Ok ladies and gents having watched the site for some time I thought I should finally join up. And in doing so I thought I would post a "in progress" report of my latest project: the Imperial Fists. c/c are always welcome and encouraged.

Firstly a little note on why I chose to paint them the way I did. Firstly, I did not want to do any dry brushing. Namely, because most models I have done (I also have a 4000 or so pt. IG army) in the past have allways been done with drybrushing. And when I varnish them they look like big time doo-doo. I guess its just the way I paint or something but once they hit the tabletop I hate the way they look.

Secondly, The washes make everything look "muddy" and with using a yellow paint this was the LAST thing I wanted. So...I know, Im crazy for doing it...I am using a black base on all mini's. My GOD does it take 15 layers to paint a single shoulder guard but I am very happy with the results. I noticed in some area's that the paint is not quite uniform and a hint of black shows through. However, everyone I have shown them to at my FLGS can't stop saying how it gives a cool marbleing effect to the army...so I might and I might not stick with it. So help me out with this guys and lemme know what you think.

Ok: First up is my first scout squad

These guys are done and will not be receiving anymore love. Well, I might drill out the barrels as I noticed that I forgot to....but other than that they are finished. Here are some close-ups of the SL and the HB troopies.

HB guy. Not sure how the pic shows it but I LOVE how his aquilla turned out.

Side

Back

Heres a frount shot of the SL. just a slight tweek to his arm positioning. I was wanting a more "leaderly" pose.

Side shot..forgot to take a back shot. I can take and post later if anyone is intrested.

Up next is the Vet. SGT from my Vet. Squad. Hes not done but I would put him at close.

Again no shading or wash used all the work on his face took forever....but I am very pleased with the results.

Side shot

Now I made this shot a bit darker so you could see the face.

I hope you guys like and again any c/c is welcome.

Burb

P.S. Bonus "I be old points" if you can name the book in the background. Even more if you actually played during that time like me.....

fnc821 - i disagree - the whole concept looks like a 3D cartoon. it's something i've never considered before as it doesn't suit my painting style but i really like it. Good job Burb.

i think the book is Rogue Trader.

Yeah, I love the look! Everything looks so awesomely comic-book like!

Particularly the scout w/ Heavy Bolter. Very "Incredibles"-core.

Dagnabbit, I was going to say "Ooh, nice work going all comic-like on us", but others beat me to it.

It does look really good, and very different from the style most people go for. I dig the way you´ve used the black/yellow contrasts to good effect.

One thing I noticed; the bases are very similar on all those scouts, and look a bit as if they´ve just been thrown together.

Seeing as these are scouts that might be fine, but I hope you´ll spend more time on the bases for your characters. They really deserve it with this paintjob.

fnc821: The black lining is purely intentional. I was going for a Deathblow by Jim Lee image when I started painting them.

Ala:

On my trial mini (one of the more generic bolter wavin' scouts) you might notice that the black lining is very, very thin. This didn't have the effect I was going for. I wanted a very sharp contrast between the raised and recessed area's- without doing any highlighting. Well, highlighting via drybrushing. Its hard to make out but the weapons and the Vet's loin cloth have painted highlights but no drybrushing.

bubber: Wow! Your Old!!!! Lol Yes, its a first ed. Rouge Trader. I was searching it for idea's the other night and just hadn't put it back on the shelf.

Scottywan82 and Xanthos: Thanks a lot for the comlements. Yes, I am trying a very comic-y look to them and your comments really make me feel that I am pulling it off. Its so - ing time consuming. With the black base coat it litterally takes me a day to paint up a single trooper.

Xanthos: I SUCK at basing. Well, not completely true as I have never really tried to do any of the amazing diorama bases that the other dakka-ites can do. I thought about trying to do a cork "rock" but how do you affix the mini to the cork? Super glue? Wouldn't it just break right off? Any pointers suggestions would be wonderful.

I too am doing an Imperial fists army but I reckon your style puts mine to shame. I really dig it! For rocks on the base, I left a a tub of polyfilla with the lid off and just break bits off as I need it. Spray the bits black, highlight with whatever rock colour takes your fancy and then flock the base around. Takes a few minutes then your done!

Please don't ever think that my stuff would put your to shame! Everyone has their own take on things and I would love to see how you are doing on yours! Us IF players gotta stick together.

As for the baseing Is Polyfilla available here in the US? If not is there an equivelant I can use? Is it a liquid that dries out brittle?

I think in the US a similar type of filler product is "Spackle"? Its the pre mixed stuff not the powdered version. Not a great photo but you can see the bases and "rocks" here if you don't mind me posting a pic of mine

Oh I see. I was thinking more along the lines of something they physically stand on. Make 'em look more "heroic" and all. But I like your idea and will probaly try that with some of my tacticals like yours.

Nice IF btw. Very clean.

Ok... I can't say that I like it, because I don't really like the black lining technique your using. But I can, at the very least acknowledge that you are doing a very good job, and are a very good painter.

keep up the good work.

Sorry for the lack of updates - B'day is this weekend but were busy so the ol' lady and I went out of town over the weekend. Once we sort the pics from the camera I will take some shots of my finished Vet's and my next group - Termies.

To all: Thanks for the great comments/criticism. I know that the style I chose to use is a like/love kind of thing. Thanks for the support and after IG sees the new codex I am sure I will do ssome more work on them and they use a much less "bold" style and will post some of those.

Here is a question for you dakkaite's....

Friday before heading out I picked up the new Codex (and slapped my head 15 times for assembling the termies before I got the codex...stupid me) and smuggling it onto the plane and someone brought up their old mini's and bits. I managed to get quite a few gems (even some RT era stuff...got a sweet RT chaplain gonna get some love soon) but notable I got all the parts for all Heavy Weapons...minus the backpacks. Can I order these? Trade for them? Try and make my own? I need help on this one. I can handle the easy stuff kinda mods...like repositioning arms/hands and what not but I wouldn't want the backpacks to look like rubbish...Anyone?

Ok guys. Latest updates. None are quite done...as I start to get walleye from paiting 15 layers of yellow but I thought I would give an update.

Firstly, I honestly had so much fun painting the scouts I painted a second squad of metal one that I grabbed out of the previously mentioned bits box.

Here is a close up of the crouching sniper:

Back:

Next up is a shot of the terminators that I unfortunately assembled before I got the new codex and just now got around to starting. Looks like I'm hoing to need to pick me up an extra fig (on top of the AoBR box I got)

Cloesup shot of the assault termie:

Side Shot:

Next we have my test mini for my tacticals:

And next, my modest attempt at a custom pose:

So, thats it for this week guys. C&C are always welcome!!!!

Yeah man, I'm really liking the colours and how you have completely re-invented a colour scheme we all know and love. We know that they're imperial fists, but we know that they're yours too, not just GW studio copies!!

What colour did you paint your bases? cos it looks like goblin green, but my old pot of it ran out, and the new pot is a different colour!! your bases look like the old goblin green, is it??

Wow, hey thanks for the praise guys. I promise to have an update up soon, its just I have been torn between about 5 different projects.

2 more Scout squads
The AoBR Dread
Finishing the Terminators.
5 Scout bikes
And my own custom Sternguard Squad.

That and building your own Sternguard has been tougher/funner than I thought it would be. I ordered the 'Fist Conversion packs and the Terminator Honor Shoulder guards throguh Mail Order and then I ordered a metric crap ton of scenic bases as my basing ability is absolute crap. I will take pics of them before and after I get them painted but I am really liking them.

EDIT: Oh and thats not to mention the Tactical Squad I never seem to get around to painting...
