Welcome all to the 69th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
Saints and Sinners: Faith plays a major part in many settings, whether it is show to holy celestial beings, dark gods or ancient monstrosities older than time and space. From Clerics to Chaos Demons, you entry should emphasise faith and devotion to a particular deity or pantheon.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of November and will end at midnight Eastern time on the 30th of November. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Yeah! Going for the same saintly/sinful sprue as Nev, I'll be painting the Penitent Engine, tho. There's already a bit of ochre paint on some of the parts, most likely because I had put too much on my palette and didn't want to 'waste' it, lol
You guys always choose the worst categories... ha. Don't really have much. Gonna go for fabius. Guy doesn't believe in saints or sinners, despite living in and dabbling with the warp. And is he a saint or a sinner?
Going to do it properly and paint him in sub assemblies instead of doing my usual of building everything and struggling to paint the hidden areas.
I’m going to paint the first miniature from my new Blood Angels army, starting in the Reclusium with the Judiciar model from Indomitus. I know it got a mixed response here on Dakka but I think it’s a great looking miniature. I mean that ridiculous executioner’s sword is just amazing.
I hope this counts, I have just started it tonight, but its a coat of a single color, if there is any problem please let me know and I will find something else.
Here's my proof pic and first bit of progress. The models are from the heresy labs redeemers range and i will be using them as a Vatican gang in Carnevale.
No saints or sinners in the eldar faction (unless you want to count all eldar as sinners for murdering Slaanesh into existence), so looks like I'll have to finally start painting my long neglected sororitas...
Are we supposed to have a representation of both a saint and a sinner, or is just one of those acceptable?

Either or both. Or something close to one or another. It’s more a guide then a restriction.
I have a squad of seraphim and repenta, and thought about doing a mix, but the sinners won out in the end. Easier to do a coherent squad.

I have a Celestine to do who would have been perfect. Unfortunately, I've already put several colours on her. :/ I could possibly do her Geminae bodyguard, I've only put gold and silver on those. Or I could just do the headswap battle sisters I've been intending to do for ages...

I have 3 extra sets of wings sized for primaris if you wanna make a primaris angel ill gladly send you one.
Various Imperial religious types. We'll see how many I can complete in the next month. (Spoiler warning: It won't be many. I have a lot of writing to do.)
I think I'll be going for one of the biggest sinners in the underhive (according to Cardinal Crimson anyway) and paint Kal Jericho. If I get time I'll look at Scabbs too
I would like to drop my hat in the ring finally after much lurking. I would like to enter this guy.....
I can't be sure where I actually got him, from a job lot of models most likely as I didn't even realize he was a Forgeworld Herald until much later. He didn't come to me intact, so the other parts in the photo will be cut up to fill some gaps.
She’s not a saint but she brings absolution to sinners of the Imperium. Usually at the end of blade, poisons or a blast from her pistol. My entry is the callidus assassin.

