Its only done "poorly" compared to your other outstanding work. A lot of others (myself included) would be quite happy to pull that off consistently

I can say this - your picture of the Wraithknight is now making me consider getting one!

The 'stock' model is hurt by a bland pose and by the choice to have Saim-Hann be the poster boys for Eldar this time around...

Yeah, the basic pose that you get from using the ''guidance pins'' sucks large lollipop. Cut off everyone you can see and then get posing!

Don't be to hot with the glue but take some time to figure the pose out.

Quite so. I love that you can just get those pins out.

Beautiful. May I ask how you did the mottling?

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2013/06/05 17:56:44

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

careful dotting with a brush. Each new layer is blended slightly lighter (i used the base blue + 4 'layers') and I just make a random but evenly distributed pattern with each layer.

The colour needs to be very thin though, almost to the point where it nolonger spreads but surrenders to surface tension and starts to behave like water.

Pretty tank! And that mottling tip is great.

As for cutting down the torso, since STC says it's a bad idea, I'd suggest adding to the waist instead. Done right it should balance out the pigeon breast look.

Love your work, if only everyone "true" scaled their marines. Then games would look amazing. I shy away.from attempting this because think it would make my opponent's tiny marines look silly.

Guessing from your sig and dakka rank you run chaos marines. In that case why on earth would you NOT want to make your opponents SM look silly

I would be much more impressed by GW SM if they were more scaled like these "true" scale ones

Wow. I didn't realise it was that damn tall. It's a titan with normal 40k rules. Biased I tell you, biased! Chaos don't have their own giant monster to fight it with.

I agree with Dreadclaw thata freehand is "poorly" done to your standards, but I wouldn't mind having something of that quality on my models.

Wow, having not been about for almost a year I have had a lot to catch up on.
Your stuff is really inspiring I have to say, I love love your creativity.

Your tutorials are great.

I know it was ages back, but the Helldrake, did you consider going for an A10 Warthog type design with slightly swept back wings? It was the nose mounted minigun which drew me to that idea.

Also where did the lpha Legion pic come from, that you showed back in May?
While its a nice piece of art, I would definitely stick to the classic design as you have done.

I look forward to seeing more from youi

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice with the wraithknight. I seriously considered some other options but they weren't as impressive so I said, "no guts, no glory" and went ahead with it. However I do understand no what you said about the interconnected plates that make up the torso.

Wow.

I really have been to preoccupied with work and beer as of late, no posting at all.

Bad me! *smacks fingers with a ruler* OW!

jesusfrrakkin'christthathurtmutherf..

*ahem*

But there are true madness ahead I tell you! Much to enjoy. A squad of guardsmen are awaiting the paintbrush, a few more of the XX Legiones Astartes are close to being finished up and awaiting free-hand details eagerly awaiting the Istvaan V job.

We will soon re-start the ravenguard project set to the 41st millenium but with a slight twist, a testmodel has been built and is awaiting a lick of paint, if satisfactory results are achieved then we are going ahead with up-scaleing the whole shebang, after all.. there is a few months left until easter and the arrival of a proper list for the Legion. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves and start to assemble things without proper thought no?

So we will amuse ourselves elsewhere for the time being. I think there will be more progression on the scratchbuilding side of things too, I have a few ideas that i think will yield great results.

I will soon be back with some lovely pictures for you all.

(promises, promises )

Oh my STC! I retract all previous grumbling comments, this is simply beautiful! and the perfect inspiration! Really really excellently done, are you working with just black and white for that effect? Thanks guys, glad you like it.

J-P: It's black and grey colours, makes it easier to adjust the dosage because black/white mixes are notoriously sensitive. I can see if i can whip up a small tutorial for you, it's not that tecnically difficult, but it does require a somewhat steady hand and an eye for how light falls.

If you could STC that would be fantastic, would really help, Do you reckon it would work well with weathering techniques or would it ruin the simulated light effect? If you wouldn't mind STC I would also love to know what paints you used for that silver, the skull on the backpack in particular looks incredibly deep!

We do aim to please.

JP; I guess it would work with careful weathering (modest edge-scratching, light dust/dirt effects on the boots and geaves, bloodsplatter etc.) one must keep in mind that a surface usually dulls due to even distribution of particles before the dirt really shows.

I usually paint my metal with a 20/80 base of boltgun and chaos black, then run it through 2 stages (roughly 40/60 and 70/30) and then pure boltgun. then 50/50 boltgun/chainmail, pure chainmail and then spot/glints with mithril.
the brightness regulated by the extent of the highlighting-stages.

By the way, Love the now tactical squad plastics, very sharp and awsome. Not all that impressed by the Vanguard/Sternguard though. The detail is more ''soft edged'' and blocky, and some of the designs (mostly shoulderpads) just sucks, bad design through and through.

So yes.. I am building a first tactical and commandsquad. pics soon avalible.

Sooo... right. *Brushes some accumulated dust off the blog*

With the holidays fast approaching I thouht it might be time for another update.. I have been painting a bit of late after all.

Now, you might remember my little experiment with a homegrown chapter, it took off quite nicely. Building ''upscaled'' marines takes a while though but now I have a whole squad ready for the brush.

Enjoy.

+ Exloading datapacket..
+ Inquisitorial accesscode verified...

