Armoured fighting vehicle project thread. @ 2020/04/16 04:24:56

Post by: OldMate

I like armored fighting vehicles, and I like to see what projects and ideas other people have. It's always a good source of inspiration looking on the forum at other people's projects but there does not seem to be a dedicated thread.
As the name suggests, if it floats, flies, skims or drives and it has a weapon mounted on it, this thread can be it's home! If you are working on a project (or perhaps want to post up a previous project you are quite proud of,) or plan to start you're welcome to post ideas etc here.

As I intend for this to be a image heavy thread I'd ask that images be put in spoilers boxes. Just hit the spoiler button, then image button, paste image address and then image button then spoiler again. It's easy and looks neat. Other than that feel very welcome to write as much about your vehicle, it's purpose, history etc as you want. I want this thread to be a creative space, which won't work if you hold back on your awesome ideas and of course your imagination.

Cheers

My surveillance car for my Commonwealth forces (40k Guard)- Pending name and designation
The vehicle itself is a converted ramshackle games degu scout car and is inspired by real life vehicles such as the German/Dutch Fennec recon car.
It's a simple and rugged 4x4 design, armed with a pintle mounted weapon(in this case a grenade machinegun) for self defence. The vehicle carries an extending mast camera system which can be placed on a tri-pod mount and operated remotely feeding information back via a 50m field telephone cable. This means the vehicle can take up a position out of line of sight, while still performing it's surveillance and recon role. It also has a large multi-spectral camera/optic on the front right hand part of the hull and a short range RADAR positioned behind that. The vehicle's purpose is to carry out surveillance on enemy units and detect concealed enemy units (using it's advanced systems). It is capable of auspex sweeps and also carries a long range vox set.

Spoiler:
this is a rather old picture, my apologies

Some much newer pictures vehicle is still WIP, will put decals on it and then weather it.
Spoiler:

Surveillance car named 'Mongoose', a name I thought particularly fitting as it goes ahead of/accompanies the main body and flushes out treacherous concealed enemies. Marked as a specialist vehicle. Fluff wise decided it should have a geophone, which can be lowered through a hatch on the underside of the vehicle and is used to detect sub terranian movement. The Commonwealth will not be caught flat footed with this thing around.

24/05
Vehicle project completed, have to base tripod at some point

That is what I thought. I have 2x 6x6 armoured cars on the same chassis, I put an angled glacis plate on all three vehicles, then I was looking at a picture of the 6x6 Saladin armoured car, my 6x6 armoured cars were quite similar!

Another project:
MBT turrets. I intend on getting some Mortian medium chassis to put these on (as they are sold separately to the turrets) I have 2x types of turrets I intend to use on this chassis. I have 2 of these chassis coming from Germany, so ahead of that I am going to prepare 2x vehicle turrets (and crews!). These tanks are representing a veteran unit that has seen a lot of combat recently, they will be covered in stowage and random looted items.

Victoria miniatures turrets:
Spoiler:

I put milliput on the underside of the front of the turret as there is a gap there. I love these turrets, the nice cast look of the churchill mk1 is really cool. As you can see I put a mortian muzzle break on the vanquisher, targeter from GW's heavy weapons teams. I'm very happy with the look of this gun. Also on the first turret i cut the loader's hatch out so i can put a loader in there. Made the hatches from polystyrene. The turret with the stowage will be mounted on one of my first tanks (which is in transit from Germany now)

Mortian Medium tank turrets:
Spoiler:

As seen on site

My modifications and some stowage. As you can see my addition of the loader's hatch. The turret with the open hatch is magnetised in armament and will be mounted on one of my first chassis. The other turret with the large box will have a space marine hunter killer missile magnetised to the side of the turret next to the loader's hatch.

So my Mortian chassis returned to the warehouse becasue of the Corona virus, just got to wait till German Post clears it with Australia Post and they'll come.
New Update: My tanks are being posted! Again!

Some Decals I like to use by Rubicon models:
Spoiler:

They arrived today!!

Have 2x old(read OOP) Kromlech 7TP turrets that are armed with some seriously beefy gatling cannons, they make a standard sized punisher cannon look weak.
Spoiler:

I have since ordered 2x of these Valentine tanks form Blitzkrig miniatures, these vehicles are from their 1/48 scale range and I want to measure up the pieces to see if they're spot on 1/48th as Blitzkrig has a 1/56 28mm range and a 1/48th 28mm range. I will then order a few more things later on if I'm happy with the level of detail and scale.

Spoiler:

The intention is to have a medium tank perhaps armed with an avenger bolt cannon, and for this vehicle to have an extremely low profile. The idea is it is a suppression vehicle that can go hull down anywhere and is basically a colossal pain to any advancing infantry, light and medium armour.

Some links if you're interested.
http://www.blitzkriegminiatures.com/index.html

https://bitsofwar.com/

Okay, so my valentines arrived today, and my crusaders(which I also ordered from Blitzkreig some time after the valentines, but you know coronovirus and all ) on Friday, Progress on those projects were fast, just made some adapters to fit the turrets with plasticard, crusader MK1 hull MG clips with turret so I'll magnetise that with the MK2 hatch and replace the besa with a GW heavy stubber or 3d printed 30cal heavy stubber, so I can outfit the crusader turrets with guns and have the choice of a light recon tank and a AA tank.
Spoiler:

Valentines were easy, turret require a little modification(namely trimming some detail from the underside of the turret back) and some plasticard disks to fit the turret recess. The valentine turrets have about the same internal capacity as the chimera turrets so they'll look great kitted with an auto cannon or similar and mounted on a degu scout car.

Decided I'll likely arm the crusader turrets, with the option of having twin auto cannons, twin las cannons and a heavy stubber and conqueror cannon, will outfit the hull turret with options of: Grenade machinegun, heavy stubber, twin melta guns, twin plasma guns, twin flamers. To give it a bit of firepower.

Valentine stowage! One has an ATGM to defend itself and a big plastic box with another couple missiles in there.
Spoiler:

5/7/20
Primed and sprayed the valentines today, require a little clean-up.
Spoiler:

12/7/20
More work on valentine details. I've decided I want to get alternative turrets for these vehicles to give the option of using them as gun tanks, because they are just so cool.
Spoiler:

This Blood and Skulls Tiger style APC turret seems about the right size and has the bones of a Valentine mk 1 turret(yeah a cylinder), with some modification it'll work well, I'll likely use Blood and skulls weapons, to make it easier for myself.

19/07/20
Mostly finished them, they need a little bit of dust and they're good for battle. On those alternate weapons and turrets. I've put an order with blood and skulls.
Spoiler:
AudaciousArk I like the scaling, they are the bare minimum size for a self proppelled heavily armed, armoured steel box with 3 human inhabitants. I can see similar vehicles being used by guard regiments and especially PDF. As an extension cult of all kinds, but I just decided to use these fellows for scale.

I can imagine this vehicle being a supreme pain in the backside on the battlefield, it's armoured enough to warrant AT weapons to neutralise it, it's tiny and can hide easily becasue of it's low profile, so it can ambush very effectively and it's going to be annoying to knock out from combat distances, while suppressing the battlefield with short bursts from it's avenger gatling cannon. Which, if you're short of being in a heavy tank is more than a substantial threat.
Valentines as armed with gatling cannons are effectively finished as of today, will post pics.

25/07/20
Valentine chassis and supression turrets are completed.
Spoiler:

Hey OldMate, I've got a vehicle project that might suit your interests, or at least your thread. I have two shamefully old, partly built Imperial tanks that I need to push through and get finished... if for no other reason that they'll be easier to store and I won't lose all their bits.

The Chimera is one I disassembled, cleaned up, repainted and started to work on a turret conversion before getting sidelined by a rules change. It is destined to hold three Bullgryns plus a Preacher, Psyker, and Inquisitor in my mostly-hypothetical Inquisition-themed Astra Militarum army.

The Rhino was a poorly built Sisters of Battle Exorcist the I sold the upgrade parts from, rebuilt, and sprayed black to be either an Inquisition transport or, more likely, a Repentia/Arcoflagellant bomb to race across the battlefield with my Sororitas force.

Both are an optimistic summer project, a secret shame, and a now-or-never... I have a lot of unfinished projects and these take up more than their share of space. Here we go!

Spoiler:

Whoops, almost forgot the fun part: I ordered a $5 MDF Rhino upgrade kit from Promethium Forge (from the really cool laser-cut MDF clearning house www.everylittlewar.com) called the "Buffalo"... for five bucks, it was worth a shot! I think I'll try building it separately, painting it red, and sliding it onto the black Rhino for some contrast and an armored look.

Spoiler:

Are you planning on painting the chimera in a inquistion style scheme?

Nice MacPhail, that rhino should look pretty nice between the extra armour and the ornate hedge cutter on the front!

Neat project, looking forwards to seeing it progress!

and here is some impression of the current state of the project:

It has been pretty fun so far.

And to the other posters here: those are some nice projects. Looking forward to see more Inspiration in this topic.

Couple of slightly spiky chaos projects going on.

Couple of salamander scouts - one based on the actual model, one a variant using the ever-popular bonekorpus tracks

Spoiler:

Extra armoured been added to the standard version. Could not find any of my wire, so whip aerial used thin plastic rod - we'll see how well that holds up. Both will get plenty of extra stowage, equipment hanging off the struts, spare treads etc.

And an ancient tank destroyer variant, based on the bonekropus tank.

Nice Monkeytroll
I like the bars for a canvas cover, I mean who actually likes getting rained on?
I like to put mudguards on my chimeras from drive to sprocket wheel(well where they'd be) and then you will have about 50% of the treads in the kit for decorating your tank with!

Nice to see renegades too. Always get the sense that 90% of the Imerpium's enemies are orks and other humans.

That tank hunter has a pretty gnarly gun!

Dusted off my poor Ramshacle games Rheboks today and gave them some love with bluetack and some spray cans(GW Zandari dust and Army painter fur brown). Well I ran out of spray can on the second vehicle's turret, I still love them though. They are so brutish and have their own charm, in my veiw, I can totally understand if you think they look horrid. Both of these will be legacy vehicles that were brought home from some campaign(Who'd think that the armies Oldmate's fluff horde all kinds of AFVs like they're going out of fashion?) or other and mothballed till the 132nd Commonwealth Combined Rifles required rearmament during the current conflict on Ardus. Both vehicles have the option of a twin auto cannon turret and a smaller turret armed with either an auto cannon or an assault cannon.

Spoiler:

18/05
Some more progress on the Rheboks, and a mock up for a new project, airbrushed the 2nd vehicle and Zandari dust is an exact colour match for Humbrol 94 desert brown.
Spoiler:

23/05
Decals on, 1st vehicle(brown, tan and green) named Mammon, second Mammoth(brown and tan). Keeping with troop names starting with same letter, vehicles are numbered and marked for Bravo company 2nd Platoon 1st Btln 132n Commonwealth Combined Rifles.
24/05 Finished weathering process, just have to put some cotes on the vehicles.
Spoiler:

Apologies for the gak photo quality.

17/06/20
So my 2nd wave of Rheboks arrived today! They are nearly priming stage, just a bit more work, little bit of clean up, some more camo nettinfg, maybe a tarp or 2 and got to magnetise the guns for the fire support vehicle. Fire support(russ weapons) vehicle and flamer vehicle(hellhound with heavy flamer in hull).
The work so far:
Spoiler:

Applied tarps to these vehicles, and more camo netting on the fire support vehicle, and added a block of putty to the tank on the rear of the flamethrower vehicle so that I can mgnetise a sign there denoting just what kind of hazard is contained in the tanks, whether it's flammable or corrosive...

04/7/20
Primed and started painting fire support Rhebok.
Spoiler:

5/7/20
Sprayed flamethrower rhebok today.
Spoiler:

Put decals on my rheboks.

Nice ones. I saw those last year and thought they are not really my style, but revisiting them I might get one in the future. The definitly look very robust

Might get another 2 eventually. There is a flamethrower vehicle with big fuel tanks on the back instead of the infantry compartment, which would make a nice hellhound, and I might make a more fire support orientated IFV. Maybe with a Victoria Miniatures Matilda Boss (cromwell) turret.

