NIce work on all the new stuff damo! Wow i LOVE those bases on the custodes, they are perfect ...I will never paint one of those things though, too much like final fantasy for my aesthetic. Is it fantasy? is it scifi?? Too baroque for me ill take landmates anyday, but!, youve done exactly what they need. Grimy, coppery, marble-y....stellar work there sir,

Last night I wanted to get more of a feel for the Eldar I'm starting, So I went researching and very quickly became overcome with the fact I didn't really understand the fine points and that i'd been there many times before and felt the same thing, I didn't know how to differentiate the weapons and had no idea what the statements on each were telling me, I didn't have the foggiest idea what a 2+3++ is and even how to attempt the equation? my mind fogged over when discussing modifiers and many other essential aspects of the squads and how to use them to your advantage, I read the blurb about the Wraithseer and how they can be great at HQ hunting and very strong, and then I started to read how and I felt stupid, frankly stupid for not understanding what was written, I've got the rules and have done every edition since 4th and I still look at the numbers and feel sick I can't see how they work. I know how I want them to work and I know the models strengths and weaknesses but that doesn't help me, I may as well be putting them on the table and making pew pew noises while I smack them together.
or is there a simple way I can help learn the fundamentals and enjoy both my Minotaurs army and continue with the Eldar?
This is what I do:
Ignore points and min/maxing.
Use Power levels instead and tell anyone who has an issue with it to go feth themselves with a rusty barge pole.
these two points lead to:
Buy and paint whatever you think looks coolest. If it's not "optimal", remind yourself you're playing (when you get to play) for fun and not to WAAC.
When you play, start simple. Use whichever missions you like, but use the "beginner" stratagems from the BRB. There's plenty in that alone to have a fun game without any extra stuff.Have small games for your first couple of "relearning" the rules. I did this with 2 squads +1 hero of Minotaurs vs 2 squads + 1 hero of Iron Warriors - then we swapped sides for the next game. Slowly expand from there. Add a second hero for each side and a dread, then another squad and a vehicle. Don't even worry about adding Psykers and Flyers and Chapter tactics until you're happy enough with the rest of it all.
If you have super-cool models you really want to use but they have complex rules, use them as counts-as other similar stuff for the time being - so use a Spartan as a Land Raider. Use the Wraithseer as a bog-standard Eldar Wraithlord for the time being.

Thanks so much guys, it's great to see a bit more movement on the blog as you may have noticed i'm struggling a bit mentally lately since work has been so busy and I feel i'm losing a bit of myself and my identity because i'm not on here as much with my blog and reading comments and generally just hanging with you guys
But I have to say the strength of your words has helped me no end! and I'll be here if it's once a week or once a month i'm not going anywhere
now, first things first, I am sure i've a rusty barge pole around in the shed somewhere?..........
and second thing the webs? it's UHU clear glue just put between my fingertips and pulled apart and back a few times until it starts to dry then wind it on where you want, it dries fairly durable, not amazingly hard but if you put it somewhere where it's not getting knocked around too much then you should be right
Knightly! I did indeed in part mention you three times while looking in a mirror at midnight eating an apple and drawing occult symbols on my scrotum! and boom here you are! my idea is for tabards for my Howling Griffon models i'll be doing, i'm in the collecting parts stage and want to add some Knightly bits to sit with the fluff i've read so far, So long tabards would be ideal for Termies and some troops like sarge's etc. I think a few swords and laurel heads would also suit? but i'm open to ideas

And don't feel bad about having a hard time getting what everything in the game means. I've been in the hobby for 15 years and I can't even put together a competent force let alone have a game with anyone...that and I have no one to learn with and I feel too stupid going to meet strangers and hobby store to learn to play. Having said that I've never had a huge desire to play the game but if the opportunity should arise where someone would be willing to hold my hand and walk me through it all, I will accept. Otherwise I will forever continue the way I started; collecting and painting what I like.

Thanks again! I know i'm repeating myself but I mean it! I am so pleased your confidence in me hasn't waned with the sporadic nature recently here. Tom, thanks again from you any compliment is wonderful, your mastery of the palette is mind blowing (seriously!) and it may suprise you but I don't really use drybrushing on things hardly at all, I lay a base colour, wash then base colour and highlight up before bringing it all back down with washes and glazes then if needed I'll swing back in deftly and line highlight. :-) easy!
Someone else saw the Nurgle and now after his next project wants me to paint up a nurgle army like i've just done :-) so I guess i'm doing something right. I keep forgetting that my mantra from when I started was to find quick and easy ways to make a model look good that anybody can do! and I've always done that, i've never chased the Crystal brush, NMM pure artwork model style of painting, I want to evoke a feeling when you look at them, an instant story if you will that's eye catching and impressive but you still want to play with them :-)
lets see how I go with that mission statement on the Bloat Drones...... Automatically Appended Next Post: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/753788.page Automatically Appended Next Post: Swap shop thread to my Mino's if anyone is keen?

