In games it's common for 1,2,3 or more characters to die throughout the story. Some are shocking, some predictable. Some are meorable.

1. Jenny Romano "The Darkness": You've known Jenny since you were a little kid, back when you were orphans. Now your all grown up, and a complete bada$$. Demonic pwers, mob hitman, and a voice to die for. Yet the best part of your day? You meet up with Jenny at her apartment, and watch some t.v. When you last see her, she has Uncle Paulie's .357 againts her temple. The Darkness forces you to watch, rendering you powerless. As she is pushed up against the glass, her last words stick with you. "Jackie, this is not your fault."

2. Maria Santiago "Gears of War 2": Yu've spent a good part of your journey with you friend, Dom. And you promise him "We'll find her." After a stroke of luck, you find his wife trapped in a drop pod. You order you bot to hack it open. Dom is ecstatic. As the doors fall away, Maria walks out, shaken, and speechless. 'Maria! Thank God!" Dom runs to his love. You break it to him. "Dom." He looks into your face. And back at his wife's. She is gaunt, hairless, and catatonic. Dom knows what he must do. "It's okay Dom." You walk away. He pulls his boltok pistol. You hear from a great distance, bang.

These are just two of the deaths that I found particularly moving. Post yours.

I would defenately put in for this:

Jackie Estacado The Darkness: He kills himself after seeing his girlfriend murdered before his eyes. Then he comes back, and blows himself up to take out three enemies. That's damn memorable.

Final Fantasy 2 on the SNES, Palom and Porum turn themselves to stone to save you and your party. I don't care if they come back later, they still "died" at the time.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

Forever alone

I find FF's deaths quite boring. It was easier to belive in the old 2D games TBH.

1. Sergeant Johnson, Halo 3: You've spent all three games with this guy. He escaped Halo, developed an immunity to the Flood, helped kill Tartarus, and saved Master Chief's ass several times. Then he gets stabbed in the back by 343 Guilty Spark. And it wasn't a heroic death or anything, he just died. No fanfare, no funeral.

2. Ares, God of War: It feels so satifying when Kratos kills him. It looks like you'd expect a god to die; a huge explosion and release of power.

3. Theseus, God of War II: You kill him by slamming his head in a door. 'nuff said.

4. Praetor Fenix, Starcraft: Brood War: This guy is a true hero. He marched across hundreds of worlds, killed countless Zerg, survived an ambush by the Zerg (albiet having to be placed permanently inside a Dragoon walker), holds back an endless swarm of Zerg from a warp-gate, then, of course, he gets stabbed in the back by Kerrigan.

5. Eliphas the Inheritor, Dawn of War: Dark crusade: If you beat the CSM stronghold mission, you get to see what happens to a servant of Chaos who fails in his duty; in this case, he explodes in a huge spray of blood and gore. Nasty.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Yea that Darkness scene was pretty sad...

Btw is the 'big boss' death scene this one, linked above? If it is it's longer than Trinity's death in the Matrix: Revolution and that ran for almost four minutes. This guy just rambled on and kept falling over, it as good for the first minute or so but then he just repeated himself.

The ones I were going to post have already been mentioned, but Aeris from FFVII is definitely on the list.

Fenix from Starcraft.

Also, Kerrigan from Starcraft, when she gets infested by the Zerg. Although she's technically still alive, she is no longer the same character.

I'd absolutely have to say that the most shocking death of all time would be:

Spoiler:
The 'worst' ending on the first Silent Hill. You defeat Samael, only to discover that the entire game was a psychotic illusion of a dying man. Harry leans face first against his steering wheel, bleeding from the neck. This takes a huge inspiration from the movie Jacob's Ladder, in which a Vietnam Veteran was simply experiencing a psychotic episode of his last dying moments. The movie version of Silent Hill completely destroyed the brilliance in this, because it was obvious that they threw Sean Bean in just to make this point painfully obvious. But this is probably the best death scene in any game.

In fact, the Silent Hill series probably has all of the most resonant and well-thought-out deaths in any game. They really tend to grip you.

Spoiler:
Finding out that Lisa is really dead, and was forced by The Cult of Samael to take care of Alessa by being basically force-fed White Claudia was one of the few moments in any videogame where I actually felt bad for a character. She's simply Alessa's memory of her. She gets her revenge in a few of the endings, though, so you kind of find yourself rooting for her.

Spoiler:
When Cybil gets posessed and you have to kill her (Unless you went through the unnecessarily difficult task of procuring the Aglaophtis). She was one of the few 'lights in the darkness', and one of the reasons you kept going.

Spoiler:
The Flood ending in Silent Hill 2, where James is overwhelmed by the murder of his wife, and so kills himself. Though you could kind of see this coming, I still blame Angela for showing him the way out. Damn you, Angela. Damn you.

Spoiler:
Though Silent Hill 3 was sorely lacking in any good death revelations, Silent Hill 4 had one that was particularly memorable. Finding out that Walter Sullivan had really killed himself years earlier (though you would've known this if you were a Silent Hill 2 fanatic, as Walter was the subject of a few newspaper clippings in that game), and was murdering people through his ritualistic connections with his 'mother'. The story sounds fairly stupid on paper, sure, but it really turns out quite incredible in the context of the game. You might find it hard to feel bad for Walter at first, as he's trying to kill you, but once you discover all he's been through, you can't help but feel bad for him. He was abandoned as a baby, only to be adopted by the Red Sect of the Cult of Samael (Masquerading as an orphanage), and subject to psychological and physical abuse (such as being forced to swallow leeches). The cult taught him the 21 Sacraments for the Descent of the Holy Mother, and so he thought, delusionally, that by killing 21 people based on their connection with tarot cards, he could bring back his 'Mother'. I found myself rooting for the antagonist so much that I didn't even feel bad when I got the worst ending in the game the first play through, where both Henry and Eileen are sacrificed.