Started painting my Victoria Miniatures Kangaroos today, some pics of the earlier in the project.
About sums up all the weapons options I included.
Weapons as mounted from the top down.
Pintle:
Heavy Stubber
Storm Bolter
Automatic Grenade Launcher

Turret Side:
Hunter Killer
5x 3Inch Rockets

Turret:
Conqueror Cannon & Heavy Stubber
Twin Auto-Cannons
Auto- Cannon & Heavy Stubber
Twin Heavy Bolters
Multi-Laser & Heavy Stubber

Hull
Heavy Bolter
What you were expecting more?

As you can see changes from stock are not that big, located exhaust pipe on the engine opposite the big air intake, because I didn't want it venting out the back. Also added an infantry telephone to the rear. And puttied the rear slot of the turret.

Undecided as to the lore of these vehicles and where they fit into my force, the troop compartment under that turret is pretty small, reminds me of a bradley, especially now I've put so many weapons on it. Perhaps it could fulfill the cavalry role of the Bradleys. I like the idea that the rocket pods(sentinel missile pod) were meant to go to another unit (I'd purchased them as ATGM but was unimpressed by the tiny size, especially as I was already using spacemarine hunter killers and havoc launchers as Anti-tank missile systems, which well a bigger missile, more punch innit?) so fluff wise someone makes a bungle and this unit ends up with a few launchers and a tonnage of rockets, and decide to just slap them on, becasue the vehicle has a mounting there anyway. Or perhaps they were serving with/against sentinels and salvaged some pods and slapped them on the side for extra firepower. However the case stranger things have happened at sea.

Twist is the multi-laser is not a multi-laser, it's an imperial knight heavy stubber, because it's the same size as a multi-laser and the rest of my army(with a few noble exceptions) are rocking ballistic weapons rather than lasers. So here I figure the multi-laser is about equal to a ww2 era Besa 15mm or more modern Soviet 14.5mm machine gun. A heavy suppression weapon, that is really really good for mulching light targets with.
Spoiler:

Vehicles will be done in an approximation of the Cauter Scheme used by the British during the start of the desert war in WW2, as the vehicles really look like they want to be painted that way.

Sprayed vehicles, contrast between the slate grey and dark slate grey was actually pretty minimal on the first vehicle, so thinking of spraying a thin pale stone wedge between them. Silver grey was all chunky, not putting that through the air brush so used administrtum grey instead, came out a little glossy and I thined it down a bit too much, but let it dry between coats and dull coat will fix the glossynes.

Some progress pics:
Spoiler:
Pretty happy with vehicle 01, just gotta do that bit of slate grey on the top right corner of the gun mantlesHad hoped the contrast between the slate grey nd the dark slate grey would be better, but apparently not.

Another Progress pic on vehicle 02, wanted to make one grey and one the slate grey-green colours that were used in ww2 (these were British Naval colours from the Mediterranean fleet HQ in Egypt) Am happy with the results of mixing Tamiya JA grey 2/3 to 1/3 Humbrol 31 -slate grey (which I sprayed on orignally and did not have the contrast with the Humbrol 242 -dark slate grey).
Spoiler:

Some more progress pics:
Decals on, mostly detailed and weathered. Weapons want a little paint, and will dust them lightly with pastels. Might do a tutorial on that. Vehicles 501 and 502 of HQ recon troop of the 5th tank company of the 76 armoured division, haven't come up with a regimental name yet, but these will be from the same unit as my main battle tanks earlier in the thread.
Spoiler:

Here armed with "multi-lasers" .

Both vehicles are finished, 501 named 'Valiant' and 502 named 'Archer' commanders need painting, and I think I'll magnetise the pintle weapons at some point.
With that dust I was talking about earlier:
Spoiler:

25/0 7/20
Magnetised the pintle weapons and painted the commanders, glued commanders in and waiting for putty to set on pintle mounting so I can paint over it.

Should really have posted this here:

Pretty cool weapons options. I like the Sentinel missile launcher in the side. I imagine with some bigger rivets it would fit even better

Crusader hull weapons.
Spoiler:

As you can see, the guy has that big D shaped hatch to the left of the gun, he sits in there, eye to that shielded sight, he'll have to put his arms out of the hatch to get their shoulders out, like the tiny hatches on a churchill/cromwell. But an unarmoured soldier should be able to get in and out.

Crusader magnetisation so far:
Spoiler:

Both models of crusader

Scale shot with las cannon

It's a good sized tank. Not a heavy tank, not going to put a lot of hurt out, but it'll put out enough hurt. And it'll look great alongside by bigger(and smaller) vehicles.
Also needs a coaxle heavy stubber and will have some kind of AA mount.

2nd turret is the Victoria miniatures matilda fury(churchill mk 1/2) turret.
Personally I like this turret a bit more, becasue I've always been fan of the churchill, and those smooth cast turrets.

Mortian resin is really nice, it's much like Victoria's to work with but he makes use of finer detail.
I've encountered a few solid blobs but they were mainly on the inside of the pieces and are not an issue.

Both vehicles look really cool together, especially lined up with their vanquisher cannons.

More work on my crusader tanks.
Spoiler:

Crusader light battle tank
Turret is armed with a co-axle heavy machinegun.
Primary weapons options:
Twin Las cannons
Conqueror cannon
Twin Hydra auto cannons - Ran out of plastic tube for the 2nd model so ordering some more :(

Hull weapons compliment, can be configured without hull weapons:
Twin linked Flamethrowers
Twin linked Plasma guns
Twin linked Melta guns
Medium machinegun
Grenade machinegun

Crusader Stalker AA tank

Twin tribarrel Stalker AA cannons
4x flak rocket pods

Traditionally the hydra cannon is not seen outside the flack role on the hydra flck tank, but here it is used in ground fire role by this tank to carry out suppression fire on enemy vehicles at longer ranges than regular auto cannons. Whilst the dustbin turret is tiny I expect that you could fit a particulary small crewman/woman in there, and failing that jamb a ratling in there.

Currently, I've gotten this far on a Griffon. Will post more as she goes. The hull is an ebay salvage Chimera, the entire top had been stove in, (maybe someone dropped something on it?) but there's still some stowage on the sides. This one has been sitting on the desk for a while.
Dusted off an assault tank based on a chimera chassis and a blood and skulls kollosus turret.
Today I made some sandbags from putty and put them over the front hull and attached some track links(as you can see I am watering down my hoard with 3d printed product) on the lower front hull, also made some HEAT skirts for the vehicle's sides that are magnetised. I'll put putty over the magnets and smooth it off, and it'll be really nice after its painted. I don't want to pile the sandbags too high as I intend to put some periscopes in for the driver and hull gunner. I also have started working on the commander.

New turrets for my valentines. Includes the following options, conqueror cannon to put ordinance on targets, twin las-cannons to breach heavy armour, twin auto-cannons to suppress and kill troops and light to mid armoured vehicles, volkite culverin because they found it lying around in an old warehouse... and plasma cannon, closer range specialist vehicle. Pintle mounted heavy bolter to boost firepower and coaxle heavy stubber to kill infantry. Turrets are blood and skulls, the rear section is not a back bin, it is meant to be part of the turret I've yet to add aerials. I like the layout of the smoke dischargers and will use this configuration more often from now on.
Don't mind the guys in the background.

A bit of progress on the baneblade and 3rd kangaroo
This represents a more refined 'tank hunter version of the vehicle, rather than just having the aluncher for self defence, it's likely this vehicle carries more munitions and less scouting equipment. Large mounting arm boasts a full sized folding fin aerial rocket pod, or a 2X3 HK pod.
Spoiler:

And the baneblade. This is the most revered and valuable vehicle of my army, it is the center of gravity and the center of the guard's trust in the holy firepower, it is an ancient vehicle with a reputation earned on many a battlefield. This is no regular baneblade. This is a unique vehicle commissioned from the Dragonforge of Karsk, pride of the Klomn 81st Cuirassiers. I also pimped out the little shrine on the back to make it more suiting to a tank of such honoured pedigree. I can imagine this vehicle dominating other baneblades(as the gun is much bigger the turret much more armoured and much more sophisticated targeting) and going toe to toe with other super heavies.
Spoiler:

Here are some modifications to the original form.
Blood and skulls
Extended fuel tanks
centralised turret plate
really big gun (albeit two kingslayers cut and glued together, I guess that's like an emperor slayer? )
sponsons with a single las-cannon and a single heavy bolter on each side

My additions
Hydra Auto cannon co-axle
IR spot light on gun mantle
chaff discharger mounted on barrel
bore evacuator sleeve
targeter on barrel (also acts a a reference for the gunner/commander,
Remote weapons staions with addiotional optics, smoke dischargers and grenade machineguns
Spare wheels and tracks
Stowage(done since the photos were taken)
Hull extension
Imperial Knight heavy stubber(multi-laser proxy) Loud speaker on commander's cupola
Twin heavy bolter on loader's cupola
Perescopic gunsight for gunner
fully traversing commander's sight, can tag and track targets for hunter killer(rapid target aquisition so that the main gun can be traversed onto the next targets as identified by the loader and commander as soon as a kill is confirmed, no messing around trying to find it) capability.

2nd turret for baneblade
Spoiler:

Blood and skulls heavy tank turret, I could not help myself and gave it plenty of weapons options
This turret is obviously more versitile, although not as ergonomic, I think this will represent another baneblade of the 81st of lesser pedigree but also manufactured in the Dragonforge, probably afterwards, using the design of the first vehicle's hull and a more versitile but less armoured turret.
2X massive las cannons
massive plasma cannon
2x automatic battle cannons
2x mega-bolters/massive punishers
2xrailguns
2x laser destroyers

So it's been a while but a bit of an update here!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I have completed the valentine battle tanks. They are named Beetle and Betty.
Spoiler:
first up conqueror cannons for engaging enemy vehicles, strong points, beasties and of course for indirect fire bombardment. Las-cannons for putting the pressure on heavily armoured targets and twin autos for crowd control and general suppression. In both cases drive into a hull down position and ruin someone's day. For when you need to bring something more to the field.

Stinger. A little robot to support my pig iron troops. I had the pieces there from other projects so it made sense to throw them together and it made sense to add a support platform to the team.
Spoiler:

Progress on WIPS
Crusader Stalker flak tanks.
Require a bit more weathering and details on stowage but I haven't posted in an age so what the hell?
Spoiler:

Crusader Battle tanks
Much the same. Knight is being crewed by a pretty accomplished bunch. She has 5 kills against enemy tanks.
Spoiler:

Personally I like the look of the crusaders, they're really sleek and low. They look like cheetahs to the leman russ's rhino.

I like those Valentines, the turrets especially fit that blocky, 40k aesthetic. Although, a little small for those pintle mounts.

Armoured fighting vehicle project thread. @ 2021/01/24 22:44:41

Post by: OldMate

Cheers. I think they'd make a good PDF tank with their own rules. The heavy bolters are massive, I wanted to add that level of firepower to them to make up for the lightness of overall firepower(as undoubtedly the crew might).
I mean the crusaders have the choice of packing a hull turret with a heavy stubbers, or double flamer/plasmagun/meltagun in the hull turrets. So they're probably pretty useful in the context of 40k's long list of heavily armed vehicles.

Really cool additions Oldmate! I like the elegant lines of the Crusader turrets. And the heavy bolters give the Valentines an interesting touch. Your Stingers are also pretty cool. Looks like you have been busy over Christmas

Another one from me I'm pretty proud of:

Spoiler:
Another kitbashing project I had in the back of my head for quite some time. Surfing around for cool IG vehicles I found this from Vontrrag:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3963999
That is based on an old White Dwarf (?) kitbashing tutorial and seems to have even had some lore and stats back in the day.

Vontrrag (who has some other pretty cool model files for download and is a nice dude on top of it) has modelled the thing for 3D printing, but I wanted to try and cobble the general chassis together myself. So I only printed the side panels, back exhaust and mud guards, got myself a Gryphone pattern chimera turret from another source

So I got myself a Chimera lower hull and front as well as a Leman Russ upper hull and started.
step 1: preparations

Cut the chimera upper front as shown. The formost part is cut imediatly at the transition from angled to horizontal plate. Also file away the structures on top of the upper part of the Leman Russ upper hull front.

step 2: building the hull

Glue the first and third part of the Chimera upper front to the lower hull. Carefully file down the region with the red arrow in the first pic, so that the Leman Russ hull attaches nicely there. Now put the Leman Russ upper hull to the Chimera structure. You might need to file away a bit of the Leman Russ hull were the red arrow is.

step 3: rounding up

Upper pic: a bit of plasticard closes the whole for the the Chimera hatch. Lower pic: the back of the Leman Russ hull was cut short up to the triangular plates at the back corners. The Basilisk backplate was glued to close the hull, but has to be angled a little bit (dryfit first!).