Interesting, mind, when I say drybrush I don't mean the basic way, just kinda all over. I mean in 2-3 layers, strategically applied, with a very soft brush and high pigment grind paint. In fact, I would actually recommend you try it, in these steps - prime, basecoat green and wash as you are already doing, then drybrush, but targetting the same areas you are currently glazing (using modulation etc), soft brush, then final brush work detailing. I think you would be able to get a very similar result with a lot less time.
I used to think drybrushing was a sin for anything but the most basic painting, but a few pros have relieved me of my bias. I think it would fit your nurgle style because the end result is luminous and velvety at the same time, so you are getting a good contrast traverse but the final look is not shiny or meant to be shiny, and the parts that are appear more wet than inherently glossy. Could work!
Thank you for the very undeserved compliments too

@Tom: Good point on the scheming aspect of the hobby. Official GW sales training would call it "collecting" and it is one of the three hobby pillars along with playing and painting modelling. But really, a great deal of this hobby is staring at little dudes or pictures of little dudes and daydreaming. My "planning" phase goes on a very long time with a lot of projects.
@Nerdfest: I hear what you are saying(see what you typed). I get it. I think a big part of your problem with negativity on the playing aspect of the hobby is that you are on the rules blogs aspect of forums. That stuff seems to get toxic super fast-either toxic or just so mathy not fun garbage. For example, I am head over heels about Necromunda being re-released. I get on the internets to share with other "like-minded" people on YakTribe about it. They want to complain and be negative and ridiculous. I talk with IceAngel or play a game with him or the guys at Adepticon and it's a whole different animal.
I don't know what the gaming store scene is where you are at. Here is Indianapolis it is absurd. I think there are 5 game stores in 10 miles of my place. So, you be jealous of that, while I continue to screw up your techniques on my own models. One store just moved next to my favorite fried chicken place. There has to be someone to play with on that weird little island.
Playing the game and talking about playing the game are two different animals. Luckily, the game really seems to have gotten simpler in this edition. You'll suck at first, and, if you are like me, that sucking just won't end but at least you'll get the muscle memory for it.
I look forward to seeing Howling Griffons from you. That'll make my quartered marines look great...(rollingeyeorkface)

Ah you guys, yep, the rust is bright and I would have actually toned it down if I had the models for a bit longer but Cam was coming to get them and I was still painting them so it was a rush tidy up and a photo shoot! I also would have liked to work on the backs of them more with red swollen flesh around the connections and a bit more shading and bruising added but sadly he needed them for a game that night
I also just obtained a suitcase, an old suitcase and in that suitcase is a heap of models and bits from about 20 years ago! so if there's any collectors out there who love a bit of metal hit me up and i'll see what's there! I have already spotted an old Yarrick and an original Ghaz and his little banner gretchin!

re: the rust - I think the color is perfect, it plays off the green flawlessly. However, I think you flooded a few zones, and there is a hard line between the rust and the metal. In those few areas, a quick drybrush with steel or tin bitz will blend it back in just on the edge. Very few areas to be concerned with though, really liking it.
If I could recommend to you (and everyone) Secret Weapon makes an absolutely sick set of rust and rubber acrylics (and many more besides). Those two sets are staples of pretty much everything I work on 40k wise at the moment, really great paints.

Those Eldar are coming along very nicely! The almost impressionist styling to the armour really sells the alien, otherwordly feel and keeps the eye-catching contrast even with the monochromatic schemes. The Scorpions are the highlight, that softer green is super, but the whole lot together are going to be a beautiful and unique army!
And Ferrus just means more pics of your top-class metallic work, so hell yes!
Best of luck taking the steps back into gaming, having someone willing to help you out should make a world of difference.

