an underground facility of some kind. I'm tempted to try LEDs in the recessed chamber under the mesh, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

I'm almost done painting my Sororitas army... tanks are done, infantry is done, mainly just Celestine and a few bases to go. I should wrap that this weekend and I'll post some pics of the materials before I get started. Great progress, y'all!

So, I signed up for this competition, then couldn't think of anything that fit the theme. Then, when inspiration did hit, I neglected to take WIP photos until yesterday. Oops. Anyway:

The caves are, well, caves meant to go in reptile habitats. I picked up the black one well over a decade ago, and the brown one probably three years ago. I've tried plonking them down on the table a couple of times, but they don't really blend in with the terrain I have. Since I lack any non-urban elevating terrain, I decided to integrate the caves into a couple of hills. After cutting and shaping the insulation foam, I cut out a place to insert the caves. I then covered the whole thing with drywall putty, and since taking this photo have sanded down the rough spots and filled in a few more gaps. These probably won't be mind-blowing centerpieces, but they will fill a need on my table, so that's good enough for me.

That round is shaping up quite nice I'd say, glad to see that !

Welcome Aboard GathersNo, that spheric terrain project promises to be quite crazy, In a good way. Really looking forward to seeing where you take this !

@Stomatious, great progress , these planks should look great once painted ! I'm sure you'll figure out a way to fit the last bits properly.

Glad to see you joining in too @MacPhail, that material list sounds promising !

Great pick these caves @JoshInJapan, should end up nicely integrated to the hills and definitely usable !

Gave it a rough paintjob before adding more stuff.

When I helped a friend with gardening I found these strange things attached to some plants (are apparently called roots). Also got some foliage from the model train supply. Both will be used for more decoration.

Finally getting a materials pic... I have some scrounging left to do, and there will be lots of pink foam and card (and maybe some LEDs?). But these are the core materials.

Edit: I got a rough prototype tacked together. I'll have enough parts to do five of these, although I may look at something other than propellers for some. I'll mount them singly or doubly to foam bases and use the same modular approach as last time (not sure about the magnets, though). Now that I've seen it, I think the LEDs will be critical... the recessed interior will be too dark otherwise, no matter what I find to stick in there. To have any real visual depth, I'll have to light it from within.

So, I'm working at wrapping a couple of other things, but will jump this project into the queue to try to participate in this next contest. Here's my materials pic (partial) for a Forward Space Base (think: hasty airfield in the World War II era) Multi-purpose Platform:

The platform will support a variety of different 'mini-dioramas' so that it can be used as either:

a) A Low Orbit Defensive Anti-Ship Cannon
b) Close-In Spaceport Defense
c) Tower/Command & Control
d) Fueling Center
e) Spaceport Electrical Power Generation
f) Possibly other things

Most of these lend themselves to the category of 'Engagement & Targeting, Multi-purpose Environment' (E.A.T.M.E.) facility.

I want that LOER sig file at the bottom of my page.

MacPhail: Looks very promising already.

Meer_Cat: This could earn you the batch. Great idea.

Started decorating the lid of my bucket. I intend to use the shrine/sanctuary/tomb with the lid as a base for the board and with the lid on top (as a platform) for the display to place special characters.

Update, i have been away so couldn't update.

I will be painting it very soon.

The door - Made out of a plastic container, i had to cut each individual line on the doors, first with a ruler and blade, then free handed it going over each line with out a ruler ( was easy because the blade fell in to the previous slot i created using a ruler.

Twisted Metal - Wire's that i twisted together then super glued

Walls - Foam

Wall texture - modeling putty stuff that i smeared every where.

Bricks - Foam

Roof = Wood sticks

Some updates:

The Column portion of the build was mounted on an MDF base and textured with a dremel, before adding all of the foam brickwork and rubble.

The House was also bricked, and walled with balsa and foamcore.

