Hey everyone!

Thanks again for the comments..... & I have to agree with the comments.... when you see the chain with the naked eye... it doesn't shine so much as when you view it in the pictures... I will have a look at griming it up a little...

Oh... another point... and a wee request... As you might know I have taken part in another of the awesome LoER build competitions.... The time for voting for the winner and deciding the champ has come.... There are some awesome entries and some really talented guys out there producing work..... the link below is to the voting page of the comp... Would be cool if you wanted to go and have a look It is a great group to be a part of! ... I am very happy with my entry for this comp... I feel I nailed the brief and produced a nicely detailed and interesting piece... If you agree.. it would be cool if you might head on over and vote.... and take a look at the other cool entries!

Cheers All,

I appreciate it.

Thanks mate! Really appreciate it! I got a wee bottle of "Vallejo French Blue" in a cheap E-Bay lot... its a lovely colour..... wanted to try out and get the same kind of WW1 look.... I have another DKoK I want to paint also.... so going to try the same technique but with slightly less coffee wash and just use the Agrax....

Oh... and got myself a new mobile phone with a much better camera than my tablet I was using previously... so will definetly try and improve my photography skils...

The vj military colours are excellent. English Uniform and Russian Uniform are my go-tos.

In a Galaxy where things take a long long long time to finish!  @ 2015/07/06 10:10:08

Post by: MagosBiff90

Yeah they certainly seem to be pretty awesome..... am a big fan of the WW1 French & German uniform colours... but also think nothing conveys a more militaristic style than a good "tattie sack green" .... the Russian colours are pretty interesting too! so many thing to try and colours to have!

So Next up I have a few wee bits and bobs to be cracking on with..... these are not in any particular order...

1: The next round of the LoER Competitions.... "The Trapdoor" Featuring Greeny Todd the Demon Ork Barbor....
2: The base for my DKoK trooper....
3. Trench/bunker/heavy bolter position..... for E-Bay to raise some funds... sand bags and mud ahoy!
4. My FIRST COMMISION PIECE!!! OR fair trade piece perhaps! Artillery tractor taken from a Leman Russ Tank Hull...
5. Macharius Mk1
6. Hercules Base
7. Big Steamy the steam powered tank...
8. Paint experiment with "Crackle Effect & Typhus Corrosion.......... to be explained more later....

So I think that will just about do it until about XMAS!!!

Looking forward to getting stuck into all of them but first I need a real tidy and clear of my work space.. its true but the smaller the workspace.. the less it takes to make it look messy!

Cheers All,

And I think I might have cracked a good spot to take my pics of my models now...

Just heading out but will try and full update later...

Mate, thanks for the comments, certainly would love more DKoK but got a few wee things to do before that... just wanted to try my hand at painting an actual mini!

And yes indeed... I have been using black coffee for washes on some of my armour pieces for a while now... built up in layers it gan give a lovely grimy / oily finish.... I didnt try it on my Trooper though... got myself a pot of Agrax Earthshade for this...

Hey all, I hope all is good,

Sitting here watching T in the Park and thanking the emperor that I didn't buy a ticket again.... I started bringing together a couple of new troopers to try out my painting on! Thanks to the generosity of some Dakkadakka brothers I have a handy wee stash of parts mow... Anyway... I am pretty happy with how these 2 came out... One sergeant and one spotter/sniper... Sent out of the forward position to recon.... Added a couple of bits and bobs and have some gaps to fill before paint but IMHO they are good! Love to hear you thoughts on their stances.etc... Cheers

Hey all,

Hope all is well,

Slight change to our cheduled modelling and viewing schedule.... mostly because my RL job has been battering my brain and all I am good for in the evenings is a small amount of painting and perhaps some greenstuff tom foolery! Anyhoo.. This lovely fellow arrived yesterday from a VERY cheap E-Bay buy... and I have to say... I am by no means a greenskin fan.. but this is a fun and cool looking model... I had a go at starting to paint... but the primer that was on it was a bit thin so I am going to give it a full coat of primer and start over... but I am going to take the chance to try out some greenstuff sculpting... a nice hat deserving of a warboss.. and perhaps a cigar etc...... heck... if I feel brave I might even add a nice coat or something... and add a nice scenic base for his orkship! Oh... and some "WAR TIME EPAULETTES!!!!"