I felt like bringing a start to my Howling Griffons so what better place to start than my Captain, so I got some advice and built up a fine impression of a captain sporting a jump pack, a power sword and a plasma pistol standing regally on a rock as he should be.
I used a mix of bits, sternguard legs, a palantine blade, DC jump pack BA torso and while it may look a bit gak at the moment especially with a stand in bare head
I also started to build him in his revered Terminator armour, thinking of the name Howling Griffons and the knightly feel to the history of the chapter I used a spare Huron arm and trimmed the blades off and then filed the lion head and started the basic re sculpting of a beak to make it into a Griffon head yes I know it's a stellar idea

I am myself pretty please with how the Termie version is shaping up, I think in the Chapter Scheme it will look really cool! that fist works so well and resembles a Griffon's Talon ( Huh!, aaaand there's it's name! lol) and hopefully I can sharpen the beak up a bit but it's a bit fiddly at the moment and I don't want to ruin it!
I ordered a left handed storm bolter off a DA command terminator to use with him so I'm pretty keen to get it and start painting him :-)
and on a random note, I had a discussion with my best mate about how many many many years ago ( about 20 to be exact) when we had a heated debate about Eldar and we were arguing about the shape of their helmets if it meant that they had heads like the Coneheads or if it was to secure their hair in a topknot :-) Automatically Appended Next Post: And I need guidance on the colour of the tabards, my original thought was black or bone, but i'm really considering a nice red as well? personally i'm between the red and bone?

Dakka's gallery is just too long winded to work quickly for me, if you could just upload and not have to go through the checking of boxes and sorting into galleries etc I would use it as all I'm after is a simple site to upload into one gallery then link to my blog.
I'm now going to have to re do my entire blog from scratch which will once again put people off and lose some who may miss it. yes I sound annoyed and I am, i'm already having trouble feeling like i'm giving Dakka what I believe it deserves and especially considering I use it as my special place where I always feel like i'm home among friends. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just trying another site.

Post by: Paradigm
To be honest, if you're just going to use the Dakka gallery to host images, you can skip a lot of that. Having stuff in its own gallery folder is nice, but if you're mainly looking for a place to dump pics so you can post them here (rather than actually caring about the votes or anything, which is something of an exercise in futility at times), you don't really need to worry about folders or disabling voting or ticking all the right boxes.
Heck, you can just upload directly to a post and Dakka will shove the pics into the gallery for you, though they can get a bit compressed if you do it that way (though clicking the image gives you the uncompressed version).

Well balls.....I saw I was a few pages behind and everything was boxed out! Friggin image sharing sites. Im with everyone else dude, use DAKKAs hosting. You can upload in batches and it takes very little time once you get used to the options on there. Post by: Camkierhi
When I upload, I just use the Upload more images thing in the gallery options. You can just select a bunch at a time from your folder. And I usually tick the box for Closely related at the bottom. Then I tick disable voting at the top once for all the images. All I have to pick for each image as I scroll down is the I created this box and process the lot. Really easy. Then once they are in the Gallery you can just copy and paste the links to your posts in the blog, but you can also link the images elsewhere like Facebook.
Anyways, be nice to see my fix of Nerdy goodness soon.

O.k guys I tried Dakka gallery this time for my finished Farseer not as bad as I remember but still a little awkward with multiple images due to having to open each image and select the linking code, where the other sites had the option on each image so I could keep track of where I was. but we'll talk about that later
My first HQ for the Eldar, my Farseer
and for something I haven't done in a while, I'm going to post some WIP on my Howling Griffon Captain, I wanted to show you how not perfect my work starts and how easy it is to pull together a really sweet job in a simple way, firstly i've assembled my Captain and primed him with The Army Painter Desert Yellow. then I have used Mechrite red to quarter his armour and base coated other colours like metal and robes etc.
Next I've just washed the entire model over all colours with Agrax earthshade.
so that's where he is at the moment and tomorrow I'll be doing the red and yellow armour so I thought i'd also show you what I use for each colour. For my reds I use these paints over a Mechrite red or scab red base washed with Agrax.
and yellow's are these paints over desert yellow washed with Agrax or you could use Iyanden or Tausept Ochre as a base.

Post by: Paradigm
Farseer is looking very neat! Lovely colour fades on the robe.
Looking forward to more Griffons, you always make that scheme look so damn crisp. Red and yellow are colours I use a fair bit, so it'll be interesting to see your methods.

Thanks Para, I've got the next step in the HG Captain i've now done the reds on him, tomorrow is yellow and then....... everything else so as you can see by the pics (they're all very similar but pics at night are a bitch to show you the red) sorry, as I was saying, as you can see that just doing the reds from such a basic start can already make the model stand out.

