Turret looks real good! Interesing not, the turret in more of English and common would be C-5 for the turret, in Russian, it would translate as S-5 as their "S" kinda looks like "C", so it stays the same, but could be either C-5 or S-5 depending on your PoV

For my theme of army, and Vik knows too, it would translate as S-5 for me, LOL!

Like the get of my lawn but if you do add a flower pot next to it

Yes oils are great for there length of dry time, when I used to make 1/35 scale kits I used to use them for skin tones easier to blend.

Thank you

You won't be waiting too long hk1x1, I spent 2 hours on it on the weekend getting it to the chipping stage pictures coming soon.

Also I bought an Imperial Fist contemptor from evilbay, it came with a plasma cannon and power fist, brand new as well. The condition is pretty decent as well, some mould slips but nothing I can't deal with at a reasonable saving too [much pleased].
I've had my eye out for one for a while and was planning to get one from FW at some point in the distant future. I was going to get one with an assault cannon but I've always had a soft spot for ZM style games so I'll stick with the plasma cannon and base it for such...

@LDD: I'll see if I can find a pot of petunias, I can't promise anything though, it's not as though they just drop out of the sky.

@Shas: I didn't think using Russian lettering, mind you I only have GW decal sheets to work with, they seem to lack Cyrillic script unfortunately.

Progress so far on the second turret:

I might try and use the same painting method on those mythical ragnaroks.

I also tried a different skin colour on the Veteran with bolter and tech adept:

I'm not really convinced, I don't think I pulled it off very well, I know there is an odd patch on the top of baldy's head ... not sure how that happened. I wasn't really going for a current human skin colour after all 30 thousand years -or whatever- is enough time for evolution to alter cosmetic details of human physiology such as skin colour.

I've also been working on the last 4 militia whilst I have my brushes out:

still very rough, just working on the main colours atm, not happy with the blue. Too much contrast in those images atm.

Thanks for stopping by

Turret is coming on nicely although I think a red glaze on the optical lense could lift it a bit more, overall looks pretty good I gather you will be adding more detail to the flamer guard.

Not sure about the new skin tone kind of reminds me of the mutants inTotal Recall the arnie one, the general colouring of the group is coming together and like the way you keep an over all tone to your units.

Turret looking great, really on to something with them, they look just right.

Guys are looking great as always, I know what LDD means, although they are all distinct, they match so well together.

Skin tone looks good, does look like they have a condition at the mo, but you are right why do we all try for pinky.

@LDD: Yea I'll do something with that turret guard, I didn't intend to spray it all black... I had actually applied the liquid mask to part of it as though the heat had made the paint flake off ... then I sprayed over it... smart. So I'll have to come up with something new to do with it.

@Cam: Cheers bud.

Decided to throw myself into the latest round of the painting competition, since it's an excuse to try painting some zombies as I've made no further progress on the militia, I've had the models knocking around a bit and it makes a break that hopefully will reinvigorate me to finish the militia off this side of Christmas.

I wonder just how much I have painted this year... not much I'm guessing.

Cheers all.

You've painted more than me but then that's not hard, unless you count walls doors etc

Anyway back on topic might do you good to move out the box so to speak, sometimes things can get repetive or mundane so a fresh or not so in this case might be good just for fun sake.
Painting zombies I mean, hence not so fresh

As for the turret guard have you not considered the heated metal approach ? You know where the metal becomes partially discoloured ?

That's actually what I was thinking of doing. That technique and I have a long checkered history.

Anyone have any tips on pulling it off well?

There was a pretty good video on YouTube showing the technique being done, I can't think of the exact text you need to enter but should be pretty easy to find.

Modest as always Cam, that's basically what I have been doing in the past, however I usually seem to go overboard with the brown and end up with a mess.

I'm mostly finding videos teaching me how to curl my hair...

There is a not too bad explanation here:
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/how-to-paint-heat-stained-gun-barrels.html

I wonder if I can combine it with the "soot stained" look

That's the tutorial I was going to post and is the one I follow; although I just use washes of brown, purple and blue (covering less of the barrel each time and blending them together) and then a dry-brush of silver on the end.

I gave that heat discolouration thing a try on the flamer emplacement after, tried to soot it up a little too. I admit it's probably a little overkill but what the hell.

... more progress on the militia et al:

Still a lot to do on these. I think my painting standards have slipped badly.

I've been thinking of picking up one of the battle of calith boxes, I might not be able to get one, cost and it probably being sold out by the time I can get around to getting one. But in the event that I do I made some Boarding shields with the idea of converting some of them up to make mark 4 breacher marines, to mix with a pack of FW's mark 3s. I figure I could make quite a cool sized HH ZM army from the Calith box + the few models I have right now. Imperial Fists OFC, speaking of which the new FW decal sheet for the fists is a thing of beauty much better than the old sheet that I have lying around here somewhere.

You can check out a 3D view of the shields here: http://shpws.me/KFhV .

I know I don't usually show my 3d stuff here but I'm actually quite proud of these.
Only thing missing is the hand & arm holding the shield as I'm not sure on the dimensions yet.

Cheers Para.

Oh that heat discoloration if good! I tend to also use the tinbitz, then black, most of the black out front for the sooting effect on flamer and meltas, but flamers get plenty more soot than meltas

Nice job mate and I see a little blue there as well what did you use in the end paint powders ?

Looks good and has pulled the scheme together nicely, I also like the lenses and the use of 2 colours gives the impression of different systems in place, I find the same colour lenses on a model can look a little repetitive at times.

I am not sure why you think your painting standards have slipped looks pretty good to me and matches in with your previous exploits.
What is it your having issues with ?

The only thing I am not sure about is the the guy in the middle top picture, but not the painting he just seems a little top heavy.

Although in the the next picture from the back it looks ok , so I think it is just the a mix of the camera angle and those damn elf legs.

Hey any progress on the casting mate

Heat discolouration is spot on, not overdone, or rather OTT is necessary for this kind of thing at this scale.

Managed to get my mitts on a pre-order of Battle of Calth from Firestorm games along with paints and a new brush all for less than retail ... and free delivery .

And I should have a box arriving with two sets of Maelstrom's Edge Scenery sprue at some point soon as it looks like I'm top of the reward list , better find something to use them for soon.

I'll bet it's going to live in it's box for a while though, there are a few things I'd like to get finished first, not least finishing those Genswick which I'm aiming to do by the end of the year.
Next year the aim is to finish the small renegade army I have half made and maybe the two small Bolt action platoons (Soviets and Germans) and possibly a small Kings of War army made from Perry miniatures. The Warlord and Perry miniatures are still NoS for now so It might be that I opt not to make them and instead clear them out (most likely the Bolt action minis since I'm getting fed up of little dudes with guns).

Whilst I was working on those shields I made some small shield shaped pieces of extra armour, to personalise my fists (as and when I get around to making them), included in that is extra pairs of thigh armour ... however useful that might be.
Spoiler:

@ graven: Too true .

@ stonned_astartes: Thanks, give it a shot, once you've got the tools you'll surprise yourself, and if you need help or tips, just ask; on Dakka, whatever you get stuck with, there is someone to offer useful advice.

@ Shas: Thanks mate, my tin bitz dried up years ago, for this I just used various layers of GW washes sepia -> a mix with a bit of red mixed in to make purple ->blue then watered down black paint on parts closest to the nozzle, adding more layers or diluting edges down as needed. Flamers should get more soot, they also don't get as hot as meltas apparently so your discolouration is probably more realistic than mine .

@LDD: See above reply to shas as to how I painted the heat discolouration.

I'm sure my shading is becoming a bit too subtle, especially considering how bad my photos are.

Probably the positioning of the arms and the snake arms, the elf legs don't help I agree.

There is a little way to go yet until I can cast those bits, moulds are nearly done.

@ DrH: Cheers, they were a real ... thriller to paint.

next time I might try a more subtle effect ... maybe.

I'll try and get those militia finished soon, really want to move on to other things now.

Emplacements AND militia finished.

Also I've got my rewards for backing the Maelstorm's Edge kickstarter.

I went for two of these. These are some seriously thick sprues, with very thick pieces. I can see it's going to be a bit of a challenge to fit these in to some things as the pieces are a good 5mm + thick so it's not easy to just stick things on and go. Not bad however, 've got more than a few failed projects that these might provide the kick I need to get going on them.

@LDD: LOL yea I have enough toasters lying around to do the avengers in toasters ... that may be going too far.

@Shas & Cam: Thanks

Thorster is done now, just needs a bit of white on the wings and a coat of matt varnish, the wings are white metal and the paint is chipping off just from handling... Finished pics tomorrow.

Thorster is now done and dusted.

Not too happy about the verdigris on the skull thing but meh.

I've got a few things lined up that I'd like to get finished by the end of the year. So far I've hit most of my targets, the militia and turrets were amongst them.

Next on the block are the two search lights and the Two ladies in red for my little =][= warband.

The search light on the left was airbrushed, on the right a bristly brushed, some how I'm going to have to make the one on the left look more like the one on the right.

As to the two girls, the bases are sorted but I'm stuck on what colour to paint the claw arms on the girl to the left, right now I'm thinking metallic steel to match the rest of the armour, althrough something like bone white is a possiblity.
The colour scheme is black, white, bone and red, with green as an optional spot colour that I might leave for purity seals and lenses, if I don't just opt for a straight bright red.

Lastly the next round of the Dakka painting competition is an open category, I may paint a tank ... but which?

Let me know which you'd rather see me paint next month:

A) Genswick Ragnarok (yes it's finally ready to paint).

or

B) Imperial fists Vindicator.

Cheers all,
OMN.

The Rag has it I guess.

Time to start working out on what I'm going to paint it ... besides green. There is a lot of surface area to work with.

I've still not worked out what colour to do the claws on the top one.