Anyone have any other thoghts on how to convert / amend? Might add a big choppa and some chains... but I don't want to completely drown the original model.... plus.. I do need to paint it... and I am V novice... lol

Cheers All,

that model could do with so much converting...hmmm... i dont like the shoes...the banner (i hate that stuff on all models....) and when you want to redo him and add a top hat and a cigar... why not do a tuxedo ork gentleman...with a cane, shiny shoes, and a white scarf?

as they say... the best laid plans of mice & men..... managed only a small amount of sculpting tonight.... got a first ever attempt at sculpting a hat... which I am 90% happy with... the base lip might be a bit thick but I reckon thats ok... also added him a wee cigar... I think it mostly looks like a cigar... although it also kind of looks like he has bitter off a SM commanders nether region and is chewimg on it.... oh dear. ?.. love to hear your comments

that 'cigar' is bigger than a babies' arm...but then, orks are kind of known for going a bit overboard.

to keep with the there you have started to establish, how about a bandolier?

that cigar i think looks like a hefty puff...but i think it will work once painted...but you shoveled your own grave with that...as you need to have OSL then for that big ash and glow region of that monster
the hat looks good...hints a bit of these old WWII american peaked caps that have that crunched feel to them...the peak of the hat could do with slimming tho..looks too fleshy currently...

about the nether regions of any space marine...these could be better and more accurately compared to a jalapenos ...and a small one atthat...

I think I have to agree with you mate.... will have a go at trimming it down ...

haha.. quite true... they are not know for their restraint... but I think slightly smaller will be better! ... bandolier is a good idea.. I will certainly have a look at that... also want to try and have a go at either a cloak... or some kind og great jacket or something......

yeh tht was the look I was going for... kind of WW2 American bomber pilot hat... the good thing about the sculpy is that I can work and rework it and it wont set ....

so the general consensus is that the hat is nearly there.. just a thinner peak perhaps.... and then a smaller cigar.... lol..... some kind of jacket & bandolier idea.. perhaps with some mode dakka.... and I want to give him some more cables etc.... perhaps from his head piece heading down beneath the jacket..... just need to remember I got this as a painting challenge.... lol.... don't want to make it too much more tricky than it already is!

Going to set the sculpy tonight and try and get a primer coat on him..... then "Da Komanda" will be ready for paint!

Also going to try and get a base coat on Sgt Graven and hit motley crew!

However I have a pretty mad amount of work going on in RL over the next 4-5 weeks so will try and squeeze in what I can!

HHHmmmm..... that's a good point actually.... And we all know what happened last time I treated a model like a cake and put it in the oven..... RIP wee steamer!

Maybe I will have to be brave and try and recreate the details in greenstuff!

hmm... well if you want to use another road to doom... well you could set the sculpy maybe with super glue?...that might work... but you would have to find a good way to apply it to the model... an old brush maybe? but quickness n the deed is of the essence then...

If you are going to be removing them to replace with GS versions, try and do it carefully and if they come off intact you can put them in the oven and then glue to the model after.

That might be an option.... one thing I have learned from "uncured" sculpy... is that it never really takes paint very well and ends up very shiny..... Think I might try and use a hairdryer..... and see if I can set the sculpy that way........ risky... but will try

i doubt that a mere hair dryer will suffice for that task... the sculpy in my opinion needs a stronger heat than the mere degrees that you get when you dry your hair...?

i think the doc has it, if possible get the stuff off an then back it...

Real quick drop in to say I am putting my Mk1 Macharius up on E-Bay, Is only part finished but the turret & hull are done... and the track units nearly there... will allow someone to finish them off and put their own stamp on them.

Simply don't have enough time to finish it and it seems a shame to sit on my desk...

Hey everyone! I hope all is well,

What a mad week but finaly got some time to finish Sgt Graven, MC von Domm & the sniper known simply as Cam!
Made a nice simple base for them and painted it in pretty drab mud colours.... As the squad are advancing over no mans land towards the enemy.
The troopers themselves are. In basic grey uniform as you will see.... Really happy with the posing and dynamic of this finished piece! Really think it gives off a good effect...

Learning a lot painting figures... Ad still a lot more to go... Bur all good! Cheers all,

Hey, thanks mate! I appreciate it! Yeh I really like being able to add some dynamism and a bit of visual interest...

Next up I intend to finish the "Big Steamer" ....... by the end of this week... famous last words!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In the words of someone whom I have forgotten and possibly didn't even exist in the first place..... "The time has come to get some proper done!"

Unbelievable as it is for me.... I have had over 50k views and nearly 1000 replies to my wee blog of scratchbuilt / kitbashed & pieced together bits and bobs! really unbelievable... also nearly 2 years (or maybe more than) since my first post here... I am thinking of planning something big...

Spoiler:
How about a MB version of the Primus Redoubt? I have to admit I have a real keen interest in fortifications.. and after turning my hand to a few smaller terrain pieces I feel like this could be a really cool thing to do! Thinking of something in the region of about 600X600mm Redoubt in the centre.... huge gun battery on top..... trench sections to the side... damage... mud.... all the good stuff....

I have a couple of wee bits and bobs to finish first that I will get onto tonight.... but with the way my RL workload is going.. I think its going to be better to have one main project to work on .... will also allow me to plan out and draw up a 3d model of my intended plans.... Lots of updated.. and lots of input from you regarding the look and feel of the piece / weapon load out etc... should be a lot of fun! anyway.... I will try and nail down a few details and have a first wee update on this tonight.....