Unknown Battle-brother, 1st Tactical Squad, 2nd Company, Serpent Legion Adeptus Astartes Chapter [All Reference/ Crossreference Data Redacted]
Note numerous honours [Ref. Marksman's Honour (5+ visable), Order of the Iron Halo..]

Unknown Dreadnought, Omega icons and white ''helmet'' and power talon indicate first company veteran, chassi-identification number ''10''.
Mark IV ''Castaferrum'' Pattern Dreadnought-System.

The Lighting was a bit too sharp so the dreadnought's paintjob came out a bit more flat than it is in reality, a quick touch-up of the base and it's all done.
I also have some PIP pics of the sergeant for the squad, about halfway there.

Mmmm.. I am kind of pleased with these and they are a lot of fun to paint.
What do you guys think? Have a go at it!

I'll arrange some compairison-shots for size after the holidays are done, I'm visiting parents and things so I am about 250km away from home.

The blue acctually has a slightly greenish tint wich didn't carry on to the photos very well, it became more of a pure teal shade.. anyway. I'll get my hands on some masking tape and then it's time to paint some vehicles.

The little details make it stand out from the standard bolter and look totally bad-ass!

The added butt-stock on is awesome. Did that come off of a plasma gun or somewhere else?

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2013/12/23 18:34:54

The boltgun is a Tigrus pattern boltgun from forgeworld with a scope from the tactical marines kit, the stock is from a plasmagun and a thin pice of plastic rod.

11!

They are Bwo Ha Ha!-Marines.

... and none of the above.

There is no scale of alignment. Loyalty , as a concept, lies within the eye of the beholder and the intentions of the acting party.

And loyal to who? The Adeptus Terra? The Senatorium Imperialis? To the concept and principles of the Imperium? To the Emperor? To mankind as a species? ... perhaps all.. or none.

"-Sometimes, the only victory possible is to deny the victory of your enemy." - the Emperor, circa M31.

For something simple like that i can strongly recommend insta-mould, easy to work with and doesnt require any expensive set up, can either use green stuff or liquid resin, both are surprisingly easy to get acceptable results with!

If you brush some oil onto your original sculpt and then press some GS over it you can take the GS off once it's dried w/out the original sculpt moulding to it. You can then use the GS as a mould for the future, brushing it w oil each time you use it so that the mould comes away.
Not sure that was very clear but hoped it helps...

It's all brushwork by hand Alpharius, I don't own an airbrush. (though I sure and frak could use one).

You just have to have an even hand and water your paints, thin layers is the key.

That's what I like to hear - that this is all attainable by brush, if you have the talent, skill and patience.

Seriously though, water the paint up to where it's close to loose coherency due to surface tension and don't use a too large brush. Also, keep a fair amount of paint in the brush and spread it out as you go, this together with a high water content will ensure a smooth surface as it dries.

I use a citadel large brush with the tip cut of (about 5mm) to give it a straight brush head. It's not too large an unwieldly to splatter the paint all over but still large enough to hold enough paint and cover enough surface so it doesn't take all week to paint a tank.

Well, I am still away traveling until thursday but it gives me some time for planning some kind of armylist for the Serpent Legion, so far so good.

Chapter traits is a damn mess though, the stuff you want usually only apply to either stuff you don't want in your army or only non-bulky infantry. Also, can I haz a captain that offers useful army support (like officers should!) and maybe has a useful gun instead of someone who is firmly planted into the carnifex-tipping market? No? Well frak me..

Now, I would skip a captain and dual-wield librarians for yummy Telepathy-support if it wasn't for that one.. small detail: It feels... wrong.

And I like command squads for one reason; all members may purchase from the sweet, sweet, Special Weapons category. Effectively turning them into a veteran equivalent of the Legion armylists' Tactical Support Squad.

Mmmmm Guns! None of that close-combat sillyness here.

Anyway.. chaptertraits.

The Codex ones are just plain unhelpful, sure they are good for a lot of specialised variants but if you want to play with an armored spearhead list dedicated to close-range firefights with the infantry being tactical squads you are kind of out of luck.

Forge World are more interesting with the update for the Badab War chapters. Carcharodons are really nice with army-wide Fear USR and the allowance to add a ccw at +1pts to all tactical squads for the dreamy loadout of boltgun-boltpistol-huge frakkin' knife. Also with the added quirk of getting Rage after destroying/ forcing a fallback to an enemy unit in CC and then having to consolidate towards the closest enemy. The stumbling block here is that all allies are desperate allies, and that really messes up the concept with having some IG and an Inquisitor in the army.

Mantis warriors are also nice with their reroll to Seize, move through cover and hammer of wrath to infantry but it feels of more use to an infantry-dominated force.

I have some antipathy for the Iron Hands due to the inherent possibilities of vast cheese due to It Will Not Die to Characters, having it on vehicles feels ok but it seems that IH-chaptermasters on bikes with Shields Eternal are everywhere... Yuck!

Still, it looks like I am leaning towards using the IH-supplement list for two simple reasons of wargear.

1.) The Tempered helm : 24inch radius bubble for using wearers Ld fore Morale-tests, nice, and nominate a unit within 12'' each shooting phase that gets to reroll 1s' to hit. Wait.. Wait.. Captain with support-uses? Yay!

