Here are some progress shots of Whaley's GSC scheme obviously still more to do but not heaps as they came together pretty well and I like the look personally! I'll highlight the cloth and shade down the armour a bit more and do the pouches etc, hope they're coming along o.k

Finished up the GSC, they look pretty good with my grimy photo style too, sort of slinking around in the gloom! a nice decent tabletop job for Whaley again makes me a happy man! I don't know why I enjoy painting his models but I do, I can do them with different attempts at things and mostly they turn out o.k !

I am so happy with how these guys look! I now finally have a gang for Necromunda! and they look how I wanted them too, creepy, a little mentally unstable and raggedly uncaring. I am not sure about the way to paint them yet really grotty and filthy with muted colours? or bright and fresh and then dirty them up a little? or a bit of both? mainly they;ll be simple dirty creams and leather with pops of colour on the puffy sleeves and ribbons, feathers, makeup etc

I finished my Cawdor Clowns gang! 'The Nightbreed' are ready to slink and caper in the oily shadows of the hive I am really happy with them, the conversions worked out and suit them and the theme well! heaps of personality in this lot I even did the middle tabard on them all to be flayed skin just for the creepy factor.

Haven't checked in for a while, and scrolling through Tau, Abby, the GSC, the Cawdor gang is just fantastic. Consistently brilliant and applied to quite a wide-range of models.

The gang is amazingly realized. Better than I imagined as a concept, and I had high expectations going in.

Thanks so much guys, as soon as I saw the Cawdor I saw twisted Clowns, the ragged clothes and the sort of hunched spindly limbs sold it for me :-)

A couple of people have asked if I used contrast paints on them and the answer is no, I have not used them nor have I even tried them at this stage as I can't see a huge benefit for my style of painting, but that may change in the future when I try it.

I've got a couple of small commissions arrive today, some more Tau, 9 stealth suits and a broadside and riptide, and also some LoTR models which i've not painted before with 8 horses and some foot soldiers and characters.

As an avowed Bat-fan, loving your Cawdor!

I was looking at the Cawdor models earlier today, wondering how to make them more visually interesting, rather than just dull with a contrast colour, and this is exactly what they need.

I love the really strong highlights on your Tau.

I am strong believer that everyone needs to find their own unique painting style, but you have so much of what I wish I could incorporate into mine.

Those killer clowns look absolutely brutal! Very original idea and well-executed. That’s how you make your mark!

Now this is what i'm working on, a bloke who may (or may not) have done something wrong i'm painting Magnus for the same guy I did Mortarion for so I want to do a pretty good job on him, originally I started by painting the front face of the wings with blues and painted the feathers like lightning on power swords but I couldn't get it how I was happy with it so I completely re painted them in yellows as I felt more comfortable with how I could do it.

I'll be finishing the wings up first and then moving on to the next bit.

Whoah!! What a cool model to paint! MAGNUS IS FINISHED and I bloody enjoyed painting the big guy, so many options to add colour where it shouldn't be and just go a little crazy with free will I wanted to begin to push myself again as I felt a little stagnant but I'm really pleased with how he turned out and hope the guy I painted him for likes him as much as I do!

I could go on for paragraphs about blending and techniques/colours etc but I won't, I just want you to have a look and hopefully he's got enough character and looks like you'd imagine him to be

As well as being a magnificent paintjob, the deceptive simplicity of the base really sells the piece as a whole.

Lovely. The highlight for me is that you've got the skin convincingly red, while having it still look like skin.

That purpley red skin is great. Also I didn’t realize the kit could be done without the chest armor.

scrolling quick through the pics he looked really top heavy until I realized that it was two seperate pics (a top and then a bottom with two different angles)

I gave myself a challenge, I wanted to see if I could paint my latest commission in a week? I was pretty close all this took me 9 days not 7 I must be losing my touch!

So much fun to paint though! 2 GSC Knights, a minotaurs predator and terminator squad as well as a few Tac guys and some snipers, followed by 4 'Dwarfs" and a bunch of D&D models

The D&D models I really enjoy painting, some sculpts are good some are not great but the variety is just awesome! The Dwarf models are for different level ups for D&D and are from the AoS air dwarfs I wasn't sure how to do them but am happy with them and I know I say it a lot but the photo's don't do them justice so much better in person.