Anyways..... cheers all! MB

Hey all, Hope all's good,

Cannot get my head into RL work at all today so I thought I would sit and blether on here.... as usual,

So, after starting this blog as an outlet from RL and to have some fun at trying to build and create some of the really cool models from the 40k etc. universe..... I find myself becoming more and more keen to actually pick a faction or game to have a go and actually play a game.... However I am really not sure on what game to go for?? Looking for some advice,

I am looking to begin to start a faction... so I can have a consistent little group of models to tinker with and use if able... instead of the mix mash bits and bobs I have currently....

I have come down to a few options... and would love to hear your comments if you have any experience with the games etc or the models....

1 Warhammer 40k : The obvious choice, as is so popular.... DKoK (obviously because I love mud and grime) or perhaps even a renegade Guard force!?
2 Dust Tactics / Warfare : Great Aesthetic to the models and a lovely story / background IMHO .... Axis Faction... again because of the awesome models
3 Star Wars Imperial Assault : Masive fan of the whole franchise and the game itself looks quite cool. Easy to pick up and quick. Imperial Faction (Clone Wars Era?) MAndalorian faction.... lots of scope for conversions etc...
4 Star Wars Armada : Having played a lot of Star Wars empire @ War (Republic @ War) for the Pc.... I really like the idea of the space battles etc.... again... Either Imperial or Republic Faction...

I only think of it now as it is my BDay in September and was thinking of getting my hands on one of the starter sets to give me a kick start....

Would love to hear any thoughts or comments if you have them! Cheers All!

PS.... I am leaning more towards Imperial Assault.. but going for a heavily converted & Modified Imperial Force.... but then again.... who knows.... lol..... Help!

mate... your sitting between a rock and a hard place with these options... what i can distil from your choices is that you don“t want super powered fighters but your average GI joe...the landser or the guardsman...people how fight in the fore...heroes by deed and not by engineered nature... but all the systems ...from my limited perspective (i only model and paint...no play sadly...) are of the same ilk...i see many cool aspects of the DKoK of couorse... even a heretic army i could see in my own near future from me... and dust is really cool looking too...and mind you... coming from a german it is always sounding fshy... but the german WWII troops had simply the stunning looks...what came close was the british officer look back then... but only as a snotty second... so dust tactics is a very aestetical choice... as is DKOK...but for my own taste these models are too frail...i know where i am with my GW guardsmen thus...clumpy men for me^^...

Can you play some games first - borrowed models or Vassal or something? That might help narrow it down (as, realistically, you're probably going to find yourself dabbling in one or two additional games). I started playing the game (40k), picking an army (Eldar), finding I couldn't really build for that army and so I build for an army I don't really play (Orks and some Space Wolves), and then starting the whole thread again with X-wing.

Haha... cheers Vik, Yeh I am in a bit of a pickle.... I think honestly I want a small group of bad ass looking models that I can have scope to convert and modify... if I am really honest I don't know how much gaming I would ever really do... Hmmm... I am thinking cost too, the DKoK are fairly high in price, whereas I have seen a lot od Dust on Ebay for reasonable prices..... The star Wars Imperial Assault looks cool.. and I like the fact it is quite a new game so I would be able to get in there fairly early.... and with the vast histories.. there is a lot of scope for conversions etc...... HHHmmmm....

Hey mate, thanks for the info! Yeh I think your right.... I think potentially I am going to to with a group I like the look of first.... and try and get something together and then from there see if I can do some gaming.... the thing for me is the ability to have a cool looking army / group that I can tinker with..... I think initially it will be Dust Tactics (AXIS) and then perhaps some Imperial Assault... haha... doesn't narrow it down at all!

cheers!

Hey again bud,

To be honest, there is no real secret or method I follow. I use instant coffee, in varying strengths, More coffee less water means a much thicker and darker "crude oil" wash...... but more water and less coffee will give a good coverage and a lighter coat.... the one important thing is MAKE SURE THE MODEL IS SEALED!!! I have made the unfortunate error of dumping a load of wet coffee onto unsealed cardboard before and it was a disaster!! It is also a nice effect if you cover your model in your wash.... and then you can sprinkle some of the dry coffee granules over areas of extreme grime/wear... they can add some really nice patches of grime... then once dried.. you simple rub the granules off and you are left with a really nice pattern. Also, another point is.. if you go for multiple coats..... they all blend into one.... even if you let the previous coat dry... the next application will effect the first one... ti can be quite nice... but if you add too much over an existing coat.. it will simply wash out so you will be left with the same as you started with!

Ermmm..... I think that's about it..... to be honest it is very much trial and error... it can look great on some models and then on others not so much......

