I thought there might be a topic like this already but couldn't find one, so I decided to make one myself! This thread can be YouTube videos or shows, movies, or whatever.
Right now, I'm watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force on TVNZ+ for the 1st time in years since '04 or something. It's rarely laugh-out-loud funny but still entertaining and amusing. I was reminded of Aqua Teen Hunger Force again because The Outer Circle used Dr Weird from the show as his avatar and his catchphrase, "BEHOLD!"
The latest Always Sunny Podcast episode about The Gang Gives Frank and Intervention. I always enjoy it, they're all great, humble, nice guys despite thir success.
Dad and I just watched LA Confidential. What a great movie with an awesome siege scene at the end. Very clever consequential writing. Wanna read the book now.
I started watching Community. I don't think I have watched it, other than bits here and there, since it was broadcast. The episode "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" from the second season was taken down because some people thought Drow were blackface. It makes some of the later episodes a little odd as they refer to it ("You guys didn't invite me to p[lay D&D!") but if you neve4r saw it you wouldn't know what they were talking about. The season was even renumbered so it doesn't show a skipped episode.
Outside of that still a great show. I missed the joke the first time when a German character said "I only wish I had a word to describe my joy in seeing the misfortune of others".
I've been enjoying some of the episodes in "Cabinet of Curiosities" by Guillermo Del Toro. The first couple episodes were garbage, but there's a few decent episodes within the season. My faves have been episodes 3-6 so far, with the Autopsy and that Glo cream ones being my top faves. At it's best, the series captures that good ole twilight zone vibe
EDIT: Just finished watching. Episodes 1, 2 and 7 were stinkers IMO, other than that the series was ok. Each episode is an independent short story, each by a different director.

Is that a horror anthology or a cohesive series? You mention twilight zone, which probably answers my question (anthology), but I could of sworn it was a single story series, though I'm probably mixing it up with something else.
Adrassil wrote: @Ahtman, love Community. Has to be one of my favourite sitcoms up there with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
I'm watching the Redletter Media review of The Guardians of the Galaxy 3 right now.
I’m surprised RLM liked that movie. They’ve become so snooty towards films average moviegoers enjoy that it’s a shock when they enjoy anything produced for general audiences. If it wasn’t for Rich Evans and Best of the Worst, they’d be completely insufferable.

The Autopsy was damned good, the best in the show so far, with The Showing being close behind that; I was surprised at how normal and likeable Eric Andre's character was in it, lol. As a Lovecraft fan, I did like Pickman's Model; it was pretty entertaining but kinda forgettable, but really didn't like Dreams in the Witch House. That story was butchered to hell and back.

In all honesty, I'm a bit of an RLM fanboy. I was one of the few people who actually enjoyed Space Cop. It's so bad. It's good to me, lol.
Been watching more Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and it's funny to see so many memes that have arisen from the show. One was at the end of Yugioh Abridged, where Little Kuriboh had Yugi say, "Goofin' off Martian style! Wakka wakka!" didn't know that was a line from Master Shake when he was trying to pretend to be an alien for a freak show in the 1st season. Another was a line in a deep voice saying, "UNACCEPTABLE!" which was in an episode where they lampoon the hypocrisy of censorship, although I don't know where I heard that line. Could've been from Yugioh Abridged, too, as that has even Moonitie-based characters in it, lol.
Adrassil, I also love Space Cop. And I’m a big fan of their BOTW and Re:View series. It just feels like Half in the Bag has become less and less relevant the last couple years. And it makes Mike and Jay come across less likable.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and if you like Space Cop, check out Manborg.
@Bob, all good, mate. We're all entitled to our opinion, and I agree that Best of the Worst and Re: View are now better than Half in the Bag. I'll also check out Manborg.