I have been talking with a few guys one of which is our ever present Whalemusic about a new idea I've got! and yes, it's sort of old school Nerdy in it's ideas, hark back to the glory days of the Hel'Sak and endowed Demon prince it's not Slaanesh but I think it'll be better!

As you know I'm a hobby butterfly nowadays I haven't settled on anything that fulfills my needs in the hobby including conversions, painting and theme yet I find myself loving my Clown gang and wishing it could be bigger well I may have hit my hobby jackpot.
What about a collection of models that can be used as a gang in Necromunda, a Killteam and a 40k army? of clowns.....and circus folk!

I want to build a small yet nasty playable army of DARK ELDAR but create my own versions of twisted carnival folk and creatures to represent the units needed. I have a few ideas for different ones but some need fleshing out and models found to convert and use.

Troops: Killer clowns (more necromunda clowns like i've got)

Archon, Ringmaster (need to find models to use)

Beast master (old style hunter with pith helmet? need to find model and parts, also maybe use puppetswar barghesi? as beasts)

Grotesques, a squad of Circus strongmen with bionic enhancement converted from Nurgle rotters bloodbowl team

Wyches, Acrobats and contortionists made from Harlequins and Elf bloodbowl team

Mandrakes? what could I use as mandrakes?

Talos, was thinking maybe semi mechanical altered circus animals or at least animal head (lion, tiger, elephant) on robotic body, still need to find models to use?

So that's so far, i'm open to suggestions and if you've got any bits or old plastic you'd sell me please let me know! especially if it's something I can use for Talos and the HQ what do you think?

Sounds great . I forget the games name but there’s a post apocalyptic skirmish game which has a crazy Russian clown gang. Might want to look into that. Has a big bear, fire breather, ringmaster etc.

Finally some action, not paint action but stupid idea Damo style conversion action

The Dark Eldar/Dark Carnival now has a squad of heavy hitters, I built these guys over the last couple of days, still a little more fine tuning to go but certainly entertaining enough for here! these are my 'Grotesques' enhanced circus performers injected with growth stimms and implants, originally I was going to make them readily identifiable as strong men but as they progressed they morphed slightly into a little more horror vibe still strong men though! I like the slightly skewed proportions it makes them a little more weird and wrong and also looks a little like a few of the Blanchitsu style models i've seen around. As for paint, i'm looking forward to doing them, lots of discolored skin and I get a chance to try a slightly transparent singlet on one or two of them, should look gooood!

I also got a bit done on my HQ (Archon or Heamonculus not sure which one to use him as?) So this is the Ringmaster to lead my army of giggling loons. I need to find something for his left hand but i'm not sure what yet? he will also have a top hat once the bit arrives for me to use

That's brilliantly horrible. He needs something chair-like - even if that's a four-barrelled gun.

I was thinking of having his top hat in his hand? I can stick a gun to his back at his waist to show he has one? the original idea was to convert inquisitor greyfax hat into a tophat and trim his head to have him wearing it? I could angle it back slightly to make his face still a focal point?

I think the top hat in hand is the superior pose. But if you want a good list I’d make him as wysiwyg as you can for what he will be. Whip is an agonized for sure.

How about a ring. Seriously though you could make a flaming ring or just a flaming hand to show psychic abilities. The ring could be a disc and then cut a demon in half and have it coming through the ring like he is summoning it.

Thanks guys, I have changed the last Grotesque's head now as that one wasn't working for me, he's now got a head from an Iron hands model and I've added a cable from his mouthpiece snaking down into a leather sack containing god knows what! :-) I'll play around more with Ringy when his hat comes.

I also got a Necromunda gang to paint up with pumpkin heads and he want them to have charred skin and molten hands so that's going to look interesting!

One last thing, the Grotesque with the 'coveralls' on i'm torn between making them filthy clown-esque outfit or painting them up in a slightly different skin tone so it looks like it's made of flesh and skin? but that might be too much away from the theme even though it would look siiiiiick!

I think regular coveralls, whilst it would look good as skin it might be a distraction.

