I want to buy the treeman now as it looks like I could plant Chia seeds in the hollow tree parts on the top of him and have a living Treeman on the table. New KOW army the Chia force of nature army.
edit: Nevermind. Found it. Wow, that maiden figurehead is big!
It's odd that I get excited most for the weird figs moreso than the fantasy staples. I didn't much pay attention to the last couple of Bones KS so most of the figs are new to me. I hope this one comes to retail most!
The idea of playing a mobile ogre shopkeep is somehow exciting to me. I shouldn't be surprised though as one of the only Mordheim figs I bought back in the day was the ogre with the wicker hamper on his back!
Is that the new bones and/or the siocast material? I'm used to the original off white and later black bones plastic but that grey is new to me.
Lucked out and snagged a treeman, pit of the ghouls, and fire giant. Threw in the dinosaurs because why not? I'm surprised the storm giant wouldn't see retail though, being one of D&D's classic giants. Likewise the blue dragon. Those aren't commercially viable but dire penguins and giant catfish are?
Some very nice releases. I've enjoyed painting several Bones Black minis this year. The sculps are great and not being metal they don't chip easily. I like that I can pick up a handful from the table and not have to worry about their paint.

I'm not sure that's the case. I think it's more that they have a limited stock from KS fulfilment which they're selling now, but I would hope the plan is still to put them in retail.
The female Storm Giant for Bones 6 however was advertised as a KS exclusive and may not see retail.
Pity they're going in on the 3D printing trend. I always appreciated the older miniatures and sculpts, but this 'bait and switch' on the Kickstarter has damaged my trust in them. Anyone have any experience with anything confirmed 3D printed by them, not just the Bones USA material?
I don't have any of their 3D printed minis, but I watched a recent tour video of their manufacturing facility. They had one of the free-standing Asiga printers in there, which run like $25k and are absurd in terms of quality. If they are printing to manufacture I would bet they are using that with some high end flexible resin. I think Excellent Miniatures in Germany uses the same suite of machines and I have only heard good things about the quality.
You know what they say, February comes in like an overladen henchwoman and goes out like Storm Giant (I hope!), and so Reaper's February freebie (with a $40 order) is Marine the overladen henchwomen!
The_Real_Chris wrote: Is there a complete bones stockist in the UK? Would love to get that Ogre.
If you're referring to the ogre I posted above a while back, it's kickstarter only still to my knowledge and not yet available at retail. I'm not entirely sure it will ever be either as I don't believe all bones KS'ed models make it to retail by default.
I always regretted not getting the troll bridge set as part of the kickstarter. Gutted if it never comes to retail proper.
I've also got a use for the mermaids from bones 5 but they only seem to be available as part of the whole expansion set, which comes in at a whopping £272!
And the beat goes on. One thing I see this month is that Reaper seems to be moving towards larger packs of models, perhaps to reduce SKUs.
First off some henchmen, the 10' pole guy alone is worth the price.
Hmm. The 10' Pole would make a great name for an Eastern European supervillain.
And with them comes some henchwomen. The wheelbarrow woman is the clear winner here.
Then some Yokai. No Umbrella Demon though.
And some fancypants Elementals. Earth, fire and water but no air, because air sucks! Such a loser element.
And some construct/golem types.
This is an odd one, Dreadmere personas. I'm not sure when you'd need a druid, a vampire, a hunchback necromancer and whatever the other guys are, but if you ever do... there you go.
Some Mouseling adventurers, not my thing but they keep making them so they must sell no?
And last but not least a pizza dragon. If you ever need a pizza dragon.
For me the stand outs are the two hench sets but the personas are definitely a possible maybe as well.
I got that henchman set a year ago. It's a single box of all 13. Very nice. It's the Bones black, which is not a bad material. It not God's own material, Metal but it's fine for most use cases.