What's left to do: finish the metallics, reflection / illumination on the black parts, browns, few other small details that are not painted yet. Might re-paint the skull head and maybe one or 2 other things.

Cheers for your input all.

Yup.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, much appreciated.

I'm taking images as I go, so expect plenty of paint-in-progress shots.

Here it is with the chipping going on.
Once this is on you have to finish all the overlaying layers within something like 36 hours or really the sooner the better as it is basically just natural rubber and once it solidifies it'snearly impossible to peal off.

Yellow patches on the side are masking tape for where I'm going to apply the unit markings. white-blue-white, instead of the white-red-white that I have used previously.

Then I start getting the main layer going starting with a darker colour in recesses.

This didn't last long however as I managed to create an air leak inside the compressor from the pump running too hot, I'm using an Iwata neo air (it's cheap-ish and so far it does what I want). Inside is a little plastic joiner male-male connector, basically two bits of different sized plastic tube (1/8 BSP and something else) melted together with a kink between them.
Now after running the compressor for about an hour (something it says you should not do), the air emerging from the compressor was understandably quite hot, causing the plastic to soften at that kink. Added that the air was being pumped out at 20-30 psi caused that softened plastic to stretch outwards, like a balloon until ... pop.
Once the motor had cooled some what and I'd found the problem, 5 minutes with a low temperature soldering iron fixed it.
Yea ... instructions.

I've finished spraying the green on now, and cleaned off the chipping, but after the issues with the compressor slowed me down and I had to rush through the main colour coat and getting the chipping done, combined with taking a small break from it to work on some other things so I've not got any more pics, I'll take some tomorrow.

Cheers
OMN.

Thank you all for your kind words.

To answer your question LDD, I have been really quite ill such that at one point I was concerned that I may have had to spend Christmas in hospital. I'm nearly recovered now so, we'll see how it goes.

Back to modelling.

I recently had chance to order a few bits from Shapeways, (they had 20% discount + free p&p around black Friday). so I had a 6 of those boarding shields -that you all probably don't remember- printed.
See fore yourself how they turned out [my shield and holder is walled in red], I've tried to show some marines and another (FW) boarding shield for size comparison:

Seems I got a little over ambitious on the size... oops, I'll have to go back to earlier versions and remake them in a smaller size for regular marines.
HOWEVER it IS the perfect size to stick on some FW Tartaros Terminators; which, with the addition of a some thunder hammers that I will make, will make for some spiffing looking TH/SS terminators for 30k [Imperial fists get what is essentially a storm shield giving a 3++ save in their legion specific equipment list]

Note: the terminator on the left is my current wip commander for my fists, I may swap the sword for another power axe from the FW red scorpions librarian and honour guard kit so it matches the SM captain I made & painted before.

I also made the hand hold placement a bit too long to clasp onto a marines forearm.

Also pictured above the line up is some thigh pads and smaller shields to stick on to armour that I made but haven't had chance to clean up yet.

I have no plans to make more of that turret as of yet. As a size comparison just for the hell of it:

Thanks Guys.

While I was spraying the tank I got some paint on all the other weapons for the turret emplacements, a quick and nasty paint job but it'll do.

Stock weapons (clockwise from top left): multi-laser, heavy bolter, heavy flamer, autocannon.

Upgraded weapons (clockwise from top left): melta-cannon, inferno cannon, twin heavy bolter, long-barrelled autocannon.

Cannon with two different muzzle breaks:

The Rag is coming along, been working on blocking in the other main colours, I've got to finish painting the tracks, chipping and sort which decals to use before I can start with the weathering proper. Pictures to come later.

Hey mate,

Really lovely work ...that turret has a really brutal aesthetic to it .... and the oils really give a great weathering look!

Very cool!

Thanks a lot Magos, really appreciate it.

I've got the Ragnarok up to the "oil wash" stage.

Once I'd finished blackening the tracks applied a layer of either 'grey black' or 'German grey' then air brushed a colour named 'Dirt' over some parts.
I'll probably go over most of that with a powder wash as I'm going for more of an urban dust & dirt look rather than mud.

... And ofc I had a dig around and sorted some decals out for the beast.

(I really should have uploaded a bigger image than this... nvm).

next up a black pin wash then rust & grease before I can seal the oils and get the powders on.

This is not going to be easy to finish in the time frame...

In case I don't get chance to say so....

Merry Christmas everyone.

Some Dirty pics here...

... tank pictures that is.

I've just got a matt varnish and some more weathering to go now, mostly on the tracks especially to cover defects.

After I took the above images the other day I tried to make a rust mix consisting of MIG rust pigments, Burnt umber oil and diluted down with thinner to more of a wash...
I kind of flicked it across the model creating small splashes all over it I tried to remove or turn them into streaks but there are lots of little spots of orange on the model.
Now they are dry they are really hard to remove ... oops I'll try and mask it.

Thanks all, hope you are all enjoying Christmas

Sweet armour matey ! When I add rust ( albeit too heavily ) it's a heavy oil wash/ streak rather than pigment. I find I can tone it and thin it as necessary so much easier.
However your version look really good on the olive green. Very nice work mate !

Yea maybe I'll get her sister tank done by next Christmas..

Happy new year all.

I hope you all had a happy holiday.

I had a quick gander over all the things I've done this past year and compiled a little list. Along with a second with all the things I didn't do or finish the previous year.

Projects completed in 2015:

- Imperial Fists Space Marine Captain in Artificer Armour,
- 5 zombies,
- 2 Turret emplacements with 10 different weapons,
- 3 Inquisitor Retinue members (1 Archoflagellent, 1 warrior with flamer and 1 death cultist),
- 2* 10 man Militia Squads,
- 1 militia officer and Tech servitor,
- 10 (or so...not counting) Miscellaneous Genswick to fill ranks,
- 2 Searchlights,
- 1 Ragnarok Vanquisher,
- a bin, 2 televisions and a radio,
- and lastly a flying toaster.

I might have over looked some other things but I'm just going by what I've uploaded to the Dakka Gallery.

To Do in 2016 (in no particular order):
- An Imperial Fists Librarian,
- 4 Genswick Stormtroopers,
- 4 more zombies
- 2 Genswick Cyclops operators,
- 12 Boltgun armed Grenadiers made from a mix of Empire greatswords and Scions,
- Finish the Valkyrie/Vendetta,
- 3 more Inquisitorial Retinue + an Inquisitor to lead them,
- Ragnarok 2... be nice to finish the tank destroyer variant too...,
- Imperial fists Vindicator,
- one or two odd things and get started on my Betrayal at Calth box.
- Make more traitor Guard?
- Historicals?
- Terrain?

Plenty to look forward to.

list might become too long if I went into that.

Now, I'm wondering how the hell I can convert the BaC Terminator captain into a terminator sergeant with a helmet and swapping the arm to a power sword:

Anyone know if the FW cataphractii arms fit with the plastic ones?

Also I threw together a BaC marine quickly with blue tack to see how some bits that I made to personalise and add some much needed character to them.

The shoulder shield I've made quite a few different styles and sizes but I'm having issues making a "sprue" of them safely. I really like these.

and the boarding shield isn't quite so huge, but I've still made updated the model to make it a fair bit smaller. I'll be making some more shields similar to this.

All these marines are going to need a ride of course, so..

It's a "Heresy Marine Cruiser" made by Dakka member CalgarsPimpHand
and can be bought from his shapeways store "GrimDarkBits" https://www.shapeways.com/shops/grimdarkbits

It's an awesome model with a great amount of detail, I'm looking forward to getting this painted up when I get the scheme nailed down.

Thanks everyone for your comments on the tank. 5th in the painting contest in this round.

Started painting the Cruiser.

I'm tempted to strip it down and start again, my old yellows have lost their binding medium or whatever it's called so they look a bit chalky, bad coverage and. The black hasn't covered well either, but that's because I watered it down a bit too much.

The more vived colours [Prow and Bridge] are where I've brush painted over with Vallejo Game Air gold or sun yellow.

I'm making a real pigs ear of it atm.

Good work on getting the tank finished. Looks nice.

As an alternative to just making the shield smaller (which I assume you are just reducing the scale), maybe make a shield that is just as long but narrower; that will reduce it's apparent bulk (making it look smaller) but keep it useful for those that want to shield their legs (the purpose of a shield that long; see kite shields).

Also, don't be afraid of making the shield too small. They are always a trade off between coverage and cumbersomeness; a big shield may protect most/all of you, but it gets in the way. A smaller shield may not cover all of you, but you can move about and attack easier, and you can always move the shield to protect from an attack (see buckler for that extreme).

Ship is a nice design. Good luck sorting out the yellow.

Post by: OneManNoodles

Afternoon all,

Feels like a long time since I've posted anything...

I finished painting the Genswick stormtroopers as well as the Cyclops Teams (I love these little things).

I have had a SM librarian knocking around a while, I'd started painting him ages ago, getting the base colours down, but I didn't like what I had done and lost interest burying the model until last month when I dug him out and thought I'd get him painted up. He isn't really for my little heresy force (It's not fluffy to have librarians or mk7 power armour for the Fists in heresy times, until the battle of Terra, since Dorn kept all of the legion's librarians "safe" in his basement and the Fists ram-raided Mars and looted a pile of MK7 armour and spent the rest of the heresy until the endgame fortifying Terra IIRC).

Anyway I've been enjoying painting him thus far, I've been using an online colour wheel to decide on the colour scheme, to see the palette I'm looking at go here. The blue being the main armour colour and the red-orange the tabbard, purity seals and other small details. All the metallics will be NMM; considering I'd like to have some shiny black surfaces it is going to be a challenge to differentiate between the two in places.
I'm not sure what colour to make the staff.

The base is horrible, there's bits of sand stuck to the tabbard and all sorts, so I'll have to make it look like soft dirt or something. Even so I'll probably have him finished by the end of tomorrow, nice to paint vibrant colours for a change.