I got a little gang to paint and have whipped them up yesterday and today and here they are all done! this is a horror/halloween themed Goliath gang that all have pumpkins for heads! I like to think of them as a gang of biomass protein farmers from the stinking wet chambers where they recycle bodies and biomass to feed the hive, they're a little deranged and don't like trespassers so are very quick to tell other gangs to 'get off their lawn' so i've painted them as if they have faded denim overalls and dark charcoal skin with pumpkin heads (or are they masks? ..... or maybe not!) I really like how they look and can't wait for Korey to come over and have a game against my Clowns!

Man just a few days past Halloween and that still creeps me out. Perfect colors and almost glow to the pumpkins .

I know it’s supposed to be a Sump-croc, but with the coloring and theme it should be a Pump-croc.

Four Carnival Grotesques ready to do some serious damage! makes me want to do another 4 the conversions are based on the Nurgle Bloodbowl team bloaters and I wanted each to be different and disturbing in their own way, and I think I've succeeded because I certainly wouldn't want to see these guys in a dark part of a hive or ship! I am having trouble deciding which one is the most creepy/scary? the running bloody clown makeup is an obvious choice but the big guy nonchalantly wiping blood off his knife onto his belly is pretty close?

I played around with the skin tones as well, trying to get an unhealthy look with bruising and inflamed flesh, I am again happy with the result

They look great, the skin is definitely a standout feature. Those subtle, beautiful greens, blues, yellows and oranges are really exceptional. As usual you wield color in a way that seems magical to us mere mortals. Bravo Nerdy!

Here is my Ringmaster HQ for the Killer Carnival I think he'll be run as a Haemonculus with an agonizer and liquifier now the army is starting to fill out with some cool models so I'm now thinking about what's next? more troops clowns? acrobat wyches? more Grotesques?

The Ringmaster who I named "Barry Tronvasse" was a bit of a leap for my converting skills or lack thereof, I had to drill away a lot of the poxwalker to fit the coat over the torso from the blackstone jainus model and then find appropriate legs and hands and a hat! lots of time but well worth it I say because... he looks cool

That's bloody wonderful! Yeah, acrobat wytches next, methinks.

I painted these two yesterday I gotta say I really am liking the Lord Disco! bloody nice model and almost tempted me to buy one and start a khorne army ......... anyway........ I also painted the lord executioner and they both look suitably Chaos. I have another box of models to do for this army on its way to me, included is the big spider looking demon engine which i'm keen to do for him

Lord Disco and lord Executioner look great, very evil and menacing. The cobweb around the spider’s mouth is a nice touch. Also, the Carnival Grotesques from earlier this week look terrific.

That ring master is next level, great job. I'm guessing it was an exercise in patience, but the end result is really incredible.

More spectacular models nerdy. We are truly blessed to worship at your feet!

No idea yet Theo, I'm not familiar with twisted metal but I had toyed with ideas from old school wooden wild west style things but will probably do a circus 'train' type thing since i've found some ideas on 3d print sites.

A circus train could be insane and epic. I like the idea of doing the wracks like just a bunch of zombie carnies who set up the tents and shovel the chaos elephant dung, etc.

They have a 90mm tall scary clown with assistant that would fit into your assortment, just not sure how

Lots of great stuff here. I Love the pumpkin gangers and the crazy detailed Dark Angels characters.

Loving your work on the clown posse, you've got a real knack for picking the right models for your conversions! And the paintwork is top notch of course. The Dark Angel with the mk3 helmet could have the detailing in his robes picked out in white though.

No, no cheating for me i'm just quite honestly REALLY unlucky rolling dice it's a bit of a 'thing' now and my mates who have played with me are pretty incredulous as to how many 1's I can actually roll. If we turned tables and 1's were 6's i'd be top tier

Last post for the year! i'm glad it's got pics of models! I just painted these 5 Bolter ladies today for a mate and now i've cleraned and dusted and organised my Nerd room ready to smack on into it next year with heaps of cool things and hopefully more updates from me!

The Bolter ladies look splendid! Very atmospheric colours. As Whale Music says, it would be interesting to see them with another background. On the other hand, I think the details show up rather well once you look at the images full-size.

