Welcome all to the 60th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters. This is the final month of the 2019/20 rotation, and the league table is still tight, so this is your last chance to pull out all the stops and score some vital last minute points!
This month, the theme is “Final Boss.” Whether a Big Bad Evil Guy or whatever the Good Guy equivalent of that is, your entry should represent the biggest, toughest combatants your collection can muster, likely to be the last foe to face before they are defeated.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in. The overall winner of the League for this year will receive a set of Dakka Dice.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of February and will end at midnight UK time on the 29th of February. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Hmm, do I do kharn, or calas typhon this month? Kharn was my initial choice, but then typhon was like the final boss mortarion had to face to save his legion from nurgle. (yeah I just finished buried dagger)
My entry for final boss is the new chaos sorcerer. He is part of the Black Legion army I’ve been working on. Good luck everyone, always inspiring to see finished projects.
Posting to sub - waiting on my mum posting the last of my models from her house and my bitz supplier restocking. For a change I think I'll NOT be doing a damn Blood Raven
This is going to be an amazing round... I dig all of these selections. Nevelon, I had one of those when my collection was rattling around in a K-Mart tackle box!
Here's the new Boss: The Canoness from the Sororitas Army Box. Note the "just got errata'd into legality today" plasma pistol. I'm thinking she needs a head swap, rod-for-gun swap, and a mean old chainsword in place of the power sword. Maybe do something about those dangly censers, too. If you've played or played against a Bloody Rose Canoness with the relic chainsword Beneficence you know she's a 45-point blender, so I definitely need to stop proxying her and get on with building these new plastics!
Also, which outrageously-oversized grimdark chainsword gets to be Beneficence? Sororitas-sized, Militarum-sized, Astartes-sized, or which-model-even-had-a-massive-chainsword-that-says-REPENT-sized?
I have definitely picked a big project for this one but I am pretty excited to try and complete this one as I have been wanting to paint it for a while!
I was stuck between the Avatar of Kane or The Balrog decided on the latter with a whip I found from an older model - fully Metal model - Half primed
Also, which outrageously-oversized grimdark chainsword gets to be Beneficence? Sororitas-sized, Militarum-sized, Astartes-sized, or which-model-even-had-a-massive-chainsword-that-says-REPENT-sized?

How you you turn down the one that says “repent”? My only concern is that if you are going to keep the pose, you either need to get one the right length, or add to the base. Either raise her up, or find a rock/heretic for her to be resting the blade on. Depending if it’s too short/long.
Annnddd my bitz reseller did restock today but not what I needed :/. Gonna have to hope they put a shift in next week or I don't think I'll be able to do what I planned
Some really cool entries already hitting the page!
Totally-generic-shield-captain-and-absolutely-not -Constantin Valdor for my Long War Doubles Custodes for Adepticon. I'm trying to grind through this army quickly as I don't have a lot of time between now and Adepticon (51 days) and I have far too much on my plate, so this'll have to be a quick one.
I will once again attempt to join one of these challenges to motivate me to get some painting done. I will be attempting to paint Lelith Hesperax, but I haven't been able to get a start on her yet due to the very damp weather. I've only just started building my Wych Cult army, and I'm still kind of deciding on a colour scheme. At the moment I'm set on a sort of retro style with glossy black, purple and green.
Anyway, here's my proof, in all of it's finecast glory (actually my first finecast model, I can see why finecast isn't popular)
Image is sideways again, I'll see what I can do for next time

I started working on the Sanguinor model this afternoon... I find it really easy to work with but you have to do more work! Filling tiny air bubbles and scraping supports off is tedious.
As the dragons a rather simple sculpt to paint (it's just big) I've decided to do the challengers for the boss fight a stereotypical RPG group as well.
Made some good progress this weekend, almost finished the blue and nearly finished base coating the other colours. As always feedback is very much welcome and appreciated.
Thanks
After some time thinking and looking through my options, I figured it was time to give my Helbrute some attention! I think he would do good as a Final Boss!
That's amazing. Are those the bigger claws from the Daemonettes/Seekers boxes?
Please don't be surprised to see me rip this off entirely in the coming months.
Thanks Excommunicatus. Yeah, those are claws from the Daemonettes or Seekers, can't remember which (it was made a long time ago now). Look forward to seeing your version in a future challenge
Current WIP. Tried to do a zenithal undercoat and I’m not sure if I like how it turned out on the skin. Still have a ways to go but definitely ahead of schedule.
Guess I might as well try to get something going this month. Better late than never and all that. Here's my proof:
I figure it fits the theme because once you fight your way past the Repentia, you've got to fight the boss, the Repentia Superior, or "Whip Lady".
It is indeed from a custom sheet, one of those impulse buys on Ebay that you just have to buy and never see again. I missed out on the FW ones.
I was looking for the BA shoulder pads with the winged droplet, sort of like the retro transfers I'm sure it's the deathwatch pads but they get expensive when you buy loads so also noticed these etches and thought they looked like the 2nd ed BA icon