I hear what you are saying with the shields Doc and I've taken your words on board for some other pieces that I've been making... It isn't quite so simple as just scaling, I have to re-arrange details in order to preserve details at a certain size, but this isn't an issue since I make backups as I progress through making something as all I've had to do is backtrack, rescale as appropriate ... I should really write a version control plug in to do this for me...

These shields are intended to be used more like modern armed response ballistic shields ( at least that's what the description says) so they are intended to be bulky.
I've made two new, smaller, versions; the left is the smaller of the two new shields and as a matter of fact might would be guardsman size if I adapt the hand hold.

Still no yellow paint ... in the post apparently.

Thanks for stopping by,
OMN.

That red has come out great matey, how did you get it like that from an orange base? Deep red wash ?

OMN's stuff ... Necrons, stuff. @ 2016/02/11 20:50:49

Post by: OneManNoodles

@Cam: Thanks, for some reason I've always liked painting red, its such an easy colour.

@ Big H: Cheers. Nope, nothing so easy, just lots of layers from a mix based on Vallejo Game Colour (VGC) Bloody red mixed with black initially then built up with increasing amounts of the red adding and a little VGA sun yellow in increasing amounts to make more of an orange and VMC Stone grey mixed for the top most highlights.

I now have yellow finally I've done a bit more on the lib, like starting to paint the black and figuring out how to do NMM steel and silver. painting really small chains get tedious fast, and I'm really not sold on the ... whatever it is, on the staff. Still there is so much stuff on the model to paint I do not have a lack of tiny surfaces to practice on.

Dakka's Gallery is an invaluable resource to mine for reference pictures. Whilst not useful I'm finding this Terminator Librarian by Seemann quite useful

I've also put together the first 5 of a legion tactical squad:

I'd like to have the other 5 members in mk3 armour and maybe some mk2 at some distant point in the future, going to be fun figuring out just how I'm going to airbrush them yellow.

Since my aim ATM is to build a small 1000pts ZM force I thought I might try a Vigilator to lead them. WIP shot:

I want to expand his bolter magazine and see if I can made some sort of sight for it as well.

I really need to make some terrain.

Post by: OneManNoodles

Large update, I've spoilerized some of the images as they are 3dprinting related.

I'm cracking on with the BaC set and I've been making some more parts to personalise them, atm I'm trying to focus on making the HQs and Squad sergeants ... simply because they are more fun

The Tactical sgt has been scrapped and parts swapped around to make a breacher sergeant, using a pile of bits slowly purchased from ebay bits sellers, that I'm sure If I bought them in one go upon looking at the cost I may have a stroke. The shileds are the perfect size now IMO, I've made some with Fists insignia and iconography on for use on sergeants and a breacher consul that I'm planning to make from the BaC chaplain.

I've finally made a hand hold for those shields that will fit ... I could have put more detail on it but for now I'm just happy I made a hand.
Spoiler:

The Terminator Praetor has given me a bit of a headache, it's been a pain to find an arm to swap the chain fist for but I've managed it however after carving up the Gorget(?) to fit a helmeted head on (all marines in this army will wear helmets as I'd like to build and base it as a boarding force ... at least initially) but as that helmet failed to fit I decided to use one of the ones that comes with the cataphractii terminators so now I'll have to sculpt a new one. Add to that fixing the gaps on the cloak and there's plenty of sculpting to do.

For the regular terminators I've started to magnetise them (well ... one, so I can see how many magnets it's going to take, in case you are wondering the answer is a lot...)

I have made some stormshields and some plasma parts for combi-plasmas, magnetising those however may be a little ott.
Spoiler:
Shields:

For MY Praetor, I've thrown this guy together from random bits purchases, plus a few parts (the iron halo and shields) I made myself.

The right arm with the gun and the legs are from the EC pheonix terminator kit, all I've done on those is carve out the III on the leg and carefully sculpt on a VII, and get rid of that silly wing motif on the arm and added a fist. The reason why he has a second right arm pictured is because I've made a storm shield for that arm. The rhight arm is goig to hold one of the relic blades that comes in the FW Red Scorpions librarian and honour guard kit. Same one as is this guy has:
Spoiler:

With the general Idea that it's the same captain, just different armour and much smaller halo.

And finally...

... I've given up on the librarian, apart from the basing I'm not doing any more on him, I'm fed up of failing at NMM for now.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading, apologies about the glut of virtual 3D modeling I've recently finished a large number of items that I am unusually pleased with, and once I have them made they will be making an appearance on my fists.
Other than that it's a large update because I've made such slow progress on a number of things that there hasn't been much worth mentioning.

OMN.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Clockwise from top-left:
Terminator Sergeant: Gorget done, looks a little un-even as it is, probably should have used a miliput-greenstuff blend but nvm, it'll look fine with some paint on it. His shoulder plates and straps don't match, whilst this is something I could have fixed I cba now, it can be put down to "replacement parts".

Vigilator: Made a box ammo clip and added a sort of weapon sight to him. Needs a cameleoline cloak making for him. I'm not sure if I should give him a sheathed power sword or not, wouldn't be hard to carve one out of plasticard.

New tactical sergeant.

Champion: Head and weapon swap so far, it's not a particularly pretty sword for one that is "master crafted" but with left handed swords being hard to come by it'll do. Going to be fun trying to magnetise that left arm so I can swap it for a boarding shield, I'd like to be able to dual purpose him as either a delegatus or a champion, with the boarding shield as an option for the stone gauntlet RoW.

I find myself liking the idea of making a master of signals and a moriat, what would that make? 6 Hq choices now? Anyway...

I'll order a pack of shields to finish them off tomorrow, just need to update the file as I noticed the plastic cataphracti hands are about 25% bigger than the FW hand size, so once I get them I can make a demo model for the storm and boarding shields.

OMN.

Loving the new sizing of the sheild almost makes we ant to make marines ....... almost

I actually thought the hand for the sheild was looking pretty amazing, especially when you won't even see much of it top marks mate.

Loving the breaching sergeant I like the slightly relaxed posing.

Now once you finish with these maybe we can get back to some sensible under dogs again

Glad to see you've talked Vic and Jake at Victoria lamb into making some motorbikes, a load off my mind, besides Jake had made a really awesome looking bike already that just needs a few finishing touches and with Vic's sculpting, the finished article is really going to be something.

I've decided to have a clear out of all the bits that I've cast up, so far I've got 12 75g-ish bags full of all sorts, mostly from my collection of miscasts, to get rid of.
Ooo... No, no I really don't need any more bits, I MUST find a use for all the bits I already have.

As Cam' says, even the miscasts are worth getting hold of.

I'll add my endorsement to this well worth the investment, even the miscast are well worth it and usually a little GS is all you need nothing major.

I think it is the bike Jake previewed ages ago it has only just gone to print, I think the pestering helped move it LOL.

Thanks guys

I have some nice fine fibre point drawing pens that I'm going to see if I can draw text on that book with and try to varnish over the top without it without smudging. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Now to paint the town Valkyrie red.

Pics tomorrow, but for now here's the base for that nurgle model I made a while ago and forgot to share.

Get well soon mate.

Painted the valk interior red:

I found that more fun to do than I thought possible, under all that red there are layers of grey airbrushed on to give lighter and darker areas for the red to cover. There's a few patches to touch up where the masking tape didn't quite cover but nothing major, besides most of it isn't going to be visible after I stick the roof on.

Writing on the book is done, just drew on the paint and sprayed it with acrylic matt varnish this morning. Basing done too, pelenty of rubble added to cover up the places where I glued sand to the model rather than the base.

Cloak & sheathed sword added to the vigilator. I'm not sure whether to use that small shield as a clasp or sculpt something new. This guy is going to be in black armour, I've decided he isn't going to be an imperial fist, a marine on some legion exchange program maybe; whether he is raven guard or even a former luna wolf who has become a blackshield I am not yet decided.
The cloak is ok I messed it up in a few parts, it's made from really thinly rolled out greenstuff cut into shape then layed gently over the model, the problem with doing this is every time you try to correct something before it's set you usually make things worse.

And lastly a WIP shot of my master of signal.

There is a second aerial to make, I'll re-make that lens thing, add cabling etc. I hope the head will fit in the torso, there's a brass rod going through it atm so I'm relying on eye to check.

The cloak works well and keep the mini shield as the fastener for it, I wondered what you meant about painting the Valk red

But I decided to keep quite on it, now I realise it's the interior I gather to represent the lighting ?

Can't really tell much about the master of signal from the pic to be honest with you, but I am sure it will look good

Thanks everyone.
I put all "skill" with that cloak down to fluke. But yea thanks all I like how that model has turned out, glad to hear you all agree.

Agreed the signaller isn't great, it's a crappy picture and there's a fairway to go on it, it's based on the FW model here: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Legion-Champion-and-Master-of-the-Signal
It'll look great when I'm done I hope....

And yea LDD it's meant to indicate lighting, no jumping on stage mid way through Das Rheingold with a bucket of paint.
I happened to pick a particularly bright and vibrant red, it'll do for now.

I just had an email this morning saying that Shapeways have free shipping this week starting Monday 7th March until "March 13, 2015 at 11:59 PM PDT".
Just in case anyone is interested. It's about time I wrote a thread in the news section about my shapeways store.

Plenty to do,

After seeing the master signaller on FW I understand where your heading now, don't forget I ain't a marine fan so have a limited understanding of them.

But looking at the reference picture yours is on track mate, you have created a decent alternative if not better IMHO.

As for the lighting tone it should work well, you got crew and if so how you gong to tackle them ?

I like to get my stuff from you casted in resin to be honest, but I do have a look at your store every now and then to see what's added.