Lotta my former GFs called me that.
I'm very tall and thin. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Officially she is female porter with wheelbarrow. There is also link girl and hedge mage in the set. I'm guessing hedge mage is higher level than hedge wizard.
The dreadmire group are all great stand ins for npcs in curse of strahd. Very clever as that module is super popular and suffers from not having good miniatures available
KidCthulhu wrote: I'm partial to the Tengu and the Kappa with the biwa, personally.
You got me to take a second look at them. The Tengu is nice, but that kappa has great detail and character, and the Biwa puts it over the top. You have good taste.
Looks like a couple more snuck out. (Huh, spell check does not recognize snuck as a word and suggests sneaked... but it does recognize Klingon as a word).
Anyway...
You can use this model for a while as a Dire Crocodile Then later as a Were Alligator.
So I have had this guy in metal to be converted into some kind of cyber gladiator, where he's been sitting for like 10 years. Point being good figure and I have more money than time.
Harpy, so you can finally reenact all those debates in Dragon Magazine about how Harpys reproduce. (Note this was finally settled in one of Gary Gygax's Gord the Rogue books).
A *ahem* "Mocking Beast" which you can use to preenact that scene from the D&D movie.
Nathavarr the Ravenous, Great Dragon. Yeah I know how he feels, it's like when someone calls an 11:30 meeting and it runs to like 1. I mean who does that?
Agramon the Pit Fiend who I also have in metal. And I'm like 90% sure he's painted so I don't feel bad.
Kid_Kyoto wrote: Looks like a couple more snuck out. (Huh, spell check does not recognize snuck as a word and suggests sneaked... but it does recognize Klingon as a word).
You should dump your spellchecker in the harbor with all the rest of its unamerican ilk, then.

Do we know how large it is? Out of curiosity. Crocodiles aren't exactly small and have a hard time fitting on an RPG map at the same scale as the adventurers (speaking with Pathfinder in mind here). because of how flat and long they are. But I'd be interested if the sculpt isn't constrained by a need to fit on a grid.
Thanks. It's not like I need another crocodile at them moment, but I like to pay attention to Reaper for the odd, plain old animal they make. Always good to have a source of those and know what to expect.

Maybe it's a Pygmy Dire Crocodile? Or a Midget Were Alligator? But if it turns out to be large enough scale wise, then it could be a gargantuan pygmy Dire Crocodile, or Half-giant Half-Gnomish Were Alligator.

Perhaps, certainly retails aren't impressed with the myriad of Wizkids SKUs

I prefer representative members of the species over rationalizing things like that. I try to avoid things like my juvenile delinquent carnotaurus who is even too small for an adult if you stick it with 25mm models, let alone go with a scale that's more popular these days.
Kid_Kyoto wrote: And the beat goes on. One thing I see this month is that Reaper seems to be moving towards larger packs of models, perhaps to reduce SKUs.

The henchpeople arent packaged for retail. I think they're just KS leftovers, like the three Elemental Scions (which don't include the djinn for some weird reason). That set is already out as well.