The Bridge was built from a balsa base with toothpicks as struts, planked with coffee stirrers. With the railings added, the Bridge is pretty much finished, save for some extra embellishments I may add.

I was having a bit of trouble deciding how to tackle the second floor of the House, finding a balance between playability and making it look good. I decided to bite the bullet and really get into the spirit of the competition by making the second floor completely removable (the roof will also be removable whenever I get to it). Still lots of work to go.

Lots of great ideas and work in this thread so far, keep it up everyone!

This is for the current League of Extraordinary Riveters competition. It's the beginning of an Engagement and Targeting Multiple Environment (E.A.T.M.E.) platform for hasty spaceport defense during orbital and airborne insertions.

The main platform itself will be fabricated from some leftover ceiling fan parts and bits of CD/DVD boxes:

Conveniently, the central spindle simply unthreads from the base:

I need to fasten two of these together to form the fighting platform, once complete all of the weapons and other systems will be mounted on old CDs (mostly came in the mail as advertisements, I use them for painting palettes) and can be swapped in and out based on what you want/need- thus fulfilling the Double Entendre requirement for the contest- a piece of terrain that can be converted over by design to fill more than one function:

The posts are for the two halves to line up and make it easier on the glue and/or greenstuff to hold things.

More follows soonest.

Thumpingbear: those bricks look phantastic!

WIP of the Statue of Sister Leonore on her stone coffin. Once finished, this will be the centerpiece of the interior of my little sanctuary. It can also be used seperate from the rest as an objective marker.

Here's tonight's work:

The plastic 'pegs' made from styrene channel and fixed in place with superglue broke off, so I cut strips from an AARP advertisement card and fixed them in place with JB Weld:

I've since added the top plate to it, also fixed in place with JB Weld, but it's drying and has a ton of books on it to keep the seam closed tight, so a picture of that tomorrow, I think.

I used machine screws to fasten the ceiling light sem to its base:

And countersunk the screw heads so that if I ever get to go someplace to game, they won't scratch up someone's nice table. I have some felt lying around, I'l probably cover the bottom of the base with that, just to be fussy:

Here's the central column that holds the fighting platform up, fitted into place but not glued/epoxied/welded/etc yet:

And, this is the League of Extraordinary Riveters, so here's some riveting; black 1mm sequins on flat black metal- please just shoot me now. Actually, I think they came out kind of okay, and there are many more to emplace. I found that I couldn't pick them up and put them down so that the faceted side showed, I had to flip them and put them down so that the flat side was up- it was the only way I could grab them with tweezers:

And through the magic of close-up photography, I see at least one rivet that needs to be re-stuck down!

More follows soonest.

Post by: MacPhail

Excellent work, everyone! I feel the pain on those rivets, believe me.

I think my scheme for the "double entendre" will work out... the two main layouts I had imagined will be possible with the pieces I've designed. One will represent big broad avenues suited for vehicle traffic (and easily cluttered with scatter terrain, which I'll hopefully have time to make), and the other will feature tight little corridors suitable only for infantry for some brutal CQC.

I'm a little torn on how to layout the "guts" of each chamber... I had originally imagined symmetry, but now I'm considering just random piles of space junk. More interestingly, I just ordered $50 worth of LEDs, batteries, and wiring from Amazon, despite having no idea what to do with them. Let the tutorials begin!

Post by: Thumpingbear

Max Moray: Thanks, was a real pain to put em all on, but the end effect is worth it!

Some more updates:

The House has been detailed with wood trim, along with the shingled roof.

As previously stated, the second floor and roof are removable. I may magnetize the second floor, as it's not quite as snug as the roof.

The Column's double platforms were installed - I was going for a very rickety, badly designed look, and I'm quite happy with it. The small building on it (which I've affectionately dubbed The Outhouse) was also glued on.

Here's a group shot with an unfinished Dwarf for scale, I think I'm getting pretty close to my original concept. The Bridge was also magnetized, so it's very stable when placed.