While writing more of Secret War: The Annihilation Plague (which I just updated here in Dakka Dakka, shameless, plug ahoy!), I'm watching (or more accurately listening to) a Decoding the Unknown episode (yet another YouTube channel by Simon Whistler among his many, many YouTube channels) about whether Dragons exist or not (spoiler, it's very unlikely)
I have been slowing watching through Exo-quad and am amazed that this was ever on TV for kids. Genocide, race wars, and more! It actually seems strangely more relevant today than when it came out. This really demands a re-make ala Voltron or She-ra.
While watching this, I was also recommended something called: Wing Commander Academy. I was floored I had not seen/heard of this before. Only 1 season so if probably sucks, but I am totally going to watch it next.
Glass Half Dead's review of Kill Team Ashes of Faith and I'm glad I'm not the only one sorta disappointed with the new Inquisition agent minis in that box, in all honesty.
Finally finished Owl House after a long hiatus (I had watched up to the first half of season 2), but pushed into the rest of 2 and the fragments of season 3 that escaped the cancellation hammer.
Starts good, continues excellent and then sort of peters out with a moral anvil and a trope I absolutely hate
Spoiler:
crazy child-like being with unlimited power
. By the end they're basically just narrating the wrap-up.
So not the best ending, but season 2 and the first episode of season 3 was still pretty good. But you can really feel the spite at the cancellation, between the jokes about 'not having time for another 20 adventures' and doubling down on queer representation (season 3 starts with a coming out party) and demonic magic and witch hunters as idiots.
Probably the most interesting thing is Disney allowed the spite to air, regardless of the whining soccer moms. Fun show, wrong company, at least for now.
I watched this a while back. This guy is one of my favourite YouTubers. Criminally undersubbed, in my opinion. He even gave my book a shout-out at the end of the video!
Been watching this and this guy has to be one of my favorite YouTubers. He hadn't updated in...feth, years, maybe? And was wondering if/when he might upload a few weeks ago. And he finally has and I can see why he took so long, the level of detail, editing and research that must've went into this video would've been incredible.
I watched the infamous footage of President Kennedy on a computer in my high school library and I'll never forget just like I'll never forget accidentally watching the footage of the Christchurch shooting on Facebook. I thought it was fake at first before it finally dawned on me it was real and shut it off. My friend should not have shared it.
I've forgotten that frig head's name as have most of us here in New Zealand and that's for the better, in all honesty.
Sorry if my last post got a bit too heavy. But my cousin reminded me of the Onion, so I've been binge-watching a lot of their old sketches. So, so funny, lol
I decided to do something I've never done to-date - watch all of Star Wars (well 99.9999% of it*) in story chronological order.
Ep1
EP2
The various Clone Wars cartoons,
EP3
Etc etc etc
*I will be skipping watching the Holiday Special though. Seeing that crap once as a kid was enough for a lifetime....
Currently I'm about 1/2 way through Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.
Overall I'm finding this series rather tedious.
I've been watching a lot of Nerd Explains How to Beat series lately. I really enjoy his stuff, and I'm not quite sure why lol. Mostly do horror movies, so don't know if I should share them here.
Mad Doc Grotsnik wrote: Clone Wars is a bit odd, as the seasons as released contained stories out of strict chronological order.
Stick with it though, as it gets really, really good.
Eh. I disagree.
Now having chewed through all the seasons? I find about 1/3 tedious & repetitive, 1/3 average/ok, & 1/3 good.
Most annoying is how animated Anikan & movie Anikan simply aren't the same character.
My wife and I have been watch On Patrol Live. It's been a guilty pleasure as one of the police departments they follow is about 20 minutes north of us and another department is about 30 miles south of us. It makes me sad when I see how dumb and high some of the people who live around me are.
I'm roughly two decades behind on TV, but thanks to our local video rental store, I'm finally watching The Walking Dead. I just finished the six-episode first season, and rather enjoyed it.
The Batman, animated series from (not too distant past).
I have it on while building stuff & painting Legion Imperialis.
I think I'm about halfway through s2?
Overall, other than the Joker, I like it's style.