2.) Betrayer's Bane : Mastercrafted Combi-Melta... with unlimited use of the melta. So.. does this mean? I can make shooty-captain? I would have prefered a plasma gun or something wierd with a bit of range but hey. Gun!

I recon Iron Hand's is your best bet despite the potential factor. Just steer clear of the bike masters if that's what you don't want. Their Chapter Relics are a plus too

Well, why not Ultramarines, if you're not *that* attached to the fluff of your chapter ?

Their 1-turn boostS all fulfill what you need, even if you don't field Assault or Dev squads (sure, they're better if you do, but still have uses).

Or, the Imperial Fists ? Bolter drill seems like the thing you want, and Tank Hunter on Devs is pretty nice

As for the FW ones, I'm pretty sure there are some more useful and in line with what you're looking for than the Carcharodons... Who fears "Fear" in a game where most armies are Fearless / ATSKNF ? lol

Thanks guys! Glad you like them.

The 'crons are there because.. well.. I had some crons avalible to scrap. I went with daemonettes for the eldar army and I didn't want to repeat myself.

Yggs: True-scaling is dead easy as long as you don't complicate things. I only elongate the thighs and sternum on my models as you can see, elongating the shins is too time-consuming and, if we are to be honest, completely unnessecary.
Why? Well, it's a question of anatomy. In general, the lenght of the femural bone (the one in your thigh) that runs from the middle of your knee-joint to the top of your hip is slightly longer or equally distant to the combined lenght of your shin and foot. So adding a spacer to the geaves aswell as the thigh would make the shins too long and it would, well, look a bit off.

The biggest thing however, is posing the model. With marines everything above-belt so to speak is wonderfully dynamic (as long as you have a well-stocked bitzbox) and model-wise it is usually the legs that decide the pose.

The model has to 'line up'. The alignment of the feet is crucial to the pose since they usually corresponds to the implied direction. Think of the hands, are they where they should be? Is the head aligned and tilted properly?

Use photo references, think of the pose as a snap-shot of a movement, does it make sense? Achieving a credible pose is hard, but the results thend to be worth it.

The custom boltguns are made from the SM scout sniper rifles with the barrel shortened, a standard boltgun mag and the stock from a plasmagun added. the big one is the same but with a stormbolter mag and a lasgun stock.
The rifle on the ''sharpshooter'' is sourced from the sniper rifle from the IG command squad, the front grip and mag from a boltgun, the flashsupressor from a scout sniper rifle and a lasgun stock.

Some progress made, interior deck and grating is done and I have made a pile of benches, some has found their place on the interior wall of the side hull.
The front and rear will not maintain their vertical angles though, that's due to the construction being longer than the lenght of the sytrene sheet so I'll have to cut and add those areas separately.

We have also converted this guy from some spare parts to make sure that the benches are mounted on a proper height, after a job well done he and a few others will be lounging about inside as part of the crew. Making sure none of the
squads being transported ''borrows'' the crew's snacks, powertools or guns.

Well, no. It's an assault transport for my Teal Marines.

Not quite decided if I am going to use an existing unit for the rules or make a custom datasheet for it. It will be kind of large so I might have to.
As it looks now the basic hull of the troop-compartment will be almost 40cm long (15 3/4 inch) or twice that of a Landraider, and slightly wider than the widest point on a Rhino APC.

In short there's room enough to cram 4 dreadnoughts into it if you want to and there'd be a little room to spare.

Dreadnoughts need dedicated auuasult-transportation too!

But in short I'd thought I'd build something where the models acctually would fit into the transport-compartment. Now I know that all vehicles are scaled to 75% of the infantry scale so I shoulden't bitch about it (but how on earth do you fit 12 marines into a stormchicken? well, you dont.).

Aaaany way. I'll go chop some styrene sheet so i can update you with pics.

Yepp, then again, most SM's flying things look like a cargo-container with a couple of rocketboosters and a few slabs of metal welded on as wings. The drag on those things... sheesh.

Who needs aerodynamic design when you can just add more thrust!

For now I am oogling the Caestus Assault Ram for usable rules since they will be roughly the same size (this one a tad bigger) but I am not all that happy with the low transport capacity and the fact that it only has one weapon.
An extremely nasty weapon ( R18" S8 Ap1 Blast 5", Melta, Twl.) but still only one, the ability to ram stuff just as a tank while zooming is just hillarious though.

True, but it can't carry assaultmarines, and it has to enter Hover to be able to disembark the troops inside and that'll make it a gakking fire-magnet.
Still, AV 13 and 5++ in the front and side will keep it safe from a lot of AA, especially the S7 bracket.

I got to get my paws on the new IA:2 and see if they updated the rules from the ones in IA: Aeronautica, while the Ramming is fun, the rules gets a bit scetchy since it flies. Also, I should be able to Ram other fliers and non-vehicles.
Guess they could always update the Ramming to Vector Strike and be done with it.

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Cheers Guys!

@Theophony: I thought I'd model the interior to represent the vehicle "on the pad" so I don't have to model a full squad sitting strapped in. I'm going to model another one sitting on the seat opposite fiddling with his gear, perhaps one standing about in the rear mucking about with something. And why would he land sideways? Passengers will at least be equipped with power armour so a little incomming fire once the ramp drops won't be an issue. Ps. no like my ninjah?