I hope this was helpful mate, any other questions or queries please just let me know and I will try my best to help!

Actually there has been a few people now asking about the coffee wash so hopefully this is helpful!

well... a weeks worth of wood work is waiting for the coffee treatment...i cooked up a brew of coffee...and hot water in a rough 1:7 mix...(honestly i poured coffee in an old honey glass and after a coupla spoons i quite shoveling it in ) then... i had a thought... i added a bit of salt... mebbe this will have an effect.... now the brew is cooling down and we“ll see if this will work...
i was a bit hesitant at first as you said on unvarnished works this might cause havoc...well... it“s only wood, cork, lots of pva, and then i added cheap wall paint (white) mixed with latex paint...my wife recently made canvas...there the latex paint came in... so no actual varnish in the mix... but i hope that my recipe will work nevertheless...cross fingers for me^^

Sounds good Vik! Good luck!

Had about an hour tonight so made use to start another wee diorama... This time we have a lone officer.... Perhaps last of his division... Charging with the company standard for one last glorious charge! Very much WIP but I think it has some legs so to speak... Will be another nice painting challenge for me too so that's all good!

Teas make a nice stains too. Just sayin'.

Chose a game that has minis you like. That said, I have no idea about Star Wars Armada but I hear not so good things about it compared to the X-Wing game. Star Wars Assault, I think the rules are based on the Dust tactics ruleset. Ah, you can download the rules on these pages:
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing/
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-imperial-assault/
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-armada/

Try before you buy. If you want a tabletop skirmish game, the only two I can recommend are Malifaux and Infinity. Not much opportunity for converting minis in these games though. The Infinity rules are free here on this page
http://infinitythegame.com/archive.php . I do not think Malifaux has a free ruleset.

Big Steamer looks nice.

Hey mate thanks very much for the info! Will definitely have a look through that info!

In my head currently I am definitely leaning towards a Dust/Imperial Assault choice.... Axis force for Dust & A heavily modified "Dreamforge" Stormtrooper group for Imp Assault..... to be fair... this choice comes down to Aesthetics mostly... its going to take me long enough to get any kind of grouping together first.. then I will worry about the game play after... if indeed I ever get round to it.

Until then I have a few wee things to do and finish in the W40K universe... Updates tomorrow night.....

cheers yall & thanks for all the comments!

The lost and the damned carry my strongest recommendation as an army in 40k for the avid converter.
Not only does the influence of the warp mean anything is literally possible in your modeling, but you are not restricted to mutated, chaotic models because their forces run the gamut from abominations to regular men that still think they are fighting for right, and everything in between.

Hi mate! Thanks for stopping in and leaving your comments! Sounds like they could be a blast actually! Endless scope for conversion as you say!

However I have gone and blown my whole thought process out of the water by having a wee cheeky purchase of the SSU Red guard Command Squad from EBay....

To be fair... I recon they are cracking looking models... so looking forward to getting them and throwing them into a wee diorama.... But yes I know.... they are not Axis.... I just could not resist!

Ahoy all, hope alls good!

Couple of wee updates I have managed to get done in between the madness of RL!

Firstly, I finally got my Brother Vinni model.... The heavy armoured trooper from Fallout & I have to say that the model is really nice! Clean with no real obvious flaws... And took a coat of primer no problem at all. Got some paint and grime rust on him tonight and so far I am happy with how its going... Still got to add some oils and work on the weapon.... But I will sort that before I base him... Going for a real rust pile of nuts and bolts base.... Some kind of post apocalyptic scene.... Nice to try out some other colours too!

Next up is my awesome ebay buy..... The Dust tactics SSU Heavy Red Command unit... 3 troopers in a kind of egg like weaponised suit.... As you know I am a fan of the Dust Universe and the models themselves are really outstanding! So much crisp detail and lovely designs! I got these models at a steal and so couldn't resist! Going to start the paint job soon....

Final image is of my modest wee work station.... Starting to fill up with paints and pigments.... Parts and bits.... Just thought I would show a pic...

Cheers all,

Howdy all!

Apologies for the lack of content recently..... an inordinate amount of RL work to be done before I head off on holiday on Saturday!!!! TO say "it is needed" is a real understatement!

Anyhoo... really should have done this earlier,

I received my LoER Comp Prize from Dr H earlier in the week... and I have to say... the pic's he took on his blog looked great... but the piece itself "in the flesh" so to speak, is another level!! Lovely paint job... great little details.. and really well thought out and constructed little dio!

I have to admit I am over the moon and have put it on the shelf beside my few wee display pieces .... I think it fits right in!

Really like the idea of leaving the piece as it is... no mini's or anything else.. let it tell its own story...

Thanks all for looking in!

Will hopefully get back to being a bit more productive on here myself in the not to distant future!

Take it easy all!

Ahoy all! Hope all is well!