I also like that it doesn't really have much - if any -overarching plot. So if I tune it out while painting some detail or such I haven't missed anything going into the next episode.
Watched this. Really enjoyed it, and it good to see my favorite Warhammer Fantasy Battle faction, the High Elves back in action. Although I do find the guys from Tabletop Tactics a bit OTT, like Spider makes them smoke meth before they begin every game, or something. Chef and Jinx are a bit less so, though. Really enjoyed it, go the Asur!
Just finished watching this. I really enjoy all of this guy's stuff, his series about the Supernatural included. It takes ages between uploads, but the wait is worth it, in my eyes.
Watched the new Liz Miele stand up special on YouTube. It started off slow with more buildup but ended with strong payoffs. She’s one of my favorite comedians working today.
I like Internet Historian but I hadn't heard of this channel until the almighty YT algorithm suggested their latest video on Life is Strange Colours or whatever the feth it's called. I enjoyed it a lot so I've watched a couple more including the one about Forespoken and it seemed the game was even worse than I thought. They are just too damned funny, lol.
Now, with replaying Vampire: The Masquerade; Bloodlines yet again and being a member of the Merchant's Guild (gotta help out a fellow Jew, after all), Checked out Sseth Tzeentach's video on VTMB again, love it, lol.
Home Game on Netflix is worth checking out - weird and wonderful local sports from around the world. Episode 1 in particular - some nutters in Florence who play Calcio Storico, which is quite literally Blood Bowl...
I can’t stop watching videos about the Drake and Kendrick Lamar rap battle. It’s so big and personal and weird that it’s getting coverage on channels totally unrelated to music. And now that someone shot Drake’s security guard in a drive-by, it’s going to blow up in the mainstream.
Kendrick Lamar’s last two tracks put Drake’s career in the Celebrity RIP thread. Which is a win for us all.
All the people who trolled J Cole for stepping out of the beef early are now praising his wisdom.

I have zero interest in rap/hip-hop, but a good beef is always intriguing. I didn't listen to a single "song" from either party during this uproar, but have probably watched like 3+ hours of "react" videos and analysis/commentary from those who are in that industry or rap/hip-hop enthusiasts. Most folks seem to have predicted KL would win from the onset, and it appears so. Drake always seemed like an industry manufactured product to me.
With that said, if you put a gun to my head and told me to name one song from any of these dudes or I'd be executed, I'd just reach up with my finger and pull the trigger for you.
I’ve always found these diss track things kind of childish and of zero interest to me.
But, I just watched a WikiWeekends video which went into some depth.
Given suspicions around Drake and his regular befriending of young actors and artists? You do have to wonder. It is possible he’s just been avuncular with them, offering a supportive adult role, having apparently been a child star himself.
But we don’t live in a world where we really see that sort of thing happening.
Out with the Rap Beef and in with Archeology Beef!
Watched the Flint Dibble/Graham Hancock debate on Joe Rogan’s podcast about lost civilizations. Flint Dibble is a legit archeologist and really went to town displaying evidence/data refuting Grahams lost Ice Age civilization hypothesis.
It was the first that I’ve seen of Graham Hancock being put on the spot like that and I think he got exposed, badly. He had some points about some areas needing more archeological scrutiny, but he flat out admitted there was no evidence of a lost civilization. And seeing other archeologists/historians pre-record video’s saying what Graham gets wrong on certain subjects must’ve been hard for him to take. It got pretty contentious at times, very passive aggressive, but was relatively professional. Rogan was a decent moderator. I’d assumed he’d be more partial to Graham because of their prior relationship, but he asked some questions that you could tell Graham was uneasy with.
I like Grahams stuff in the same way I like UFO’s and Bigfoot/Loch Ness stuff. Its fun to imagine and hypothesize, but once direct evidence is required, it falls apart.
Subscribed to Flint’s archeology Youtube page as a result.