Go for the headswap sisters. It will give you an excuse to get them done. And we do prefer models start with only one color basecoat on them.
Well, I didn't finish in September, and I didn't even bother entering in October, but I'll go ahead and submit a proof for November. I'll be trying to get one or both of these guys done:
I figure a Primaris Chaplain and a Primaris Chaplain-in-training fit the bill for religious types. Honestly it'll be cool seeing everyone's takes on these models since I'm not the only one entering one or both of them.
So I will throw my hat into the ring with some Swordmasters of Hoeth... Dedicated to the sword in the world that was, I am going to be using them as counts-as Alarith Stoneguard which means that they have shown utter dedication and selflessness and serve the spirits of the mountains. Pretty saintly in my book!
Hello all! This will be my submission for the month.
This is very early concept, I still need to base the stairs and prime everything. I will prime the spider black and take an updated picture before I start working on the whole paint job.
Assuming Covid doesn't stuff up my order's shipping, I'm in on this! I have no proof pics yet, but I've got plans - something to do with 'lords in white capes'...
@Horla: Happens that way. Also happens that you finish a model, put it up on the giant computer screen and suddenly see a ton of mistakes that were invisible to whatever level of magnification you were using while painting!
Its been a long time since I took part but now back to painting regularly so hopefuly one of many.
Doing Magun Ra as my next piece.
"Ten thousand years after the Eye of Terror swallowed Maugan Ra’s homeworld, that
nightmarish realm vomited the legions of Chaos into the material universe, leaving a
gaping lesion in space where realspace and the warp could coexist.Whilst the rift was
still open and the armies of that hell-plane were spewing forth, Maugan Ra took his
chance. He plunged into the unreality of the warp and searched its malignant
reaches for what was left of his lost people.
Over the course of many adventures, as told in the macabre Bás-Finscéali lays,
Maugan Ra eventually found the remains of his craftworld. TheAeldari of Altansar lived on still, after
a fashion. Maugan Ra guided what was left of his craftworld out of the Eye of Terror
and led them against the forces of Chaos to deny them their victory. However, at
the war councils that followed Altansar’s return, there was no welcome from the
other craftworlds’ Autarchs for their longlost kin.
Though the Phoenix Lord’s people certainly fought hard, they were secretive
and unsettling, and spoke only in whispers. Of the Asuryani of Altansar, the same
question continues to be asked, though never in Maugan Ra’s presence – how could
any living Aeldari remain untouched by the predations of the Eye of Terror for so
many millennia?
"
So is he a saint or did he commit some sins ? You decide
I didn't leave myself enough time last month, hopefully this one's more productive. The saintliest thing I got, a Knight-Incantor. This model came with the getting started with AoS booklet, and it deserves some paint. I'm going to try out the Anvils of Heldenhammer scheme. Sorry for the bad lighting, I'm getting a lightbox soon.
That Knight-Incantor is a fantastic model, E3DD - that pose just sells the narrative amazingly well. I really look forward to seeing the finished entry!
I have one of my own that I really need to get around to painting....but not this month.
This month, I am going to do a chaotic interpretation of Severin Steelheart's little warband...well at least one of them anyways...I'm really excited about the Splendid Angharad (Fury Road is one of my favourite movies), so at the very least, she'll get done. Any of the others will just be gravy...
Nah hes a metal boy.
I think the previous owner dropped him.
I did my best to straighten it but I guess got used to seeing him him stopped noticing it. Will give it a go tomorrow and see if I can straighten it a bit more and uplode soem new pics. Thanks for pointing it out I stopped noticing lol.
These two are essentially finished. I'm going to set them aside for a bit and come back to them with a fresh eye at the end of the month. I'm not entirely happy with the NMM on the succubus, but I'm not sure I can articulate exactly what is wrong with it. Hoepfully a little distance will help.
This is very early concept, I still need to base the stairs and prime everything. I will prime the spider black and take an updated picture before I start working on the whole paint job.
These 2 are looking really cool, very interest to see these finished
I got as far as painting on shoulder pad earlier in the month and felt like I was going to get nowhere with mine but last night was a good session. Lots of bone and leather, the leather needs a lot of work though.
Quick WIP shot of the Judiciar to prove I'm still in this thing:
At this point, the Chaplain is going to be a stretch goal as I may not have time to paint him.
Finished my blood bowl beastmen who have dedicated themselves to Slaanesh. The colours are a bit too garish, only acceptable because they worship the lord of excess.
I couldn't resist doing a Pink Chaplain. Really. It was necessary. For science. This time It's acrylics again, I'll bounce between acrylics and oils again soon.
Nevelon wrote: You going to put squiggles on the ribbons in the wings? Or just leave them plain?
Amazing work.
Honestly I debated that for a solid hour... I kinda like them plain and wasn't sure how I'd feel with squiggles on em. I'm curious though about what you would do if it was yours to paint?

Hard call. I’d probably tell myself I’d go back and do them later, and never get around to it. And being self aware enough to know I was lying to myself. And then feeling like a slacker.
You put lines on the smaller ones, so it stood out that the big ones were clean, which is why I asked. As a chaplain, can you go wrong with more holy scribbles?

Honestly I think I'm just telling myself that I prefer them this way because the alternative gives me anxiety haha! Part of me is like "nope not gonna ruin it. It's good. I like it. Don't destroy it, Jessica. You like it like this"
Though you do bring up a good point... holy scribbles are things that are necessary. I might change the pics in a week... Maybe... if I change it. xD

As long as you are happy, that’s the important thing.
I suppose you could split the difference, use a micron pen and write some vaguely imperial words down it single-letter column. On the other hand, only really noticed when it was pointed out, so either way.
Ok, I am done. Introducing the Herald of Nurgle Drog'Lur, known to the Grey Knights and Inquisition as the White Worm. Very happy with him and especially the base. Also very happy to have him finished on time.
We have a week left to go, some of which might be vacation time for a few of us. I still have a bit to go on my entry (the WIP pic I just snapped was blurry, I’ll try to get a clean one later, preferably with more progress on it)
Don’t forget that you can enter at any time up to the wire, and change your entry as long as you have a proof pic of the new one without paint at the start of the month.
As another reminder, next month is the open round, so not topic, paint whatever you want. Still the 5 model limit, so if what you want is an endless horde, pick your favorite few.