@Commander Cain: It'll be a flying thingy. A bit unsure wich rules to use but it's probably going to be the Caestus Assault Ram or the Storm Eagle because of the size, feels like less than 4 HP (Storm Raven) is just silly on something that will end up almost twice the size of a Land Raider (not counting the wings and fins).

Also the concept-art for the Caestus is a major inspiration so I guess it's only fitting.

Concept Art

Sorry, I guess my feelings are lost in translation, and on the internet .

= I love ninjas, but that's what his opponent was going to say right before being beheaded.

As for landing sideways. Murphy's law= anything bad that could happen will happen. So every time this would be the ideal assault vehicle, the pilot would accidentally land sideways making the doors less than optimal.

I love your work. I will try to be more blunt next time instead of my usual silliness.

@whalemusic360: I do prefer the final product, these others looks more like ''Landers'' than ''Rams'' but for some reason I am slightly smitten with the one on the far right. It looks quite a lot like something you would land a Talon of Dreadnoughts with rather than regular pesky infantry.

@Theophony:

I am currently trying to get the nose together, getting the assaultramp juuuuust right is a small nightmare in of itself.

Mmm, more of an assaultboat / boarding shuttle for void-warfare. Think second-wave craft that goes in after the primary wave of Shark Boarding Torpedoes and Caestus Assault Rams have smashed a hole in the target and established a beach-head. Carrying high-value / bulky assets like dreadnoughts, self-propelled artillery (Raipier & Thunderfire platforms), Specialists like techmarine or Breacher Squads. That kind of thing.

Something like that I guess, I am however resigning myself to the fact that I am building a display-thingy.

Now that the nose and the ramp is glued on and I have started producing the tail (and rear ramp) the size of the damn thing is becomming clear. I maaay have made it a bit too big.

As it stands now it will turn out at a whooping 380mm (~15 inches) from nose to tail, not far off the T-Hawk's 480mm (~19 inches). So that means that it is just too big to be fielded as anything provided by the existing rules.

Alternatively I can just go all-out and add a secondary deck, add another 4-5 inches on the hull, go for a different wing-design than the one i had intended and fly it with the T-Hawk rules.

*sigh* it's going to be soooo much extra work!

Well, it's been a hectic few weeks but here are some pics of the Prometheus.

There's a few small touch-ups needed, mostle a snidge of errand paint here and there and I need to fix the headlights with some black and grey and the stormbolter needs some more attention but otherwise it's done.
Not winning any GD's but it's a gaming piece so table-top is good enough.

Pics!

Thanks guys, the colour comes out quite a bit flat, irl it's a deeper shade of azure, not sure what I am doing wrong..

I guess I just really need to get my act together and buy a lightbox.

Infantry is progressing well (I hate bulk-painting but it will never get done otherwise) and I am going for another tank to keep things mixed up.

Rhino/Razorback, Vindicator or Land Speeder Typhoon (wich strictly isn't a tank but still needs paint), wich one do you want to see first?

And no, not the Shadowsword, I'll get to it in time but not now.. not just now.

Aaaah! Black, I never thought it would be refreshing to paint black. All that teal on the raider wore me down.

I am re-basing the dreadnought now that I finally have decided wich kind of base to use for the Serpents, well, it was really about deciding how to paint my ROB-tiles so I could match my army to it, so once all the glue dries we'll have some pics on that.

Currently I am throwing paint at my Deathwatch kill-team and their tag-along inquisitor, not sure if I should finish the Storm Raven lurking in the closet or the Inquisitor's rhino for them to ride around in.

Desicions desicions...

No, I have not forgotten about this blog, I am just a bit preoccupied with my Inq28 stuff right now.

I managed to snag a copy of HH:3 and finally, FINALLY! I haz dem sweet sweet rules for the XX Legion.

So yes, the big box of resin crack that has been hiding for so long beneath the bed is starting to look mightily tempting.. Oh hell who am I kidding!? I have built (and upscaled), primed and based another 5 legionaires for the XXth and I have another 5 chopped up awaiting plasticard spacers. Soon there will be paint. (after easter)

If now only FW will crank out a decalsheet for the XXth Legion.

He looks really cool on the new terrain! You should definitely take pics of all your single models in it. As for the model himself, I think he looks really awesome so far. I've never been a huge fan of the deathwatch scheme since it removes a lot of the uniqueness from their origin chapter, but I love the addition of the battle-damaged Necron on the base!

The new guy looks awesome. I really love the deep indigo you have going for the pre-heresy scheme. It really looks nice. I definitely prefer this scheme to the one that Forge World used. The classic look, in my opinion, is superior.

The really great thing FW did is that this sheme is totally valid, the indigo being one of serval used by the sneaky bastards according to the fluff and colourpanels in HH:3. The azure metallic look being more common but by no means the only one used.

Thanks guys.

The fast pace comes from using a larger brush and fretting less about details. The basic armour is painted with a basecoat brush (first three layers on the basecoat) and only at the final two highlights (layer 4 & 5) I go down in size to a standard brush. Freehands and eyes are done with Army Painter's detail and insane detail brushes.

Concidering I have another 4 of these upscaled ones ready to paint.. weeell we'll try to have at least one more done by sunday.
I also have 2 more of my Azure Serpent legion marines halfway done, I'll try to finish those up tomorrow. And put the final highlight on my Deathwatch gravgunner... darn thing is two licks of paint from finished after all.