Step 4: adding details

The sides were closed with plasticard. I also added the printed mudguards and side armor panel. Middle pic: Had some tires lying around and tried to fix them to the floor. I first had one axis each for the forward and backward wheels but that looked dumb and completely lacking any suspension or way to steer. This version is... a bit better. At least one could imagine each wheel "housing" to have a rudimentary suspension and maybe a way to steer either by turning the wheel or differential speeds. Last pic: a very basic and ugly, but working variant to get the 3D printed chimera turret to the turret mounting of the Leman Russ.

Step 5: before priming

The final result so far. The hull flamer is magnetized (I would prefer a heavy Bolter, but I currently don't have one spare). Some more details will be added, maybe a kind of basket with jerrycans.

Nice work as always Pyro. Really cool little vehicle, is that turret 3d printed or forgeworld? the multi-laser looks good

Armoured fighting vehicle project thread. @ 2021/03/08 10:05:26

Post by: Pyroalchi

I'm pretty satisfied with that multilaser too. I found it when I searched for Multilaser parts. Here are the source files (free for download):

Centaur complete and vehicle Multilaser:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3963999
"crewbased" multilaser (for pintle mounts and heavy weapons teams) as well as another freaky IG vehicle from an old White dwarf
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3956786
Gryphonne pattern Chimera turret (including parts for Heavy Bolter with stormbolter, twin-HB, autocannen)
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3588762

I merged the Gryphonne turret with the Multilaser from the Centaur to get that turret. Regarding the FW question: They are definitly heavily inspired by those.
The big Antenna is from the Tank upgrade sprue. I'm still puzzling around what stats to give this thingy. It looks fast and should be with the strong Leman Russ engine working on wheels instead of tracks and a hull that should be lighter than either a Chimera or a Leman Russ. And I imagine it as having quite a good radio equipment.
So I would guess:

Centaur L.R.V
M14'', WS6+, BS 4+, S6, T7, W10, Ld7, 3+
Multilaser + hull Heavy Bolter/Heavy Flamer
can take vehicle equipment except track guards
Abilities:
Scout Vehicle (9'' move before the first turn)
Vox relais: The Centaur can act as a relais for Vox orders. Characters with the "Voice of Command" ability can order infantry units with a voxcaster within 18'' of the centaur as long as they are either within 3'' of the Centaur or within 3'' of a vox caster that is within 18'' of the Centaur*
Expanded Vox net (10 Points): The centaur can access multiple Vox channels simultanously. Characters within range can use their voice of command ability on non-regimental orders without constraints regarding regiment**

* The wording sounds complicated. I meant: as Long as the commanders Vox can reach the Centaur, it can transmit the signal further to an infantry unit. So up to 36'' orders
** again, the wording is suboptimal. I mean you can "translate" orders from for example a Catachan Commander to Scions and Cadians

Pyro, not to rain on your parade, but a later WD (White Dwarf #270) renamed that the Pegasus. This is probably due to causing confusion among two FW kits.

Some nice work Rybrook, I like the razorback, that turret is mean , and the big old fashion recoil compensators on the vindicator are cool and it fits well into the front of the modern rhino. That's also a very very burny land raider, really cool.

Okay, so I got on and finished the Crusaders, they have markings of the 121st Ardus tank regiment and are of the same regiment as the valentine tanks above. Again these vehicles have an extremely low profile when compared to something like a Russ, so they'd have much the advantage when finding cover and hull down positions to fire from. The Crusader certainly has more of a cavalry feel to it. I like the idea that it is a fast and lighter armoured vehicle, having higher endurance and speed than most other guard vehicles.

Both vehicles sport a co-axle heavy machiegun and a roof mounted machinegun for the commander.
Both vehicles are armed with the following options:
Conqueror cannon: Pretty standard tank armament, albeit to fit inside a smaller tank.
Twin las-cannon: For a tank hunter version, I can't see this design taking a large calibre high velocity cannon, so lasers are where its at.

When configured as a battle tank(it impedes the rotation of the stalker turret to an unacceptable(especially on an AA vehicle) degree) each vehicle can be upgraded with a little dustbin turret in the hull with the following armarments
machinegun (the most common armament for this type of vehicle)
grenade machinegun, for when the normal machinegun does not cut it.

Twin Flamethrowers- mounted side by side, the dustbin turret is too small to mount a heavy flamer, but mounting two regular flamers side by side offers the ability to put out more volume of flame. A specialist vehicle and probably pretty unpopular with the crews as everything is internally mounted.

Twin plasma guns- Mounted side-by side a more specialised, and rarer upgrade, this lets the vehicle hit hard against heavy infantry, the vehicle offers more speed and protection than that is available to foot weapons specialists, and can lay down considerable fire with other weapons.

Twin Melta guns- Mounted sude-by side, this vehicle is again a more specialised and rarer upgrade, the tank can offer speed to close with the enemy and protection against lighter weapons, in close in environments it has the advantage over regular tanks for its small size.

Additionally one vehicle has twin Hydra Auto cannons
This is not configured for AA use, these are mounted in the battle tank turret, and are meant to be used against enemy infantry and lighter/medium vehicles at long ranges.

Both tanks have a 'stalker AA' turret armed with a twin tribarrel revolving cannon, and 2 sets of light AA rocket pods(for dealing with pesky things like jump troops, gargoyles and any similarly 'flying infantry' without having to waste a burst of 25mm shells on them).
This turret is designed for more close in air defence than that of a Hydra AA vehicle as larger weapons and targeting systems would be unsuitably large for the chassis.
Spoiler:
Sorry for the poor photo quality, I will post a better one later

Okay another Project: Scout tank based on Blitzkreig Miniatures soviet T70
Conversion is straight forwards, I replaced the front of the mantle with a taurox battle cannon and a white metal laser weapon barrel from the top of a sci-fi Khursan Miniatures 28mm T55 analogue. And gave it a 40k aerial.
Tank is a recon vehicle, that is armed with a conqueror cannon and co-axle multi-laser, it is intended to be employed in mechanised and armoured formations, its able to lay down pretty heavy and sustained fire with the multi-laser, and the cannon offers versitility in marking targets, anti-tank, beast, fortification or infantry roles. The regiment is the remnant of an Imperial Regiment that was dispatched to be retired on Ardus and landed in the middle of the conflict.
Pics for scale and conversion, it is accompaniedn by a command team from the same regiment for scale (all units WIP at the moment):

I think the Neubaufahrzeug makes an excellent Leman Russ.

This is 1/35, similar height and width (not including sponsons), (although about 50% longer).
Not cheaper though as a 1/35 Neubaufahrzeug alone is about the same price as a Leman Russ from GW.
The two turrets match the two sponsons, and make more logical sense imo.

Finished the last Kangaroo. This is a cavalry reconnasance vehicle that is part of a recon troop in a tank regiment. It is similar in role to a modern CRV such as a cavalry bradleys, this particular vehicle has a large arm mounting either a box of 6 anti tank missiles or a Folding Fin Aerial rocket pod. The commander is brandishing a sabre, becasue you should expect such eccentricities in any unit with strong cavalry traditions, (it is actually inspired by one of the NCOs in the mortar pits in the Danish war documentary Armadilo, although he was also wearing no shirt and a shako). Vehicle is named 'Draco'. The vehicle has 4 dismounts that can carry out recon on foot or should the need arise, fight from inside the vehicle.

I'm currently stuck on holiday thanks to an outbreak of a certain virus. But before i left i finished my T70 light tank conversion for my converted Cadians. I settled on an orange tan amd dark grey scheme like the troops in their auumn gear and also placed on the vehicle branches from greenstuff world's tall realistic shrubbery- dry(which i also used to decorate the infantry bases) to act as additional camoflague. If you are thinking about buying these for basing i would heartily recommend, the also look great on vehicles.
Spoiler:
ps sorry for the poor quality of the pickture

Also airbrushed 3x Gryphons/cockatrice (armed with a heavy mortar or light howitzer(indirect fire battle cannon)) mobile artiller pieces. And 2x vickers light tanks. One C with a heavy stubber and auto cannon and One model B with two heavy bolters.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just realised i had a photo of said vehicles on my phone. So here they are:
Spoiler:

So the vickers light tanks are essentially as they seem. Light, small recon tanks that do have a bit of punch if they need it. They are lilely going to be paired with one of my tank formations a a recon force.
The Gryphons are going to be part of a supporting battalion attached to the 132nd commonwealth combined rifles and are going to also be a commonwealth combined regiment. They will also have the option of being armed with a light howitzer, woth equal stats to a battle cannon but with indirect fire capability amd longer range in this mode. The idea is its a lighter and less cumbersome piece than a basilisk and it can carry a heap of ammo within its hull. Can also be used for firect fire.

Turret is a place holder currently but I actually think I might keep it as an option, albeit with a bigger hatch on the top and rear. some concept pics as well... Cut the detail off where the side doors will be, will add hatches to the roof and firing ports along the side, have added escape hatch for driver on right hand side of vehicle, exhaust on left and a big huinged engine cover(like that on the front of a vickers light tank) over the hull gun hole of the orginal chassis

As usual great additions Oldmate. I like the look of the wheeled IFV. Somehow I could very well see it with a remote controlled heavy stubber/light autocannon weapon station. Something like the 20mm autocannon on the Wiesel.

The self propelled artillery looks great. I love the low profile superstructure. It looks as if the gun is ducking into a foxhole right there.

Compare to the Crew I'm surprise about the Vickers tanks size. I would have thought it to be smaller. Was it 1/56, 1/48 or 1/35?

Armoured fighting vehicle project thread. @ 2022/02/19 10:24:45

Post by: OldMate

Thanks Pyroalchi I reckon a remote weapons station would look pretty good up there too, I guess the vehicle has a bit of a modern look about it.

Yeah the self propelled gun casemates are pretty good, its a real shame master crafted miniatures isn't making them anymore(pretty sure they are still making marine parts).

vickers light tanks are 1/48th from Blitzkrieg miniatures, I really like them, they just are perfectly sized, I mean look at it next to my militia Vic miniatures matilda and some milita infantry(the matilda is the only thing I have that holds a pretty close leman russ footprint)

Thanks Oldmate and Flinty for your comments on the AVLB.

A few more mutilated Chimeras for you. My first ever Chimera conversions the Chimerax, Chimedon and Chimerro, copied from the Citadel Journal and based on the Epic Chimera variants released for Titan Legions.

Spoiler:

I only ever took the Chimerax in one game, way back in 2nd edition. It fired once and then jammed for the rest of the game. The Chimedon looks really clunky with the small turret and the battlecannon, if I was building it today I'd use the Taurox battlecannon in the slightly larger current Chimera turret.

WH40K didn't have many vehicles with missiles as their main weapons until relatively recently. The Whirlwind was the first, the Guard didn't get anything until the Manticore in Epic. I sought to change that.
First is a setback Chimera with a turret mounted heavy stubber and several missile racks, based on a conversion done by the blogger Admiral Drax.

Spoiler:

Next is a Chimera inspired by the British Army FV438 Swingfire antitank missile carrier. I didn't build this myself,I commisioned it's construction and the painting is mine.

Spoiler:

This last missile launcher is a counts as Hydra. A Chimera with the lasgun ports filed down, a Razorback turret mounting plate integrated into the Chimera roof, a cut down commanders cupola replacing the Chimera turret and a Forgeworld Space Marine Hyperios missile launcher. Again this was copied from a blog. In this case Corbania Prime.

@ Sentinel: all very cool vehicles. I have a bridgelayer waiting to get sprayed (much to cold here at the moment and I have to spray outside), but it has admitedly much to filigrane bridge... thingies. Yours looks much more functional.

By the way: As often mentioned I haven't had the opportunity to play yet and only collect, but should this ever change I hope to find a group with some people like those posting in this topic here. The conversions are great and there's so much thought and love going into these tanks. Would be great to see a bunch of them together on the tabletop and battling it out...