If it's the same as the metal one I have, it fits pretty well on a 2x2 square base, at least diagonally. There's some overlap at the corners, but generally not enough to be an issue for placing minis around it.
And we're back! This month is a return to form for Reaper with a crapton of weird random stuff from pirates to mecha to a gnome accountant you're pretty much guaranteed to find something you want to take home!
For starters we have some classics, beloved figures from countless fish tanks and Pirates of the Caribbean rides, skeleton pirates!
The great thing about Skeleton Pirates is that, if you don't want to use them as undead you can convert them to ordinary pirates with just a bit of green stuff. Simple really. It's like getting two models for the price of one!
Yeah they look like they're having a good time but won't the rum just fall through their rib cages? Why does that bother me more than skeletons walking around in general?
And one Fleshy Pirate, who can join your Skeleton Pirates with some quick filing. Again it's like two for the price of one!
A bat swarm, just the thing if you want to recreate the opening of Scooby Doo Where are You on the table top.
A bit late for Halloween but still a good figure.
I just love everything about these two. The only thing that could be better is if the treasure chest was a mimic.
CAV the 10mm mecha game gets some plastic reinforcements.
It's a nice gunship but the fixed mounted chain guns bug me, especially since they're mounted just over the crew compartment.
The Mastodon tempts me, I was always a fan of Macross' MAC II Monster, the walking battleship turret and this comes close. At 56mm tall it can be a robot support unit in a 28mm game with no problem. It even comes with several weapon options.
Similarly the 55mm wide, 32mm long Scorpion can fit into many 28mm games.
So there we are, some nice models, some mad ones and some unique ones. A good month overall.
The mechs look nicely done. Is Dualcast some new material/method they're using like Siocast?
edit: Wow... Reaper's casting processes continue to multiply. Traditional Metal, pvc Bones, Bones Black, and Siocast (is that Bones USA?) I knew about but in addition to Dualcast (two of the others above combined?) they're also using 3d prints as well apparently according to their latest KS update.
In addition to injecting in Bones Black and Bones Classic, and our Bones USA Siocast process, some of the prints for Bones 6 will be 3-D printed miniatures. We have been successfully testing our new printers with some of our new monthly promotional models and we are very pleased with the quality and results.
Reaper really can't just release a normal ass pirate can they? They have approximately 500 of them, and all of three aren't holding a chest, standing on a chest, drinking, or standing on a chest while drinking.
I know April is almost over but hey better late than never right?
This month's freeby is Tork, Bloodclub Bugbear which just raises so many questions. Is his name Tork who is a Bloodclub Bugbear (as opposed to what? Skullclub Bugbears?) or is it like Bloodclub Tork but they're writing his surname first. Maybe the club is not referring to his bludgeon but to the social organization he is a member of?
Anyway he's a nice beastial figure, a bit too cartoony for me though, he looks like the sort of fellow who should be giving ninja turtles a rough time.
Then we have a slew of Greek-inspired figures from the last kick starter.
A Mobil logo
A Hippogryph which can be differentiated from a Griffon in that the Griffon has the hindquarters of a Lion while a Hippgryph has the hind quarters of Hippopotamus.
A Nemean Lion which can be differentiated from African Lions by the shape of mane, the coarseness of the fur and the fact that it can't be injured by mortal weapons.
And finally a Cloud Giant who would make for a passable Hera, or maybe Athena with a weapon swap. Still no sign of the Storm Giant I want but hope springs eternal.
And in non-Greek news...
Mysterious cloak dude
Mystertious cloak dudes
Deep Gnome Rangers, I just love that their shields are apparently made from mushroom caps.
A Winter Wolf, which can be differentiated from an ordinary wolf but the coloration of the fur, the thickness of the pelt, and the fact that it can breathe a 10'x50' cone of cold 3x a day.
And finally 'Scrub' the mongrel man. Mongrel Men were an obscure D&D race that were mixes of whatever. 1/4 Dwarf, 1/4 orc, 1/8 deep gnome, 1/3 lizard man, 1/5 human etc. I just love that he's sharpening up a meat cleaver. And he has the best fluff text yet.
Chop's Skullery is a bustling kitchen in Brinewind that is open from dawn until midnight, at which time the shop closes up tight as a drum, and any hangers-ons are chased off with a rolling pin, skillet, or cleaver. A tight-knit gang of halflings, gnomes, and dwarves runs this business. This band of small fry tirelessly waddles about, cooking up great bucketfuls of tasty and nourishing chowders, skewers, and other popular street foods.
Scrub is the ugliest of the lot, a mongrelman who keeps the kitchens cleaned and cutlery honed.
The atmosphere of the Skullery is much like a beehive, with the workers busying themselves until they're covered in gravy and drenched in sweat; they say it only adds to the flavor of the food! All workers chide, kid, belittle, and ridicule one another as they work. Occasionally a fight breaks out, but Stub puts an end to it quickly, usually by peeling the brawlers apart by the ears. All workers refer to themselves as “Cousin” and all claim to be related, albeit distantly. In Scrub's case, very distantly.
So another cool month. Scrub definitely goes on the want list. Along with the Cloud Giant.
The pair of Mysterious Cloak Dudes were made in Bones White for part of the 2nd Kickstarter I think. I have them, and have painted them up. They've been helpful as cultists or evil wizards in everything from the pseudo-medieval world of Frostgrave to the pseudo-medieval grim darkness of the 41st Millenium.
Found some 3d printed reaper stuff in the wild--quality is pretty good, only real tells are some leftover support nubs, especially on the bottom of the base:
This month's freeby is Grushnal, Ragged Wound Orc. I don't see any ragged wounds on the model but I suppose it could be on his back, or maybe we're supposed to paint the ragged wound on. Point being, if you ever wanted an orc with a ragged wound, now is the time.
Blue dragon for $30, who can also be used as an Azure Dragon or even a Sapphire Dragon if your paining skills are up to the task.
A Dragon Turtle who combines the speed and agility of a turtle with the swimming skills of a dragon.
And then some more staples
Zombies
Goth Chick
Preppie chick
Mysterious cloak dude
Mysterious hat dude
Barbarian Warlord
COVID tester for Storm Giants
I have these guys in metal and love them, so much character. IIRC he was originally sold as a grave robber but he's since cleaned up his act and is now a licensed grave digger. Whether he's putting bodies in, or taking them out, he's the guy to dig your graves for you.
So there we go, there's a few more on the site, I think just about everything this month is a reissue in Bones Black (the good Bones) that was already out in Bones or Metal.
I have these guys in metal and love them, so much character.
Yep, really characterful minis. The big fella carrying the coffin is my current Ogre for classic Warhammer Quest. Many a hapless Barbarian has been summarily squished by a 2D6-wounding coffin slap. And then stuffed into the coffin, which doubles as a handy lunchbox.
He may get inducted into a Mordheim Undead warband as official vampire bed carrier.
Ah June, the month of Dads and Grads, the start of the lazy hazy days of summer, those days of soda and pretzels and beer.
And turtles of course.
This month's freeby is Waspnettle Lizardman Archer, who can also be used as a lizardwoman if you're so inclined.
We get some more metals now in Bones USA. The Courtesans seem useful, same with the scribe.
One of the strengths of Reaper is how they defy expectations. For example in this Cooper and Smith set, the dude with the barrel is actually named Smith while the lady with the hammer is named Cooper.
On the monster side we have one of the scariest releases yet, Vampire the Masquerade LAPRers, some of them are really way too into it.
2 Ghouls and Ghast. But which is which? And what is the difference? Honestly it's not worth looking through my 30 year old monster manual to find out.
One of the cool things Reaper does is their 'invisible' wraiths which are just empty suits of clothes or armor. Except when it comes to women. Women get bodies. Because they know what side of their bread is buttered.
The politics of race and fantasy RPG is a complex topic fraught with potential landmines. While I welcome inclusivity I don't think it was necessary to specify that this is a 'Moor' troll, surely this figure could be used to represent trolls from across the MENA region or even the whole of the Mediterranean.
Never talk to me or my son again.
And finally after last month's false dawn, the Dragon Turtle has finally arrived in all his glory. Dragon Turtle is protector of planet and friend to all children everywhere!
I think reaper makes some really neat monsters, like their trolls and that turtle. But gosh their female minis are just atrocious with their ridiculously skimpy outfits.
In the process of moving cities and countries again but still time for a Reaper update!
This month's freeby is the Honeythorne Knight, I truly Bee-lieve I must Hive this miniature. This is a 3D print rather than Bones for what it's worth.
First off several adventurers and monsters, some of them I think are exports from Metal , all useful. The Familiars probably most of all.
I've heard that metal models are vanishing one by one so if there is metal model you want it might be a good time to pick it up.
Good to see Lady Pole D'nse living on as a Bones model.
I love that the Elf Chronicler has an electric guitar and, I assume, must learn lightning bolt spell to play anything. As an Elf Chronicler I assume her songs basically go...
Legolas saved the day,
Because he is go great
Frodo helped a lil bit
Before he cleaned his plate
A very nice pit fiend, because sometimes you just need to go with the classics.
And finally we have that infamous Lovecraftian horror Narcolepsy. I'm so glad this finally came out after that unfortunate incident where the sculptor clawed his own eyes out screaming of colors out of space.
So another month down, I know I already got some of these in Metal so it's good to see they will continue in production. Can't say that I'm going to pick up the Bee Knight but the Elf with the Electric Guitar goes on my list.
I'm glad to see some of the older line coming to Bones USA as they just weren't that good in OG bones and while I know I have a few in metal I want to see how good Reaper's thermoplastics are on human sized stuff so I might pick some up this year.
Summer is gone, Autumn has arrived, the temperatures have plummeted below 90 degrees (32 Euro degrees) and Reaper Con is over.
So...
More stuff!
One interesting new thing is gaming books for some of the settings referred to in their models, Brinewind and Barrowgate. The models for both lines have been cool and the books are pretty affordable, might be worth throwing one or two in an order.
On the model side the War of the Casting Mediums continues with more 3D printed models coming out. A half-orc rogue, elf bard and barbarian with the truly epic name of Kreed Bloodbeard. I am shocked GW hasn't already used that name for a Space Wolf character.
And a Tiki Shark to go with your wereshark pirate army, proceeds going to victims of the Maui wildfires.
The Morbid looks suspiciously like the Gith-something-or-anothers from the old Fiend Folio who were of course arch enemies of the Gith-something-or-something-elses from the same book.
Sophie, Reaper's soul-sucking spokesdemoness gets 2 new avatars, a Demoness Druid (wait, wouldn't she have to be True Neutral to be a Druid?) who would work pretty well as a normal Druid if you leave the wings off.
And a Librarian. The Librarian goes right on my want list, because she's an awesome model. Not because of any fetish or anything. How dare you imply that.
Two more big dragons slip out, one is described as Foul, the other as Wicked, I think we will have no trouble telling which is which.
And finally there's a memorial miniature for Ed Pugh, Reaper's CEO who passed last year cast in the power of the one, true casting medium, raw, molten METAL
The fact that the memorial miniature is a Necromancer raising the dead makes me wonder if someone didn't think about this enough, or thought about it way, way too much.
Anyway that's this month (and a bit of last month) done. A cool demon librarian, a very decent demon druid, an addition to the Wereshark army and some other cool bits.
As a reminder each October Reaper has some cool models and freebys for Halloween, so that's something to look forward to.