How's the mini coming by the way

Good evening! Epic blog and cracking minis. I've not had time to read everything though. The breacher shields are epic! Where do they come from and how do you get hold of them please? I'm making EC breachers and I've been hunting for shields like the ones you have - plenty of room to create a "human shield"

OMN's stuff ... Necrons, stuff. @ 2016/03/07 21:29:24

Hey, the breacher shields are from my shapeways store "Uncanny Automaton" it's linked in my signature, there's free postage by the end of the week too.
Thanks nice to know you like them .

In other news I received a package containing some of those new arms for the shields, along with some storm shields, a set of combi-plasma and a hand full of other things .
I've just managed to get them all washed, dried and given a grey spray. Pics on their way!

Edit:

@LDD: Thanks mate, I forgot about the crew and there are meant to be some heavy bolters inside as well ... not like I cant add them later I guess, the pilot & gunner I plan on painting as normal along with the cockpit, but the heavy bolters and their gunners I'd like to paint the front of them normally then airbrush the top and back to give the effect of illumination, at least that's the plan.
Which mini? if you mean that signaller guy, not much happening atm, distracted elsewhere. I'm painting one of the boarding shields up for show atm.

I've had chance to get some images up so here you are:

Here's a selection of some of the bits I've worked on, all I've done so far is give them a warm bath with a fair bit of washing up liquid and scrubbed with an old toothbrush then sprayed grey:

From top: Shield for an officer and shield of rivets, then two shields with some iconography modelled on, then at the bottom a pair of stormshields one with an IF logo symbol. Also shown is the reverse sides of the shields, with the stormshields having two different sizes of hands, ... the new plastic cataphractii have larger hands.

The arm fittings are great so far, however I'm finding that I'm going to have to make the rest of the arm holding the shield as well as an arm to hold a bolter as it seems my plan to use the plastic arms has fallen through a bit.

Stormshield on a terminator:

Stormshield for the Praetor:

The option of combi-plasma, since I didn't know this FW upgrade set contained them until this weekend when I actually bothered looking ... so I'll probably withdraw these.

These shields might look a little ... grainy or rough, but that'll clear off and with a bit of smoothing they come out ok, started painting one I made earlier.

A word of warning for anyone trying to wash little tiny resin or 3d printed things (like my shoulder shields or whatever the proper name is) when pouring away all those soap suds, pour it through a fine sieve, sometimes things get trapped in the bubbles and away to the sewer they go. It was nothing hugely important thankfully just reminded me how much of an idiot I am.

I'm a little run off my feet atm, working on a commission as well...

@DrH: Cheers mate, I'm surprised how well it worked, next time I'll have to try something a bit more ambitious. It's probably my favourite librarian model that GW have produced.

@Stormwall: Thanks that head is a third attempt, "ease" feels more like trial and error. I do yes, they have the same arm fittings with them as the regular shields. I've half a mind to fill in the gun hole (?) and turn those into combat shields or something.

@LDD: No progress, I opened the file a few times to work on it but I'm a bit stuck :(. However I'll be putting this marine madness to the side for a while, so I'll try and do some more on it, at the very least I can get the track sections finished.

@rtb02: I'm trying to see if I can combine some now, however it's a big file and is taking ages to upload (thanks for the crap upload speed ISP) and auto-check, I estimate I can get them to under £50 for 15. There are sales and free shipping events (like this week) occasionally, I only wish I knew when :(. They just announce them as they start or as happened around Christmas time there was a "new offer each day". I'll also see if I can get them into a cheaper material

I was planning on resin casting these at some point that could be a while away at the rate I'm going.

Cheers,
OMN.

Here's a less crappy shot of my master of signals:

I finished painting that shield after, practice towards getting my paint scheme nailed...

...and the back with handhold attached to a chopped up arm, as I intended it for...

... just wants a spray with matt varnish to seal in the oils and get rid of that glossy finish, I'll go over the lenses and screen with a brush on gloss after.

With the arm attachment as it is it works nicely and can give a wide range of more 'dynamic' poses, depending on what arm was butchered, it should even be possible to repose some normal SM arms to fit with it and since it's so big you can use it plus the shoulder pad to cover most of it. But still I'd like to make the rest of an arm to do so properly however I'm probably going to have to write a suit of commands to do inverse kinematics for wire frames properly.

I've also had a play with ideas for the tank scheme for the fists I'm stuck between a standard all yellow & black look, or to use a solid grey (for urban environments) for most of the armour but still keeping yellow and black parts, here's a render of what it might look like on my pholus ... since this is to paint the vindicator:

Next on the hit list is to work out what basing to give the fists and, since I'd like to make something that wouldn't look out of place in a starships hull (zone mortalis) how the hell I'm going to make it. Since until I get that done I can't really start painting.

@Kepora: Yep I can thin them down a touch.

@evildrcheese: I think both parts required a similar amount of effort to make, however the shield took a significant amount of imagination.

Thanks for reading,
OMN.

Master signaller has come on well like the attention to detail makes for an interesting miniature, nice paint work on the sheild.

Although I actually like the shine on the shield, don't normally but seems to enrich this.

Go urban grey I always find fully yellow vehicles a little garish, adding the grey tones it down without distracting from the colour scheme.

Grey it is! Just as well, I'd make a pigs ear of it if it had to be all yellow, besides a darker shade will help cover up the many imperfections.

I havn't done a great deal, got some more work done on the valkyrie and 2 of the squad I plan to have it carry around.

I also got around to assembling the Cataphractii:

Magnetising the arms to make them interchangeable left me with the problem of what the hell to do with those shoulder plates, after much fiddling I just glued them to the bodies so I can equip them however I want now. I'll buy another set of arms to stick shields on and make an assault cannon.

On my list for this year is 4 zombies, so... 4 zombies (these have been in a box for ... I don't know):

I would be painting these tonight but I don't feel like I could sit down to do soemthing right now.

I'll just quietly leave this here:

Thank you all for your comments,
OMN.

Just a matter of cleaning them properly.

The trick is to spray them with rattle can primer, then "shave" them with a knife blade and a file to smooth parts down, using the primer to mark where you haven't cleaned but leaving the primer in recesses as a filler.
Re-spraying and cleaning until they are smooth enough.

Not sur ehow I feel about the "'eyyyyy!" thing going on here. I'll try and make some sort of wrist mounted console as per the forge world model.

Tried painting that Vindicator IRL this time! So my first time airbrushing yellow in anger.

Despite masking to hell and back I still managed to get a bit of over-spray some how. There are also some parts where I used too much liquid mask when protecting the yellow on the recesses when spaying the black, so I need to touch that up as well.
Nothing that can't be touched up and fixed with a brush, then onwards to details, edge highlighting before weathering.

Shapeways has just released a new printing material which has a better, smoother finish as well as needing less cleaning, so I need to check how much of my current range is compatible.

Thanks everyone,

Don't you just hate overspray don't matter how hard you try it still manages to bleed through, worked out quite well thought the scheme although I think you could do with breaking the grey up a little with maybe some black hatches or something.

So they have a new material any idea as to what it is ? Also I know you have mentioned it before but how do you do your clean up of the prints ?

Here you go LDD:
_______________________________________
How to clean Shapeways detail prints:

1. Wash in Warm water with washing up liquid. Scrub with an old toothbrush, careful not to damage delicate parts but trying to get into as many recesses as possible.
2. Carefully drain and rinse preferably through a fine sieve.
3. When dry, spray with a grey plastic primer
4. Once the primer is dry inspect for rough areas
5. gently file and scrape where areas look rough and where layers are visible.
The reason behind this is to use the primer as a filler to the recesses of layers and highlight areas to be cleaned.
6. Re-apply grey primer
7. repeat steps 4 - 6 as necessary until you are happy.
_____________________________________________ I'll have to see if I can do a proper tutorial with pictures for the tutorials section.

Buy anything exciting?

As to the new material ... It's Acrylate, made using direct light projection onto the liquid resin substrate.

From Shapeways description:
"Printed using DLP technology, the process uses visible spectrum light to cure the liquid resin one layer at a time. A resin bath sits above a high resolution projector which projects cross-sectional images of your model onto the resin above. The resin cures with exposure to light, curing an entire layer with a single pass. The build platform raises and this process is repeated for each layer, slowly building up your model. Support structures are generated to secure your model to the build platform, prevent warping and reinforce overhangs and other complex features. When printing is finished, we remove the models from the build platform and clean them from any residual uncured material left on the models. The models are then post-cured by UV. Once the models are fully cured, they are removed from the oven and the support structures are removed."

The grey is shaded but way too subtly, I should have added a darker shade to recesses etc. I'm hoping to break it up with weathering, oil / rust streaks etc.

Nice vindicator mate the grey and yellow looks very effective.
Overspray always happens
When it comes to shading I used to spray colours like hand painting and graduated to layers finely, more recently I go for maybe three shades tops and use shades quite far apart, once chipped and tinted a bit with oils it looks great !

However that looks good as it is !

Alright, so, here are some bases...

… paint in progress...

… some finished examples (not identical to previously because of making ~ 100 of them...

...and some pics of a space marine that I made for my brother as a consolation prize for DoW III being utter rubbish. So I painted one armed with his favourite weapon; painted in his favourite chapter scheme. The chapter badge and and the numeral on the knee are both sculpted on , it feels silly but i'm happy that I painted the number “6” on the shoulder pad. I found it amusing that this colour scheme is almost a complete invert of my Imperial Fists.

Hell or whatever, may have frozen over around the time that I put paint on this model, I should have opted for darker shades of rust methinks.

Mostly I've been making space marines from the “Burning of Prospero” & “Betrayal at Calth” boxes, but who'd want to see those...

And 8th edition seems … interesting, I await the guard army list with trepidation. I kinda like the big marines but wish I didn't, the plague marine side's models look interesting except for those grinning not-zombie things, not liking the poses. I guess some head swaps might help.
Still semi-free rules is a nice change, will have to pick up one of the rule books at some point, maybe 2 as I'd like to move away from imperial stuff to at least one of the xeno factions.