Some really cool missile vehicles, i particularly like the swingfire inspired conversion, some pretty big big missiles there, can imagne them packing a punch. Nice work on the chimerax, chimerro and chimedon, a neat set of fire support options! I was aware of the vehicles, I used them as some of the inspiration for some of my conversions and loadouts, but its really cool to see them converted and painted!

Okay so 2 projects ready for painting:

First off the Kapros (boar in Greek) 6x6 wheeled IFV.
Spoiler:

Okay so this is a mainline wheeled alternative to the chimera. It'd have similar armour, a higher speed but worse ability in crossing terrain. The vehicle is intended to cross large distance at rapid speed and be able to fight, its a 4x2/6x6 wheel drive with central locking, the wheels feature run flat tires, and a spare is mounted on the rear roof of the vehicle. They can be filled with an expanding foam to further their durability at the cost of cross country performance. The vehicle has its engine placed on the front left hand side next to the driver and is acsessible by a large armoured hatch on the front. The turret is usually equipted with a heavy bolter and additionally either a multi-laser, heavy bolter, or auto cannon, or 15mm machinegun(my very ballistic army's multilaser equivalent from the imperial knight kit). The vehicle has 2x clam-shell style doors at the front of the passenger compartment and a large ramp at the rear, on the roof of the passenger compartment is 4 large hatches to allow troops to fire from, whilst down each side of it are 4 sets of firing ports and vision blocks for the infantry to be able to fire from. Two additional firing ports could be added to the frontal plate, as seen with Soviet vehicles like the BMP 3 or BTR, i could imagine this improving the firepower on the frontal arc dramatically if a special weapons team was mou ted in the vehicle.

Secondly my baneblade variant, the vehicle in question is named Tyrant, and it is not actually a baneblade, as it has sorta grown into something else. It can do some things better than a vanilla blade, it can't do other things the vanilla blade does, so I find it hard to reconcile as the same thing.
Spoiler:

Okay so Tyrant, has a bit of the lore behind it.
When the vehicle was commissioned it was the first baneblade line super heavy comissioned from the Dragonforge on Karsk and has served with the 81st Klomn Cuirassier regiment for hundreds of years at this point and has been recovered from wreckage twice, it is the pride and joy of the 81st Klomn Cuirassier regiment and their oldest and most storied vehicle as such the small imperial chrine on the back off the vehicle is bedecked with honours and tokens of gratitude acknowledgments of assistance from other imperial forces. The vehicle commands A platoon 1st company of the 4th assault battalion. From the start the vehicle was designed to dominate the battlefield as a super heavy tank and the centrepiece of a squadron of smaller vehicles. The Karsk pattern chassis is of cast construction and Tyrant, being a commision from the Dragonforge itself boasts adamantium fronted hull and turret making it considerably heavier than either the Mars Pattern or Lucius Pattern vehicles, it mounts a colossal cast turret and its primary weapon is a massive high velocity cannon and coaxle hydra auto cannon, on top of the gun mantle a heavy machinegun is mounted and it is zeroed to hit in the same place as the primary up to a kilometer past that distance you might be using the auto cannon. The chassis boasts standard smoke, optical and grenade launching pylon turrets on the front hull and twin heavy bolters recessed into the hull armour. A pair of remotely controlled sponsons on the side of the vehicle are mounted with a las cannon and a heavy bolter each to counter both armoured and unarmoured threats.

So unlike a regular baneblade it was never intended to be used as a command or observation platform, it was never intended for a commander to command a tank regiment from, or for forward observers to operate from, it was never intended to have space for an inquisitor to come on a ride along, the huge turret basket and stocks of high velocity shells in its hull and propellant charges has never allowed such, the vehicle is an exceptional super heavy tank but in order for greater protection on the frontal arc all vision ports in the upper hull of a regular baneblade were not even considered in the Karsk pattern chassis. Tyrant has never been commanded by anyone over the rank of Captain, and is regularly crewed by a veteran NCO or junior officer, and it has always gone into battle alongside a squadron of the 81st Klomn Cuirassiers or in more dire circumstances allied heavy and super heavy tanks.

Okay I have finished my Kapros IFV photos! The vehicle is part of 1st platoon Bravo Company of the 132nd Commonwealth Combined Rifles
Spoiler:

I also had a spare baneblade turret sitting around (because of course I do) and I decided to see what they looked like on my Macharius tank chassis as an additional option. Its not really much a conversion, but i personally think it would be an interesting model of tank. I did not put the back bin on the baneblade turret, as for some unfathomable reason I actually like the look of a rear facing machinegun mount, its going to be extremely situational but I like the look of it.
Spoiler:

I see it as a good example of making the macharius a more versitile super heavy tank, such as mounting the collosal laser cannon(the blood and skull's sunfire laser cannon) for engaging heavy armour at long range; hellhammer cannon for urban warfare and busting bunkers; giant punisher cannon(Blood and skulls long rotary cannon) for MOAR BIGGA dakka; or just as a more harder hitting gun tank with a baneblade battle cannon rather than two regular battle cannons. I imagine the macharius to be a cheaper and quicker manufacture than a baneblade and would likely require nearly half the crew, all up it would be a good choice for imperial commanders, there is no reason why the turrets should be incompatible, but that is me the tank tinkering tech heretic here speaking.

Post by: OldMate

Okay so a few weeks back I got another macharius vanquisher, (I already have one 1st hand from forgeworld and it was pretty good, anyway, back to the main article) it was 2nd hand and relatively cheap. Someone had genuinely enthusiastically had a go at converting it. I can sorta see why they lost enthusiasm, this is an example of one of those 'forgeworld nightmares' you occasionally hear of, many details were not properly filled with resin and many edges were pinched outwards, nothing fit right, and large amounts of material had to be removed for the sides of the hull could actually fit together, edges and tracks were thin and brittle and broken/ragged. The hull gun mounting had not been modified and it straight out was way too small and did not fit. Not sure what the guy did with the hull gun but it would have just keep falling out how the hull was and there was something weird going on with the front of the driver's compartment.

Spoiler:

So the conversion already on the vehicle, as you can see seems to be some heavy suppression platform, it carries a single HK missile to protect itself from enemy tanks and mounts 2 auto cannons in the hull, 2 sponson mounted heavy bolters and a pair of punisher cannons in the turret(mounted to what would seem to have been the macharius's battle cannon', so it was the base model tank). Additionally there was a small baneblade turret with twin heavy bolters mounted where the driver's hatch was. The vehicle also mouted a large ammo hopper mounted behind the back bins on the turret for additional ammo for the primary weapons and the some kind of engine shields/flaps(mudflaps).

So I wanted, by comparision a rather standard vehicle, but most of the work as going to be fixing the base kit so it was not a forgeworld nightmare.
So I needed to put some milliput down and line that hull mounting and line it up, and make a new machinegun mounting, which was made from 2x victoria miniatures heavy weapons wheels, a machinegun from Mortian and miliput and styrene sheet and dowl. I glued the housing back into place and then filled all the gaps with putty, this is pre clean up. I also made e new driver's hatch with a chimera one and glued some perescopes to it. Syrene strips and sheet and dowl I glue the dowls on and trimmed them off to make rivet heads and filled the sides of the hull in after in fitting the hull sides I found some pretty substantial gaps so miliput was used to fill them. I also used the strips to restore the bars that come along the hull on each side of the turret mounting, on the kit these were more like T shaped bars and were brittle and fragile. I also used some small pieces of plasticard and putty to make the engine plate mounting and to build some hinges on the matle plate on the top of the turret. I also cut some doodads off and positioned a loader's hatch onto the vehicle an as you can see I could not resist giving it a big ole spot light next to the gun mantle and some smoke launchers. I also hacked some Victooria miniature vanquisher cannons from their mounts and fitted them to the battle cannon stubs i managed to part the punisher cannons from.
Spoiler:

No doubt it still needs a tankie commanding from the hatch and more stowage and machineguns. But essentially the working up process is complete to my satisfaction. The gun mantle is magnetised and I have a vulcan mega bolter in the post for this vehicle in addition.

Wow.
i know exactly what you're dealing with there; i had the same thing with a storm eagle gunship kit.

The original owner bought a kit from forgeryworld.
They tried to build it despite the obvious shoddyness, but took the L for whatever reason.

It's so much effort to 'fix' that stuff and i see your pain here.

big up the home-brand rivet posse etc...

That storm eagle must have been a fair project to fix then? I can see a lot of room for, mischance, At least mine was a giant block with some other big blocks LOL.

Yeah, my first macharius(that I brought 1st hand) was perfect. asside from a few minor breakages from small components being packed floating free with some big chunky chassis parts. So I had that for reference which was a massive help.

I really enjoy tinkering with my little(and not so little...) tanks and came into this from a modeling background so its not so much an issue to me, I just feel sorry for the poor guy who got it originally.

Vulcan Megabolter on the macharius. For Bbbrrrrrrrrrt.
I do like the look of the weapon mounted in the front of the vehicle over the mounting on the sides of the turret on the official model. It also gives me the option of it being a vanquisher and vulcan and it gives me room for loader's hatch. Which is extremely important.
Spoiler:

So the official model for comparison. And yes, I did cut the veiw ports from the upper hull. Ain't anyone that deep inside the vehicle got business with seeing out.

OK so a mortian tank ARV crane project, all the recovery equipment here is magnetised so I can run it as a gun tank as well and the 3rd armour pannel on the side is magnetised for a sponson. Recovery kit includes 2x cable drums, 2x ridgid towing bars an oxy-aesceteline cylinder on the back and the big ole crane turret, it is armed only with a hull gun and a single medium machinegun in the 2nd turret hatch. For cable I have used waxed nylon thread for leather working so it should be interesting. I just want a pair of towing hooks and they will be mounted on the rear just behind the cable drums.

Ok so another completed project. This is a pretty simple and small conversion for my Praetorians, a Rolls Royce armoured car from Empress miniatures. The conversion and project was very much inspired by the Palestine campaign in WW1, where the Rolls Royce was in a class of its own, enough strength and power to run down any enemy car, let alone horsemen, whilst being completely bulletproof to small arms fire and shell fragments, and in an age where artillery was not expected to have to hit a car sized target with direct fire.

The Royce pattern armoured car is part of the the Praetorian 82nd Long range reconnaissance group, the reconnaissance vehicle akin to an armoured sentinel in role and armour. The Royce pattern armoured car is armed with a single heavy stubber and a melta gun
Spoiler:
I could have mounted a heavy weapon in the vehicle but I thought it did not look very nice, besides the water cooled vickers is classic maybe it can be a heavy bolter proxy.
, the vehicle is much faster than a sentinel and excels at long range strikes and fighting reconnaissance on less rugged terrain. The vehicle has a tray and running boards to enable it to carry additional supplies such as fuel in jerry cans, or food and water(also in jerry cans) to somewhat support its own crew or other units in long range operations, when commencing operations the running boards can also be used to carry a squad of infantry to the battle area. The Royce pattern armoured car is held in high regard with Imperial forces for its rugged reliability, hauling power, and versitility.
When it deployed to the surface of Ardus in support of the defence of the planet the experienced desert fighting 293rd Praetorian Division was equipped with many of these tried and tested vehicles.

Thanks, got it on Etsy and am very glad I did. I doubt I'll use it in an accurate Killdozer scenario (too political and depressing ending), but it will make a great breach vehicle or assault vehicle for insurgents in some modern gaming. 'Fluck your hesco barriers Yankee!'

Okay so 2 new WIP projects for y'all
The Primus Pattern Leman Russ
The first and the best. She's a bit dirty folks so apologies.
Spoiler:

What we are looking at here is a modified indiana jones tank form Empress miniatures, turret and most the weapons are from victoria miniatures. I saw it whilst looking for Alvis Stalwarts (of all things) and instantly fell in love. I needed this as a leman russ, the first pattern leman russ, the one and only the icon! This will be the single heaviest element to my little praetorian force. So its basically a leman russ. Going to be putting ahull gun in, and somehow magnetising the sponsons.