Thanks guys, I have seemed to hit the ground (brush?) running in 2020! I like a challenge and want to see if I can paint 500+ models in the year so far 10 days in i've managed to already get 65 miniatures finished

I had two commissions to do, one was 30 Mordheim models which are all done to a really good tabletop standard mostly except where the sculpts were a little wonky due to the age of them all though some are still really nice sculpts and very characterful even by today's standards, I really am enjoying these models as they're a great mix of bright and muted tones and so many different 'personalities' I believe he still has about 70 more of them for me to paint.

The second lot was for my mate Moods, who is getting me to do his Chaos army which you've seen some of so far. This time was a little mix of basic decent tabletop and then some character style paint jobs this second lot was 35 models, which mostly consisted of a heap of Chaos Cultists which were needed within a two weeks for an escalation league which made me push myself again to finish assembly, prime paint and then get them back to him in the time frame...... but I did it!

Tons of awesome stuff, here on the 13th day of 2020. The Mordheim mass pic is sweet, you very rarely see multiple mobs, and the various dramatis personae standouts, all together like that.

But really I'm all about that not-Iron Warrior noise marine. Delicious.

Wow, Nerdy. Missed your work. It's always so dark yet colourful. The Mordhiem minis are crazy good. The models themselves are so full of character and your painting just brings them to life. The Sisters of Sigmar are standout though. Love the yellow chaos marines too. Don't see enough yellow on chaos marines.

Thanks dudes! not a heap to update today except I finished my Iron Warriors and forgot to take pics before I sold them! I also planned out my next army and i'm just as excited as I usually am when I start an army :-) only thing is with this one, there's no chance of Primaris and i've had two games this year which is the most i've played ever in such a short time and i'm slowly (very slowly) picking it up and enjoying it.

I am totally in love with that guitar playing space marine. Awesome sauce!!!

The first finished models for my new Khorne army I always like to set the tone for what I do and what better way to start than a wonderfully dark and creepy squad of Daemonic Bloodletters frickin' cool Daemons and I think i've nailed a decent mix of warp spawned and reality! the style should look lovely if I decide to add any more to the mix.

I have decided on a smallish and very nasty army this time including a Daemon prince, Bloodletters, Bezerkers, Blood Salughterers, leviathan dreadnought and a whole bunch of nasty nasty Terminators

I also painted a Chaplain for my mate's DA army.

This brings my year to date total to 76 finished models.

Well today there was no painting, but there was ass...... ass-embly. yes I got stuck in to my least favorite part of the hobby :-) and I managed to build 2x predator tanks, a rhino, 10 Chaos terminators and nearly finished 20 Khorne Bezerkers! i'll snap some pics tomorrow.

Thanks also for the compliments on those daemons. I haven't painted anything like that before and just googled a professional version and then dumbed it down :-) it looks damn good though on them hey!

Models for the model god! more models to add to my throne of.... models now makes it up to 92 models this year completed with this little batch of 28 Sisters of Battle I can't hang around right now so I'm just going to dump a bunch of pics for you as proof! these took me 6 days from start to finish a few models I put a bit more effort into or certain parts of them to make them pop, but they are done so I can add to them quickly when he needs it and they still look cool.

There's some beautiful work ton display Damo. Man I love your reds. The paint jobs on the cannoness and penitent engine thingie are really special.

The flaming swords on the Khorne Daemons are wonderful.

I would love to give you details on each model but I'll just give you the basic rundown and then smother you with pics!

I have painted primaris marines, GSC models and a burny ogroid for a mate and I managed to knock out a few models for myself as well! I particularly like the ones I did for my Khorne army,

firstly the ogroid




and the GSC trucks and bikes, the theme was TONKA









and a bunch of Primaris Ultramarines, I only gagged about 7 times painting them






So I did those in about a week and then got into my Khorne! and I'm bloody happy with these guys so far, managed to finish my Daemon prince and Kharn the betrayer.








and Kharn, he's a really nice guy.





So there ya go a little bit more done to go towards my yearly challenge! I think i'm about 118 finished models this year so far.

I love your two big demons Damo. Really amazing work. The skin tone variations of the tats/scars on the Khorne demon are really something.

Like the work on the ogroid, but really like the bull demon. Converted up yourself, or just a well chosen and painted pre-made?

All of it looks great. That GSC colour scheme and the Kharne model are real standouts for me though. Such beautiful yellow on the GSC and Kharnes red armour came out especially nice.