Well...I could go on and on about Silent Hill...so let's just leave it at that.

Slapped the spoiler block over for those who haven't played Odin Sphere (yeah, I like this game, if the gameplay itself doesn't get you it'll be the story, which is amazing, a must-have for those who have PS2/3)

Spoiler:
King Onyx from Odin Sphere. He thought he was invincible, he foolishly cast down the prophecies of his own death, only to be laid low and proven wrong. He becomes afraid, he wonders how he could possibly die, then he accepts his fate.

Spoiler:
Then his body cools down enough for him to start crumbling (For those who don't know, he's made of molten lava at this point.

Johnson in Halo 3, the guy couldn't get infected by the Flood and then gets owned by OOM-9 or whatever his name is.

And the end scene in Kameo:Elements of Power, the main character's evil sister kisses the antagonist and they turn into a statue, that falls off their floating ship and onto the ocean floor.

@Lunahound:

Spoiler:
That's the thing though, she was already dead. That's why she only appears in the alternate Silent Hill. Since she took care of Alessa after she was burned to rebirth Samael, Alessa has strong memories of her, and in a way, I guess she wants her to have her revenge. And 'Alternate' Silent Hill is Alessa's world. It's kind of the same thing with how Maria was able to die multiple times in Silent Hill 2, because she's just a creation of James' imagination, either to make him feel terrible for the murder of his wife Mary (If you don't recall, every time Maria died, it was by the hands of Pyramid Head, who is supposed to represent James), or to make him forget about it. But since James is insane, the creation of Maria has nothing to do with Alessa, as she's simply a product of his own warped mind. Oh, and I have to add: The movie was unforgivably bad.

James wasn't insane. I can't remeber what his wife died of, thinks it's cancer. But because of this, he wasn't able to make any WooHoo, so Maria was created to indulge his sexual desires. Pyramid Head was created to indulge in his desire to see himself punished for killing his wife, which is why when Maria dies last, James admits everything to the Pyramid Head(s) to make them disappear, which they do by killing themselves.

James killed his wife by smothering her with a pillow when she was terminally ill. I think it was because she was incredibly abusive and suicidal at the time.

James was very much insane. Proof:

Spoiler:
The 'Demons' that James are killing, are, for the most part, real people. The most concrete proof I can find of this is when you go back to the first enemy you kill, the construction site is blocked off with crime scene tape. There are certain places that are completely fabricated by James' mind, and so the Demons you find there couldn't possibly be real (The Prison), but this just reinforces his insanity further.

Spoiler:
The 'Demons' are all female, with the exception of Pyramid Head. This is a repeating theme throughout the Silent Hill series. The Demons are representative of the fears and strong emotions of whatever character is 'causing' the deformation of Silent Hill (Silent Hill 1, Alessa spent most of her life in Alchemilla, and so that's where the nurses and doctors come in. Silent Hill 3's monsters are kind of repetitions of Alessa's fears. The 'Aborted' from Silent Hill 4 are representative of Walter Sullivan's hatred for women, especially those who abandon their children). Since all of these weird creations are all a product of James' head (evidenced by his obsession with Mary), then that's pretty much a shoe-in for insanity. Also, notice scenes of Pyramid head either 'raping' the Mannequins, or murdering Maria (who is basically a facsimile of Mary). They represent James to the fullest, and having to kill themselves to die is probably just an attempt to push James in the 'right' direction. Since the original 'Pyramid Heads' were just Civil War-era Executioners that were members of the Red Sect of Samael (Evidenced by Jimmy Stone in SH4), I think James' mind made the connection by itself. (Also, I just noticed that you kind of contradicted yourself in the same post. First, you said James didn't kill his wife, and then you say that James wanted to punish himself for killing his wife. Kind of confusing)

Spoiler:
Maria is basically James' imaginary friend, manifested from all of his frustrations and desires. None of the other characters ever see Maria. When James mentions Maria to Laura, she doesn't know what he is talking about. Anyone with an imaginary friend, especially one which they are convinced is absolutely real, and take on the appearance of their dead ex-wife, is pretty friggin insane.

It's also probably a good thing to note that Silent Hill magnifies someone's fear, hatred, regret, etc., into a physical form (for them), probably due to the influence of Samael. But this doesn't really make James any more sane.

Now, on the subject of Mary:

Spoiler:
Mary actually died a week before the events of Silent Hill. And, as CorporateLogo has said, she was smothered with a pillow while she was staying in Brookhaven by James, for a number of reasons. She was constantly yelling and screaming at him, he spent basically all of his life once she got sick in the hospital, he didn't want to see her like that anymore, etc. This is clarified indefinetly by the scene in Lakeview Hotel, at the end of the game. James was just in denial to such a degree (insanity), that he blocked everything out of his mind, made himself believe that she died three years ago, and that her disease was the murderer, not himself

I know my Silent Hill.

I only know Silent Hill from wikipedia, and i said that James wasn't insane, but that he just suffered delusions a few eeks prior to silent hill. Sorry if I was wrong. It's too much too handle for me, so I stick to MGS

I know my Silent Hill.