The Crocodile Assault tank
For reasons that will become apparent really quite quickly.
Also I really like crocodiles. They are badass animals, giant planks of jaw and muscle bound in heavy armour. Deceptively sophisticated and prehistoric at once. Make of these random ramblings what you will.
Spoiler:
OK so turret is from NFEYMA on cults3d and hull and sides from grim prints, I will be using these sides for a few more conversions as I frickin love churchills tanks, hull plate is from blood and skulls and the inferno cannon is from victoria miniatures. Because heavy flamers are for noobs. The tinwork track guards will not be glued down so I can go for the exposed track look any time. I have ordered a trailer (again designed by NFEYMA on cults3D, from the aptly named Crocodile and caiman vehicles) I do not know how this will fit into my force, but I imagine it to have much thicker frontal armout than a regular russ, no sponson, and travel a bit slower(so basically a churchill in spess) Extra fuel tanks on the back are for the motor not the hull weapon.

Okay some more new WIP projects:
Wheeled assault gun
Spoiler:

This vehicle is designed as an assault gun to support the mechanised troops, as the vehicle was required to be able to keep up with Kapros wheeled IFVs and be able to perform long distance road marches. The easiest solution was to adapt the Kapros chassis to carry a low pressure cannon in a remote controlled turret. An unmanned turret with an autoloader was chosen to keep weight and strain on the vehicle's chassis to a minimum whilst still packing a reasonably large calibre gun.

Russ based self propelled gun.
Spoiler:
This vehicle is a tank destroyer based on a leman russ chassis, more robust and less sophisticated stabilization equipment can more easily be fit in the hull of the leman russ making this vehicle cheaper and easier to produce and arm than a leman russ vanquisher. The weapon is effective and versatile. It is much cheaper and easier to maintain than the laser destroyer and is more effective against armoured vehicles and targets at long ranges than the Thunderer. This vehicle itself has been pulled from a local PDF storage facility on Ardus and was palmed off to a local defence unit(militia) as the local regiments believed they had no use for the vehicle.

Post by: OldMate

Technicals are pretty classic though so that is a pass.

Okay so I have a new project. And a update on an old one from here.

Firstly: Tanks from A Squadron 7/29th Armoured/cavalry!
Firstly, all vehicles have excessive stowage and excessive machineguns. All the gun tanks have a twin of heavy stubbers on the commander's hatch, These are from Mortian and look super nice, they're quite similar to some cold war AA mounts the US army and marines slapped on their patton tanks. Next every normal gun tank turret has been given a loader's hatch, where they might not have had one and this is equiped with a medium machinegun(this is inspired by the real world practice imlemented on IDF tanks), the idea being lorewise, that if the tank needs to be abandoned and the crew finds itself in a hairy situation the gun can be dismounted, and they are at least a fireteam with a machinegun rather than a few chaps with only with carbines.
Dakka tanks, BMPTs, suppression tanks,- call them what you will heavy vehicles for fighting infantry with.
I got these turrets from Mortian, but already had a flak tank turret with higher velocity auto cannons and SAMs, so these were a bit puny in comparison. But I do like the idea of the Russian BMPT in real life, it is of questionable utility in a modern army where combined arms are employed but I think the idea has real potentical in 40k, where many targets get hammered by auto cannons, and they want to get in close, so having a fully armoured battle tank or two in your troop that can lay down a hailstorm of shot at close range, and against jump troops/ slower flyers/flyer blobs and enemy units higher up in buildings. I slapped a pair of HK missiles on each ball turret so the vehicle can defend itself against heavy enemy armour.

I really love the cast look of victoria's matlida boss(churchill mk1/2) turret so slapping them on a Mortain chassis was a pretty easy plan. Especially when Mortian went to selling the medium turrets and chassis separately. The mineplow was a must have. Used a drill to make a grid of holes out of the loader's hatch and made the hatches up out of platticard as faithfully as I could, so I could have the loader above the hatch too(because I did not already have enough tank commanders to paint) Slapped some milliput in the mangled hole to smooth it out a bit.

I really like Mortian's turrets as well, so I got a bit of a mix, his medium and battle tank only come with the commander's cupola, so some detail was sacrificed, and hatches were added with plasticard and rod for the hinges. Again I wanted a loader above the hatch, so I drilled a grid in the top of the turret and made the hatches up with plasticard and slapped some milliput on top of the mangled mess of resin.

Some squadron support vehicles. The repair vehicle's equipment is all magnetised. The Hydra turret is from Maximin, although the guns that came with the turret originally were huge, they were almost battle cannon calibre, so I made new barrels out of tubing and some muzzlebrakes from blood and skulls industry quad autocannons(which I had turned into quad mortars for another project), I also slapped some SAMs on it from blood and skulls industry, figuring that the simple way that SPAAGs have been upgraded in real life is to slap more SAMs on them so I'd do that here, give it some longer range punch. I used a massively oversized mushroom shaped turret from blood and skulls industry (which came with a turret I purchased from them) as a RADAR, and the ever useful arm from the goliath truck kit to mount a big ole spacemarine vehicle command upgrade satellite dish on as another RADAR.

So that is the outgoing project, and the incoming one?
Well I was looking at the Iserali Nagamachon and the WW1 German A7V, The Nagamachon is a heavy IFV, it hosts a box full of machineguns that somehow 10 soldiers can cram into. The A7V, reportedly had a crew of 18, but this is somewhat misleading as 8 of the 'crew' had a flamethrower and happened to be stormtroopers. In today's language they're dismounts and the A7V was essentially a heavy IFV.

And I was also thinking that my 84th Karsk Assault Grenadier
Spoiler:
contingent is an elite assault formation, they want transports that can take a beating, punch through the enemy defences, maybe obliterate a strong point or two, lay down a heap of dakka on approach, and drop the big(as lorewise they're all big guys I use spacers to make them half a head taller than regular guardsmen) boys in flak coats and carapace armour into the enemy lines to rip and tear, secure the objective till less important troops arrive to consolidate it and then remount to rinse and repeat. And I thought to myself the Malcador Defender and the the old Dracosan do not fill these roles. But if one were to aquire Dracosan sides, and slap them on a Defender, then you have the ultimate murder bus for the angry dragon boys. I have also got regular malcador tank hull weapons on the way, so the vehicles don't need to be toting a demolisher around (the force already has a pair of vindicators, so they're pretty good on bunker busting guns at the moment.) and lore wise can probably carry a few more troopers.
So today the Defenders have arrived, they're in temporary storage for a little bit. But super excited for this project. It's better than I thought, as I will likely not use the sponson weapons, I can magnetise them to the superstructure weapon points, so I can then have a rolling hedgehog of auto cannons or rather excessively; las cannons).
The vehicles will carry around half a platoon of Assault Grenadiers, a pretty vanilla Dracosan (ableit with standard malcador battle tank guns magnetised to it) will round out the platoon carrying another 2 sections of stormtroopers(it has not arrived yet, so when it does I'll play around with the filter and see if it'll fit onto the Defenders, if so I can get one 3d printed, I'll post pics of a mockup Malcador when it arrives too.).
I'll have to come up with a name for the vehicle, although I do like the ring of Malcador Dauntless Heavy IFV, alternatively something dragon related is definitely a winner too as culturally they are significant to the world.

Oh and I totally forgot to post this. Finished with Butch the FW nightmare, half converted Macharius!
Now Macharius Vanquisher/Vulcan with optional baneblade turret and so many weapons options! Apologies if the photos are a bit gloomy. The only real things I have changed on both tanks from the vanilla kit, is that I added a loader's hatch to the thank, and I chopped the vision ports off the front upper hull. I figure that this is a battle tank, not a cottage in the contryside, no-one in the middle of the tank(the loader/loaders) has any reason to want to see out of it. I swapped the punisher cannons on the tank for victoria miniatures vanquisher cannons. Because macharius vanquishers are probably my favorite 40k tank.

So before shots

Spoiler:

Butch is on the right.

BBBRRRRRTTTTT

So a baneblade turret in place of Butch's turret, with the name of Ire. Be prepared for some serious tech heresy. Baneblade cannon becasue, well the macharius is meant to be a type of 2nd generation baneblade, so why'd you not think to recapture the magic by slappin a banblade turret and gun in it? Next up is a collosal laser cannon(blood and skulls industry) figuring that if a las cannon is good, a much huger one must be better. Next up a collossal punisher cannon, figuring that if a 30mm gatling cannon is good, a much huge... you get my drift. Probably someting around 57-60mm, probably not firing too quickly at that point, but it's a 57-60mm cannon so... yeah. Lastly, the classic you all know and love, a hellhammer cannon, for eradicating your enemies. I feel this is quite a plausable thing to do in universe and it doesn't take away from the baneblade's role. To me the macharius is much more focused on being a battle tank, whilst the baneblade is a mobile bastion of firepower. It's main gun might be considerable, but the fact it carries so many guns, is a fair bit hardier and has vision ports all round make it more a bastion of firepower, which can simultaneously be used to observe, command and control from. A macharius on the other hand is what is mounted in that turred and everything else is to get it to where it can blast things happily with that gun.

Okay, so the malcs and drac arrived, still waiting on a boat load of 3d parts(although they are being printed in queensland so a whole trainload?) as I do not have a printer. Anyways, some mock up picks. Bear in mind the side of the hull is like a centimetre from the centre of the hull as they were never meant to fit together and a large resin block would need to be removed(but it won't be becasue my defenders are getting 3d printed track sides)

As I suspected the solar auxilia life support system is not really compatible with the defender, but that's not an issue. I just won't give the Dracosan the filter either.

The smiley face is a good touch, I mean you don't want to come off as unapproachable or something

So the differences between the Malcador and Dracosan sides and the work done to mate the dracosan sides to my Malcador defenders. They also needed a spacer on the top, thankfully the space needed matched the off-cut section exactly.
These sides are 3d printed resin.

Really cool project Kodos, sorry for the long time to reply.
Not sure what would look better, the sci-fi vehicle look might suit. I caught aglimpse of miniature scenery's MDF APC, with a similar wheel layout.
If you're giving the russes an unmanned weapon station on the turret I think it'd really suit. I'd look a lot more like a spacemarine sicaron in layout, and I think that would really suit a more advanced imperial guard unit..

Okay, so rolling with the FW theme, my Carnosaur project!
The Carnosaur is a carnodon/predator/leman russ proxy from tiny panzer studios. I really like the A9 cruiser style dustbin turrets in the front.
Fitstly the base model with my carnodon for comparison.

And my modifications!

An additional turret, the flame cannon turret from Solwye Studios's Nyoma battle tank (a leman russ proxy with similar design and layout to the FW carnodon. I really like the long flame cannon so I purchased a pair of these turrets figuring I'd likely find something to slap them on.

Spoiler:
So I have added periscope sights to all the weapons in addition to the aperture sights that are already present on the model, the idea being a wider field of view at lesser magnification from the periscope would make up for the aperture's limited field of view. I have added a loader's hatch to the top of the turret, for safer evacuation) smoke dischargers (a standard upgrade for all my models) a new cupola which was printed from Mkhand Industries (I really like getting my cupolas 3d printed now, as I can scale them down to a more 'guardsman' size. I have added large perescopes to the cupola. I also gave it a(not 2nd hand!) toilet brush bristle antenna.
Spoiler:

I could not help myself and went for a predator destructor auto cannon as one of the weapon options, being a rather conservative in my armament preferences it has to be my favorite weapon option, I decided that unlike spacemarines the guard does not need fancy targeting equipment, or 'thermal and night vision optics', so I cut the co-axle optics from the mantle, and glued a watercooled machinegun there instead. More dakka = more betta.

Okay, so the turreted malcador project!
I decided that on top of the leman russ options I got with the kit, I'd do some Dorn armament options, so my take on the oppressor cannon, and the twin battle cannons! For the Oppressor I went for this really chunky barrel by models and minis, I have used their thinner T55 style barrel a few times for vanquisher cannons, and I think this looks great for the oppressor, look how chunky it is: I butchered Mortian's demolisher cannon, and auto cannons to make these, each vehicle can have a hull mounted demolisher(2x demolishers of different styles on the same tank would not look so good IMHO) I also had 2x ATGMs sitting around from my Carnosaurs, and thought they'd look great as a twin mount, on a certain grimdark heavy battle tank.
Twin Battle Cannons
Spoiler:

Oppressor cannon. -Coaxle autocannon brings the total up to to 4x auto cannons.

And the other weapons, spacered up some Victoria Miniatues weapons to also fit along with the Mortian weapons.