Cheers guys, I haven't painted an avatar yet....YET one day I will i'm sure :-) and snrub you are correct!! I had forgotten about that challenge , it was indeed Ferrus I painted in a day. I haven't got much more right now but I will have shortly, something different for me which I really want to pull out my proper painting pants :-) and I should have 3 blighthaulers that are just a quick table top job to match his other models so they're pretty basic but they look cool. :-)

I finished up my Khorne Chaos Lord, my Khorne Executioner and my Khorne Sorcerer! I think they look pretty good, red's hard to photograph but they're a real mix of very dark and very bright which coupled with the trim gives them a really striking look and still retains the evil majesty they exude! I quite like the flesh cloaks on the lord and executioner, but that's no surprise since I do love me some skin!

Coven of HQs looking awesome, so grim and dark. I appreciate how the new lightning claws give that old plastic terminator lord a bit of a lease on life, but man, check how short that kit is against the new executioner

(No, I'm not sad we didn't get a new terminator lord kit, all the more reason to convert Abby and get some mileage out of a properly epic kit )

I was really really hoping that i'd have a sweet little Bushido box of models to paint already but i'm guessing that shipping is taking a bit more time than normal! SO, what is a guy to do well pretty much he only thing he CAN do in the current climate, and that's PAINT KHORNE!

I painted 3 vehicles all ready for war, two quad Las predators and a rhino transport. I added some small touches such as bloody bone jigsaws in the front recesses and some hooks and chains with a couple of bodies just hanging around.

Filthy nasty. Love them.

Another 10 models down! that's 206 models now! this time it's my very own Khorne terminators I like to call 'The welcoming committee' I am very happy with the look of them even if the pics aren't as detailed as i'd like. they are certainly going to cause a bit of grief to my mates Dark Angels








So next up on the desk is a ten man Havoc squad and a 5 man terminator squad for Mr Moody. these boys will be in his iron warriors style theme (but not actually iron warriors)

More finished. 221 models for the year now. whipped these Havocs and Termies up in a couple of days for Mr Moody, they're part of his chaos army. i've just started more sisters of battle for him, this time it's two penitent engines and 2 immolaters and an exorcist so they should have updates soon too.

Getting close to halfway there now! 226 finished models with the completion of 2 penitent engines and 3 sisters of battle tanks! I really am pleased with how they look, a really nice centerpiece for the army
The details are stupendous and I think these new sisters models are some of the best GW have done in recent times, the designs and aesthetic are top notch and really convey the church of war vibe! I find the scheme being mainly a 3 colour palette works well with the silver, red and gold and looks suitably regal and visually striking.

The Sisters are looking lovely Damo!

I just love the way those turned out Damo! However you did the main body color... it complements the bling (red and gold) perfectly!

Thanks guys, the main body colour is funnily enough a very simple silver, literally black undercoat with a zenithal silver prime and washed with nuln with only generic weathering done in Vallejo bright silver. I didn't want to go all out on it when they had so much else to look at! plus I can easily replicate it across all the vehicles that cross my desk for him :-)

BUSHIDO!!!! (and a little Admech) brings me to 248 models. I did these for Gits! and they are actually really fun to paint once I started I couldn't stop and I really think they worked out well! hope you like them

Ghosts, skeletons, a troll and stormcast. they are being used for a youtube channel so when I find it you can see them being played with! hope you like them, I certainly like them, especially the skellies. He said he's got more work for me so that's great!

My family name is Paul, so I adopted MacPhail as a screen name as more of a transliteration, and because I think it's a great looking tartan, subdued but with a little more complexity than the Blackwatch. Fellas I need some help. I want to make a Killteam and a Necromunda gang but I'm not confident on what to do? I want to make an Ork Killteam and a Catachan one but use a mix of different models from GW, Artel etc? I had even thought of subbing the ArtelW scorpions in as a necro gang

What would be firstly a list of models i'd need to build? for example 5 Ork with stubbers 2 flamers, 1 with knife and pistol. i'm not a real gamer as I've stated many times so this is really for fun and to try and convince my 2 friends to do likewise

any ideas and thought welcome. pics if you got em.