Almost there guys, keep up the good work!
Cool.. I'm happening to be painting an endless horde of guardians so will pick out one or two out of the 30+ lol.
Maybe I will spend actual time on 5 I like the most and the rets can get the speed painting treatement
I'm making a trademark late run into the thread with my proof pic, like a mini-painting Frank Lampard, hoping for a fortuitous deflected top three finish. Apologies to the non-football fans who will be mystified by that reference.
I'm painting a miniature from the defunct Anima Tactics range, it's called Saint Hazael, and it's one of the oddest sculpts I own.
There are some interesting miniatures in this range. They're sort of based on a Final Fantasy style aesthetically, but they're very inconsistent in the quality. I've got loads of them. What happened was that the game was discontinued, before which I was only dimly aware of it's existence. Then one day I went into my Friendly Local Gaming Store, and they had a whole load of them which they apparently got for next to nothing when the game died, and they had them all heavily dicounted. They were all available for a pound or two each. This one was a special boss mini, discounted from £25 to £4. I bought one of each mini they had.
Lovely work. Really like carrying the gold onto both models. Sort of ties them to each other and gives me the feeling they are someone’s conscience made manifest.
I'm abandoning Cawl this month, he is still sat with his sprues from the proof pic I took at the start of the month ... he'll have his day ...
So I'm changing my entry to the Shard of the Void Dragon (still tentatively linked to Cawl though probably heresy to speak of!), super fun to paint this model, I thought it would be a nightmare but it's one of those models you can fully assemble and then paint without issue Proof
WIP
Had planned painting other models for this theme, but did not have them at the ready and could not get my hands on them either.
So I chose two Raging Heroes models, that will be part of my girlfriends Escher gang.
I swapped the leg bits between the two and replaced the flaming sword on the other model with a plasma pistol.
They are not exactly saints, so maybe they fall in the sinner category with their poisons and schemes. Their clothing is a bit sinful at least.
Started painting these early this week, so here's a grainy WIP as well:
A bit late to the posting party, but I am in on this! Originally I was going to try to strip and redo some old clerics I have, but, they need more time in the bath...
Instead I'm going with the Games Workshop free store model for November - a Sister of Slaughter (because I didn't get the Witch Aelf head...). Is she a Saint (Grand Alliance Order, heroine paint job) or Sinner (psychotic warrior considered extreme even by other Daughters of Khaine) - I'll let you decide.
Proof picture and work in progress (just needs grass on base):
Those gangers look awesome, Ezki!
I love your purple/blue colour scheme and I reckon the blue highlighting looks a lot like denim - I'd be really happy with it!
Nice SoS, Arakasi and I love that Shining Spear, Captain - great work all round.
I always love your minis, Vejut...you seem to have an endless collection of really cool sculpts that I have never seen before! Great work, I love them.
These three were the most fun I've had painting for quite a while. I really enjoyed painting them and now I want to do a trio of Nurgle sequitors as well.
Each character evolved as the project went on, which I think kept it interesting for me. I ran out of time to really smooth the blends out but I am happy with the overall NMM and crystalline effects. My camera is still over-exposing the pics but I can't seem to fix it!
Finished!
Good luck everyone and see you next month!
I'm a little embarrassed after all these amazing entries popping up. But I have only a little quick and dirty paintjob, because I didn't feel like painting the minis I had planned at the beginning of the month. But as I also don't want to break my streak of entering every month I give you:
Samwise the Brave. Not as adventurous as Merry & Pippin, not going because of the burden like Frodo, he just does it out of friendship and loyalty. He is even able to voluntarily give back the One Ring. If that doesn't say Saint, I don't know what does
@Jamie Shred really like how the colour scheme ties them together!
And so much other cool stuff this month, Chris56's Slaanesh sequitors are amazing!
Still have to take proper pics of my entry, I fear I won't get these done tonight ... feeling a bit under the weather & have to get up early tomorrow to prepare my course at uni, but if I'm quick it still would be still quite in the morning across the Atlantic - if this would be okay?
Anyway, I threw in a Rogue Psyker from WHQ at the last moment because assembling the Penitent Engine just wasn't penance enough :p
(proof spoiled below, obviously taken with GWs patented Potato Camera)
A late entry from me, just to keep the streak going. My initial plan to 3d print and paint some Sisters of Battle didn't quite get done to a standard I was happy with, so instead I'm falling back on some minis panted earlier this month, a set of Witch Hunters from Titan Forge... well technically the minis are Vampire hunters, hence the stakes ect, but Sigmar tells me they work just as well on of unrepentant sinners of all stripes...
Definitely a style over skill entry, my ongoing eye troubles are still getting in the way of any real neatness so I'm just trying to inject as much mood/atmosphere as I can to compensate, so the collection as a whole looks decent and thematic at a glance. Going to try a much larger model next month, see if that makes any difference.
Lots of very cool, thematic entries I'm seeing! I love it! Going to be a really hard one to vote for this month, I can tell already!
Another under-the-wire entry. I've been very distracted this month with moving and Vermintide, so I'm glad I was able to quickly paint this one up as a palette cleanser between my Necrons and KO.
An army which bears the holy cross of Jesus Christ cannot be beaten. To suggest otherwise is blasphemy. There must be war...GOD WILLS IT!
On the topic of timing: I normally wrap the old thread and start the new one before work on the 1st. I’ve actually got tomorrow off, but have an appointment first thing. So there might be a slight delay. But you have at least 14 hours from when I make this post. So put on that last highlight, wait for the sun to come out, and grab those final pics!
Remember next month is the open category, so paint whatever makes your heart sing. Or just needs to get out of the queue. Whatever; we don’t judge.
Good to hear - I was trying to work out how to fit in waiting for a coat of varnish on a base to dry, gluing the miniature to said (currently sticky) base, and taking photos into two hours, not to mention uploading the photos, cropping, adjusting the size, etc.
I've had a bit of a nightmare with the base. I followed a "simple, impossible to mess up" tutorial on painting marble. Turned out there's no such thing as impossible.

