Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Nice to know the 'two part dreadnought' isnt true.

Also even nicer to know that the Marines are not mandatory Ultras, I saw no ultra iconography at all.

This is better than I hoped for and the Captain looks awesome.

Very, very cool. I'm also glad to see they're not "mandatory Ultras," and the molded Tactical Squad arrow markings are a nice touch.

Digging all of it.

That's bad news. If not for the molded Tactical arrows, I would have bought this set...

yes they would be impossible to file off

I must say I am impressed. The new captain is very characterful and everything else looks like a very nice compromise between looks+dynamism and easy assembly.

WOW !! Those really look fantastic !! I am even more impressed the more I see pictures of these models!!

I'm curious what the little detail depicts at the bottom of the Captains backpack ... it looks like a distorted laurel wreath but tired eyes or tired monitor can't quite make it out.

Too bad that there's no cool terrain but I can live without it ... especially since a $60 price tag is a great deal given everything included !!

really lookin forward to this box set. I haven't done anything with my marines so maybe this will get me back into em

So, is the Multi-Melta going to be worth taking in this edition then?

Are they going to have another throw-back to 2nd edition and allow it to be used in two modes, one of them a heavy flamer type attack?

Will it have a blast marker?

Or will it be an odd choice to include in the starter?

Maybe it was just easier to mold up?

Keep in mind AP1 weapons add 1 to the vehicle damage chart so even if you glance you can still destroy on a 6 instead of it being knocked down to an immobilized on a 6. There are few AP1 weapons, the majority being melta guns and they are now a little more valuable.

They chose the multi-melta for the dreadnought because they're not one in plastic currently.

This is confirmed in the new rulebook, on the 'What You Need' page.

Curiously, though, the book pictured there (which admittedly is probably just a computer mock-up) appears to be a hardcover...

Looking at the close up of the box back I can just about read that the box includes

The miniatures listed as shown on the back. No scenery mentioned at all.

Warhammer 40K rulebook

Assault on Black Reach.
Probably similar to the starter book for Battle for Macragge

Dice and Gaming aids
This might imply that the gaming aids are in fact the new transluscent green markers. Though it could mean the red plastic measuring sticks.

I saw a more finished picture of the box back somewhere that had two red whippy sticks, the new green templates (40k sized not apoc for those kneejerkers out there) and the same little batch of plain white dice plus scatter from the previous edition. No marker bitz.

I think you're probably right, and we'll have even more of the red things hanging around.

No scenery at all would make me sad though.

The set contains among the sprues and bases and some other stuff (collectors flyer with an picture of the comming drop pod), two red sticks, a small template set (comparable to the former white ones but better and in green), a softcover book which contains onyl parts of the rules and not the complete rules as in the former version.

Oh, and BTW the minis look even better than in the pics.

All in all, the box is worth its bucks.

I wonder why they chose to include those infamous whippy measuring sticks instead of one of their tape measures. Impromptu fencing sessions aside, they're not very practical for a lot of tasks.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Personally I'd prefer more than six dice. At least ten would be a whole lot better IMHO.

Whippy sticks are excellent when you cut them into 6-inch chunks for measuring movement. But yes, outside of that, their utility is limited.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

That would be because whippy sticks are a heck of a lot cheaper to produce.

I actually used to use them quite a lot. They do ok, so long as both players use them, since they're not actually measuring full inches.

I still find that part dubious. Particularly since it's exactly the same runour that was spread about the 4th ed set, even after it had been released.

I'd be very surprised if it's any different to the 4th ed version.

No rumor but a fact, some of us were already able to flip through the real thing and it is not the complete rules.

Which runs completely contrary to the designer's notes by Rick Priestley in latest WD UK. He states he insisted on the full rules being included.

"Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Slayer of worlds! Felt the power throb in his weapon. He clutched it tightly in his hand and turned towards his foe letting it build in the twin energy spheres and then finally! RELEASE! The throbbing weapon ejaculated burning white fluid over them as Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! laughed manfully!" - From the epic novel, Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Obliterates! the! The prototype mini rulebook I saw had pages 2-95, the full reference section and index with a truncated Introduction section. I suspect the missing intro pages are in the Black Reach manual, which I did not get to see.