I'm really enjoying the format of how you're covering this HG cap. It's satisfying to trace your experience and gives a really cool insight into how you get the model done - so often the product of your work looks unattainable to the lesser trained painter. Any chance we can get a tease of the head/helm choice you'll be using?
This makes me really excited for the vanguard vets and JP cap I have in the pipeline. Just need those pesky bits to arrive

Thanks guys, I do want to try and show everyone's able to paint a really nice tt model. to do the reds I used the colours noted above like this:
*Bloody red over 90% of the panels
*50/50 Bloody red/Hot orange from the top of panels to about 50% down
*pure Hot orange from the top about 30% down
*50/50 Hot Orange, Filthy Brown 15% down
*Pure Filthy Brown edge highlight
*Wash all over panels with Carroburg Crimson
if you've got the paints in front of you and a good clean paint water this doesn't take too long.
Now onto the yellow, I have done the yellows and tomorrow I'll run through how I did them. This model was a great choice as I made a bad choice with shoulder pad using the studded one which made painting the smooth transition really hard and thus you can see a few areas looking a little ordinary but that's the painting game eh! I told you i'm not amazing but love a good tt model, well here's proof
Either way he's looking good for what he is, it's suprising how dirty my bright colours can look on a marine like this!
And I do need advice with his head but we'll get to that in a minute.
Now the head, I found this head and I really want to use it as I think it gives him a really nice sense of dynamism and character as a Knightly leader but it doesn't sit great in the gorget so I'll have to gs a neck on him which might not look great? but I do like the wind swept hair and visage.
And lastly for today I went through my bits and whipped up a Terminator Sarge, thoughts? the shield where it's been filed will hopefully have the Griffon front on it from the flats i'm getting or if it deson't fit then i'll just add a large gem.

Really like (and appreciate) the work in progress shots. I like to see the development of the model as you work on it.
The blending from purple to red on the Farseers robes are really nice. I think the purple into red is a really nice choice.

Well, windswept hair it is then I'll certainly finish the head and see how it looks all done properly. I have put him on a temp hold due to breaking his sword and now I don't have one spare *sigh* so i've got to find a gladius or short sword to fit with his knightly theme.
I did work a fair bit on the Terminator versions base I wasn't sure what to do with him to rival the jump pack version on his Lion King rock but looking through my bits box I found a left over arm from the Artel Miniatures Cybork warboss and it looked like a broken arm by itself and I was hit with inspiration to bring a bit of their history into it since they are massive oath swearers and avenge any wrongs to them brutally and without preamble, I figured a bested foe is appropriate and since all the images I've seen or read of their home world of Mancora makes it a frozen tundra type planet with snow and ice so I wanted to have a grey/light brown rock and tiny suggestions of snow (not full Fenris). The arm by itself could have been simply laying on the ground but I didn't want it to dominate the base and be a focal point I wanted it to be more of a suprise addition that helps bring the model and his standing in the chapter out and tell a story. So I carved some of the main base away and I will be filling it with resin to look like a frozen lake!
so here's where I am with the base and the Captain, I also found a suitable shoulder pad for him.
And I also started mucking around with another base for a model.....

Hey bud, lovely lovely stuff. SUPER cool chapter as well, cannot wait to see this finished. TRULY, dont stress about those rules and all that ish, just get a good buddy to hang and play with and play practice games that illuminate rules. Shoot ive found the best way to learn new games is just ot have friends teach you, and visit the rule book later! Either way, youll soon be enjoying your models on the table top!. The eldar walker looks huge, cant wait to see what you do with this. ALL that lovely damo red is going be very very attractive at the end of the day! As per dakka being quiet....i dunno, ive always thought it to be a little quiet after my initial experience with it back in 2010/11. Alot of the guys very active in the blog seem to not be around as much. Or maybe its me . If youre not already, get on instagram! your models are going to reach alot more people there and since its mainly JUST photos, your whole feed, if you want it to be, will be all bad ass mini photos of your favorite painters. Its pretty inspiring. If you already are, add me. @beboppaints. Itll be good to see you " IRL" .

Thanks Theo i've some more wip on that Eldar model for you to peruse mate! and a little on the Nurgle dudes. I got the reds done on the Eldar arms am i'm trying to decide how to paint the details and gun? shall I attempt to paint every gem as a gem? I think it'll look good but I'd have to watch how I shaded them all to match up with his pose?
and a little on the Nurgle guys, just did some green on the shoulders, washed the feet with Typhus and dirtied up the scythes, it makes a big difference t the overall look and some recess washes and highlights should get them near done.

