Welcome all to the 86th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month, the theme is Reborn, Remade: From constructs forged from scrap metal to Space Marines enhanced by age-old genetic modification, many creatures find themselves remade to better serve their masters or achieve their goals. Your entry should feature such creatures as have been altered in some way to improve, evolve or develop beyond their original forms.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight GMT on 30th April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
List of entrants:
Hairesy: Raven Guard Sgt.

Right back in Blighty, here is Lord Cypher carrying the Lion sword, looking for absolution and forgiveness from the emperor of mankind.

Twice reborn, first as a Space Marine and then as a Dreadnought:
Had this guy gathering dust for a looong time now, got it when Dreadnoughts were still sold as Cybots here. Needs some touching up, but I'm still mostly happy with the conversion I did ~15 years ago.

How about a Chaos Lord, first remade by the Emperor's science as a Space Marine, then remade by the fell powers...?

Hmm, most of my stuff slots in nicely here, I'm thinking something from the dark mechanicus should fit the bill.
Probably this guy, but a little dog around may change that...

What is the base model there? I don't recognise it (and it looks cool!)
I have two options this month; my first thought was the recently purchased Thousand Sons Contemptor (shakes fist in defiance at FW last chance to buy!):
But then I suddenly realised I recently got something else reborn, straight from the nostalgia of my childhood, the HeroQuest heroes:
I'll see how the month takes me as to which I decide to enter.

Life was simple in the time before. You were born, lived your life, and then you died. Now, after you die, you come back.
I've been on a zombie apocalypse kick recently, so I'll be painting up these zombies from Project:Z this month. I plan to finish them all, and submit the best five for consideration.

Going to try to get all six of these guys done this month, and then pick which ones come out decent:
Oathsworn Undead for badgers and burrows, dead critters reborn into unholy life...
Am kinda tempted to join you in doing some IMEF Bulldogs or mouse marines though Mothsniper...

Cloned and biogenetically grown to 30 feet or more in size by the Robotech Masters, surely the Zentraedi qualify for this challenge. I'll paint some of their Regult battlepods this month:

Thanks - as a spur-of-the-moment conversion, I'm happy with how it came together. Hopefully it will be easier to see once it's painted up, but it's based off of the Blackstone Fortress Chaos Lord, with backpack and axe from the Master of Executions, lightning claw from a Possessed (the older kit) and a Corpse Grinder Cult head.

I was thinking maybe I’d skip this one but since I see a few folks interpreting the theme toward the undead I’ve decided I’ll jump in with this fella.
Bit of a putty monster right now. I made him for an anthro animal ghost-type fella. Fox-ghost w with solid looking weapons… not sure how I’ll go with the paint.

I am going enter a Raven Guard Legion HQ dude, plus four guys from a Legion Tactical Squad. I'm going to batch paint 11 models but only the HQ and four other guys will be entered, most if not all of the four should be my own custom Mk5 power armour made from the appropriate bits, GS, and a lot of drilling. These guys are all in one coat of black after black primer.
These Raven Guard are survivors of Istvaan V, so they have been reborn and remade in the aftermath of that tragedy. Hence the Mk5 armour, which in itself is power armour reborn and remade in the fires of battle. The Mk6 suit worn by the commander is a prototype as well, signaling yet more rebirth and remaking goodness. Also I chopped up his power sword and made it bigger so, bam, remade that as well. Now he's ready to rebirth that sword in some heretic chests. Sorry, I need a lot of theme to make up for the fact that these dudes are gonna be mostly black.

Poxwalkers for me. Humans that have been reborn and remade to spread the gift of Papa Nurgle. Also the models themselves will be remade as I picked up a bunch of used poxwalkers off of ebay that aren't to my liking. I'll start by cleaning off the bases of whatever the material is that is on them and reattach them. Since it looks like washes or contrast were the main paint used I think I am going to skip the paint stripping and just paint straight over it saving a bit of hassle.

I got carried away on the HQ last night.
He is now 90% complete. I know this isn't common RG heraldry, or even maybe HH-esque, but I wanted to do something fun with this model since it is really just a dude with a power sword and a plasma pistol. Also I'm gonna count this as a warm-up for the Lamenters badges I'll have to do soon!
Anyway, without further ado, RG Praetor with quartered armour and hand painted chapter badge. Also going to fix up the eye on that bird so it doesn't look like a dead chicken...

Raptors... with laser guns (amongst other things). Surely they aren't natural... I suspect some kind of uplift scenario. I think I'm going to take a page from Nevelon's book and do an update of old, finished model.
Back when Mordheim was new, I made a Marienburger captain out of Lucrezzia Belladonna. Well, the warband never came to be, so I based a D&D character on the swashbuckler I created. I always intended to make an updated version, but I never finished her. I guess now is as good a time as any.