I've just finished watching the finale of Loading Ready Run's Vampire the Masquerade campaign; it's been epic, engrossing and hilarious for me, so maybe other geeks will enjoy?! It is 3 seasons long, recorded over the past 4-years, so about 50-hours worth of content...
Seriously one of my favourite action sequences, around one of my all-time favourite anti-heroes, Dinobot, from one of my favourite episodes on television, Code of Hero.
Just rewatched the episode of Beast Wars I mentioned Code of Hero in an earlier post on DVD (I bought the box set years ago when I could barely afford it, which I'm glad about today) both the normal episode and the Commentary episode. It's always interesting to learn about how it works behind the scenes. What an excellent episode. One thing that amazes me is how expressive the animators made the characters be, despite limitations of technology at the time and how they're, you know, robots, lol. Mainframe were real pioneers of animation at the time, especially with Reboot.
One my favourite dialog exchanges of all time, lol.
Megatron: Grr, a bargaining chip should remain in play until the game is over. YESS.
Black Arachnia: Why do you always talk to yourself?
Megatron: Oh, I simply have a penchant for intelligent conversation.
Finished American Primeval last night. 6 episodes was perfect, didn't outstay its welcome and kept me engaged all the way through. Ending was somewhat predictable but not in a bad way at all. Solid performances, well written, nicely shot and a part of American history that I didn't really know about.
I'm not usually a fan of Westerns but this was nicely done. I wouldn't say it's a hard watch because it ticks along at a solid pace but certainly deserving of it's mature audience rating.
Just started (re)watching the one season scifi show from the early 2000s called Threshold. I've had a soft spot for it for years but could never find it streaming on any service that I was on (or any period as of this week other than for purchase digitally)... but I found a bootleg version up on youtube with some wonky audio and am binging the season.
I've been watching Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, a series that I never got to see more than a handful of episodes back in the early 2000's due to either my work schedule not lining up when it was airing or not being able to find it at all. Some of the episodes I've seen so far seem quite derivative of other shows and films (e.g., the Consensus of Parts in season one seemed like a cheap Borg knockoff while the second season episode "All Too Human" is heavily inspired by 'The Matrix'). Once I complete the series, I'll give either Farscape or Babylon 5 another watch.
It (Andromeda) was a fun watch for the first couple seasons that I used to lovingly call Space Hercules but it jumped the shark with a season switchover somewhere near the end (final season?) where they were stuck on a planet IIRC. I'd post details but they're massive spoilers. Same thing kind of happened unfortunately with Earth Final Conflict...
Andromeda is definitely an odd one. Its high points are really solid. And let’s face it, it did a far better job of “so, now you’re in the future and everything has turned out horrible, time to put it back together again” than Discovery did.
But man does it have some real troughs. I find Tyr quite dull as a character, and he’s never really developed beyond being a Gruff Turbo Nutter. And it’s not the actor at fault.
I like his voice...he kinda sounds like a Custodes who's good at playing Paradox-Billiards-Vostroyan-Roulette-Fourth-Dimensional-Hypercube-Chess-Strip Poker, hmm, lol.
BanjoJohn wrote: Been watching Seinfeld and "The Chosen" with the wife.
What an odd coupling... the show about nothing with a show about everything. Noice!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'll probably (finally) watch Macross Zero this week my friend let me know that all the previously forbidden Macross titles are now up on Disney/Hulu.
Been binging and sharing clips and quotes from this utter gem of a movie on Facebook. I love Kung Pow, makes me laugh so much.
Town administrator: "What is the evil council's plan?"
Master Betty: "HYEH! It is evil! NYEAH, it is so evil! It is a bad, bad plan. That will hurt many people....THAT ARE GOOD! I think it's GREAT cause it's so bad!"
[Betty has thrown a claw at Master Tang; the action freezes]
Master Tang: [voiceover] Okay, so here were my options. A, quickly duck sideways, dodge the claw, then take him out with a spinning back kick, or B, take the claw in the face, then roll on the ground and die.