I'm more excited about the new objective markers https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/878862-.html

With those cranes and some of the other terrain pieces GWS have been putting out some nice terrain recently.

BTW thanks for not getting this thread locked or anything. ... I think you have to say my name 3 times, or maybe 5 facing a mirror, who knows.

I make the bases from scratch. There are a few reasons for this, but it's mostly because I don't want piles of identical bases, I'd rather have the variety with every model looking unique and the freedom to "liven things up" from time to time
... that and hating casting.

Besides it took me months to come up with a look that I was happy with on the bases

It does sound like a lot of work but I like doing it as I think they look acceptable when finished.

Yeah I had to wait for the earth to come back around to pick me up again, plenty of time to paint but now i'm back and having just seen someone put half a tub of citadel basing sand on ebay as "vintage" and "rare" I kinda wish it hadn't.

I've not been doing much 3d stuff only using it to plan cutting plasticard etc. My usual plasticard dealer has gone from charging £1.70-ish to £2.70-ish in the past year for a 1mm sheet, so just planning.

Can't say I really feel up to messing about with pictures of marines so I'll just use words instead.

All I've got is the contents of the Calth and prospero boxed sets plus a few extras, most of the MKIII marines are going into an Imperial fists army and most of the MKIVs are being used to make a small word bearers force.

Both are in the 1k - 1.5k ball park and that's just infantry with the odd contemptor. I've not gotten around to vehicles yet atm that seems the more expensive part .

Initially I'd planned to use veteran squads for the Fists and tacticals as the basis for the Bearers though right now it seems i'm going the other way; the bearers have 2 plasma veteran squads, a contemptor mortis an apothecary and tartaros terminators led by a chaplain and delegatus, with only the HQs painted, the rest is just base painted for now.

For the fists i'm putting the finishing touches to the second tactical squad with those complete i'll have a legal (if not very good) army.

Here is 3 Imperial Fists Tactical marines that I'm working on:

These are just prior to oil washing, usually I'd airbrush the dirt over the lower legs before applying the gloss varnish to seal the paint and protect from the oils, this time however the gloss went on first, hoping to get the oils done tonight.

I didn't plan to paint their face masks black, I just kinda did...

And when they are all done and (MIG) dusted, they should look, roughly, like this:

If anyone is curious here is my Word Bearer's colour scheme as modelled by the force's chaplain and delegatus:

I don't really have a suitable dark background atm should really make something to take better pictures in. At least with it being summer it's light and things dry quickly.

That Red Scorp is tight. If you hadn't shown the green stuff on a plastic pad, I would not have believed you. Fists and Bearers looking solid as well. Bases went from "eh those look ok" pre paint to looking great after!

A little burnt umber oil wash makes them look less like power armoured lemons.

These are ready for a matt varnish layer now, but it's just started raining so maybe tomorrow.

With these finished I think my army is about 1200pts

delegatus
master of signals
vigilator

2* 10 man tactical squads

5 man flamer support squad

5 man missile support squad

5 cataphractii with combi-plasma

Not a particularly scary force I know but it's getting there, once it gets above zone mortalis size I want to get some land speeders and land raiders.

I doubt it LDD, i've seen plenty of people who like the oh so shiny look.
I remember you don't like marines, I have a necron tomb stalker to make if that takes your interest?

Otherwise you'll have to wait until I get around to starting my renegade & heretics army, I have all the models and parts to make a decent sized force.

I still have these to paint after all.

Cheers whalemusic, there is still a fair bit of improvement I need to make with the bases, need to get better at painting asphalt and should add road markings, graffiti and drains etc.

Might make some more red scorpions at some point, just like the colour scheme really, even though in the fluff they are less than likeable.

Wow yes please LDD. means I'll have to buy a tactical squad sooner than planned,

I have a spare razorback and dreadnought around so I could make a small army :(.

Those 3 marines are now done, with the exception of powders, which i'll do when I have enough models to justify doing it.

Right so more bases:

The above are for the bulk of my Word Bearers force. Next stage on these is to add some scratches and more wear to the bronze, maybe upping the verdigris if necessary and multiple heavy washes ... and I missed a few details in the rubble. The washes will bring it all together in a dirty mess.

Since the Fists are now at a state where I have a small legal force, I'll be moving over to get some Bearers up and running next. It's not that my Fists are finished by a long shot, I've got heavy bolter, veteran and breacher squads to put in, let alone my contemptors and other goodies; it's more I'm trying to get these two forces to a playable level together, but playing differently. One a more elite force with the ability to hold ground but with enough mobility and tricks to effectively counter attack. The other more numerous using target saturation to overwhelm the opponent, so basically trying to play to the strengths of the respective legions as described in the fluff as possible.

So to that end the vindicator I showed previously in IF colours will be getting a re-paint and will be joined, eventually, by the 6 hulls that I have left.

The word bearers force currently comprises of:

delegatus & chaplain (pictured previously and already finished)

5 Tartaros
10 veterans w/ 2 plasmaguns
10 veterans w/ 2 plasmaguns
an apothecary
and a contemptor

All of the above (bar apothecary) are airbrush undercoated in a dark metallic red of my own devising, before a slightly brighter metallic red mix will be applied on the upper surfaces prior to an edge highlight and other detailing. I'm airbrushing not so much because its quicker but because I mixed the paints with too much thinner so the paint goes straight up the ferrule, which is a great way ruin a brush.

What does that red undercoat look like? Like this:

If anyone is wondering the reason I have two styles of bases pictured before, both are for my Fists that army is I picture it being split in two in the future, one containing more dedicated ZM friendly units: breachers, flamer support squad etc, where as the other being better suited to open terrain: tacticals support squads. But where both forces can be fielded together and have the same cohesion.

@ Kepora: Nah this legion actually knows what paint is and doesn't get it confused with mud which a certain legion likes to play around in. But then again maybe a certain primarch decided whats the point in wasting resources on paint for cannon fodder, no-doubt it doesn't matter while he is hiding in his mancave.

@ LDD: I like having a lower model count for what feels like a more effective force.

@ Cam: Glad you like it, I'm finding it to be a nerve wracking colour as it seems if I make a mistake anywhere I can't just paint over it (this is where the heavy chipping and oil comes in useful, but don't tell anyone).

now to finish those bases and watch springwatch.

I've updated the word bearer image in the previous image to as it's a better representation of the shade that i'm using.

Also I've finished dirtying up those bases after I've tidied up the rims with black paint I give them a seal with humbrol acrylic matt varnish as the black that I like (Vallejo Model Color 70.950 Black) does seem rub off unfortunately, not useful when you are using it to paint edging over something like white primer, still, blending in a bit of grey and layering seems to stop it.

Thanks, now to get started on the models to go on them.

I forgot to mention, I'm looking for transfers to use to denote the chapter of my Word bearers, I was going to use the Twisted Rune chapter icons that come with the Calth box, but
Spoiler:
They all die. Fighting Ultramarines. kinda puts the end to my idea of a band off somewhere else that end up fighting some Fists.

Since I only have a decal applied to one model painting over it isn't much of a hassle.

I was thinking of some sort of scorpion imagery, just a tail or some such, to fit with the iconography of the red scorpions in the same way that there is a sect of the thousand suns with a similar icon as the blood ravens ( I would have loved to make a small force of these but FW no longer have the transfers ). I was planning to get a sheet of FWs Red Scorpions transfers , but there isn't much there that might be of use and the word bearers sheet is a bit limited.

I would make my own but it would be difficult to make one that will show up on a black background. There is painting, but ... my freehand is a real weakness, more so doing something multiple times, just as I can't draw so I use CAD, I would really rather use transfers and I don't particularly fancy buying an expensive printer just to make them.

So, anyone got any ideas for any transfers that might fit the bill ?

Well I use a daylight bulb whenever I paint & photograph so that might be something.
But my yellow isn't anything special. I use the 3 Vallejo game air yellows over a solid white undercoat zenithal lightest shade, a few thin layers of the middle shade (gold yellow I think) over more or less all of it, then the sun yellow with any deeper shades with a mix of that last one mixed with a smidgen of alien purple.

They all look too bland and bright until I apply the burnt umber wash.

Here is a contemptor airbrushed with just the yellows as above:

I was actually having some trouble with my airbrush at the time that I was trying to finish this off so ended up messing some bits op that I will have to revisit when I get around to painting these

Thanks for all the kind words on the bases, I've ordered another 30 32mm bases to pick up from my flgs in a few days which should give me enough for my various projects. With the new ones I will try and add some more variety to them; they will all be done in the street style but I'll try and add more rubble, steps and some other bits and bobs as I can.
I think I have enough of the ZM style for the time being I do have some that need finishing at some point, when I need them.

The dark mechanicum transfers are probably a bit big (looked them up, knight sized) thanks though.

I “might” just use the plain red ones from the red scorpions, make do with decals from the WB set or just use the ones from the calth box, fluff be damned.

Still a way of needing to use them, I have just got the second red on the first veteran squad and terminator squads, still have the contemptor and 2nd vet squad to go.

You should be just able to make out the shading, the hoods are not stuck down in case you were wondering. The heavy weapon arms are magnetised.
Nice kit, definitely my favourite terminators GW has produced.

No painting atm, too hot, very un-british weather.

Terrain shaped update this time.

Here is that “Roadside Billboard“ from Sarissa's Retro range:

Bigger than I thought it'd be. While glueing the grit on the base with watered down pva I managed to warp it, smart, should've sealed it with something first. But its now sealed with some spray primer before I airbrush some paint on it.

My first bit of laser cut terrain. Might pick some more up judging by how smoothly it went together, I'll have to get one from another uk company called 4ground as well to see how it compares.