Still a bit more construction to go, but I'm hoping to start painting by next weekend.

Wow, I'm feeling pretty outclassed here. I sanded down the filler, applied texture, and started painting the hills (only one photo of this stage, sorry):

I forgot to turn off the flash on my phone, so it looks white rather than the earthtones it is in real life. I then added some patches of flock:

Once the glue is dry (which is to say, tomorrow), I'll scrape off some of the flock and add some foliage.

LoER Terrain Contest: Round 30 "Double Entendre" @ 2019/10/15 23:26:05

Post by: Meer_Cat

Hi Kernal- life is so crazy right now, if I make it in two weeks great, if not, there's no telling when- don't extend the deadline for me.

As for the E.A.T.M.E., the tower base is mostly done(needs some gubbins attached) and the base of what will be a spiral metal stair up to the fighting platform is done.

The 'ship-killer' laser cannon is starting to come together too. We have a lady at church who can paint the inside of a Christmas ornament by working the brush through the small hole where the hanger attaches at the neck of the ball- it's amazing. I have a _much_ larger opening to work with and want to paint some 'lightning in the bottle' if I can manage to represent that titanic forces waiting to be aimed an unleashed on a low-orbit warship:

These bits and bobs are to make the stairway and two of the inter-changeable platforms to allow the tower to provide a multitude of functions, depending on what the game calls for:

More follows soonest.

Post by: MacPhail

I'm a little panicked at how far behind I feel... no real progress since I finished cutting and cleaning all my materials. No paint so far, not even undercoats, although once I get going it should go quickly as there's very little detail work. And then there's the big hurdle... figuring this stuff out:

That said, I'm not looking for an extension... nothing motivates quite like a deadline, so I'll cut whatever corners I have to and get something over the line before the clock winds down.

Great progress gentlemen, allright leaving the deadline as is for the moment then, good luck in the last straight !

Congrats on being the first finished Josh, PM well received. No a big deal, but would you mind however editing your post to remove the picture ? I did not make these, but I think the LoER rules states that pictures of the finished entries are to be saved for the final voting thread/post, and not to be displayed in this thread before that (main idea is to not intimidate other entrants, or let the judge be able to discover all entries at once I think...). Post on any other thread such as your blog are of course perfectly fine.

Well, I got everything undecorated and started figuring out the wiring for the LEDs, but I've realized that with just a few weeknights til the deadline I'd have to make some serious compromises on my original concept, and for the work I've put in already I'm not really willing to do that. Regrettably, then, I'll bow out for this cycle and try again in the future. Thanks to all for the support and inspiration and apologies for the late bailout... Sorry Kernel, I'm going to have to drop out. I didn't have much time to model these past few weeks because of Life (known and unforecast incidents) and much of what time I had was sucked up trying to make a defective Ender-3 Pro 3d printer work. Incredibly frustrating working with Creality to troubleshoot and getting the same "try adjusting this setting in your slicer" over and over again. I'd use it as a boat anchor except it's too light.

An extension won't help me, I'm afraid. No time for the foreseeable future.

Time is up, after several weeks of buildings for the entrants and a few heartbreaking days of choosing for me, it is time to close round 30 of the LoER challenge. Congrats to all the entrants, finishers or not, It was very inspiring to follow and I'll probably end up stealing many ideas from here. Don't feel bad if you did not finished, I know how the end of summer and the months of september october can be hard on hobby time. I still hope to see the finished pieces some day, do PM when they are !

All four completed pieces had a legit claim at the title, end perfectly fitted the topic, here they are in no particular order :

MacPhail

MacPhail produced a series of five mechanical blocks made out of plastic wrapping, metal grills and many inside components. Each element can be lit with lets of different colours, and recombined in different positions for usability. I am very fond of MacPhail's signature rust and weathering technique, working perfectly well in that industrial settings. Each pod has internal mechanics made of various plastic bits. I identified different type of caps, parts of paint bottles, all of them integrating well in a complex machine. These pods will also integrate perfectly with your previous entry, I hope your rust city will keep growing in the future.