I feel you on the quiet front Damo, sometimes it feels like i'm shouting into the void when I update my blog. I don't think it's true ultimately, though. My views, though I tend not to really track that on the blog, assuredly go up and a bunch of people are still in touch, so it's inspiring all the same!
The wraithknight looks killer. You've struck a really cool and simple pose on it too and your paintwork applies really well on a big scale as well as a small! Keep up the good work, you're putting out stuff real fast.

I have no idea what you should do gem wise. I’d mess it up, so I remain quiet on that front.
Another reason for the quiet I feel I saw that at least here in the Midwest of the USA spring has just sprung and we had our first decent weekend in ages. I planted a tree yesterday and we did yard work. Lots of people I know got outside and enjoyed the spring weather and outdoors. Just a bit of perspective as you guys are probably entering fall in the land of drop bears and wrong directional swirling toilets .

Lovely work on the Eldar bits, and the nurgle chaps.
I don't think every bump has to be a gem on the Eldar. Sometimes it can look a bit too much for every one to be gems.
Maybe start with the few that definitely have to be gems (in your mind), one in each cluster or section of armour, and see how it looks, do a few more until you reach a point where more would be too much... Or search online to see examples of each extreme to decide where you want to fall.
DDakka does have quite a variation in "active" traffic. I've yet to spot a foolproof pattern in any time range, and I have tried to experiment with posting at different times of different days.
I've resigned myself to broadcasting whenever I'm ready and eventually getting replies whenever they occur.

Gorgeous brush work as ever - the red transitions on the big Eldar dude is particularly impressive. Don't worry about lack of comments, personally I've struggled to leave lots of comments recently - I'm perusing DD most days, but just struggle to put actual words down at times... On my own threads, I tend to watch the 'views' more then comments to check if there's interest in what I'm doing... I'll also add in to the picture question - my preferred is the DD gallery, although for other images I now use imgur, seems to be a pretty stable, reliable host, plus it's still free... Anyway, just keep posting and your readers will appreciate your work, even they don't always say as much

I have some finished and some WIP today I finished a trio of Wraithlords for a local guy, he wanted a nice clean bone scheme to do over a whole heap of models I also have some work in progress on the Wraithknight arms, a different take on Garro and a bit of robe work on the HG Captain
I'll start with the finished stuff first, Wraithlords! Zhandri dust primer with reikland fleshshade around nodes and in recesses then highlighted with Ushabti Bone, the dark colour is black mixed with silver.
What else has been languishing on my desk? my Wraithknight arms, I decided to go all out on the gems and paint all of them and also started the Suncannon, taking a slightly different approach I feel i've taken a more mature approach to this model and i've held myself back and taken a little more time to get it right. wanting the focal point of the model to be the centre I painted the base of the cannon barrel blended into the brightest instead of the normal look of the muzzle to keep your eye in the right spot when his arms are on.
and the gems.
I also was asked to paint a model of Nathaniel Garro but the client wanted a purple and glowing scheme with crimson and greens worked in as well as done in nmm and this he tells me after I'd already started the normal scheme *sigh* especially since i've not painted nmm before and don't use an airbrush I thought i'd have a go at just doing a high contrast armour and it looks pretty good so far.
and lastly my Howling Griffons Captain, i've been working on his robes today. still a heap to do but he's a nice model and looks sweeeeet!

Your current work is absolutely stunning. It has reached that level where it is both beautiful to look at and inspiring me to not try to cut so many corners. The Wraithknigjt arms are some of the most exceptional work I have seen.
The idea of the "reversed" colours on the cannon are inspired.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks Archer, I'm not really doing anything different but like you mentioned i'm not cutting corners so i'm guessing the effect is stronger and therefore more impressive? i'm having a lot of fun with the Wraithknight but i'm still a bit unsure about how to add any metallic colours on him as i've always thought wraithbone wasn't a shiny product? yet gold or silver chasing is a common look? what do you think?

Post by: nerdfest09
I always loved the look, took me a few years to 1) learn how to paint red 2) learn how to paint yellow and 3) get decent enough to tackle the quartered scheme! :-) The thought of them as another heraldic chapter akin to the templars is appealing and they do look wickedly cool!
17738
Post by: Briancj
Traditionally, Wraithbone is an organic 'grown' material, yes. But there's plenty of examples of 'shiny metallic' in nature, think bug carapaces, butterfly wings, etc. etc.
You're all good.