Every tutorial I’ve seen on how to do marble makes it look so easy. Every time I try it looks like trash.

I managed to get something that looks good following a completely different tutorial. This after I'd made a trip out to my FLGS this morning to buy a pot of drying retardant for the other tutorial. The method I used involved spraying paint through a dried baby wipe, and it was much easier and made for far better results.
Very glad you have kept your streak going Para, Mordheim was always one of my favorite games.
Lovely Work DV8, I like the transition of color from the darker dirtier feet to the lighter less dirty robes at the top, also a fan of the look of Great Helms
I hope you can fix your marble effect Felt, I'm sure it will look great regardless coming from you.
Heres a finished shot of my Sisters of Silence, I'm just happy to still be getting stuff in even if its not epic conversions or Jaw dropping painting.
I used this month's challenge to test some new techniques more precisely new paints. The black armor of the Centurion was done with oils
and I must say it was an enjoyable experience and quite fast.
Some great looking entries since last checking in! Here's my Judiciar wrapped up, wouldn't say he's a saint or a sinner, but he'll put you to the blade for anything he deems impure under his gaze. Don't have a proper lighting set up at the moment so they're slightly overexposed. Need to work on that. Cheers!
Judiciar Seras Vazadar; attached to Excoriators 5th Company, M42
Super late entry from me, I hope it's okay! I got a temporary promotion to store manager out of nowhere this month and it just ate up all my time.
Proof, take on 2nd November
Unfortunately the apostle's stave broke when I when to photograph it and I don't have any superglue :(
Was quite a fun duet project, I play Blood Ravens and Black Legion so practically inverse colours for their priests, Primaris vs Old School Chaos, Black vs Red. Really enjoyed this one.
Down to the wire and only managed to get one of the two planned models finished, but at least I got something done, amirite? Here are the final pics of my Dark Angels Judiciar:
I'm really happy with how this guy turned out, other than the blemish on his face, err, skull, and the fact that when I try to shade light colored robes it usually just makes them look like they badly need to be washed.
Overall this should be a great month for the voting, as there are a lot of seriously cool entries coming in!
It's a pretty weird model. I think the saint is actually the little girl, who is being carried by her angelic protector. Quite a cool idea for a character. I put in a photo of the marble base to prove that I did manage to fix it in the end. Not pictured are the four other marble bases I painted before I got this one right.
The colour scheme was partly inspired by the World of Warcraft realm of Suramar, which has all these purple and turquoise tones, with pinkish red leaves floating in the water around the city..
OK, I think it’s time to call this one. I’ll try to get the vote thread up sometime later today. If someone needed a little more time and I missed it, let me know. I’m flexible.
Time to start those December projects, next thread is up.