Rest of the entry :
MacPhail wrote:My claim to "double entendre" is two-fold... wide spacing for boulevards passable by heavy armor vs. tight corridors only accessible to infantry, and lights-off vs. lights on. I chose pics that show the two different spacings, pics that show with and without lights, and a couple of detail shots. I also have all the top-down and all-sides varieties...

Spoiler:
Lights off, arrayed in a series of tight, winding corridors:

Wide spacing to allow vehicle traffic:

Top view showing contrast of blue and amber:

Detail of one of the interiors (white LEDs):

Detail of paint and weathering:

Thumpingbear

Thumpingbear built a Mordheim style set of buildings, out of tiny planks, foam gravel, and various additional bits. In contains and house, stairs, a bridge, a cabin with a chain. It can be disassembled in 4 for transportation, or separate use as distinct terrain feature. The entry perfectly captures the Mordheim vibe and many skirmishes can easily be imagined just by looking at the piece. Some character will definitely end up hanged at that chain, while another may decide to blow up the bridge (making its removal very convenient).

Rest of the entry :
Spoiler:

JoshInJapan

Josh built to hills based around some fish tank cavern rocks, and hand building all the rest of the pieces, adding space for models to take position, plants weeds and additional rocks. I am quite impressed with how integrated the final entry ends up looking, and would definitely not be out of place on a shelf in a wargaming store. The shape of the final pieces makes them easy to integrate on a table, while keeping the possibility of hiding a few models inside the cave for more complexes setups.

Rest of the entry :
Spoiler:

Max Moray

Max Moray built a Mausoleum for his Sister of Battle army. Build around a plastic bucket, that piece is extremely rich with handmade sculpture and tiny details, with almost no part of it left bare. The chosen color scheme, and the addition of foliage and red flowers completes the piece perfectly, making it cohesive with Max's Sister of Battle army. The Mausoleum can also be split into different elements (using the statue as an objective marker) or inverting the floor for a roof. I must also acknowledge the quality of the pictures, with perfectly chosen backdrop and ground.

Rest of the entry :

Spoiler:

Max Moray wrote:

"The Mausoleum of Sister Leonore: A modular piece of terrain I made for the 30th installment of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition on Dakka Dakka. Per rules of this round the terrain piece has to have several options (motto: "Double Entendre"). Mine can be used as a standard terrain piece with a base holding the rockcrete coffin and statue inside. Alternatively the base can be used as a roof, e.g. for display purposes. In addition, the statue may serve as an objective marker fiercely held and defended by the Sisters of the Order of the Cleansing Blade. I’d like to build a ‘armies on parade’ display board for the Order of the Cleansing Blade next year (although I will never partake in the official event due to a lot of 3rd party stuff). This piece could be the start."

Four to choose from, but I had to pick one.

ThumpingBear, you are the winner of Round 30 of the LoER Competition as well the dakka's public voting.

When I went back through this thread to pick a winner, I falsely remembered that you based your work from official Mordheim Artwork, then re-discovered your post, and your self made art :

On top of the qualities I mentioned above, this, imho, adds to the power of your piece by capturing's mordheim's misty, decayed, ruined and dark atmosphere with your own design.
You may now proudly bear (pun intended) the LoER's banner in signature, and are now in charge of organizing round 31. You may also, if you wish, PM me your postal address, I'll send a modest bag of modeling supply as an additional prize.

Kudos to all of you fellows, hope to see you in Round 31 !

Thank you all very much! And well done everyone for building your pieces, I think the best prize we all receive is having new terrain to play with (at least it is for me!).
Thanks again to Kernel for hosting.

The next round will be announced on Jan 1 for both a fresh start in the New Year and to let everyone celebrate the holidays. See y'all in the next round!
