Longer indeed, but fun, I try to enjoy the process.
For Hydra Gauntlets I was even considering converting gauntlets into small crab claw pieces I gathered from the beach while back, but want to save them for Nid conversions.
As long as gauntlets look like creature's carapace it works.

Cocktail stirrers are great, if you have a desk grinder with fine wheel to shape broken off pieces, because that plastic chips and does not cut.
No variations in size however.

I think (white base/color wash) is what really pops the colors.
I do same thing in oil painting, a thin glaze over white will result in a color that will always be much brighter than same exact color but painted opaquely.