I decided to revisit an old project and change it up some, a few years ago I got a degu scout car from ramshackle games and converted it a bit.
So I have been working on the following:
From the 132nd Commonwealth Combined Rifles (which makes up the bulk of the troops in my battlegroup) A base model scout car, whilst my older vehicle was a specialised surveillance car this one is more general duty. So this vehicle is defending itself with a medium machingun and a heavy one, two heavy stubbers is a fair bit of gunfire as it's mainly going to be used against other humans.
Spoiler:

From my Klomn 7/29 Tank/Cavalry regiment, (the core armoured force of my battlegroup) A cavalry car. This is the more fighty end of the scout car spectrum, it at it's heart is to perform reconnaissance, but it has enough protection and firepower to act in a more combative role, to be used as a fast mobile reserve unit or to take tactical advantage where it presents itself. So the vehicle commander has a fully enclosed turret with his machinegun, and with bullet proof glass for all round vision. The vehicle is also armed with an anti tank rifle. Quite frankly because they are awesome. Functionally it's an auto cannon. I imagine it's a squeeze bore, with hardened core and a small charge on the back, smaller projectile but at close range it hits just as hard as a bigger lower velocity autocannon might, but in a man portable package and with some sophisticated recoil compensation.

Scout car Complete!

Some new projects!

Firstly: My take on a Destroyer Tank Hunter, I see this vehicle as more like a hellcat than a stug/jadgepanzer. Albeit a hellcat that is packing a laser destroyer! So I have a 3d printed IFV chassis from Nefyma, with open sides and exsposed suspension, I wanted the vehicle to look rather lightweight and speedy. Lore wise the vehicle is literally an IFV with a bigger engine slapped in the back, and therefore I have put the track units on backwards, (IFVs usually have their drive sprockets on the front, and this is the case in this vehicle) and a large, relatively lightly armoured turret with a laser destoyer. The painted turret here is from my models and minis 6x6 armoured car, but I have ordered the same turret for these vehicles, this time armed with a large laser cannon rather than a vanquisher cannon.

Secondly: White scout cars for my mounted up motor rifles! Troopers and crews in various states of assembly. The vehicles are from Golden Dragon Games, although I made them into scout cars rather than half tracks and added armoured shutters, and skirting.

And last, but far from least! My second baneblade... or rather Nonablade!

Spoiler:
You may wonder why I say Nonablade rather than Octoblade, it is of course because I have this
being 3d printed and coming to me in the post, and it will be magnetised, allowing me to make the coolest baneblade variant.

First up, front of the case mate. I rather like the look of the vehicle with the casemate towards the front of the vehicle, rather than the middle when the vehicle is configured as a giant self propelled gun, here it is as a shadowsword Just a bit of chopping and glueing and fitting, and it slots in and out nicely. Needs to be prettied up with a bit of milliput but that is life.

The issue then is that you have the exsposed engine deck area, so I chopped some pipes off the back of the self proppelled gun's engine and made this rear deck up out of various superfluous parts.
Obviously needs some putty to make it look pretty.
And lastly, the front of the vehicle, modified to the standard of my first baneblade, glued down some thin plasticard, bent it around the protruding wheel mounts and glued it down, then added the two strips on the side. Again, just needs some putty to get prettied back up. Go the Karsk Pattern! ...
...
...
Damn, I realised I put one track on the wrong way around.

So 2 updates
Work slowly continues on the Nonablade, I am waiting on plasticard, parts from Elrik's hobbies (new proprietor of blood and skulls industry parts), and some extra bits from bits and kits (need to swoop in when they get baneblade bits in stock.) Chopped the turret plate out as I have a blood and skulls centralised replacement. And am bilking the hull out, and modifying it in line with Tyrant, my first baneblade. I also committed extra heresy, in that fluff wise Tyrant is basically the top dog in 82nd Klomn Cuirassiers regiment when it comes prestige, the tank is the oldest and longest serving tank currently in the regiment, it is the first Karsk pattern Baneblade, it is THE Karsk Pattern baneblade and whilst others are made in prestigious forges across the industrial mega hive that is half of the planet of Karsk, Tyrant was forged in the Dragon Forge itself... so reflecting all this and the vehicle's long and storied career, I kinda desecrated the shrine on the back of the other baneblade out of existence. This is a more regular line tank. Even if it is a fricking baneblade. The vehicle only has the Mechanicus symbol at the top of where the shrine was.

But enough of that heresy! So the Karsk Pattern does away with all the tiny turrets(So that I can steal them and put them on IFVs). In the hull the small limited traverse turret is replaced by a pair of heavy bolters, (or a heavy bolter and a heavy heavy bolter?(am taking design cues here from things like the Vickers Mk VIB which paired a 303 vickers with a .50cal vickers MG, rather than just having 2x 303 vickers)) in a more heavily armoured looking embrasure. Which still has the same amount of traverse. I also needed to bulk out the hull considerably to fit a huge turret as seen on 'tyrant.' This was done with patience and plasticard. Will pretty it up with milliput later. As it stands the Baneblade superstructure is completely removable, should I want any of the other 7 variants! Also added a splattering of puttey around the driver's hatch. Because that ain't a hatch any more. Changes thus far to the giant self propelled gun and battle fortress variants only pertain thus far to the superstructure being shifted forwards permently. I have been toying with the idea of making a mantle, to bring the giant self propelled gun variants into the Stug life.
Spoiler:

I also sprayed my turreted malcadors/malcadorns. I decided to include a few rogal dorn armaments, or at least my approximation of them, case in point my tank firing it's oppressor cannon, and the other seen here with double battle cannons. Turrets are from Mortian, guns from Victoria minatures, and models and minis(this was meant to be a battle cannon, but it was like twice as round as most of my battle cannons, so I think it makes a damn fine opressor cannon!). Sprayed them kharki and dark olive drab (British). Phone camera makes them oddly ochre in colour. The green is more green and less brown, and the kharki is more brown and less yellow then you see here LOL. First time free handing with airbrush. Pretty happy.

Nice work! Very cool that you customize your Baneblades and put thought into it like with the shrine in the back. Curious to see how that smaller heavy bolter turret turns out in the end.

@ Malcadors: I really like those. The twin cannon is slightly my favorite. The gunblast on the other looks amazing. Did you do it yourself?

Wonder no more! Here is one I prepared earlier.
Spoiler:
the guns will share the same setup as my first baneblade. Or perhaps continue to wonder, my phone sometimes does not take the best photos and the camo seems to be doing it's job I am inordinately proud to say that yes, the perescope is glued to the machinegun housing so it turns with it. it is pretty satisfying.

Blast effect is from deadly print studios. I think it is fantastic, and it easily makes that tank my favorite, for it's ridiclousness. I mean I had to fill the thing's turret with milliput, sinkers and bullets(lead) to act as a counterweight for the massive resin effect(it also has a chunky big shell from Mortian on the end, speeding on a trail of fire and smoke!) as seen in this picture (barrel is pointing slightly away so the whole scale of the effect is somewhat reduced unfortunately).

Okay, so I am holding off doing anything durasstic with the nonablade casemate, until I fit the plasma blast gun. It however has not arrived yet.
Regardless: Nonablade project progress!
So Banesword pics, Super Stug time!
Spoiler:
I have filled in around the driver's hatch to make that a single part of the cast hull, and have filled in the large direct vision port next to the gun on the superstructure. I have smoothed off the hatches in the rear deck, my part that slots in behind that has a pair of hatches in that, and Imagine these are used to resupply the self propelled gun variants of this tank. have come up with a new pattern of commander's cupola I really like. It is just a 3d printed split hatch simple cupola from Mkahnd_Industries (on Cults3d) https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/interstellar-army-tank-cupolas cut down a bit and fitted into the standard leman russ style rounded Imperial guard cupola, with the ears cut off the rear of it and the space where the single piece hatch slots in filled with miliput, you get a heavily armoured look, lots of periscopes and obvious fittings for add-ons and fixtures, and you have two relatively small hatches Which I think looks great. Optics above the main gun are from ramshackle games, I think they fit qute well there and they are currently just bluetacked in place and I might sacrifice the optical device on the left hand side of the turret for a panoramic multi-spectral sight.(Spacemarine one from the old command vehicle upgrades sprue). And lastly(and most obtrusively) I added a huge protective gun mantle made with plasticard and a lot of milliput. Yeah, it's obviously supposed to be a massive solid chunk of armour casting designed to stop shells from damaging the mantle and the base of the main weapon. I think it makes the vehicle look more butch. The little hole drilled in it coincides with a plasticard box I built up alongside the main armament behind the mantle, and this is of course the co-axle heavy stubber! Because more dakka is good dakka. I think it is a practical idea and an amusing one at the same idea. And those ideas are the ones I always keep.

Karsk Pattern Baneblade updates
Spoiler:
So Hell hammer. Yes I extended the gun, basically becasue I had a spare bit of gun base sitting around and the hellhammer cannon fitted onto it nicely. I actually really like it, even though it's only like half an inch longer. And yeah turret is halfway though it's makeover into that of a Karsk Pattern. It's looking a bit ugly, but that is nothing that copious amounts of milliput and some sandpaper will not fix. Hull looks bad but it just wants some primer at this point.

Karsk Pattern Baneblade, as you can see gunner position in the hull wants some work, and turret wants prettying up, and we are onto details.

And another update, because I am insane. I have decided that this baneblade chassis should also have the option of being my 2nd custom baneblade pattern, the Havael Pattern Baneblade! So I have ordered a new hull to slot in, complete with all parts, and a new complete turret and backbin. So the following variants will include:
Banehammer Doomhammer Banesword Hellhammer Stormsword Stormlord Stormblade

Baneblade- Karsk Pattern - Massive turret, massive gun. Thick and extended cast hull.

Baneblade Havael Pattern - Smaller turret (regular sized) regular hull and a single colossal vanquisher cannon (the same gun used double in the Macharius vanquisher) The tank has this reduced armament as the regiment is predominantly equipped with Machaius vanquishers, so it has commonality of ammunition. Other than that, it is a baneblade and it makes up the numbers(and is the more common pattern in service) of baneblades in the regiment as a compromise. Ideally the regiment would consist solely of Karsk pattern Baneblades with no need for Macharius vanquishers or Havael Pattern Baneblades. But this is entirely not practical in regards to the rate of delivery and availability of the prestigious Karsk pattern. And this is the eloquent explanation I have of why I need to model 2x baneblade patterns, along with the other 8 superheavy tanks that commonly share the chassis in the 41st millennium!
The other explanation is I love modelling giant tanks.

And some more work on my destroyer tank hunters!
Spoiler:
Turrets and guns are from models and minis, I have cut some bulges off of the sides to give them a sleeker profile. Chassis is a mash up of 3dprinted parts from Neyma's hellhound proxy and his IFV which I got printed on demand. Battery pack is from a spikey knight's big laser cannon thing that I totally sanctified by cutting all the spikey bits off of and magnetising it to my knight.
I have some cupolas being printed and coming, so I will put them on and find a heavy stubber to give it. Layout of the vehicle goes like this: Front right hull, driver, front left capacitor banks, commander on right side of turret, loader/technician/ gunner on left (not sure if it needs a 3 man turret crew). Engine in back to throw it along at a decent clip. Armour is not far off of being cardboard. Autocannon proof on front, but you probably do not want it knocking on your sides. Turret is internally spacey for all the big lasery bits for the laser destroyer, so you can blast an enemy apart better. TLDR it is a M18 Hellcat with a roof and a laser destroyer, a real glass cannon.

Nice Work! And interesting approach to personalize your Baneblade variants. I like the lore of the Havael pattern as compromise solution to fill up the ranks.

The elongated Hellhammer looks good, but personally I think it would look even better, if the first cannon segment had a larger diameter than the second, so it looks like they slide inside each other during firing to reduce recoil. The protective gun mantlet looks alre pretty cool, might even get a bit longer if you want to go for the "Saukopfblende" look of the StuG III

Cheers!
I kinda wanted the Hellhammer to still look a noticeably larger calibre to the huge cannon on the regular Karsk Pattern Baneblade.

I did not want to extend the mantle too far as some variants, the banehammer, doomhammer and stormsword have really short barrels, and I kinda did not want them to be nearly completely swallowed by the milliput. I may still extend it to as far as it can go.