Been a while but finally managing to get some hobby time planned!

Better way to get back into it than with another awesome LoER competition!

I will fix my banner later so the link is there!

"Got wood" is the title.... and for my entry I am going to try and recreate a medieval style of fortifiction.... starting with a stone fortress wall.. I am going to aim to construct a "hoarding" over the top of the wall. In medieval times they were temporary structures constructed in times of seige or war... so I am going to try and make the structure to be deconstructable..... foam rubble wall core with blockwork outer face... and timber stairs with the timner hoardimg over the top... got a wee diagram I found onlone attached and got some balsa wood and foam to get started! Feels good to have a plan and will get started soon...

Ot a lot to go on but would love to hear your thoughts and comments....
Cheers all...

I love the idea you have for the comp, but have been wondering how you would execute it, because it would be a tall order to do a big wall, and one section would look odd, but I really like the idea of a bunker/small keep/small fort. I can see that working. And if you do it right you could unfold it and use it as a small wall in the corner of a table!

Looking forward to this.

Like the mech, only bit I am not sure about is the head. But its a nice design. Any chance of a scale shot, difficult to say how big it is?

In a Galaxy where things take a long long long time to finish!  @ 2015/10/08 07:30:29

Post by: MagosBiff90

The Cam! Thanks for looking in buddy & for the comments!

I was thinking the same thing actually... so am going for the small keep / bunker idea....

I really like the contrast between new and old..... ruined and complete... so I think I might have a base layer of around 3 - 4 low level walls (Remnants of an ruined old keep / bunker) and then built over the top will be the new timber sections + hoarding! As I attempted to do with "The WALL" competition.. I am planning on making all 4 pieces interchangeable and moveable... so they can be aligned as a straight defensive wall.... or.... can be arranged to form the keep / bunker.... definetly coming together in my head now... but thanks Cam because your comments have helped crystallise the plan!

Yeh I think the Mech is cool & I actually like the face there is no "head" ... just the shoulder mounted sensor array... I have not received mine yet as just ordered it but if you go to the link I had in my previous post.... it will take you to the Dakka page.. and they have a scale shot in there with some infantry.... looks to be approx. the same size as my Dust Tactics walker.....

The hoarding would look pretty cool. Interesting and intriguing. Just put the wall section between 2 towers, or build the hoardings on a tower.

Mech looks like a fun project.

Hey all!

Again..... a long slow process.... but have finally got some time away from work to be able to put some time in on the Mach.

track units are now built..... a little bit of filling to be done but on the whole i am really happy with them. I have added some of the main detail to the right unit but as you will see theres a lot still to be done.

It is great to see the while size of the tank coming together and i have to say... IMHO i think it looks pretty sweet!! But for sure it is suer heavy..... its huge!!

Run out of suerglue at the minute so when i get resuplied i will be adding the remaining details and then having a go at the tracks themselves...... i have seen a couple of ideas i am going to have a crack at!

I hope its recieved well.... but please... all and any comments are welcome.

Also... at the end... i have added a pic of my "bijoux" work station where i have been creating this!

Forgot to mention earlier,

Once all the detailing is done and the model is complete i am going to try and have a first attempt at a paint job.

The fact i am rough edged card and plasticard i am sure means i am going to need to use a decent "sealant" paint and a primer......

I got recommended one in aprevious post (i cant remember offhand) But can anyone recomend a good primer in the UK?!

I heard somewhere that even a Hallfords Fine Car Primer Spray can work well?

Any thoughts would be great.

Cheers,

may i ask how did you transfer all the detail from the printed template on a paper to the plastic card, please?

Glad you went with the rivets

Just a thought, though: those rivets in the turret might look a bit too big? What size are they really (I might be judging sizes wrong anyway from the pics). For me, between .8 and 1.5 mm roundlets do the trick. My two cents anyway, it is your build and looks great anyway.

Cheers.

Hey Littletower You are right i think... when i first put them onto the turret i thought i had made a bit of a mistake ... but as i look at it more and got the upper hull rivetted i think it is actually looking good! The size is the smallest setting on my hole punch.... around 3mm i think.... I realise that at a scale of 1/50 this is going to be 150mm.... but feel it really adds a bit of texture!

Like i mentioned i have rivetted the upper hull now...... slow going as am not getting much time.... but as always would appreciate any comments..... positive or negative....... after all this is my first go so i will learn (and have been learning) every step!

cheers guys!!

you mentioned about able to change setting on you hole punch, can you tell me where can i get one of those? cause the one i have only have one setting. and my i also ask that are those rivets from the plastic card or card board? cause i don't know if my hole punch can do the job on plastic card.....
thanks!!