Kill team is really forgiving. Especially if you play with someone who isn’t doing a super meta list. For orks I just use kommandos for the extra movement. Try to sneak around terrain and charge from hidden spots so you don’t get over watched to death. Something like a powerklaw commando nob and sneaky boys would be fine. You could also just run a bunch of Scorpions for a kill team with similar strats.

I know goonhammer has articles on both with sample rosters at the end, but that's more from a competitive perpsective--can't say I've gotten a game in to say either way if they're correct. My guard is definitely built from the "Just shove in all the special weapons" side.

I could tell you... buuuuuut…… you wouldn't believe how easy it is you only need to be organised and know how you're going to attack it. The knights have 3 parts to focus on, under skeleton, armour plates and lenses.

Prime your model with a silver primer and then base coat all other parts (gold with brown, main base colour or armour on plates and lens colour) wash everything with Agrax and let dry, then it's really applying certain wash and paints in areas. Orange in joins and rivets for rust, blues/purples/sepia on metals for aging and oil/heat stains. You can either drybrush lightly silver on the edges or paint scratches etc at this stage. wash all your metals with Nuln oil, they should be dark enough now with some cool effects. You can re apply scratches or strengthen areas if you need to now.
overbrush gold onto the brown parts then mix 50/50 gold silver and go again followed by pure silver on the edges. wash the recesses with nuln oil = gold done. again you can add sepia and purples if you want to add depth or spend more time.
lenses, if you're doing red paint a scab red first then blood red on the lower diagonal half, let it dry and use a watery yellow ( I use Army painter demonic yellow) and paint the lower right edge which you can then pull a little paint to stain the red and 'blend' it in, a white dot top right and you're good.
as for armour, here's where dry brushing and over brushing are your friends! a medium highlight drybrush and a slightly lighter slightly wetter overbrush next, you use a damp brush to blend the highlights together where it's brightest, you can add more steps depending on how light you want it. wash everything with your corresponding washes for the colour and use a highlight colour for weathering scratches.

That's the gist of it and if you know what you're adding next and have paints ready to rock you can get it done in a day.

I also had a small 3 way battle against Imperial fists and Dark angels last week. I lost as per usual but Kharn did run up on a contemptor and beat the gak outta it in one turn before he got shredded by a cannon.

Hi everyone! it's been ages since i've been able to drop in and say hi! but a friend lent me her laptop so I can post up some work i've been doing I have been pretty busy with the brush as I chase my 500 model count and I think i've got pics of nearly everything I painted while I was incommunicado but since I couldn't really check all the shots before the models went to their people some may be missing or a bit gakky
I have a pretty good mix of tabletop stuff and stuff he wanted at a little better character style, so hopefully after so long there's at least something you like!

I also want to just say I hope you guys are doing well as you can be with the world as it is right now I have struggled a bit personally even though i'm on an island but i've been working through the whole thing and it's been a bit confronting at times and exhausting. I have missed the regular Nerds here on Dakka and FB isn't my favorite place to be so even though I haven't been on here a lot I still rely on the connection I enjoy the most

Wow man, awesome batch of minis I want to call stuff out - the hammertime chappy (nice sculpt too!), the 'Cron scheme, the Dark Elf crew, all of those DG boys (holy hell the faces on those sculpts!) - but there's so much, so I'mma just say that your tone control is the real winner here. Love the feel of all of these paint jobs, gritty but with nice rich color. Also there are some Ultras

Thanks Archer, it did take a while! funny thing is I really only have about 5 people I paint for, they just have lots of models

Hey everyone! Happy new year for 2021

I have got a bunch more pics to show you but I'm still waiting on a new laptop charger..... still so I decided to do a little compiling and see how many models I actually got through this year. I was originally aiming for 365 painted models but I managed to do a lot more than that and almost hit my second goal of 500!

from the start of January 2020 until the 27th December I painted by my count 473 models and it was a really interesting mix of things too including large models and lots of warbands and tabletop stuff interspersed with some character jobs and display. Guess who finally got a laptop charger!? this guy! and he's got Van Saar Necromunda gang now spent the last couple of days getting these guys done and i'm pretty happy with the look. I wanted to do them in yellow like the old school hazmat suits you see in the movies, but I did it a little rougher and darker to fit in with Munda a bit better.

Nerdy's back! Awesome. Love your take on van Saar, all very glowy.