Well, that failed. Stupid beer, being all tasty..

I managed to finish these two at least, always something I guess.

One down, 6 more to go.

So, this is the sergeant for the upcomming command squad, the double meltapistols are not strictly legal but works as a stand-in for a meltagun. I have had great success with running commandsquads as dedicated firesupport elements with 5 special weapons so I thought this army needed one or perhaps two. Meltaguns for Vehicle/MC-hunting (or T4-multi wound units) or flamers for horde-control.
Sorry about the glare.

Honestly, it's simply sub-standard sculpting. The main body and necks of the hydra varies in thickness at the wrong places making it look odd, it's too contorted, they should have spread it out more over the pad and not squished it togheter like that and above all:

It's too damn thick! it rises way too high out of the shoulderplate, it's a bit hard to see on those photos but I saw a few pics taken at an angle from FW's open day and sheesh, I would eyeball it at about 3mm.

Also, no conformity of shape to the heads, the rear one looks like some derpy bird-head, it's just.. bad.

Something like that yeah.

On another note I have picked up my 1/10th finished dropship-scratchbuild and made some scetches to help me decide in wich direction to take the damn thing. I was going for a mono-boom assault-ram to begin with but the damn thing got ''a smidge'' too big to be able to use the caestus rules.

So.. well, the only way forward seems to be to take a shot at the thunderhawk rules and build the damn thing to size: additional flightdeck, rear exit ramp, extending the hull another 15-16cm and completely re-do the wingdesign with an adittion of forward canards and some kind of vertical stabilizer in the tail. Whoop-di-frakking-do!

I am however a bit uncertain wich layout to go forwards with, either go the classical route with a "T"-shaped stabilizer and straight wings with mid-mounted engines or do something different and go for design option 2 wich is a design more closely adhering to the layout of the Storm Eagle, engines in the wingroots with broader, triangular wings and double tail stabilizers at a 45-degree tilt.

I'll need to do some more scetches to figure this one out, what do you guys think?

I'm just hoping we get a badass etched brass sheet with an assortment of different Legion symbols like the Hydra, Omega, and classic A w/ chain. As for the dropship, I think something along the lines of the Storm Eagle would look cool, but I'd love to see some sketches of what you're thinking. It's hard for me to visualize your thought process.

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2014/05/14 21:32:29

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

I imagined something like this, roughly outlining the hull and placement of things, the wings will adhere roughly to the shape and angle of the ones on the stormeagle, sans gunpods and thrusters.
I was thinking I could avoid the huge gun and represent it with a heavy missilelauncher-system of some sort to avoid the 'hunchback' look of the thunderhawk.

Drawn to scale, 490mm long and 90mm high.

Ummm.. you are aware it's the intended future of this thing right? The red indicates the part that is built so far. (ie. forward part of the lower deck) Or did you mean why don't I just buy a thunderhawk?
This is the current progress.

This thing is already longer and wider than a storm eagle, the finished product will, with it's 49-50cm length be as large as a thunderhawk.
I already have a storm eagle kit, just hadn't had the time to come to grips with it yet, wonky pice of resin that it is.

Got a card up my sleeve; maybe I'll pull it out you'r ear.
Got' a rabbit in my hat; if you wanna' come and see.
This is what we'll be; this is what we'll be..

I got shackles on my wrist; soon I'll slip 'em and be gone.
Chain me in a box in the river; soon I'll be basking in the sun.
Trust none of what you hear; and less of what you see.
This is what we'll be; this is what we'll be..

I got a siny saw blade; all I need's a volunteer.
I'll cut you in half; while you're smilin'up at me.

Thanks gits!

@Thor dk: wow, tricky. I use 2.8mm sheet for the extenders (both thigh and midriff) so i guess, depending on posing of the model, the total extention of height is about 1cm.

Well, I have gotten something almost done again. I got in the mood and spent the afternoon converting an apothecary (because my I am going to need those), once done I thought "Paint!" and spent a few more hours doing the basics, a couple of tactical legionaires got swept up in the mayhem too.

So, these are PIP (no sh*t sherlock! ), armor is done, metallics have a basecoat and the bases are in various stages of nowere close to finished. Another hour or so per model should have them ready for a coat of matt varnish.

CnC are welcome as ever you lurking gits.

TBH I wasn't sure at first he was an Apothecary... Only when I saw the strange contraption on his left arm, did I wonder if he was... And then I read your first line

Could we see his reductor from another side ?

I'm also not really familiar with the 30k markings, and I guess that the AL tries to have its specialists unremarkable from the line legionnaires, so that kinda makes sense >:Z

Yggs: as far as I have seen the completely white livery of the 40k apothecary shines with it's absence in the HH books and models painted by FW for their dioramas. White helmets, shoulderpads, kneepads, usually in tandem with the red double-helix seems to be the order of the day as a spot colour. My take was to tone this down even further with a broad white stripe on the geave to add the red helix on with some freehand, to make it stand out. Though I have been dicking around with a design with twin red hydras spiraling around eachother to make the helix, and where they shift outside the white stripe they are painted in white instead of red.
I'll have to test-paint it though since it will most certainly be on the edge of my ability to freehand due to being so damn small.