Well... This evening I only had short time "as usual" I got a little done on my LoER comp piece.... Pics this weekend... But I also did some painting and a small amount of conversion to my Dust Tactics SSU Heavy Red Command unit. As they were an eBay purchase... One of the unit was missing their weapon... So I decided to replace it with a standard and now have a flag bearer... The pilots face looks as though he is shouting and I can imagine him leading the charge into battle... Needed to reposition the arm slightly and then added some imperial aquilas.... First covering of sponge work and coloured the red star.... So far so good... The model comes apart so its easy to paint... Would love to hear your opinions on it.....

Ahoy All,

I hope all is well!! Its a glorious October Monday here in Bonnie Scotland!

Well, after a very patriotic weekend rambling up the local hills overlooking the Wallace Monument & Stirling Castle, watching our lads reach the quarter finals of the rugby world cup.... and sitting down to finally start to read my copy of "Saltire" Scotland's superhero..... I am feeling fairly energised and as such, ready for some hobby related shenanigans!!

Not an update as such... that will come later... but more another "revised" statement of intent for the coming rest of the year. I have slowly and quietly been collecting, acquiring & buying some nice little bits and bobs and now it is time to begin work, converting, painting & crustifying them all!

So... in no particular order..... heres my wee list to do before Xmas!

1. LoER COmp #16 ...... Got wood..... got my plan together & materials gathered, started already!

2. Imperial Artillery Tractor (For BigH) Based on a Leman Russ chassis I am going to create a unit based loosely on the FW version.... but with a fair few tweaks and moderations here & there.. not to mention 2 turrets.... (I think)

3. Dreamforge Eineskern Troopers with stowage & mule models.... Managed to pick up a selection of these cool troops on eBay and came with a load of accessories... really fancy creating a "Star Wars" Clone trooper style unit with them .....

4. Dust Tactics SSU Steel Guard Command unit.... 3 X Armoured walkers... some wee conversion bits to do.. then just want to really push my paintwork on these guys... maybe create a nice wee dio for them to sit on!

The Rest : My Brother Vinni mini that I bought a wee while ago is sitting unloved on my desk.... I took him apart again after his last paint job as I thought I went to far with the rusting.... want to go for a real scavenger style and again a wee dio base.... as well as the partial conversion I did of the imperial officer holding the standard....

That's it! (until I remember I forgot something) .... those are my aims for the end of the year...

Training this evening but once I get home I will very much be getting stuck in!

Cheers all for reading my mewling....

Hey all,

So I managed to make a start on the latest LoER comp last night. Just massing out the main structure of my build....

As mentioned previously... I am going for an old abandoned stone fort / bunker idea... that has hastily and recently been re fortified in timber due to some recent event or threat!

I want the piece to be able to be used either as a stand alone fortification... or as separate sections of wall that can be grouped together.. or separate.

Not a huge amount of work.... but it is a start.. and got a load of different types and shapes and sizes of wood to use so hopefully going to be really visually interesting!

Hopefully get some more done this evening. I want to get the old stone sections done first.... complete and painted.. and then add the timber in sections over the top to really get some contrast between the new and old... we will see if this approach is successful!

Cheers All,

Thanks for the comments gents!!

Graven.... I don't think that's the case... the large billboard / advertisement board idea (if that's what your still going with) could be really cool! loads of scope for hiding places... and definitely an opportunity to add some cool and clever artwork to the piece! the structure itself could certainly have a cool look to it.... I have no doubt it will be a real contender once your done!

haha... thanks Vik.... yeh something like that is the idea.... my previous "LoER Wall" piece was along these lines too but I want to push it to another level with this one!

It arrived today and I have to say... its a lovely wee model... looks really clean straight out of the bag.. a little bit of tidying to do but I am really happy.... and a very reasonable price for the model including postage from Russia!

cant wait to get home and get these together and figure out what I wanna do with them!

Cheers All,

LoER updates later!!

What's the scale on that Walker? It looks really nice right out of the box.

Hey Warboss.... Got some glue on the walker for a scale shot for ya! Got some primer on it and a wee base made up so will get some paint on it tonight.... Cheers

Ps.... The small viewing lens on the top of the body in the centre is a Ramshackle piece... That's the only addition I will be making to a great model! Imho!

That's a nice size. The feet look a little inadequate to carry all that weight, but that would be my only complaint. Looking forward to seeing it painted.

Yo Ho Ho Me hearties!!

Happy new year to all and I hope that old father Geekmas was kind to you all!!

Stating as I mean to go on for 2016 (to reduce workload at home as it has a very negative effect on health & stress levels & increase my hobby time!) here is a little breakdown of my new and updated plans for the next while...

First off... I am going to begin working on a really nice idea for a conversion for Mr BigH Taking a Leman Russ as a base and looking to create an artillery tractor / supply vehicle ..... should be a really cool project and I have a couple of basic ideas floating around for now. I will update this week and bounce some ideas around! Really looking forward to pushing my scratchbuild / converting skills! Really want to do a top notch job on this one for him!