Thanks guys! It's been really enjoyable to paint so far, probably the most fun I've had painting something since the Imperial Knight I painted. I've spent the evening repainting his giant teeth/mandibles as I wasn't happy with the colour I used first time round. Even that, painting a bit I had already put a load of time into before, was pretty satisfying.
Yours is looking great too, Deadshot. The white looks great, and the colour choices are really good. Don't forget to paint the guts though! You've got them white at the moment. My guts recipe - Screamer pink, highlight up with Bugmans Glow, Cadian Fleshtone, and Rakarth Flesh, then a wash of Coelia Greenshade. Then you can add a bit of Nurgle's Rot.
Not necessarily final pics as they're a little rough, but I'm in this month with Count Dooku. Star Wars did pretty well for me last month, hopefully I can carry that forward!
Fairly last minute entry for me!
Here's my proof pic:
The final boss is emerging off the assembly line.
It is a 3D printed monster from a recent kickstarter I backed. Rawr.
I'm about 95% finished with calas, but I've been distracted painting middle earth stuff and now have no motivation to finish. Going to have to suck it up and power through at some point this week.

I know what you mean, painting those organic shapes and creatures has always been the most fun part for me! I'm really looking forward to the final result!
lso thanks for the feedback and the guts recipe! I've got a plan for the guts later on but it sounds like such a cool outcome I'm tempted to abandon mine!

Any thoughts welcome!
Excellent as always Para! Glad to see you are feeling better as well! Really nice model and I'm extremely impressed with the subtle OSL from the lightsabre! I guess the temptation with OSL, especially lightsabers, is to make it intense and bright but your finish looks fantastic!
Jjohnso11 wrote:Here are the finished photos. Tried to do two new things this month - zenithal undercoat and animal print.
Great job Jjohnso! The animal print is looking really fab, especially for a first try and while I'm no expert on zenithal, my eye is drawn very much to his face and shoulders and away from his base so I think you've done a good job!
Edit: see later post for final pics
Morgraur Rashaar finished. As always feedback is very much welcome and appreciated. Good entries coming in from everyone so going to be another tough month when it comes to deciding who gets the vote.

Nice. I'd make the red more vibrant though.. Get some orange tones into it to compliment the blues. Maybe use orange as a spot colour in the eyes too
Finished my project tonight! Really fun painting something that isn't red! Not quite the Swarmlord I hoped to be doing but still a great fun project! Better pics later in the week!
Some great models being entered this month! I love that Chaos Lord!
I've been hammered at work and at home, so this is a really late start for the project I have in mind for this month.

For those worried about time, I’ve arranged for a whole extra Saturday to be added to the month this year, so that should give everyone a little more breathing room over the last few years. Your calendars should already be updated.
(Always nice when leap-years give us an extra Saturday. We need more of those)
Edit: final pics
Thank's again for the feedback QAR, is this along the lines of what you had in mind? I have redone the edging with fire dragon bright rather than pink and used some red ink to tint the overall shade closer to orange.
Feedback also welcome from anyone else that has any ideas too.
As a reminder to anyone who's joined us in the last year, March will be the traditional Space Marine round to kick off the nee challenge rotation for Year 6.
Which might actually be tricky for me, as I find myself in the unprecedented (for me) position of not having one readily on hand to paint... Shocking!

Perfect, that means I can round of my gunslinger trilogy with Cypher who is waiting for paint since his Gathering Storm release.
And here are my entry pics, I'm not to happy with his face, but I'm sure his mother wasn't either, so that's that Loved doing the cape and will try to get better at wrinkled leather in the future.

Those look amazing guys! Well done on awesome paintjobs!

