Come on guys, I'm disappointed. SPORE. SPORE SPORE SPORE. The game of the decade.
The creature creator is out. The demo version is free and the full version is $10. If you get it online from EA you'll get $10 off the price of the final game so think of it as a preorder bonus. Other retailers who are offering the physical copy may also be doing it, but not all are guaranteed to do so.
Me? Well I've already created a few things. Most are roosters of varying sizes so I'll have to show the single cutesy one:
Other neat stuff people have made:
Oh yeah, and all these small image files? Yeah, just drag and drop them into your game - that is, open up the game, go to the creature editor, and left-click drag the image into it. The creation data is embedded in the .png file.
None of the pic links work...may be a work filter though?
I'm still reserving judgement. The concept and everything sounds awesome but until a demo or something comes out about the actual gameplay, I'm waiting.
I play
I will magnetize (now doing LED as well) your models for you, send me a DM!
I was really looking forward to spore until I played the creature creation demo. That made me much more concerned that we are going to see something closer to the sims than simcity in terms of depth and target audience/market. Dont get me wrong, the sims is fun, but I am a massive simcity fan and still play simcity 4 to this day.

I'm moving and my gaming computer is packed, I didn't want to add more programs to my generic do-everything laptop. I've been waiting for spore for what feels like years, I didn't really care about getting a program which is only one tiny aspect of the game. If the game is as great as it looks to be, I'll lose many a night playing through.
And nice looking nids! You could actually dominate the galaxy in a game with genestealer's!

I imagine a lot of rage will pop up in forums because of this. I really didn't expect much more than a cutesy pokemon-and-sims simulator but with all the expectations people have built up due to the hype, they're just going to make too many expectations of this game.
Right now I'm trying to decide what monster to make because there's a megathread on SA and the goons have already made many creatures from popular media. Cthulhu, Cloverfield monster, various Pokemon, and 50 renditions of humans and "roosters". With all the wild creations people are making, it'll be a rarity to see normal Earth creatures.
Only the cutesy factor has turned me off a bit, but looking at people making darker, weirder stuff has me interested again. I'll give the creator a shot and see what I think. That ability to drop in .png files is already impressive though.

I have always wanted to not suck at Simcity. I am more into Civilization and Starcraft.
My buildings always turn into flashing squares for some reason.
I always thought Spore was going to be like Homeworld but I guess not. Looks like it is being aimed at kids. Note that I have not actually tried the creature creator yet.

I think the game is aimed towards kids only. I do believe you start the game as a single cell organism and then you keep evolving till you become a race of warmongers or a peaceful race.

hrm. Doesn't mean they can't take the engine and turn it into something more adult later on. They have been working on it for long enough, what has that guy been doing?

Sorry I meant, "not just aimed towards kids".
I always think building a empire is more of an adults job.

The sharing aspect of the sporepedia will likely be broken with the millions of crap people randomly churn out - especially after release day. I should've guessed ever since Will Wright talked about it, but I was really hoping they would have a good system for upvoting nice creatures. As it stands, it looks maybe 1 in 1000 creatures gets descriptive tags and even has a tiny ounce of effort put in.

I get the feeling this game is SimWorldwideEmpireLetsSeeWhatHappensMaybeICanMakeShiguruJealous.
But that doesn't mean it won't be a great game .
I'm not real excited, tbh, Starcraft 2 and Fallout 3 are the ones that are getting my panties wet.
Great work Tongue, nicely crafted critters you've got. Been a while since I messed with Spore or checked out what people are doing with the full version, might need to get back on that ...

Unfortunately, EA is going to be removing penis-monsters from the game. :( Apparently if you have too many obscene offenses they will even ban your account from sharing.
I'm off to make care bears and ninja turtles I guess.
Dunno if any of you guys have been following it, but Spore is getting absolutely *hammered* on Amazon for the SecuROM DRM they're using in Spore. 2000+ 1-star reviews and a mountain of negative comments.
And it's trickling over into Metacritic with a <50% user rating.
And then Torrent stats are saying that a whopping 500,000 copies have been downloaded in the first couple weeks.
It's caught the attention of Forbes, Washington Post and Ziff Davis.
I'm of a mind that EA may have pushed the DRM thing a bit too far...

Yep, I read all about it from the SA thread. From what I've heard, it's much easier to just pirate the game than actually pay for it and have to jump through the DRM hoop regularly. Add to that the ability to download .png files of anything you want and share your stuff without going through the sporepedia.
It's a funny thing. When will publishers learn that they can never win a DRM vs. hacker war?