Sublime work! A very unusual take on the model but it really works. The armour is also amazing for a first try at NMM (many people think NMM is only ever the supershiny black-to-white, but this is a great example of a more subdued but still effective approach) and that sword glow is nice and subtle, definitely not overblown.
Most impressive is that you've managed to implement these new techniques while still leaving the hallmark of your unique style very obvious. A triumph, the client should be overjoyed!

Thanks guys, he was one of those models where I thought i'd be able to do him fairly fast in his normal scheme but soon realised once i'd started that I had to do a very different job and I got a bit nervous as I went along as he kept wanting to change things and I thought he was expecting a much higher level than what I can do. I really appreciate your comments Para, and knowing how well you yourself paint it certainly eased my mind to read!

Most of the people who have had you paint have either been really open to whatever, like me, or very up front on what they are looking for, like RiTides. But not everyone is like that. It is important that when you take a job that both you and the person you are painting for have a full understanding of what is expected from the get go. If either person feels slighted, then it is hard for you to have repeat customers, which is really the bread and butter of the gig.

G'day dudes! long time no see sorry i've been lax lately on Dakka stuff, I have been working on some models, mainly groundhog day Eldar Wraithguard and my little palette cleanser a Howling Griffons Contemptor, so I finally have some time to show you a few wip photos just so you know i'm still around
15 Wraithguard that just need the bases done now, so many edges, so many gems.
and now my Contemptor! I nearly gave up on him as the cast was not great in spots and it made me pretty lackluster but I think i've got him to a point where he's passable and the paint will hopefully be the main thing you see? I had to do a fair bit of work on his yellow leg which is why it's back to front to hide any bits I didn't clean up right I still think he's looking impressive as a larger model to go in my force, i'm really loving how they look but still need to find some tabards for terminators if anyone knows where I can score some?
hope you like

Why do the Primaris Mehrens hurt to paint? I know that you’re joking, but I’ve gotten to the stage where regular Tactical Marines look goofy in comparison. Perhaps Gdubs will do a Deathwatch style revamp? But then there’s the case of how are ten super humans supposed to fit inside a teeny-tiny metal bawks... okay, I’ll stop now
Edit: or is it that there’s so much edge highlighting required?

Thanks Cosmic, I just don't like the whole point and aesthetic of the Primaris and of course that's purely a personal thing. I can't agree with the movement of the timeline using them the way they have and having them taking over all promotion and pictures in White Dwarf and online and I find the Agressors armour and reavers very 80's cartoon.

I hear you nerdfest, the Primaris lore is a bit on the nose to me as well. I do like the proportions and sense of movement in the regular (non skeletor) models though. /conflicted.
17353
Post by: Cosmic
Thanks for your thoughts, nerdfest. I also agree that the lore is a little forced in some ways. Still, I reckon the models more than make up for that.
Perhaps when (or if) Lion el'Jonson returns, we will see a resurgence of our regular and good ol' Marines.
I read something (on reddit/40klore) where someone mused with idea that Guilliman was not one of The Emperor's favourite sons (despite him being arguably the most successful) because Roboute wanted the Space Marines to be more than just a weapon or tool.
I think we all know that The Big E intended to put aside The Legions once their work was done, but Guilliman thought that the Adeptus Astartes should go on to serve a higher purpose in society when the time came.
Not necessarily a good thing, one could argue.
Surely, The Emperor intended for humans to eventually become a psychic race, heirs to the stars and successors to the Eldar, but we all know how that went!

as for airbrushing, Whaley got it right, I don't use an airbrush at all, I did have one but it just doesn't appeal to me and I prefer the look of painted models. The closest I get is using cans of primer

Yeah, those really are something special. A real masterclass in simple-yet-effective schemes.
If I were to be incredibly nitpicky, I might suggest the power lances could do with just a bit more brightness right at the edge/tip, but that's possibly just the overall muted tones making them look a little dimmer than they are.
If I were to be nitpicky, that is. Because I'm not, because those are simply awesome!

As much as I dig on your beat to hell looking metallics you can produce, it certainly is a neat departure to see a "pristine" look on these Custodes. Well done.
I do appreciate the encouragement. I've been pumping out my own stuff. I'm with you on the trying not to drive myself mad bit. I've just been checking to see I didn't miss a part, making it pretty alright and moving on to the next on to the next.

