Welcome all to the 135th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is: Hunter and the Hunted: Rangers, inquisitors, assassins, snipers, and other combatants who search for the enemy and destroy them. Also woodland creatures, grots or othering things targeted for the hunt. Or cross the streams and paint up a fox assassin. Lots of woodland adventure minis out there. Things that stalk the night and their prey.
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight EST on May 31st After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Hawkeye was one of the first Crisis Protocol models I assembled but I never got around to painting him. I should do something about that.

Hunters, eh?
Yup, oldhammer Jes Goodwin Harlequins ... along with a bit of restored tech from the vaults:
So a partial deldar raider that's going to become a Harley party bus; being old flat metals you can fit on a surprisingly number of them. I've sculpted up the face, but if I am unhappy with it, I have an stl to try also. And as for the colour scheme... joke's on you

Well since these are on the painting table to finish priming, it would seem obvious who the hunters need to be. A few random unfortunates from the unpainted mountain and we have the hunted.

New here myself but I would say adding pics to the gallery was pretty easy. Go to Gallery, My Gallery and add pics. Then include the img. I had to lower my resolution before uploading to keep the picture reasonably sized. Probably a better way to limit it but I have not learned that yet.

Welcome aboard.
The general way things go is we vote for next month’s topic a little over a week before it starts (barring a few fixed months where I will remind everyone March is “space marine” October is a Halloween special, December is an open round, and February is a finish it special round). Normally the 2nd place topic from the month before gets a second chance, along with 3 new topics. Ideas are always welcome, and I generally fish for them halfway through the month. Unused topics get put on a list for future consideration.
We then get a month to paint from start to finish. Poll goes up, vote lasts 5 days, winner announced.
Lather rinse repeat.
We will occasionally break out own rules, but I will let you know. Occasionally for “horde” topics we lift the 5 model limit. For Feb we lift the “must start blank” rule to let people polish off old works.
Images can be hosted on Dakka (which we prefer) but you can link them from anywhere. One reason we prefer them hosted here is that we know they will work, and won’t be paywalled, have hotlinked issues, axed by the host, or be banned in certain countries. But that’s just a preference, not a rule.
At some point I should probably write up the full hyper-specific rules, with examples and all the fine print. But I don’t want to bog down the normal boilerplate I post at the start of every month in legalease.

Hey Nev,
I know it's breaking the rules a little, so I won't be insulted to be told no, but I wanted to check if I could enter this guy. I've painted some silver on him already, so he's not not unpainted for the before picture. I'm just wondering if it's close enough. I think he fits the hunter theme pretty well, and I'm having trouble thinking of what else I have that I would feel like painting for this month's theme.

Welcome!
Dakka gallery is useful tool.
You can make a category to group the images to keep things organized. On the right side, in the My Gallery, you will see your created categories, you can edit them too.
When in the image settings, you can select what size you want the images displayed at (recommended, thumb, small, medium, full) and then copy the link to paste it on the forum.
For image sizes, if you are using windows 10/11 operation system, the opened image has (edit) button on top, and you can quickly crop or edit contrast. But also when you select image options, there is a (Resize) option that will allow you to adjust image size and resolution without image editing software.
Otherwise you can use a free Browser "photoshop" tool called Photopea to quickly edit images from a browser without any software. https://www.photopea.com/
Glad to have you on board, take time to get to know dakka, gallery tools are your friends!

I'm probably biting off more than I can chew, especially since we're already a week into the month of May, but I'll try and paint my Necrosphinx since I was able to get it primed. Proof:
Necrosphinxes hunt their quarry to send it to the afterlife, and their rules in game reflect this, so I figure it fits the theme adequately. There's a ton of detail on this monstrosity, so I hope I can get it done in time.

There are so many cool proofs already, I can't wait to see everything all painted up!
Also, for folks new to using the site/gallery, when copy/pasting links from the gallery into this thread, it's usually best to use the "medium (up to 600px)" size or else it blows up the formatting of the whole thread page for small screens (like phones).

Yeah, picture taking is an entire section of hobby, especially with limited space.
I built this light box, and decided to post up update https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/790851.page It is OK, but it is small, and I do not have good lights. I did invest into a good camera, but I lack the knowledge and experience with it, and lack funds for a better lens. and my phone camera is even worse, I feel you man. Most of the time I do not know what I am doing with the camera.

Daia T'Nara - Chaos Dreadnought
Not my cleanest work - because I'm on the bit of the spectrum that thinks optimisation is cool for its own sake this was also my entry for the vehicles/monsters portion of my local group's Ready Ranks challenge, which meant I only had this week and last to paint instead of the whole month, and I didn't want to go to the effort of a full strip down so I just painted over the original paint job and slightly wonky assembly (including what I'm guessing is a scratchbuilt grenade launcher on top? It's fine, I like that the mini has history). It's fine, I picked this up in a batch of four so if I ever want to do a maximum-effort chaos dreadnought I still can with one of the others.

Yeah feeling that myself, just finished the base coat finally last night - not even cleaned up where I spilled outside of the lines yet. Is what happens when you change your color scheme plan 3 times and decide to throw in several other models to paint alongside it and then for some reason decide each of them will only have 1 or 2 colors connecting them to the others. I feel I spent more time deciding what color clothes I wanted a model to wear than I have ever done with myself.

Yeah. Is painted and looks good sounds like mission accomplished to me.
Me, I'm taking my time this month. Clint doesn't wear a complicated outfit, which makes it viable to paint at a leisurely pace this month and, ahem, get thoroughly distracted by a video game or two. Might have picked up the pace a bit though, had I known it was going to get unduly warm in late May.
Still, no need to rush anything. There are only a few small bits missing washes and highlights.

Hey look who finished on time (if you count fact that they aren't varnished yet...)!
So first of all, I noted was going to throw some stuff I hadn't painted from April in on top of the hunter I originally posted up, but never reposted that pic so here is that proof (though its the same photo from last month):
Now for the final photos. The Hunter is obvious, the Giant is basically an apex predator so that is obvious, and the guy with three guns is because I wanted to paint up my Bruiser finally for my Ogres, but I guess you can stretch 'has a gun' to 'hunter'.
They are still on their paint stands since they are not fully varnished yet and I didn't want to handle them before doing that, though I suppose 1 coat has been done since I took them. Also man I had so much trouble with autofocus on these, as the pictures can probably show. Not going to pretend they are high art, but I am very happy with how they turned out.

Noted.
We will add at least a one day extension due to technical difficulties. I’ll keep an eye on the thread in the N&B section. If it take long to sort out we’ll go for 24 hours after it’s resolved.
If you are done and are having problems, post here to let us know, and I’ll hold off closing the month until everyone who has said something gets pics in.

The gallery is still broken, so I'm hosting this on one of my webcomics.
Kid Cthulhu-Astropath Fennix
(when it's fixed, I'll drop it in the gallery)

I like the skin tone on that astropath, KidCthulhu. Very pale and unhealthy!

It appears to be a server-wide issue right now. I do know it is being worked on, though.
On another note, I made the mistake of waiting for new paint to arrive to start painting and then going on a trip for a week, and I haven't even finished base coating, so alas, I must drop out of this month's competition

Thanks! It's the classic Rakarth Flesh base, Reikland Flesh Wash, and Pallid Wych Flesh drybrush.

Got a proof.

And will keep tabs to properly upload when the all clear is given.