A small update for the nonablade project.
The Havael pattern Baneblade and Hellhammer!
Spoiler:
So this is a lighter modification than the Karsk pattern, the high pressure higher velocity vanquisher cannon is quite noticeable as is the lengthened hellhammer cannon and coaxle high velocity autocannon. Additionally I added a larger dustbin style turret(from ramshackle games) to the front hull of the vehicle. This turret actually has a better traverse to the right than the baneblade's hexagonal turret. I quite like the larger size of the turret. Lorewise I like the design. The frontage is pretty small, and thus can be relatively heavily armoured, and as the turret has greater internal volume it can have thicker walls and still have room for the operator. I also added some rectangular chimera hatches to the back of the dustbin allowing access for the gunner and driver. And a much less cramped situation for both! I wanted something different to the solid bunker like hull of the Karsk Pattern, had the turret in my bits box and well it just fit and worked so well.

So the standard baneblade hull turret for reference.

A small update on the nonablade project!
Finished milliput work on the karsk pattern baneblade turret and hull. And I decided to try a realistic cast armour technique, I made a mixture of Tamiya modeling putty and Mr Cement S and stippled that over the smooth milliput to make a course cast texture. I did not apply this to my first baneblade, Tyrant, but lorewise Tyrant was created in the most reputed forge in the Commonwealth sub-sector, so there will be quality and texture differences in this 2nd Karsk pattern baneblade that was created in another plant. Much like there was differences between M4 Shermans or T34s that were made in different plants in WW2. I did not go full Soviet, (in otherwords I did not take a dremel engraving bit to the milliput turret to really roughen it up before I started apply the texture, but I did stipple pretty aggressively). I also applied the texture to the completely milliputted parts of the giant SPG.
My plasma blast gun seems to be stuck in NZ post as it has not left that country.

Okay, so I completed a pair of malcadors!
These vehicles are very much assault tanks from a pretty prestigious unit. Although saying that they are pretty battle worn, having taken part in armoured clashes. I basically wanted a pair of Malcadors with turrets and pretty upgraded, so the hull was 3d printed from Tiny panzer studio, the turret is from Mortian, although the guns here are from models and minis, the track sides are legit FW tracks (from a pair of defenders I have decided to turn into assault transports). I gave them the Imperial knight armiger's machinegun, as it is a heavy machinegun, I had them, and these tanks are from the Commonwealth world of Thryn, which I have not modeled any units from, so it might make sense for them to be using distinctly different looking weaponry. The more standard weapons used in my forces are of either Klomn, Karsk or Calathian manufacture which are either traditionally the arms centers of the sector or have traditionally had closer ties to Ardus(the planet on which my forces are fighting).

An Update!
Some decent photos of Syracuse and Scourge outside!
Spoiler:

So my pair of Prometheius pattern Malcadors (Promethies literally translating to 'forsight') upgraded Mk 8's. These tanks are newly refitted and upgraded veteran machines. I already went over them before but will talk about the flags as seen in the last picture. Both carry flags of the Thryn Land Forces, the flag represents this. Unlike most heavily settled planets the land mass of Thryn is only small, with a reasonably high percentage of the population living under the ocean, or on space stations around the planet. The Flag shows the thin green strip between the black(of space) and the blue(of Thryn's great ocean). The skull and swords kinda speak for themselves. The Black flag with White Aquila is simply a friendly force identifier, to show imperial aerial units that this vehicle is friendly.

Tank Destroyer sand shields, I wanted to paint them in cauter scheme and you sorta require more vertical space on the vehicle to make it look good, also it is a desert tank, and sand shields look minted. Will add brackets and bolts and all kinds of things.
Spoiler:

Nonablade Project!
Stormblade plasma blast gun arrived so I wasted no time in cutting it up and fitting it to the tank! I will need to counterweight the vehicle's casemate, as it is a chonky big block of 3d printed resin. Gun is from Solutionlesn's Machaius Omega. Threw the back part of the resin cannon on top to try and weigh it down so that the vehicle does not fall in half.

I needed to cut it where you can see, and drill some holes in the bottom where the peg is on the shadowsword's casemate. I also put some big round magnets in to hold the gun level.
So pics of the gun fitted! And also in the wild, because the better lighting.

And lastly, another Engineering Grimprints Churchill!
This time a mine flail using insiration from the Churchill Toad and sherman Crab, there is a churchill Toad in the Australian Arms and Armour Museum Cairns, which is in my neck of the woods, so I went and looked at the thing and took some photos and worked out how everything goes together. The flail is a component from Artee Forge, it is meant to connect to leman russ sized dozor blade like setup. I quite preferred the traditional Crab or Toad layout. The vehicle is from an independent Klomn Armoured engineering regiment (inspired by the British historical 79th Armoured Division), and therefore I though it prudent for the vehicle to be able to clear lanes for the largest tanks commonly used in Klomn armoured formations. So here we have an example of the largest commonly used tank in Klomn armoured formations!
I printed a pair of the flail components out, and cut one in half, I cut about a third out of the middle of the second one and glued that between the other two.
I also glued the boom end on end to the other.
Now until recently I have been getting my grim prints churchills printed (as I did not want turrets or guns, as I wanted to replace those with stuff from elsewhere(Such as the turret here from Nefyma's kil-san tank)), but this one was considerably cheaper. So I bought it, and was looking for something boxy I could put on the front to mount the extended flail to. And then I realised I had these nice little sponsons...
So I chopped them up, mounted them on, used the weapon holding parts of the sponsons to make armoured drum shaped housing, added an armoured drive shaft running from the rear of the vehicle to one of these armoured boxes, and another from the armoured box to the flail, and added some hydrolic looking bits from a chimera bulldozer blade.

I posted it over in my thread, but it also fits here well and I don't want to leave Oldmate hanging as only one posting projects:

A bunch of new additions:

a trio of Rapier laser destroyer proxies. I got them 3D printed with a larger order of heads for another project as I thought they look cool. I can't seem to find the source of the file though at the moment. I seem to remember it was from some Renegade and Heretics line, as the drivers had chaos symbols in their armor that I filled with greenstuff.
Anyway, cute little thingies. A bit difficult to paint the driver, as they came as one solid piece each, but I think they make a lot of sense for the Askaris. And 4 light Lascannons should make a dent into lightly armored vehicles at least.

Next off: three further Sentinel variants
Strike 1: Minethrower Sentinel
The logic extention of my Chimera based Lamashu minethrower. Make fast anti tank mining mobile again! Lore wise that big launcher holds 4 cassettes with 4 tubes each containing 4 mines for a total complement of 64. It looks a bit big though and I have added a smaller two-cassette launcher to the printing files, which you can find here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6613504

Strike 2: Smokescreen Sentinel
Again the 3D files: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6621529 This is another variant, I dreamed up. A mobile smoke screen generator (the big thingy with the two barrels on the side) combined with a smokegrenade launcher (the smaller grenade launcher thing on the front) and a bigger than usual smokelauncherbatterei at the nose.

Last but not least: Electronic warfare sentinel:
The 3D files: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6621453 also include an approach to an advanced comm-array, but that looked just to big and to much, when I tried to fit it to the original sentinel. It's still a very crowded model, even with the smaller vox-pack from the old infantry squad. But I really liked the idea. Basically it is meant to serve as a range extender for the infantry vox-network (the Vox-pack at the side), to triangulate and scramble enemy communications (the "satelite dish" on top and on the arm on the front) and to serve as a drone port for three FPV drones on the "signal tower" (on its left side). Also note the modified Hunter Killer missile in the front which now doesn't get in the way of the door/sensors/hatches/weapons anymore. At least I never found a place on the old kit to fix the HK missile without getting in the way.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6620046

I cut out the door as I wanted to have it in an opened position so that the drone operator (from Anvil Industries, just as the drones) has just stepped out to check something. Also as a small detail it has a roman numeral "VI" instead of the two or three digit numbers of the other Sentinels indicating they are rather rare

I'm also currently working on a Destroyer Tank hunter with a strong red LED in the gun, so that you can see where it is pointing too...

Okay some more projects.
2x Basilisk proxies from Nefyma.
But I think you all might know me better than that.
So I got the parts to make them 2x Medusa proxies and 2x Oldmate's current obsession with tank destroyer kitbashes too.
Spoiler:

So I chose the hull without a gun here, as firstly, I would like there to be space for an engine in the vehicle, and secondly it is the same chassis I have on the tank destroyers I am also working on, from a fluff POV it makes sense that they are a family of vehicles. Everything is pretty standard, for the pintle mount they both have watercooled machineguns, which are present on other vehicles in the same division(my carnodon and carnosaurs) in the case of this family of self propelled guns/laser they are not expecting to need their machinegun as much, so it's more the case of an older gun being slapped on them to provide some air/anti personnel defence.
The laser cannon is evidently quite large. I imagine this type of vehicle to be more of a nashorn/hornise, it's not particularly fast or well armoured, but it's got a really really powerful long range weapon. It's a glass cannon, but it's a cannon alright!

Lastly, SPG interior.
Spoiler:

As I assembled it I was using a guardsman without a base for scale, and some things did not line up. The fighting compartment was too tall. A trooper could not reach something on the sponson, it was all too high, and the folding seats that came with the kit were like spacious deckchairs. I soon worked out that if the ammunition was stored on the fighting compartment floor then it could be used like a step to get to the sponson, so I made some boxes with plasticard and plasticard with checkerplate. I also added a pair of seats, approximately 8x8mm - the standard regulation size of a guardsman's bum, these would be the gunner and loader's travel positons. I added folding seats each side of the gun, One being occupied by the gunner. I also made a little crawlspace for the commander to acsess their hatch with a checkerplate floor so that they were not just hovering 2m off of the vehicle floor. I have not configured the medusa and tank destroyer interior, but there is an internal brace along the rear of the casemate which is used to support the commander's platform. it would be the ideal position for a hoist to pick up medusa shells and lower them directly onto the feeding ramp. And with the laser I just gotta add enough big battery capacitor thingies to make it convicingly capable of melting a hole through a battlewagon at 5kms...
I guess I will have to give them sand shields too.

I missed out the last bunch of images. Dang, that Hydra looks awesome. The missiles go really well with the guns and the radar system looks very cool. Do you have a pic of the turret from the front?

Regarding the SPGs: those turrets look massive! Reminds me a bit of the PzHbz 2000, but they look even bigger. And it is a cool idea to add this Nashorn-like Tank destroyer to your more mobile turreted tank destroyers. I can totally see that thing hiding somewhere and blasting away at the first big target that comes into view. That laser should give pause even to a Superheavy tank.

Finally finished one of last years project: a destroyer tank hunter based on an upgrade kit I designed myself. It is based on the Leman Russ kit + the engine deck extension from Kromlech and 3D printed parts shown here:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6548805
I also threw in some smaller bits and bobs on the side of the engine.

The special twist is, that I changed the files a little bit to get a whole all through the gun and the ball mount and let my electrically gifted wife install a powerful red, forward directed LED as well as a switch inside. The top of the tank is magnetized to change the battery if needed and the cupola is also not glued to allow access to the switch.
Here are some pics:

That's a heck of a strong LED, I thought you had a laser pointer in the barrel at first.

I don't see why not. The main problem is hiding the battery, as it is easier with a 9V block. But if I understand correctly, one might get along with a smaller one if one knows how to do it.