(Still no Storm Giant though )
My understanding is that Mr. Pugh sculpted most or all of the original skeleton miniatures Reaper produced, so it's a reference his work.
The Morbid looks suspiciously like the Gith-something-or-anothers from the old Fiend Folio who were of course arch enemies of the Gith-something-or-something-elses from the same book.
Right book, wrong monster; they're Meazels. The hair style and the garrote confirm it
$30 for a 300mm fire demon (~12 inches in America) so that's about a dollar a centimeter which ain't half bad.
And another $30 for a Wyvern. The site says this is also 300mm which seems right but now that I think about it makes me wonder if the fire demon height is correct. Is that guy really a foot tall?
Skeletons
And more skeletons
And a skeleton halfling who wins the week! I love that he has a meat cleaver, I can just seem him hacking up adventurers for a stew but then it all just falls out of his little rib cage!
Some are rereleases, I'm sure I can find at least one model available in metal, white bones and Bones USA, but there are plenty of new ones like the demon and dragons above.
adamsouza wrote: I like the concept of Bones USA, but aren't they essentially just re-releasing the same models with higher prices?
Traditional bones is a garbage material though, and bones USA figures are much closer to actual metal/resin casts in terms of crispness/detail. You may as well be comparing a gummy bear to an actual mini.
I have a few of the original bones minis. I cannot bring myself to finish painting them. They are in no way comparable to the Bones USA and Bones Black minis.
The Morbid looks suspiciously like the Gith-something-or-anothers from the old Fiend Folio who were of course arch enemies of the Gith-something-or-something-elses from the same book.
I curse you -- 'tis the season, eh?-- for making me scroll through the Fiend Folio, the one AD&D book that never fails to disappoint. And the artwork is so bad. No matter, the Meazel. White Dwarf magazine was interesting for many things, but its fiend folio section was not one of them.
The tribute mini is well done. I wonder if Reaper will do something with it for Halloween orders.
adamsouza wrote: I like the concept of Bones USA, but aren't they essentially just re-releasing the same models with higher prices?