Thanks guys, it's been a tough slog finding time and energy to update with a lot going on, but I feel very Zen finally showing you a bit of progress! :-) I'll probably move on the vehicles first so the liquid mask isn't sitting on them for weeks. The ZM/SH board I'll have a bit of a play around with and see what you think! any ideas where I can score a stencil for numbers from?

And i'm sad to say the Skull helmet went bye bye! as it was sculpted in position I had to dremel the head out, I know it's a shame but duty calls. I need my barre head fix!

That's a fantastic update Damo. Very excited to see where those terminators go and that Nurgle marine is captivating. I think you got the tones of the yellows, browns and metallics just right.

Fast painting for the wall details would be washes & a little dry brushing IMHO but you could go several ways. The SH figures look interesting, I will be watching those progress as I am a SH fan. The Chapter Master already looks really impressive as does the blade. The chipping/rust is truly excellent but it's easy to forget about the perfect subtle yellow & red gradient changes because the rust demands your attention at first. Can I also ask what shade of gold name/brand you used for the jetbikes? It looks great.
All those bases for free...I hate you:-)
51769
Post by: Snrub
Mmm, those lines on the predator are exceedingly crisp. Do you use painters tape?
What shouty head have you got lined up for your chapter master?
What details are you referring to on the ZM walls?
If it's the white spaces, then i'd be hitting them with a black wash to try and make them look like glass.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks fella's the HG Master I think will be getting a non shouty head! (shock horror!!) I think as a chapter they are more reserved and the stoic professionalism that they just get in and get the job done with the eyes of the Emperor on them, so I think a nice clenched jaw or sneer like head will be the go! :-)
And my gold, it's primed brown then over brushed with the army painter Greedy Gold and washed with Agrax. the gold is then re applied, next I mix in a small bit of silver into the gold and start highlighting, then a tiny bit more silver added for more highlights and finally pure silver on the edges and then washed with sepia. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and yes, the window parts are what i'm talking about and the two bits I painted on one section just under the windows? does that look o.k as a base? not too basic? there will be some wall sections that have open window parts in them that I'll be adding stained glass in and some flat walls I plan on adding murals too.
I just want to make sure it looks good for the entire board, it'll be a 6x4 interior so lots to do!

Think I would go with a metallic. Go all titanium, gold, drybrush silver, purple wash done.
A little more time consuming but what about some nice Blanchesque brown images printed up and cut in to make it look like frescos.
Speed paint it marble maybe? Probably not the best option, but I can do marble fairly quick so I am bias.

Cheers guys, I was thinking of printing some murals and gluing them on to other sections as there are other sections with flat walls so you read my mind! :-) i'm also getting some sections with hollow window sections i'm adding stained glass to! I'll maybe add some more stains and wear and tear as I go along creating areas for play, but you'll all be part of that when I get to it :-)

I was wondering this myself, Gits. But I'm liking the silver more and more the more I look at it. Kind of makes a nice almost anti-colour splash.

Thanks dudes! i'm pretty pleased you like them, I could have spent many many more hours doing all the details but I think the balance of good looking armour and other details is good for an attractive bunch of miniatures you won't mind playing with and they'll still look rather fetching in any environment
I might do a yellow step by step if you really want? it's not that hard once you get your method down my choice of colours is a little different than some but i'll see how I go since I have to paint literally half (and only half) of my Howling Griffons yellow i'll get a chance no doubt
and that (I think) is all my commission work up to date now and i've only got my HG's to focus on and I have also seen some teaser pics from my mate who is 3d printing me my Space Mortalis board and my oh my does it look completely frickin epic!

Glad you guys like him, I think the neck thing is not as bad as it looks but thanks to GW changing scale left right and center the old Chappy looks a bit awkward. 51769
Post by: Snrub
Beautiful work there Damo. The scroll work on the dready is just begging for a name.
The jump pack bloke is exceptional. The head gives the pose a lot of flavour. Like he's just had some tyranid monstrosity bellow right in his face. Air and phlegm and half digested guardsman rushing past and getting stuck on his armour.
I hope the hero doesn’t get his hair stuck in the jump packs intake
This is exactly why you need a helmet.
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Top work on the JP fellow. Where's that head from? I don't recognise it, so I'm guessing third party?
All I would say is that the power weapon lacks a little contrast. Some pure white/off white at the very edges would just help it pop a bit more, as it is it fades into the rest of the model a little from certain angles.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks fellas, that head is from KF Studio I think, part of a Space wolf style pack, i'll have to check.
Para I am going to blame the pics for the sword effect :-) and my eyes for the pics so therefore it's my fault that the sword looks like that in the images, it's brighter in person I promise.
I wonder what I can get done tomorrow!!?
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Fair enough, I thought it might be the pics as it's slightly out of focus in a couple so if the effect was there I wouldn't see it anyway. Great work nonetheless!