Also I've got started on a wrecked tank terrain piece. I didn't want to have a tank in the middle of nowhere and decided to make it look as though its been there a while, long enough to have been used as a piece of hard cover.

btw the tutorial I used to make the ladder can be found here: http://inquisitorczevak.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/making-28mm-wargames-ladders.html

And because the hobby butterfly is on steroids atm, I'm having a bash at finishing this:

I made half the gun the other night, shouldn't take long to finish. Then it can sit for a few more years until I can be bothered to rivet it.

But first I must play with my sector imperialis objectives and the very hard plastic they seem to be made from.

Nice terrain work mate surprised how easily the MDF warped though, the tank wreck terrain looks spot on, have you considered opening the hatch and adding some kind of interior like some one is using it as a base point ?

Well the steroids is working as that looks like a beast, be interesting to see the gun fitted to it nice work.

P.S. I haven't forgot the shoulder pads I just can't find them yet, plus my room is in way more of a mess than I had first figured, I am literally moving stuff in front of one unit to get to the next ( I think I have a problem lol ) but as soon as I do find them they will be posted to you mate

Thanks,

LDD I think that it warped so much because it's thin and the pva was quite watered down.

I did consider having the hatch open but there is not really a rear end to that tank, the top part was a bad miscast, the top hatch was going to have a mg or something with sandbags as well but I thought better of it. I'll still try and get some on it but still. ... Maybe I could fit a little hatch to the side of the ladder, I had planned on putting some containers and other debris around that part, we'll see.

The gun so far:

The plan was to make the lower armoured bit of the gun out of plasticard, however I kind of messed it up so thought it might be easier to simply sculpt & carve it out of milliput instead, I seem to have not added enough to the one side while sculpting so its a bit un-even, I'll get around to trying to fix it later this evening.

Breaking news: I've just had an email that my reaper kickstarter is in en-route, so fingers crossed the Genswick will be getting more arty.

OMN's stuff ... Necrons, stuff. @ 2017/06/29 20:07:04

Post by: lone dirty dog

I thought MDF was designed not to warp or be less likely ? I guess I was wrong again lol

As too the hatch I just thought it could double as a nice diorama scene, with a little opening it could be quite a nice talking point but that's just me trying to get more out of something ha ha

The gun looks a little small to be honest but it might just be the camera angle or I am just used to GW over scaling.

Better check my emails to see if mine is on its way now ......

O yes still looking for the pads, I found the containers I thought they would be in but they are not in there, so now the hunt continues .....

Rivets the tank. Riveting is fun. Mmmmm, rivets. :-)

How do you cut such nice circles in plasticard? My compass cutter struggles, so I usually resort to rough cut and sanding, which looks patchy, or cutting around a template such as a bottle top and snapping the card.

Glad you noticed Oestergaard. I'd hope it's not just the gun that might remind you of the ISU-152 the armoured compartment is meant to resemble it.

 shasolenzabi wrote:

Me too. I'll have to find a suitable poster, probably fallout or otherwise sci-fi / videogame related.

@LDD: The gun is the same size as the vanquisher cannon on my ragnaroks. Really I should make it into a laser weapon, so plenty of greebling, besides the gun is dwarfed by the size of the tank it'self. And yes we are all ruined by GWs scalling.

@Johnny: I probably use the same type of cutter as you. Try not cutting through all in one go, don't press hard, the blade wants to go streight, if you press hard it'll make a mess. Like Duncan always says about painting many thin layers, many thin cuts.

If you are cutting through 0.5mm or thinner plasticard you can just cut from the one side, anything larger and you'll need to score both sides of the plastic. So, press the point of the compass down to make a deep indentation or use a sharp pin, whatever you use you want to make a mark visible from the other side, a raised whitened area. put the centre of the compass there and score the back side as you did the front. So long as the diameters are the same and the centres are lined up you can then just flex the plastic a bit and pop it out. If you've not cut deep enough it wont break, or you'll get un-even tears, too deeply and you'll just have more raised edges to file down (which you'll have and need to dile down anyway) and it takes longer to cut.

Anyway, my circle cutting is far from perfect.

Big books and big guns update.

my two bones / Victorial lamb sledgehammer guns have arrived. seems I was part of the first 100 test run. so far everything looks ok, doesn't look like I'll have problems assembling it, I hope my glue works on it. The figures a bit bendy which I'm hoping will not pose any problems, I'm concerned about paint coming off them when they bend. There are mold lines but the figure plastic is very easy to cut and the gun parts can be cleaned just like ordinary GW plastic parts ( with the bonus that there isn't extreme amounts of fiddly detail to cut around. Nice bonus is that it comes with 6 25mm infantry bases and a big oval base for the gun. Maybe I should have picked up a third but I thought that might be overdoing it ( I do have a gun that I made myself to be the third, however I may just pass it on to my traitor guard army).

Instructions can be found here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1686/8361/files/Sledgehammer_BFG_Instructions.compressed.pdf?11179169620398356096

Along with that I've finally gotten my hands on a 8th ed rulebook to have a flick through and catch up with what they've changed with the backstory. glad to see the rules cut down despite the loss of vehicle facings. Just have to pick up the army books and FWs Guard Index when they've finished editing it.

Tank destroyer with teeth and a wonky nose as it seems I messed up one of the curved pieces that the laminated sheets that form the mantle are stuck to.

I'm really not happy about that, but I guess it'll have to do.

And a sketch of the base for something else to build.

Unfortunatly I can't cut ovals so I'll have to use a template to work from.

Sometime I should really add some anti-air to my Genswick... back to heresy soon ... I hope.

So I've been piecing together my BFGs from the Victoria lamb / reaper kickstarter, they are bug guns for sure, almost regret just getting 2, but the plastic the crew are made from isn't great.

Nearly finished assembling both now, pics will come. They are quite big and cover much of the bases that they come with, so I'll have to work out something to do in that regard.

And here is a completely unrelated base for a large model, but what?

I've also been cleaning up and filling in the other colours on those terminators, still got highlighting the black to look forward too.

From the front the destroyer looks like the top of the gun shield isn't parallel to the top of the hull, no big deal but still.

Thanks all.

The wheels have been sprayed black on the inner facings before gluing them together, there are some joins and dimpling that is going to have to be filled in prior to painting. At least I've got the colour scheme sorted, russian genswick green it is.

And crew:

see how bent that spotting scope is? Doesn't seem like it can be straightened, maybe if I could be bothered to drill a length of brass rod through it I could get it to straighten out but no luck with heat etc. :(

Ha you got your guns then as well, I got three but really only wanted the crew which as you stated are a little wobbly.
Good call on the rod to straighten out the scope but I was thinking of cutting it off and using it as a double spanker gesture

I don't know if it is just me but the guns seem a little plain, mind you one is going to be orkefied.

That base is pretty cool indeed the double level is a great idea, might borrow that format could come in handy for a diorama I have in mind.

If you've tried hot water I'm not sure brass rod would work unless it was sufficiently thick to resist being bent back, how about increasing the bend to look like a bit the vee shaped optics ???

The hot water doesn't work that well, I think it's because it is more rubbery plastic rather than resin.

I think with the rod it is to clamp the scope so it is straight then run the rod through the centre, this way it will restrain the bend from reacquiring.

I agree the guns are kind of plain, at least from a distance, but up close the gun carriage is covered in rivets and what empty space there is is just screaming for weathering. Steal away, I'll get a picture up later thet will show a bit more as to how it's made / the floors are supported.

Well considering it's rare to see any model carrying any extra ammunition ...

I'm a big fan of Victoria Lamb's sculpts which is why I backed these models in the kickstarter, the only problem with the sculpts that I can find is that they really should be wearing ear protection, but that's just me picking holes in everything.

Those guns look excellent, really like the design. As to the crew, afraid can't really help, I would gently add more heat then clamp the thing straight, but you might risk loosing detail or damaging the model. Bearing in mind by more heat I mean being gentle with a blowtorch.

Well, They also have solid steel carriage wheels, which suggests early 20th century tech, trench warfare stuff, so the gun needed to be efficient, not pretty.

Bit more on the big base.

And here is how it's made:

layers of plasticard off cuts to bring the level up.

Well, I tried boiling water, just made it even softer despite holding it straight as it cooled it didn't work. Guess I could try a candle.

Finally got my hands on some of the 8th edition indices, so, not much modelling, but much reading and making of army lists however, think I read a line in the BRB to the effect of it being a hobby in it's own right, lol!

With the changes to guard platoons the brigade detachment is looking a bit small seeing as I could probably fill it up with just infantry, so there may be a bit of rearranging of of squads to do.

I've dug out 3 half made mortar teams to finish off as this edition has made one of the guard's least efficient waste of points usable, just hope I have enough bits lying about that I can cobble together to make a crew from.

The gun carriages are coming along I'm waiting for some filler to dry in some of the shrinkage dimples before, if it works out, I can get them sprayed, leaving half the crew and bases to do, provided I don't get distracted by a couple dozen other things ofc.

@OMN - I've been doing the same, my list-making is a bit weak. I've been collecting Chimera kits for years, I just built them ALL! Just to find out they are much more expensive to use. I still only have 31 regular Lasgun troops painted, and 8 Chimeras painted

What parts are you needing bud?

And 8th appears to be making everyone have a good close look at what they have, don't recall this fuss when 5th, 6th or 7th where about, though I have not played any of those I suppose. Be nice to see an army shot once you have sorted a list out.

Thanks for the offer cam, but i'm good, just a matter of rummaging around my bits box a bit to find what I need, still have plenty of parts left over from my militia and inquisition projects, plus having collected guard for longer than could be called healthy...

I'll see what I can do about an army shot, there isn't a whole lot more to show since the last time I did one, except in time. Will definitely need to clear my desk a good bit to fit it on however.

@dsteingass: Ah so that's where they all came from thought you may have gone on quite a bit of a spending spree. I agree on the chimeras they have taken quite a beating in this edition, working out the points cost of units is going to be tedious.