Depends which version of the bones material you are thinking of. The early released used a much softer material than the more recent ones and the level of crispness of the detail has improved as well.
So I've been buying Reaper stuff for a long time and reviewing/previewing it almost as long. I can't say they never disappoint, because well there's only so much you can do with Dude with sword/Orc with sword/Wereshark with sword, but more often than not they come up with stuff that's truly unique.
Like this month.
The freeby is Kadarg Scarneck who despite the very cool name is well, a Hobgoblin with a sword. An odd choice for October considering how much cool undead and horror stuff Reaper makes.
Fortunately you also get their 'Ghoulie Bag'
The 2023 Ghoulie Bag contains a Bones USA "Gertie Gristlebreath" miniature, one bottle of Dungeon Slime paint, one bottle of Nightmare Black paint, and some Halloween candy! Hurry, supplies are limited!
Which is better than a sharp poke in the eye.
The miniature releases have some truly funky stuff, apparently the theme this month is drunkeness, which I guess does fit Oktoberfest!
Halfling Druid with his hare companion, no idea if he is drunk but he could be a bit tipsy. He does have a drinking horn on his belt.
Brewmaster
Drunken half orc who could also pass as a drunken half hobgoblin
Bouncer
Brawl
Puppet show
Drunken riverboat captain but who cares, he has a monkey companion who is also drinking!
Gamblers
And a flirty wench!
Interesting how many of these are mini dioramas with several figures. The brawl with its halflings and orc I think is the best of them, but the puppeteer is the one most likely to follow me home.
All in all a good month for interesting and unique models. Surprised there was no undead or horror (outside that bog witch or whatever in the ghoulie bag) but there's still time.
I'm not sure this is a brawl. I think this is a hunting scene. I'm fairly certain that those hobbits intend to eat that orc. Note the hobbit helping himself to some orc tartare. The famished foursome.
Remember, hobbits are like pigs. They will eat anything.
Some of those paint jobs are very muddy and indistinct-- black primer is the culprit I'd bet, or the photos are terribly lit. Not the best showcasing of the minis.
I don't know about D&D but Pathfinder has a titan mauler class that's defined by relative creature size, I believe. I was very tempted to make such a halfling character.
I'll have to keep an eye out for that halfling barbarian. The butter knife is a little puny and needs some beefing up, but the rest is spot on.
Free beta and adventurers available on the Reaper website. See the dropdown menu on the Reaper site.
While free adventures are always good (: the "old school" rules don't stand out to me from other "old school" D&D rules already out there, such as Dungeon Crawl Classis, Swords and Sorcery, etc.
Of course, if your RPG group is up for trying out DD, sure, why not.
Well the calendar has changed, the pumpkins have rotted and a new chill in the air marks the approach of Thanksgiving.
And while I personally believe in observing the Black Friday Accords - the Christmas season does not begin until the day after Thanksgiving! - others are jumping the gun.
Reaper among them.
I don't have much to say about Christmas Eve, Christmas Knight and Christmas Carol, they're darn good figures and if you want them this is the time.
They and about a dozen more Holiday models are available here:
As for this month's freeby, remember in Curse of the Azure Bonds when Alias the smexy redheaded warrior maiden teamed up with Dragonbait the Lizard Man Paladin? Did you ever wonder like, what if Dragonbait had a really hot lizard woman paladin sister?
Nah. Me neither.
A couple of box sets snuck out too.
Mossbeard the Treeman, not to be confused with Treebeard the Mossman or Mosstree the Beardman.
Julie Guthrie is really stretching her wings, sculpting a dragon victimized by the unhealthy body images in the media. Seriously, someone give that dragon a sandwich or something!
A killer ape, who can also serve as a carnivorous ape, or even a pacifist ape who's not usually like this but had a really bad day.
Reapers Spokessuccubus Sophie gets a new incarnation as Troll Slayer Sophie, just the think to go with Ogre Slayer Sophie and Giant Slayer Sophie.
While I am half convinced that the Astral Reavers are actually an early April Fools joke along the lines of the old Invisible Frodo model from years back.
And there we go, I didn't notice anything new among the Christmas models but they are very nice. Not too interested in another D&D clone, but if you are there you go. The rest of the lot is good, but nothing is an autobuy like the puppeteer or a new dwarf wereshark, but I'm sure all them will have fans.
Theme this months seems to be halflings, sure, why not.
A halfling rogue and ranger, not too many sling using figures out there. I always liked slings at low levels when I couldn't afford arrows or the skill slots to take up fletching myself.
A druid and a 'River Witch' who can, with some light conversion, represent a 'Stream Sorceress' or a 'Brook Mage'. You might consider using her as a 'Creek Conjuror' but honestly the conversion work for that is beyond my skills.
Reaper is also making a small return to the world of prepaints with the release of Sir Roland the Grey. I really like the subtle shading and highlights on him.
While Sir Guy the Red is honestly a disappointment. I would have to strip and redo him completely.
So good month for Christmas and Halfling fans, enjoy.