Secondly... the lovely Mrs MagosBiff90 was lovely enough to give me my first Forgeworld model as a surprise for Xmas... I am buzzing to announce that very soon (one of my FAV characters from the HH book series) Lord Commander Eidolon of the Emperors Children (Pre Heresy) will be on my work bench. I have only really checked over all of the parts in the box and I have to say they are incredibly detailed! IMHO its a glorious model and I cant wait to "attempt" to paint him in the full and immaculate regalia of the legion before the heresy!

Third and finally (for now) .... while not really anything to do with wargaming or anything like that, I have for a while now been wanting to try out modelling & painting a "Rat Rod" Style car... So over Christmas I was able to win a really nice modified car model I am going to use as a base ... The rat rod style and paint job will allow me to indulge my love of all things rusty and corroded & I will be using it as a base for trying our some new paint techniques and finishes ets and as such I think it should be ok to post pics etc here ... any thoughts? .... Actually.. now I am thinking a Post Apoc Ratrod Zombie Hunter Mad Max Machine!!!

I have actually already thrown a base coat on the Rat which consisted of a thin coat of Halfords grey primer...... then a light salt layer before sponging a rust red over areas I want to be corroded. then more salt over the red with a final light coat of primer over the red areas... For once I was patient and let the primer & salt fully dry... and then used a kitched scouring pad to really scrub off the salt which left a really nice textured finish & effect.

I actually find that using a little more hairspray... allows some of the salt to liquidise and it has an interesting effect on the paint colour below.... (see the pic of the bonnet (hood) below....

I then went over the whole model with the scouring pad, making sure to rub in a "front to back" direction to produce some nice gentle streaks .... and that's it.... the pics below show the chassis in its current state awaiting metallic chipping and of course some stronger rusting... the eagle eyed of you may also spot the "Mark of the Grandfather" I have added to a heavily corroded area as a wee nod to the plague father of corrosion!

going to organise my work space and set out these 3 projects tonight so hopefuly some more updates later!

Thanks again all an d really do hope all is well with you all!

haha... thanks mate! I added a wee spray of coffee last night using an old toothbrush (again aiming the sprays front to back) and pout a coat of matte varnish on it... so can work on the metalic newer chips and wear tonight... and of course the lovely rust!!

It is a 1/24 replica old school Nissan Gt-R... but it has been modded by a Japanese Garage as far as I can tell.. the packaging is mostly in Japanese anyway. I have added a wee pic below to show you the box it came in!

Hey mate, thanks I appreciate it... Looking to get Eidolon out of the box and cleaned up this weekend... just need to find a nice shade of purple to use as a base coat..... Think I am going to use the Forgeworld Painting guide for Emperors Children... and really try to make it a clean crisp job... maybe a little bit of dust on his cloak and boots but that's it....

cheers for looking in all!!

OMN to the rescue!! Thanks buddy!

Happy New year to you also, I hope you had a good one & thanks for the comment, I added some metallic chipping and some metalic edges using an 8B pencil last night... (very easy and effective) but very easy to get graphite all over the place! Added a "restrained" amount of rust .... will put up some more pics tonight... apart from the internal paintwork I think that's the chassis done so I will start to actually build and detail the frame next!

Hey all! Hope all is good!

I was looking for a bit of advice regarding the cleaning of Forgeworld models.

I started cutting the base parts away from the mould funnels etc and a couple of the pieces were a bit slippery and greasy almost... I have put them in some warm water with some fairy liquid in hope it will clear up. I will leave it over night.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any tips that might be more effective?

Is there a need to spray a primer coat to the resin after it is cleaned? Thats my intention so hopefully its ok!

Thanks all!

In a Galaxy where things take a long long long time to finish!  @ 2016/01/09 23:33:16

Post by: Big H

It's the release agent dude , helps the resin come out the mould. It's basically grease. Use neat washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush and rinse, or lately I use spray oven cleaner which is massive over kill but strips the grease away in no time ! Bare in mind oven cleaner will also strip the grease from your hands and lungs pretty quick too ...!!!

Post by: Januine

I soak them in washing up liquid and warm water for a few hours, scrub with a toothbrush and then repeat. That seems to do it. I dont remove any of the parts from the gates until after all the cleaning is done.....less likely to lose wee bits. I've never used a 'primer'primer per se but many folk swear by it. ONce dried, trimmed and cleaned I just spray with GW Chaos black spray and never had any probs so far

Thanks for the info guys! Really appreciated. I took ur advice and it seems to have worked! Got a base coat of paint on the base now and all seems fine! Will get some proper updates later.

On other things.... I have made a start on the LoER comp..... "Re cycle of life..."

Going to use that plentiful and mostly overlooked material of sprue to create a junkyard speeder rat rod buggy thing...... lol.....