I'm finding this guide (and the other tactics guides on this site) to be invaluable btw:

Yeah, that middle stack is empty now

2 of the Chimeras were new, a Hobby Shop who got into selling GW when 7th Ed came out, stocked a bunch of kits and a paint rack, and now is selling everything 40% off, including that rack of citadel paint mostly dried up in the pot.

I will never complain about my backlog again. To be fair most of my pile of shame is terrain.

Dried up already? I've still got some of my first paints, they are more a thick gelatinous gunk but like those people who freeze themselves in the hopes that one day medical technology can resurrect them, they are in a biscuit tin likewise awaiting such a day, so I guess sometimes it pays to live in a more humid climate.

Yea so I've totted up the power level and points values, there are a few units that I don't have the costs for as they are in the FW book that I don't own, and I've included a hellhound, devildog and chimera that I haven't made yet (but need to fill slots).
The army comes to about 4700pts at 267 PL points spread over a Brigade, vanguard and spearhead detachments. No flyers or super heavies.

No doubt I've missed things as I'm not yet used to the way equipment in units is calculated and miscounted the number of models that I actually have.

Mortar crew is done, bases were already finished so that saved a lot of time, arty crew is done and the guns are primed.

Yes, I have a problem. But as far as I know, there are no meetings where people sit around, smoke cigarettes, and drink coffee and talk about this particular problem.

Yeah, the new pots are horrendous. Any new I buy, I am transferrign them right into dropper bottles straight away. Great paint, horrible bottles.

That sounds like a great list. I'm not really even that far yet. I'm still counting individual points up

I have the Forge World book, what do you need?

Thought that sort of place was called "Dakka Dakka" but bring your own drinks.

Guess I'll have to avoid the new bottles, shame as I'm still looking for some gold paint that is non-GW and not aweful, guess I could do likewise since i'm sure to have a few empty bottles before long.

The only things that I have that are missing from my list are:

2 sabre platforms with searchlights
3 Cyclops
Destroyer Tank hunter
2 earthshaker carriages
2 heavy mortars
1 quad mortar
vendetta

... half the book basically, so no worries.

I was hoping to pick up a copy of the book before long, but after hearing about some editing issues I thought I'd hold off until at least there is an faq ... or re-print.

Have you tried Vallejo golds amigo?

OMN's stuff ... Necrons, stuff. @ 2017/07/18 12:19:21

Post by: OneManNoodles

Which ones graven?

I've tried the model colour brass, bronze and some of the silvers with mixed success, silvers were ok, but the mica particles are a bit big they seem to dry a bit too quickly and be quite thick out the bottle especially now i've had them for 3 or so years.

I switched to the model air series and the silvers are really nice, but I tried model air gold, which was new at the time, and it was a gloopy, gritty mess, I think this may be an issue that the suspension medium in metallic paints is more volatile maybe, or it was a bad batch.

But anyway I've read that I'm not the only one who has had that problem. So tried the eye wateringly expensive metal colour airbrush paints ... which only has 2 non silver colours: Copper and gold.

I used them both on the mace here.
Spoiler:

The copper is fine for what it does, but the gold is pretty bright and has a greenish tint, this wouldn't be an issue if they mixed well but i'm not having much success with that. The copper is too overpowering and they are really not suited to be mixed together on a wet pallet with a brush, being airbrush paints, and so paint just goes right up the ferrule and as Jones would say "they don't like it up 'em".

Maybe i'm just a picky, or, more likely doing it wrong.

I already sold off my custodian models that I had in the Prospero box as I've simply labelled large areas of gold a no-go area.

Have not tried myself, but hear good things about Army Painter metallic.

I aint no painter so not much use. I generally make sure I have a good base coat under it. If I want bright Yellow gold, I undercoat to a flat yellow, then Gold. And nowadays I always wash gold down with purple. One of the proper lads will get this for you better than I can.

Thanks for the tips Cam, I used to put brown under gold, hadn't thought of using yellow and especially not purple! makes sense tho.

Thanks Meer_Cat.

Been working on my Word Bearers terminators, just finished the black shading and adding the non-red metallics before I can add a few washes and start putting decals on. I forgot about the power weapons ... which might be better painted as plain metal, I would paint them green to match their eye lenses or a blue but I think a plain metal might be better.

Also I thought people may like to see what those mortar team bases look like, so here:

all my latest genswick are ready to paint so hopefully I'll be getting started on those ones the above is finished.

Word Bearer Terminators are progressing nicely. I'm using the decals that came with the betrayal at calth box set and with a sharp blade -and sharper eyes- they are working nicely on these models.

With luck I'll get the decals sealed over and sponge chipping tonight, then I'll be able to get them all sealed with gloss tomorrow, the heavy weapon options are magnetised, because why not. Really like these models, one thing I messed up was sticking the top bit of the armour down, my superglue must be on the way out as i'm getting that white deposit around where it's used, shame as I've still got half the bottle.

Another day, another army. Inquisition this time...

For fun I've been throwing together a bunch of 41 Power Level armies, to try out different factions to see what I can make, so I thought I might try and make a small force from bits, un-used or unfinished models that I already have, the list is highly un-competitive and has virtually no decent ranged firepower apart from a single chimera, but would be fun in a zone mortalis scenario.

the list is something like:

Inquisitor: Inferno pistol & force sword
Primaris Psyker: stave
4 Acolytes: power maul, flamer
6 Acolytes: 4 bolters, 2 plasmaguns
6 Acolytes: BP + power sword, 2 meltaguns, 3 bolters
6 Acolytes: flamer, 2 bolters, meltagun, plasma pistol
4 Death Cult Assassins
3 Arco-flagellants (yay I have to make one more!)
5 Scions: plasma pistol, 2 hot-shot volley guns
chimera: heavy flamer + heavy bolter (party bus)

Models I've gathered so far:

models left to make:

A few bits left to make, and I should have the last bits that I need to finish them soonish, just lots of greenstuff to use after.

It's good fun isn't it!

Thought I'd try thinking up a paint scheme for the troopers in the Inquisition force; since I've had them around fro so long I figured it was a bout time to dream up a set of colours to try painting them up with.

Metallic armour, just to be different. quartered red and bone, both colours that have been used extensively with the existing models. I'm not sure about the sash ... I think if there was a touch of green to the blue it would look better, I was using a colour pallet but seems I messed up, but this is just a test so its a bit rushed. Still I like the red and bone so I think I'll keep that, as for the armour it was either that or a gloss black, but I'm fed up of shading black so much since I already have 2 armies that use a sizeable amount of black shading. The mask, shoes belts etc will probably be done in a brown leather... or maybe black. With a lime green spot colour on lens and wrist screen bits.

Link to the palette that I'm sort of going for: http://paletton.com/#uid=35B0u0kvunZhStBqBsoF0jWQ6eP

I'll try and get the army (apart from the psyker) on matching bases.

After gloss varnishing those terminators I realised I'd forgotten one, crucial, step ... the airbrushing of dirt around the lower leg armour. Damn. Since I'd already started getting oil on them I'll have to wait for that to dry and have been matt varnished to do it. Usually the correct order would be to have finished the decals & sponge weathering, then to apply the dirt layer, seal everything with gloss and then oil over, giving depth to recesses and visible streaks etc. Oh well, see how this goes and try and remember next time.

Thank you all.

Had a bit of a painting session on the inquisitorial group. Usually when I paint models in batches I do much smaller ones than this.

Most of the red is finished, missed some purity seals but I could paint those green. Moving onto the cream clothing & parchments next, then work on the metallics, flesh and blacks. I've also done about half the bases with the others needing assorted rubble sticking on.

Seems the yellow on my greenstuff has developed a "skin" probably because of being stored in a container with the blue part for a year hardly touched.

Airbrush is out of action until I buy a new compressor, so there is a pile of models that will have to remain untouched until I get around to forking out for a new one (which is why I'm painting the above models since their scheme doesn't use it, unlike the 'Fists and 'Bearers).

The shopping list grows...

The assassins are coming along. I'm trying to get them finished first

The rest of the troops are coming along as well. Roughly all of them are at about this level:

I've given the metal surfaces a wash to darken them, I wasn't happy with the way the base layer turned out so I'm hoping that another layer on top of this (sparing the recesses) will make up for that, then I can shade up through the metallics to nice & shiny.

Assassins are done-ish, nearly done with the first 4 bodyguard acolytes.

There is one or two bits on the assassins that I'm not happy with or need to be painted in another colour, but I'll leave that until I'm done with the other models.

I might change the colour on the armour trims, the black isn't highlighted on them as I might paint bronze over it. there are some other bits as well that I'm leaving for the time being until I've picked what to paint them. I might go for a different shade of blue to counter the stone shade, as I've got the green to counter the red. The plasmagun may change to that blue along with some black ribbons that are around the knees of some of the models plus bits I've missed.

Next 5 are on my desk awaiting paint, so I'm getting started on the red scorpions, I've built and undercoated a razorback and dreadnought, there's 10 tactical marines and a drop pod to build next, think I've sorted out what units that I'll be using.

Thanks all.

Thanks graven, I don't think its silly, the bases are the bits that I enjoy most! So much so I'm currently making a batch of 104 more.

@ Big H: well its a bit of both, but 99% the lighting, just silver paint layered in a rubbish approximation of how they would be painted with NMM.

@ Desubot: It's a few layers of various mixes of 4 colours, which are: VMA metallic gungrey & steel, VMC Black and Vallejo metallic medium. The black being applied as light glazes at a few points.

Just spent 2 hours highlighting black on 5 models ... ugh ... not quite done then 6 more after that. Painting these lot to a high quality has kinda gone out the window with the shiny metallic attempt.

Actually got some painting done on the HH armies.

OK so it's only 4 heavy bolters for my Fists and the apothecary for the Word Bearers. But I've been finding the idea of painting such large areas of black a little daunting for a while, until I just sat down for a few evenings and just forced my way through it, actually I complain about black but the white on the apothecary was probably more tedious.