In happier news their Dungeon Dwellers RPG Kick Starter closed at $207k, of a $15k goal, so good on them.
The theme seems to be Under the Sea, we got your Mermaid/Man warriors, you Merwoman/butler royals, even a Little Mermaid for those whose formative years included a brief infatuation with redheaded sea life.
Or if you prefer life Slightly to the Left of the Sea...
All the sailors, fishermen, innkeepers and uh... Women of Negotiable Virtue, you could need to populate your shore-side town.
I don't which I like better, the Shark Butcher or the fact they have a halfling and half orc Lady of the Night.
I've mentioned before that recent editions of D&D have gone full on Star Wars Cantina. Instead of everyone just living in human villages during the Age of Rensfaires where Gran'pa tells tales of that one time he saw an elf, now parties are just as likely to have a Gator Man Druid, a Catfolk Bard, a half-demon Paladin, and a Ranger Racoon. So now you're covered.
The Ogre merchant is totally an NPC I will use.
"Ya wanna buy a vase? Opps, sorry, they break so easy, here you wanna buy a glass-oh darn, how about this genuine Phoenix Egg-aw drat!"
And finally in the Other/WTF category...
Mephits, flying fire imps IIRC, in clear plastic for some neat effects.
A chicken swarm. In case you need a swarm of chickens. This one really temps me.
Pizza Dungeon Animatronics, for the truly niche among you.
A set called "Don't steal cockatrice eggs!" which is good advice in general.
A very reasonably priced dragon.
And finally a female Landskir- Landsni- Landsend-, a female poofy shirt German sword person!
And there you are!
Something for everyone, whether you're interested in a pirate den or a medieval Chuck E Cheeses you are covered.
Thanks for the update! I ordered the two figs that I've wanted over the last couple of Reaper campaigns (even though one is horrendously out of scale for anything I'd need but I love the sculpt!) in my first ever Reaper order. Hopefully you have an affiliate account with them so you can collect your pennies' worth of the cut.
What was so good about Reaper Black as opposed to the others?
ced1106 wrote: > What was so good about Reaper Black as opposed to the others?
IIRC, Not as soft as the early Bones (eg. Bones I through III KS), and easier to paint black than white.
Thanks. I didn't know if the level of detail/crispness improved as that was a bit soft on the earliest bones figs I saw when they hit retail. I won't be driving over my minis so I doubt I'll need the durability of OG bones.