[action resumes; Tang gets hit with the claw]
Master Tang: Hmm, should have gone with A.
Master Betty: I have been called bad before. Many have said I do things that are not correct to do. I don't believe in talk such as this. I am nice man, with happy feelings. All of the time. First, a joke. What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord?
[pause]
Master Betty: My ass. Nyah, haha, haha, haha, ENOUGH.
My family and I make a weekly trip to rent DVDs. There is a huge wall of American TV series, and we've mostly been watching police procedurals. We're currently working our way through Bones, Blacklist, and Blind Spot-- all several years old, but all brand new to me.
Finally finished off Andromeda. I'll give the series three and a half stars out of five with half a star just for Lexa Doig's outstanding role as Rommie I also enjoyed that you could hold a full-fledged sci-fi convention with all of the guest stars, from the X-Files, Highlander, Star Gate SG-1, Seven Days, Supernatural, The Outer Limits, etc. They even had the MCU's Cobie Smulder playing Telemachus Rade's wife in the series finale!
warboss wrote:It (Andromeda) was a fun watch for the first couple seasons that I used to lovingly call Space Hercules but it jumped the shark with a season switchover somewhere near the end (final season?) where they were stuck on a planet IIRC. I preferred the later seasons when they got away from the 'let's almost destroy the ship and shoot off a lot of pyrotechnics' story every week. And the special effects got better in later seasons (especially the slipstream effects).
The last season went from a syndicated show to a Sci-Fi Channel show, so that may have had something to do with the changes in the last season.

The main problem with Tyr was his inconsistency. At times one could swear that he was bipolar.
Do you mean the Godzilla cartoon where humanity fled Earth on a ship to avoid Godzilla and then returned later on to find bigger Godzilla? Unless it gets drastically better after episode 3 or so, it’s a waste of time.
BobtheInquisitor wrote: Do you mean the Godzilla cartoon where humanity fled Earth on a ship to avoid Godzilla and then returned later on to find bigger Godzilla? Unless it gets drastically better after episode 3 or so, it’s a waste of time.
I heard there was a Mechagodzilla City, that was my chief interest. But no es Bueno?
I'll skip it then. Any decent giant robot joy online? [No Amazon Prime here ]
It's been ages since Fredrik Knudsen has updated, but here is his newest I just watched. I always enjoy his videos. I only really know of Dwarf Fortress from Sseth Tzzentach's review of it years back (I am a fan of his channel too, so much so I'm a part of the Merchant's Guild, it's also fitting because I'm a little bit Jewish too, lol) Anyway, what an epic, tragic story.

I'm watching the second season of Pantheon ATM. I quite liked the first season tbh
Just finished watching. The second season felt every bit as decent as the first one. It's not a work of art by any means, but thought provoking and entertaining enough for my sensibilities. I also liked the drawing style as it reminded me of early 90s animations such as Captain Planet, Denver The Last Dinosaur et al. It's a style that has some semblance of anime, but also has its own thing going on
Rewatching Casino Royale for the hundredth time and the first time in years. I decided to watch it after working a lot on minis of Anargrin and Raleas the main from my Diesel Punk series The Angaran Chronicles which is heavily inspired by James Bond, most particularly the trailer for Skyfall. Up to the famous chase scene where he's after Sébastien Foucan's bomb maker. What an amazing action scene, one of my all-time favourites.
Started rewatching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia for the twentieth time. Just finished the 2nd episode of Season 2, which I think is an excellent episode, and its allegory remains relevant today. I like season 1 a lot, but after his almighty, Danny DeVito, joins the cast, the show definitely gets even better.
School Spirits: Pretty good show
Apothecary Diaries: Probably top 5 anime for me
I have been killing slimes for 300 years and maxed out my level: Total comfort show for me, stupidely fun though.