Okay, got some work done on these guys too. Not gonna lie, these dudes are almost done. They're just troops and I'm not gonna go all out on half the squad or do one squad waaaay better than the other one, so... Get ready for a very basic entry. I should actually pull these dudes and enter my command squad dudes because they will actually get painted to a higher level, but I wanted to enter models that I actually customized to fit with the theme, so you're stuck with these.
So the Mk5 Marines are from the regular Tac Squad box, with some light greenstuffing, armour stud making and head swaps. The helmetless Mk6 guy is also from the Tac box, there are enough bits in that kit to make several Mk6 guys (so long as you don't use all the beakie helmets for another project like I did). The Mk4 marine is not the best example of a Mk4 marine because his legs are from the old CSM kit, but he does have a Mk4 helmet and torso. I do have another Mk4 marine but he is in the squad that is already done so, can't show him off here.

Reborn Crusader Squad WIP:
If you've seen my blog, made some headway on the squad. I started during third, where mixed weapons was part of the fluff and I've tried to continue this tradition with colors and weapons. I like the "questing knights" dynamic that is Black Templars, so each has slightly different colors and heraldry. Trying not to over customize and slow down too much (I do that a lot...).

Reborn and remade.
But remade by who? Why not have a little self reinvention.
This is my Stargrave Crew
Amongst this gang of reprobates is a Crontyr Heavy Industries "Immortal Series 3000" combat automaton, which the crew began to refer to as Dakkabot. After a generally successful expedition to Imperial Research Station 37, during which many zombie victims of Hastian's Plague were encountered, Dakkabot's APE (Adaptive Personality Engram) * appears to have continued to pick up further characteristic traits from its employer and comrades.
Unfortunately its employers and comrades are, mostly, Ork pirates. Dakkabot has modified its rapid fire weapon to include a large "bayonet" on which it has engraved it's motto, "Dakkabot Loves You"
It has repainted its legs to match the striped blue trousers that several other members of the crew sport
Additionally, it has acquired a hat that it is very fond of, and added several "tattoos" to its forearms.
Dakkabot has been spotted in several areas of the galaxy, most recently on an uncharted desert planet
(Basically I decided that after some Stargrave with Flinty, Dakkabot had developed enough of a personality to earn itself a new miniature)
*Not to be confused with the much derided "Real People Personality" system used by other manufacturers

It's just freehand texturing to make it look a bit more worn and rough. Though there are some very fine details on the print if you look close enough, it wasn't the intent of the lines. If anything, I was doing it despite the details in the print lol.

I tend not to take painting WIPs, but I figured I'd make an exception this time:
I thought it might be interesting to have a picture of pre-shading on Vader to compare to the (yet to be) finished model. You know, for science! I've been working on my black in the past couple of years and had some success improving it, but there's always more room for improvement.
Also I'd like to state that I really hate how we're running out of April now. I was happy procrastinating in peace and then that happened! Rude!

After I've spent an hour and a half (give or take, probably a little more) putting black paint on Vader, I certainly know why I wasn't in a hurry to paint him. But the big stuff is done now. Lot of nice work this month. Almost there! All done here: So this guy was a lot of work, but fun. Throwback to the old RT TDA captain, so I took a lot of cues from that. The shoulder pad is from the old “How to paint space marines” pamphlet as the markings for a lieutenant commander. This was the old RT rank of the second in command in the chapter (CMs were just Commanders back then) so I figured it would fit for the 1st company captain in the modern structure. The quartered tilting shield is from the belt buckle heraldry that was on the original model. Tons if little detail on this guy, as befitting a captain of his stature. I think this brings me up to 13 UM captains painted. I might have a problem... And a “Then and now” pic: (not for entry)

Almost done, but I still gotta finish the base and touch up some details:
Probably gonna have the pics of the finished thing up tomorrow, I hope that's okay.

JoshInJapan - IV looks great. Maybe submit a closeup of that ekg line so we can see it better?
Viterbi: I like the different colors you have going there.
Nevelon: Capt looks great, especially standing next to his “old” form.
Will try to take some pictures shortly for the submission.

Viterbi: That's a really seamless conversion.
JoshInJapan: The medical equipment on patient zero is really well done.
Mr Nobody: Is that stomper playing a guitar? Nice work on the rusted yellow scheme.
Nevelon: I like the old-school details you included on the updated mini.
I wasn't sure I'd get an entry finished this month, but I have. A classic metal mini reborn and remade in modern plastic - the Noise Marine.
Proof pic and more pictures in the spoiler.