Definitely sharper detail. Bones USA has the same level of detail and the advantage of being made at Reaper's factory. This allows them to release models faster and restock faster. Plus y'know, made in the USA.
And it looks like some more snuck out the door.
Otterfolk! How many times have you wished you could combine the intelligence of Man with the waterproof coat of an Otter! Well now you can!
A ghost pirate captain! I feel like he should just be hanging out in the Pirate Inn not actually doing any haunting or anything just nursing his ghost drink in the corner.
Krampus!
For when you want your kids to have a truly traditional Christmas!
A greater basilisk! For when the lesser, basic, or great basilisk will not do!
I may hold out for a Greatest Basilisk, why buy second best?
Dance of Death! A quite reasonably-priced diorama showing the ancient rivalry between the Black and White Dragons.
Why does Reaper have to bring race into everything?
And finally...
The other day I had to talk to Kyoto Secunda because she has one of those artist's wooden hands and had posed it in rude gesture.
So I don't think I will be getting Bigby's Big #$%^ You.

Yeah, I suppose it does help when your main supply chain issue as long as you have raw materials is that Jim the caster is on a bathroom break down the hall. I can appreciate the sharper details though neither model I ordered will be particularly dependent on that as larger figs. Also, it's already shipped same day so yay! If things go well, it should get here on Friday.
Picked up the mermaids, been waiting on them for a while, as regretted not getting them back on the kickstarter.
The bones black models i've got are all much nicer than original bones ones. Its harder and holds detail way better.
Original bones was fine for large stuff, but terrible for humanoid scale stuff.
Not got any bones usa ones yet so can't tell how it compares.
Bones USA is by far the superior material for detail. OG bones was slightly above gummy bears in detail. Bones Black was like a medium tier CMON boardgame material. Bones USA resembles actual resin/metal. It has undercuts, pouches have distinct edges rather than just bleeding into the body, swords have an edge etc. Its more fragile, but actually worth the effort to paint. The few 3d prints I've received from Reaper have also been really nice.
I'm annoyed so much if Bones 6 is going to be in bones black, but I guess it was already in the pipeline when they started making the switch to Bones USA.
They may not have the production capacity for doing a whole kickstarter in Bones USA/Thermoplastic as while the KS could afford for them to buy more machines it could me too far out for them to get everything in time to deliver when they'd prefer.

That's pretty much a certainty with up to a thousand left in the wild. I don't know how many there are in captivity, but that won't bring it to immense levels.

Is it normal for Kickstarter only (at least currently) items to come in retail packaging? My ogre porter (yay!) in dark bones came in a retail style box whereas my ship figurehead came in a sealed baggie. I hadn't seen the ogre porter in stores (I'm been waiting for it FWIW) and I haven't ever seen it in their store which I typically check every time when our fearless mod updates the thread here.

I have quite a few from previous campaigns in retail packaging. Usually the big sets/items that are one to a box that they plan to release to retail have one. For example Bones 1 had Dragons Don't Share in a retail box from the KS campaign.
Yeah, I've seen a bunch at retail but I never know when or even if something will make it there as they don't seem to publish that info. I've been waiting for the ogre porter for a while now (since basically Bones 5 iirc ended) and I'm glad I got him. It just surprised me that he came in a retail blister (sorry if there was any confusion with me calling it a box previously) when I had never seen him offered at retail whether locally, ebay, or even the Reaper website.