Still rewatching Always Sunny in Philadelphia, up to season 4, episode 9, Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life. Not the best episode in the show, but still enjoyable. Dennis' prose in his "memoir" is so bad it gives me as a writer a chuckle and the cameos of Sinbad and Rob Thomas are out of left field, but awesome. It's crazy they're getting cameos of such celebrities so early in the peace.
Nearly completed a re-watch of Battlestar Galactica.
The final season definitely makes a lot more sense once you’ve seen it a couple of times. Also very fond of the Galactica displaying ever more damage and fatigue as the story unfolds.
Just finished rewatching one of my all-time favourite Always Sunny episodes, "The Nightman Cometh". I forgot it was made as early as season 4 and it really is a great episode. It has to be up there with "The Gang Buys a Boat" as my favourites mostly because of Dennis' "because of the implication" scene which I found out, due to the Always Sunny podcast (which is now sadly RIP), was written by Charlie Day. He is my favourite of the main trio, but Dennis is my favourite character overall, which is funny because Charlie Day said his favourite character to write was indeed, Dennis Reynolds.

This made me laugh so hard, now my chest hurts. Especially the egg in tryin' times' bit.
Just finished watching this. Internet Historian as funny as ever (Can't beat his Area 51 video, though the prolonged animated scene when the weebs are storming it made me laugh so hard it hurt my mouth and chest). He uploaded yesterday, but I missed it. I hope he can get to doing more Expleined videos now.
And I will check that Hoplite video out. I remember going down a rabbit hole years ago and coming away with the notion that nobody really knows how the Hoplites fought exactly. Hopefully there’s some definitive answer in those videos.
Well, just like no one will ever know how a Roman Triplex Acies formation, or a Manipular Cohort actually worked. Polybius carefully explains it, and it still isn't clear at all!
I rewatched one of my favourite YouTuber's new songs a while back, then looked through his channel, but found all his old funny as frig video game videos were gone. I whined about it on the music video but he replied that he'd moved them to a different channel goblinman5000 (which I'm sure is a reference to Powerman 5000). So been watching those videos. Like this one right now, I think he's so damned funny and completely undersubbed, but that's just my opinion, man.
Last night, I re-watched Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Complete as I've been meaning to watch it due to realising how influential the original was on me as a writer (mostly for writing action scenes), although it was getting too late and I stopped to go to sleep.
Complete is 100x better than the original, much easier to understand what the hell is going on. I watched it with my mum last time and even she could follow it.
Finished watching FF7: Advent Children, Complete today, and it really is a ton pf fun as a movie. I'm happy that Reno and Rude play such a big part in the movie, that was the best decision they made making it. The faces of the characters do have a little bit of an uncanny valley vibe when they talk sometimes.
Not watching right now, but Fredrik Knudsen finally released a new video. He's like the Internet Historian but covers more niche subjects (seriously, this is super niche) and takes it far more seriously).
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm actually watching this right now. He's a damned good YouTuber, I became a Patron a while back.
Feral Historian is good, but sometimes leans a bit too (small c) conservative and Libertarian for his own good; but he still has interesting takes on things.
Plus, as a fellow mountain living person, his videos in the wild are fun.

Yeeeaah, I don't always agree with his takes too.
Last night, I watched the latest episode of Dan Da Dan and man, it had to be one the best so far. The level of imagination on display boggles my brain. What a great show.
Last night, due to a convoluted series of events, I watched the original Naked Gun trilogy. I wanted to watch Tropic Thunder due to seeing a video about it on YT, but I had to buy it. The I remembered I have a DVD of Airplane! But it wasn't compatible with my Blu-ray player for some reason (I bought it from a dump shop so it could've been scratched to hell high and back, but I checked the disc and it seemed fine, so okay) so I found Naked Gun on Netflix and decided it was the next best thing. Enjoyed all three, especially the meme'd gunfight at the end of the 2nd one. It was weird seeing OJ Simpson in it knowing what he'd done...I mean ALLEGEDLY done years later. He was actually a pretty good actor and seeing him get so beaten up was all the more funny in hindsight, lol.