I was anxiously checking the forum for the new poll subject However, I think my birthday money has me all prepped for next month!
So the second and last of the zoats in my collection. Overall more happy with him then the first. Like the way the body turned out. While contrast paint over a pale blue, with some spot shades and highlights. Not happy with the gun. Wanted a chitanous look, but without the full gloss I did on the first guy. In hindsight, I should have punched up more contrast with highlights before the blank ink glaze. Ended up a little flat. Not happy with the face, but a lot of that is a sculpt.
Anyway, he can join his brother lurking in the obscure shelf with the one homagaunt and half dozen genestealers.
I'm 99% sure I won't finish Syll'Esske/The Bogatyr in time. Wasn't expecting to work this week so I have procrastinated, then I got called in for fifteen hours today and booked on shifts Friday and Saturday that will likely be a similar length.
lots of great stuff in here already! After quite a long break from the hobby I suddenly had the urge again to do some conversions, sculpting and albeit a bit less so, also painting. So I hopped on here to check out what the current painiting challenge was, as that is always a great way to narrow down what to do. I did find a project I liked, defacing loyalist as always and got to work on it.
So this is my WIP shot of a new chaos warrior, not to fancy on the conversion end but I still like it. I finished painting him last night and will upload some painted pictures later today when the light is a bit better.
Awesome entries peeps, it's shaping up to be a good one this month.
And I've actually managed to finish! YEET!
However, although the photos were taken last night by my lovely wife with her fancy-shmancy DSLR, I couldn't be bothered to transfer them to the laptop... So that's tonight's job!
First impression: tremendous work, everyone, with more to come I'm sure. I am in awe as always.
Here's a Canoness of the Bloody Rose wielding the relic chainsword Beneficence. I've played her twice and she is a Boss in every sense, taking on Intercessors in one game and Necron Warrior mobs in another. I swapped the head, scratch built an arm, swapped both weapons, simplified the cape, and customized the base. I'm pleased overall, with some aspects more than others, and looking forward to any feedback anyone can offer.
Even more, I'm excited to pore over this thread! Well done, everyone!
All the entries are looking great this month! Unfortunately time escaped me this month due to various unexpected trips away and therefor the balrog has just been far too big to finish!
Hoping to complete a challenge every month for the following year though, definitely need to pick some better sized models to start with!
Okay, so who the hell brought a T-Rex!? That is freaking awesome and that it is going to be used in your D&D campaign only makes it more so.
QAR's enry is great as always and I really love your conversion work, Pneumo - the proportions are fantastic. I always reckon that if you can't tell that it's a conversion then you've done a good job!
The same can be said for Elnibbus' work - an interesting model, well painted - well done.
Anyhow, this month was a bit of a rush for me but I am happy with what I have got done whilst getting so hammered at work and at home -next month, I think I need something small!
When I was putting her together, I saw that she had extra arms, so I decided - why not use them? I figure a wraith construct could be made any-which-way....
Bit late to post, but was worried I couldn't keep momentum without switching again--finished last night, so guess I did. Doing a Deep cuts copper dragon for D&D.
Proof pic from the start of the month:
And finished on my desk early this morning (and a close up from today):
Some nice entries this month, going to be fun looking at them all in the voting thread.
Finally, she's finished...Szalamandra aka Sally, one of my favourite models of Infinity. I enjoyed painting her, really cool sculpt.
I pushed myself quite alot with various freehands, OSL, battle damage and even tried to do some factory toxic waste.
Well another dakka season is over...it was a great run.
Here's my final photos of The Dreaded Ambull from Blackstone Fortress.
I really enjoyed painting this guy. It got to be a struggle for the last few days as I was trying to find time to do the base and life kept getting in the way. Taking the photos was a pain as I feel ill and just want to go to bed! Still, another month on the streak. I think I might have one of the longest unbroken streaks of entering every month, not as long as Nevelon or Paradigm, and probably a bit behind Midget Gems, but I've entered every month since May 2016.
I'm looking forward to going through all the entries properly to post comments and give out votes. There's a lot of great-looking stuff!
Can't always fix everything you want. :-/ Calling it quits for Feb. The bust is a bit of an awkward size so I don't have any plinths the right size for it. Definitely need to mess with the skintone a bit more and smooth a few areas of overpaint. Might come back and tattoo him later. I think the NMM aged bronze key turned out well.
Spoiler:
Bort The Iron Butcher
Manufacturer: Scale 75
Scale: 1:12
Line: Chronicles of Run Bust
I've been using odds and ends for plinths as they are a pain to come by in North America. This one is a napkin ring. I should have bought a few more as the chain it was from recently went out of business.
I'm the same. There are a couple of plinth sellers here but they're usually boring and cast in resin and require painting. Those ones are quite good if you want to build your scene into the plinth, but Im always on the look out for interesting displayware.
Thanks for all the kind words already! @Modock that TAG is brilliant, and I'm hoping post Adepticon to start slamming out some Infinity for these challenges, so that you're not the only one repping Corvus Belli! ;D
@QAR that Calas has got some mighty fine weathering, and @Feltmonkey, that Ambull is clean AF!
Yeah, I didn't finish either. Oh well, my motivation was shot after failing to finish a couple of the earlier challenges. Maybe for the new cycle I'll be able to do them all.
Ugh Covid 19. It completely wrecked my progress with this challenge. We started contingency planning at work in the last week of Feb and with government guidelines changing frequently over the last few weeks had to keep starting those plans over. In case anyone was wondering, I work for an exam board and no exams happening has some far reaching implications.
Anyway, that finally stopped taking up enough of my life that I finished my entry. As before with a late one, this is largely just to show that the model hasn't ended up as another half painted project to languish on the desk,