Anyway so these 5 models are at the pre-chipping stage, having just got the decals on them now.

Looking at them now the hands on the heavy bolters really need a bit more paint, they look awful compared to the airbrushed yellow, that said all the yellow looks flat and messy atm.

In addition to the above I've had a bash at making a graviton chainfist for my contemptors...

... I'm planning on making a pair of these to go with all my other contemptor weapons to give me a range of weapons to arm my 3 contemptors two of which are yellow, the other red. All the weapons are magnetised and will be painted black, since it matches both legions. I'd like to get on to finishing painting those 3 after I get the word bearer veteran squad that is on my desk painted up.

BTW: You see those little cylindrical things sticking out of the grav gun bits, well they are cast on the tinyest little bit of flimsy resin, and like nothing more than to break off as soon as you look away, like the one in the bottom of the image. I may just remove them and either pin them back on or make my own with brass rod/tube.

Other than that I'm getting started on the build stage of my small red scorpion force, Its basically:

captain
5 sternguard in drop pod
5 tacticals in razorback
dreadnought
5 assault marines

I've got all of that bar the assault marines but I'll leave those until last, if assembling the drop pod doesn't kill me first. Have to say I do like the new tactical marine box, nice detailing.

Hope you are all well.

Thanks doc, shas.

I wasn't too sure about that chainsaw attachment on the fist but I thought it couldn't have been as bad as FW's one.

Above is 24 marines worth of ammo pouches and bolt pistols + some melee weapons.

I find blue tacking them all on an old paint brush (or 3...) to be the best way of making them look relatively consistent that and I can just paint up batches of them, bag them and take them out as and when needed, sure is tedious though.

I'll be finishing the browns off this evening, touch up the black parts tomorrow and get the metals done, then highlight the black bits, give them a wash and finished.

Decided to expand my number of grey scale paints, there is only so much blending of grey and black one can do before one goes mad.

black grey and German grey are nearly indistinguishable, the german grey does look a little green when applied tho. I'll pick up some lighter greys in future.

I stumbled across this post on a blog where the auther has very usefully tested all the vallejo model colour paints and listed them in triads of matching tonal shades. If you are reading this and use or plan to use vallejo model color paints I really recommend book marking it at the least.
http://napoleonicwargamingadventures.blogspot.co.uk/p/vallejo-triad-charts.html

But the German grey and grey green are the perfect shades for my red scorpions, as the (badly lit) test on the captain below hopefully shows.

I'm aiming to brush paint all the infantry and, when I buy a new compressor, airbrush the vehicles.

Word Bearers are coming along, just have the shoulder pads and guns to highlight the black on before I can move on to decals. I'll try and the highlighting done today.
I tried using the black grey as a lighter shade on the left arm shoulder pad in the bottom right, blkack grey is the darkest shade of grey vallejo makes ... bit too light for my taste so I'll have to mix up a bottle or two of in between shades at some point.

The space marine drop pod looks nice when fully built and painted, unfortunately it isn't quite so nice to actually build as I'm finding out. I've just finished filling the joins in the two halves of the doors.

I'm following this guide to assembling the pain:
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/definitive-guide-to-building-and.html

I'll try magnetising the doors in a similar fashion to that shown.

Cheers all.

@Big H: Cheers mate, I can only imagine how hellish that was, you did a good job on them tho. Its probably the only reason I don't buy second hand assembled models.

You're work here is phenomenal! Great work scratchbuilding, weathering and basing! Now you have my envy. For you to comment on my thread is now an even bigger compliment. Subbed for more.

Very nice! Inheartily recommend also Ghost Grey, Wolf Grey (game color) and black Patina (model colour); I use them all the time. Green black ink may be a worthwhile investment also?

Thanks for the tips graven, I'll put them on my never shrinking list of paints to pick up

I've prefer using Vallejo's Glaze medium for washes rather than inks these days, that said I still have a few pots of of old GWs washes that I use occasionally as I like their transparency, I'll look into it, if you say its worth it maybe I'll pick some up.

Progress on the word bearer decals, fingers crossed i'll get the rest of these finished tonight:

Assault cannons for the razorback done and decided to add a stormbolter as this is a really small army and any extra firepower is welcome, I wanted a stormbolter of a lower profile than the default one and managed to come up with a design that would fit the spare that I have lying around from the dreadnought that is in the list. The driver's hatch is from the chaos vehicle sprue just with the top filled in with milliput and carved to shape, I "might" have to lower the hatch as I feel it sticks out way too much above the hull.

Figured out how to paint yellow with a brush that i'm happy with; using a base of VMC Khaki Grey, with multiple layers mixing to VGC Sun Yellow then some VGC Moon Yellow adding white for edge highlights. It still wants a Sephia wash and maybe something darker on the chest eagle where I messed up.

Cheers all.

That is lovely and vibrant. I tend to start with vgc yellow ochre myself but I admire that variant quite a lot!

I have a rebirth batman to do soon so may try that on the chest bat trim.

Very nice Marines! My comp was out for a week, so you can see some of those parts I ordered from you being used at last OMN!

Red Scorpion captain is nearly finished.

I messed up the heat discolouration so will try that again, there a few other bits and bobs that I've missed or made errors on, the gold is VMA Gold painted over with Vallejo metal colour gold then with a sepia wash, its a bit naff as I rushed the gold layer.

Also here is one of my gun crews designed by Victoria lamb, they were not as bad to paint as I feared.

Right so the end (of the year) is nigh, so I'm going to set my self a small list of painting goals to achieve and they are:

HH Word bearers:
- 2nd veteran squad (10) (This will bring up the force to 1k points finishing the ZM size force)

Red scorpions
- Captain (seen above)
- 4 Tacticals ( 1 already painted)
- 5 Sterguard
- drop pod
- Dreadnought
- Razorback
- 5 Assault marines
- including bases for the infantry above

Genswick:
- 2nd Gun crew

Imperial fists:
- Alexis Polux !!!

The last of which I'm very much looking forward to painting since I've had him a while now.

@Graven: I'm just using what I have to hand, probably would have taken less time to paint if I had yellow ochre .

Cheers all,

That captain is looking Bad-Ass!

Lol story of my life. I have VJ metals sitting in unopened tubs, how do you find them?

Well as a disclaimer I only own two of the range, Copper and Gold, partly down to cost. Colour wise the copper is a nice red, the gold is slightly greenish, they don't really mix together particularly well unfortunately. A problem I don't imagine the other colours in range have since they are all silvery.

They both have good coverage with a high density of very fine particle size and so apply nice and smoothly so it only takes, maybe, 2 layers to cover an area, with a nice, solid finish.

BUT they are intended as airbrush paints and you really have to mix them very thoroughly before use. I've only used them with a brush so far and since they have such a low viscosity.
I've managed to destroy one brush using them so far thanks to capillary action. So it might be worth investing in a sacrificial "Rigger" shaped watercolour brush specifically for these paints, see if that helps.

Thanks shas!

Your painting skills are stunning bud. These marines are just beautiful, really nice scheme and perfectly executed, stunning. The gun crew are pretty special too bud.

I have a pod still mostly on it's sprue, the more i see others work on them the more I think I will just convert it to something else entirely.

Nice to see you live and kicking again, missed you round here.

Good work on all the little plastic people.

I can muck about for ages getting heat discolouration just right when I do it. Keep at it, you have the idea.

Bit of a more random mix this week.

4 more red scorpions ready to go. The metals are a bit lacklustre at the time being, they want a wash or two. The bolters are at weird angles because they are not glued in atm.
I'm not really happy with how the big off-white circle on the sergeants banner has gone, but it'll serve I guess.

[ I just noticed I painted the stripe on the knee pad the wrong way ...]

On to the Sternguard squad next!

In other news; the Drop pod is ready to prime. I don't know how I'll paint it before Christmas. The top & bottom halves are not glued together btw.

I took time out from painting to work on a few bases, even started to make two little bits of scatter terrain.
50 x 25mm
28 x 32mm ... Actually i made 48 but seem to have misplaced the other 20...
11 x 40mm

The bases just need rubble, rubbish, etc scattered on them before they can be primed now.
For the terrain bits I'm thinking of using some wall filler to create smooth areas around the cork bark before gluing mixed grades of sand over the top.

I found my inquisitor for the inquisition force, looking at him now he looks like he has too much stuff on him. I'm also not happy with the legs since they make him lean really far forward.

And lastly here is a pair of dwarves from North Star and Osprey games "Oathmark" I really like these models and hopefully I'm going to have a lot of fun painting them!

@Cam: I think that may be the best use of the kit, I hope I don't have to make more. Thank you.

@DrH: Cheers.

I think the inquisitor looks great! the one thing I would change is to replace the shield on his shoulder with a purity seal, just seems too big.

Thanks supreme overlord, I think I will be doing just that.
I'd have liked to keep the shield, I have an idea to make a model with one held by a servo-arm, being used as a buckler.

I've switched the legs for a pair from the GSC neophyte kit, I'll carve off the cult icon and if/when I mess it up I'll cover it over with a little Inquisitorial icon.
Also adding a backpack, I think I'll remove the mechadendrites, although I almost don't want to as they almost suit the model. The idea is to remove the claw end-effector and replace it with the inferno pistol. I'll also remove the shoulder light and antenna.

Terrain bits done, they were built up with wall filler powder mixed with a bit of pva and water, before sand & grit was added. Then sprayed black then grey to make shading when airbrushing easier....

... And I'm slowly working my way through the next squad of red scorpions a bit at a time.

Thanks all.

For the inquisitor, you could cut off the "forearm" of the servo-arma dn flip it upside-down so the cabling and such are on the underside, then remove the 'claws' and carve it to fit the pistol.

Love the inquisitor - right choice on the GS cult legs - the other ones looked a bit run down and ragged for an inquisitor.