JAWS is back in the theaters for its 50th anniversary.
Excellent movie.
So, took me 50 years, but.... i can now say that I've finally seen Jaws beginning to end in one sitting.
Excellent movie, well worth the tkt price.
(For the record, I HAVE seen Jaws before. Just as clips, segments, etc over the years on TV, Cable, VHS as a teen, YT...) just not all at once until this evening. )
A few youtube channels run by former Special Forces guys (Anti-Hero Podcast, Valhalla VFT amongst others) have been going to town on Tim Kennedy and John Mcphee (both former Special Forces guys) and their outlandish claims made in books and podcast shows.
Been very interesting watching that community of high level warfighters finally speak out and push back on the grifters. Some of the claims were so obviously bullcrap that its almost cathartic to see them get called on it.
My oldest brother had some dealings with a few folks mentioned in some of the stories of the early days of GWOT, so it hit pretty close to home.
Finally finished Cobra Kai. Outside of a single dream sequence that I hated this might be one of the best start to finish series I've ever watched. Like any reasonably long show it's got a few lulls in the quality but overall it was pretty fantastic and they nailed the landing.
I'm rewatching Team America: World Police for the first time in years. Loving it, made me laugh out loud so often and can't help sing out loud to the songs. Great movie, lol.
Family is away for a bit so running through the Extraction films again. Brutal, but amazing thrill rides. Just the right amount of down time to get a bit of character building done before jumping straight back into the murderising.
Hulksmash wrote: Finally finished Cobra Kai. Outside of a single dream sequence that I hated this might be one of the best start to finish series I've ever watched. Like any reasonably long show it's got a few lulls in the quality but overall it was pretty fantastic and they nailed the landing.
For a series that started out as a bit of (good!) Internet silliness, it far surpassed itself.
We get a lot of the original cast returning, but none of it feels like ‘member berries, or nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia.
I like Johnny being Mr Peaked In High School, without being beyond redemption. This works quite well because we know he came from a crappy background and bad influences in his formative years. To see him catch a break and build back his life is just enjoyable watching, all the more so because it’s not a smooth, straight road for him.
Saw Adam Ray at Magooby's Joke House last night and spent this morning with his most recent special on as background noise while I did my morning routine.
Fun night, and made me want to get out to more comedy shows.
Been watching this from the vastly undersubbed goblinman5000. One of my favourite YouTubers! He also promoted my novel, The Angaran Chronicles: The Underside in it! Isn't that so cool? Please give him a watch a like and a sub to help him out! Very funny.
Was thinking to make a this a thread unto itself, but figured I’d try it here.
Is YouTube an underrated platform?
Sure, any big shows you need to pay for, or be quick off the mark before their piracy stuff slaps a channel down.
But outside of that? It’s a home for specific interests. All sorts of nonsense of course, but also some easily found, competent documentaries. And if Might Algorithmo is behaving it’s ineffable self, it’s like MTV before MTV forgot the M stood for Music and not Moron, as you can just stick on a bunch of music videos.
Could be the old classics, could be spelunking in a specific peculiar obscure sub-genre. Could be entirely pop pap. Doesn’t matter. It’s on there.
I use it so much, I’ve got the Premium to cut out the ads.
Of all the sort of social media stuff? I feel likes it suffered the least from engakification. At least it’s entirely free to watch if you can cope with the ads?
@Mad Doc, I love YouTube, totally addicted, and I too have begun a Premium Membership, mostly at the insistence of my father, and man, having no ads makes it much, much better. Also, the other features are good, too. But, of course, the 2nd month after I make the membership, YouTube puts up the price by a whole $10.00, mwah mwah.