Some call me crazy, some call me mad, some call me Damo, some call me Nerd, some call me repetitive but I think mad might be most appropriate since i'm attempting to paint 4 Howling Griffon tanks at once yep, 2 Rhino's a Razorback and a Landraider
I've started by quartering them all and have done the first two layers of highlight on the red parts. Only issue I had was when I was quartering the Landraider last I accidentally did the wrong quarters in the wrong colours I can laugh now but at the time I was not a happy man!
so here's the WIP.

Post by: Snrub
Hot damn those reds! I never tire of seeing you paint red, Damo.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Drop Echidna's that's what we need!
I'm not scared of pods i've just never had any luck with them in the (what is now? 7 games in nearly 20 years?) games i've played having them land on things or even scatter right off the table, all 3 of them against a giggling Eldar player
I didn't get a chance to do heaps today so maybe tomorrow I'll show you more red progress I also really like how the reds turn out, I mean, you can see slight brush strokes and the blending isn't glass smooth but as a whole it hits the eye and looks good enough so i'll continue on i'm really looking forward to doing the troops and Terminators especially as I am going to splash out and get the series 2 collector Japanese release models for the Termies then convert them to have whatever weapons I want!
So, fun story but night before last at 4am my wife's let the dogs out for a wee from our bedroom doors (that go into the yard) then not 5 seconds later she's screaming and telling me to get up! turns out the dogs had raced straight out and nailed themselves one of the biggest brushtail possums i'd seen! so there I was in my undies running across the yard in the dark when it was zero degrees to try and wrench a rather angry large marsupial from the jaws of three large hounds while the Dachshund kept just running in to try and grab a bite I managed quickly to get it and tried to get it over the fence to safety but just my luck it hit the fence and dropped back into the yard to be snatched and dispatched by William and boy is he strong when he want to be i've been off work this week with asthma and a chest infection and trying for 10 minutes to pull a possum from just about killed me, ended up on my back trying to wrestle his jaws open to no avail! it took my wife shaking a container of food to distract him.
so, probably not a fun story but certainly a story.

I wish we had video of the possum incident. I bet it was fantastic to watch.

You haven't played in a while, have you Damo? Drop pods haven't been able to scatter off the table for a long time now...
51769
Post by: Snrub
Have pods ever been able to scatter off the table? I thought that was pretty much the main reason for taking them?
The smallest of our 3 cats likes to fight with the possum that lives in the gum in our back yard. You can hear the bloody thing doing that weird huffing bark they make when ever the cat has a go at it. I'm just glad the neither of the dogs care enough about it. If they did we'd have dead wild life littering our yard. Bloody terriers.

HOLY TERRA, nerdfest! Everything is amazing about your HGs - really beautiful red and yellow quartering, and the Terminator Commander’s face is incredibly lifelike.
One of my favourite ever issues of White Dwarf was 309, which featured a Howling Griffons army by John Cadice. I just remembered and went to find it... I’m looking at it now, such fond memories. I used to take this issue with me when I went away (it’s a bit worn out), it’s such a stunning army! Thirteen years younger me wondered just how the hell one was supposed to paint such a monumental force of The Emperor’s finest
One thing that they didn’t do was paint the quartering on the tanks, as they thought it looked a little strange. They instead painted it on the doors. However, I would say that your approach at painting the vehicles is super cool and in your face, just as Space Marines should be!
Keep up The Emperor’s work, nerdfest! These guys deserve a showcase in a future White Dwarf, too Automatically Appended Next Post: GOOD GOD those tanks are beautiful, that battle damage is amazing!

Those are magnificent looking. The fact that you can belt out that many tanks so quickly, to such a high standard is both astounding and outstanding.
To be honest, I was kind of hoping the weapon casings on the landraider and razorback would get painted metal like the predator sponsons, but when they look like that it's hard to niggle at!
And happy birthday, mate. Hope you had a good one.

Post by: Fango
Nerd, your paintwork is masterful, and even that term doesnt begin to state how truly amazing those tanks turned out. Yellow and Red being two of the hardest colors to paint well, especially on large flat surfaces, just goes to show how much talent and skill you've got tucked up your sleeves. Thanks for sharing, and Happy Birthday!