And yes, you can haz moar pics.

So you have the chainblade for slicing up the warplate, the progenoid-removing-thingy on the 'inside' of that and on the vambrace you have a high-yield pulselaser to 'punch' a hole for the removal of progenoids instead of the standard drill, I went with that partly because I wanted something more high-tech and partly because I had no drill.

Pic-O-Rama!

Jeez, I will, you go and finish that daemonprince yggs!

On a side note I might be cancelling the tactical support squad with plasmaguns, I have been trying to clobber together a playable 2000pts list and while cool, the plasmasquad just eats too many points for little tactical gain concidering it rocks off at 330pts and will with all due probability win the trophy for most irresistable firemagnet ever. Still, it has a charm, 10 infiltrating marines that also are troops with PG's can be slightly silly.

I am for now pondering to replace them with a squad rocking Volkite Calivers, nifty rayguns with R30" S6 AP5 Heavy 2, Deflagrate (Target squad suffer additional hits at weapon S & AP equal to the number of unsaved wounds taken) and since the Tactical Support is troops you can infiltrate them on a strategicly placed objective (prefferably in cover) and let them stay there. also they are a tad cheaper at a mere 230pts.
Points of both squads calculated with addition of an auguery scanner, preventing infiltrators or scouts from deploying within 18" and giving the squad Interceptor vs. deep striking units within weapon range with Heavy and Rapid Fire weapons.
I think that hail of fire, with the added benefit of a 30"-radius interceptorbubble, (just imagine adding a master of signals for bs5! ) will add flexible firesupport capable of handling both hordes, high-toughness MC's (like castellax robots), and smaller elite units lacking a 2+ save. Terminators we'll kill with Boltguns, after all, infiltrating 20-man tacticals can reliably use their Fury of the Legion in round 2 and that means 80 bolter shots on targets within 12".

Lol deal !

As much as I love plasma weaponry, I have to admit a whole squad might be a bit OTT... Can't remember though, do they also "Get Hot" in 30k ? If so, you can expect at least a casualty on your squad per shooting phase, so going away from them might be the wisest choice...

As for Volkite weapons, I'm not so fond of their rules (never played them, so I might be proven wrong), but their looks is awesome !

So I'd say go with that !!!

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2014/06/30 13:18:43

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Yeah, plasma weapons are still Gets Hot!, well, besides the vehicle-mounted ones, but the regular plasmaguns/cannons/blastguns/fusils lumbered around by infantry does.
I would not call it OTT, this is 30K after all and you have to expect things like that, I mean if you could bring havocsquads with 10 heavy bolters or heavy flamers for 235points a squad (AC and ML at +5 pts per model and so on) would you not?
Have you seen the Iron Warrior Tyrant Siege Terminators? Cataphractii armor, combibolters, omniscope, powerfists and cyclone missilelaunchers at 295pts for 5, +50 per additional terminator for a max squad of 10, and oh, yes.. everything in terminator armour has the Implaceble Advance! Rule wich means that as long as troops are scoring in the mission played, units with this rule score just as troops do.

It's a whole new millenium out there you know? Yeeeeehaw!

I didn't mean OTT as "overpowered", just "ridiculously powerful, even highly costed" !
I am well aware that most squads have different restrictions than the 40k ones... I'll have to try and build a 30k army one day... Looks so fun !!!

It is! You should totaly abandon those silly 40k armies and come join the heresy. The Posessed are more posessed (Gal Vorbak ftw!), The terminators more terminating, the tanks more tanky (will that be flareshields and armoured ceramite for your spartan sir? why my dear fellow I think I most certainly will!), the psykers more psycotic, the AdMech.. well feth, we acctually HAVE an admech armylist! The basic armylist allows more or less any niched style of play but then comes with demands, you can't have tak cake and eat it too wich makes things more challenging.

Terminators as troops? sure! dont get them all killed because they will give extra vp's to the enemy, Drop-play? Sure, but if it can't deepstrike or take a droppod you can't use it (no tank-drop play!), and every legion comes with a special tactical pattern you can use if you want.

I have always entertained a soft spot for the iron 4th, they really eptomise the idea of 'the poor bloody infantry', no flash or glory, just a stalwart advance into enemy fire, tearing enemy positions apart with infantrywaves and the biggest guns in the greatest quantity they can lay their hands on. No honour (feth, honour gets you killed in the trenches fool! stab them in the foot and smash their head in with that shovel.) to speak of, at least in the glorified sense championed by the XIIIth and the IXth.

Also, under the current rules I feel that the Word Bearers probably has one of the most characterful armies in regards to rules and uniqe units as well as potential for a high-impact paintjob with colourful conversions, then there is the fething Gal Vorbak... hawt daymn, those groxfondlers and their awsome, awsome models has me keen for a small word bearer allied detatchment.

You rarely get to go apefeth flamboyant with the Legion, got to keep it subtle and understated and it gets frustrating at times.