Despite this, I would say YouTube isn't what it used to be. Because so many creators are using it as a source of income rather than a hobby, and advertising being the biggest monetary gains for creators really does encourage self censorship for fear of demonitisation, getting your video hidden, etc. This does encourage a lot of sanitisation that didn't happen ten-fifteen years ago. Things like Patreon, or even YouTube's own member system does alleviate that, but Patreon has been known to kick people off who have pretty tepid takes. It's one of the reasons I love FlashGitz and their secondary channel, TomandDom. They're old school guys who seem to be thriving despite being edgy as feth, thanks to their Patrons. I've thought about backing them on Patreon, actually. I hope GW won't go after them for their Space King series as while it isn't "40k" it really kinda is, lol.
Going to your question, is YouTube underrated? Yes and no. It's still great especially if one is unfamiliar about how much freedom the site used to have. It really was a place that was able to provide a (to use that Libertarian line) Market Place of Ideas. I remember back when it was the Atheists vs Christian Apologists and that was a fun time. It still happens, but it isn't as animated. Or at least I think so, I've kinda moved on from watching that content anymore. It's all the same arguments over and over on both sides.
But despite this, I still think it's a great site.
I’m a dirty science trusting Leftie, and I find with a little tactical pruning using the “do not recommend channel” option has cultivated some solid sources.
I follow a lot of debunkers, from the strongly scientific such as Professor Dave, to the knowingly silly but still making accurate points and arguments, like Sir Sic.
I’m not personally into the DeBaTe Me BrO stuff, so I’ve trained the algorithm accordingly. But they are still there. Some are completely unhinged. Some are mind numbingly long (I don’t want to watch a three video of people talking over one another for instance). And yeah a bunch are just really poorly moderated.
I did however greatly enjoy Professor Dave’s turns with Lord Jamar (utter moron), Mr Kent Hovind (moron lying for Jesus) James Tour (lying for Jesus) and Suboor Ahmed (moron lying for Allah). Those were pretty spicy, as Professor Dave doesn’t mince words. But crucially all three well reasonably well moderated.
But there are debunkers I find unbearably smug with it, and so I avoid their channels where possible.
So there is still a lot of decent debate material on there. I don’t know where your taste lie, but I do actively recommend Professor Dave. Even if you don’t agree with him? His stuff is compelling, from exposing the Discovery Institute to humiliating some anti-vaccine grifters most recently, a big part of his approach is to first demonstrate his opponent might refer to the odd scientific paper, but either hasn’t actually read them. Or is wilfully misrepresenting and misinterpreting.
Others I’d recommend, though they do reaction commentary? Viced Rhino and Paulogia. Both are former Christians, addressing Christian Apologetics. Both offer quite sober takes on the matter, and have solid knowledge of the Bible, and so make very interesting points.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, YouTube seems to be demonetising AI Slop channels. So that’s something.
Thanks for the recommendations, I might check them out. I'm most definitely on the side of the non-religious and would describe my politics as centre-left. I like to tip my fedora, lol. Nah, I do have a fedora, but I never wear it anymore after it was ruined by Redditors. I've heard the debunking of the Watchmaker argument so often that it seems almost impossible to do it in a refreshing way.
Back on topic, I watched this a while ago, and I really couldn't agree more...
I watched the first three Scary Movie...movies last night. 1 was okay, quite funny here and there. Two was just bad and even boring, to be honest. I didn't like it even as a teenager years back. But three, three was the best in my opinion. Made me laugh a lot, I think it helped a lot that it was directed by the same dude who did Airplane! and the Naked Gun trilogy. This scene that I'm watching right now is one of my favourites, made me laugh out loud. I showed it to my dad and he loved it too.
I've finally gotten around to watching Succession. Or trying to....
I've generally heard nothing but good things & praise for this series. But after slogging through season 1? I'm done. I don't like any of the characters & I simply don't care what they're doing.
Haven’t touched the series since about 2 episodes into season 3, so I’ve only been watching clips on youtube, but Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart in Witcher Season 4 is must-see TV. Dude dominates every scene he is in as an absolutely ruthless bounty hunter and I can’t get enough.