I’m so close but can’t quite finish tonight. Emergency puppy vet visit cut into my planned painting time. Could I impose on the court for a short extension?

Has my support its a BH in the UK so don't think it will be too big an issue.
Heres my scratch built Warkopta, came out pretty well I think will put it on a flying base and take better pics tomorrow

I honestly wasn't sure what I would get done this month. I started off pretty strong in the first few weeks in terms of productivity, but really petered out near the last couple of weeks; feeling really tired and bored of painting 28mm and 40mm figures (seems it's all I've really been doing for the past few years).
I had a couple of MCP pieces kind of hovering around the conceptual idea of rebirth; my initial thought was Iron Man or Warmachine, but given that I'd already done Hulkbuster last month, I decided that to go a different route.
Falcon, reborn as the new Captain America.

Great entries from everyone so far.
DV8: That shield is on point.
Midget Gems: been a while since you've dropped in a crazy conversion, nice to see them return
TheLastTemplar: I like that heraldry on the sheild, impressive given how small those are!
Turaxa: suitably neon colors, and nice checker-work!
Also, final pics on my undead:

Thanks TheLastTemplar! It's my Sisters standard color scheme, but the wings really gave me headaches.
Your templars look cool. It's hard to resist buying some, especially since I could take them in a crusade force. They'd mesh well with my sisters and an inquisitor to bring light to the heretic... or set them on fire at least
Turaxa wrote:Viterbi: That's a really seamless conversion.
Thanks Turaxa! Although close up there are some seams to be seen Good work on the noise marine, it's a great mini to have some fun with unusual colors with.

And slipping in just under the wire, here are my final pics of my Stormcast Eternals Vindictors, mortals remade by the God-King Sigmar into his perfect warriors:
I really had fun working on these guys. They are some of the best Stormcast sculpts GW has done in a while. I've also been enjoying doing swamp bases on my Stormcast guys; it's nice to do a little more elaborate bases than I usually do.
Overall there have been some really great entries coming in at the last minute! I'm looking forward to the voting for sure.

Whew! Just managing to sneak these guys in! It's helpful to have these monthly challenges for motivation.
Decided to give these guys a full drybrush, and honestly I really like the way it came out. I may go back and do similar on my other black armor models as well as continue with it going forward.

@DV8 - sorry to hear your feeling a bit burned out. Seeing your entries is a consistent highlight of the comp.
The shield on your Falcon looks amazing. The highlights and sparkles sell it as super shiny.

I'm really glad you did get it done, I love your work and really appreciate your part in this awesome community of painters
More than happy to see you do a different scale or model type entirely, I'm pretty sure you'd smash it (in a good way).

Cheers Mate, I enjoyed this one. Liking the ethereal green on your undead badgers
Para normal allows at least a day for people to take photos, do minor touch ups etc before closing so get on it.
Here are my finished pics for my Ork Warkopta, I've put all my flying bases in a bag and can't find them so you will have to imagine its flying very fast across the sky, hopefully the backdrop helps with that (I think it turned out alight, still lots of highlights etc I didn't get done)

This one turned into a bit of a chore. Glad that it's no longer gathering dust on my pile though, it's been there for far too many years:

Thanks for the extension!
@Midget Gems - that warcopta surely is the fastest around love the flames.
@Maharg - I really like the sword blade. Good luck with the rest of the warband.
@ Tallandra - any completion is a victory! I like the battle damage and kill markings.
I managed to finish my entry to a certain level of finished. I had meant to do a bit of light weathering of armour plates and maybe a few more bits and bobs of highlighting, but time ran away on me.
Still, very happy to get a first tranche of happy lizards with guns into the display cabinet.
Group shot
Combat engineer and a support specialist
And my first try at a bit of fake Dino markings. The only downside of the stormtrooper variants of these models is that the tail armour prevents more markings… although thinking about it I should have put squad markings on the tail… damnit, maybe I’ll go back to them for some final detailing in due course.
Amd the mooks. A rifle-saur, a well armed duder carrying something that looks important (might be a medic, might not be ), and Ghost the albino sniper-saur
And finally, the 9 week old main reason I didn’t do all the completionist gubbins (not part of my entry, for clarity)

My eye ain't that sharp; I didn't realize you made an extra long version from two of 'em
Man, I remember when that kit was new. I bought a box & a Necromunda weapon sprue because the 2nd Ed Chaos Codex allowed for straight up Chaos Warriors in it!

Here is my entry. He needs a couple coats of matte varnish which should smooth out the texture from the ardcoat. Calling him done for now as I still have 750 points to paint before my next tournament.