Okay, so the pictures have been up for a while I have just been a bit busy lately.
My tank destroyer project.
A pair of tank destroyers from the 11th Silvan Guards, Anti tank regiment, the 43rd Klomn Armoured's divisional tank destroyers.
These vehicles are from C(mechanised(A and B company are towed weapons, which are much easier concealed)) Company's 3rd battery and are often used as a high mobility mobile reserve, in defensive warfare they will react to enemy breakthroughs or armoured pushes, and in the offence they can be rushed into footholds to support the infantry against armoured threats whilst the mechanised troops and tanks can be freed up to continue their break in(gaining a foothold into enemy lines) or break out(punching through them) operations. For this purpose they are equipped with the Durannan Industries SP- 41 'Corsair'. The Corsair is armed with a laser destroyer in what would otherwise be a large and spacious turret, with the laser weapon sheathed in an armoured thermal sleeve.
Although the Corsair shares suspension with the rugged C- 092 IFV, it has received a larger and more powerful engine which has been moved to the rear of the vehicle, making it actually a turn faster than the venerable C-92 despite the added weight of the laser destroyer and it's banks of batteries and capacitors. The freed up space in the front left hull is filled with additional capacitors for the laser destroyer. The Corsair's armour is not thick, being proof against only auto cannons on the frontal arc and resistant on the sides and therefore it must be used from ambush, although the great armour piercing power of the laser does put it in good stead when it can take the first shot. As the laser is an inherently accurate weapon most sighting is provided to try to ensure that the Corsair gets the first shot. Provided reasonably clear atmosphereic conditons the laser destroyer can melt a hole through a battle tank at ten kilometres. A fully amped up shot would do the same at fifteen in adverse conditions, but leave the batteries and capacitors drained and vehicle unable to fire again and additionally in need of a lens replacement. This can be used with some success against truly dire threats such as assault from enemy super heavies and titans and it gives the division the ability to contend against such threats.
Whilst doctrinal purists might choke on the concept the vehicles are often seen with machineguns for anti flyer and personnel use, and guided missiles.

So the Corsair is really inspired by the M18 Hellcat, although being kitted with a laser destroyer it has considerably more comparative firepower, at the cost of versatility. It evolved by the same line of thought, although being a more specialised anti armour vehicle because of the availability of big powerful lasers.
As for the C-092, keep posted, I'm a workin! Not sure what it's name will be.
The name of the Corsair? I kinda love and hate coming up with names to be honest... so this was a cool name and the Hellcat was both a US carrier based aircraft and a tank destroyer, so I could give a tank destroyer the same name as the other US carrier aircraft of the day...
Also, these are artillery men, so conversely tanker helmets are acceptable.

currently working on a Samaritan Med-Evac vehicle. But as I have no good spot to basecoat apart outside and it is too cold and humid around here at the moment, this project will not cross the finish line until summer.

First off: as my sole remaining GW Chimera (traded the other one off to make room) has the "mid turret" assembly, I wanted to keep this style, but also wanted more "head space" for the paramedic to work in and to fit in a second stretcher. So I took the little backplate that always remains when you build a Chimera (I have 5 in my bitsbox), turned it around and glued it behind the driver compartment. Then I fixes sidewalls and a back from plasticard and found that the Valkyrie ramp I had lying around from my Skytalon made for a pretty good fitting roof.

Then I went to the interior and build some stretchers and patients from spare parts. Also used some Sentinen Flamer flasks which will be Oxygen later on, connected to some breather masks.

In the front I made a door to the driver compartment from the Chimera doors, added some cool looking devices from the Valkyrie kit on top and a big screen from some Rhino-part (I think), linked to the wall by a thick "cable" part from an Anvil-Heavy gunner arms set that I didn't use

The free side also got a healthy collection of parts from the bits box.

and last but not least a look inside to get a feeling of how cramped/spacious everything is:

I still have to build a little seat, maybe with crash webbing for the paramedic.
Of course a whole Chimera just for two casualties doesn't make a lot of sense. So I imagine this more as a mobile emergency surgery or the like. Something to fix the soldiers up enough that you can throw them unto a truck-bed and drive them back the lines.

I already ordered another Valkyrie ramp as well as a turret and add-on track armor for another Chimera that I want to build as command chimera in a similar style, as commanders also need their space. Let's see how that turns out.

Working on a pair of Ammit IFVs from Nefyma, with a few of my own modifications.

Firstly as Nefyma likes to give plenty of options I'll go over the configuration I prefer; Open sides with the torsion bar suspension drive wheel, idler and return wheels on display; although I did put them on backwards, as with IFVs, should have their drive sprockets located in the front. I prefer the hull without the gun, figuring that firstly, I can cover the front with stowage... and it can be where the engine is located. I also like the more basic BMP style turret, and the APC top plug.

Firstly the most durastic change was to the standard IFV turret. The commander's hatch was firstly set back on a bustle partly overhaninging the back of the turret and also being quite large for regular, unarmoured guardsman tank crew men. So I used some 3d printed split hatches scaled to my preferred size, and I cut the cupola bustle off the rear of the turret with a Tamiya hobby saw, chipped a small amount of material away to make it better fit the sihouette of the rest of the turret, superglued it in and patched it up with milliput. There was also a small hatch on the other side of the turret where I wanted to put some tactical markings, so I chipped that off with a scalpel and milliputted it back over nice and smooth. Aside from that I only added a pair of firing ports to the front part of the troop compartment, on either side of the turret, out of the way of the turret basket, being inspired by the firing ports on either side of the front of BMP 3s. I figure that if the infantry want to use it as a gun truck, they should also be able to add to the weight of fire coming out the front. This brings the already well endowed vehicle's number of firing ports up to 9, one out the back, 6 on the sides and two out the front. I also added some rails from Mortian's veteran tank kit to the rear deck so that the infantry in the back can use them to brace weapons off of, and of course additional heavy weaponry can be attached to these rails and fired by the dismounts. these were inspired by similar rails found on the rear deck of the German Marder IFV. Naturally I put a machinegun up there so they can really lay down the dakka. I decided to leave it at a single weapon on the rear deck although I really really liked the idea of putting two heavy flamers up there. The machinegun on the rear deck also means that with the standard IFV turret, does not require a heavy stubber at the hatch where it would be rather crowded, especially with my little Sagger style ATGM(I went totus porkus with the BMP theme of the turret), which was modified from the Imperial guard heavy weapon team kit and a cut down HK mount. I also got a Vickers light tank turret printed to size to be used with the vehicle for a second model of IFV. This turret has two hatches and would be more suitable for two turret crew than the smaller BMP style turret. It also had greater space to mount a larger more advanced Spacemarine HK, and a Heavy stubber to the commander's hatch to be safe. I would imagine this turret might be more used for command, observation and fire support vehicles.

As these vehicles are from an armoured regiment operating in desert warfare naturally I also added some sand shields because I think that such tin-work looks really nice, and gave it a bit of mild battle damage prior to priming on the mostly painted vehicle by using a candle to heat a paperclip. to make bullet holes and a scattering of scratches and gouges from ricochets and shrapnel. And direct heating from the candle to peel back the damaged section. As I simultaneously really like the open suspension of the vehicle, like sand shield sand want to show off my paint scheme, I decided that some of they should be missing some panels.
The kit comes with many little details which look like they could be tying points, so naturally I cut them off, chipped them flat and glued some backpacks over them, as they are doing their jobs! I put a lot of stowage over the vehicles as they are expected to do some long range operation and prolonged campaigning. I added two jerry can racks to the rear of the hull, and a large drum over the back ramp. It could be a jettisonable extended fuel tank, or maybe even a water tank(I am sure the dismounts would rather be showered in water, over promethium if the thing gets perforated some shortly before they have to dismount...).
I gave one a hedgerow cutter, because I think they look fantastic. Rule of cool here. Maybe in the desert they are in there is cactus/thorn tree hedges or something they need to break through...
I also made some camo netting by cutting up an washing bag (which I brought for the purpose) and super glued it down. gave them my now firmly established toilet brush bristle antenna.

Cool work Oldmate! I never considered gun ports in the front. Do you know if that was ever done on real world vehicles? Also the rails to brace weapons on are a cool detail. As usual I have a lot of respect for all the though you put into your conversions regarding what would work on such vehicles and what the soldiers using them would come up with.

The tiny hunter killer missile on the left turret looks cute. I had to think of the "ex-wife" missile Justin Hammer offered in Iron Man 2 to upgrade Warmachine.
The wheel arrangement reminds me a lot of the Panzer IV, but I guess there were british tanks that used similar setups. Out of a lack of knowledge: why would one want the drive sprockets in the front on an IFV?

Edit: Yeah, my 3000th post... junior officer reporting!

Cheers Pyro!

BMP3 has front hull firing ports, they are pretty tricky to pick out, but are armoured ball mounts with little armoured tubes to protect the gun barrel. Here they are on the trumpeter model kit box art.
Spoiler:

@ 'Exwife missile' I was more thinking soviet era Sagger, but yeah I totally see it X'D
The Ammit seems to have torsion bar suspension, more similar to Panzer III even has 3 return rollers along the top! Definitely that panzer look.

Traditionally you want your sprocket in line with your transmission(you could have a more advanced drive system such as electric motors etc) and this is rather large and bulky, in IFVs it is located up front with the engine, if they were located in the rear it would be located in the centre of the passenger compartment. With tanks it is usually seen as ideal to have it in the rear with the engine, although the sherman has a drive shaft running from the motor to the front, and obviously the Merkeva has the engine at the front with it's transmission like an IFV.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Finished that half painted vehicle so here are some action shots!
Okay, so I have decided that I liked Ammit IFV and I wanted some for my Klomn armoured division. I also like the APC option as well.

Varanus APC and Sebecus MK2 IFV
The Varanus APC is the work horse of the Klomn military, it is used in it's standard configuration as a battle taxi and as a resupply vehicle to the front lines and for casualty evacuation. The Varanus being lightly armed and lacking a true turret has more internal capacity than the Sebecus Mk2 IFV which it shares a chassis with. The requirements for the medium tracked carrier was for the capacity for passengers to fire from the front, rear and sides of the vehicle with their own weapons from under the vehicle's armour with their own weapons, rather than emplaced weapons such as the Chimera's lasgun array. The primary advantages of firing ports over emplaced weapons come down the more extensive employment of automatic weapons in Klomn military as compared to other more lasgun reliant Imperial Guard units, along with the employment of special weapons from under the vehicle's armour. The chassis also has four large hatches above the troop compartment for the infantry to be able to fire from, and rails are placed around the rear thrid of the vehicle. The rail does not extend further forwards as not to interfere with the turret weapons. The rails around the rear deck are intend to provide supports for the infantry to rest their weapons on when the vehicle is stationary, and to also provide a rail to mount heavy weapons to such as heavy machineguns, or heavy flamers.
In the front of the chassis, is the vehicle's engine and driver. The Varanus is commonly armed with a single heavy bolter on a pintle mount, whilst the Sebecus is usually armed with either a low pressure gun, for providing close support to the infantry or an automatic cannon to supress and kill infantry with a coaxle heavy bolter.

This vehicle is of the Silvan Dragoons, a mechanised infantry regiment of the 43rd Klomn Armoured Division. It is equipped with sandshields and an extended fuel tank for desert operations. Many vehicles of the 43rd Division are fitted with hedge row rams as they were found to be effective in breaking into thorn hedges.

Some work on the Praetor project.
I really like the Praetor, what is not to love about a giant, heavily armoured MLRS vehicle, but I also got thinking I would like a siege gun of some sort.
So my local tank museum is Aus Armour, they have both an M110 and a 2s7 Pion. And I thought that the guard does not really have anything bigger than a earthshaker in the gun department and that is only a 132mm, a medium artillery piece.
So I devised this monstrosity. I figured that the Praetor was the most suitable basis, as it has the correct layout for a giant Pion style siege gun. From there it was get a gun big enough printed, and make a sled I can slot the thing into the praetor's back with.
From there I dispensed with the armoured cover on the front and glued on a large hull plate I had discarded from my nonablade project, added the exhaust and 2x filters from Mortian's old Veteran tank upgrades kit. The main components I must do now are to attach a giant recoil spade to the rear of the gun sled assembly, and fabricate and add a hydrolic arm for reloading the huge cannon. Because short of having Ogyrns as gunners, you are going to have trouble handling those guardsman sized shells.
Lorewise it does what it says on the packet. Not a weapon of subtly. Simply put it is built to sling conventional munitions, doomstrike war heads and all kinds of shells a great distance and to reduce and destroy enemy fortifications primarily. But you know, shoot a biotitan in the face with it, and the thing is going to get turned inside out.

I like the hex scheme, looks like something quickly stenciled and sprayed on in a workshop before heading out.
Some nice vehicles. Hover tank is really cool, looks reasonably realistic, I think it quite fits the helmets and gear of your troops, and that wheeled APC is just plain neat. It has the look of a work horse. Might be a few decades older than the hover tank, but it's still an armoured box that can deliver it's passengers in reasonable safety to where they need to be. Nice work Cpt Jake

Thanks. I've been looking for a 'realistic' grav tank for ages, and fell in love with the APC model. It just says 'I'm a workhorse'.

I definitely had fun with these, and can't wait to get them on the table!