Also, the Legion is a harsh mistress to latsh yourself to, it has such a rich nuance to it's background that.. well.. the rules and units rarely live up to the hype if you know what I mean? They are, almost a little too much at times, while the world eaters (as an example) are quite straight forward and ''easy'', kill gak with chainaxes/fists/your enemies legs followed by lots of [ULTRAVIOLENCE!] and leave nothing alive. They are quite mapped out and have a nice labeled and quantified box they inhabit and fill with gleeful ultraviolent murder, the Legion on the other hand is a swarm of fething greased, cinnoving, mercury-weasels that have run away from the box-storage and left a micro-nuke in their box (maybe, or they might have been hiding in it all along,..laughing) with an organisation and a master plan that would make Tzeentch himself grow a migrane and say "wait.. wha.. no, wasnt? huh?!" a lot.

So yeah.. Gal Vorbak allies perhaps..

Day 0, circa 567.006.M31, Isstvan V

Acting-Sergeant Makoor Vhen, 1st Tactical, 6th Chapter, 5th Batallion - XIXth Legion. Sgt. Vhen led the remnants of his formation in the spearhead together with the 6th's remaining heavy armour in the breakthrough towards the Lerghan ridges through the Word Bearers encirclement force; the action cost the 6th 56.3% of its remaining forces, seriously depleting the chapter to only 337 legionaires.

Yes, I am making a few ravens, what can I say? I wanted to paint something black and well.. I like the sons of Corax.
Also, I wanted to give heavy weathering a try so I thought: -what can be more weathered than someone having av very bad day on Isstvan V? So off we went. I do confess it was a bit nervewhracking to sit there with a model you have lovingly blended into a nice and clean black, crisp metallics shining and the pristine white transfers carefully applied and now you are mixing up som Agrax Eathshade, water and a drib of Valejo Beastly Brown to give it a nice mudsplashed look, then chip it up with the extreme detail brush and watered down mithril silver to finally splatter the darn thing with a watered-up mix of gloss varnish and mephiston red.
It turned out quite nicely but I had a few close calls with the washes.

Yay! I try to make each model as dynamic and interisting a I can, after all I up-scale all marines to give them better proportions and put in a lot of time painting each so.. yeah.. besides, modelling is the most fun part.

I love what you've done with the RG mate, with one caveat. The blood is too cartoonish, in some parts it looks like worn red paint.
Unless you're going for a "300" or "graphic novel" art style i think it needs to be changed. The new blood for the blood god paint from GW over the top of the existing red would add another layer of realism I think.

Feel free to ignore me, cause the model, and weathering looks great, just a personal preference

To be brutally honest:
The model & pose are awesome, so is the black armour. But the red is really too red on the black to be perceived as blood by the brain. The brightness of it on such a dark under layer makes it to be seen as red paint.

Yeah, I know.. It looked good while wet and to be honest it looks a little better in reality than in the photo, only a little mind you, so I will not be using that formula again. I'll try to make time to swing by a local store for some of that GW-blood thing, see if it's any good. Gotta be better than what I cooked up at least.

Say Sheep, when are you planning on producing some more Sons of Horus eh eh?

To everyone's delight (I like to think so at least) I have assembled another one and will be flicking some paint on it once the primer dries. Mind you, I am going to the annual Beer & Wiskey Fair (someone scored brewery-tickets and are drinking for free!) on thursday around 11:00 so according to the laws of cause and effect I will probably not get any painting done until saturday evening, mostly because 1.) the Champagne exhibitors got it in for me I tell you, How can I say no when they smile that evil smile and ask if you want to taste everything?! Ofcourse I will... 2.) I am putting up new wallpaper in the hallway on saturday morning.

Finally found the boarding shield that I built aswell, it's not going on this one, perhaps the next one though. I would like some rivets but I don't have anything suitable so yeah.. frak it.

The GW one is about 0.3-0.5mm so it does not 'eat' that much material, the teeth are a bit small though so while perfect for resin it is not that useful for white metal and gets clogged easily when working with plastic.

Thanks a lot guys, glad you like it.

This is why I take so long with things, getting the colours the way I want, trying to keep things neat even while I am slobbering washes all over the place.

Would you belive it if I told you that no actual black was used (well, 3 coats of watered down nuln oil) to paint these last models? The models are acctually basecoated with Vallejo FoW German Grey, then hit with watered down Nuln Oil, then the glare-zones are blocked in with more German Gray, then another wash, then a broad highlight of GG and then you start mixing white into the grey for about 4 layers of progressing highlights before you start working on the metallics, lenses and leather.

Then, once you have crisped up the highlights and added the transfers, well, you break out the Insane Detail brush and start mixing the wash, in this case Agrax Eathshade with a dot of Vallejo Beastly Brown and a good helping of water and ransack your paintbox for the olde Mithril Silver to do scratches and chipping with. Keeping the wash thin helps with pigment control so you can build it up in layers, one for where you want the hint of dirt up to three-four where it really aggregates like the pauldron rims, nooks on the backpack and the boots and lower geaves.

Maybe I should make a step-by-step tutorial with the next one? (Looks to be the guy with the boarding shield, built that one this afternoon, also had time to finish up a techpriest model for that Inq28 warband that -never- gets finished..

Not a bad idea STC. Dynamic blacks are really hard to do (in my experience).

Maybe I feel evil and leave out a step that is somehow crucial and then your attempts to recreate my work will be doomed! DOOOOOMED!

Or not.

Really nice--I especially like how you have integrated the decals into the model--they don't look like a sticker, which is awesome. Great job also making it look beat up, but not totally uncaring about appearances. I still think that military personnel would care about keeping their equipment and armor in good shape.