Put the chassis together tomight and part pf a rig for the axles etc also.... have an idea of using old deoderant canlids as the main passenger section......

Not much to pass judgement on at the mo.... but more soon! Cheers all!

Ahoy all! I hope all is well!

Long time no see! Had a mad time of it over the last while including new job... new house...and... come the end of January 2017... a new family member... still getting used to the idea of being Daddy Biff! lol....

Anyways... throughout all of the upheaval and changeover.... I have collated my remaining models & bits.... Unfortunately I couldn't / didn't keep it all but have kept some key bits and bobs I really wanted...

As you will see, there's not a huge amount but I think some cool pieces and I have some ideas on putting them into some wee diorama's...

Going to aim to do bits when I can ... but hopefully can get some meaningful progress going....

Good to be back and hope alls going good!

Much obliged gents!! Thanks for the warm welcomes back!

haha and yes, once little magos arrived I suspect time will become much more precious! But.. I cant wait!

So... to start... I am going back to finish a little piece I started before my break. A modified Dust Tactics Steel Guard Command Squad unit..... "Gregor Bahnerman" ... As previous.. I have replaced the weapon with an imperial banner "battle damaged" ofcourse!

The base is a recycled piece from my Lothar Walker than I am going to rebase and work later..... I have added some extra detail to try to convey Bahnerman charging through a battlefield and through an enemy line, banner held high.. leading an army of unseen troopers behind him...

That's the idea anyway.... Still need to finalise the pose and glue in place.... but... a nice and quick wee start!

Hope you guys like the idea and would love ot hear some thoughts on possible posing / base detail etc.....

As always... awful photo skills!

Cheers,

Many thanks gents!

Wee mini steps forward but I have finally managed to get a final pose I am happy with for Gregor Bahnerman.....

Glued and all the details on him now.... got some details to finish off painting and weather... and then the final hurdle will be the banner.... something quite bright to offset the dirt and dull weathering of the rest of the dio... but with some black smoke stained bolter holes I think would be just the ticket!

Hopefully will have some more updates soon...

Thanks again all for looking in and would love to hea your thoughts on anything you think I should add in.. or the piece overall...

Ta,

Oh..... for Xmas I treated myself to a wee phone upgrade..... so I may finally be able to take some decent and in focus pics of my models..... lol....

Ahoy all,

Hope all is well,

Following another period of having no time to spare for any kind of hobby related shenanigans, I managed to grab an hour last night to myself and decided that I am going to overhaul the 3 Dust tactics Steel Guard Command Units I have... including Gregor Bahnerman, as I just had an urge to paint / weather & damage something.... lol....

Decided that Bahnermann himself will remain in the pre- primed Green..... with red frontal armour and the remaining 2 units will be grey, with the same red frontal armour.

As is my way.... I m going to heavily weather and damage the 2 suits and rebase all 3 onto a new base....

As a wee treat Elnibbus has offered to have a crack at painting the banner that will be the real "pop" element in the dio!

A wee pic below of the current state of the armour.... added chips and some damage but still need to add some oil and a wee bit of dirt but hopefully get onto that tonight.....

Cheers All and hopefully some more updates again soon!

As a follow up to MB's post, I am indeed going to have a crack at the banner but I need a bit of input: for colours, I'm thinking of red as the primary colour, given that the main colour for the rest of the figure is green. What say you, the Dakka community?

Ahoy everyone, I hope all is well!

I have finally managed to squirell myself away for a brief period tonight and was going to crack on and get on with my banner carrier... however... after re - priming him again..... (Sorry Elnibbus) I have decided the scheme will now be red frontal armour as before... but with grey body etc...my thoughts being that mud and rust will show nicely against the grey ....... that's the idea so far....

Anyway...... as I had re-primed the models..... I decided that I would give my old weathering skills a go as it has been a wee while really that I took on a whole piece.....

As my guinea pig I decided to use one of my At-43 Red Blok Kollossus models.... a cracking little unit IMHO! Really nicely designed and an aesthetic I really enjoy!

As they come pre painted... all I was going to add was the weathering... I have added a before and after pic and gave myself 30mins to get the job done! Dictated by my wee daughters next feeding time! lol

IMHO... its come out quite well.... Would love ot hear what you think... as this will be the way I work going forward with my Bannerman conversion!

Many thanks buddy! Trying to restrain myself slightly from going from the "battered & decayed to within an inch of its life" look!! Pretty happy with how it has come out!

Unfortunately baby Biff is suffering pretty badly with colic at the mo and as such my limited model time has been reduced further (being at work after going "straight through crew" last night is not a great experience!... but I intend to do something hobby related tonight.... hopefully weather the remaining to Kolossus to the same level and then look to do something with the bases!

As you can guess by the total lack of updates, I have managed to get smeg all done recently due to RL and baby W and work..... jeezzz... why cant the world just lt me have some hobby time!!