I wanted to pick up some of their Christmas minis that I was regretting get rid of a few years ago, but, annoying, there's barely any on the UK part of their website.

Mighty Lancer Games have plenty in stock if you're looking for a UK supplier.

warboss wrote: Do the newer Reaper Black and USA materials have the same recommendation to *NOT* prime them before painting like the original Bones did?
I've used brush on primer with no problems, don't know about the spray on kind though.
Thanks to you both. I use a spray primer (typically Krylon as it's half the price of wargaming specific primer and has excellent thin and even coverage to the last seconds of paint in the can) and didn't know if I would end up dissolving part of the models. I'll probably try it on the underside/hidden pieces first just in case though. I've been curious to try gesso/brush on primer but the ease of spray for me (weather/temperature/humidity permitting!) has typically been the deciding factor.
The old white bones seem to have that tacky issue, even for vallejo/badger primers through airbrush. I havent noticed any issues with bones black, bones USA, or their 3d printed models.
I don’t know if it’s the same formula, but I sprayed a bunch of CAV Bones minis, and the stuff from the second kickstarter was not tacky while the stuff from the first kickstarter is tacky FOREVER.
Only bones models i ever had the tacky issue on was some translucent water elementals from the first kickstarter. The translucent fire elementals i got at the same time were fine.
I've used GW, army painter and halfords primer on others and all fine.
BobtheInquisitor wrote: I don’t know if it’s the same formula, but I sprayed a bunch of CAV Bones minis, and the stuff from the second kickstarter was not tacky while the stuff from the first kickstarter is tacky FOREVER.
This was crushing to me...
Then I discovered that Testors rattlecan Dullcoat reversed this... I sprayed this over my eternally-tacky, Bones 1 minis and was amazed to see the tackyness went away.
I had to spend through the nose for the stuff (four tiny rattlecans for $35 or something...) but it saved nearly two dozen paintjobs that I had assumed were just ruined. If you're able to try it, let me know if it works for you too.
Reaper thread on priming Bones Black and Bones USA. Short answer, prime them:
"I've had Issue where my base layer kept sliding around and it acted like a wash instead of paint. I gave up on not priming and the cost of time saves me later, as well as delivers consistent results. "
Personally, I paint with different colored brush-on primers even before prepping. Easier to see mold lines, or at least I can't pretend I'm not seeing them.

That's a great solution. Admittedly it's still likely tacky underneath the new layer of dullcoat but the point is to get the surface touchable without potentially damaging it and I'm glad that it worked.

I'm a bit surprised to see so many folks using brush on primers. No dig on them as I've never tried it though but none of the friends I've had in the tabletop gaming hobby have ever used it but I'm glad an alternative exists. Thanks for the link and I'll take a look there. I've already decided to eventually spray prime but I'm trying out my first attempt with oyumaru press moulding a part right now first for a magnetized conversion for my ogre porter. I'd like for him to have some weapons since I hope to one day use him as an RPG character fig.
> I'm a bit surprised to see so many folks using brush on primers.
Offhand, maybe they're painting at night, or are only painting a few miniatures at a time. Myself, I'll spray prime sprues and a pile of terrain, and would spray prime an army if I had one. But, if it's less than a handful of miniatures at a time, brush priming isn't any different than painting. Also, with pre-assembled soft plastic, the mold lines are more of a chore (eg. easier to miss) than sprue hard plastic. Not fun spray painting a batch of miniatures, only to find you missed those mold lines. I actually use colored primers as basecoats, going back and forth between colored primer and finding yet another mold line or gap.
FWIW, I was doing some hobby work today and decided to actually read the back of the retail box for the bones black fig I got and it says you don't have to use primer. I doubt that I'll go that route but since I asked the question I figured I'd post an update.
you don't for PVC generally (but you should wash it). The reason people use brush on primer is PVC can react with spray primer and become tacky that will bleed through your paints. It's very hard to get rid off, sometimes impossible.
I use brush on primer as I want my models all either white or black when I start painting them and primer is cheaper then regular paint.

I tried that and quickly abandoned it as the paints I used (citadel IIRC) just didn't get decent coverage. A quick layer of Vellejo brush on primer solved the issue.
Alas, it is now time to pack away this thread and put it next to our Barbenheimer T-shirts and Taylor Swift tickets as we say farewell to the things of 2023.
Fortunately an end to this year just means a start to a new year and new thread for 2024!