Battlefield wear and tear, yes, but "This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine..."

I could imagine this guy putting a dart through Fulgrim's temple for sure.

Thank you, the idea is to use the Raven Guard I make here for a future play-through of the Victory is Vengance Campaign, the XIXth Legions escape from the Dropsite Massacre in the Urgall Depressionon to their narrow escape from the Gular Salt Plains on Isstvan V, 98 days after the Onset of the Dropsite Massacre.

So the models represent legionaires in the first hour of conflict of 567.006.M31 as the XIX are desperately trying to push through the traitors' encirclement and escape annihilation, as such their wargear is not yet rundown or failing but their freshly painted warplate is chipped and scratched from enemy bolterfire, shrapnel, streaking with mud erupted from ceaseless artillerybarrages and rainfall forced out of the atmosphere by the unattural pressures brought on by mass-orbital deployments.

It's a Bad Day on Isstvan V.

Awesome concept! WIth all the new HH novels about the "Shattered Legions" I've been contemplating some Iron Hands, actually. So I really like the background concept.

Disgusting traitor legions.

The iron hands have some realy awsome models, I especially like the Medusan Imortals, sadly the Mk III warplate is the one I can't do much with. To upscale those I need to resculpt the upper part of the forwardfacing thigh-plates and while I could.. well, I don't want to. Besides, the Mk III is as good as non-existent among the XIXth and XXth legions due to it being too slow and loud and at the time of Isstvan V the XIXth have been alotted a large number of trial mk VI suits and the XXth are well underway with replacing the Mk IV 'Maximus' with their own, covertly developed and produced, superior variant of the Martian-produced Mk VI 'Corvus'.

I'd like to see someone doing a White Scars force for HH but I guess buying a gazillion Scimitar Jetbikes and Javelin Speeders will be taxing for the wallet.

The 30K IH FW models are almost 'true scale' too because they're actually STANDING UP STRAIGHT!

They look great because of it too!

Yes, I agree. Also, many of them have cool bases, which they are standing on--I have incorporated two of the Apothecaries into my Blood Angels force, and they are way bigger than regular (hunched) marines. I bought some of the GW Imperial basing bits, and even that helps. I have some of the new(ish) Sternguard models (not FW), and they are beautiful...but not tall. So at least the basing helps a bit.

Interestingly (and completely off topic here) the Space Hulk miniatures are also bigger--the Librarian is gigantic! But, again, some of that is because of the base--he is standing on some stairs, basically. But it certainly makes for a magnificently large miniature on the table top.

Thanks for the cool info here, especially about the variants of the armor. I didn't know anything about that when I started into the hobby a few years ago, but I think it's pretty important if you're doing a HH force to get it "right" eh? White scars are certainly cool--I just read "Scars" and it's tempting, for sure. They would have "older" marks, I would expect, since they had been off on the fringes, exploring and attacking like hunters on the steppes. FW will eventually get around to some of these other Legions, but I have to admit that I'm impatient. I'd love to see some White Scars (or, for that matter, Blood Angels!) FW models.

What I am actually leaning towards right now is a real "Scattered Legions" force--like in "Vulkan Lives" or "Unremembered Empire." A mixture of Iron Hands, Salamanders, Raven Guard, and maybe even the odd Space Wolf...cobbled together and fighting the good fight. A couple of White Scars could definitely fit into that mix, I think.

Yeeeah.. sooo.. I kind of found most of a baneblade in a box and have been messing around with that kit in between my inq28 stuff. I'll get back to this soon.

Hello guys! I'm baaaaaaaaack!

So.
After a completely uninspired spring has passed, the creative fluids had built up to the point where something -would- be worked on.
I have not gotten into a painting mood yet but i think it's only a matter of time until I pick up the brushes and finish that wealth of half-finished paintjobs I have for the Legion. Also.. I have to buy new brushes.. so that's a hurdle to overcome.

Anyway, I had that old scratchbuild for some kind of flyer sitting around.. needing some fresh ideas and a while lot of planning, so while I do that I figured that I'd build something!
Luckily I had an old (almost complete) baneblade kit lurking on a shelf in my basement storage and I decided that the Legion really needs a superheavy assault tank. Namely the somewhat overlooked Stormlord.

With a twist.

The rules for the thing is quite nice but the model.. meh. Also, any tank with the "Assault Vehicle" rule that has a load of.. well anything imperial needs a warp-damned frontal assaultramp and that's that.

That also means a modelled interior, those are always fun.

So, here is where I'm at right now. Interior needs some more work but it's mostly details and fiddly-work.

I am trying to build it in a modules so it can be easily picked apart when it is finished for ease of painting and also so that the roofsection (to be built soon) can be removed and reveal the interior.
We'll see how that pans out.

Now, the flyer..
Here things are going slooooow. But I have outlined the main design ideas and made some doodles on how to put it together but this one's gonna take time.

Gentlemen, I am building a Stormbird Assault Lander.

Here we have the lower troopdeck and what will be the floor of the rear loading bay. As you can see the Rhino (yes, the rules for the stormbird allows for the transport of a rhino,.. or 5 contemptors..) has ample space and a marine would easily be able to move around it, checking mag-locks, kicking the tracks or avoiding the chaplains as he pleases.
